Yikes! Who is this employee behind the counter yelling about how she's "done with this shit" because she is on second shift and someone on first shift didn't do something? What ever it is "It's retarded' per said employee. This place has come too far for that...I thought...I understand she was aggravated because the pizza oven wasn't working properly but geesh not where the customers can hear it... On another note my pizza burger was perfect! My tummy is full but boy was that UNCOMFORTABLE!

I ordered a roast beef and provolone cold cut. Little to be desired. I really wanted to like this place because I live in Garfied Park and want area businesses to thrive. But the meat was tasteless and low-grade. Not fresh deli cut and small portion. The sourdough bread was thick and just not that great. I would choose Subway or Jimmy John's over this place. However, the owners have made the restaurant cute inside with a nice porch out front. They really need to upgrade quality of meat, cheese and bread.

Way over priced for what you get I left hungry look at the photo to see what $10.00 jumbo 8" will get you not a happy camper

Once I moved near Garfield Park nearly 8 years ago, an Indy native friend insisted that I try Greiners Sub and I've been a loyal customer ever since. This apparently is the only location left in Indy and I'm so glad that it is still here. Fresh sourdough, wheat or white bread. 8 or 16 inch subs. Delicious broccoli or pasta salad available, as well as soups, chips, cookies and brownies. I always get the sourdough and I can't resist the broccoli salad. New management now, which has its ups and downs. The store is cleaner and the staff is much nicer (and also cleaner), but they got rid of several of their cold subs, including the seafood sub that was one of my favorites. Oh well, there are still plenty of delicious ones to choose from. If you are a salami lover, try the 1969 sub with "old school" fixings that include lettuce, tomato, pepperocinis, onions, oil and vinegar and oregano. The pizza burger sub is awesome, plenty of sauce and melted cheese to fill you up for a full day. The tuna salad sub is worth an honorable mention. But one of the best is their roast beef with au jus sauce...they dip the entire sub in the sauce and yet it still isn't completely soggy! One last note, be prepared to get messy. They have a weird way of cutting the bread that doesn't allow much room for the meat, cheese and toppings, so some of it squishes out of the top, more with every bite. Sometimes I just eat part of the toppings straight off the top before I bite into the rest. Don't get me wrong, I have a lot of love for Jimmy Johns, but if you're looking for something different and most importantly, local, give this place a try!

I've loved Greiner's since I was a kid. I grew up on the east side of Indy and there was a location on Shadeland Ave., near my mom's job. Going for subs was always a treat. I discovered this location a couple of years ago (all others have closed) and still stop by whenever I think of a sub. It's not as wonderful as I remember it being, but I was one of those kids who thought pretty much anything was delicious. It's still VERY good, though. The bread is baked in-house and they toast the breads, meats and cheeses before adding veggies. I usually go for the sourdough. I believe the other options are white and wheat. Meh. Boring. I've never had an issue with the staff. In fact, the lady that helped out tonight was a total sweetheart. They were closed for the evening, but she made those steak and cheese sandwiches happen for us anyway. Bless her heart. Nostalgia? Maybe. Still very yummy, though. Try it... especially since she mentioned that they might have to close up shop soon.

Tried the recommended pizza burger for a midweek lunch. I don't understand what the excitement is about. Nothing about the sandwich wowed me. The price was high for a non-wowing sandwich. Place was decorated cute and had 2 other patrons there. If they at least had a daily special or a meal deal that was a deal, I think I would go back because it's convenient and I like to support local places, but there just was nothing to attract me back in there. I WILL probably return once more to try the pizza. You can buy homemade dog treats. My dog liked, but he likes everything.

Heavy set young girl working here is not customer friendly at all. I do love their country sausage though.

We live in the area and decided to try the pizza based on the reviews here. We liked the cozy friendly atmosphere. The pizza was tasty, good rich sauce with lots of cheese. The crust is like a hand tossed thickness. As we love supporting local businesses, we will be back to try the subs!

Great Food! We were in Indianapolis visiting family who recommend we eat lunch at Greiners. When we walked in the place it was colorful with artsy signs showing the new owners personality & sense of humor. There were two employees working and four people eating. We were greeted warmly and realized that one was the new owner who was fun and full of personality. We ordered combo meals that included sandwich, drink & awesome chips. I highly recommend the three cheese toasted cheese sandwich - it was to die for!! The chicken salad sandwich was amazingly good. The bread is made daily on the premises and was delicious. While eating our food there was a steady stream of patrons ordering. I highly recommend this sandwich shop.

2nd trip decided to try the pizza and the meatball. The marinara is rich, dark, and barely edible.... Had to drop a star. Do not eat these items. Also had grilled chicken sub and it wasn't great. Staff was wayyyy better this time however very slow and the food was awful. Stick to the italian beef or the turkey subs and its pretty good. 1st trip had the Italian beef with Gardino peppers and provolone cheese. They dip the entire sandwich in au jus and it was better than expected. The bread wasn't that soggy and its pretty darn good. I have a one year old and the manager Tina was very strict about the no turkey in the kids meals lol she should relax and not be so serious. If a customer ask for something that's not ridiculous you should probably just go ahead and try to accommodate them. It was my first time and she was like "if my owner was here I could ask but they're not" You're a manager and are suppose to be a decision maker. Regardless my daughter enjoyed her """8 inch"""" turkey sandwich and it was good as well. I will be back but I'm going to growl if I see Tina.

I love Greiners. I always order the turkey cold on wheat served up old school style. On my trip in today the new owners have a sign listing the cost for extras. My favorite is $.15 for extra vinegar and oil. Hopefully, the shop will continue to deliver wonderful subs and keep the quaint feel it's had for many many years.

Something about this part of town reminds me of a typical community in eastern Pennsylvania: the age of the houses, the walkable character, the Mom and Pop (or Grandma and Grandpa) places with signs dating from back from the Eisenhower administration. And best of all, the signature sandwich at Greiner's Subs is called a hoagie! Could it be a hat tip to the Keystone State? The bread (French, whole wheat, or sourdough) doesn't look anything special, but it feels more legit and less pre-frozen/processed than Subway's many varieties. And the comparisons continue: most of the options are very similar to what you'd find at America's most ubiquitous fast-food joint, but the Greiner's has a bit more to choose from. And the sandwiches may seem pricey at first, but remember that they are 8" or 16", so they really measure up in the long run. Toppings are certainly no less fresh than Subway. In the end, the sandwiches here are nothing earth-shattering, and it might be hard for the place to distinguish itself if the slowly gentrifying neighborhood had a bigger variety of options. But service, though glacially slow at my last visit, is upbeat and homey. Apparently Greiner's has been an Indy institution for over 40 years (sometimes with more locations than just this one), but I only recently learned about it. Hugged next to a bigger, more prominent building, it doesn't stand out. But the hipsters from down the street in Fountain Square need to give this place a shout--after all, FS already has a Subway, and a trip to Greiner's counts as a defiant but good-natured anti-corporate gesture.

There were 2 women working today; one of which appeared to be an owner. (She had personality, while her helper/employee did not.) *New owners, this business has recently been sold. It all seemed very disorganized and both women did not seem to know what the other was doing. Chaos would be a kind way to describe it. There are little signs stuck up all over the place, so you'd need 10 minutes just to stand in one place to process them all and know what the soup was and what 'old school style' meant. The signs are cute, artistically done, but just kinda scattered everywhere. As for the sandwich; I found it just weird the way the make them. They start with either 8" or 12" of white, wheat or sourdough. But strangely they cut it down the middle, but across the top. So you only have a narrow crevice for your sandwich ingredients. So now your sandwich stuff is popping out the center on the top, so when you bite into it, your nose/face gets smooshed into the lettuce or peppercinis that make up your sandwich. Just a really poor design choice (unless your goal is to cut down on the toppings while making it appear full... Wink, wink) My sandwich was ok. Just ok. And strangely, while my kids and I didn't need it, there did not appear to be a restroom. And then grossly, while my sandwich maker (the one lacking personality) wore gloves, she had a string or yarn type bracelet that had tails or ties that hung down about 3" and were just flopping and dragging through everyone's sandwiches and all of the ingredients. Brecht. Nasty grossness.

When I have to work late, this is where I get my dinner. They have a great, unique taste I first discovered many years ago at their former North Keystone location (RIP). But! I noticed today they have taken over the spot on the corner of Guilford and Westfield, across from the firehouse in Broad Ripple! A dream come true!

I don't eat subs, but I make an exception for Greiner's....I love it!!

I decided to wait until after I'd had dinner to write this review...lest I be forced by my rumbling stomach to abandon my soup and salad plans for one of Greiner's delicious creations. Whether you call them subs, grinders, hoagies or heros...Greiner's makes the best of them! Sandwiches here are made with fresh-baked bread and honest-to-goodness ingredients. This is not a chain and it shows. Unlike some of the mass market deli sandwich joints, all the concoctions at Greiner's have a unique taste, not an assembly line taste. The two locations also serve up soups, cookies and salads. But one of Greiner's greatest strengths - apart from the subs - is their selection of sides....especially the broccoli salad. These goodies have that homemade taste that will take you back to the church picnic or neighborhood pitch-in, I declare! Greiner's is not health food, but then again, we all need to stray once in a while and one should not do so frivolously. Next time you have a hankering for a real submarine sandwich, make a beeline for Greiner's.

Got the Italian Beef Sub, chips & soft drink for $9. The Italian is always excellent, dipped in au jus and enough peppers to give it a little kick.

Food is absolutely five stars. Soft, fresh buns, baked in-house daily put these subs over the top. There is plenty of meat and toppings in the sandwiches, and the fillings are high quality. BUT. And this is a big but. The reason we haven't gone back yet was the terrible service. There were 2 employees there, and we arrived about an hour and a half before closing time. There were 2 men eating when we got there, and a man and his son arrived before we left...so a total of 6 customers in about 30 minutes on a cold, wet, winter night. We walked in and weren't greeted at all, because the woman at the counter was chatting with one of the men who was eating. When she finished her conversation, she gave us a dirty look and said in an exasperated tone, "I am never going to get out of here tonight," (no other words) then stood in front of the cash register and looked at us. When I realized she wasn't going to respond to my smile and, "Hi," I commenced ordering my food: Italian Beef, no veggies. He ordered a cold roast beef sandwich. The woman walks away, without a word to us, and starts to make the sandwiches. Yes, she wore clean gloves. Everything was refrigerated and the prep area looked clean. She began to put toppings on my sandwich and I had to stop her; "Please...no veggies on my sandwich." She let out a grouchy noise and rolled her eyes at me before picking the veggies off. In making his sandwich, she finally spoke, "Whadaya want on this?" He said, "What are my choices?" She looked at him, looked at the cooler, and said, "What do you want?" We were made to feel like a total inconvenience by this woman, when all we did was order 2 simple sandwiches. We eat out twice a week on average, and this was hands-down the most hostile customer service I've ever received. But again, THE SANDWICHES are AWESOME! Mine was hot and doused in spicy au jus and I had to eat it with a fork, which is perfection. He really liked his too, even though it was just beef, lettuce, cheese, and peppers. I'm sure we'll go back eventually, but neither of us enjoyed being ignored (2nd employee) and having someone be rude to us (1st employee). Pizza is on the menu too, along with bread sticks, cookies, and some salads. I'd say the main draw at Greiner's, as the name suggests, is the subs.

Called to place ab order for delivery. I live 2 blocks from this place and have a terrible flu - just wanted to order soup because there is nothing in my house to eat. Got some rude woman who told me they really are not delivering today, I mean technically they are but the owner told them to try not to...even after I told them I am two blocks away and am willing to wait an hour or two. Lost my business. Forever. Which is a shame considering my constant patronage and proximity.

I just had MUCH the same experience as Cecily. I live .6 miles from the restaurant, told her i didnt mind the wait, and that I am stuck on my couch ill without a car. The lady was rude and short and after I offered to tip very generously she said fine but with a $5 delivery fee and a $30 minimum. WHAT!!! I wont return ever again.
