Well... I haven't really been here in over 10 years. I remember as a kid coming here when it was less than 5 tables and before they "expanded"the dining area. It's come a long way since then. Just saying that I came to this restaurant after a 12 hour drive from Virginia to eat some good Chinese food says a lot. The trip was well worth it. Obviously I didn't come to Chicago just for Fu Yuan... but I'm glad I came. My table ordered jajjangmyun, jahm-pong, and kahm-puungi. I personally had the jajjangmyun. It was very good. But what I really remember from the past was the kahm-puungi. This is a "sesame chicken" style of chicken that is spicy. It's kind of like General Tso's but so much better. I don't know if they still have it but if they do, ask for it "bone-in" style. I remember that being amazing. Anyway, it may just be nostalgia, but it was a good place to have a good lunch/dinner.

The best Chinese food in the area without a doubt. My problem is I Just cant order anything other than the moo goo, always incredible! But Miss Eastwood just loves her hung su chicken, and little E. Thoroughly enjoyed her kung po chicken. All the soups have fantastic flavors, hot and sour, egg drop and treat yourself to some sizzling rice soup. Before I finish with my extra long diatribe I want to say in closing........Fried rice , never had better.

Consistent good food and kind service. Spicy hot and sour soup is without a doubt the best I've ever had.

Best food ever! Staff is so nice and eager to please.

The service is good and clean. The food I've had better. I tried the korean style jjampong and jjajang with kampoongki. The kampoongki was really good but the noodles had a lack of taste to it.

I tried to order orange chicken and the guy said something about them not deep frying chicken. Made me order the sweet and sour chicken which was utterly horrible. It tasted worse than chicken mcnugguts at McDonalds. You would think an old Chinese place in downtown Wheaton wold be so much better. At least the inside

I get the Beef and Broccoli every time at every Chinese food place I go. This is the first one I've felt compelled to yelp about. Like other reviews I 100% agree, Super Fresh taste. Sauce is light and flavorful, the beef is a better quality then most and the vegetables still have snap. Fu Yuan has become my go-to Chinese spot. The price might be a dollar higher then other places but well worth it for the quality of food. Could have 5 stars if they stepped up the interior.

I have been coming here for 10 years. This place is the real deal. The food is fresh, fresh, fresh and the sauces are excellent. The lunch specials are great and very reasonably priced. Not a fancy place but very clean and the food is great. Every time I am there, half the customers are speaking Chinese or Korean. That is a good sign to me.

Great food, great service, and friendly prices. Have been eating at this restaurant for over 15 years. The ingredients are fresh and the food is always awesome. Sometimes they are short handed on servers but be patient, it's worth the wait. Parking is great and there are plenty to do in the area within walking distance. They have lunch specials, dinner specials and the best soups ever. You can't go wrong with this place.

Fu Yuan is a small chinese restaurant located in downtown Wheaton. It seems as if they've been around forever! I've been here a few times. I remember having the chicken fried rice, as well as moo goo gai pan on another occasion. Good Egg Drop Soup! The prices are fair, the food has flavor, and it doesn't feel as Americanized as other Chinese restaurants in the area. They must be doing something right, because they have been around forever! A nice, quiet spot to dine in downtown Wheaton. If you are looking for good Asian food, I would recommend here or Pad Thai Etc. down the road. I've never been to Wok N Fire, so I cannot comment on if they are on the same level.

This place is GREAT!!!! After ordering, I decided to just hang out and chat with an older gentleman that was waiting for his food as well. We were both offered hot tea (on the house) on a freezing cold and snowy day. Our wait was very brief and the tea made the time pass well. The food tasted very fresh and there was a lot of it. I ordered the Seafood Jam Bong and the Chicken Lo Mein with pan seared noodles. Both were fantastic. Fairly priced. I will absolutely come back.

Fresh. We had chicken chow mein and General chicken. Fast friendly service. Hot tea. Water refilled. Plenty of leftovers they boxed up for us. Reasonable at $22 plus tip. We will be back.

i have been splurging on this place as of recently. maybe the food gods are trying to tell me to make room in my food budget for this place. the only thing i get for takeout is: shrimp and veggies plain fried rice - rice that is fried with egg, onion, and carrots. yummy for my tummy.....and your tummy too.

We have gone here for over ten years. Tonight they gave us the wrong food for the first time. We paid for moo shoo pork and got a second chicken dish. Disappointing.

  • Nicole L.

I'm not feeling this place anymore. The Kung Pao chicken wasn't spicy whatsoever and contained mushrooms which were not welcome on my plate. The Mongolian beef was fatty/chewy although the flavor was good so if I did order again I'd get Mongolian chicken instead. The garlic chicken was ok. Nothing was bad per se, just blah.

Who knew there would be such a treasure of authentic Korean-style Chinese food so close to Wheaton's campus? Tip - if you're looking for the authentic stuff, only order off the back of the menu (which is written in Chinese and Korean with some rudimentary, sometimes unhelpful transliterations and translations. I heard our waiter speaking both Korean and Mandarin to customers -- very good sign! Tang su yuk (sweet and sour beef) - very good (had the beef though they also offered pork) Seafood jajyangmyun - very good pork jajyangmyun - OK. i ate some leftovers later and they were tastier... maybe the sauce needed to simmer longer? ro ji something (spicy chicken) - delicious pork fried rice - excellent. absolutely delicious, tasty, juicy pork in between well separated, fluffy kernels of fried rice. kimchi - meh. maybe i'm just not a fan of this style of shredded (western) cabbage smothered in chili sauce. but it was free so i shouldn't complain. Again, I think we were given this because we ordered the real stuff. free rice cake dessert - pretty tasty. and free! by this point we were pretty full! service - slow but very friendly and helpful. the one server refilled tea as needed and was great at suggesting things once he figured out we were there for the authentic stuff. ambience - not bad. seemed very clean. plain and simple. combination of booths and table seating. price and portions - i don't know what others are talking about. entrees and noodle dishes are mostly under $10 with some of the nicer meat entrees running up to $12-16. if you go family style, you can easily get away with less than one dish per person (e.g., 4 dishes between 5 people) and still have plenty to eat and end up spending right around $10-$12 per person incl. tax and tip. A fantastic find in the heart of downtown Wheaton for those looking for authentic Korean-style Chinese food. Thanks Yelp! Reviewers who complain that it is Americanized Chinese - must not have bothered to look at the back of the menu which is all authentic. Those who complain it is neither Korean nor Chinese - Korean-style Chinese food is a real authentic cuisine style (really a variant of Shandong style Chinese cuisine)... folks who actually know about Chinese food OR Korean food would both know this.

This is the only place I have been able to find Korean Chinese food. The jjajungmyun was delicious! I have no idea how they make it (if it's actually hand-tossed like in Korea), but it tasted like the real thing. The only sad part was that the prices are so high that I couldn't get the typical jjajungmyun/tang su yuk combo. Next time... maybe I'll splurge. :) I got it to-go, so I can't comment too much on the service. We didn't call ahead since we wanted to get a good look at the menu, so we waited 30 minutes for our food at the restaurant... It wasn't too bad though, and I think worth the wait since they're the only place I know with Korean Chinese food! Also, they gave me kimchi relish/slaw for free. Yummm...

I have been going to this place for over a decade - pushing two decades soon. Before my time, they used to be a smaller hole in the wall with strictly take out, which has since been expanded to the sit-in it is today. This is a review for their Korean-Chinese food. The owners are Chinese, yes, but they grew up in Korea and so they speak perfect Korean and cook the most fantastic Korean-Chinese food. Great jja jang myun and jjambbong, which are the only two dishes we eat here anyways. The kkampoongi is not too fantastic, so don't expect too much when you order that. I can't really speak for the Chinese food. It's all very standard American-Chinese food. Mushu pork is good as is the Mongolian beef.

One of the best Chinese restaurants in the western suburbs. The decor is very plain but the food is great.

  • James K.

This is the best Korean-Chinese restaurant in western suburbs. Only down side is that if you've a big order, it could take a while. But they do take pre-orders. My favorite is Pork TagSuYuk with sauce on the side.

Good service. Tried Jjajangmyeon. Small portion for $9, noodles were way to soggy. Definitely not Korean standard jjajangmyeon, but good enough if you're craving it.

It is refreshing to see a restaurant with Chinese-Korean food in Downtown Wheaton. Though I admit I've had better, this is a great restaurant to dine in. I came on a Tuesday night and there was plenty of seating. The servers were courteous and attentive, and got our orders in quickly. The food did take a good amount of time to come out, but it wasn't anything to complain about. The food was on point and fulfilled the cravings that I had for this style of cuisine. The tangsuyuk (sweet and sour beef) was crispy and held quality flavors. The overall taste of the jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) that I ordered was a bit bland, but very satisfying. I cleaned out all of my plates and bowls, and felt good about it. With a reasonable price and food that gave me a taste of home in California, Fu Yuan is a restaurant that I would definitely recommend for this style of cuisine.

Wow...My wife remembered this place being so good when she was younger so we decided to order it for carryout. No online menu so just had to guess what to order and prices. Brought food home..probably worse Chinese I have ever had, fried rice reminds me of Panda Express, sweet and sour chicken, smallest chicken breast ever, and not 100% but pretty sure egg rolls are frozen and fried. Will never go hear again and we ended up throwing it all out and making a frozen pizza. $40 I will never see again.

  • Wendy H.

The food here is really good, made with the freshest available ingredients. They have awesome menu, as some of the dishes are fusion dishes- korean chinese. The price is reasonable considering you walk away with loads of leftovers. It is the best chinese place, and although it may look a little run down on the outside, they will make you the best chinese food you'll have ever tasted. The service is on the slow side, as it is a family run restaurant, but I think it is the wait that makes the food taste even better :) This is my favorite all time to go for chinese food

Fantastic little place! I avoided it for the longest time because it seemed like just a hole in the wall restaurant (even though those are usually the best). I was really skeptical, the place is small and old it looks like it's the same size as the Dairy Queen from the outside. But the food is amazing, seriously. I've never gotten anything from here I didn't like. The vegetables are always fresh and the tea is always hot. The prices are very reasonable and you get a lot of food. They seem to get a lot of take out orders here too, and there are always at least a handful of patrons inside. My favorite dish would have to be the vegetable fried rice. Always good never waivers on quality. And you can always ask for no MSG in meat dishes which is a good thing right? The only downside is service is a little slow so don't eat in and be in a hurry. Its a tag team duo in the restaurant which I am guessing are the owners. They are as nice as can be and really try their best to make you happy! It's worth it though I promise! Also beware that in the summer the air isn't always on, sometimes just the fan with the door open.

Haven't been here in a while! Tried to go last night, but it was really crowded and loud, which stinks because this place is really, really enjoyable because it is so quiet and serene. I will review from my previous experience. They bring tea, which is awesome. I ordered chicken fried rice. I hope in the future to try the Kung Pao chicken. This place had one lady serving as the host/waitress on a Friday night, and it was really loud, because there were some obnoxious kids. Hopefully I can make it back soon!

I am extremely picky about Chinese Food and where I eat. I am also originally from Los Angeles where there are restaurants on ever corner where there are several variations of Chinese food. This place by far is my favorite in this area and I am here on a regular basis. It is also the only place that I know of which serves a Korean version of Chinese food. The food is always fresh and cooked well. The two people who run this place are always polite and friendly. I highly RECOMMEND this place and tell everyone I know to eat here. Ps - TO THE HATERS - Sorry but not every place you go is an all you can eat buffet. Next time stick to Ground Round.

So anyone who reads my reviews knows I'm in search of decent Asian cuisine out here in the west burbs. And if you don't read my reviews then perhaps you should. Anyhoo. Our buddy Vince was coming over to watch some movies and hang out. He lives in Wheaton, us in Lisle so he was going to grab the grub from this Fu Yuan place nearby. Skeptically, and rightfully so, I assumed it would be more of the same. Weak, cookie-cutter food trying to pass itself off as Chinese. 7pm arrives, as does Vince, and we're ready to watch "Love At Stake" and eat. I ordered the Mongolian Beef, my wife the Lemon Chicken. I was expecting, at best, something edible. So I open the box and take a bite. And another. And a third. And dear baby Buddha was I happy. I wept, fell to the floor and violently shook from happiness. The Mongolian Beef, while not spicy, was sweet and succulent. Delicious, fragrant, had those crispy rice noodles... not too many scallions. My god, everything I could want from a Mongolian Beef. I ate it slowly, purposefully. I wanted to savor every bite. I even left a little bit to finish late that night... it was that good. My wife's Lemon Chicken was alright as well. I'm not a huge lemon guy so I can't say it was great. But overall I love this place. I'm ordering again for sure. With Mongo Beef like that I have to.

I love this place---too bad they put ONION in everything they cook---I have an allergy to onions...so I either can't have alot of the delicious items on the menu-or have to ask to hold them. The food is plenty and good. Just hold the onion. LOL.

Fu Yuan is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the area! The mister and I come often, but lately we've only had time for take out. When you dine in make sure you allow plenty of time because there are only 2 people working the floor most of the time. They are a bit slow, but they also have a lot of take out orders to handle. The food is definitely worth the wait. My husband loves the Kung Pao Chicken and I love ordering the Schezwan Chicken. On occasion we'll order an appetizer, edamame or crab rangoon which are decent. They serve soup with their lunch/dinner specials and they are both delicious: hot & sour and egg drop soup.

OK, so I have been coming here for several years, and have formed some strong opinions about Fu Yuan. Generally, it is one of the places I prefer to go to when I am craving Chinese in this area. In fact, it's probably my top choice. I'm not saying there isn't better Chinese out there...I am saying that I get Chinese food in the Wheaton/Glen Ellyn area about two-three times per year, know what I like here, and just don't venture out to a potentially questionable new place when I know I can get what I like here. Long intro over, lets continue. My favorite thing here is the Twice Cooked Pork. It is always really delicious...really, really delicious. If you like spicy, you will need to order it extra spicy. A few other dishes I have had here are fine, especially ones containing pork or beef. The vegetable based dishes, even ones like beef and broccoli, can be disappointing. It has long been accepted by me that most green vegetables here will be overcooked and on the soggy side. Now, I love my veggies raw and crunchy, so maybe it's just my personal opinion that they tend to be soggy...but to me, they do. Egg rolls aren't terribly good, but the fried rice is. Hot and Sour soup is average - not great, not bad.

Fu Yuan is as good as it gets! I grew up in Wheaton and this is the one and only place in and around Wheaton that my family and I have ever gone for chinese. (25+ years!!) I compare all Chinese food to what they serve at Fu Yuan and nothing seems to hold a candle to them. No joke. We just moved out to Lombard and while that isn't too far from Wheaton..we are on the search for some great Chinese food in our area and everything we have tried is terrible....because of course I am expecting the deliciousness that I grew up on! Anyways! SO worth it- 5 stars all the way. Enjoy~!!

My husband have been coming here for years and love to food. Even if it takes a little longer when they are busy, it's totally worth the wait!! I wished we still lived down the street! I love them and this is the only place we go for Chinese food.

  • Justin L.

Mediocre place and I'm not sure we should call it Chinese. Yes it's Chinese food and yes it's Korean food. As far as I could tell most everyone seemed Korean, not Chinese. It doesn't hurt the quality of the food, but... what's the point? If I want sit down Chinese food I'd like some more authentic style Chinese. If I want Korean food I'd rather go somewhere with a full Korean menu. It just doesn't seem to satisfy when it comes down to any cravings. The venue and service. The interior is getting a bit aged, but it's well maintained and it's not always well lit. The service isn't great either, but the last two visits I've stuck to take out only to avoid this. Overall, edible, but worth a rare visit and even then I'd stick to take out.

Par NONE..this is the BEST Chinese food I've ever had. Everything is so fresh and tasty. The owners are super sweet, they always remember my order and even add a little extra of the items I love. I've brought loads of people here and have never once heard a complaint so if you're in the mood for some AMAZING Chinese food GO THERE NOW!!! Don't walk, RUN! You'll thank me :]

Pros: 1. Tried 2 dishes, Mu Shu Beef and Chicken fried rice. Both were hella delicious! 2. The service area appeared clean under the dim lights. 3. Standard pricing. We only order 2 entrées and total came out to $21 including tip. Cons: 1. Hella slow service. Actually no service depending on where you sit. We came here on a Sat. night. Only 2 people working. The place was 1/4 full. We sat by the door and received absolutely no service the rest of the night after receiving our food. We had to go up to the server every time we needed something. 2. Decor could be updated or more inviting. 3. Loud. Summary: This place is better for take out. That's what most people that came in there did.

The fried rice that comes with a lunch - light, flavourful, and sprinkled with green onions and yellow bits of egg - it is the most beautiful fried rice I've seen at any Chinese restaurant. The lunch special is affordable. BUT don't order the pot-stickers - the price is ridiculous and they are awful - apparently deep-fried and bland - horrible bits of pork with what appeared to be TAPIOCA beads as filler (I hope.) Worse still, they cost almost as much as the meal! For six of these puffs of garbage! The price I was charged was also a dollar more than on the menu! Disgusted, I paid the bill and walked out. This is my third visit. I will never return.

Wow. I'm really surprised by these reviews. I've been to Fu Yuans many times over the years, and the food and service have always been less than average. This time, I ordered take out. Mongolian beef and orange chicken. Both were inedible and nothing like what I was expecting. I never imagined Chinese food could actually be badly prepared and mace, coming from a place that has been in business for so long. By far the worst Chinese food I've ever had, and I will not be coming back. I'm not even Chinese and I could make better Mongolian beef and orange chicken than them. The sauces were basically water, and the orange chicken wasn't even fried! It was chicken in a water sauce that had no flavor! Disgusting doesn't even sum it up.

Good food, good prices! It is never too busy in here, which I always enjoy. I just wish I didn't live so far from it, because when I did live near, I was here at least once a week. Damn those gas prices! Overall- Cleanliness: A Food: A Presentation: A Prices: A Service: A ---------------------- Grade- A

Great little joint! Went there with my girl & her son. Good place to go for a quick bite to eat. Servers are fast, food is delicious. Affordable dinner menu. I'd recommend the garlic chicken. Not a fancy place but more of a neighborhood feel.

Terrible Terrible Terrible! Sorry, I have nothing nice to say about this place. One star is the lowest I could rate it. I read all the reviews before going and thought why not give it a try. Well, upon arriving, there was a group of 30+ people leaving....this was a good sign at first...no long wait for food, and it must be good since there is a huge group of people...gosh was I wrong!! The table of 30+ people was never cleared off the ENTIRE time we were there! I mean come on!! Disgusting to sit through an entire meal and have someone else's food just staring at you. Just makes you think of what the kitchen looks like...yuck! The food was terrible. Both my husband and I have stomach aches and the kids didn't even eat their sweet and sour chicken...which was WAY over fried. There was hardly anyone there and yet it took forever to get served. The servers werent friendly at all either. This is my first rating on Yelp and I'm sorry that it has to be a bad one...but I really would never set foot in that place again.

We went here for the korean-chinese menu, so that's all this review will cover. I got the impression that this place is actually run by Chinese folks who were raised in Korea -- in any case, they speak both Korean and Chinese. We got the usual suspects: jajangmyun, jjampong, and tangsuyuk. It was all very nice though not outstanding. The noodles were decent. The jajangmyun sauce was good and had some nice extra bits of chicken (or pork?) and vegetables in it (I always have to add salt); also notable acc. to my dining companions was the addition of shrimp to the jajangmyun. I only had a little taste of the jjampong, but it looked very good. The tangsuyuk was as it always seems to be -- sort of gross but somehow delicious and hard to resist. The people were really nice, and they served us the onion and black bean sauce appetizer that is standard at korean-chinese restaurants. I grabbed a takeout menu on my way out and it appears that the korean stuff isn't on that menu. I guess it's sort of a secret or something. Good solid korean-chinese food if you're in the area and have got the craving.

I cannot believe I've never yelp'd about Fu Yuan. I've been a fan for a long, long time...over 10 years! My little sister is also a fan & when we have a slumber party we usually treat ourselves to some take out from this little diamond in the rough. The place is on the small side which is the complete opposite of the portions they dish out. We often have leftovers and this yelper loves that. Our favs are the sesame chicken, fried rice, schezuan chicken, potstickers & crab rangoon....or pretty much anything fried (obviously...duh). They also have lunch specials Mon-Fri which are very reasonable and not skimpy. Specials are served with fried rice & and eggroll and in the $6 range if I remember correctly. Sadly, I do not work close enough to take advantage of these specials anymore... The service has always been great. The same family has owned this restaurant for years and they are super friendly & accomodating. If you are looking for an affordable, tasty meal...look no further!

I've driven by this place alot but never thought much of it. It's a long/narrow structure (with the entrance being the short side) and a dining area that runs 2/3rds of the way back. It's clean and nicely decorated. I came in with a friend on a saturday night. Service was a tad slow but It wasn't anything to worry about. Seems like the service staff is just the owners, husband and wife. (This is a guess on my part). Anyways, the menu isn't overwhelming but covers all the standard dishes. The lunch/dinner meal combos are a great value. For under $10, price varies among dishes, you get your entree + rice + soup. We ordered crab rangoon as an appetizer and each of us had an entree. All in we got out of there just over $30 including tip. Awesome deal. Now the info you're wonering about the most: the food. It was excellent. It must be noted the food (mongolian beef and shrimp+veg) was flavorful and fresh! No excessive oils or sauces like you find in other chinese restaurants. I was pleasantly surprised since oily/greasy chinese food is typically the norm. You won't find a rare dish or crazy awesome service.... just tasty food with good service at a great price. Highly recommended.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
