OMG...this is a fantastic local bakery on the southside. Boyden's has become my favorite bakery in Indy. Lookout Long's, Boyden's may just have a better donut....those are fighting words to some :) I have visited Boyden's several times before writing this, so the review is long overdue. Upon every visit, there has always been a wide selection of delicious pastries and cookies to nom on. You must try the "Cannonball". This thing is unique to Boyden's and is hard to describe. It weighs about a half pound and feeds 2-4 people. It comes with either chocolate or white frosting and taste somewhat like a chocolate oatmeal cookie. I have had nothing like it, and it draws me back every time. Also, don't forget about the cakes, cookies, donuts, danishes, and the scrumptious "alligator". nom nom nom. Next time your on the southside, swing by Boyden's for your sugar fix.

I am not able to postive a great review. This is unfortunate as I was hopeful. I wanted to get a few samples of their treats. I read the Yelp reviews of bakery in my area on a Sunday, so I stopped by when Boyden's Southside Bakery was recommended. I picked up a peanut butter cookie, a butterfly (sugar) cookie, and White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookie. My cookies were OK. The peanut butter cookie was awesome! This was my 1st cookie so I was excited to try the rest! The White Chocolate Macadamia Nut Cookie was alright. The butterfly cookie was stale and had hair in it (ahhh)! Its homemade, so there is a risk of something like this happening. I can forgive the hair, somewhat. But it was so stale and hard. Maybe I should have gotten the smiley face cookie. I was also dissapointed I could not try any slices of cake. I was not into having a donut. I think I will skip this place next time.

I love Boyden's! I remember going here as a kid. I've always liked the Smiley Face cookies. My wife & I were craving some doughnuts this morning, so we had to take a trip to Boyden's! Their doughnuts are very delicious! I also had to get a Smiley Face cookie, of course. I can't visit Boyden's without getting one! Our daughter wanted a Butterfly cookie, as well. The staff are always very friendly, and their baked goods are always delicious! When a bakery has been around since 1932, then that's proof of how awesome they are!

It's in a sketchy location that would usually steer you away but I'm glad I went in. The inside could use a facelift but the variety of cakes, cookies, and donuts are great. I didn't get to try their popular item, the "alligator" but enjoyed the cinnamon roll and glazed donut. It was a good experience but I wouldn't make any special trips to eat there although if I'm around the area, I would stop by.

This is like the Long's of the southside (yes I know there is a Long's on Southport but I'm an Indy native so don't judge). They carry delicious donuts that are pretty damn good. I love the selection of donuts they have, but they have a very nice variety of cakes, cookies, brownies, and coffee cakes. The coffee cakes came in a few varieties which would be good if you're hosting a brunch or some type of shower. I think the prices are very comfy with what they offer. They are a cash only joint FYI. Which is fine, I understand. The girls who work there are sweet and you can tell this is a regular spot for locals. My personal fav are the cinnamon rolls and of course the cute lookin' suga cookies!!! Check it out. You won't be disappointed...especially when you stop here before your 9:30 am movie to sneak in some breakfast!!! Not saying I did that, never....

Always friendly, always helpful. Great donuts. Outdated look, but who cares? I've come in multiple times in the middle of the day and they're always hoppin'. The food is what counts and its delish! I asked today and they've been there since the 1930s...awesome to find a gem like that in our fast paced world - who cares what the decor is!

This is my new favorite bakery. Located on the edge of the old German Market Gardens area, with the area's charming architecture and landscaping, it's been there since 1932! I tried the cherry cheese Danish, which had just come out of the oven. Fresh, tender, full of cherries and creamy cheese filling--and not just a dab. Loads of both. Then I tasted the alligator bars. Wow! They weren't just out of the oven but we're still extremely fresh and tender. I got my kids some butterfly and smiley sugar cookies. They were good, not outstanding in flavor or texture, but wonderful in decoration. My son's cookie had sunglasses, a ball cap, and was smiling with its tongue out one corner (a meme). I've read reviews that are scared of the area. Don't be. It's not "sketchy". A middle-aged lady got out of the Benz parked next to me. U Indy is a couple of lights down, and a Montessori school and St. Rich Catholic school are closer, as is the IMAX. The Market Garden area is full of beautiful old European-style houses from 100 years ago, many on large grounds. There's some pricy real estate very close by, as well as an enclave of real middle class neighborhoods. It wasn't built within the last few years and is evocative of 20th century Americana. Investors take note: the area is overlooked and undervalued. Bottom line: best Danish I've ever had, in an interesting neighborhood.

Boyden's is a treasure trove of sugary goodness! This may be considered a crime, but I don't particularly care for doughnuts. However, Boyden's is my exception. Their simple glazed yeast doughnut is heavenly! It's fluffy and never greasy, only yeasty. They have tasty seasonal iced sugar cookies as well which are delightful aesthetically. I always pick-up a box before I go see my nieces and co. They also have a crazy cookie called the "Cannon Ball." One can obtain this delightful object with chocolate or white icing. Personally, I have never strayed from the chocolate icing. It's kind of like an 'everything but the kitchen sink' type of cookie with an oatmeal cookie/oatmeal cream pie flavor profile going for it. I know that might sound strange - but TRY IT! You won't regret it!

I love the fresh brownies and cookies.I'm a big fan of this southside family owned bakery. I have been buying their products for as long as I can remember and have tried just about everything they sell. In addition to the brownies and cookies, the cheese danish is one of my favorites. If you like hot cross buns, try them here before Easter. Very, very good.

Tried cheese danish and a brownie. both are good, not overall sweet (the biggest problems of desserts here in the midwest). I wish it could be even less sweet, but it's good enough. The ladies have an interesting way of counting changes, cute. I like it and will go back.

Great bakery. When I get a donut craving this is where I go. Little local spot at Hanna and 31. Any U of I students and professors should really be getting these on a regular basis if they don't already. They have a good selection of both cake and yeast donuts, both of which are awesome. Their French Cruller is especially fantastic. I think they are cash only, but I'm not 100% on that. They also had some breads and cakes, so I'm sure if you're looking for something special they can help you out.

Neat little family-owned bakery on the Southside (in case the name didn't give away the location). Just as good as the other, more popular bakeries, without the 20-minute wait. Try the classic glazed yeast donuts.

I am a long time customer and should have written a review before now. I absolutely love the butter cream cinnamon coffee cake. It is amazing every single time. Just the right amount of sweetness and cinnamon with wonderful flakiness of the pastry. I have ordered cakes and also had the donuts but the coffee cake brings me back time and time again.

I really wish I could give it 5 stars. I do! But alas, I cannot. :( I've had cake from here several times as my mother-in-law loves it and orders from there for birthdays, showers, etc. I've always liked it. So, when it came time to order a cake for my son's 1st birthday party, I decided to go with Boyden's. Stopped by on a Sunday morning after church about a month before I needed it to get my order for the two cakes (one for him to smash into) initiated. They were friendly enough and talked with me about what I had in mind but advised that the owner would be the one to discuss the finer details with me and tell me exactly how they could decorate it to go along with the party's Noah's Ark theme. So I left my contact info with them and waited on her to contact me. I also emailed her a picture of the invitation for the party to give an idea of the theme. I never heard from her, so I called them back. She wasn't available to speak with so I left a message indicating that I'd like to talk with her about the cake and I got a. Still never heard from her. I also sent a separate email to the girl I spoke with on the phone. Never had a response to that either. I eventually gave up and cancelled the order and procured my cakes elsewhere. Won't be returning here. :(

Love this bakery. Found it by chance driving from Greenwood back to the City and was happily surprised. The outside did not look too great but the pastries were delicious. We ordered the cream puffs and they were huge, full of cream and yummy. It is out of the way for me but I will go back. The cream puffs were that good.

Dear Frank W., Boyden's Bakery does still exist and they do still have the molasses sugar cookies about which you rave. We stopped in to Boyden's this past Saturday morning on the recommendation of a couple of Mike's coworkers. Though it is in run-down strip mall as Frank states and the inside of the bakery looks like it has seen better days, but that is just part of the charm of the place. We loved the carmel-apple cake donuts - I ate one right in the shop and took another for the road. We also picked up some adorable and delicious Halloween-decorated sugar cookies and I couldn't resist the "Cannonball" cookie: a "kitchen sink" sort of creation that combines donut and cake pieces, raisins, molasses and probably several other things into one big hunk o' cookie, replete with either chocolate or vanilla glaze on top. Hold it in your palm and you'll know why the bakers chose the term "cannonball"...it is the power bar of cookies. Trust me, it took three days for two of us to consume it. The bakery also has a massive variety of coffee cakes and danish and does custom cakes for special occasions. The real treat at Boyden's, though, is Megan, the current owners' granddaughter. Stop in for a donut and she will give you a mini lesson on the history of this little neighborhood corner, including the complete scoop on the bakery. She is the embodiment of enthusiasm and is so proud of her family's involvement with Boyden's - would that all small businesses had this kind of staff ambassador among the ranks! Another thing Boyden's has going for it: it has some of the longest hours I've ever seen...if you can't make it by here to get a treat or two, it's nobody's fault but your own!

I hope this place still exists. It's in a run down little strip mall and you might find it a bit depressing, but, if you go, try the molasses sugar cookies with jam in the middle. They are incredibly delicious.
