I like the food, especially their sea bass and hot-out-of-the-oven complimentary rolls. I think all of their soups are delicious, and I love that I don't have to choose between soup OR salad, because they will give you BOTH with any entree! Yay! You will also find some tasty and unique ice cream flavors, which also comes with the entree, unless you opt for the rice pudding instead, which I am sure is delicious too. Another good thing is that tax is only about 7% here in Hammond, as opposed to the 11% in Chicago. The only problem I have with this restaurant is that every time I am dining here, which has been a total of 4 times, I feel EXTREMELY uncomfortable being here. It's not just the waitresses looking at me in a weird way, but it's ALL of the other diners in the restaurant. I'm from the city of Chicago, where there are diverse groups of people everywhere. I am not sure if this is also the case in Hammond, Indiana, and I am not sure what kind of mindset people here have towards people who appear differently than them. The experience I've gotten here every single time is that, basically, if you are not Caucasian, you can expect to be stared at like you're a blue alien from outer space or an exotic animal at the zoo, from the very moment you walk in until the moment you leave. Other diners will analyze your every action and gesture like "Ohhh, so THAT'S how they eat. Ohhh, THAT'S how they talk. Ohhh, THAT'S how they behave." One time I got so fed up with a man staring at me nonstop that I was so tempted to go up to him in the middle of my meal and say "What are YOU looking at?" Imagine feeling that way during your entire meal.

I've been going to this place for years, and have taken many people here as well. Even so, each time I go, the owners and the manager act as if they've never seen me before. If it wasn't for the nice waitresses, I wouldn't even bother going here. The food it okay... but their breakfast is the best here... other meals are so-so. A friend of mine had the stir-fry one time and the vegetables were like HUGE... like something out of that Gilligan's Island radioactive vegetables episode! And, a very odd assortment for a stir-fry. I will say that their burgers are really good, and their skirt steak is usually pretty good. Soups are okay, but are served luke-warm, so not worth it. Their bread is fresh-baked, but doughy in the middle. The thing that this place has that many other similar restaurants in the area do not have is a very nice ambiance... they recently remodeled the inside and it is much nicer. They also always have fresh flowers on the tables -- a VERY nice touch. They do a nice job with having hanging flower baskets outside. They're just not very friendly is all. And, one time after one of the brothers asked how everything was when I was paying, I told him the skirt steak was a little tough this time. He was very defensive, saying how they sell a lot of them (I know... I buy a lot of them!)... he couldn't wait to give me my change and get me on my way. f you don't like something and try to tell them about it and why it wasn't that good, they get VERY defensive, so don't bother trying help by giving them any constructive feedback.

A new low in customer service. We met some people there to day. Out of five people we all had coffee, three had food (with an extra $1 charge for sharing a plate). When we were nearly done the manager came over and asked us to stop meeting there - even though it was the first time we'd been there. Frankly this is the worst treatment I've gotten in a restaurant in a very long time. After reading the other reviews I can see we were not the only ones. I will never go back - the food is only basic Greek anyways.

Living in Chicago now, I miss the Wheel and the Lemon Rice soup sooo bad. The dinner specials are great, and their breakfasts are amazing. They make the best burgers too- seriously all of them are good- you can't go wrong. My favorite dinner meal is their chicken kiev dinner special, it's like a stuffed chicken tenderloin, sooo delicious! (Plus, it comes with lemon rice soup and dessert!) This place has definitely improved over the years. There used to be a you have to order something rule due to it being the #1 lunch spot for the high school around the corner, and a bunch of teenagers coming in with friends but not eating. They don't force that anymore after Gavit closed their campus, but there is a plate sharing fee (only $1, don't see a problem with that.) To the people who saw bugs- you should have told the management. I've been coming here for 15+ years, and it's always been very clean (even though it still has a smoking section, the ONLY reason it isn't getting 5 stars). This place isn't fancy, it's for when you want good food but don't want to go all the way to Schererville to go eat. It's sad that more fans aren't posting about the good food, because it's definitely better than these complaints make it seem!!

I've eaten here off and on since I moved to NWI in 2009, and I've always been satisfied. I love their onion rings, and their burgers are great! The service has sometimes been a bit slow, but that was also when the restaurant was packed. Having been a waitress in the past, I can relate and it's just impossible to be too speedy when you have a load of tables to yourself. I can't say I have anything bad to say about this place, I would recommend it!

I've been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years, & out of all the places that I've had Lemon Rice Soup, this place has the best in my opinion. The flavor is just right, & I tend to like thick soups. My usual meals are lunch & dinner, where I'll select most of the time, the Roast Tom Turkey, or the Chicken Parmigiana with Mostacciolli.. Portion sizes are good, but they have cut back in recent years. Lunch time, it's soup or salad, while dinner is both. I have also ordered the Chicken Malibu Sandwich & the Turkey Burger, & those for me have always been hot, & the fries so hot, that I have to wait for them to cool off, before I can eat it. this is just me, but I'm not totally sure how Pasta Al Pomadoro supposed to be, but based on the way it looked & the sauce tasted, it seemed more like traditional spaghetti with cut up chicken in it. I wasn't impressed for $10.95, as the Chicken Parmigiana offered more chicken, along with pasta noodles (whether you choose mostaccioli noodles). So that's one item I won't order again. I don't go there for breakfast often, but they do have good pancakes, waffles, & eggs over easy (my preference) with bacon, toast, & hash browns. As for seating, they have accommodated a table for my mom when I go with her there. If I'm by myself, or someone who doesn't have seating issues, then I'll get a booth. As someone else posted on here, you either love it, or hate it at this restaurant, & I love it. I hope this place stays open for many more years, as it's going on 60 years now.

Big portions, good food, decent prices. Its busy so don't hope for super fast service.

We prefer to carry out here but it's not so bad to sit in and dine also. It sure is nice to get good food and quick when ordering carry out. Breakfast skillets + crepes for breakfast are super tasty. Dinner dishes are pretty decent however, some dishes are hit or miss. This is a typical diner with lots of choices.. The Cobb salad is great, ranch dressing here is the best and you get rolls to boot!

I was only in town for work for one day. Had some extra time before starting so we decided to eat at a sit-down restaurant instead of fast food. Frankly, the fast food might have been better. I got the gyro and it sat in my stomach the rest of the night. Two people got fish and it was quite greasy. You could tell it had been frozen. It wouldn't surprise me if they had bought a box of Gorton's from the Food4Less down the street. The french fries were cold and hard. Salt and ketchup did nothing to salvage them. The service was horrible. It took the waitress a good 10 minutes just to get drink orders. We took a while looking at the menus, so it did take 10-15 minutes after that to place our order, but that was more our fault since we were talking, so we won't hold that against them. But after the order was placed and the food was brought out, our waitress pretty much disappeared. Not once did she ask how our food was, if we needed anything or come to refill our drinks. I had to grab a bottle of ketchup from a neighboring table. Then as we were leaving, the waitress visibly wondered why no one was leaving any tips. Guy at the cash register up front, who I'm assuming was the owner, was not very friendly. He didn't ask how the meal was. Just simply took the money and made change.

I am beyond shocked to see a low rating.. I've been going to the wheel since I could walk.. This is my first stop every time I visit home. They have crisp-cooked zucchini sticks in panko breadcrumbs. Fresh green salads with a to-die-for home made ranch dressing. The gyros aren't pressed meat slices, they are carved thick from the rotisserie like they should be. The tatziki is home made and makes my taste-buds sing. Their pies and puddings are home made and so fresh and delicious. And if you're a fan try their lemon rice and French onion because they are killer. The waitresses are sweet and never mess up my orders, and the food is fast, fresh, and delicious. I wish yelp let me give 10 stars! More restaurants need to take lead from the wheel.

I've eaten here off and on over the years and have always been satisfied. The fried mushroom appetizers are beyond delicious and unhealthy, but totally worth it. Burgers, fried fish, etc., everything seems to come out hot and tasty. It is your typical get everything kind of diner and they do a good job at it.

Do not go here with your children! They are not at all accommodating. I won't be coming back. They wanted me to place my small child who was sleeping in a car seat in the busy walk way. There were definitely other places we could have sat that would have been more convenient for our party but they refused to give us the table on the basis that "IF" they get busy that table would be reserved for a larger party of 6. (While I was there they gave it to a party of 4 and other similar tables to parties of 3, exactly like us! The entire back room that could accommodate upwards of 30 people stayed practically empty)

This is a Region Restaurant at its finest! First of all the place is clean, the bathrooms are super clean, glasses and silverware clean! The food is traditional Midwest food; beef, pork, chicken. Salads are built for two, a great place for a family, for the worker to have lunch... The staff is friendly and professional...speedy and polite And if their is a problem they are quick to fix As soon as you walk in you see the wide variety of beautiful deserts displayed in a glass case. Parking is great too Love this place... Well done staff!

I was between 1-2 stars, but don't think I would ever return. I felt like Melanie A. I felt uncomfortable once I sat down. The waitress seemed like she kept staring at me. Also, there was an older lady eating and it felt like she kept looking in my direction. Food wasn't good. My guy got the Monday Corned Beef Special. I got the Shrimp and Chips. I got the Lemon Rice Soup and didn't like it. It was thick and not good. Shrimp and Chips, I thought was shrimp with fish chips, but it's only shrimp. Can't really mess on on the fried shrimps. Fries were meh. My guys meal came with dessert and we opted for bread pudding and it was the end piece and it was burnt on top. We brought it back and my brother said it wasn't good. Dry. I decided to get a tiramisu to go too. It was dry and tasted old. AVOID!

Happened to pass through during lunch. Don't live in the area but my next job site was nearby. Didn't even read a single yelper review prior to entering this friendly looking little place. Went in blind, walked out full and happy with really good homemade, not too buttery or salty food for under $10. Been trying to eat somewhat healthier lately so opted for a seafood dish. The asian sea bass looked like it might be interesting. Came with a salad, soup, choice of potato, and a desert choice. The fish was very fresh and tasty. Tasted like something from a expensive restaurant. I would definitely go back again!

No, this isn't a 5 star restaurant, but I felt a lot of the reviews here were unfair. Someone complained that the lemon rice soup was "thick." Seriously?! Anyway, if you're in the region, you know how many restaurants are like The Wheel. Typical greek place. The thing is, The Wheel really does do a lot of things much better than other places. They have an enormous menu, and their dinner entrees (pasta, breaded veal cutlet, stuff like that) are a STEAL for under $10. And the free-with-dinner dessert options are better than you'd get elsewhere. Bread pudding? Don't mind if I do. The restaurant is always busy and bustling, yet it always feels clean. Gotta love the rotating palm fans in the main dining room, too. Classy.

For lunch, usually I am a soup and salad guy and a bowl of lemon rice soup and a Greek salad is absolutely perfect at The Wheel, especially on a cold and rainy day.

If you are a local, you seem to either really love The Wheel or really hate the Wheel, but there is not an in between. While things seemed to be headed in a downward direction, after the fire, things definitely seem like they have returned on an upward curve. You definitely don't go to the Wheel for the friendliness of the wait staff or owners... while some of the waitresses are so sweet, others are rude and just want you to hurry along. But you definitely do go to the Wheel for the breakfast. The Melting Pot skillet is DIVINE. It's full of meat (bacon, sausage, ham) and flavor. Pair it with some delicious pancakes and you leave feeling stuffed for a reasonable price. Their breakfast burrito with chorizo was also divine. Their soups are always a winner. Lemon Rice is a classic, but their potato (on Tuesdays) is to die for and their Cream of Broccoli is perfection on a spoon.

Food is not good. Lemon rice soup and chicken noodle soup is terrible. The owner is rude. He was upset that he had to refund a "whole" $8 for a meal we sent back. Also overcharged for other items. Terrible food. Terrible service. The owner stated "The next time you come back, you wont be able to return your food if you don't like it". We replied we probably wont return. "Good" the owner replied. Even the owner had terrible customer service, in addition to the terrible food.

We've been going to this place off and on for 20 + years. The quality of everything has just continued on this downward spiral. Today our waitress barely spoke English, she was very hard to understand. We each ordered a coffee, it was horrible, this was never a problem in the past. We asked the waitress if we could have a fresh cup, thinking maybe it had just sat too long or something. She offered us hot water to water it down? Really who does that? Getting a new cup was not happening apparently. So instead I just left my coffee on the edge of the table. Our breakfast comes, I had their special, eggs, pancakes and bacon. Hubby had a Mexican fritata. Normally both are very good, and while I have no problem with the taste of my food, it was literally ice cold. The bacon had gotten rubbery from being cold and the pancakes were so cold the butter wouldn't melt. My hubby's fritata was so greasy, when it put it on the tortilla the orange grease from the chirizo just ran down his arm and all over the plate. He's ordered this before, it's usually his breakfast staple, but this was just horrible. When our food was brought to the table it was the only time we saw the waitress until she brought the check at the end. I finished my glass of water 1/2 way through the meal and my hubby drank down his nasty coffee before the meal even arrived at the table, and neither was ever refilled. I looked at the check , and we were still charged for both the coffees so I asked the manager to remove mine, it was clear I didn't drink it and I told him it was just terrible. The manager tells me there must be something wrong with me because they have very good coffee and I was the only one complaining. Really?????? I wasn't asking him to remove even my husbands just mine and I get told there's something wrong with me? He was rude and even though they removed it finally I will not be going back there simply from his treatment. I have never left a place so angry and frustrated in my life. It's sort of sad but I feel like we just can't go back here again, we will have to find a new place for breakfast.

Granted, I haven't been here since, maybe, 2000, but I remember thinking it wasn't that great of a place anyway. Then they have some stupid rule about having to order food if you're going to stay in there or something like that. It's like "Umm...ok. Why are they forcing us to eat?" So sorry to ruin your image cause people are sitting and talking among themselves! Sheesh. I do remember liking their breakfast though.

Had dinner there on 7-9-12 for a late dinner 10pm. Ordered the Broiled Lake Perch...when they brought it to the table I could already see they over cook the S&*t out of it. I took a bite to give it a chance, not only was it over cooked you could taste the fish was bad. I told the waitress, she said she could do "Nothing" it was the managers call. When asked if I wanted anything else I decided the salad& soup was fine...The bill came and the manager brook everything down I ate individually and it added up to more the the ORIGINAL MEAL! Really...I asked the waitress to see the menu, to see what soup & salad cost, with a side...3 bucks cheaper. The guy running this place, tall curly hair, glasses, was a real piece of work. The poor waitress who did a great job had to go back to this jerk, again, to let him know her clients are not stupid. I have eaten here plenty of times, the food is a greasy spoon and when drunk you don't care but when wide awake you see some of the food is low grade dog food. Save your money, drive further south down the street...the service is much better.

My friends and I have been coming here since we were in middle school (10 years...geesh!). This was the spot to hang out after football games. What keeps us coming back is the Lemon Rice soup. Theirs is the best in the region. The food here is pretty good/decent and portions are large. The only thing that disappoints me is whenever i order the Eggplant Parmigiana, I always ask for the eggplant to be made extra crispy and they never do it. That's okay though because there are so many other entrees to get on their menu!

We were in Chesterton and wanted a bite, but didn't really trust anything in the area, When we arrived at 1 on a Sunday, it was crowded. The first thing that I noticed was the wall of smoke at the front door. The lady asked if I wanted smoking or non? Really! Unless you are seating me in another building, there is no difference. As we waited for a table the chain smokers made me realize, I should have driven another 5 minutes to Illinois. We were seated at the furthest table in the corner of the building. No smokey smell. Because there was cold air coming out of the vent next to the window. Great, it's warmer outside than in. The waitress was pleasent and our food came pretty quick. I had the melting pot skillet. Delish! It had ham, bacon, sausage, onions, mushrooms and melted, blended cheese with 3 over easy on top. The food was worth the wait, but not the smoke. This made me realize that I will not eat in restaurant that has smokers chugging away like a freight train. Indiana needs to figure it out. Health before taxes.

This place is your typical diner with your typical breakfast, lunch and dinner. Yes,I have breakfast here almost every morning, typically cause I enjoy there atmosphere. It's very nice and calm, the waitresses are very nice and down to earth also helpful. They have an amazing variety of stuff french toast and there skillets are on point also decent coffee. I've been coming here for breakfast quite some time and I have always enjoyed my breakfast here. Everyone who works at this establishment is very polite except for the weirdo jerk-off manager, he sucks at life. Breakfast here for me has never been disappointing.

The lemon rice food has so much flour you can eat it with a fork and has been reheated so many times! It's full of homeless people and drunks drinking coffee! The last straw was when I was waiting for a table and my sis was a foot away drying her hands in the bathroom, the greasy owner called to seat me and I said wait a sec. He scoffed and gave the next in line our table. The hostess followed us out and begged us to stay. I never went back I and I used to go there 30 times a year. I tell everyone I know and we go elsewhere...round the clock, commander, the riveria, jedis

I stopped here for dinner on my way to Chicago. I ordered the tilapia grilled in lemon butter the tilapia had a bad fishy taste and I asked the waitress if I could exchange it for something else .she came back and said the manager refused to exchange it because tilapia is one of the fish that doesn't have a fishy taste . Ive eaten tilapia many times . It is one of my favorite fish but this one had a foul taste. On my way out when I went to pay I spoke with the manager directly. I told him I was unable to eat the tilapia and again asked if I could exchange it for something else. He told me no because tilapia doesn't have a fish taste. It old him to try mine and he said he was going go order it for himself. I have never been in a restaurant where the manager has refused to exchange an unsatisfactory meal for something more satisfactory. I wouldn't eat here again

I used to pretty much live here when I was in my late teens, until one day I went there with the usual group of people, and one of us didn't feel like eating. They made this huge deal about the person not eating and said we need to leave if one person wasn't going to eat with the rest of us, and I've maybe been back about 5 times since then. We all felt that rule was absurd especially since the rest of us were pigging out, and we were always in there on a regular basis. It's not like we never tipped either. The food is decent. I like their Spanikopita, it's awesome. So is the flaming cheese. Their coffee's pretty good. They're open kind of late, but it's just not one of my top picks anymore for coffee restaurants in the area. Actually, I remember them having great Lemon Rice Soup too.

Finding a place that gives a good amount of food at an affordable price is a priority for any teen. The obvious choice would be fast food. But when the occasion calls for a sit-down meal event, a place like The Wheel in Hammond, IN is the way to go. At first glance, The Wheel may seem like your typical old-style diner, but it is much more than that. Its aged furniture and antique chandeliers give a nostalgic feel to the old restaurant. The service is apt and courteous. But anyone will tell you that if there is one thing people come to The Wheel for, it's the soup. The Wheel arguably has the best lemon rice soup that the region has to offer. The restaurant also provides freshly baked rolls to maximize your soup experience. The Wheel is a great place to have a casual conversation or to have a midnight feast. Go for the good times and stay for the soup at The Wheel.

Full disclosure, I do (kind of) know one of the owners. That said, a company I was training with brings the trainees here to eat, and that had nothing to do with me. The food here is good, the lemon rice soup is excellent and the prices are really good considering the portions you get.

Decent coffee. Good food. The Wheel is a typical diner with all the fixin's you expect from a place that looks like a Round-the-Clock. The skillets are pretty legit. So are tne pancakes. People are always friendly.

The strangest restaurant I have ever been to. If you go I am warning you-- never order the lemon chicken soup. Hands down the worst tasting soup I've ever ordered. You'll be wasting your money if you disregard my advice. I did not find it attractive or satisfying. I would only go back if there was a problem with my car nearby and it was the only place around open for food.
