Best Mexican Restaurant in NWI! Fresh ingredients, authentic food, and quick service... you can tell they take care while preparing your meal. Everything is cooked perfectly and tastes delicious. I recommend to everyone! They recently expanded and have more seating to eat in. GREAT PLACE.

I had a chicken burrito for lunch Reasonably priced and good service. Nothing fancy, but will definitely return.

Stop by here spur of the moment one hungry afternoon. I real love Mexican food. Very plain inside, but as long as it's clean and the food is good that's ok with me. Ordered the Fat Burrito with pork. The salsa was excellent! I asked and they make it there. The chips were average. I wish all Mexican restaurants toasted or heated the chips. Makes all the difference. They didn't unfortunately. The burrito was decent. Need to work on making sure the ingredients are spread evenly and not half pork and the other half lettuce. I'm not sure if they actually put the sour cream on the inside. I would have preferred it on the outside. I will go back and try one other plate before I decide if it is worth making it a regular lunch stop. Service was fine also. Oh, and I don't speak Spanish and that is what the t.v. was set on. I know I know a Mexican restaurant, but still.

Absolutely delicious and LARGE burritos!!! I always have enough to take home and eat as leftovers! Their rice is great as well! Wonderful and friendly service!

The large guacamole is tiny. The burritos are huge but kind of salty. Since this is the only easy takeout Mexican place near the square, I'll go back, but not because the place is amazing.

Wow. Consistently good. Great flavor. Restaurant itself is only perfunctory. this place is really about take out.

I love this place. I work about 100 yards away from Fat Burrito so I frequent a lot for lunch and dinner. I have dined in and carried out from here. Its a good, authentic Mexican restaurant that has your standard Mexican fare. I recommend the tacos and burritos. I usually get steak or pork and have had good experiences with both.

Some of the best Mexican food I've ever had, so happy I found this place! I'll definitely be returning next time I visit the Merrillville area! Very generous servings at low prices, fast service, large menu.

Had the steak burrito, eh, steak tasted bland...

Must try the Fat Burrito (steak)! The burritos are HUGE and delicious...plus the guacamole, salsa, and chips are fresh and tasty! Best taste of Mexico in the Crown Point area. Friendly service and a great value.

I went in to eat on lunch hour from work. There was plenty of time to order and et. The fat burrito was delicious. In fact, it was so fat that I had enough left over for a second meal. The price was very reasonable as well.

  • Daniel T.

The overall experience was good. The wait time for a burrito sit in was about 30. Chips and salsa had a good balanced season and freshness. We all got fat steak and chicken burritos and they were so filling and the price can't beat it.

Best Mexican food in the area. My family had the burrito, tostadas, Tacos, guacamole, pico de gallo and orchata it was all very good. It is authentic Mexican food. I am Mexican and love authentic Mexican food. We will definitely be eating here again. They recently moved next door to to a much bigger space.

Solid place, good food at a good price for the portion you get. Of course like every other Mexican joint, you get chips and salsa when you sit down. The chips were... well they were chips. The salsa was great though, just a bit of spiciness and they added some fresh chopped cilantro in it which set it apart from some of the other similar places in the area. I ordered the Chicken Burrito with Spanish Rice, my lovely companion had ordered the Steak version. Burritos are pretty giant - even for the regular sized ones. Stuffed just the right amount so you don't have some sloppy mess on your plate after the first bite. I thought the chicken was delicious and the other ingredients in the burrito were perfectly proportioned to each other. I got a couple bites of the Steak Burrito too, also absolutely om nom nom good. Spanish rice was OK for me but, nothing too special. It was a good accompaniment to the burrito though. Service was good, food came out fast and hot, the restaurant itself was kinda small, but it seemed like the majority of the patrons were getting take out. Over all, I'd say I'd go back for more.

The Huevos con Chorizo is incredible. I'm a big fan of this place, but the reason it doesn't get a 5 is because my wife doesn't like it, which means that not everyone loves it. Great chorizo, great pork, decent prcies.

Excellent, We got fat burritos, Huge. No fillers added like rice and beans. Meat plus a blend of garden stuff and sour cream. Guacamole was jus ok. You get a lot of bang for your buck too. I will be back.

Went there bc reviews seemed good, not the case for me, after we sat down and gave order it took about an hour to receive, it seemed as if they were making all the walk-ins before the people sitting for food, no one had anything but chips and salsa on the tables for as long as we didn't, the salsa had no real flavor. I had the steak taco and meat seemed a little on the fatty side the chicken flauta had no flavor as well, will probably not return.

Maybe Fat Burrito is one of the more authentic places down in the Merrillville area. I don't know... I went there today and didn't find FB to be that great. It's a small taqueria style place, which is fine. The chips and salsa at my table were OK. I liked the salsa, but I prefer more of the thin and crispy chips. These were on the thicker side. Anyway, it was fine. I ordered a stuffed pepper burrito (fat = large). OK, first of all, nobody needs to order a fat burrito; WAY too huge. Not knowing that my first time there was too bad. I asked the waiter if these were like Chipotle size, but he told me he didn't know because he'd never been there. I guess that makes sense... :-) Anyway, this thing was so big and it comes covered with sauce so it has to be eaten with a knife a fork. Kind of meh... I only finished like 2/3 of it. More importantly, the burrito itself was kind of bleh. Not bad, but pretty much bland. Maybe the normal veggie burrito would've been better / safer for a first visit choice. I also think it had too much lettuce - which probably contributed to the blandness. The service also could've been better. After getting me my food and drink, the waiter never came back to check on me and I'm not high maintenance or anything like that. I just would've liked a refill on my Pepsi. I had my last few bites... dry... if you will. Anyway, instead of waiting around, I walked up to the front counter to pay so I could leave. Maybe one guy up front isn't enough at dinner time.

I feel like I HAVE to update Fat Burrito to a 5 star rating. They have recently remodeled their location. And they won my heart with some free guacamole on the opening day of their new location! The new place looks amazing, we still get great service from our favorite waiters, the food is still great, and I give these guys 2 thumbs up for making one of my favorite local places that much better!

This has become one of my favorite lunch spots and I tell everyone I know to try it out or I take them there myself! My favorite meal is the steak tacos. They are loaded with fixings and the price is spot on. I know I can expect the same quality every time I go.

Very good and much better than any sort of cookie cutter Mexican restaurant it actually has a distinct taste very flavorful steak and chicken I was taken back on how good it was and also the portion size. The actual fat burrito can probably feed 3 people no joking. I would recommend this place for sure.

  • Daniel M.

I've driven by this place a few times but never stopped because the name "Fat Burrito" I thought was a Tex-Mex or American-style Mexican food. I WAS WRONG. This is a great place. Very authentic. The guys who run the restaurant are from Puebla, Mexico. I tried the pork burrito, suizo style. The meat was about as flavorful as I have ever tasted. Chips and salsa if you dine in. The salsa is GREAT! Place is a little small. But, that's ok the service is quick and a table will clear right away. Good choice for authentic Mexican food.

  • Michelle M.

So good. Amazing Mexican comfort food. The portions are huge and nothing is crazy over priced. Definitely one of the best in the area. We've had the burritos, tacos and bistec ala mexicana. All really good with great flavors. I've also had the tampiquena. This is probably the only thing I wouldn't order again. It was delicious but overpriced for the serving they offer. The rice and beans are just average but really I can't think of anywhere I gush over rice and beans. Maybe I just don't really like rice and beans... They're not located super close to us but I'll make the drive cuz it's worth it. =]

This is a small (4 booths and 4 tables) place but has big flavors in their food! Hopping take-out and reasonable prices! Glad it's local!

  • Mark S.

Small restaurant, fat burritos. We ordered some jalapeño poppers as an appetizer, and were very pleased with them. I got the steak burrito with green sauce, and was surprised at its ginormous size. The only knock I heard about this place was that the salsa was so-so at best. But...I enjoyed that too.

  • Lindsey M.

I read another review from this place from a guy complaining that his burrito was too big. That guy is an idiot. If you come here for the fat burrito, that's exactly what you're going to get and it's awesome. My husband gets the steak and it's the perfect size to eat half now and eat the other half for lunch tomorrow. Great hole in the wall place!

  • Gina J.

Wish we had one of these where I live. Great value, delicious and nice guy at the counter. Super fast. Did not disappoint...fat burrito was huge!

  • David B.

Food was decent, not bad but not amazing either. Fat burrito is definitely FAT - portions were generous and prices are reasonable - we feed 5 for $35. Place is pretty small and a bit run-down, but staff seemed on top of everything and service was good. I'd eat here again.

  • Ed S.

Had a hard time choosing a meal as our server said all the food was good and he was right. We had two fat burritos that were more like 18 inches and 3 inches thick! The chicken inside was juicy and the best endless salsa!

  • Barf V.

Cheap, fast, and friendly. Never had a problem with this place except for my stomach size after eating one of their 40 pound burritos.

  • Jj P.

Great steak and chicken burrito ... Also inexpensive and consistently tasty. They always seem to get your order right when you pick it up. I can't say that for most places .

I called to place an order to go and they had me on hold for five minutes. Their customer service is lacking. I'll pass!

This has turned into one of my favorites close to home. I've still not been able to conquer the fat burrito in one sitting, I may accept defeat and start ordering the regular size. The over salty taste I had with the first visit has not been duplicated. All the food is good, the guys are great, if I had a complaint it's that they need more space for tables.

I felt like I was back in my motherland. The food was on point. Go to Fat Burrito, just stop what you're doing and go. Fat Burrito is greater thanTaco Bell (and Taco Bell is mighty good)

This restaurant has moved next door and the dine in area is much nicer now. The food and service is still great I would strongly recommend the fat burrito.

This is my favorite place for Mexican food in Crown Point, their tacos are delicious and their salsa is too. Yum!

I love this place, cheap fast and decent food. Close to the house. I think the rice is amazing, and I always get the steak burrito. Its fantastic.

their chicken burrito is amazing! it may be the chicken that's so delicious. also, everything is a great price.

  • Ash M.

These reviews aren't that great and I'm only writing bc I really disagree. The food here is really good. I mean, really. I haven't heard of one local person who has EVER complained... actually, I'm usually hearing about how much they enjoyed Fat Burrito. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are more than enough. I go here atleast once a week. Go to Fat Burrito. I really think you'll like it

I am always looking for something new that isn't a chain. If I slowed down a little maybe I would see more of them. I was tired in a hurry and hungry. This fit the bill. I sat and ordered a steak burrito with guac and sour cream. No menu needed. He brought out my Pepsi and chips as I heard the grill fire up with the steak. In no time I had the burro and it was piping hot. Great flavor and very plump. The chips were average, but the salsa was nice and spicy. Great little find. Will definitely be back.

This place is amazing. It's not 100% authentic but it's probably as close as you will get in crown point. I really enjoyed the steak tacos. The guacamole was alright. But it might have just been the avocados weren't ripe yet. I'll def try it again just in case.

  • Dan F.

Got the steak burrito and was satisfied. The steak was very good vs most Mexican restaurants where it would be cheap and dry. . Service was fast and very good. You get a lot of food and prices are very good for what you get.

This place is not bad depending on the day. Some times I've come in and had a wonderful meal, others I have received what looked like a quick, poorly put together meal that didn't taste so fresh. All around, I think it's a good place if you are craving Mexican and it is the closest place.

Best place I've even eaten at in my life. Jose is the best server. Everyone there is super friendly. Food ugh... So good. Try it for your self. By far the best steak burritos and sopes ever. Customize your orders!

I love Mexican food and am always open to new things but this was not the place for me. My brother claims it was pretty good when he went but my experience wasn't as fortune. We ordered takeout which was the specialty, Fat burritos. They were so salty that we needed extra salsa to calm them down. The chips and pico de gallo were excellent though. My brother says I need to give this place a chance as dine in so I may be posting another review in the future.

  • Sherry T.

I have ate here probably about 9 times, I have had many good experiences, and the food is always as good or better that you expect from a fast Mexican pick-up place. However, I did want to mention that when I went there last night and ordered 3 meals, plus Large Guac, and Large Cheese, they sent two bags of chips, each had about a handful of chips in them?? Did not make sense, then they charged me $1 a bag for two more with only a handful of chips lol, Other times, I received huge bag of chips, just for getting salsa. But other than that the Burrito's and Taco's were very good! Probably won't return again, because I LOVE CHIPS :)

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
