OOOhhhh! "Try the Chicken George they said!" "Ohhh You'll just love it! The Chicken George is the best around, " they said. "Make sure you get Jan's sauce!" Against my better judgement I did just that. Chicken George and Fried Shrimp. When the Chicken and Shrimp arrived I was a little puzzled, you see. Because I had thought Chicken George was some sort of fancy preparation that was sort of a local signature. It's not. It's fried chicken fingers basically that are lightly breaded instead of heavily breaded. Jan's sauce is basically mayo, honey mustard and i think vinegar mixed together. "Well, Mr. Hot Shot from Cal-I-FOR-nia. We can't please everyone. This is good ol' midwestern cookin here, doncha know!" I looked down at my plate a little in dismay. I thought I had been punk'd. This must be a joke, right? A signature dish that is famous for three counties can't just be chicken fingers? Sad to say that is the case. In realistic terms I doubt anyone from either coast will truly appreciate the Chicken George. It's just not good. Take heart Candle Light Inn, you are not with out redemption. The bread sticks here are warm, amazing beacons of light in a dark and deep fried world of food boredom.

There is only one reason to go here, and that is for the Chicken George with Jan's sauce. It is PHENOMENAL and I don't like chicken strips. Who really cares what else is on the menu? :) Don't go here if you're a veggie. You'll be disappointed. If you plan on eating something else, well... it's probably the best restaurant in town. Which means it gets to be overpriced. Kids love the Kiddie Cocktails. Always been a kid-friendly place.

They've been around since 1967- you don't stay in business that long unless you have something to offer. Here it is "Chicken George" You need to try it at least once. We have family in the area and eat here once every couple of years, there are now two other places in the area, so they must be doing something right, I think it is one of the best places you are going to find in Western Illinois.

Definitely not my first choice. I really don't care for much on the menu except for steak and fries, and if you just want steak, you might as well just go to a steak house. It'll be the same price but better steak quality. The only praise worthy thing they have are their fries, which are absolutely delicious. It's cozy inside and service isn't overly amazing, it's average.

This place is also a sterling family vacation staple for my mom and I. As I grew up I got hooked on the chicken george. They are the best chicken fingers I have every had and trust me, as a kid I had many chicken fingers. Now that I am an adult I have stepped up to the 1/2 chicken plate. I am wiser now and I get something that allows me to have leftovers. The chicken is so moist and has delicious flavor. On top of that it comes with a salad and super delicious breadstick. If you are looking for something exciting and out of the norm this place offers a lot of fried stuff like fried mushrooms, fried cauliflower, fried pickles and frog legs.

The Chicken George sauce is good but we've tried quite a few other items and just can't seem to find much else we like.

This will be a straight forward review of the famous "Chicken George with Jan sauce". The chicken was just chicken tenders which were very stringy and the sauce did not impress at all. It tastes like watery, over sweetened mayonnaise ". Everyone says to try it at the Rock Falls location, but I say if you can't keep quality consistent in your few branches, then you won't get my repeat business.

A favorite for the locals. The service was fine but I thought the prices were high for sandwiches and burgers. Everything was extra greasy. Not for me.

They have a decent selection of food. Chicken George is the only dish they serve that really stands out from other places in town. You can find almost everything on their menu a little cheaper and at the same quality at other places. But their wait staff is friendly. Overall it's not my go to restaurant but I like going there every once in awhile for their amazing fried pickles. But if you have never been to candlelight I would suggest stopping in at least once. It's worth a visit I promise.

If you want to eat healthy this is the place to eat - try grilled lemon pepper chicken George w/ steamed broccoli !!! Or cedar plank salmon

A sterling staple. My longtime friend brought me to his hometown to show me good ol Sterling, IL. Or as most would see it "any town USA." Candlelight Inn is like a combo of KFC and Bob Evans. Doesn't really say much about health conscious food but it serves a need in the area I suppose. Chicken George is the bucket of Chicken with their sauces. Which are actually pretty decent. For me though, it's just another Chicken shop. For Sterling though, it is a tradition.

I love this place. Chicken George and Jan Sauce. Yummy. Everytime I come home to visit my family I come here or the one in Rock Falls. Rock Falls has bread sticks! I also used to work here. Good manager Matt Prescott. He was active and cared about his employees. I cant wait to have the food again. Buffalo George is also great. I am sure there is not a person in Sterling IL or even Rock Falls that has not been here at least once. It is a tradition. They also have a loft for parties.

Candlelight is a very well know place in sterling. I've good there since i was a kid. Love the food though some of the waitresses can be snobby. Chicken George is the shiz.

This is a local staple and the main draw is the Chicken George with Jan's sauce. I've loved it for years and it is definitely a must when I'm back in the area. They now have (well have for quite a while) a Rock Falls location, which means locals don't have to drive "all the way over to Sterling" :) They have fairly good American food in general. But once you have chicken strips at any major chain (Chili's, etc.) with a honey mustard sauce, you are pretty much there on Chicken George and Jan's sauce. So as for a "MUST" it's not... unless you're returning and wax nostalgic, which I think most people do (including me).

I've been here twice while visiting Gramma, and for the price I don't really think this place is worth it. I know the midwest is not particularly known for its seafood, yet still I order it. In order to mitigate some of that disappointment on my latest visit to the Candlelight, I ordered a combo plate that came with some broiled shrimp (made "fancy" by the votive that kept my dippin' butter warm) and a heaping pile of the "famous" Chicken George. Against my vegeterian tendencies, I wanted to see what all the buzz was about. Apparently the dipping sauce is where it's at. Pardon my blaspheme, but I respectfully disagree. I believe that it's comprised of mayonaise, vinegar, and corn syrup. Icky, icky, and icky. Give me a squirt of honey mustard any day. The chicken tenders were fine, if you're into that, but I guess I'm not. I love eating where the locals eat when I visit new places, so I'm glad I tried this place--and its signature dish--but I'd prefer the Parkway or Applebees if given a choice. Service was a bit on the slow side, but that could just be the city girl in me talking . . . And I know the name of the joint was Candlelight--and trust me when I say that I'm a big fan of low lighting--but I could hardly see my meal in front of me. A little illumination, please!
