I have not had good mexican food since I moved here from Arizona, but last night at Don Pablos I had an authentic Mexican meal. The atmosphere was very inviting, the customer service unbelievable, the food was very awesome and food cooked fresh...

There used to be several Don Pablo's in Columbus, and they were decent, at least better than Chichis. Then they disappeared. Last night, driving through Indiana, we saw one along the road. Sweetie used to love their potato skins, so we swung by. Well, they don't have them anymore, but we stayed and had a good dinner. She got quesadillas, which were fine. The rice and beans with them, and with mine, were both "good not great." I had the Tex-Mex combo, with steak and ribs. The steak was excellent: tender, flavorful, cooked just right. The ribs, meh, there was a bit of flavor in the meat but it was smothered in sauce so I couldn't taste it much. Service was great. The place is nice and open, but the music was super loud and the AC was cranked to where we were shivering. Looks like there are plenty of options nearby.

Last time I was here a month ago, I gave this Don Pablo's a 5. This time was the COMPLETE OPPOSITE. Our waitress was never around when we needed her. She messed up our order not once, not twice, but thrice. The worst of the three, she completely forgot a menu item for our table. The manager brought the missing burrito to us 10 minutes later without an apology, and without a discount. I was sadly disappointed - especially since last time was so great. Based on other reviews, maybe our visit last month was the fluke and our disappointing visit tonight is the norm.

Good service. Large portions. Too large. The need to have lighter menu for those who can't eat big plate of food. Food is ok. Not what i consider true Mexican food, as I lived in New Mexico for a year.

As other reviewers have mentioned, Don Pablo's came onto the scene in Indiana around 1993, and along with a few other Tex-Mex newcomers, they contributed to the demise of Chi-Chi's and some other similar restaurants that had failed to innovate and had over stayed their welcome. Now, 20+ years later, I wonder how long Pablo's will stay in business. Like other reviewers, I was shocked at the slow service, especially considering how empty the place was. My server seemed genuinely shocked when he brought both the soup (appetizer) and the main course at the same time, and didn't have enough table space to put everything. Even with casual dining, timing is everything. The overall quality of the food wasn't particularly bad, but it's just one of those cases where Don Pablo's is failing to distinguish itself. My server also did that thing where he rarely (if ever) said a word to me, preferring to just nod in agreement. So, I don't think I'll be back.

Tried this place last night and it has horrible food. The salsa's, they give you is bland and tastes only like tomatoes. We all had the fajitas, the tortilla shells are made there but, taste like flour and I can't quite put my finger on the other ingredients. The steak had no flavor, it was just steak. All the food was flavor less. I should have known better not to go here when they don't serve soft corn tortillas for the tacos. I will never go back to this place again.

  • Eleanor J.

We will never go back. The atmosphere is cavernous, industrial and unappealing. The hostess who seated us apologized for the leaking roof and said it always did that because of the air conditioning. She had worked there for over a year and said the water had always dripped onto the floor of the main dining room. Really?? Does the health department know about that? The food has absolutely no taste whatsoever. I ordered chicken fajitas and my husband ordered shrimp fajitas... How can a meal prepared with onions and (a very few) peppers taste like nothing??? The chips were slightly stale, the salsa also had no taste at all. Lots of food that is completely bland and not worth the calories. Our server was working hard and tried his best, but the tasteless meal could not be out done by his attempts at decent service. The only positive was my margarita....I had two just so I had some flavor in my mouth during the dinner. Adios Don Pablos!

TAKE FOREVER- ordered to-go QUESO... yes....just QUESO. They said 20 min... i got there 20 minutes later and had to wait almost another 10 for them to put queso in a dang bowl...... Their is an older mexican waiter there (IDK his name). Ive had him about 3 times..... he is a completely A hole... doesn't smile, doesn't give a crap. EVERY TIME I write on the receipt, "get a personality" or "smile for once"...... He is still there and is still extremely rude. If i see he is their i specifically ask to not have him..... Food is good, i usually sit in the bar. There used to be a lady who worked their and she was AMAZING. She left though, so now i barely go. She was the reason my family and I went usually. She always went out of her way to be nice to us.

Don Pablo's is a chain on tex-mex style restaurants. I ordered the grilled shrimp in cilantro lime butter sauce with a side of rice and it was beyond salty. My hubby ordered a burrito and as soon he grabbed it to take a bite, the contents fell off because it wasn't wrapped right. There was a hole under. Then we ordered a sopapilla and it was the greasiest sopapilla we've had in our lives. It was literally floating in grease. The only thing that saved this place from being a 1 star is the coronita which is a margarita with a small bottle of corona. My hubby liked it and it was a pretty interesting drink. The server was also nice though it was obvious she was trying to upsell us with the other dips they have for the chips. If you like Mexican food, definitely stay away from this place. Coming from Los Angeles and my numerous Mexico visits... I know what I'm talking about.

  • Jason B.

The food here is just so tasty if you want to wait an hour and a half for it. Dirty tables and a staff on hand that is just so short they can't keep up. Managers are puppets, so just don't waste your breath talking to them. Corporate Snobs run this place. All their interest is making money$$$. Go to a private owned place to get your Mexican food on unless you have a couple hours to spend at a restaurant... Your Choice.

  • Mike H.

Went on a Monday night and they where on a 15 minute wait. Had 8 tables sat in whole restaurant and 15 dirty tables. After waiting 30 minutes and watching staff do nothing we left and drove to Chuy's. It was worth the drive.

Horribly slow service. Like ridiculously slow. To get drink refills or chip refills took 10+ min. Will not be back.

I guess a nice place for the kids, but I'm not a fan. The food is ok, but not really worth the time. Go to Cancun. Food is more authentic and it's more grown up.

I tried their new empanadas tradicional with guac. It came with queso and lettuce. 6 pieces for $6.

Your basic tex mex. Nice vibe but service is let's say "SLOW". Bs prepared to wait. Big selection and fun bar area.

  • Cathy W.

I am sad to say my last two visits have been painfully disappointing. The Queso Blanco was runny and flavorless, even after we sent it back to the kitchen. Portions too small for the price.

  • Joe F.

Finishing up what has been the worst restaurant experience I can think of in my lifetime. Horrible service. Horrible food. Now all I want to do is pay my bill and leave and I am still waiting for horrible service. There is a single star because Yelp will not allow me to leave zero.

    (1)
  • Travis S.

Was a nice place and had a good lunch.

    (4)
  • Mike G.

All you need to do is sit in the bar and ask for Cathy (and yes your kids can sit in the bar area). Our family eats here like once a week which is odd because we are not "Chain Restaurant" type people. Food and Margs are great. Our 6 year old daughter always wants to go here on her birthday. This is great for my wife and I because they do not serve margaritas at Chuckee Cheese

    (4)
  • Steve C.

The food is as good as any Don Pablos. The service leaves something to be desired. Even when you are the only table in the restaurant, you will wait and wait and wait.

    (2)
  • Phillip H.

Horrible service. Great food. I am torn because I think I just got the only good entree in my group. The waitstaff was 50/50. Our waitress unfortunately was not on the right side of that 50. I went in with a group of 5 about 2 hours before they closed and was practically told to get out that they were closing down their kitchen. 2 hours early, WTF? Nonetheless we chose to stay and the rude service just couldn't end there. Waitress wouldn't serve us alchohol because the bar was closed down and the bartender had taken off for the night. Not even bottled beer. I could go on but it only gets worse from there. The one bright spot was the fajitas I got. Everyone elses orders were wrong, completely cold from sitting for 20+ minutes or burned. Crappy food+Crappy Service= Don Pablo's I am sure some other time if I ever try it again this review will get better but for now, this terrible event left a taste in my mouth im not willing to chance again.

  • Scott J.

Not sure about the food. It took too long to even get served drinks so we voted with our feet. We won't go back. I agree with Phillip H: "Horrible service" and Junie D "Service was tardy".

  • Brian B.

Ugggg, slow service + cold food equals I won't be back.

Nothing too bad and nothing too good... about what you would expect from a chain restaurant. Tuesday was AYCE tacos, which was fun. The sauce from the chicken was good, but a little too juicy, which made the tortillas soggy. Refried beans were burnt badly, but they accommodated with a new corn cake. Had I not been competitively eating with the tacos, I would have had more chips and salsa, which were pretty good. Their dessert specialty is sopapillas, which I highly recommend. The staff is usually pretty observant and quick here, and there isn't usually much of a lunch crowd to delay you.

Blech. Service was tardy (but the server kindly apologized) and food was mediocre. Go to Abuelo's instead -- far superior.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
