I heard great reviews about this place, so I guess my expectations were a bit high. My husband and I went during the summer and sat outside. I like the location, being in downtown and all. But when it came down to the food, I was not impressed. We both ordered steak and was surprised that when the food came out, it was kind of tiny. The taste was very plain, as if they didn't try at all. I got shrimp along with my steak and it was only barely 3 pieces. Overall, the staff was very friendly.

The steak at this place is kind of split-personality. One time it was awesome, the next time kind of bland and meh. Everything else I tried here was fine, and service was great.

This restaurant has been my favorite in the South Bend area for over 30 years. Every time I return home to Indiana, I make it a point to go back to Doc's. The service is great, and the food is amazing! The salad course is awesome (super yummy house-made croutons), bread fresh-baked and warm, and the "Doc's Saloon" steak is out of this world. This is the ONLY steak I order when eating out (b/c nothing out ever really matches what my Dad could grill). The french onion soup is bubbly and delicious, and the strawberry milkshakes with real strawberries are amazing (though I rarely have room for one). Can't wait for my next trip!

The food and environment were very good, but most impressive, but the star of the show was Shelly, the recently hired server who was in training, but did all the heavy lifting and took great care of us. The food is above average, the environment fun and we will be back again.

I haven't eaten here in a while, but it used to be a regular stop for me. The atmosphere is dark, but I like that. The food is not the highest quality, but it is good for the price, and service seemed decent. I just remember 10 years ago I had the best steak and shrimp ever there, but I can't say if it is the same today or not.

Good food and a very good staff. Quick too. A great place for lunch when you are down town.

Just awesome. My boyfriend and I are from out of town and stopped here to have some lunch and kill some time. He had the ribeye and I had the top sirloin. Both were cooked to perfection and very tasty. They have very good drink specials throughout the week (it's not just beer!) Our server was very good and knowledgable about the dishes. I wish we lived closer or we would visit here often. So glad we stopped here!

Doc Pierce's is just a short walk away so we decided to order carry out. The service was prompt and courteous. The food however, was not what I was hoping! This is unfortunate since I was really hoping to LOVE our experience. Doc Pierce's has been a staple in the Mishawaka area for a long time. I ordered the Chicken Pita. My husband got some sort of combo platter with chicken, steak, and fries. I got my daughters some shrimp, baked potato, and green beans. The chicken pita was dry and the bread was oily. It actually didn't come on a pita... it came on a croissant. My husband loved the steak but the chicken was over cooked and tough. The baked potato was decent once butter and sour cream were added to the mix, but the skin was tough-- like it had been sitting for a while. This could all be due to the fact that it was a to-go order so I'm definitely not writing the place off yet. Their menu seems to have plenty of other choices I look forward to trying. Plus, the patio looks SO fun. Can't wait to return and give an updated review of my experience.

My girlfriend and I met here for lunch. I grabbed an outdoor table on a beautiful afternoon. She had the bacon cheeseburger, I had the teriyaki charbroiled chicken salad. Hers was lovely, my salad left a little to be desired. Essentially, it was a chicken breast sliced over iceberg lettuce with a few veggies. More or less, the salad was an afterthought. Service was good, but I need to come back and try something different.

Ducked in for a snack the other day after hearing about it for ages. Place is vintage in the way of 'hasnt been updated in decades'; it is not without its charm though. The tiny booths are worth sitting in just for the novelty (one sided booths? I kind of love it). On tap beer list was surprisingly tiny and bland, but then again the place has more a family feel than burger and beer joint feel. Some fun cocktails on the menu though. We stayed for some appetizers that were hot and fresh and tasty. If I worked in downtown Mishawaka, I'd probably be there often but if you're in the general SB area there are lots of other options.

If you want to go to a museum, go to Doc Pierce's. If you want a flavorful meal, go elsewhere. This is hardly worth a full review, so I'll be brief. Boring, old bar menu. Flavorless ... FLAVORLESS food. Absolutely no seasoning. Slow and inattentive wait staff. Don't waste your money.

Old and dated. Food is very subpar. They don't really excel at anything. This would be place for older folks in the 50+ range. Not a young place by any means. I won't eat here again unless I have to.

Onion rings and grasshoppers are awesome! I love the chicken Morney. This place looks like It's right out of Cheers. Outdated, but still a local staple.

My family and I went here together on multiple occasions, it was amazing! Reading some of the other reviews we simply disagree...the food is cooked extremely well. Especially the seafood which my mom and I prefer, the fish is never overdone. Service is fantastic and even remembered us when we came back a few weeks later. The environment is really neat as well, a Mishawaka classic.

Wife and I ate here this evening. Nothing stood out, hence the reason for the 2 stars. The ambiance was heightened because we ate outside on a gorgeous night. The food was overpriced for what you got. I ordered the shrimp special. The sauce overpowers the shrimp, which was disappointing because the shrimp was cooked well. My wife ordered the chicken/steak combo. She ordered her steak medium and it came medium well, not a deal breaker if the steak was delicious. It was underwhelming and not seasoned at all. Service was decent, as she was efficient and friendly, however not exceptional. We probably won't go back.

this place has gone way down hill, only thing to be desired here is different owners that might completely revamp everything. owners son brags about how its all gonna be his someday, whats there to brag about. that only means it'll just get worse. don't bother with this dump

Historic, charming restaurant in downtown Mishawaka serving American standards with a focus on steaks and some fish dishes. The closest I can come to comparing this place is to a more local-flavored and rustic version of O'Charley's. The service for our large (30+ people) was good -- better than I was expecting considering our size. The standouts: side salads were fresh, huge, and had delicious homemade croutons. The shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were massive and fresh! The steaks were all the right temps for those of us who ordered them. I believe they are USDA grade or something like that -- good but not great cuts. My 6 oz steak was around 10 bucks -- a decent price IMO. Sides of mushrooms, baked potatoes, and onion rings were popular among our large party and got good marks. Last, the steak salad was excellent! I wish Doc's had salads made of romaine and/or spinach on the menu, but they don't. I don't think the food quality here is AMAZING, but the food is certainly fresh, well-cooked, and definitely solid comfort food. Just what our party needed.

Good food and pleasant service. Locally owned. The atmosphere is kind of dark and the building is kind of old. But the food, menu and service are pretty good. The Steak & Shrimp was very tasty. The ambiance is pleasant and relaxed. It's a nice place to go for full service dining without a big price tag. The upper loft floor is great for private parties and big groups.

I've enjoyed eating here for years. Love the bartender's steak and they have the biggest, juiciest fried shrimp in the area. I love the bread that comes with the meal. Just don't eat too much of it. It's hard to stop and still leave enough room for the main course. Park behind the building and use the back door.

FACADE: The restaurant is an old, original building in downtown Mishawaka. There is a nice, relatively new (within the last 2 or 3 years) outdoor seating with lights for summertime dining. The yellow Doc Lights blink, and there's something corny but cool about it. INSIDE: You first walk in a short hallway, and the decor is dark maroon and dark wood. There are several antique tiffany lamps above the tables available for purchase. There are booths, tables, bar, and upsatirs seating. There are a couple of rooms for seating too. There's some charm in there. I like it. BAR: They don't have jagermeister and red bull. Their most famous drink is the long island ice tea. They make world class long islands there. On Saturdays, they have long islands for $5.00. They have daily drink specials. TECHNOLOGY: They have free wifi, but it's kind of slow. They have a HDTV in the bar too. FOOD: They usually have a fish special on Saturdays. Their hamburgers are pretty good. One dish is called the intern, and it is a hamburger patty covered in melted cheese and chives. It's good: tried and true. Their onion rings for an appetizer are extremely good. So is their french onion soup, but if you don't like bread in your FOS or a lot of cheese, I suggest not ordering the FOS. Their best dish is oddly the chicken strips. What chicken strips/tenders are good? Seriously? OH YES!! YES YES! Their chicken is juicy, fresh, and the breading is to die for. It's great wtih Honey Mustard, BBQ, Buffalo, or just plain! Usually the dishes come with a choice of a side or a salad. SERVICE: The servers don't bother you and are usually pretty good. I grew up on the Elkhart/St. Joe county line, and I loved to come here if I got a good report card. I recommend it!

I'm all about places with character and this fits the bill. I love the darkness and all the stained glass inside. The breaded whitefish is my favorite and it comes with a side as well for $7.49. I love their specialty drinks as well. They are so creative and taste so good!

Good, Not Great Plenty is said about the atmosphere of the restaurant, which is a little overrated. Yes, it is dark and rustic, but in more of a generic and put-on fashion than anything uniquely inviting. The food is above average; I generally prefer the orange roughy (excellent every time), and the house salads are also very tasty. Occasionally I will order steak but am more often than not discouraged by the chefs' seeming inability to distinguish between well done and medium-well, with an affinity toward the former that appears tough to shake. All in all, a decent place to dine with an above average menu and about average service. A WORD OF CAUTION: Beware ordering take-out from Doc's. We do so regularly and our orders are botched 90% of the time, no exaggeration. From missing sides to salad mishaps, we have seen the gamut of failure resulting from apathy in this area. Be advised that you are certainly pressing your luck if you choose to go this route.

First time at Doc's. The atmosphere is unique and inviting; it feels as though you've walked into a Bavarian ale house. It's nice to walk into a restaurant and feel as though you can be yourself. Very laid back at Doc's. While the atmosphere was good and the service was great, the food is where this review begins to loose a couple of stars. Doc's prides themselves in being a steak house; unfortunately while my steak was cooked perfectly, it lacked in flavor. By lacked, I suppose I mean to say it was as though it was entirely void of any seasoning. One entire star had to be dropped simply because the "fresh" fruit had a mold spot on it. I'm sure this isn't the norm, but that's something that can't be overlooked. The prices were fair for the portions and the house salad so many of my friends have raved about, lived up to the hype. Overall, I'd go back, but I wouldn't rush.

The onion rings will keep you coming back here. Great place for lunch or dinner. Interior is a bit dark, but the service is wonderful, and the prices are extremely reasonable. The lampshades and woodwork alone make this place a must-visit, and the food makes it worthwhile to stay.

OK, the wife and I went back on the day of the great blizzard of 2011. As it was my birthday and they were the only steak house within a reasonable distance to our house when some streets were impassible, they received a second chance. I will forever go back for the French Onion Soup. I give up on the steak, apparently I am the only one who thinks I shouldn't have to ask for my steak to be seasoned, I am ok with that if I have to ask for a dash of salt and pepper to hit my steak before it hits the grill, then thats ok. Because this French Onion Soup is to die for, I have never had a Onion soup that I like, but I am now a fan.

I've seen everything from jeans to formal gowns here, and that's the cool thing about this place, it all fits. The inside is dark and filled with stained glass, it gives off a speakeasy vibe that's both comfortable and elegant. The food is pretty standard american, but delicious. Don't overlook the house salad. I frequently just get a double order with their house dressing and amazing homemade croutons. Tends to be a popular place, so if you're going on a weekend for dinner, calling ahead might be helpful.

So this past weekend was another "No Broads Weekend" my best friend/co-conspirator are prone to having. Plus, he wanted to belatedly celebrate my birthday with me, so he took me out to dinner once I got there. The South Bend/Mishawaka area is overrun with chain restaurants and sorely lacking in much local flavor. So when he recommended we do something a bit special and head to this Mishawaka institution, I was all for it. It lived up to expectations. Nothing either of us ate was even remotely healthy... that doesn't really seem like this place's style. But if you've got an unhealthy but delicious meal allotment lined up, you'd be pleased. We started with their onion rings, which were great not only for their thick batter, but for the fact the onion part actually tasted like an onion, rather than a greasy blob. That's not to say it wasn't greasy, it was... just in a good way. I want an onion ring to taste like an onion, not the inside of a fryer. I then kept the fried food game rolling with some chicken strips. They were among the best I'd ever had (and I should know). Big, juicy, thick chunks of chicken in an incredibly flavorful breading. With a little honey mustard they were just excellent. The service was good, but inconsistent. Our waitress started out a little bit inattentive, but then as things got busier, she somewhat paradoxically got more and more on top of things. But still, she was friendly enough and kept the whole meal being an overall enjoyable experience. I definitely tend to knock South Bend for its over-reliance on chains and such, so I have to give a nice independent place like this a lot of credit.

One of my favorite places to eat steak or fish and enjoy great mixed drinks. I've been going here for years and take out of town friends to this place when they visit SB. I love the atmosphere.

Steak was great. Salmon, not so much - too fishy, like it's been laying in the fridge for a week. Overall a pretty good place for the price

This place is extremely affordable and the food is pretty decent. My husband and I went in the early evening just before the crowds started packing in. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich (which comes with a side), and it cost about $7.50. My husband ordered the chicken sandwich and it cost the same. I noticed they also had a 6 oz. sirloin that came with a side dish for under $10.00, just to give you an idea of their prices. Before dining here, check their website for a coupon. Sometimes they have discount coupons.

I love Doc's! Very affordable for the quality of the steaks. Rob mentioned below that the steaks aren't overly seasoned, and he's right about that. They use good cuts and the texture and flavor are good, but they definitely are not heavily seasoned. I have seen them run specials on blackened steaks and other similar, so you could probably make that type of request. A "full prescription" meal comes with two sides and bread.. I think they make their own butter and at least some of their dressings. I KNOW they make the croutons..and even though I'm not a crouton kinda guy, the croutons at Docs are part of what I look forward to. For appetizers I like the onion rings and potato skins. My favorite entrees are the brass rail (cut up steak with chunks of onion, grn pepper and tomatoes and some kind of sauce, would be a good choice for someone looking for lots of flavor), the steak and shrimp (3 jumbo shrimp battered and deep friend), and the haddock (also battered and deep fried, I eat healthy the next day). Long Island's are on special saturday night and are amazing (even if it's not a saturday night). The "ward special" (rum drink) and ice cream drinks are also good. They have their menu and specials online. You can get a steak, 2 side and a soft drink for $12 any day of the week. Most expensive plate is the filet @ $22.
