I visited this place while in Quincy. It is a cute place, but the Maid Rites drip grease. Gross! Would never return. Even the wax paper they wrap the sandwiches are greasy. Why would anyone want to eat grease?

A famous place located in Quincy, Il. on North 12th St. The place has been in business since 1928. The Maid Rites are really awesome. The TV chef, Alton Brown, visited here, he and his TV crew were so impressed, that he gave the restaurant a four star rating. That's awesome. ....

I've been eating here since I was a baby, and I'm in my 40s. The Maid Rite sandwiches are the best. And that is all.

We went after the morning lectures at our Spring Meeting of AGS. There were 8 of us and they handled the group pretty well. I think every one else had the loose meat sandwich and they seemed pretty impressed. I had the Pulled Pork and cole slaw. This meant that I was served first, by a long time. So long I think I was done when the rest of the food arrived. The cole slaw is $2 for a decent sized scoop in a plastic container. I really liked it. I like creamy slaw. That is what I had. The pulled pork is excellent, the sauce did not really do it justice. I will admit there are three and I may have made a poor choice. I ordered smokey there two other kinds a sweet one and a spicy one. It wasn't bad just the pulled pork was nice and smokey and obviously just made. The sauce was cold in plastic container. But still excellent meat.

I mean, if you've never had Maid-Rite and you're in these parts, it's kinda a must try...if for nothing else to say that you have. Imagine a sloppy joe's with no sauce, add some onions and pickles and you have a regular Maid-Rite. You can add cheese if you'd like. Nothing fancy - both in terms of food or presentation - but hits the spot when you're hungry. The best thing I tried on the menu was actually the fried cauliflower (which I think has a little cheese in it?). The food is basic, the service is basic (no tipping!), and the prices are ok. When you walk in it may seem like you walked into a diner in the heartland of America circa 1950. Some of the employees may have been working here since then too.

No stars for the service, but when you have a craving, you have a craving. It took fifteen minutes to be waited on, and diners who arrived after us were able to place their orders before we did. Despite both of us letting staff know we would like to order, we still had to catch one of the waiters whizzing by to get service. I am hangry.

Gave a 2 star because the service sucks but the food is good. Order your maid rite dry unless you like grease.

My family grew up in Quincy, Illinois, therefore I spent many summers enjoying these loose meat sandwiches. I enjoy my maid rite every time I eat one, two okay maybe three. The deep fried cauliflower is pretty tasty as well.

Can't figure why this was ever on food network. We went due to that and thought it was pretty blahhh. Maybe we got the wrong things. I did get the shrimp salad and it was pretty good.

Good place for lunch with decent pricing. The sandwiches were alright but the staff wasn't too friendly. Worth stopping by if you work in the area.

Visited from out of town and I have to say - I wish more places like Maid Rite were still in existence! The restaurant has stayed in the same family (for what-almost 100 years?) - even when the neighboring hospital tried to buy the place to use as a parking lot. The value for the money is great! I had the standard Maid Rite sandwich and it was DELISH! Wish I had something like it here in Tennessee. They have a TONS of desserts - I tried the peanut butter pie (so light and fluffy) and my friend's seasonal strawberry pie, which were both awesome! They also have a bunch of thick shakes, too. Overall, I'd definitely say give it a try! It's a staple in the town, from my understanding, and it's not something you'll find in every neighborhood, like a McDonald's or a Wendy's.

This has to be the original Maid Rite. Walk in the door and its like time stopped back in the 50s. I drove 600 miles just for these tasty little sandwiches. You have to try them, the Super with cheese and Everything. Try one extra greasy! Yummy MB

Ohhhh my god. This place has 4 stars? are you kidding me?? Well where do I begin? The service is terrible, they are not friendly at all and pretty much throws the burgers down on your table. The burgers are the worst burger/sandwich I have ever had in my life and I was practically gagging at the table. The burger came to the table not even warm. Do you know what happens to grease when it cools? it turns into a solid. Disgusting! The fries and onion rings were the ones you used to have in grade school, the fries with the ridges in them. The order of onion rings came to the table in a basket with only 5 onion rings and they are 1.5 in diameter. This place is horrible and I wish I could give it negative stars.

It had been a while since I'd eaten here. Went yest for lunch, went back for supper! The Rites are so good! Mine were not a greasy as I recalled from the past. But, greasy done right.... Anyway, the fried califlower was awesome. My daughter loved the broccoli bites. The onion straws were not so great. Love the fries. Get the large, the difference for .20 is big. Just talking about it makes me want to go back for more!

Maid Rite was one of the first franchised fast food chains, and this Quincy location is one of the oldest still in operation, if not THE oldest. The titular sandwich is like a sloppy joe without the sauce. Food from Maid Rite never tastes mass produced, and they have those awesome crinkle cut fries that you get at bowling alleys. Also, Alton Brown went to this Maid Rite on a food Network special, which buys it even more cred.

This place is an institution in this city. A Maid Rite is a seasoned loose ground beef sandwich and it is fantastic! I grew up two blocks away when the sandwiches were $0.17 each. You won't pay that now, but they are still worth it. Sorta diner style and they do not allow, never have allowed tipping. You gotta try it!

Simple food in an old fashioned setting. You gotta love it.

I grew up on Maid Rites (I'm in my 60s) ..Maid Rite, yellow mustard and one pickle chip..We spent hours and hours trying to recreate them and still believe that it simply has to do with the little square pan being seasoned by a million pounds of Maid Rite Meat. Going home to Quincy thus weekend after 35 years..Lunch will be a couple of Maid Rites!!! There's still one operating in Cedar Rapids that may be older. But the old Quincy store makes the best.

Ok this was a little different. Hamburger meats is loose like sloppy joes but without the sauce. The food is good but the portions are small. The service is great but you are not allowed to tip, which made me feel bad. If your in the mood for something alittle different this is a good stop.

I just don't get it! Maid Rite is a Quincy landmark. People who move away from Quincy yearn for Maid Rite, and it's the first place they go when they come home to visit. It's even been featured on some Food Network or PBS show, but I don't remember which one. People say it's a step back in time, and they're right. Sitting in the place you feel like someone set the Wayback Machine to 1955! (Not a bad thing) I just don't get the attraction of a "loose meat" sandwich, but I'm definitely in the minority around Quincy on that topic though. I will say the pies are outstanding, and home made I think. They opened a BBQ stand in their parking lot, and the BBQ there is outstanding.

One of the best comfort foods in the world... I always leave wishing I had ordered just one more...

Can you say, greasy, fried, gross?? Counter woman missing teeth. I love kitschy retro diner stuff. This place is awful.

Very good Maid Rite and well run as well. The person from UT. ordered a shrimp salad...you don't do that at a Maid Rite....they shouldn't have had that on the salad. You get a Maid Rite with mustard, onion, and pickle....I've been doing this for 61 years and this is a very good Maid Rite....

Nothing special. Ground beef on bread. That's it.

I love the Maid Rite, I have been going there for 60 years. The meg rite is the best. BUT, If you go to the Casino in La Grange to eat, you better leave a tip or the waitresses will call you an asshole.

Rode my bicycle over to this diner after hearing many great things about it, and that it was on a couple of Food Network shows. The Maid Rite and some crinkle cut fries will run you just shy of $5, add an ice cold Dr. Pepper, and you have soared to a total of $5.72 for lunch. Expecting a sort of Steak and Shakeesque burger with the loose beef, I was surprised and delighted when it was more like taco meat, but of the delicious variety. The waitress pointed out that this Maid Rite, was not part of the franchise, but locally owned...that was all I could gather about the originality of the place. The logo is different than that of the other franchised locations.

Charming old timey spot! I'd never had loose meat before and it was pretty good. Our grandmotherly waitress was very sweet and gave us her pie recommendations. My son goes to college here and we will definitely be coming back!

I've eaten Maid-Rites since I was a kid. I drive 900 miles from my home in Florida to my home in Iowa, and I never go without driving through Quincy to have a Maid-Rite - they are some of the best - just like from my childhood. The food is good, I've never had rude service, and tipping is NOT allowed. It's not fancy - it's not meant to be - it's a diner - like from the 50s because it's been there since then - I ate there when I was a teen. If I want fancy Florida is full of them - if I want the best burger available I stop at Maid-Rite.

Tasted like beef hearts ground up. (I would put money on it) Gross Gross Gross. Pies are good everything else is from the box frozen.. No thanks

I will admit not everyone will love this place, but it is either a home run or a dud for most people. I love the super maid rite with everything and the strip tenderloin with extra onion. Some people think the juice on the maid rite is grease but a lot of it is water from the cooking process, but they can be greasy and delicious.

Food is good for the most part but customers practically have to beg for ketchup. Maid Rite is a Quincy tradition and has been featured on "Feasting on Asphalt" with Alton Brown from The Food Network. It typically takes awhile to get waited on here, and once someone helps you, 10 waitresses/waiters will offer to wait on you which is annoying. There is no tipping allowed which may be why the wait staff isn't very friendly. We actually took a friend here for the first time in Oct. and she refuses to come back because the waitress was so sarcastic and rude.

Wow! I read the reviews and yes I will admit, I doubted. I don't eat a ton of meat and have never really had a loose meat sandwhich before. But wow! I got the cheese rite with lettuce and pickle only, fries and a soda. I haven't been able to stop thinking about this meal since.

This was my first taste of the infamous loose meat sandwich, and I'm definitely hooked. The restaurant itself is as old-school as can be (waitresses wearing old bonnets, sandwiches for $2, crinkle cut fries, etc) but that only adds to the goodness. I settled for the Mega with cheese, pickles and mustard (but probably should've gotten the super, as I was definitely craving more). Not sure when my next trip to Quincy will be, but I'll be sure to hit up Maid Rite again...

Pass on the burgers, but decent corn dogs and fries.

I have been going here since I was a little girl. My mom has been going here since she was a little girl and my grandma has been going here since SHE was a little girl! This place has stood the test of time and hasn't changed their delicious recipe since. This place is delicious and cheap!! You simply cannot pass through Quincy without getting your hands on one of these amazing, greasy, loose meat sandwiches.
