I traveled from Chicago on business to Evansville and was excited to try a new German restaurant a few months ago. I saw the great reviews and was looking forward to the Jager Schnitzel. Service was attentive and there was a good selection of ice cold beer. However, the food came in 2 minutes, which is a bad sign. Not made to order. The schnitzel was tough and looked like ground meat? Never seen a schnitzel that wasn't white meat? i couldn't saw through with a steak knife. The gravy was horrible too. I wouldn't feed it to a dog. It was $30!! Just sad people think the food is good there. Maybe an off night? Note to Chef . Get some tips from a place in Frankfort IL called Chef Klaus.

I think this place really rocks. Especially for Evansville which is the home of the chain restaurant. The beers are great, the decor is great, the food is great, and the prices are good. My brother takes his Chicago buisness customers here and they beg to go back everytime they come to E-Town.

My 3 stars is for the food. I love the Kraut Balls. I also enjoy the beer tap selection. However, I came in this past Monday night for dinner (after a 6 hour drive from Chicago) only to be told they were OUT OF GERST BEER. I mean, really? How do you run out of your signature beer? Needless to say, I was disappointed. There are few reasons to visit Evansville, and this place is one of them. Even though I can get plenty of German food in Chicago, I really wanted the beer. Maybe when I go to Nashville in a few months they'll have it in stock. I guess I'll call ahead!

the wife and i had dinner there last night. not sure if we just had a bad server or what but it took her like forever to bring us our food. and we were there very early around 5pm so the place was not that busy yet. the place looks nice and food was good . we both enjoyed the ham and kraut rolls and the potato pancake. good beer selection. the smoked sausgaes were good and i really enjoyed the red cabbage. maybe a little too pricy. unless you are going for the steaks instead of the german food, ordering a few of those appetizers plus drinks would be a better choice for 2 people.

  • Rick M.

Neat decor if you like older things. Food was okay. So many people rave about this place. I've been a few times and it's been okay, but nothing to write home about. It must be an "Evansville Thing" that I just don't get.

  • Dan H.

I always get the Fried Catfish here. I think it's the best in town. They don't serve fiddlers here--they serve cornmeal breaded, deep fried catfish filets. I ordered the basket instead of the full dinner and had plenty to eat. The basket comes with fries, slaw and cornbread. The only problem is they put the fries on the bottom of the basket and then put the fish, a bowl of slaw and the corn bread on top of the fries and that ruins the fries. If you take the extra step to make skin-on fries then don't bury them in the bottom of the basket! You gotta respect the fries, people!

  • John P.

As others have said, the food is mediocre. Some of the appetizers are pretty decent, but the main dishes are heavy and greasy. (Do not bring a German here; they will be offended by the heavy-handed, country-fried approach taken to their nation's food, not to mention the bizarre brown gravy on the spätzle). But the faux-Bavarian atmosphere is great fun and the beer selection is SUPERB! They have dozens of beers, and the selection of German and Belgian beers is really something to celebrate. While many places serve undistinguished American Craft beers that are stupidly over-hopped, this place serves classic Double Bocks, Abbey Ales, Dark Lagers, and a huge assortment of wheat beers that will delight the old-world beer connoisseur.

  • Aaron H.

Well I shouldn't complain because I was at a German restaurant and ordered ribs, however they were dry as a bone. The cornbread cakes were equally as dry. Guess it depends on the day and what you get. Good beer selection here and kind of a neat place, but be careful what you order. A bit pricey for what you get as well.

I enjoyed my experience at Gerst and would certainly return. The wine and beer selection is great. Gerst beer is a treat. Most of the food shared by our table received high praise. Sauerkraut balls, ham balls, & oysters for apps were excellent. I ordered the Wiener Schnitzel (almost $20). That was disappointing because it was really overcooked. My friend's fried tenderloin sandwich was half the price and five times as good. If I ordered something else, I would probably have given it 5 stars.

In town for business and was invited here for some local flavor. Nice beer selection. Enjoyed a Bells Amber in a fish bowl. Always ask, because most the time the fish bowl is cheaper and contains more beer. Not enough to be scared of, just do it. I ordered the Sausage sampler. That got me a platter with three fat sausages of my choosing. I'm not a sausage expert by any means. Made for a tasty meal and more than one should be expected to eat. Just try choking down three whole sausages. Also had the apple sauce, hot german potato salad that isn't hot, but very sweet, and some corn bread cakes. Every thing was good, but nothing blew me away. (If you made it through that review without giggling once about all the sausage references, good for you, you are an adult. I am not, I laughed every time I typed it.)

Enjoyed this place. Their beer is quite tasty. Had the sampler with brackwurst, weinersnitzle & stroganoff. All were very good

I'm not really a fan of German food but given the dearth of non-chain restaurants in E-vil, I've eaten here several times. You don't go here if you're watching your weight - german food is heavy, filling but oh so good with a draft beer- which is served in frozen mugs - a nice touch. The Staff is very friendly and accommodating. I've had many dishes that I highly recommend even though they don't sound so good (grilled bologna sandwich, Pig knuckles & sauerkraut, sausage sampler, and smoked pork chops). I've had one item that was very average- the Gerst House appetizer sampler. Everything was deep fried but it all tasted the same. The decor is terrific albeit a little noisy due to the high ceilings, metal ceiling works, and the lack of fabric. But there is outside seating for those that want to avoid the noise. Bottom line - this place is on E-vil original and deserves your business.

Have been there before, never really great service but put up with it because of the great beer selection. Today went in and stood at door waiting to be seated for awhile. Finally just motioned to the bar tender that I would seat myself outside. His curt response was to go back to front and wait to be seated. I did go back to the front and waited as wait staff stood around and looked at me. Stood at entrance too long without being seated for 2nd time and walked out. They lost a customer today due to their rude customer behavior.

In a town with this many germanics there has to be some tasty German fare. Good beer selection. Tasty potato pancakes. I thought the spatzle was missing something though. The weinerschnitzel was pretty good too. All around a pretty solid place.

My husband and I was in Evansville In on 10-14-2011 and after reading reviews on here opted to give the German Restaurant Gerst Bavarian Haus a try..I used to live in Germany so I was very excited about trying the food. It was below par, It was a disappointment to me. I don't recommend this to anyone who knows what really food made in Germany taste like..if you just want to try German Food then its okay, but if you TRULY know what your tasting..you will bitterly DISAPPOINTED !!! I was excited to eat there. I told my husband he would have a real treat..thank goodness he has never eaten food made in Germany so he had nothing to gauge it against..We shared a platter of three..We got the Bratwurst, The Goulash and the Weiner Schnitzel with sauerkraut and hot potato salad with rye bread and butter. He had a Gerst draft and I had iced tea with lemon.. The Wiener Schnitzel was DRY..horrible ..and bland! The Goulash was okay, I have had better but my husband enjoyed it. We both enjoyed the Bratswurst..but how can you truly mess that up??? The sauerkraut okay and he literally spit out the hot potato salad..it was too sweet and vinegary..the rye bread and butter was excellent!!! The Beer was good and cold and not bad tasting for a Amber brew..the tea was good!! We paid $28 plus taxes and tip.. Got to krogers or the meat market buy your own and cook it yourself..just as good!!!

Ja! Das ist gut! If you're craving German (that also has American for the picky ones) food and a fishbowl of ice cold beer then this is the place! The setting is an old hardware store decorated with a lot of random and interesting items. Great place for dinner and a great place for just drinks if you're in the area.

  • Paul L.

The ambience was very authentic but I would rate the service as only so so. When I'm offered information about plate special discounts, one time is enough. Continuously coming back to it only makes me feel like maybe he didn't think I could afford anything else! Annoying. I had the sausage as an appetizer which was ok. I moved on to the Jäger Schnitzel with spatzel and mashed potato dinner. It was good but nowhere near what I've had in Germany but it was good. I guess it just felt mass produced. Beer selection was pretty good.

Usually packed but the food is worth it. The fried pork tenderloins are the best. I haven't found a place that has a better tenderloin yet. Wide variety of beer.

Went here during a busy weekend, Shrinerfest, it was packed. The house beer was by far the best bang for the buck. Great and tasty, super cheap for each goblet. They had a wide selection of beer that I haven't seen and also a ton of Tin Man of course. I had the pick 3 entrees and all were fantastic. It definitely took a long time but the kitchen was taking long all night. All that I had was great from the Schnitzel, sauerbraten and the goulash. Everything was great, the sides though were questionable, the mac and cheese was horrible. Tasted like Velveta cheese, not convincing at all. over all a great place, would love to go back and eat again.

I remember coming here as a kid and not liking the place, but I went today and it changed my perspective. The Reuben was good, but I wish it had some more meat on it. I liked the warm potato salad. The gerst sampler was great. Although I was disappointed with the kraut balls, I wish they had meat in them. My girlfriend ordered the stroganoff. I tried some and it was really good. There house wheat beer wasn't very enjoyable. The wheat taste was too much. Overall tho it's one of the better chains here in evansville.... That hostess tho... Not so friendly

UPDATE: Several dinners at the GERST and they are STILL my favorite restaurant in the area!

So the kraut balls are fantastic. They are an amazing crispy, creamy pork and saurkraut way to start the meal. I had the combo platter with the pork chop, sauerbraten and Wiener schnitzel. This "combo sampler" had full size portions of each. Portions on the whole were large. I will say the Wiener schnitzel and sauerbraten were excellent. The pork chop was really good as well, but it was overshadowed by how excellent the other two were. For sides, I got saurkraut and spaetzel. The saurkraut was good and the spaetzel was great. The beer selection here is very strong. A mix of traditional German beers and craft American drinks. Personally, I think the German beer pairs better with the food, but I cannot help but love anywhere that offers a solid beer selection like here. They also have wine but I didn't study their selections. Our server was super friendly and personable. Service on the whole is excellent and all food came out quickly. So did the beers.

This restaurant has a massive menu, for a first visit, that made it hard to decide! So, it was made easier with the combo plate of Kielbasa, Goulash and pork Schnitzel with was all excellent! I personally got the grilled chicken sandwich and could not have been happier. The only knock was the bloody mary, it was not one of the better ones i've had. All in all it was very good and would definitely go back the next time in Evansville!

Great beer selection and different atmosphere. The patio is really nice on a fall day. I've only had a few food items but the fried pork sandwich is awesome.

Whenever I am in town to see family, I feel it is mandatory to visit Gerst Bavarian Haus every single time. Do people really say that the Midwest is boring? Well, not here! Whether it is day or night, Gerst is the best place to pull up to the bar with friends and drink some amazing beer. The massive selection on tap, and the quality of service and food are exceptional. Best service is at the bar, of course. I am not even a beer drinker, but I just keep coming back for more. Plenty of street parking in historical Evansville downtown. The food pairs amazingly well with the beer and the overall lively atmosphere is why I visit. Mainly German food, but perfect in every way. Massive portions for sharing, served piping hot with an ice cold beer when it is snowing outside. Yes please! Party atmosphere (family style) when the outside is still, it just warms my heart.

Great meal with an awesome beer selection. Everything about this experience was enjoyable. This place has a great ambiance and loads of character. Our table ordered sandwiches, stroganoff, and snitzels. Everything was delicious and the kraut balls...wow. We will definitely come back.

We were visiting from Indianapolis and came across this incredible place. I loved the decor and the fun atmosphere. We ordered a sausage sampler for an appetizer. You get a wonderful variety of sausages plus two sides. For dinner, my husband and I split the Gerst Haus special which gives you a chance to try multiple dishes and sides for a very reasonable price. All of the food was fantastic, and I highly recommend the stroganoff or the braised pork! And definitely the potato salad! After dinner, my table stood and applauded the kitchen, because the food was so ridiculously good and our service was exceptional. We can't wait to visit Evansville again so we can eat here again.

The food is very authentically German! The kraut balls, bratwurst, and red cabbage are amazing. The service was impeccable and relaxing with Rachel as our server. I will definitely go back when I am in town!

Wow. This. Was. GREAT! The place was packed, which was a good sign. But there was virtually no waiting - the customer management was superb. And the food was fantastic! Highly recommended.

My wife and I are big German food fans...stationed in Germany three years. Only positive here is the service. The other negative reviews of the German food are sadly spot on. Beer was warm, schnitzel was undercooked, spatzle was bland. Perhaps they're American entrees are better.

  • Jennifer S.

If you like traditional German food, come here. Servers make great recommendations. The sauerkraut is seasoned with a bit of brown sugar to cut the acid. The beat is not the brat but everything else was excellent.

I can't say I am a German Food Connoisseur as I have now only eaten at 3 German restaurants. But this was the first German restaurant I had ever been to and O.M.G. I was in heaven! I got the Pork Chop, German Potato Salad and Cabbage, if I remember correctly. It was amazing! I was with my parents and they were both quite impressed as well. Even though my dad wished he had more food on his plate, lol. I have talked this place up ever since. I wish it were closer to where I live though.

As a member of the Wagnerian Drinking Society and the Deutscher Club of Clark, I found the Gerst Haus experience just okay. I don't think anyone from this place has been within a thousand miles of Germany. I don't know what it is in the Midwest with these frozen beer glasses. I mean they serve the beer so cold you can't even taste it. When I did get a room temperature glass and allowed the beer to come to the correct temperature every thing was fine. The food on the other hand is just so so. the spaetzle was overcooked and mushy. The grease also flowed forth from the wursts and schnitzel. And what is with sauerkraut balls?? I have traveled all over Germany and have never encountered them except in the Midwestern USA. For the inexperienced this place is okay. It is not very authentic German food. Its poorly prepared handed down recipe crap that has lost any of its real cultural flavor. Om-ma is spinning in her grave.

This is my favorite watering hole in Evansville! Paul puts a variety of beers on tap, choosing is the hard part My husband and I always sit at the bar, but I've been coming here long enough to know the wait staff is excellent! We usually get an appetizer to go with the beer, Kraut Balls or fried pickles. You can't go wrong with those. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because I think their prices are way too high, (this isn't the Eastside) but the staff and beer keep me coming back for more!

  • Buck W.

Americanized German food...it's good. But I wouldn't call it authentic...except for the Pig Knuckles. Had a trio platter...went with Goulash, Sauerbraten, and Weiner Schnitzel...white beans, and kraut as sides. If you can manage to eat the entire dish you won't go away hungry....very generous portions. The food was good...but my biggest complaint for a German restaurant is the portion size of the kraut...probably about three or four bite portion size. The portion size of the sauerbraten was huge, a bull-full of German pot roast...cut back on the SB and give more kraut!! Good selection of beer, nice atmosphere, and service was friendly/good. I'd go back...actually deserves 3-1/2 stars.

Had dinner tonight. I'm not Alan of German food, but decided to give shot. I ordered sauerkraut balls and schnitzel. The food was ok, greasy though. Service was good and fast. Tried 8oz of beer. Paid $40 for all that. Did not enjoy my dinner, just ok

We were visiting my brother in-law who lives in Evansville and he suggested we all have dinner here. We arrived around 8pm on a Saturday and the place was packed. It's a large space with a nice bar and separate dining area. To be honest I don't normally enjoy German food but I came in with an open mind. We started with a round of beer. They have several German beers on draft including a type they brew themselves. You can order them in a "fish bowl" and they run from $4-$6 a glass. For dinner we started with the GERST SAMPLER - $14 - Fried oysters, ham rolls, kraut balls, potato pancake, sauerkraut and Pumpernickel. The fired oysters were not that great and a bit odd in my humble opinion. The potato pancake and sauerkraut was the best I've had. We also ordered the PIG KNUCKLE - $10 - Marinated and simmered until tender, with sauerkraut and Pumpernickel. The boys loved it but I thought it tasted just like ham and was served surrounded by a large layer of fat. We ordered two dinners between the three of us. The REUBEN - $12 --corned beef, Swiss cheese, sauerkraut on grilled Pumpernickel and the SCHNITZEL- $22 ( Veal )-Seasoned and lightly breaded, fried to a golden brown that came with German potatoes and red cabbage. Everything was delicious, service was impeccable and when I came back in town I will demand to eat here again.

Best place to go while in evansville. The atmosphere is great, the bar is really nice, and the wait staff are excellent. The best waitress they have is Cathy. Make sure to ask for her). They have so many beers on tap and the biggest pretzel ever. There food is super good.

This is my go to place when visiting Evansville. I don't think it was here when I lived here as a kid, but it feels like it has been here forever. The atmosphere is family friendly and tavernish all on one. The food is amazing and I don't use that term lightly. Since I have gone veggie I no longer get the giant vat of mayo with a side of fried pork tenderloin sandwich, but if I ever go back to meat it will likely be because of that sandwich. My companions both got a pork tenderloin, but I was not in vegetarian hell because of the German fries. It looked like a small portion, but I could not make my way though. Soft, seasoned potatoes and onions - so good. It maybe was enhanced by the two fishbowls I got. (Another thing we don't have in TN.). I also got cucumbers and onions in sour cream- yum. I can't say anymore. Definitely a favorite.

Who doesn't love a plate full of delicious, stick-to-your-ribs meat and potatoes and a large, frothy German beer? It doesn't get any better than that, folks. I personally love German food, but I realize it may be an ethnicity of food that lots of people haven't tried. If you fall into this group, don't be afraid...it's all pretty easy to get behind (fried meats covered in gravy, stewed parts of various animals, and pickled veggies). And if you're still not sold, this place has an "American" side of the menu, too. I come to Evansville for work every now and then, and I always make it a point to drop by the Gerst Haus. I highly recommend the pig knuckles (think delicate morsels of corned beef encased in pork fat...that's what it reminds me of), spaetzle (noodles made by dribbling batter into boiling water + gravy), jaeger schnitzel (breaded pork cutlet covered in mushroom gravy), and their sauerkraut and pickled red cabbage. Everything on the menu is outstanding, though. I just can't say enough good things about this place! The atmosphere is really great, too. You'd expect a loud, fun sort of ambiance, and that's what you get. Everyone's there to stuff their bellies with goodies, drink a (huge) beer or two, and have a good time. The waitresses all seem to have worked there forever, too, and they know the menu well if you have any questions or need further recommendations.

I come to Evansville every month or two to visit and I ALWAYS visit this place at least once. When I go, I want a handful of my ashes worked into these floorboards. It's that special. Great German restaurants are few and far between and this one is the genuine thing. Order anything off of the menu and you will be happy, but I suggest the Munich Cheese Dip, The Reuben, Jager Shnitzel or The Sausage Sampler with a Brat, Knockwurst and Mett Ring. They have an enormous list of draft beers (German and American classics and seasonals). Get a fish bowl, grab a booth, cheers with good friends and stuff your faces.

I have been to Gerst Haus many, many times and there is a reason for that. The food, the staff and the atmosphere are simply the best. There has never been a time that I have been disappointed and I am one of those guys that tries things all over the menu. Also, the beer selection is one of the best in Evansville. Highly recommended!

Well, if you are German or have been there recently then the only thing Bavarian that we ate are the pig knuckles. The red cabbage (blaukraut) is way too sweet and chunky - who in Germany serves chunky cabbage. The sauerkraut is good providing you can find it on the plate. As for the spaetzle... I am not certain what box they came from nor do I know what package the gravy came from but lets just say "skip that dish". On to the kraut balls. They are an entirely different matter. Let's start with a partially frozen center to indicate the "homemade" quality. They sure aren't Bavarian (cream cheese????)and again....where's the kraut? Nice horseradish sauce however. Now I know that a lot of folks think this is good German food and I don't want to disappoint them. Just don't go to Germany and expect the same thing. It misses the mark significantly. As for it being a form of Americanized German food.... it appears to satisfy the masses. The service was delightful. From the moment we hit the front door to the helpful waitress we could not have been more pleased. Each was attentive and made us feel at welcome.

Wow, I had the sausage sampler and it was great, a full meal for me. The bartender was very knowledgeable and friendly.

I love this place! I come here every time I come home. They have the best kraut balls I've ever had. The beer is super cold and the food is hot, savory, and oh so good!! Service is quick and friendly and the atmosphere is cozy. I love it!!

It's great that Evansville has such a wonderful German restaurant, something that's hard to find even in much bigger cities. Chalk it up to the large German population in the area I guess. We had a terrific meal, and their German beer selection is second to none.

The worst bar ever!! The beer had black specks in them, the dirty martinis my friends ordered where Carmel colored for some odd reason, and last the shots we ordered were way off!! I have never complained about a place before but this place deserves to be shut down!!!

Great beer, great food, great atmosphere. Loved this place. Just wish they had pretzels and a spicy mustard. You need a spicy mustard! Otherwise, delicious. Little gem in the city most wouldn't find

This is a neat place, but not one of my favorites. Huge selection of beer and always good service. I'm not a fan of their German food, but their American food is darn good. Trip: Try to avoid this place in the summer because it gets really hot in the dining area.

My favorite restaurant in the state. I always make coming here a priority when i'm in town. Stellar beer selection, great service, awesome building, and killer german food. The german potatoes are killer side. I usually opt for one of the daily specials.

Had a few hours to kill in Evansville and stopped here for lunch. Got a small but delicious meal of hot potato salad and ham balls (sort of like croquettes with finely diced ham, cheese, etc). The draft beer list seemed a bit short for all the talk about it, but I got a little 8oz trippel that was very good.

This place is ok. Old wood bar the full length of the restaurant. Approx 50+ beers on tap. How can you go wrong with that. Staff is friendly after you initiate the conversation. I'm here on a business trip. But, it appears if you are in a larger group you get more conversation from the bartender. Maybe I look funny, perhaps. Food is pretty damn good.

I hated this place as a kid, but thats because I was a picky eater (so extreme in fact that the only three things I ate, and I'm not kidding--the ONLY three--were hot dogs in the microwave with no bun, microwaved eggs, and white rice--but never together!). My mom, whom I'm really basing my 3-star review off of, dragged my sister and myself here on occasion when my stepfather was out of town (he was a trucker) and she didn't feel like cooking. I remember eating bread and some kinda potato thing. She absolutely loved the Ruben sandwich and always got a side of sourkraut which I thought looked like spaghetti vomit. She's always said if she's back in Evansville, she'd stop in.

My son suggested going here for my birthday dinner. Why not. What can I say about this place but GREAT!!! We started out with a "fishbowl" of beer. I opted for Warstiener, served ice cold and lasted through the whole meal! I choose from the German Classic Combination dinners of bratwurst, beef stroganoff and goulash with spaetzle. My choice of 2 sides were the German potato salad and the cucumbers& onions. The bratwurt was warm but delicious. The beef stroganoff was to die for! I have taken great pride in making a pretty good stroganoff but this one is the best i ever had, period! The goulash was outstanding and served hot. the german potato salad was very delicious and served room temperature. I did not really care for the cucumbers & onions though. I would have prefered an oil and vinegar mix but was told it was already made in a sour cream dressing which was as thin as water. The vegetables were very fresh and crisp though. Completing the dinner was a nice slice of dark rye bread which was really fresh. For desert my son and I decided on splitting a slice of German chocolate cake served 3-layered with a healthy scoop of vanilla ice cream which was oh so good! Overall it was a birthday to remember especially whe 2 servers came to the table and announced to all that it was my birthday!

Their drinks are tasty - love the fishbowls - but what is with all the staff? They just stand around doing nothing! Also, how does this mesh with our sampler appetizer platter taking 20 minutes to come out? Don't get it. Also, sticky table tops.

I really struggled on deciding 3 or 4 stars on this one. Pros: Great beer selection. Any place that has Arrogant Bastard is a friend of mine. Good atmosphere, inside. Enjoyed the appetizers, would go back to try the fried pickles since I didn't get a chance. Potato Pancake was good. Cons: I'm past my "gorging my face" phase so the serving size of the enteree was just way to much. Seeing a huge sausage and a pound of potato's in front of me kinda killed my appetite before I even started eating. I guess the serving size justifies their somewhat high prices. But then again, maybe I'm just not a fan of German food. Overall, I would go back for a beer and a few bites, but probably would not get get dinner again because its not worth it to me. Maybe its just my tastes because I would not call the food bad in anyway.

We stopped in after reading the reviews online. What a treat! The wiener schnitzel and sauerbraten were both amazing! The fried pickles were also great. They have an awesome selection of beer. The portions are quite large, so be prepared to split a meal or take some home! Quite a great value for the size. My only complaint (but not big enough to reduce the rating) is the apple strudel doesn't even resemble strudel. It's an apple compote between two thin pieces of pastry.

Every time I eat at the Gerst Haus I end up saying "Why don't I eat here more often!" I'm not much of a partaker of alcohol, so I can't tell you much about the large assortment of beers, but I can talk about several items on the menu. The smoked pork chop is my second favorite pork chop (only eclipsed by Patti's 1800 Settlement in Grand Rivers, KY). It's flavorful and cooked to perfection. My second favorite item is the Goulash. Delicious and such a large plateful that you're guaranteed to be taking some home. The Goulash is also real bargain. I've enjoyed every item I've had including the Catfish, the Saurbraten, and Kielbase Dinner. As for the sides, I really like the Hot German Potato Salad, the Red Cabbage and their Apple Sauce. It isn't on the menu, but I always ask if they have Green Beans because sometimes they'll surprise me -- and they're great also. It's a winner and you'll feel at home dressed up for the town or in blue jeans.

Not enough tables for seating over 4; our group of 5 waited a good half hour while smaller parties were quickly seated in front of us. The place was loud and noisy. The wait staff were in a constant bustle, doing their job, but not really friendly or personal. They seemed to busy to give much attention other than what was necessary at your table, but they were prompt accommodating requests. The food was good. I had a brat and pig knuckle dinner, not knowing that a pig knuckle was actually a ham hock with a different name. Basically, peel off a layer of fat to find lots of meaty ham. It made for a sizeable dinner, enough to save leftovers and make another meal out of it for later. I tried the German potato salad which really wasn't that great, sweet and bland, probably the least tasty of that variety I've ever had. Others at our table tried the catfish which was very tasty, mild and tender, and the Goulash, a very large portion of a dark colored stew. Not very attractive, but it was good. Someone tried the German fries and they were basically fried potatoes and onions. Suggestions would be for more larger tables or booths to accommodate parties larger than 4 more quickly. Maybe buffered zones to make it more cozy, less noisy and hectic feeling. We would probably return because the food was enjoyable and that the most important part of dining out.

Love the Kielbasah. You must get the Kielbasah. If you're Yelping for a place to eat - go to here. Get the Kielbasah. This place is yummy German food with gigantic portions. Mmmhhhmmmm Kielbasah - smoked, salty, moist sausage. Yum.

Gerst Haus is a must try in Evansville. The German food they serve is great, and the building is really neat. I have to order the potato pancakes every time I eat here because they are that good. You get three large potato pancakes with a side of sour cream and apple sauce, and although they are meant to be shared, I usually get an order just for myself! They have a ton of beers on tap, and even more in bottles-by far one of the bigger beer lists in Evansville with unusual beers from all over the world. The bar area is nice, with a large antique bar and several cozy booths. Try the patio on a warm night, it's a fun place to people watch especially during the fall festival. Overall, a great restaurant!

A beautiful spring day demands an outside table and an hour and a half lunch. I was the only imbiber of the work group, but that didn't stop me I had 2. It's not often I can get my Upland Wheat beer, however, they have a strong selection of drafts too. I ordered a combo to get darn near everything. The meat was all flavorful, plentiful and tender; a very well executed meal. The 'hot potato salad' was awesome. This beats all my other German reviews. Can't wait to try the bar and enjoy the nice tavern feel inside.

When I am visiting my parents in the great unwashed middle, a visit to the Gerst Bavarian Haus is a must. Southern Indiana has a rich, German heritage (no, I do not work for the tourism board!), and nowhere is that more evident than at the Gerst Haus (well, maybe in Jasper, but I digress). Everything here is AMAZING. Well, if you like meat and potatoes, which is pretty much everything on the menu. Start out with the potato pancakes with applesauce, then move on to one of the combination plates. Schnitzel, and Braten, and Sausage, Oh my. If you are in the area, check it out. Local flavor - Tri-State style.

Oh yum! The first time I went here, I didn't like it. I had the golausch. (however you spell it)....not good. My dad always gets it every now and then, forgetting, and he's never liked it. HOWEVER..... all their sausages are great excellent fried catfish my dad obsesses over their ruben sandwich, he just loves that their mashed potatoes are WONDERFUL....they aren't just ordinary mashed potatoes and my favorite, which is out of character for me, is the porkchop! Its simply WONDERFUL and FILLED with flavor the atmosphere here is great and really makes you think you are in ..... a .... german brewhaus or something! Its all great

I am not really a fan of german food, but I can say that Gerst Haus has the best fried catfish dinner in town. Make sure you order it well done though so its nice and crispy. One thing I do miss about the Gerst haus of old was the couple that used to play the snare and accordion. Sadly, they are no longer with us.

My wife and I are big German food fans...stationed in Germany three years. Only positive here is the service. The other negative reviews of the German food are sadly spot on. Beer was warm, schnitzel was undercooked, spatzle was bland. Perhaps they're American entrees are better.

If you like traditional German food, come here. Servers make great recommendations. The sauerkraut is seasoned with a bit of brown sugar to cut the acid. The beat is not the brat but everything else was excellent.

Great meal with an awesome beer selection. Everything about this experience was enjoyable. This place has a great ambiance and loads of character. Our table ordered sandwiches, stroganoff, and snitzels. Everything was delicious and the kraut balls...wow. We will definitely come back.

Neat decor if you like older things. Food was okay. So many people rave about this place. I've been a few times and it's been okay, but nothing to write home about. It must be an "Evansville Thing" that I just don't get.
