Incredibly delicious! Their sweetbread sandwiches melt in your mouth. They have plenty of options from extra meat to veggie sandwiches and salads. They are always stocked up on Ben and Jerry's ice cream and Jones Soda. This particular restaurant gets extremely busy on the lunch hour. If you can, I suggest ordering ahead or waiting a bit til the rush is over.

Best sub in the area. 10 out of 10 times I will choose this place over any chain. Their roast beef on sweet bread is one of the best sandwiches I've had. It's piled high with delicious meat. And, the chicken marinara has fresh chicken and the marinara has good flavor. But, the brownies are what I come back for. They are gooey and made in house.

Head West is one of the few things I miss about living in Springfield (horseshoes being one of the others!) Their sweet bread is amazing, and the sandwiches are so big I can usually get two meals out of one. In high school I would make the 20 min. drive from my parents house to the Jefferson store (at that point it was the only one) almost every Saturday. Since moving from springfield I've lived in Peoria, St. Louis and now florida, and have yet to come close to finding sandwiches as good as they have here. Love the hippy atmosphere, love the food, miss it like crazy!

LOVE these subs!!! You must get the sweet bread. The staff at the Jefferson location are usually "out of it" if you know what I mean (they're all hippies) but its worth the extra wait!!

This is the original Head West. Great sandwiches - the sweet bread is amazing! Also, they serve Ben & Jerry's by the pint. But beware of delivery - they're slow & unreliable - so just head to the store.

My wife and I were headed back home to TN from the Peoria area and stopped at an Springfield exit off I-55 for a Subway. When we located the building I noticed this Head West Sub Stop about 100 feet from Subway so I said to my wife, What the heck, we know what Subway has, let's look to see what this place has for vegetarian subs. I went inside to look at the menu and was pleasantly surprised to see not only a veggie sub BUT ALSO a vegetarian turkey and vegetarian ham sub. I chose the vegetarian ham sub for my wife and I to split, plus two drinks. The sub turned out to be perfect. Thank you for another option than Subway for vegetarians in the Springfield area.

These are pretty awesome sub's. I had the turkey and ham with pepper jack. The sweet bread is pretty amazing. This was my first time here. Next time I will get a half sandwich. The full size was just too much. The turkey and ham was a good quality, not like what you would get at Subway. They have Coke, not Pepsi, which made me happy. As a bonus, they had Cherry Coke. It's not a particularly clean restaurant- it's definitely seen more bong water than mop water. It's not gross, just not particularly clean. I'd totally go back again. Yummy.

I got the Italian sub and was a little surprised at how well the sweet bread went with a sandwich like that. My only complaint is that seating is pretty limited.

Food was OK. Staff was friendly. Just don't look at the dining area. Peeling paint, and it feels like it's been decades since last time place was painted or fixed up.

Cute, friendly sandwich shop in Springfield. The sandwich was fairly standard though.

Love the hippie vibe here!!! Sandwiches were pretty good. I got a toasted turkey and cheddar with some veggies on the sweet bread, nom! The portion was huge, I probably would have been fine with a half sandwich. What really got me here was the brownies...wow they were homemade and amazing. I wanna try their soup or salad next time too, they looked really good as well.

Whoa. Wanted to check this place out but should have thought twice after reading the customer service reviews. The guy answering the phone for orders CLEARLY doesn't want to be working there. I couldn't even get through the order. I mean really, who doesn't know that the sandwiches featured at this establishment are also called "HOAGIES" or subs depending on where you order them. Head West obviously has a complete moron employed downtown that is costing them business.

When visiting Springfield we were in search of a healthy option outside of the normal hamburgers and fries ring and found Head West. After reading the reviews we decided to give it a try. First Impression: it was just like most peoples review, a little hippie but not anything I would worry about. I liked that there were 2 in uniform military personnel at a table eating their lunch. Both my wife and I decided on the pick two and got a Salad and Sandwich, she got a turkey and I got a roast beef sandwich. I noticed that they had some music playing and that the guy making our sandwiches and salads couldn't hear us unless we really raised our voices. I had to repeat myself about 5 times to have him hear my order. He also seemed pretty inattentive and was pretty much rushing through everything even though we were the only ones in line. It was also a little off putting that I couldn't see the sandwich being made because the counter was so ridiculously high. I personally like the other two popular sandwich shops because I can see that ingredients and how they are making the sandwich. Either way we got our food and it was pretty good, not the best I have had or mind blowing in any way. The salad was good but I had to ask for dressing which was just odd. Also some of the lettuce on the sandwich and salad was on the verge of going bad, it was darkening and was a little unappetizing, but it was not a huge deal but I wondered how often the lettuce was changed out. All in all it was a decent amount of food for a decent price but I don't expect to be back in Springfield anytime soon to test this place out again.

I had fabulous experience here! It was absolutely delicious. I am a sandwich lover and this place has set the new standard for me. Loved it. L-O-V-E. Oh, and I had a reuben sub that was mmmmmhhmmmnnnn all the way to the last nibble.

This is a small business, so you might need to wait when ordering. The food alone earns a 5; however, I gave them a 4 based on attention to detail in the eating area. The prices are good. When ordering, make sure you know ALL sandwiches come with their basics unless you state otherwise. We didn't realize this and they easily remade our sandwich, but it would have been better if we had realized this when ordering. Hubby and I shared a chicken salad sandwich and chips and we had plenty to eat. There was not anyone wiping tables, just 3 guys working the counter. I would have appreciated having napkins available for customers to access on their own. We would definitely stop in again if we were in the area.

Damn hippies...damn beautiful and delicious sandwich making hippies. Homemade bread, generous portions (not NYC deli mountains of meat but still very good). Could encounter a wait at the counter, but you'll be glad you did. $8 for my rueben and a drink. If the fire department and local construction crew that were there trust them, why shouldn't you?

I live one block from a Subway, less than 5 minutes from a Quiznos and almost 10 minutes from this Head West. I choose Head West almost every time. Let's start with the atmosphere. You walk in and it just screams HIPPY. From the art on the walls to the music. It is very psychedelic. The store is small with a few seats. If Penny Lane sold sandwiches... The staff is great too. They know the product. They even add to the decor. Every time I go there, there is at least 4 guys behind the counter making sandwiches. All but one look like hippies (and I'm sure some might be high). But who am I to judge a book by its cover. They are fast and friendly. That's all that counts. The food is excellent. The sandwiches are classic ingredients combined in great ways. My favorite is the pastrami and provolone. The meat is good and the veggies are fresh. The bread is special. Always get the sweet bread. I could live on HW sweet bread and be happy. They have Coke dispenser but I always get a Jones Soda (they have em in glass bottles). They have organic brownies that I have yet to try as well as single serving bags of chips. They also have Odwalla (if you're into that). The price is great. It is on par with other sub shops like Quiznos but a bit more than Subway. However, these are among the bigger and most filling sandwiches you'll find. I can barely finish one and many people I know can't even eat half. A Springfield staple that you won't find on the tourist list. If you visit Springfield, you can go to D'arcy's, Joe Roger's, Charlie Parker's and all those places. However, you must go to Head West.

This place is overrated! The bread falls apart every time I eat one of their sandwiches. Then I'm left with nothing but a mess. Give me Jimmy John's anyday!

Best sandwich on the planet. Ive driven over an hour just to have one of their sandwiches and that was one of the best decisions Ive ever made.

delish hummus sammy and ravioli soup. friendly staff. i reserve 5 stars for getting my socks knocked off. if your choice is subway/quiznos/etc vs head west, duh.

Sandwiches are very good, but avoid this place like the plague if it's busy. When I've gone in and it's slow, everything is fine.. but when it's crowded, the place is so inefficiently run, there's really no telling what you're going to get. Place isn't well managed and the workers all seem to have an incredibly short attention span, so the orders are normally screwed up and the place is pure chaos if they're dealing with a rush. Workers also can be pretty off putting when they're stressed.

They're sandwiches. They're good. If you need one, you should come here. I don't understand what people are raving about -- but there is certainly nothing to complain about either. For some reason, I think if you smoked something funny it would make the sandwiches a wondrous magical treat.

This really was as good as everything I read and heard. One of the few "must try" places in Springfield.

Wow! What a Springfield gem. Thanks Brewhaus for suggesting This delicious delivering deli. Their sandwiches had fresh, delicious cuts of meat piled high. Awesome pickles and onions and dressing. But the best part is the fresh, flavorful sweetbread. My mouth is still watering.

Love the subs, service could be much better... I run a call center and while I understand being busy even if you put someone on hold you must go back and let them know you are still alive... I called back because I thought we got disconnected and they didnt even say anything. Too bad since we love to support locally owned places, but there has to be a better system for one of the "best sub" places in town. I do agree the subs rock though!

Mmmm...fresh homemade bread, lots of good super thinly sliced turkey, delicious thick slices of sour pickles - toasted with pepper jack cheese. Yeah, I'm a fan.

Sandwiches were pretty good and practically weigh a pound. However when I had mine toasted it still had a lot of cold spots.

I had to work in Springfield for a month. I wish there was a Head West in Chicago. These subs are the bomb-dot-com
