Went for pizza - no one greeted us at the door or to explain that we don't wait to be seated, which wasn't at all obvious. When we walked up to the counter the women there looked at us like "what do you want?" We asked where we order, how it all works. She explained the process. We ordered and went to the bar for waters, salad bar looked like it had been there for some time as I browsed it on the way back to our table. The people working there stood about the room looking like angry bouncers so that creeped us out, as well as the old timey building smell that ended up permeating our food with an odd flavor. The place had a dirty feel to it and the pizza was not good. We won't be coming back here again.

They charge 50 cents plus tax for a take out box! My husband ordered and paid $49 for our pizza and sat down to wait. He forgot to tell them it was for carry out so he sent our son back up to tell them that it was for carry out and they said it was going to be $1.07 more. They wouldn't give them our pizza until he paid $1.07 more. If they sat back down and ate one piece they said they could have a styrofoam dinner box. Don't order carry out unless you take your own box!

Horrible food! Dirty cups, beer was flat, dirty bathrooms!!! South Bend location is our regular joint and we were on this side of town and decided to get our favorite pizza. Quality is horrible, all frozen, and nothing like he South Bend location. Even the nacho cheese is different! Will never come to this one again! I'll stick to downtown SB

Fairly good pizza and sandwiches, and I enjoy the dark, old style pizza atmosphere.

Just thought you should see my review of the South Bend location. Keep up the great pizza Mishawaka! Live on Barnaby's! "How disappointing! I am a long time Barnaby's customer in Illinois. I travel to South Bend a few times a year and was thrilled to find two Barnaby's locations. Last time I was here I tried the Grape rd. Location in Mishawaka. Yummmm yummm yummm! The crust was thin and crispy and the sauce and toppings were perfect. I read the reviews online and saw the high praise for this location and thought I needed to try it on this trip... What a disappointment! YUCK! The mushrooms were chopped into little pieces of nothingness. I could barely identify them. I asked for fresh garlic and got WHOLE CLOVES throughout the pizza! The biggest offense was the thick, doughy crust. What a shame! You forgot how to make Barnaby's pizza... Visit Mishawaka or Northbrook, IL for the right way to make a proper Barnaby's pizza.... Well, I decided to head over to the Mishawaka location and get a delicious Barnaby's pizza for the ride back to Chicago. The dogs will be eating SB Barnaby's pizza tonight. "

We stopped in here last night with basically no information about what it was like. We were pleasantly surprised. It reminded me of a German pub just minus the bad German food. We ordered two pizzas and fried pickles and fried cauliflower. All were very good. Not the best pizza I have ever had but still very very good. It reminded us somewhat of Pizza King pizza.

I'm afraid this place had dropped to one star. We've loved their pizza for years but last evening had, what will be, our last visit to therm. Mother's birthday and she loves pizza. Ordered a large and paid $24 for it but knw it would be great! It had no sauce. Lots of cheese and, not too bad on the meat but tasteless as sand and dry as a popcorn fart. I squeezed a piece and no sauce oozed from between cheese layer land crust. My husband peeled back the cheese layer and the crust had no sauce nor even color of sauce. MIL called Barnabys and spoke to night manager who said they had used fresh shells and that the sauce had soaked into it. She told him again, very nicely, that the pizza had NO sauce and she just wanted him to know that his pizza makers were not quite doing their job and that the pizza had no taste. He insisted that the crust was to blame. If they knew the crust was soaking the sauce they should have been adding extra to compensate. My MIL wasn't after a refund or free pizza but he should have offered to make it right. He did nothing but deny that it was a dry, tasteless pizza. We decided we'd rather have Pizza Hut. Shame, they used to be such a treat for us. .

On the counter there was a big sign that says system down no beer. So I go to the drink station and ask can I at least get a bottle of beer? No. How about a glass of wine? No. What kind of system won't allow you to get a glass of wine? You can see the bottles of wine sitting back there. So the guy says some body forgot to renew the liquor license. Well no beer with pizza reduces enjoyment by half. Then we get the pizza it's tasteless. No seasoning. must have forgot the salt. But the worst thing is that it was undercooked. The dough was still raw. Location on Jefferson is terrific. Was really surprised at the quality difference. Left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.

Really awesome pizza. The cornmeal crust is crisp and medium thick. I love the Italian sausage. All the ingredients are tasty. I like getting the classic sausage mushroom onion and green pepper. The pizza style is Midwest? Not Chicago not east coast not Californian and not really that Italian. But it's really tasty! I would give four or five stars if the place weren't so dated. They seriously need update this place. The flooring is the original and is gross. So are the tables and pretty much everything else. I know they just redid their other location but I'm not driving that far Also while the staff is very loyal to the business, they could be more polite and smile at their guests.

Best in town. Pizza comes in many varieties, with a corresponding variety of palates to critique it. For my money, Barnaby's has the best pie in town, hands down. I've seen it compared here to Chicago-style pizza, with which I am unfamiliar, but I can attest to the flavor. I think what sets their pizza apart is the crust. It is relatively thin but has a very distinct character. The sauce is excellent, as are the cheese and toppings. Very friendly staff and great atmosphere, particularly if you're a fan of sports. Barnaby's is a local favorite for reasons not without merit. Highly recommended.

This place has great pizza that is different tasting from my own delicious homemade pizza, or anyplace else I've eaten. I love it. I see people ordering the sandwiches, and I always say, "They must be good, too. Look at how many people are ordering them." But when it comes down to it, we order a big pizza, which feeds four happy people. Not cheap, but fabulous pizza and sodas for four for under $30 is not bad. I am not crazy about places with TV, but I will happily trot over to Barnaby's for lunch whenever I am in town. I can overlook the TV and concentrate on the superb pizza.

Barnaby's was not my favorite pizza experience in the Michiana area.... There wasn't anything I hated about it but I think I would probably take my business elsewhere in the future. As we walked in, the lighting was dim and the decor was a little dingy. BUT I'm no snob :) I can appreciate a divey place for sure. After taking in the atmosphere for what it was worth, the first thing I noticed was a salad bar-- this pumped me up. My favorite pizza place back home has an EXCELLENT salad bar that I crave and so I was excited to test Barnaby's salad bar out. Unfortunately, it was a little lackluster. When we got to the counter to order though, I still decided to give it a shot to get some greens in before my pizza fix ;) I do like the way the ordering is set up. You walk to the counter and fill out a series of check boxes to express exactly how you want your pizza, what you want to do about appetizers, and any other specifics the kitchen might need to know. We got a couple pizzas, some mozzarella sticks, and the salad. Total came to around 40+ bucks. When I asked about drinks, I was directed to another counter to purchase those separately. Drinks were cheap... but choices were slim. Food was meh. I was hoping for a fresher more homemade approach to our dinner... but the motzerella sticks seemed frozen and the pizza was a little cardbordey and dry. Maybe the pizza is hit or miss? I hear some people rave about their sandwiches and garlic bread... we might go back sometime to try those, but we will continue our search for Michiana's best pizza elsewhere.

At 9:15 p.m. I called this location and asked what time they closed. I was told 11:00, and with it being Saturday it sounded right to me. I called because my family and I planned to do some shopping at Target, and eat dinner at Barnabys and what time Barnabys closed made a difference of where we went first. Since they closed at 11, we went to Target first. We arrived at 10:25 and the guy at the counter where you order says, "You know we close in 5 minutes, right?" I told him the female that I spoke with me told me 11 (I also showed him where I called at 9:15 in the log of my phone) and he said she was wrong. Ok, soooo I understand this was her mistake, but her mistake ruined my plans, because the only reason I eat inside there is their reasonably priced salad bar. So since I still had to feed my kids, I ordered a couple things to go, unhappily, because I wanted to dine in. After I pay, I notice on my receipt he charged me 40 cents per each to go item I ordered for the to go boxes!!! Are you kidding me?!?!? First of all, 40 cents a box is frigging ridiculous for anyone, but considering the incident where his employee made the mistake of telling me the wrong closing time, and me ordering food to go only because of his employees mistake when I wanted to eat there, and then charge me?!?!? I have went to this establishment off and on since I was a child, for 30 years, and I will NEVER go back over 80 cents because that is how the manager chooses to treat people. It's not about the money, it's the point. Come to find out this guy was the manager! Way to take care of your customers!!! Lost a lifelong customer over 80 cents. Ridiculous! Not a way to run a business.

Pizza = very good Staff = rude a-holes Especially the AA girl with the piercings and crap in her face. Every time you call there to order you get nothing but bad attitudes. Especially the AA girl. Then you walk in to get your pizza and she is leaning on the counter with her hand on her chin looking like she just lost a winning lottery ticket. Gets your pizza, tosses it up on the counter saying nothing. The blonde working was fine. The other girl needs to quit or be fired, period.

I came here with my girlfriend and her family. We were craving some pizza. When you get here you fill out order cards and submit them. Then your number is called and you pickup your food. It's a little funky but not a problem. The food was pretty good. My girl and I had pepperoni and cheese pizza, a simple pie. Her parents had sausage, peppers, and I think mushroom... I forget to be honest but it was their favorite mix. We enjoyed our food. For me, it wasn't amazing but it was far from bad. I ate quite a bit and the cheesy bread is the cheesiest thing I've eaten in ages. I wonder if I should have have asked for more bread with my cheese. :p We had your Pepsi Product sodas and watched the Bears play against Cincinnati and it was a nice overall meal. The place was far from packed on a sunday early afternoon but the few people who were there all seemed to be enjoying themselves as we were. The only downside I could see was that for us four, the table was a bit small. We used the next one over to hold our pizzas so we had room for our own plates and what not. I'd go back for sure.

Atmosphere is dark and almost medieval. All booth seating- so don't be a fattie. We were a little confused about the ordering and seating situation, but the girls working the counter/register were nice about it. You find a seat and fill out order cards and then take them up to the counter to pay. Pizza is all on one and sandwiches and appetizers are on another. Drinks all must be purchased at the bar. We went with a simple pizza with sausage and pepperoni. Our wait was less than 20 minutes and the pizza was delicious. I am now searching for recipes using cornmeal to make my own crusts at home. We definitely will be back!

The Pizza is ok. I do not see what all the hype is about. I usually order a bowl of chili (nice portion) and some bread sticks. The ''no refills on pop'' gag is straight out of the 1940's. Pizza takes quite some time to be made considering it's not thick by any stretch of the imagination but it is on the pricey side. Sauce is usually lacking, which is why i don't even bother sharing with my wife anymore, but on the rare occaision they do remember that sauce is supposed to go under the cheese... i might have a slice or two. Lastly, and before i say what I'm going to say, I want to say bless the owners hearts for giving the bus boys an opportunity at employment because most of the ones i've seen are mentally off to a point... but the bus boys can make your experience very uncomfortable. I've seen them get in loud arguments with each other over money on the table, frequently talking to themselves loudly which draws customers' attention, and constantly offering to take dishes out of the way you're clearly not done with. I was out with a couple of my buddies one night, and one of the bus boys for reasons completely unknown, looked at my friend across the room and slowly put his thumb across his neck. My friend asked what his problem was and he said he didn't know what he was talking about. Very strange, and very uncomfortable. Considering that and the food is just ok... 1 star is a gift. Does not live up to the hype.

I've been going to barnabys for years, I love their pizza. Their pizza has a little bit of a unique taste because they use a cracker crust unlike other pizza places that use traditional dough. Their food also doesn't have that commercialized, mass produced taste like Pizza Hut or fazoili's. Barnabys is also very warm and cozy, and is a nice place for families, and large groups.

We picked up a veggie pizza tonight and it was probably the worst pizza I have ever had. My husband and my friend both agreed. If your specialty is pizza, please do something else. seriously.

Not bad pizza, I'm a Chicago guy and it reminded a lot of Genoe's pizza in the south side, good sauce but the price was a bit steep

This place has been a family favorite for as long as I can remember. They have a unique crust that you won't find anywhere else, and it is delicious! Very good sauce. Great breadsticks! Fair drink prices. TV's for the game. You can watch them make your pie if you want! I highly recommend! This location has who I think is the owner's wife working sometimes....she seems like a crazy drunk....loud and obnoxious. But easily ignorable... Order pie with extra cheese!!!

I was less than impressed. The service model is just plain odd, but that can be overlooked if I basically consider it a fast-food establishment instead of a restaurant. Unfortunately for them, that still permits me to judge them on the basis of food and decor and they don't come out of either looking well. The decor is the unholy bastard child of dive bar, Chicago Uno's chain location, and High Medieval English tavern, with all the interior lighting one would expect from the last of those three. Seriously, people, electricity, it lets us light buildings brightly enough to actually see further than a foot and a half without filling them with smoke. Someone tell the owners. Anyway, I'm as happy with a hole-in-the-wall as the next foodie, so long as the food is good, and this place was reviewed well enough for me to be willing to give it a shot anyway. Unfortunately, the food was not sufficient to redeem the decor. Hell, it wasn't sufficiently good to stand on its own even without the building! My friend and I got a pie topped with sausage and green peppers; it arrived quickly enough (well, they made me go get it quickly enough but you know what I mean...), but it was just not particularly good pizza. I'm honestly torn over whether I would choose it over Papa John's in the future, that's how little I respect it. The crust was... hollowed-out, almost, on the bottom and baked until it was like gnawing on a brick. This continued about two-thirds of the way to the middle of the pie, where suddenly there was a mass of cornmeal to lend even more crunch; I understand that quite a few places do put it on the bottoms of their crusts, but this was like a solid ounce of the stuff every few square inches! The sauce was average-to-good, could have been worse but was by no means amazing. Cheese was likewise not bad but definitely not the best you can get. The ONLY highlight was that the sausage was actually quite good. Now if they would let me buy just that, and then go find another pizza place to get the rest of the, ya know, actual pizza, then we'd be getting somewhere. Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy a pizza, remove the sausage, and put it on top of another pizza from a different pizza place.

This place is great for people who likes greasy, cheap pizza! I know it's often packed, so you can tell something about the culinary criteria of our community, LOL. Sorry but, I'll pass on them, too many better options in the area.

I really, really, really, really loved this pizza! At first we were driving around trying to find Giannetto's, but found out they recently closed; so, we went here instead. My husband and I ordered a small pizza, which was more like a medium and could easily feed three people, and a side of breaded mushrooms. The bill only came to $15! It was so affordable! Anyway, I've never been in here and was a bit confused at first. You seat yourself. Just walk in, take a booth, and you fill out your order at the table (there is a pencil and paper behind the salt and pepper shakers). Then take your order to one of the registers. That's it. Yes, it's dimly-lit, but that was the warm, cozy charm of it. :-) We'll be back!

  • Tom S.

You have to keep an open mind when going here. The pizza is good but it's different. Being new to the area I am amazed at how different pizza is made here. Thin crust is the norm and pizzas are not cut like pies. A four square pattern that seems odd to me. The crust tastes like a cheez It cracker which is actually pretty good. I like the dark vintage pub feel of the place. I also want to add that I wish the employees were a bit more informative. Maybe they are used to regulars but as a new patron no one really explains how the process works. You order your pizza and then are called. You need to walk over to the bar area to order drinks. Napkins, plates and so forth are up by the counter and need to gather these items for yourself. I found the employee working at the bar was the most friendly and helpful not the employees running the cashier counter where orders are placed.

I love Mike Lane and the Mishawaka Barnaby's. I have never had a bad pie here. Every time I go back to South Bend I head over to Grape Road and see the Barnabys gang. the key to the perfect pie is extra sauce and a few minutes extra on cooking. You will never walk away unhappy. Whenever I asked Mike for help on a chairty or fundraiser he would hook me up like no other place in the area. Good people who always help out a good cause. Tell Mike tim bennett sent you.

Okay, first the decor: Very Old School and I LOVE it. Reminds me of being a kid. Guessing they were not aiming at old school, but it likely really hasn't been changed in 40 years. Dark wood, old lighting, gold colors. Food: LOVE the pizza, LOVE the Italian Beef (full of flavor, not rubbery,) and their fries are yummy too. (We have never ventured off those items, friends have and they have always liked what they got.) My kids love the free pickle bar too. Speaking of bars, the salad bar is a bit quirky, you get a heaping plate of iceberg lettuce from the counter (you can request spinach if you prefer.) Then the salad bar has the toppings. A little weird, but it works, maybe it keeps less of a mess, and keeps the salad crispier, maybe it keeps people from "helping themselves" when they didn't order the salad bar....I don't know, but thought I would point that out. You order food at one window, drinks at another, and they call your number when food is ready. They have a few people walking around picking up trash, extra plates, etc. Basically self serve though, probably one reason the price is so reasonable. When we drive home from my in-laws cottage in Michigan, back to Valparaiso, we often venture off the toll road, just to come here.

45 minutes (dine in) and $25 later I fail to see why anyone thinks this place is any better than a homemade Chef Boyardee pizza. I hear the one on Jefferson is the place to go, but this experience killed any chance I'll ever check it out. I do appreciate the term "Beef Bar" though. Perhaps the old adage is true... "Mo' Beef, Mo' Problems". In any case, beef related humor is the only thing keeping me from stabbing my own thigh with a fork when I think about my experience there... It was awful.

Annually in August, the Notre Dame Marching Band comes to Barnaby's for hearty rounds of pizza, beer, song, and dance. That alone should keep you coming. Barnaby's is a rustic trip to what you always hoped an English pub would be like. Be prepared to walk into clouds of smoke and deep, hearty laughter when you enter. The deep wood booths, stained-glass windows, and candlelit tables all deliver a cozy feel that will keep you here for hours. That, and the pizza has beer in the sauce, people. BEER! How you can you pass this up??

    (4)
  • Rob W.

I liked the place, old school feel on the inside. The pizza was decent, not my favorite of all time, that place is still down in Indy, but decent amount of toppings, decent cheese, decent sauce. We will be back in the future.

    (3)
  • Justin H.

This was one of the first Barnaby's I had the pleasure of going to. I always loved watching the pizza being made. If you have kids take them here just to see the pizza being made. One of the best memories of my childhood. Also the root beer is delicious.

Cheap and unhealthy ingredients, bad management. I know the restaurant has an old tradition in the area, but I don't buy it! I really think the place needs a huge change if they want to do things right. I got sick twice already by eating there, so I'll never go back. Sorry but I don't care about how much tradition they might have on the history of this town, I care about GOOD FOOD, and they DON"T have it!

We were on long road trip and used my mobile phone to locate Barnaby's near Notre Dame. Mid-afternoon on a weekday, the place was empty, but the pizza was good. There is lots of beer on tap - not much else, other than fried mozzarella sticks. Place hasn't been updated since it was opened (40 or 50 yrs ago?), but people are friendly and I'm sure it's popular with the college crowd. Much better than a fast food stop.

What treat! gotta love a pizza joint that knows how to mix it up! We ordered the barbecue chicken pizza, pizza with the works and the cheese pizza. Great taste! Great value and a fun place to hang out with the gang! This place has been around a long time and just keeps getting better and better while maintaining the fun and friendly atmosphere that makes hanging out at Barnabys so much fun!

    (4)
  • Zae S.

Barnaby's has a fun atmosphere, like stepping back into Old England. When you first walk in it may take a while to figure out that there are no waitresses. Just fill out your order card and take it to the counter. Drinks are served at a separate counter. The pizza is mediocre. Not quite thin crust, but the crust is much drier than I prefer and has very little flavor. The toppings are fine, though not plentiful. The beer tastes a tad watered down. Lots of families come here, but I find the benches very hard and uncomfortable, so I wouldn't ever sit long enough to watch a football game. If friends are going, I'll tag along, but wouldn't go of my own choice.

    (3)
  • Collin M.

This location is not owned by the same as the one on Jefferson (I'm told) but I wasn't impressed with the pizza here at all. It was edible, but with other options always available I wouldn't come back to this Barnaby's.

  • Nammyung L.

Disgusting, greasy pizza with sauce that tastes like left over bacon grease and not even enough cheese to cover the pizza. Avoid at all cost.

    (1)
  • Justin L.

1st of all, nice atmosphere. I second all of the other posts that say the ordering process is not stated very well at the door. With that said, because I had read the reviews I knew what to expect. $5.75 for a pitcher of beer? Unheard of in my town! Had the full order of garlic cheese bread and an individual 4 meat pizza. Enough for 4 meals for 1 person but only $23 with beer! The crust is strange but really delightful taste. Worth the trip if you are traveling through.

  • K L.

Been going here for over ten years. The price keeps going up and the quality going down. People working the register are rude and very unhelpful. Beverage price is ridiculous. The plates and silverware do not seem very clean. I have recently begun making the drive to the one on Jefferson. Omg what a difference. Way better pizza and the prices are much lower. Make the drive and get a great pizza

HOLY CRAP this place is GOOD! I'm not originally from the area. I love pizza so I asked some co-workers where I should go. A few of them recommended this place. They have got the best thin-crust pizza I've ever had. Their sausage and sauce = phenomenal. Wow... so good!

If a Mishawaka native can move to the heart of awesome pizza land (Chicago) and still proudly proclaim that Barnaby's pizza is the best pizza on earth, then Barnaby;s must be doing something right. When we were first dating, over one of many pizza based dates, my now-husband told me barnaby's "back home" was the best pizza around and I had to wait almost 6 months to try it for myself. I've enjoyed this pizza several times since then and it definitely lived up to my pizza lovin' husband's hype. I love the crust - I don't know how they do it but the bottom of the pizza doesn't sog! It's crispy even after picking it up and bringing it home! The restaurant is a cool dark old place with booths that are comically too small but that's just part of the charm. Everything about this place screams "this is the way we do it, if you don't like it- tough". I'm not sure why they get so many reviews calling it "greasy" I really don't find it to be any more greasy than most other pizzas (and believe me, I've tried a LOT of different kinds).

    (5)
  • Cassie S.

The pizza is just OK. Not as good as the hype, we were pretty disappointed. The set up seems unorganized which might work out a little better for them if their staff was informative. I think we will stick to Polito's or Rocco's from now on.

  • Jerry R.

I had always been a huge fan of the original Barnaby's on Jefferson, so when I moved to Mishawaka, figured I would try this location. Night & day difference. The only similarity between the 2 is the name & appearance. This Barnaby's uses different ingredients which makes it seem cheap. I've tried the pizza & the Italian beef sandwich .. neither was good. I still drive across town to go to the Jefferson location..

Pizza

Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.

Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.

Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
