Let's face it. For the most part, it's fairly useless to review a fast food joint. Unlike many local restaurants, it's not too often that the owners or franchisees are even paying attention to these reviews and they certainly don't respond. However, sometimes a restaurant leaves such a strong impression that you simply must provide feedback whether it's a terrific experience or a really bad one. This was a really bad one. This review is based solely upon a drive-thru experience at the Wendy's at 74th & Shadeland Avenue. It's a location that has received the Wendy's re-design and it's a Wendy's I used to patronize fairly regularly when I worked in the area. As I was in the area and hungry, but not really in the mood for a dine-in experience, I opted to stop at Wendy's for something different. The service was fairly quick. I ordered a #1 Combo (Single Cheeseburger - medium sized with an unsweet tea). I was asked if I wanted to support their latest charity campaign by buying a $1.00 tab that would allow me to get a free junior frosty throughout 2015 with all the proceeds going to St. Jude's Children's Hospital. All of this is fine, of course. The food, which I've always found to be a tad overpriced, was for the most part fine. My beef, and it's a big one, was the complete lack of professionalism on behalf of the staff. Beginning as I ordered, I could hear the person working the drive-thru having a verbal disagreement with a co-worker who, apparently, was questioning either her work performance or responsibilities. As I drove up to the window, this disagreement continued as she opened the window to take my money. She would momentarily try to squelch it, but then would have to say something in response. This went on 3-4 times during the time I was in the drive-thru and on two occasions she actually shut the drive-thru window so she could continue her conversation with this co-worker. It was incredibly inappropriate and unprofessional and it's rather remarkable that no supervisor caught onto it and put an end to it. Considering I'd spent a decent amount of nearly $9.00 for a drive-thru meal, I have a right to expect a degree of professionalism from the employees. It was a negative, even hostile, experience and left a negative impression that has me writing about it a day later. In a world where fast food employees are protesting to get higher pay, this is Exhibit A as to why such a movement is resisted. In the real world, people get fired for this complete lack of decorum and professionalism.
