First of all, lets start of saying... I LOVE mongolian bbq. Now BD's Mongolian BBQ was awful. Walked in at 6, and it was kind of empty. There was only a few tables, sure it was during the week, but still. I had red flags go up right away. I have been to other mongolian bbq places and have loves their prices and selection of food. The price was very expensive, $13 for one small bowl. It is not unlimited and you can not get a salad. Seriously, how cheap are you that I can not get a salad with my $13 bowl? If you get unlimited, it costs another $3, and a doggie bag costs another $3. So you are talking about $19 for unlimited with a doggie bag. I asked why they are so expensive, and the waiter said "people get a weeks worth of meat for $13." I was interested in getting a meal, not a weeks worth of meat. Sure they have steak, shrimp, chicken, etc. You may get a heaping pile of meat if you want. I wanted meat and veggies, a normal meal. I go up to cook my selection, and they cook it so long that it had charred pieces of burnt crap. GROSS. I was displeased. I wont ever be back. If you are interested in getting your meat cooked (overcooked) for your entire week, come to BD's. There are other mongolian bbq places that are much better.

Had to wait in a crowded line. the food was tasty but nothing special. Food area not kept clean or full. It's more the experience of the cooking than the food itself.

I moved to California a few years ago and I would sell my soul to have a Bd's Mongolian Barbeque in the greater Los Angeles area. Okay, maybe selling my soul is going a little too far but I do love this place. It works like any other Mongolian restaurant out there. You get a bowl and pack it full of meat (if that's your thing), tofu (YUM!), and vegetables. You then get to pick what kind of sauce you want and it's cooked up on a 600 degree grill. The best part is that if it sucks you only have yourself to blame. And, if it's wonderful, that's all you, too. I have never had anything bad here. I don't know if that's because I'm a fabulous cook or if it's because their sauce choices here are better than at most Mongolian BBQs. They also serve their BBQ with tortillas and white rice (which I'm not usually a fan of but it works in this case). It's an awesome combo. Their lunch special is under $10 (or at least it used to be). It's a tad more for dinner which is all you can eat. I've never tried that option though because one big bowl from there is really all I can eat. It's a chain so if you have one near you go and go often. Just don't tell me about it, okay?

my supervisor took me here the night before a conference the next day our server couldn't have been nicer, the place was spotless, i'm not really a fan of raw food buffet, just too many risks i've NEVER been sicker than that night & the next day if you want to totally mess on yourself, spent hours in the toilet have dinner here

Absolutely love this place. I was very skeptical on arrival because of price, but if you go with an appetite it will be worth it. The cook Jimmy was so great. I was more than satisfied. I do wish it was a little cheaper but I will still definitely be going back!

My dear readers, I hadn't been back to this restaurant in a few years, but what a difference it made! First, let me start by saying all of our servers, waitstaff, and cooks were excellent. This review is not against them. This review is against the establishment itself. There were so many gnats and flies hovering over the bar that I felt like I was in a street bazaar in India. The restaurant itself was filthy, and the railing around the bar had a broken (and haphazardly repaired) section jutting out. A small child was trying to make her way to the restroom and jammed herself against the edge while I was there. If they can do something about all the damned flies and clean up the place, it may be worthwhile to return. It's very expensive for what you get, but I guess they charge for the extra organic protein in the meals. I remain yr humble servant, Avi K.

Bd's was just, alright. There is so much hype around the Mongolian grill, but I wasn't all that impressed. Things I did like: 1. The service: Our waiter was very amicable and the cooks at the grill were entertaining. They didn't fail to make me chuckle while I waited for my food. 2. The $2 second plate that I could take home for leftovers. (It took me three meals to finish these leftovers!) Things I wasn't fond of: 1. The cleanliness: There really wasn't any. The grill area was filthy which grossed me out because that's where my food is being cooked. The bar to fill up your bowl was a mess. Food was littered all over the counters and I saw another customer use the raw meat tongs to pick up other food...gross. 2. The soda: It was flat. I sent my first soda back in exchange for a different soda and received a just as flat soda. 3. Freshness of the food: It kind of tasted like it had been sitting out all day. Meh.

We've been to several of these stir fry places in the past, so we were familiar with the concept. Service wasn't very attentive. My food wasn't cooked through and I couldn't eat it. Tried a little of the salad bar. It was your basic iceberg lettuce and dressing variety. Chili had a strange taste, so couldn't eat that either. I left feeling just as hungry as when I arrived. We couldn't find a server for my husband to get another bowl, so we called it quits, paid, and left.

Not a very good value. It is kind of fun to make your own bowl of ingredients for the cook to grill - gives you room to customize your meal a bit or add more of the ingredient you like. The grill surface did not look very clean, and left black residue on my food. Don't come here if you have ANY food allergies at all, is my recommendation. Your ingredients can be partially mixed in with others' on the grill. Service was average; not checking on us very often, but she did bring us tortillas and lettuce wraps. It seems that if you just ask for tortillas and lettuce wraps, the server will bring them for free. With the ability to make your own food, you can avoid spicy ingredients, and still create a dish that you like (e.g. Sweet and sour pork). For the money, I don't think this restaurant is a good value, though. It was fairly deserted for lunch on a weekday.

The location on 146th had always been better, but they've been closed for some time. First the hostess seated a party of equal size that i could see on her sheet had been after us. When questioned on it she stuttered and gave a mumbled non-answer about us being next. We get to the bar and they're out of two different meats, with apparently no more prepared and no intention of preparing more. Fine, I go with Plan C. Get to the sauces, they're out of pad thai and BBQ, which would be my and my wife's favorites. I asked the manager for more pad thai and she went in the back to get it. I gave up waiting after standing around for 10 minutes. She later said that she had sent someone to tell me they were out. I had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for the pittance of sauce i did get. My wife absolutely hated what she tried as a substitute. We set our food down and discovered they were also out of brown rice, so we received white. We both went to the salad bar, where my wife had to ask for more shredded cheese (it had been out for at least the 20 minutes it took us to make our stir fry plates) and I had to ask for both soup cups and soup spoons, while another guy had to ask for the little containers you put your sauce in. We finally get to the table to eat and realize they'd never brought us silverware. I exclaimed, admittedly somewhat loudly, how damn tired I was of having to ask for stuff and how I was very irritated about them being out of damn near everything and snatched silverware off of the nearest table to us that actually had some. I used to really enjoy this place. Not any more. That was a complete CF that I'll not willingly subject myself to again. Oh, and prices have gone up a LOT. $13 for one freaking plate of mediocrity? No thanks.

Good atmosphere but food wasn't up to par. Bill for one person came to just under $22 for one bowl of food and some egg fried rice. Meats and veggies were okay but were burned on the grill. Egg fried rice was super salty having been over saturated in soy sauce. Server was fair though a bit slow on water refills. Over all it wasn't quite the meal I had expected and the price was a bit more than the food deserved.

Never learn my lesson. My son's wanted to go back and I obliged. Prices went way the hell up. Used to seem like $12 or so for unlimited trips. Now it's $16+ unlimited and rice is not included - that's a separate order! The salad bar was empty and neither bar was maintained. Very sad. The happy, party grilling guys were no longer funny and party-like but just cooked and scrapped the leftovers in the center hole. You would figure the Walmart/Golden Corral people would have left with the higher prices but OH NO they were still there. I thought one might carry the whole rib-eye meat container to the round cooking surface without the bowl. They closed Carmel location - I see the end. Still, we had a good time.

I've been a fan of BD's for a long time. Heck, my wife and I were supposed to go there for our first date! This was the first time we decided to bring the kiddos along. I look for a good time, make sure to ham it up with the cooks and all of that other jazz. Even though they have a number of different combinations to put together, ultimately, for some reason, my plate always ends up tasting the same. Maybe that's just me. But I digress. Other than the cooks, the wait staff was far less than stellar. In a place where you essentially make your own plate, the server this time, did a bad job of keeping the table clear of clutter. And I only had water, yet, I had to ask sever a few times for a second cup of water. I was hurting. Especially because I had a SUPER spicy dish. The buffet had some serious wipe down issues, and also some stocking "challenges" as they say in the corporate world. In a place where multiple people have access to potentially hazardous food, you gotta make sure that tongs and stuff stay rotated. I'm not sure that was happening, but it was late in the day, I'd say that management probably needs to add some additional staffing later in the day to wrap up and finish strong. Again, to me, the draw to BD's is the experience, the banter with the cooks and the good company. And who doesn't love a place that lets you puts stuff in a wrap?

Could take a lesson from Flat Tops model. I would gladly drive 2 hours to the closest one that I know of rather than come back here. There is no organization and the line is chaos. It is not first come first serve, it is who can scramble to the first open spot first. No one directs the line traffic. Be prepared to wait an hour in line if you plan on being a decent person.

Just had the worst experience here. From the restaurant being trashed when we arrived so we were sat at a dirty table. The floor staff was awful and there were items, like mushrooms, out of stock. The only redeeming part of this was the cooling staff was great and what food we did have tasted good.

I agree with all the reviewers, this place has gone down hill. The 146th St. location was better by far. I stopped for dinner on 82nd St. location today after work solo around 5pm and it was not busy at all. Went to the food bar and couldn't find what I used to get at all, so my creation changed drastically. No more sausage, tomatoes. Some good variety on seafood meats though. Back in Southern Cal., I went to a real Mongolian BBQ and it was one of my favorite places to eat when I lived there. The sauces were more of a homemade broth rather than these that look like they were poured out of a jar like ketchup. Plus the vegetables were more suitable in Cal. These were crazy choices, for instance corn? Who has corn in a Mongolian bowl? Out in Cal., they had real Mongolians working the pit with wood sticks. They were experts. Plus the price was less than $10. Today I had 1 salad bar trip, 1 Mongolian bowl and a coke on a Monday, My cost with 15% tip was $23.60. Good thing I didn't order dessert.

Ok, it's a chain. But, it is the only place to get proper Mongolian BBQ in the Indy area. BD's is definitely no frills, and it has its highs and lows. If you are hungry or really like Mongolian BBQ, it's a 4 star experience. For those that have never been, here's what you need to know: You begin your experience by being seated like it is full service. If you have your wits about you, you know to skip the appetizers-they are not needed at a place like this. Then you make your food selection, see below, and then you treat yourself to the self serve food bars. Salad bar is standard. The Mongolian Grill bar requires some knowledge. You begin with your selection of protein (seafood, meat, poultry, and/or vegetarian options), pile on your vegetables of choice, then fill a cup with your sauces and seasonings of choice. Once that's done and you've grabbed an egg (you'll regret it if you don't), you go over to a station at the grill. Then the Mongolian masters slice up your meal with swords on their incredibly hot, incredibly large circular grill. Food: There are two main options: 1 bowl or unlimited bowls. 1 bowl is about $15 and unlimited is $17.99.Unlimited comes with the salad bar, which would be $7 if you ordered it separately. Obviously you go with the unlimited bowl option. If you go with one bowl, you have to tediously spend time at the build-your-bowl bar trying to play Jenga with the food options. If you go with the unlimited, you can build several small bowls of different varieties in order to try multiple combinations of flavors. This makes for a more relaxing experience and allows you to enjoy the dining experience a bit longer. Once you sit down with your masterpiece, you have the option of having white or brown rice, tortillas, or lettuce wraps. They are okay, but are in no way necessary to complete the meal. Service: It's a chain, so you get chain style service. Its attentive enough, but not great. The servers are mostly high school aged kids, so they don't know much-especially when it comes to beer. We were offered their new "local beer selection". I inquired what beer they had. Our server stumbled to find his list but didn't know anything about specifics (like what Sun King they had, he just knew they had it). The most you can ask for is that they keep your drink full and bring you fresh bowls to make multiple trips to the grill. Its an enjoyable switch up to your normal meal and is most enjoyed on a week night when there is little to no wait at the grill.

I am always up for a good mongolian grill. The service is great and the available ingredients promising, they just need to do better job with the grilling itself.

Visited this location a couple times, normally great service. Went last night as a party of 8, horrible service. Could never get a refill, didn't get our rice till our meal was over, no plates for salad bar and waitress got testy with one of our party members. Won't go back

I needed to fill the whole in my life after Stir Crazy was closed and this fit the bill. Granted it's a little pricey but the options are limitless and you can pay to get unlimited refills (hello leftovers!). It can get packed because the space is so small, but if you like fresh stir fry it is well worth the wait. They even have tofu and gardein products for vegetarians! Even though everything is all cooked on one massive stone, if you tell them you're vegetarian they will specially clean you "zone" and use seperate utensils on your stir fry so you don't get meat residue on it. All around win!

If I could give no stars I would. We come in and there is only 4 people there eating for a Sunday night. We had to wait for the three employee s they had to drag tables together to seat the 6 in front of us. I grabbed menus and sat ourselves. We had our server come take our drink order. We were told to go on up. We did no bowls we went back to get them from waitress. We have them cook our meal and cooks very quiet not fun at all. I order a fruit margarita with sugar and they put salt on it and I could not drink it out of the tiny soft drink straw. They remade it and left out the alcohol! We had to ask for more water for more pop for more bowls etc. They were out of several sauces. Employees hung out in the back and never were around. I personally won't go back. Two people to eat with pop and one margarita with no alcohol and the bill was $49.00. Yikes not again. Beware!

We went Fri Oct. 3rd, 2014 around 2pm. The three of us arrived around 2pm. We were one table of maybe 5 in the place. The waiter got to us after 15 minutes of waiting, but he apologized for the wait time. They did seem to have another waiter however, so I am unsure of the holdup. We all ended up getting the unlimited buffet ($12). The waiter never offered to explain how the restaurant works, although we all had been there before. Like all the other Bd's restaurants, the buffet style ingredients were aplenty, and all looked fresh. The buffet area is a bit crammed, and there is hardly any walking room between the salad bar and the meat section. The spices and sauces table was backed into a corner, and was very very close to the wall. The floor in that corner was very wet, but had no wet floor sign. The wet floor stayed that way, despite bringing it up to employees multiple times. The cooking station was the same as the other Bd's restaurants, clean and well taken care of. The cooks were very friendly, and keeping a good conversation without taking away from their chef duties. By the time we got back to our table, (~15 minutes) the waiter had just brought our drinks, and came back a minute or two later with our tortillas and brown rice (both of which are free, despite past reviews). Our food was good, and well cooked. Overall, It was a 3 star visit. The food was good, but the poor arrangement of the buffet area, the water on the floor not being cleaned up, and the slow waiting staff knocked down this review from a 5 star to a 3.

Bd's is great. No frills, great prices and good food. Definitely recommend if you are looking to customize your meal to your exact taste. Oh and did I mention unlimited bowls for only a couple bucks extra. Now that's what I'm talking about.

I used to really like this place, but it has seen better days. It desperately needs some sprucing up. It didn't seem like there was anyone manning the food bars (both meats/veggies/sauces and the little salad bar). Both had stray pieces of food thrown about in the wrong containers. Some weren't even in a container, having just landed on the side of the bar. How hard is it for a server to come through and wipe things off and make sure everything is organized? Our waiter was extremely inattentive. He didn't have many tables because they weren't that busy, yet it took about 15 minutes to get a tiny bowl of rice. (He brought one tiny bowl of rice for three people. In the past, each person got their own bowl.) He was also wearing colored contacts that made him look he'd be better suited for working at a haunted house. The actual grilled food was alright, if not a little bit overdone. The grill guys might want to stop chit chatting with each other and the customers (it seemed like some of the customers were their friends) and concentrate on what they are supposed to be doing. One great thing is they have added the Coca-Cola Freestyle machine. It's designed so customers can get their own drinks in a variety of different flavors. There are tons of flavors to choose from. Unfortunately, BD's has decided to put the machine in the back, so the wait staff has to bring you your drink. I like to look at all the different flavors that are offered. Obviously this couldn't be done since the machine is in the back. What's the point of that??? If the machine were out where customers could get their own drinks, it would be one less thing for the servers to have to do since it takes them so long to do anything. I wound up just ordering water. When we were getting ready to leave, we saw our waiter hand the people seated next to us a Coca-Cola Freestyle menu!!! I even asked him when he took our order "Why is it in the back? I can't see all the flavors." I don't know why he didn't give us one of those drink menus, but when we saw him hand it to the table next to us he lost a few of his tip dollars. They also need to have bowls up on the food bar, or at least tell people when they order that their bowls will be arriving soon. We saw so many people go up to the food bar with dumbfounded looks on their faces. "Where are the bowls?" It's all about communication, and our waiter desperately needed a lesson in that.

Wow. That was bad. Started the second we walked in. Look around and half the place is empty with only one table occupied outside. Three parties sitting and waiting when we walk up to the hostess. She informed us she was staggering seating a because wait staff was behind. Huh? They bring you drinks and you do everything else! Not sure how you get behind. The place was a mess and I knew I should have walked out but we were hungry and usually like BD's in other locations. Everything from the menus to the counters seemed to be sticky. As we put our food in the bowl my wife almost wiped out because the floor was so slippery. She put some potatoes in her bowl and when she went to eat it the middle of a couple were actually still frozen. She didn't eat the meal and certainly didn't want to go back up. They at least had sense enough to comp her meal. Wait staff was slow and rude. Had to ask for napkins and silverware. Getting a drink was nearly impossible. Just terrible all around. The first ever in my life I actually walked out without leaving a tip. They do one thing. How do you not get that right? Almost forgot, my wife had to go up to the hostess to ask for a kids menu. The woman said she didn't have any and scratched on a tiny piece of paper the four items they have. I wish I was joking.

We came here to celebrate my birthday and were completely disgusted by the lack of attention to cleanliness. Like other reviewers have said, there are flies everywhere around and in the food. I could understand a few because it is hot out but we are talking 40+ flies on one food bar. That is NOT acceptable and definitely not the quality of food you would expect from $18.00 per person not including drinks. We immediately set down our bowls and told the server we were leaving. He told the manager and the manager didn't even come over to apologize, as I'm sure that's not the first time this has happened. I would not recommend this place AT ALL. The board of health should be called because this place is gross.

Let me start by saying I normally never provide feedback about dining establishments. I feel compelled to this time. I used to love this restaurant. I visited yesterday (6/21/2015) for the first time in about a year or so. I haven't been that disappointed in a long time. This location has went downhill quickly. First off, the staff seemed incredibly disinterested. Since you get your own food at this type of place, I wouldn't think it would be too much to get a refill on water or maybe a few napkins. but it was. Our servers disinterest in doing her job it was borderline offensive. Anything we asked for she immediately forgot and when she did return we had to ask for it again! Her disinterest was something that was shared by almost the entire staff. All of the staff could be seen standing around and doing very little. The only ones who actually appeared to be trying were the 3 cooks at the grill. The two of the older cooks actually tried, the 3rd younger guy tried, but didn't do very good of a job. He either severely under cooked the food or burnt it. As for the aesthetics of the restaurant. To put it bluntly it was FILTHY. There wasn't a clean walking surface in the entire area. It was covered in dirty, grease, and grime. the bathrooms were deplorable. The men's restroom had one working toilet and it appeared that the floors had not been mopped in days. You could barely stand up without sliding around. The women's restroom was even worse. Until they get this location fixed up and under competent management, I would encourage you to save your money and eat some where else. it just isn't worth it anymore.

Kelly R. and I went on a Sunday and managed to miss the church-crowd, which is always a plus! You could tell there had been a herd of people before us because the food needed to be freshened up, but once that happened it was much better. This is definitely a chain restaurant so it will be like the other BD's where you pick your own ingredients.

This restaurant is what it use to be. I haven't been to this restaurant in a few years. My partner and I went because we were on the Northside. We got there and was seated immediately, but it took almost ten minutes for a server to come to our table. Once she got there she asked what we were having. We told her we didn't want the soup and salad but informed us on the weekends you had to get the soup and salad. I had never heard that before. A server was walking around with earbuds in while working. The restaurant was filthy. My flip flops were stuck to the floor at one time. The floors need to be cleaned really bad. My food was burnt and the grill wasn't cleaned in between other customers. The food laid on the grill rather Han being stirred around and mixed. We had to ask for rice, because it was never offered as well as refills on our drinks. We had to wait over ten minutes for our bill become the waitress lost her card to be able to ring out customers. The manager did come over and gave each of us $5 off our next visit. Which we won't be using. He knew we weren't happy and asked if we were blowing him smoke about coming back. Once we got the bill we gave her our card immediately. She brought back he receipt to be signed and my card was there. I asked her and she went back and picked it off the floor where anyone could have picked it up. We will never come back. I think management needs to change and get rid of the bad servers. The health department also needs to pay a visit to this place.

We stopped in BD's Mongolian at 8:40 on a Saturday night, they close at 11pm... There were several tables that needed bussed and a few parties occupying most of the main dining area. We asked to be seated in the bar section and the hostess advised the bartender had gone home and that section was closed. We then asked to be seating in the upper level dining are ( which currently has 3 tables seated in that area ) but we were advised that area was closed as well and we were directed to sit between a large loud party and two dirty tables, no thanks. We left - disappointed. As I drove to PF Chang's down the road I thought to call BD's and ask for the manager. I spoke with the assistant manager Amy ( she advised the store manager was off today ) and explained my frustration. She did apologize and said she would 'take care of it' but never offered for us to come back and accommodate us eating there in any way. I hung up the phone confused and immediately began yelping this bizarre and disappointing experience.

Last time I will visit here. Me and my wife went, stood at the front for 5 mins and no one seated us. Plenty of workers walking around, but no hostess. Eventually a bartender seated us. We were starving. Took another 5-7 mins for our waitress to appear and take our order and drinks. The grill guy was giving off a lot of attitude and we never received a refill after we depleted our drinks. Me and my wife rarely get so frustrated with dining experiences, and we love Mongolian BBQ, but never here again.

This place used to be great, not so much anymore. Me and my daughter were seated a short time after we arrived on a slow night. We sat at our table for what seemed like forever (8 minutes) and were never once approached by a waiter/waitress. So we got up and left. I'd rather treat my child to a place with better service. BIG disappointment!

The food is delicious and its always a ton of fun to build bowls. What I love the most is how absolutely friendly and welcoming the staff always seems to be. This place is great and I always recommend it.

It's a cool place! I love how there staff is really friendly ... maybe? well at least the waitress and hot plate guy were nice to us! :D The nice things about this place is you get to choose your food, and basically cook it yourself ... and eat it ;) and if you're not familiar with cooking and recopies they have some good ones in the menu. The only bad thing in this place, is the food and the salad bar wasn't really clean, and they were out of beef, and when I asked the guy to get more, he didn't answer me ... the it should be!

I was here with my boyfriend. It was his idea and I wasn't hungry. So I only planned on tasting some off his bowl. Yet when the server came they charged us for 2 bowls even tho I only tastes some off his portion. Anyway we talked to the manager and he eventually took that extra bowl off our check. I'm just saying it here so everyone bewares. the food itself was decent. I highly recommended the duck, beef. And stay away from the fish, the colors look a bit funky. My boyfriend had the asian peanut sauce which was fantastic. They had a variety of sauces and spice to choose from. I also had the peanut butter mousse (I just have to get dessert, lol). I don't know if it's because I'm not in a peanut butter mood today or it just isn't what I expect for a mousse. It was pretty thick whereas when I think of a mouse, it should be light and silky. But it's just me may be this will click with someone else. Anyway I would say this is a nice place to visit once in a while. But as far as coming back regularly I don't see myself doing that.

I love BDs. There's always plenty of selections and I like the grilling concept. It was crowded but they worked hard to get everybody cooked at the grill. All the servers were working hard. The manager? seemed to be taking it a little easy while everyone else ran around. The service was ok but we don't come for that. We come for the food.

The service was kind of mediocre she was not very hands on especially considering we had 4 kids under the age of 3. Usually I only come here once a year typically when they mail out their birthday coupons, however I just had a family friend take me here for Mother's Day. I have two young children and they offer free bowls for children 3 and under which is AMAZING!! Where can you go and get free food anytime for your child under the age of 3. I love this and this alone will have me coming back for more. I was able to put things like duck, scallops, shrimp, and octopus in my dish while giving my son a simple just noodles, vegetables and chicken in his for free. I will definitely be coming back here again!

Beware!

The best thing I can say about this place is I tolerate it. The service is horrible, consistently the worst service from any place I've ever been to. The staff is always rude and never attentive. You can often find them clumped together talking and hanging out. Since they do so little, I'm always amazed at how dirty their uniforms are, all they do is clear tables and bring drinks and empty plates, how do they get so dirty? The cooks are always sweaty and disgusting looking. Who wants the guy making your food to look like that? Always rude, never friendly, ordering you around where to stand, put some signs up so people know where to go and stop being dicks about it. The food bar is hit or miss, sometimes it's clean, other times it appears it hasn't been cleaned or stocked for days. Some ingredients just look disgusting, like the shrimp that hasn't been deveined and appears to sorely need it. All that said, I love the food, and my kids love going there so they can make their own plates. So I tolerate the staff every few months and go there. If they would shape up the staff, I would be there every week.

Was there on a Sunday evening (28 September 2014) for a birthday dinner. If you're unfamiliar, the way it works is that you go through a buffet-style like to get raw ingredients (various meats & vegetables, sauces and spices) to put in a bowl, then you advance to the grill, where it is cooked before your eyes. There is quite a variety of stuff to choose. My daughter & I got our stuff, and then had to wait almost a half hour for it to be cooked. Other people in our party were getting seconds before we even got our first plate! The cooks at the grill were cooking food for people who were behind us before they cooked ours, then kept telling us "Oh, sorry". They also got into an argument with each other & the one who was cooking our stuff kept getting it mixed up with other peoples' food and also there was a drunk customer who was disrupting things... overall, a very bad experience. We did complain to the mgr. & my daughter & I got our meal for free. Admittedly, the place was crowded, but there was no excuse for having to wait at the grill for well over 20 minutes for our food to be cooked. The waitress we had did give us outstanding table service, and she was very nice. The food was not too bad... once we were able to sit down & eat it. Don't think I'm ever gonna go back, though.

Good selection and the quality of the food is very good. An easy test is the shrimp - does the shrimp almost have the texture of chicken breast or is it firm and almost crispy? The shrimp here is the latter. Lots of different oils, sauces, and spices to choose from and experiment with. There is only one problem with this place and it's consistent one at almost all the Mongolian BBQs. The problem is that when it's busy and/or there's a long queue at the grill, the grillers overcook the food. This is not an insignificant, anal problem on my part - the marquee ingredients - ribeye, shrimp, etc. - are all materially damaegd when over-cooked. The way I deal with this is to tell the grillers that I want mine "medium rare". That sometimes works and sometimes doesn't.

As a longtime fan of the many (and often very good) Mongolian grills in my hometown of Houston, I had been looking forward to dinner at BD's. My usual favorite chain, Genghis, isn't present in Indy (yet), and the reviews for this one looked at least partially promising. Sadly, the ones I have to agree with are the less complimentary. First, what's good: The selection of meats was top-notch, the selection of non-meat ingredients was very good, and the bowl size was generous. The restaurant was generally clean (although the floor around the ingredients bar had some predictably sticky spots) and nicely appointed, and the waitstaff was courteous and prompt. What's not so good: The sauces were not clearly labeled and not described at all, the ones that were tried by the people at my table were mediocre and weak, their application to the food on the grill failed to disperse them soon enough or widely enough to allow the food to accept them, much of the sauce apparently seared itself to the grill instead of permeating the meal, the meats and vegetables were often overdone or burnt (and usually dry), and unless the patron applied the dry spices to the bowl directly (and found a way to mix it in), the grill chefs' haphazard way of applying the contents of the sauce cups often put the entire load of a dry spice in one spot in the meal. The chefs try to be entertaining by juggling things instead of paying attention to the food, and the food suffers as a result. And, frankly, having to stand there around the grill and wait for the performance to end while seeing that my meal was being less than expertly prepared did NOT add to the appeal of the results. Much more time should be getting spent on flipping the food to get it JUST done on all sides, instead of letting it sit there and burn on the bottom until the meat is done all the way through. Overall, I've had worse at a Mongolian grill - once. I've had better nearly every time. BD's has room to improve; by adding better labeling on their sauces, getting rid of the "stand and watch it get done wrong" paradigm, doing away with the juggling that they won't need, increasing the amount of time the chefs spend actually *cooking* while decreasing the length of time the food spends on the hot surface, and coming up with some better sauces, they could move up to excellence in short order. Most of the ingredients are already present; it's the details that need the most work.

If you're a lil adventurous and would like to create your pseudo-Asian dish for cheap then this place is for you. For $10 you have a ginormous amount of food good for two people...unless of course you're hungry and haven't eaten in days.

Love this place, The prices are high however they are vegan friendly, If you take a bowl full of veggies and tofu up to the grill, I have always been asked if they would like me to use clean blades, and if they will make sure to cook it away from other foods on the grill.

The food was decent but the service was awful despite being waited on by the assistant manager! If he cant do his job, how can I expect the rest of the servers to do so?

I would probably like this place more if I'd never been to Flat Top Grill, a similar style of restaurant that does it much better. Unfortunately there are none of those in Indy, so when my friends wanted to go here I thought I would give it a chance. But it was not as awesome. The sauces were not labeled well and they did not have any mild sauces that would just bring out the flavor of the veggies. The selection of protein for vegetarians is a bit depressing (tofu, black beans, and eggs), since you pay the same price whether you add meat or not. My veggies were also undercooked and the sauce was not evenly distributed. This place is better for meat eaters, since you could just get meat if you want to. My friends thought the veggie selection (which definitely could be bigger) would be great for me, but if they are not cooked well it doesn't matter what veggies you get. One good thing: the service. Our waitress was very nice and attentive, which I really appreciated.

I stopped by this place just exploring the area and at first was pleasantly surprised to see that it was a flat top grill. I should have taken the hint to leave when there were only 8 or so other people in a room for over 50 at the peak lunch hour. This place is not allergy friendly and seeing all the crossing of common allergenic foods was disturbing. (ie: Shellfish next to other meats on the bar and peanuts loosely on the salad bar) The server seated us next to a freezing window and a table of loud people even though there were plenty of other seats. We asked to be moved and after obliging us, the server launched into taking our menus. My friend stopped the server to tell her we had never been here before and we didn't understand what the process was. The server was most unhelpful and did not explain anything and did not even know if the rice was sticky or not. She simply said she would bring out rice. She was unable to make suggestions, answer questions, or be helpful. We stared around awkwardly until we figured out what to do. The raw meat on the bar did not look appetizing at all and the vegetables were cut so big it prevented you from getting a reasonable portion. The grilling area was confusing and hard to tell where to stand. We came up to the bar and were asked to move to another spot. It was interesting to watch the person grill the food, but I was concerned when i noticed the slight mixing of each person's meal. (Food allergies!) When i got back to my seat I saw quite a few bits of food in my stir fry that I did not pick myself from the food bar. The server came to check on us, awkwardly refilled my drink, and as an afterthought asked my friend if she wanted more tea her glass was full. She then dropped off the bill with a little electronic survey which asked the most asinine questions such as "Were you asked if you would like dessert?" and "Did a staff person talk to you at the food bar?" None of the questions were in depth enough to solve any of the service/experience problems this business is clearly experiencing.

I wish I would have followed my gut and left after I walked in and saw how filthy this place was. Seriously, my feet stuck to the ground and every surface was sticky and covered with sauce. The bar where you stand to watch your food being cooked was so dirty I held my plate the whole time in lieu of setting it down. The worst part was that the manager was standing there talking to the cook the whole time (I would think that a manager could multi-task and clean while she chats, but hey what do I know). I'm giving it 2 stars instead of just 1 because our server was very friendly and the food wasn't terrible. Unfortunately, those things don't make up for a dirty restaurant for which there can be no excuse. We won't be back.

The nastiest chain restaurant that wasn't fast food I've ever been to. Unfortunately for me I didn't realize that until after I sat down & started eating. The good thing is the food is cooked to order in front of you. You also get to pick different vegetables, sauces, & seasonings. I'm far from a neat freak, but I wanted to let this place soak in bleach & clean it. You have two options...one bowl for about $10 or unlimited bowls for an additional $3. I'm not sure if it's always like this, but we had to flag our waitress down for additional bowls. At one point we put a piece of broccoli that we didn't want in one of the clean bowls & rather than swapping bowls she just removed the broccoli, & left the clean bowl as if we were going to use it.

I have to admit this place is just fun. It's fun creating your own dishes, it's fun watching the griller guys, who are often very funny, and it's fun conversation with your dining partners. (If you get boring grillers it's not nearly so fun). So what you do is choose your meat or protein cafeteria style and start filling your bowl. If you go there during busy hours you can see them sell through the meat and replacing it. Even the duck! But I wonder how long the ny strip or shrimp sits out during the day. Then you can add pasta if you wish. Next is all the veggies! I can't think of one time that I've been there and been unhappy with the quality of the veggies. Still in the cafeteria line, your next stop is the sauces. There's plenty of them to choose from, almost too many. Here's where my problem is. Only 2 of the sauces are gluten free. :( They're good about listing what's gluten free, vegan, contains soy, vegetarian, etc. The 2 sauces that are gluten free I don't care for, Lemon & Buffalo. The mini-deserts are 100% processed food but for $2 who cares? Just a enough sweetness to calm your palette and not make you feel overstuffed. Their regular deserts are so huge it's hard to believe anyone could eat one. But they do, I've seen it. I certainly would recommend this place for a large group that wants some fun added to their dining experience. It's also good if you're looking to control precisely what you're eating.

Really great food, but pretty much everything else sucks. They bring you bowls instead of keeping them by the food, so you have to ask for another, and the waiter is never around. The floors are absolutely disgusting and i had to wash my shoes when i got home. I used to love this place, but i doubt I'll keep going.

If you like places where people use the restroom then the buffet with no stop in between to wash their hands, this place is perfect (I saw this happen). And if you enjoy subsidizing meals for people who eat twice as much as you, go to BD's. I won't go again. We had a very nice server who was fast. The place has an impressive variety of ingredients to choose from when creating your bowl. The Top 40 rap was an interesting touch, though not surprising, considering most of the people eating there looked like they just got done filming their spot on the Jerry Springer Show. The guy with the sleeveless NASCAR shirt who didn't wash his hands probably wasn't a fan of the music. Beyond the service, choices (duck with curry barbecue sauce, anyone?), and polite server, the other good thing was the dessert, which was presented to us in nice, small dishes and given to us as soon as we chose (though I hope no one coughed on them when they were refused before being presented to us.)

I love stir fry but I do not recommend this place. I think the food is terribly overpriced for the portion size and the food isn't anything to write home about. Also, I waited for about 5-10 minutes for a water refill, there were only a few people in the restaurant at the time, service was slow.

I'm a huge runner, which means I need as many calories as possible. This place definitely fits the bill and blows any China Buffets out of the water. If you have a sense of humor, the guys working the grill will goof around with you and give your meal a little extra treatment. Sure, the floor is a little sticky sometimes, but I don't eat off the floor... So that seems invalid. Phenomenal food if you do it right. If you do it wrong, quit whining and try again. They even have little recipe cards if you aren't feeling adventurous. (Oh and if you have food allergies, just tell them. It's not a big deal for them to put up blocks between your food and someone else's. I've heard complaints about that, but only from people without allergies. Interesting.)

I just have to review BD's--even if it is a chain. The biggest reason being it's one of the only places we can go as a family and actually have a good time. It's difficult--if not impossible--to take three young boys out to dinner without fighting, someone under the table, someone spilling something, etc. But at BD's, the fun is in the making of your dinner. And the kids get a huge kick out of the entire experience. It's fun to pick all your ingredients and stack them in the bowl, then get your sauces ready to head to the grill. There, you get to watch the sweaty grillmasters take over ... flipping and smoking your food till it's a perfect blend of yumminess. Boy, is it hot! Did I mention the grillmasters are SWEATY? Um, yeah. Best is when they crack an egg with their long, silver flippers. Quite impressive!

I visited this place last night. I wish I had a time machine so that I would make a different decision. I have been to many Mongolian BBQ places and this was the by far the worst food I have had. First off to start with the good. The wait staff was excellent and we could not have asked for better. That was all that was good. The seasoning/sauce station here is weird. At all other Mongolian BBQ places that I have been the sauces are more basic (garlic oil, sesame oil, wine, ginger, etc.) with a couple of complex sauces there. This allows folks like me to season like I want and not with someone elses complex sauce. That was mostly what Bd's had - complex sauces. Made for a rather poor choice and there were no oils with which to season the food and make it where it would not stick to the grill. Also, at every Mongolian BBQ place I have been in the past you put the seasoning on the food but at Bd's they want it in a side dish. This combined with the fact that there are no oils on the seasoning bar means that the food sticks to the grill when they cook it and gets charred..... Because I was used to seasoning the food I did it that way. They looked at me like I was an idiot and put it on the grill. When cooked this way you have to stir the food as it goes down so that the seasoning don't go to the bottom and just cook away leaving a burnt mess under the food. The cooks were idiots and did not know this. Actually they were just teenagers with no experience cooking to speak of so they were ignorant of how to cook. My 13 year old daughter cooks better than they did. Well my food just sat there until the spices I had put on it cooked away and burnt. When they came around to stir it there was a black dirty mess under the food. I should have just thrown it away and started again - or left the joint. However they moved it aside and cleaned the grill and kept trying. I got a dish of sauce for them to add to try and salvage the food. They continued to cook and cook and cook and cook and cook and cook my food. I pointed out that it was done and to sauce it and get it off. The guy took my sauce and poured it an and then moved to another pile of food. I had to call him out and say get it off the grill. It was so overcooked the shrimp had turned into little hard rocks shaped like shrimp. The bean sprouts had cooked away to nothing and you could not tell they were there. The food was stained black from the burnt sauce. In other words it was terrible! If you like overcooked food this would be the place to go. In which case you would rate this place a 5 star. I however wish there was a ZERO star rating. I will never eat at another Bd's Mongolian BBQ and would suggest the same for you. Get a nice burger or something instead.

The wife is a big fan of this place. I wasn't crazy about it at first but it has grown on me. The whole family agrees that the rice sucks! We enjoy coming up with new mixes every visit. Fun atmosphere and the wait staff is very helpful. They made sure to help me when we stopped there the day after my surgery. They were great!

If you don't like it here, you either just have a problem with all the raw meat, or you did a bad job making your dinner. I love that you create your own meal. You can have 3 types of beef or go vegetarian. I do think that its around $13-14 per person. A little expensive when you consider what it appears like on the outside. My advice is to try as many combinations as possible. I never do the same thing here.

i don't want to compare this place to the great khans that you see at malls in cali, because this place is much, much better than a chain restaurant, but the same concept. pile a bunch of food-meats, veggies, sauces--into a bowl and watch the cooks flip and chop up (with ginormous chopsticks) your picks on a large round grill. the salad bar looked great, but i started with the main course and was too full to eat anything else. there's a lot of meats, veggies sauces and spices to choose from. i don't eat meat (for now.. i kind of miss meat.. tasty, tasty meat... hehe) and they were very accommodating. they scrubbed clean a section of the grill and placed dividers so that other people's food wouldn't touch mine... or as my bf said "the evil meat juices." i didn't get a chance to have dessert, we were all enjoying the great company, food and the drinks. oh yes, there's a full service bar in the back of the restaurant.

Overfreakin'priced. VERY overpriced. I'd never been to BD's and every time I'm in the B&N next door BD's is PACKED. This afternoon I convinced my husband to finally go (he'd been before it had been awhile). My overall impression was that it was pretty "meh". The bowl for your food is on the small side and cost for that one fill up is waaaay overpriced. there are a couple other restaurants that do the same in Indy but at a better rate. Definitely will go there next time.

Great restaurant that allows you to make your own meal with meats, veggies, and spices. They cook it up for you and you shovel in the food. Very tasty! I always overeat here and never regret it. I get my money's worth every single time. My husband and I love this place and try to go whenever we come back to visit Indy.

My fiance and I have been here several times and always had a good experience but not this past week. The carmel location has just shut down and apparently a bunch of staff from there now works at the Indy location. On arrival, the hostesses looked really depressed and were not friendly at all. They didn't even say hi or ask how many. They've changed their menu to include appetizers that don't really fit with the theme of the place and have added burgers and brats to the buffet for dinner which to me just doesn't make sense at all. In return, they've reduced what they have on the buffet as far as fresh veggies and meats. The grillers are usually so full of life and fun. Granted it was a Sunday and slow, but the grillers we had were completely boring, socialized with eachother the entire time, and didn't really acknowledge the guests at all. Watching the grillers at this place is half the fun, but not anymore. The bathroom was also a pigsty and stunk. I was absolutely not impressed. Even another woman in front of my at the buffet line kept saying where's this and where is that. She clearly noticed too that things had changed and not for the better. Once man said there are no onions on the buffet and the grillers said they didn't have them anymore. I just don't get it. BD's what happend?

Meh.

A friend of mine wanted to try Mongolian BBQ. So why not give this place a try? At first glance, there were a lot of people so I assumed this place was a great decision. Boy, were we wrong. Mongolian BBQ basically forces you to pick your items from a buffet style setting and then hand that to a cook to stir fry the food for you. The meat quality was mediocre. There was a large selection of that and sauces as well. I packed my bowl pretty well and I figured I was going to take some home for a snack later. As I hadned my food to the cook and waited for him to do what he needed to do, I ended up with about 50% of what I had chosen. Not only did the food taste bland but there was a lof of cross contamination from other foods due to the same utensils used to cook the food. I ordered Fried rice off the menu and that was bland as well. The rice was overcooked and mushy. The food was not worth the price. For the 4 of us, it was a $90 bill including 2 beers and 2 sodas. I have never been so disappointed in my life and I was actually upset when I left. I just wouldn't recommend this. Go to the mall instead.

There are very few times that I would become so frustrated with the horrible service of a place that I become furious and vow to NEVER return to a restaurant. This past Saturday was one of those occasions. I'll start off by saying that the only people who do any kind of labor around this place are the cooks and the guy that was changing the salad bar stuff out. My mother in law, my two children and I decided to eat here around 3 pm this past Saturday before doing some shopping. First, it took us about 15 mins to be seated while there were plenty of open tables in the restaurant. Then it takes another 15 mins for our server to come. He apologizes and says they're slammed and that it's only his second day on the job. I worked as a server for 7 years, honey...you having 3 tables does not make you "slammed." He was completely unprepared to be serving on his own, I blame that on the lack of proper management. We ordered the unlimited plates for my MIL and I, and the kids mini corn dogs for my daughter. My MIL went and got her salad, and then I got mine. We both finished our salads before our drinks came out. Fountain drinks. Not beer, not wine, not a mixed drink. A diet coke and an orange soda. He must've needed to figure out how to hold the cups under the spout. This is already long as it is, so I will wrap this up with saying that after my MIL and I finished eating our main course (without the rice because the server also never brought that) my daughters corn dogs were STILL NOT OUT an hour and a half after putting in her order. The server had forgot to put her order in, but blamed the kitchen. I know this because 15 mins before her plate came out, he comes by and says "what did she order again?" The check process? My MIL ended up having to walk back to the kitchen to find someone to take our card. And when she walked back there, found 15 servers standing in the kitchen talking and on their phones. Then it takes another 20 mins for our cards to be run and returned to us. This place is full of lazy incompetent servers who congregate around the hostess stand or in the kitchen while almost every table in the restaurant is twisting their necks trying to find a server because they need something. Way to take a concept that is supposed to be a positive experience and turn it into the worst dining experience we have ever had. I applaud you all.

Kelly R. and I went on a Sunday and managed to miss the church-crowd, which is always a plus! You could tell there had been a herd of people before us because the food needed to be freshened up, but once that happened it was much better. This is definitely a chain restaurant so it will be like the other BD's where you pick your own ingredients.

Went for dinner tonight and found the cook at the grill very rude. After pouring another customers sauce on my daughters food he arguing with me that he hadn't done it. After continuing to argue I made my daughter a new bowl. Then asked am I sure that I have the right sauce this time. That he didn't want any arguments. (I had the right sauce the first time. He's the one who took someone else's! Never apologized or anything.

I want to start this review off by saying that I've been a server for 4 years. My girlfriends parents took us out and a few others for a total of 9. Now its in a good location so one of the points I docked off was for the 10 minute wait before we were even acknowledged. After that it took an additional 15 minutes to get a table set up for us. I honestly can't figure out why that happened as it was about 3 o clock when we got here. Another point I docked off was after we got sat it took us about another 10-12 minutes to even have our server come over. When our server came it got better she was very nice and explained everything and was just good. I did look over at the door a few times and people that came in were seated within the first minute they walked in the door. The food was the only reason why I gave 3 stars. Period. Maybe next time I come in I'll just take my girlfriend but no more then a party of 4 if I want good service. Sorry staff except for the cooks.

Do yourself a favor and visit this restaurant at least once in your life. It's very affordable and the options are endless! I do feel the salad bar could use an upgrade on the options. However, the unlimited bowls is the way to go! Yum yum yum! I wish there were more of these located around Indy!

This place is great! You can't complain about the food, because it is as good as YOU make it.. and if you get the right stuff with the right sauce, it will be amazing. Last time I came with some friends and there was a misunderstanding we had about the price, and the manager came and talked to us and took care of it quickly and professionally! Amazing service, and the cooks at the stove-top are funny and friendly as well.

This was thoroughly disappointing. We love the Mongolian BBQ format, Bd's needs to work on it a bit. All the pieces are in place, but the results were sub-par. We received out bowl to take up to the bar and fill with ingredients. Many of the veggies were empty, but we found enough to fill the bowl. Taking then ingredients to the grill to be cooked is usually the centerpiece of the experience here. All this turned out to be were guys trying to showy with their food swords. Dropping them almost every time and catching them on the wrong end with their bare hands half the time was not fun to watch, so I ventured over to the salad and soup bar. Again, 2 or 3 veggies were empty, but I managed a salad. Hint, take a knife, since the lettuce is not any smaller than big leaves off the head. I tried both soups and didn't finish either. Both were bland and not enjoyable. Getting back to my food cooking, I found that what the guys were doing was more chopping my ingredients into baby food, while the noodles and egg I added were burned away to nothing. My wife's plate was the same way. Ready to try the dish, we found that the chicken and the rib eye were cooked to a well done toughness. I'm not sure how long is long enough on these hot grills, but ours were on past the correct time. We each ate only the one bowl, sine we were not excited to pay for the unlimited trips. There really wasn't anything we could do different to make the next dish better, since it all hinges on the skills of the swordsmen. I don't want to say our waiter was creepy, but I think that's the only word to describe it. Every time he came to say something, pick up a plate or refill drinks, we would stop and stare at me as if waiting for something more than the Thank You I offered. Uncomfortable. Then the bill came. We were charged for unlimited trips anyway, since we each got salads. We didn't realize that this was the rule at Bd's. An explanation of the process would have helped, since we told the waiter we had never been there. All in all, the only word I can come up with is disappointing. We'll stick with HuHot or Stir Crazy.

I agree with Greg R ' s assessment. We were not greeted when we walked in the door, despite there being 2 people at the hostess stand. We were seated for 5 minutes before anyone acknowledged us, despite a server standing next to our table watching TV. The salad bar was empty and the grill team was not at all on their game. Won't be coming back.

I worked as a server for 7 years, honey...you having 3 tables does not make you "slammed." He must've needed to figure out how to hold the cups under the spout.

This place is great! You can't complain about the food, because it is as good as YOU make it.. and if you get the right stuff with the right sauce, it will be amazing. Last time I came with some friends and there was a misunderstanding we had about the price, and the manager came and talked to us and took care of it quickly and professionally! Amazing service, and the cooks at the stove-top are funny and friendly as well.

Horrible experience. Was there for 2 1/3 hours because there was no service. Wet sticky floors, toilet overflowed in the bathroom. Terrible. Do not go here.

Do yourself a favor and visit this restaurant at least once in your life. It's very affordable and the options are endless! I do feel the salad bar could use an upgrade on the options. However, the unlimited bowls is the way to go! Yum yum yum! I wish there were more of these located around Indy!

A very good place to have a filling dinner !! U have a good choice of combination to make a complete dinner. The host was very friendly and helped us with everything. If a student., one can take a good deal on Monday night for a fulfilling dinner @ $9.99.

Great selection available. Room up at the grill to watch them cook. Nice open seating isn't too loud to hear people at your table.

I love BDs. There's always plenty of selections and I like the grilling concept. It was crowded but they worked hard to get everybody cooked at the grill. All the servers were working hard. The manager? seemed to be taking it a little easy while everyone else ran around. The service was ok but we don't come for that. We come for the food.
