I tend to enjoy places that don't care about your assumptions or expectations. As people have said before, the outside of this restaurant would have you double guessing why you came. However, the inside of the restaurant is what I would call cozy and friendly. I had the rack of lamb, expensive, wasn't trimmed, but the taste was delicious and it was cooked to perfection. Also had the arabian salad, at first it wasn't that exciting, but with the green pepper in it I could not eat enough. Overall it was a great expierence, maybe a tad pricey but overall I left pleased. It is defintely an original restaurant.

This place is pretty good, but I'm not sure why everyone is raving about it. The steak was delicious the first bite, but it was not evenly cooked, so half was medium and the other half was rare. The salad and bread (I.e. tortilla) was underwhelming and so were the sides.

Wonderful place with friendly staff and plenty of history. I didn't know I needed cash but they let me eat and go get cash. Awesome place

I had the cabbage rolls here. Tasted great and very friendly service. Coworkers had filets that looked delicious. I will be back!

The steak was large and delicious. For real. I also the the decor was a very pleasant Christmas theme (which is year round), and the staff was perfect. the only strike on it is that the sides and salads were limited, and were nothing special.

Just a quick note say the steaks and salad were among the best I have had in a very long time. We were not disappointed. A great place to enjoy a very satisfying meal with good friends. The taste was wonderful.

My wife and I went there for the first time - to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The place is it a sketchy part of town, so she thought it was a joke when we arrived (especially because of the Santas out front). However, once we got past the decor, and actually embraced it for its uniqueness, we ABSOLUTELY enjoyed the experience. The Arabian salad and warm flat bread were delicious. I had the small filet, and I commented that it was one of the best steaks I've ever had. She loved the Arabian chicken dish she ordered. They still don't take credit cards, so take cash or checks. It was a fantastic experience!

A welcome sight whenever we come to Evansville is the plastic Santa Claus on top of the House of Como. Be sure to order the Arabian salad with the buttered Flatbread. Not to be missed.

This place is the best restaurant in all of Evansville. We look forward to going and are never disappointed! The steak is amazing

One of those classic places you have to go to. Bring lots of cash!

Ohhh my. So, this is one of those places that you go with a lot of people when you have a lot of time on your hands. It's not dinner-- it's an experience. Don't expect to spend less than 2 or 3 hours here since service is slow but memorable. The waitresses are a hoot and they might just tell you what you'll be ordering if you don't order correctly (that means that you absolutely must order the salad, bread and hummus). The decor is either kitchy or creepy, depending on your perspective and how much humor you're bringing with you. The singing frogs on top of the juke box are only overshadowed by the spinning, light-up plastic platter that they bring out if it's your birthday. Sooo cool. Anyway, go with friends, relax and people-watch. The characters who come here are just as fun as the decor. Bonus: you can bring your own bottles of wine.

I haven't been to House of Como in more than 20 years, but I am SO glad to know that A) it's still open, B) the decor hasn't changed a bit, and C) the food is as good as ever! When we lived in Evansville in the early 80s, we loved this place - the lamb kibi was the best (I don't know if they still serve raw meat given all of our paranoia these days). I was eating Arabic food in Houston the other day, and I was telling our friends about my first experience with Arabic food in Evansville, IN of all places!

I cannot wait to return to House of Como. It's that dying breed, an ideosyncratic, delicious, quirky, venerable establishment. Go there. Make friends. Come back and bring others. Long live House of Como.

We decided to come here for wedding anniversary. The atmosphere seems to transport you back in time. The service was great, and the food was to. I had the NY Strip, and my wife had the cabbage rolls. I had heard this place had the best steak in Evansville, and I now have to agree with that. Don't let the outside of the place fool you. Highly recommended!

7-2-11: HoC remains closed due to a kitchen fire. And now they are bringing the building up to code. So it may be awhile before this ONE-OF-a-KIND place opens up again Bummer! I hope they don't have to remove all the christmas decorations.

I love the atmosphere of the House of Como, it definitely adds to the dining experience. Don't let the neighborhood or the plastic santa on top of the building scare you off! The servers are very friendly, and the food is good. The Arabian Salad with warm bread is the best part of the meal in my opinon. I ordered the spaghetti last time, and it was a little sweet for my taste, but I tried someone's ravioli, and the sweetness of the marinara was less noticible on that dish. The prices are a little high, and they don't accept credit cards, hence my 3-star rating...

My wife and I went to House of Como last weekend after a recommendation from a co-worker. I had the rack of lamb and my wife had their signature Djage chicken dish. The waitress charged me $45 for the full rack of lamb!!! In comparison, the New Zealand full rack of lamb at Cavanaugh's steak house is only $33 so we definitely got ripped off!! The lamb was overcooked and my wife's chicken dish was dry...it was definitely not fresh. Don't think we will be back...over-priced and over-hyped.

First of all they don't take credit card! (At least a year ago they didn't) However, this is one restaurant where it doesn't matter. The food is excellent. Always, always get a salad with warm bread. Honestly, the waitresses always make great recommendations. The menu is very small, which is always a good sign because they know how to specialize. The pork chops are some of the best I've ever had. The atmosphere is also very good for a date or family meal. I wouldn't recommend taking children though. My only complaint is the wine list is short.

I cannot believe that no one in Evansville has reviewed the notorious House of Como! This place is one of the last few restaurants with character in the city! I mean come on, people! When you walk into this little nondescript concrete building, one of the first things you notice are the Christmas decorations. Yes, that's right - it does not matter what time of year you go, the decorations are up. Now, for some, this would indicate that the restaurant has a theme of some sort, but no. It seems as if someone in 1964 decided that it was too much work to take them down, and so up they stayed. The christmas theme is especially strange when you consider that the food is this really wonderful blend of Greek, Arabian, and Mediterranean. But the food here is one of the few things (and there really are only a few things) that makes me want to go to Evansville. The flat bread and lamb are especially good. So here is the setup - you go in, feel like you are stepping back in time, sit down among the greasy tinsel garland, old light-up santas, and ornaments stained with fingertips and cigarette smoke from the past 45 years, you order your lamb, and then listen to "White Christmas" by Bing Crosby play on a RECORD PLAYER. The effect is sublime and surreal. You feel like you may be a bit player in "Goodfella's were it directed by David Lynch on LSD. And really, there is nothing more interesting than David Lynch on LSD while you butter your 36" round flat-bread hot from the oven. If you are in Evansville, or driving south on Highway 41 right before you get to the KY border, you have to go here. The service is excellent and the atmosphere can't be duplicated anywhere else - you can keep going to Turoni's, Fox & Hound, and Hacienda - OR - you can live your life on the edge and try something different - something you can get no where else IN THE WORLD. You will be very, very happy that you did.

This can be a lot of fun for a couple or group of friends. It can get rather expensive though. I love the NY strip.

The steaks are what keep this place in business. They are top-notch, but don't ask them to butterfly your filet because they won't. The service is rather slow, and the decor is like a garage sale exploded with Christmas kitsch from the 50's & 60's. Not my favorite place, but my husband loves it because of the giant steaks.

My absolute favorite restaurant in Evansville. Where else in town will they "Bill You" for dinner if you are a regular? If you aren't a regular, bring cash and tip well. The better you tip the better your experience will be coming back. The food is awesome. My favorites? Djade chicken. Kabobs.

Do not let the appearance of the building, or the location, keep you from going. My wife and I LOVE this restaurant. The Arabian Salad is not to be missed. The steak, imo, is better than Ruths Chris. Bring cash as they do not accept credit cards. Great special occasion restaurant.

... ok, so I've had to stew on this for 24 hours before commenting on my 'House of Como' meal. Wow... great food, it did not fail on the promise to have a 'unique' dining experience. Which may be why I liked it so much. I think I would've just as well off saying we're here to eat... since they were going to bring us what they wanted to anyways. In a restaurant with food THAT good though, why concern yourselves with being pretentious or going with the flow. They did not appear to hurt for business, the staff was polite. I actually felt nostalgic for the times at Grandma's when I was a kid and there was 70 years of toys and trinkets aging in a spare room that was used for entertaining once a year at Chrismas. Only instead of having holiday staple food, eating from a five star steak-italian-arabic-greek neighborhood bar and grill with only cans of beer from the cooler, and top shelf booze. If you live in Evansville, and you've never gone there... get a sitter, plan about 3 hours of time, plan on spending a buck and eating a ton. What a great place. Oh, yeah, and DO take a checkbook, or plenty of cash. They do not deal with credit cards... probably a policy I should follow....

This place is a hoot ! You have to come for the experience -- the Salad and bread is all part of it. And don't be in a hurry, either-- just bring a table of friends and enjoy a leisurely meal. The Arabian specialties are delicious and perfectly seasoned. It's a great change of pace -- and totally out of the ordinary.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
