Ubiquitous in Indiana, Steak and Shake is consistent, and tasty, but has ungodly amounts of fat, and is just not healthy in general. The service is generally pretty good, and being open 24 hrs is a definite plus. Basically what I'm saying is that it's great drunk food. Just make sure you have a DD because there's no location close enough to the places you get drunk at.

Took 10 mins to get seated and another 15 of waiting for someone to take my order before I left. There were 6+ staff working and only one other 2-person table occupied.

My hubby & I stood a long time waiting to get seated. Three employees just looked at us. We left and remembered that we're in #racist_southern_Indiana.

Friendly, quick, helpful. Very good food. Had to flag down the waitress once. Gave her a big tip anyway. Clean. Wi-Fi worked great !

Steak and Shake is the In'N'Out for Indiana (if you're Californian, you'll know what I mean =P). The greasy Frisco and Patty melt is their trademark entree. The sauce is just so good, even after 5 years, it's still the same. Open 24hours, dine in and drive thro, college students need this other than just regular Denny's. Their skinny french fries was great too. I got to Bloomington so late and my choice was either this or Denny's. The choice is pretty darn obvious, Steak n Shake of course! Parking was almost a havoc during graduation time, it seems like everyone was eating there even at 2am, so I went to the drive thro, 5 mins later my food were ready and that sandwich just melt in my mouth...Yumm.... Too bad I had no space for the Milkshake, if not, I would have ordered it! Just a bump up to 5 stars cause this joint is just a trademark for IU and it's doing me good!!!

I do not eat fast food very often, but happened to have coupons for buy one get one free milkshakes. The milkshakes of choice were of two different categories (one holiday, one regular) and so only applied to two separate coupons. To our delight, the manager was very pleasant and humorous about the situation, and made our night by making the two milkshakes we both really wanted! I am very pleased that this small exception left us two very happy customers.

This is NOT In-n-out of the midwest. Go to Five Guys or even Rally's for that. Super slow service and tiny burgers / fries. Sure it's cheap but you can get twice as much food at Rally's in 1/10 of the time. Shakes are pretty good and cheap, but other than that I wouldn't go.

This particular SnS has gotten my order wrong many times at the drive thru. Me and my girlfriend were forgotten about inside after we placed our order. They never brought our food. Eventually, they gave it to is for free. SnS is always delicious, but the service here is subpar. I've been to In n Out a few times and SnS a lot. The decor is similar and they serve burgers. (In n Out is more like Five Guys)

I love this place!!! I love you can come here at 4am after a night of drinking! The grease infested food is awesome! Cheese Fries, Silver Dollar hashbrowns, the melts and can't forget the milkshakes...Mmmm good!

This review is for the Stake and Shake by the mall, not all of them (which are not just in Indiana by the way). This one sucks. One time it took 40 minutes to get two milkshakes. The have put the wrong stuff, or brought me the wrong stuff every time except once. Yes, only one time did I get what I ordered! Also, crazy George works there, and he's a nut! I work right by here, but never go anymore because they suck so bad. It's too bad too, because the food is not bad. The frisco melt is pretty decent.

I really had a great meal. I had a burger and fries for 4 bucks. It wasn't A LOT of food but definitely enough and with a great shake I left happy and full. The service was topnotch and the atmosphere was nostalgic and fun. I would compare it to Johnny Rockets but less commercial feeling. I would definitely go back.

I wish I had read the reviews before going tonight to this restaurant. Ordered the western bbq bacon steakburger and got just a steakburger with bbq no bacon or cheese. I had given the guy at the drive-thru $8 for a $7.48 order and he gave me only $0.27 back. It took two more tries to get the correct change of $0.52 back. Thank you for a thoroughly unpleasant experience. I will not be back

My friends and I tried to eat here after the bars closed at 3AM Saturday night/Sunday morning - the whole working crew was sitting behind the building by the menu smoking and told us we might as well just leave, because we're not getting served - they didn't feel like working. So there's that. Never going here again.

Open 24 hours and cheap. Perfect for students! I got pretty good service when I visited in April. Haven't been back since, but if I have a craving for a cheap burger and/or shake, I know where to go.

Bad service, like "where did they go never mind I'll do it myself" bad. Avoid disappointment. Stay home and thaw your own stuff.

Suh-low. A new low for service. Had to seat ourselves. The place was not even busy, empty really. Hostess/waitress had no interest in serving. I saw my kid grow an inch waiting to have our order taken. "I'll be back in a minute" was easily 10. If the menu describes a burger with all the stuff, do I really need to say I want all the stuff? I got meat and bread. When I had to walk to the cook to ask he gave me a 'well that's how we do it' response. He obliged when I asked if I could get lettuce, pickle, tomato and onion on the side. Thanks for the favor. As for getting the check, I know glaciers moved. We even saw a whole shift change with the 'hook up' of meals at the counter in front of everyone in the restaurant. Where's the under cover boss to have a chat with these guys?

Waited five minutes to get seated at midnight. We could barely get into the door because there were a line of people trying to pay for their meal. We finally got seated when the hostess got to her stand. She sat us at a table which she had to clean. I looked around and not a single table was clean. The table was cleared but they didn't wipe it down. She stated that she got to work and walked into madness. She gave us four menus, two place mats, and no silverware. A friend asked her for four waters which the hostess had to bring. She got them right away. There were two very large tables. They were there before we had even arrived. Then another 15 minutes until our waitress got to our table. But we told her to go to those large tables because they were there before us and we didn't think they had been waited on. And they hadn't been. They waitress finally got back to us to take our order. We order a garlic double steak burger with fries. And the others got the three shooters and fries and an order of cheesy fries. After an hour after the other table got their food. We got everything expect cheesy fries. She got the cheese and just ate the fries off of our plates. We went to five empty but dirty tables to try and find a bottle of ketchup. All empty but got just enough out of them. I scarfed down the food but didn't have a napkin to wipe my greasy fingers on. So I used the place mat. The waitress apologized about not coming to talk to us or refill our drinks. She gave us two to go cups and our checks which was also wrong. It charged us for the order of cheesy fries we did not get. That was easy to change. The restaurant was super busy. We didn't get any silverware or refills. Our waitress felt sooo bad but it was kind hard wiping your hand on a place mat. The waitress did do her best. I am a waitress and it might be hard to multitask but it comes with the job. It's not hard to bring a pitcher full of water and fill an empty glass. After being in Steak 'n Shake for two hours I think they should've discounted our ticket by even a little. It was ridiculous. It's a good thing that it was a cheap meal.

I can't believe people on here compare Steak N Shake to In-N-Out. That is blasphemous; totally profane. The atmosphere is that of a dirty old diner, the burgers are alright, but the toppings are always wilted and flavorless. The milkshakes are a let down for the price. Not to mention any time I've gone to either of the Steak N Shakes in Bloomington, they have screwed up my order, forgotten items, and taken FOREVER. What the hell are they doing back there? Thats another thing, at In-N-Out you stand there and watch them cutting fresh potatoes, frying the burgs, putting them together assembly-line style from fresh ingredients, and even when its packed it only takes about 10 minutes to get food. STEAK N SHAKE is the complete opposite of this, I feel like something is going on back there they don't want me to know about, and even the people, not to mention the kitchen, seem dirty and unhappy. NEVER AGAIN. (I miss In-N-Out)

This place is discusting, i thought about leaveing as soon as i walked in the door. It took 5 min to get seated then my girlfriend, two kids and I sat down and waited 10 min as two waitresses were standing around looking at eachother and with 2 other tables taken, we just decided to get up and leave. The manager finally decided to ask what the prob was after we got up out of the booth. Id highly recommend staying away from this place, id give it no stars if i could.

steak and shake is to indiana, what mcdonald's is to...the rest of the world. it's fast, it's greasy, it's good....and it's great for those late night visits when partying in this quaint college town. the fish sandwiches are pretty decent, but it's their shakes that push it to the 3-star marker. if you're ever in bloomington, stop by the big, black and white sign and order some grub....and be sure to order a pop to wash it all down. ~cheers
