Diabetics at Whataburger

Diabetics need to be a bit cautious while dining at Whataburger. Almost every burger is rich in sodium content and it is highly recommended to keep your burger cravings in control while dining at Whataburger. However, you can always satisfy your cravings for a burger by choosing Whataburger Jr. or other non-burger items from the menu.

Foods to Avoid at Whataburger for Diabetics:

A diabetic should resist from ordering any extra meat-based burger such as Double Meat Whataburger or Triple Meat Whataburger to limit the sodium intake and calories. Most burgers except the Whataburger Jr. are high in sodium and hence should be avoided.

High Cholesterol at Whataburger

Calorie intake is the main concern for people with high cholesterol while dining at a fast-food restaurant like Whataburger. Well, you can always try the Lighter & Smaller options from the menu to cut down your fat intake. Opting for grilled sandwich or burgers are preferred compared to double meat or triple meat cheesy burgers which contain high cholesterol.

Foods to Avoid at Whataburger for High Cholesterol

Cut down on your meat intake to control your high cholesterol. You must skip Double Meat Whataburger and Triple Meat Whataburger at all costs. You should also avoid Avocado Bacon Burger and Monterey Melt as both these burgers contain a high amount of fat. Whatacatch Dinner may sound tempting but the famous fish sandwich is also full of calories and unhealthy fat. Lastly, avoid French Fries and Onion Rings at Whataburger if you are already ordering a burger or any other heavy meal.

My first experience at Abuelo's was enjoyable. I loved the decor and the atmosphere of the restaurant. The staff was friendly as well. The menu however is very small so there isn't much selection. Although it's considered mexican restuarant it's not authentic. Being a mexican american I know the difference between what is authentic and what's not. The entrees on the menu are upscale mexican food. They have lots of seafood entrees and typical mexican food like quesadillas and chilles rellenos. Generally, any plate on the menu is between $10-20. Which I think it might be a bit pricey. I recommend you to try out the fajitas which are pretty good. I gave it three stars because it's a great place for social gatherings.

What a nice restaurant. Went there for a family birthday celebration, and Abuelos had something for everyone. The food was quite tasty, and our server was excellent. She was knowledgeable, accommodating, and friendly. I don't go to Indiana much, but I'd dine at Abuelos again.

Sure the place is spacious and the decor is nice but that was it for me. The food wasn't that great to me and it sure wasn't authentic Mexican. Give me real food!!

For the atmosphere and food quality, I thought this was a good bargain. The room is open and airy with interesting murals. The 'Grecian temple' exterior might be a little intidimating for those looking for a typical Mexican restaurant, but don't let that stop you. The food was better than average, with some interesting options. If I was hungrier, I would have tried the chicken with zucchini, but went with a couple of enchiladas instead - spinach and chicken, both very tasty. My friend enjoyed the steak Fajita Tacos. The Papas con Chile (a chunky, enhanced, mashed potato) was a nice substitute for Mexican rice. The Chocolate Eruption was better than similar deserts at other restaurants. The only downside was the magaritas which were a little watery and flavorless.

I have been here before; I'm still not impressed. The food is saticfactory, but nothing to write about. I love the building, ant the art on the walls, but that is as real as it gets. If you have ever had real homemade (soul) Mexican Food , this would make one upset if looking for an authentic meal. The best I can give it is 2 stars.

They start off with a normal salsa and chips feature with an added bonus: habanero salsa! I had the tenderloin filets and bacon wrapped shrimp. While the heat was moderate, the entire meal was very tasteful and the flavors were good enough for me.

Usually love this place, today's experience was not the best. Not sure if the waitress was new or overwhelmed but food came out wrong. Had to ask for things multiple times. Food was good when we got it and the lady was nice. It was just an off night I guess.

I don't get out to NW Indiana all that much and it is not often that I find decent restaurants out here. This place was pretty good and if I am ever in a pinch and want to go somewhere reliable than this place will do the trick. I like the layout of this place. It is very open and it has has a large dining room. I thought all of the artwork on the walls were rather creepy. the place was very well kept and clean. I wish I could remember what the name of the combo plate I ordered. It was actually not even a combo plate. It was a combo serving tray loaded with food. Holy crap they they hooked me up big time! I was luck enough to be able to get two meals out of it. The food was decent but I would not go as far a classifying it as authentic. It was typical watered down chain Mexican food that will appeal to the masses. Our server was on top of her game that night. She was helpful, friendly and took care of us with out being overbearing.

I think I liked it better than most of the reviewers here. I'm no authority on Mexican food, but I can tell you that I really enjoyed four out of the five types of enchiladas that came on my platter. Oddly enough, the guacamole one was gross (although the guac on the table was awesome, go figure). I'll definitely go back and try other items from the menu. Ooh. I think the picture is the thing I got. It's good, (but ask for 2 spinich ones and no guac one...)

A step above the rest of the restaurant diners around here. Turn your head 180 degrees in northwest Indiana the last 5 years and you're bound to see a local Mexican diner. This place takes it to the next level in terms of quality and offers a more upscale Mexican dining experience for lunch and dinner. I have dined here 6x in the past year and each time my meal was consistent. The wait staff is attentive in regards to drinks and complimentary chips and salsa and ensure they are filled. The food comes out very hot to the degree of being inedible for the first 2 minutes to allow it to cool off. I always order my usual steak tacos when I come here and the meat is always high quality. Abuelo's is tucked away behind Hooters in the middle of tourist-town surrounded by Hotels. If you are traveling this is a great retreat for dinner and typically does not have a long wait. Management is attentive and frequently checks in to ensure everything is to your satisfaction. If you're of Hispanic decent, I can't state that this is your Grandmother's cooking; but definitely is satiable and will leave you full and satisfied.

My husband and I stopped here with our 2 year old on the way home from Indiana over the 4th of July weekend. We were there right when it opened at 11, and the only other thing I had that morning was some toast and coffee for breakfast. About 4 hours later I had things coming out of both ends....profusely. Thanks for the food poisoning. We won't be back. Luckily my husband and toddler did not eat the same thing on the menu. I had ground beef enchilada.

They have the best Queso I have ever had. They are an upscale Mexican Restaurant and the atmosphere is very nice. Love their Sangria also. Prior to this have had their Fideo Con Pollo - absolutely fantastic!!!!! Chile Relleno's are delicious as well. I will definitely go back and recommend Abuelo's to everyone.

I went to this place with my family one day because my dad loves Mexican food. I got to say i was disappointed. I ordered Chile rellenos with rice and re-fried beans because it's one of my favorites, but I was disappointed. It was not as good like I was expecting. And we ordered stuffed mushrooms for an appetizer, but it was not good. The place was nice and big and the waitress was nice but the food was sub-par. And when I asked for the dish to be made without tomatoes because of my allergy, it came out with red tomato sauce, so they had to remake it. And the rest of my family's food was not that good either. They are accessible though. We won't be back though.

I used to come to Abuelo's when they first opened and would say they were at that time comparable to Uncle Julio's in Chicago. Today, I came back to Abuelo's for a what I thought would be a classic American Mexican meal and instead experienced your classic Kitchen Nightmares meal. It was the worst $60 I invested all week. I live in downtown Chicago and eat food ALL the time at various restaurants that can go from normal to high end. Today was terrible and I'm honestly shocked. If you care about wasting your money, read on.... 1. The atmosphere is OK. It used to be really nice. Things seem like they are getting old in this place (including the quality of service) which is sad. 2. Some say the salsa is usually a great indicator of how the meal will turn out. I knew after I tasted the non spivey salsa that I should get up and run. The non spicey salsa tasted like it came out of a jar or a can. It was terrible. The verde salsa tasted super funny. The hot salsa tasted like it should. I told the waiter that it didn't taste home made and he said "it's made fresh." I said there no way. Then he told me they make it every day but used canned tomatoes etc. Last I checked, canned does not = fresh. 3. My friend and I ordered steak tacos. The meat looked grey, was watery and tasted disgusting. We simply couldn't eat it. Instead, I just ate the beans and rice since I was STARVING. 4. The margarita swirl was OK. Order a shot of Cuervo on top. You will need it to get through the rest of your meal 5. If you are visiting from out of town, don't waste your money here. Go take a drive to Cafe Borgia on Calumet ave. There's not a whole lot of options in Indiana but you can find a few things if you look. Don't waste your money or time on what is truly a below sub par experience. 6. The "manager" saw me taking a pic of my food and asked if something was wrong. We told her the food was pretty bad and we couldn't eat it. She said she wished she would of known because she could have helped us find something else on the menu. She never offered to refund us or take a percentage off. She only offered a coupon. I explained I would never be back to eat this food and she did not look happy and just took our plates away. She asked right? Good luck Abuelo's! If you're interested in making a turn around give Gordan Ramsay a call because this is classic Kitchen Nightmares. If you don't want to serve quality food then just advertise yourself as fast food and lower your prices. No hard feelings. If you're in chicago, check out Uncle Julio's. It's a great Mexican American dinning experience for the same price Abuelo's is charging.

We just came out to celebrate my dad's birthday, and I noticed the waitress giving me dirty looks from the moment we were seated. I gave her the benefit of the doubt. Then later, when I politely asked for a water refill, she got snarky and told me to hold on. Unacceptable. I won't be back. Also, the salsas could use some work. They don't taste authentic.

With all the Mexican places around the area you would think this one would try to step up their game when it comes to quality. Abuelos used to be good back when it opened. The second time I went it was not that great. This last time it was just bad! I ordered nachos and they were soggy chips covered in cheddar cheese. One of the girls at our table wanted white cheese and the don't have it! What Mexican restaurant doesn't have authentic queso?? The service is lacking also and the girl couldn't answer most of our questions about the food. I just don't see this place being around much longer and that isn't a bad thing. If you want good Mexican food go to La Carretta down the street.

We appreciated the friendly service provided by Amber and Elizabeth and the great food. The tortilla soup was terrific! Best ever with big chunks of chicken and veggies in a homey, tasty, and satisfying broth. A bowl of that and we would have been set for dinner! The portions are big; we should have split the fajitas but my wife is a Chiles Rellenos aficionado and just had to have once of those. The fajitas were top-notch, among the best I've had where the veggies are still a bit crunchy rather than so limp they need to be handled with a spoon, The Chiles Rellenos must have been great too as my wife didn't even offer to share a bite! Despite food still being on our plates, we still ordered flan for dessert and enjoyed the egg-y caramel-y flan. Great meal, splendid ambiance, and good service. We'd for sure stop in again if we lived nearby!

Been here before and everything was so delicious but this time around...it seemed to have all gone south of the border! They must not have the same chefs or they're just skimping on seasonings. The taste of the enchiladas and the chimichangas were totally lacking flavor! Chips and salsa were still good! Not sure if I'll be back here...

The best thing about this restaurant is the atmosphere. The inside looks very nice and looks like they spent a lot of money to make sure the design of the building was nice and the layout was comfortable for guests. That's the only good thing about this place, if you want good Mexican food this is not the place to go to.

  • Kathlene L.

Over priced. Salad had no flavor and the chicken (chicken fajita salad) was cold. The pick two fajitas were ok until I came across onion peel/paper in my food. Gag! The pork for the fajitas was good, as were the guac, cheese dip and beans. $50 for 3 dinners of subpar "mexican" food and water... Could have had a better dinner at Taco Bell. All three of us left disappointed and feeling ill. Two of us were up sick most of the night and still feeling after effects well into the next day. Never again.

Better second experience at this location. I didn't order the couple of things which I didn't like last time - that helped. I got the wrong kind of taco, but they compensated by providing some free dessert, so that was a nice touch. The tres leches was quite good. I also liked my bean taco, cheese enchilada, and the spinach enchilada.

My husband & I come here for date night when we can get away. I like that even when it's packed, you still feel like you're away from everyone, the seating isn't too close to one another ao you can still have an actual conversation. The food is delicious, as is the drinks. Only thing I'm not a big fan of is how cold it can be at times.

Ate here two nights in a row, since our lodging was at a motel a few blocks away. Clean and nicely decorated.....not quite Mexican style, but nice. Sat at the bar area the first night. Our waiter was polite and served us well, but his green oxford shirt was hanging out massively over his apron. Very sloppy and unprofessional. We thought about saying something the second night, but got a different waiter. Second night ordered a meal and drinks. Food tasty and filling.

We tried this restaurant for lunch and everyone had a tasty meal. I loved the Firecracker Shrimp Salad - one of the best salads I ever had. Just enough spice to be tasty and all kinds of fresh favors. We will be back very soon and make this a favorite when we are in this area.

So this hotel came highly recommended upon check in at the Marriott hotel next door. I took them up on the offer and went to check it out. The interior of this place is beautiful! The hostess was very friendly and ushered me to a table right away. The menu was a bit cumbersome, but once I understood it, it was a breeze. The good was delicious and plenty. They definitely give you enough food for your money's worth.

Today I met an old friend for a Saturday afternoon lunch at the Abuelo's in Merrillville. The ambience was comfortable and not very crowded at all. We were seated promptly and our waitress was very good -- I wish I remembered her name because I wanted to give her a plug here. As engrossed as my friend and I were in conversation, she had the patience to return several times to see if we were ready to order and was never put off by our conversation and resulting procrastination. Anyhow, chips and several types of salsa were brought to the table early on and were very good. Once we'd ordered, our food arrived within ten minutes and was piping hot. I had the Steak Chimichangas, served with Spanish rice, refried beans, and guacamole. Very tasty and perfectly prepared. The only downside was the sheer portion size -- more suitable for two people than one. Based on my experience today, I'd highly recommend this Abuelo's and any other.

Just had dinner there. It was your typical chain food Mexican but a notch above the norm. Guacamole was very good as was the trio of salsa. Worth the money.

This place was great! A friend of mine brought me here during a visit to the area and I really enjoyed it. The food was consistently good, the different sauces tasted fresh and if they came out of a can they certainly did a good job disguising it. I had a shredded chicken enchilada that I really enjoyed. The chicken was tender and juicy and had a really nice flavor. Their re-fried beans were a bit salty but were still pretty good. My friends got a fajita platter for 2 that looked really good! All the vegis were really fresh and sauteed nicely- not over or under cooked. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, it's a bit pricy but not horrible. I think we paid about $80 for 3 people that included 4 alcoholic drinks. I would definitely go back to this place.

GASP!!!! Impressed with a chain restaurant??!?!!! In Indiana, no less! Amazing prices! AND--- I got a skinny margarita for about $5. In LA & NYC they mark up the skinny. Here--- it is cheaper than a regular marg. Kinda says something about the culture, I guess. hehehe. Happy hour menu is great! SO CHEAP! I got the veggie fajitas AND got them low-carb... so instead of tortillas I had huge lettuce to wrap them in. YES PLEASE. Had a great time. Great waiter (Michael). And even after they had obviously closed and were cleaning up... they didn't kick us out. So nice.

I've been a fan of Abuelo's since when they opened in the Cincinnati area several years ago, and have been to the Deerfield (Mason area/NE suburbs) location multiple times. I loved not only the food, but also the atmosphere: very classy, not stereotypical/kitschy Mexican that you'd find in at hole-in-the-walls or even some chains. I stopped here with my friend on a car trip from Chicago to Cincinnati, and were looking to eat somewhere after getting out of rush hour traffic in the big city. We were served promply, and very nicely, with a place to sit, and frequently with iced tea, and some delicious food! Lovely service! It's easy to get disenchanted with chain restaurants, and having stopped in Merrillville, that's all I really know of, but I found Abuelo's to be a safe bet, and like in the past back home, did not leave disappointed!

Visited Abuelo's on a Friday night for the first time. I saw mixed reviews here so had to try it to see who was wrong. Being Hispanic I always find funny all kinds of weird flavorless stuff some people call "authentic". I usually start my reviews at 5 points and then start deducting. This is hands down one of the best decorated Mexican restaurants I've seen. Even though the place was busy we were rapidly seated. 5 stars so far remain intact. I ordered a coke, a margarita and a glass of water all of which came out really quick. Only problem is that the margarita was so watered down it barely had any taste. I mean no discernible taste of tequila, triple sec, or lemon; nothing. We are down to four stars. I ordered the steak/chicken/shrimp fajita combo for $18. When I got it the first thing I noticed was a sea of onions with 4 small strips of red and green peppers on top. It literally looked like a couple of lifeboats in the middle of the Atlantic. Another thing is that those peppers were completely raw, barely warm, with no grill marks. Maybe someone forgot about them and decided to throw the iChicken was overdone and steak was just OK. Down to 3 stars For dessert we ordered Tres Leches. What a fiasco. By definition the cake is supposed to be soaked in 3 milks. Ours was as dry as a supermarket cake. It was sitting on top of a pool of what looked like melted ice cream. Weird. Down to 3 stars now. In a nutshell: yes, the food is edible. The place is not authentic, looks great but is somewhat expensive for the quality of the food you get.

I really wish I would have saved my money.... We came here on a weekday around lunch time, and ordered off the menu we were handed. The items were a bit over priced to say the least. The fajitas seemed to be of poor quality, especially for $15. They came with only two slices of green pepper, two tortillas, and not nearly enough of anything else. Our bill for two meals, and two drinks a piece exceeded $60! On the way out, I noticed a lunch menu, which would have been helpful! We could have had lunch specials for $5.95, but instead payed top dollar for mediocre food. I won't be back.

To start, I've been a fan of Yelp for a long time as a business traveler it's an imperative tool for good dining. That said, I live here in NWI and have tried most, if not all, of the Mexican restaurants. I'm not a foodie but I know what I like, probably like most of you. Came here last night because family had gotten us gift cards for the holidays so it made for a nice Valentines night out for the family. To be fair, we would normally go to La Caretta for Mexican as it's considered the place to go for this type of fare. I can tell you, we won't make that decision so lightly any more! Our experience went about as follows. We came into a light crowd (there were four of us, one in need of a high chair) waiting to be sat and were told 20 minutes. 5 minutes later we were sat in a quiet area of the restaurant...and what a gorgeous restaurant it is! Geraldo (Jerry) was very attentive and brought us our drinks (margaritas for the adults - very yummy and not shy with the alcohol at all even at the $3 drink special price) quickly. We ordered the three dip sampler as an appetizer and all three (queso, queso w/ beef, and avocado w/ guac) were tasty and fresh. Other reviewers say the food here is okay, I can tell you this was one of the better Mexican meals we've had pretty much anywhere. I had the Green Chile Pork Burrito and my wife had the Bacon Wrapped Stuffed Shrimp, the kids got the Cheese Quesadilla's (excellent value for the kids with rice and beans - $4). Interestingly, when the food was brought out, the cheese sauce had spilled out onto my wifes plate so the server offered to take it back and have a fresh one made - no need but definitely appreciated the offer and attention. Food was absolutely amazing, can't complain one bit and will go back without question. No desert as we were pretty stuffed but a decent group of choices. 4 people with drinks and app's and ended up at around $50.

Abuelo's is a pretty, lively place with a pleasant staff. I agree the food is good but there is better Mexican cusine to be had in Da Region. That said, I'd return for the nice selection of hors'douvres and cocktails.

Celebrated my abuela's birthday at Abuelo's--the Mexican food embassy. Not sure what makes this an embassy, but the food was pretty good. The carnitas tacos were pretty tasty, and the enchiladas were outstanding, especially with the queso sauce. The queso fundido was surprisingly good and the guacamole was also tasty. If this were closer to my house, I could see myself becoming a regular.

Lively atmosphere that is perfect for a special event. The food was your average Mexican food, but, for me, the decor more than made up for that. Nonetheless, it could use some better service as by the time I got I got my fajitas, everyone else at the table was nearly finished with their dinners. Lastly, the chips that are courtesy of the restaurant are not all that great, unfortunately.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque.
