Not a bad place as Mexican restaurants go. Clean and comfy we were seated quickly and greeted by our waitress. A good selection and a full bar awaited us. My first visit I had Steak a LA tampiquena. The steak was tasteless and slightly tough. My next visit I had chimichangas. With the steak filling they were really good. They come with a white cheese sauce which is watered down. I asked for the green sauce instead. The wife had flautas. They were not so good. A big hunk of chicken with no seasoning warped in a tortilla and fried. The beans here are okay and the rice is bland. The food is not the greatest but the place is clean and the service is good.

Best Mexican restaurant in town! Homemade guacamole is fabulous along w/their RASPBERRY frozen margitas (which they often run out of cuz it's so popular). I love their shredded pork but it's all great! Huge menu!

My top pick for sit-down authentic Mexican food if you are in Portage. Great service, affordable prices, and large portions of amazing food. Don't be fooled by the outwardly shabby exterior, as another poster commented - the inside is rather cozy and casual. I send hotel guests over here whenever they ask for good Mexican and they all come back with glowing comments!

Very veggie friendly! Delicious veggie fajitas and spinach enchiladas. Highly recommend.

Visiting my mom in NW Indiana. Wow this place scores major points with me. I enjoyed my chalupa and tacos. I tried pork, steak, and chicken. I liked the steak most but don't think that is because the chicken or pork were sub-par. Not the case!!! They were delicious, well seasoned and well portioned. The chile habanero by El Yucateco in verde and in red brought by the heat without changing the gorgeous flavor!

The food was terrible, everything was bland hope they can find a Mexican cook or their business is going under.

Are here a couple days ago. They gave a new cook and they food wasn't that great. The salsa would have been better if it was from a jar. Won't be coming back.

I ordered the flautas and I loved them, they were very flavorful and delicious. The service was extremely slow though and my husband wasn't crazy about the food. He ordered the carne asada meal.

My first impression of this place is that it's okay. So that's what it gets: three stars (A-OK). I can't speak much to the dine-in experience because I got take out. The service was friendly and the food came out fast. The salsa was tomato-y but otherwise lacking in flavor. In general, the food was fine but bland. The horchata, on the other hand, was heavy on the spices, which was surprising but tasty. It was good enough to give another try but not the gem I was hoping for.

I sure wish I could add like 10 more stars for this place. From the outside and the entrance, it kinda looks like a dive on account of the menacing crackle of the neon, ugly as sin exterior paint, and cluttered vestibule. The dining area is actually quaint and inviting, with long and roomy wood benches and large tables. It boggles the mind how large the dining area is, as it winds around the kitchen in an L shape. The servers are very friendly and patient as you strive to make your way through a gigantic menu chocked full of affordably filling mexican food, all tasting amazingly authentic. A typical dinner will cost between $8 and $12, and I guarantee you will be stuffed and satisfied. The shrimp chimi is a large, fried weakness of mine. I think I counted 12 plump jumbo shrimp inside a perfectly golden crispy shell drowned in awesome queso blanco (white cheese) with a big portion of beans and rice. 12 shrimp in a dinner costing only $10.99? How do they afford to make these things? The hard shelled pork tacos are the best I've ever had. I ordered thinking I would get the usual tiny cubes of pork you find at other places. What I got was pork sliced directly off the roast in strips, a nice, thick golden shell, and a heaping mound of shredded white cheese on top. These tacos are heavy and delicious. The giant burrito suiso is exactly that - a giant. This thing is so big it's embarrassing. You won't find the cheap fillers other places overstuff their burritos with. This bad boy is mostly meat inside, and easily weighs in over a pound. It hangs off both ends of the plate and costs a mere $9.99. Even the chips and salsa are served with care. The same little dude characteristically brings them to your table the moment your butt lands on the booth. The chips are warm and fresh, and they serve the salsa in a large bottle and provide little bowls for individual use. A must if you're surrounded by double-dippers. If you're more of a carry-out person, they gotcha covered. They even pack everything properly to avoid spillage and breakage, unlike most everywhere else. I've recommended El Pueblo to several of my friends and coworkers and they have all been blown away. Give them a try.

Nice inside, clean, and friendly staff. Salsa was really good! Did not care for the ground beef - not seasoned, bland. Chicken tortilla soup came with broccoli and cauliflower !? Not the best Mexican food we've had (and we've had plenty).

Everything tasted like it came out of a can. Had the chilaquiles with steak and was very disappointed, it resembled something that would have come from a Swansons TV dinner than a mexican restaurant. Pueblo is a below average American-Mexican restaurant.

This place was great! It was cozy and clean inside, the staff is very friendly, the service was quick, the prices are reasonable, and the food was delicious--and very authentic. I had the shrimp chimichanga and my husband had the fish tacos. We highly recommend both. We will surely stop here again the next time we travel this way!

I am glad to see that some people have had a good experience with this place, unfortunately my husband and I were not so impressed. The food for the most part tasted OK, I would not say it was bad but certainly not impressive. I would say that the margarita I ordered certainly was bad. I did not taste or feel and alcohol whatsoever in it and I usually feel it with only one drink. In fact I didn't even halfway finish it because the taste was so bad. It tasted like they poured margarita mix straight out of the bottle, and a cheap mix at that. I was actually glad that the rotating mix of servers didn't manage to ask if we wanted queso or any kind of appetizer, because after sampling the food I am certain the queso is nothing more than melted Velveeta which is just wrong in my book. There seemed to be some confusion among the staff as to who was supposed to do what. One person seated us, others briefly appeared and throughout the entire meal nobody gave us their name or informed us that they were our server. Overall we were disappointed with the food, weren't offered an appetizer, or water to go with our drinks and I ended up drinking half of my husbands beer which sadly was the most impressive part of the meal. So if you must go here at least have the good sense to order a Dos Equis Amber so at least you will enjoy your beer. We won't give this place another try while we are here, once was enough for us.

El Pueblo has recently been remodeled and are open for business. This is a not miss Mexican restaurant! Authentic and homemade. Great service. The burritos are as big as your head! The stuffed poblanos/chille rellanos are the best I have had such a long time. They make a batch in the morning and when they sell out, they are done for that day. This has definitely made it onto my regular dining establishments!!!

Giving this place a five star for quick, friendly, accurate service. Great margaritas, and great salsa. As far as food goes though I ordered the quesadilla verde with steak. The steak had great flavor, but the ingredients were missing. It was literally just steak and cheese inside of a shell. The rice seemed cold, and dry. Minus this it was a good experience, and I will give them another try.

Very yummy! Nice atmosphere. Clean bathrooms :) Didn't feel that everything "came out of a can" as another has said. The horchata was delicious! Chips and salsa was really good, too. I got the cheese chicken -- really great flavor! Hubby got the streak burrito -- big enough to have leftovers definitely. Con: lettuce isn't good (I'd ask for a dish without it in the future)

This is my favorite Mexican restaurant of all time! Unfortunately, they have been closed for some time due to a storm, I believe. Has anyone heard if they are planning on reopening?

This is where I go for Mexican food when in Portage. This place is a wonderful authentic Mexican restaurant. The staff has always been kind, courteous, and fast. I haven't tried everything on the menu, but I have tried several different items. They all taste homemade to me except for "maybe" the tortillas. The El Pelon special is delicious, it comes served in a molcajete (stone mortar) with steak, chicken, and shrimp. Two can share this dish. (my favorite) The Jalisco Special is similar only served on a plate over rice with their special cheese sauce. They also have all your traditional Mexican menu items. The portions are great, the prices are extremely reasonable, the food is good, and the service is ALWAYS with a smile. Try it out, I know you'll enjoy it.

Just went there for carry out due to all the good reviews. They aren't wrong. Friendly service...nice clean looking dining room. Very nice at the cash register and pretty darn quick without it being suspicious. Got home and the food was exactly what we had hoped. Tasty and filling. Fish tacos were very good, as were the steak tacos. I had ordered beef enchiladas in case I didn't care for the fish and ate half of one just to see what it would taste like fresh...wow, very delicious! We'll be back often!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
