The carne asada is the best I've had in Rockford. It is seasoned to perfection and very tender and the portion is huge. Another cool thing is the fresh avacado slices they put on the plate, that's a nice delicious touch. The service was great and the food came out faster than we thought it would....definitely going back to try some of the other dishes.

Best tacos in town. Al pastor is the best taco you can get there. I wish they would deliver. I would order a lot more.

Probably one of the best places to get Mexican food in Rockford. Tried Los for the first time a couple months ago after my boyfriend kept suggesting it and I'm always craving to go back. The pork tacos are definitely my favorite item off the menu. Never go without getting them. Horchata is also the best here. Always coming back.

Staff is incredibly polite especially since they are open late and deal with the drunks leaving downtown after bar close. I stick with chorizo and it's amazing... on tacos, in a burrito, or on a torta. Tried chicken once and it was pretty bland. My boyfriend loves the al pastor tacos or the Carne asada burrito. Very authentic taqueria great for dine in or carryout.

I used to like this restaurant, but I had a very bad experience here today. A friend & I ordered carry out. She went to go pick it up. We ordered a large guacamole with no onions & it was the TINIEST (like a side order) order of guacamole I have ever gotten! And it was full of onions! We ordered some cream also we ordered sour cream also which was not in our bag, of course we didn't notice until she got back. We called & she went to go pick up the missing sour cream & the new guacamole. She got there & they expected her to pay again! They were very rude to her, I called to complain & the woman I spoke to kept talking over me & even yelled at me! I will never order food at Los Portales again!

I ordered a shrimp cocktail and 2 sopes. The cook reached into the bag of shrimp without washing his hands or wearing gloves (thus, contaminating the entire bag of shrimp). He then scooped out an avocado with that same dirty gloveless hand (in particular, his index and middle finger). He then wiped that hand on his pants and proceeded to make the rest of my order (reaching into the cheese, tomato & cabbage containers.....all with the same dirty gloveless hand). I told him that I was not going to eat that - and to wash his hands, put on some gloves & make me a new order. He refused. I asked for my money back.....never to return. Disgusting!!!

Great place for authentic Mexican food, the best al Pastor tacos in Rockford. I've been a regular here for many years and they never disappoint me. Stop in for lunch and get a complimently bowl of chicken soup with your order if they haven't run out. Open late and open early on weekends for breakfast which is great also. The guacamole has a nice texture, not over blended but slightly chunky.

One of my favorite places to eat. Cheap, authentic, and open super late so it's perfect when you're coming home from the bars downtown. Put an egg in your burrito and get a few pork tamales and you're set.

The only time I've been to Los Portales has been after bartime - but would definitely go any other time as well if I were in the area. The place can get a little crazy around then given the area and the time of day & the nature of the patrons, but that won't stop me from going in, sitting down & pigging out. The food has always been good - sometimes a little slow when they're busy but that's understandable - reasonable in price. Guac and salsas are very good. I've had everything from the tacos to the carne asada dinner and have always been impressed. Will definitely return!

Best authentic Mexican in town. They offer all the standard beef, pork and chicken dishes and they do them well, but they also have beef tongue, brain and tripe dishes . I have yet to try the menudo, but the tongue burrito is my favorite.

Open late for after bar tacos. They are absolutely fantastic. Very authentic. You must try the pork tacos with cilantro and onion. Delicioso.

This place is just absolutely delicious. I think I could put those pickled carrots and jalapenos on everything I eat. Enchiladas: awesome.

Friendly service and decent food. I thought it was a little pricey for what you got but it was good tasting. We ordered enchiladas, fajitas and quesadillas. The server was very friendly and was trying to cheer up my daughter who was sulking when we arrived which I always appreciate as a mother with young children.

Been here quite a few times with friends after a late night of drinking and enjoying life. The place is nice, the food is better than average, but sadly the service is lacking, but it's not expected to be much better. I tend to frequent places like Jose's and El Burrito Loco and I believe this place comes close to a tie with El Burrito Loco but just under Jose's. I haven't experienced everything on the menu, but the items I do enjoy like the Tortas and typical mexican-american fares all are decent and it's open late. My opinion is good when sober, great when drunk!

I was told Los Portales was the best Mexican food in Rockford - I can believe that. We started with chips and a nice smoky, roasted pepper salsa and some horchata. My lunch was two tacos - one chorizo, one al pastor - and a pork tamale. The tacos didn't blow me away but they were quite good. The tamale was small but it was meaty and fatty, just beautiful. I also enjoyed the vinegary, almost pickled vegetables provided that were fresh cut. In conclusion: Los Portales is a reason to end up in downtown Rockford.

If you are anywhere near Los Portales, you have to stop in and try the Steak Burrito dinner. My favorite refried beans in Rockford. Steak Burrito is great. And you won't find better, more affordable Mexican food in Rockford (if you do- let me know!). An all around win for anyone who likes a good, inexpensive burrito!

I'll give it three stars because the staff was friendly and the place was clean. As for the food, I can't say that was overly impressed. I asked the server what the best thing on the menu was and she said everything - really? I asked what she was going to have for lunch there and she didn't know. For Pete's Sake, sell me something. I settled on the tacos and they were just okay. The meat was pretty dry. She could have sold me anything she wanted and instead I got dry tacos. Would I try them again, maybe. Will I make it a priority, not likely.

Love love love! Over 3 years I've been thru most of this menu and am yet to come across anything that I did not LOVE here. Whenever family comes into town, I do take away at least once from here. Bar none best Mexican food in Rockford!

Pretty nice place, and it comes as a bit of a surprise, given the very nondescript building that it is in. They offer a pretty authentic menu, and the food is nothing to complain about at all, but in the realm of Mexican food, I have done a lot better, which is what keeps this from being 4 stars for me.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
