Took 30+ minutes for appetizer pizza to come out. Another 20 mins. for main course. Was frustrating watching everyone else around us get served and we sat with nothing in front of us but bread. Good food, but takes a very long time for it to get to the table.

Went with my foodie daughter & son in law on the weekend after New Years, full by the time we left. Our food was great, My whole roasted chicken made a great leftover lunch the following day. Enough for two big meals, seasoned with leeks excellent! Osso Buco beautiful, again enough for two meals, my wife's pasta excellent. Great value. Owner up front, friendly, Server made us feel welcome, terrific, wish I remembered her name, friendly and efficient. She spoke with an accent, maybe from Holland? Would highly recommend for adults. Signature house salad beautiful presentation. Nice atmosphere, not designed for kids.

I'm really only reviewing one dish and the service at this place....but both are amazing. The lunch portion of the half roasted chicken is the juiciest, best piece of poultry that nine dollars can buy. Go off the board and get it with a side of steamed broccoli instead of the potato and it will increase your lifespan by 30 days. If Kristy/Kristin is your waitress, get ready for the lunch of your life because she's wonderful. If you get iced tea or water, your glass will be full for your entire meal by the water/tea guy that is the best in the business. Haven't been here for dinner...but any chance to get that chicken in my mouth is worth it.

Its been about 16 years since we were here last and might be another 16 before we come back. First off, if you are under 40, you will feel very out of place here. As a friend, quietly whispered to me : "This place looks like the cafeteria in a nursing home". The place gets crowded and unless you show up early for weekend dinner, prepare to fight/wait for a parking space and seat at the restaurant. The food was ok, nothing special. Looking around the other tables, the big seller appears to be the 1/2 chicken for $15. My wife has the Chicken Parm and it was very dry. She commented that even Olive Garden tastes better. I had the Minestrone Soup which was very good and the Grilled Prawns with fettucini. It was one of the pricier dishes on the menu and I expected more than 4 shrimps on the plate for $25. Soup and Salad are ala-carte, but fill yourself up on some delicious garlic bread. We have better options in Chicago, I would skip this place.

Horrible service. We ordered takeout. They called us and told us when it was ready, and then had to wait another 15 minutes. Once I put it in my car, it was leaking sauce. When we got it at home, they were missing two of the thing we paid for. On top of everything, we called to get the things they missed removed from our card and they said we would have to come in and get it to rectify their mistake. Won't be back.

Tried to have a fine meal at The Hole in the Wall next door for my mothers 65th birthday. Unfortunately, a one hour wait turned to two hours than three. Luckily the owners ex-wife owns the place next door. Treated horribly at Hole in the Wall like we were garbage. The service at this restaurant treated us like patrons not dogs as was the case at Franks Hole in the Wall. Thank you again, go here not a restaurant that treats people as an object.

Went here for lunch and the service was HORRIBLE! Wait staff was unattentive and acted as if they didn't want to serve the group I was with. Turkey Burger was a bit too spicy tasted like a taco on a ciabatta roll....Won't visit this place ever again.

I noted to my dining companion that when you're here, you're family! Not in the cheesy, Olive Garden way, but it truly appeared that the owner and patrons actually knew one another and care about each other. In typical Italian fashion, some walls were covered with cheesy photos of the owner(s) and celebrities. May be cute to some but I find it super duper tacky. The staff was sweet and full of helpful recommendations from both the regular menu and the specials - neither of us got the broasted chicken (the most popular item) However I certainly picked the winner with the eggplant parmigiana. It was just absolutely perfect, and I ate my leftovers cold for breakfast the next morning (leaps and bounds above a hotel breakfast). Plus, we were bonused a dessert of a decadent brownie and grapes.

We love this place. The owner is sweet and walks around to make sure everything is good. The Next Door Bistro salad is to die for. Simple but delicious. Great homemade garlic bread. My husband LOVES the chicken. I love the pasta. Everything has been great. We also sometimes get take-out and, it sounds silly, but they package everything so nicely in a box with cardboard between hot and cold dishes etc. They, just in general, go the extra mile.

I was surprised that this place didn't have more reviews/photos. At the recommendation of other yelp reviewers I decided to order the Whole Roasted Chicken. What a great decision! Just as others said, it was the most tender piece of meat I've ever had! I usually go for marbled beef because I love the flavors absorbed by the fat, so I was a bit hesitant to order chicken. However, I was far from disappointed due to the abundance of both dark and white meat. The skin was spiced, flavorful and must be credited for allowing the meat to be so tender! Only tip I'd give is to share it with someone else, it was way too big for me! Oh and I must add that the bread was some of the best pre-meal Italian bread I have ever had. Great meal all around.

Absolutely love this place! The bread they bring you before the food comes out is Uh-mazing! I've gone there so much that they know what I drink and have it ready within seconds of sitting down. Eddie (refills drinks as well as cleans up the plates) is the absolute man! Def a character (in a good way). Good prices, good food and an overall good place. Will continue to go here. Oh yeah and the dessert is pretty awesome as well :)

I haven't eaten here for a number of years, as we typically go to Hole In the Wall. Both restaurants were owned by the same family, but after the divorce, the husband kept Hole in the Wall, and the wife kept Next Door Bistro, the split occurring a number of years ago. Next Door Bistro is less congested, with a little more room between tables. There are similarities, with garlic bread provided to the tables, and the signature house salad has got a very similar recipe for the dressing (if not exactly the same) but with no meat or slices of cheese. The prices are reasonable with a couple of exceptions. I think $28.00 is very high for branzino, especially for one that smelled a bit fishy and tasted a bit off. If I had had the dish, I probably would have sent it back, but L*** thought it was fine. I had the veal chop (also $28.00), and it was a thick veal rib chop cooked medium rare as requested and topped with caramelized leeks. The chop itself was very fatty, and did not have a lot of taste. The veal chop at Hole in the Wall is far better with much better seasoning balance and bigger with no excess untrimmed fat. R*** had the half duck, which I tasted and thought was overcooked. I love a crispy skin duck, but the meat still has to be moist inside. Service was wonderful, which is why 3 stars instead of 2. Maybe it was an off night for the kitchen. I think it would be worth another visit, as the people are so nice, and I know that the food has been better.

Long time North Shore favorite - I absolutely love their chicken w/fried scallions, but everything there is great. Even fun to dine at the bar, people watch & chat with their interesting bartenders. Great neighborhood spot, I always bump into people I know there.

We stumbled upon the Next Door Bistro while out running errands in Northbrook, not our usual neighborhood. They were quick to accommodate us, even without a reservation, on what appeared to be a busy Saturday evening. We were certainly bringing down the average age in the place, but I took that as a good sign. Older patrons were regulars and greeted each other and staff by name. I had the roasted chicken breast at the recommendation of other reviewers. It was incredible. The crispy leeks on top are crave-worthy. I didn't finish it, but the leftovers were just as delicious a few nights later. Even the steamed broccoli I ordered as a side was bright and flavorful. I semi-regret not trying the cottage fries as my side -- they looked crispy and wonderful. The warm garlic bread at the start of the meal was a nice touch. Service was attentive and fantastic. I wouldn't have blamed them if it lacked -- there were wall-to-wall people -- but they didn't slip at all. We'll be back, probably with a reservation next time.

We are weekly customers and LOVE this restaurant. The Osso Bucco with risotto is awesome as are all of the entrees. The service is excellent but make sure to make reservations because the restaurant has MANY regulars and fills up quickly!

Service gets 4 stars. Bartender was very nice and helpful. Food gets a 3! Had the brick chicken, which while flavorful, didn't have the crispy skin that one would expect from this dish. Caesar salad was a little above average, and the house cabernet wasn't very good. Dessert of keylime cheesecake tasted frozen. Really wanted to go the the restaurant next door, but they were closed. Wouldn't come back with so many supposed good restaurants in Chicago, but the were nice and friendly.

I've been going to Next Door for years and years because I simply love the food. There aren't many restaurants in the burbs where you can go for quality dinner, and so Next Door is somewhat of a gem. My family always starts out with the Next Door salad. We love the asiago, leeks and roasted red peppers. -- it's even a dish my mom will now try to recreate when she cooks her own dinners. All the main dishes are great (pasta, fish, etc), but Next Door is one of the only places I will go to actually order chicken. The meat is tender and flavorful and it's topped with crispy leeks...so good! I also LOVE the spinach in tomato sauce. Best spinach I have ever had. I could eat spoonfuls with no end. To top it off, you can end the meal with a delish piece of chocolate chip banana cake! Warning -- it's super hard to resist. I've heard complaints from other people - it's too cramped, the service isn't great, bla bla bla bla. But I choose to ignore any of these issues since the food is good and usually makes you feel good (not greasy or fatty or heavy). PLUS, there is a great carry out service so you can skip the dining in experience anyways! I say, stop complaining and just eat up at this suburban staple.

Been here twice from out of town and its great! Like everyone says, try the roasted chicken with the leeks. Beautifully seasoned! Wife had the Italian sausage and risotto and it was every bit as delightful. Only warning: be prepared yo wait, even during the week. Its worth it!

A solid American /Italian eatery. The one thing I can highly recommend is the roasted chicken breast. I know it sounds boring but it one of the best around especially in the north burbs.

Just got back from another wonderful meal at Next Door Bistro. This may be the best place in the Chicago area for a chicken dinner (the other competitor is the unforgettable Kalamata chicken at the Athenian Room in Lincoln Park). There's other good stuff on the menu (the skirt steak, for instance), but honestly, you're crazy to come here and order anything besides the whole chicken, which is an incredible bargain at $16.99, including fries, pasta or a veggie. The meat is so juicy (and even moister when you dip it in the natural juices that gather on the bottom of your huge plate), and the skin is nice and crunchy. It's garnished with tasty, crunchy leeks, which are a little like onions but better. I don't even know why I bother trying to cook chicken at home any more, because it could never be half as good. And there's so much food, I always eat half at the restaurant and save half for the next night at home, where it warms up nicely in the oven for a great leftover. Before your chicken comes, you start the meal with a plate of warm, crusty, homemade garlic bread that may be the best I've ever had, accompanied by an extremely rich and smoky olive oil. It's useless to resist. You'll finish it all. And order a salad to share. The dressing is fabulous. I notice that other reviewers here have had mixed things to say about the service, but I can't complain. We have two boys, ages 12 and 9, and the servers are always warm and friendly and go out of their way to please despite the fact that we kind of stick out in what tends to be an older crowd. When my younger son observed that the fork he had wasn't perfectly clean, a busboy was replacing it and apologizing before I could even tell him about it (he must have overheard my son!). I can't say enough about this place. We've been there many times and will be back again soon.

Monday night and it's open! I had forgotten how nice it was to be at a restaurant where people know and greet their fellow diners. My fellow diners were older and well dressed with not a cell phone in sight. All children were very well behaved and quiet. The portions were very large and heavy, but nicely spiced and beautifully served. The bartender was excellent. I had the Lemon Kiss martini. We ate the house salad, salad caprese, hot crusty bread with good quality olive oil, duck à la orange and pasta with mussels and assorted calamari, claws, scallops under a heavy spicy red sauce. Too full to even think about dessert.

Suppose you went to a restaurant in the north suburbs, a perennially popular restaurant, with a menu neither here, Italy, France, America, or there; suppose on this vaguely western hemisphere-al menu you ordered a chilean sea bass--ethical principles be damned--that seemed simple and non-screwable enough for the old people. Fair enough, indeed. Suppose that said patagonian toothfish was, surprise, served perfectly cooked, the right consistency and semi-flakiness; suppose you are content. Now suppose that parts of the fish are salted to the point of inedibility, and the rest is completely under-salted. You are confused. One supposes you could ask the waitress to bring it back to the kitchen, but look around: food-phobes everywhere. You ponder for a moment: in this context, wasn't the fish served properly? What, then, is the point of sending it back to the kitchen--they did their job. You leave a piece of couscous on your chin and sigh. Moral relativism. Ah.

I live in the city but go up north almost every Sunday to meet my family for dinner. The menu here is great! Don't fill up on the bread. Its hard not too, their bread is fantastic!!!! They have such a huge menu. I always start off with their chopped salad, its large, feeds about 4-5 people and its great. I've had just about every pasts dish on the menu and all of them are great! I especially love their eggplant and chicken dish. Everything has always been great. My only complaint I have is that they really squeeze you in the restaurant. Its very hard for any of the servers or staff to go by and they are always bumping your chair. They should really remove one or two tables to make is more accessible. It can be very irritating. Prices are also very reasonable and portions are very big.

Oh Suzanna... Basics: best bread I've ever had. BEST. Gnocchi was good, but was covered with vodka sauce one could only categorize as "mezzo." Health Salad is similar to my signature spinach / fresh greens / fruit / goat cheese / honey glazed walnuts / balsamic salad without the red peppers, sweet onions, capers, avacado, celantro, dill, walnuts, and with significantly less goat cheese than I add (even for not so well-liked guests). The tiramisù, I ordered for an old acquaintance, looked great. But alas, I did not have any. Decor is nice. Clearly, a lady runs this place (Suzanna's pics are plastered all over the foyer with famuosos of all types).

My husband and I decided to try this place for the first time this past weekend. We started off with their amazing garlic bread, and ate a lot of it! Then, we ordered their ceasar salad which tasted extremely fresh. For dinner, my husband ordered a dish of two types of ravioli and I ordered the rigatoni with veal meatballs. Both dishes were delicious, authentic and full of flavor. Our server Mary Rose was attentive, friendly and efficient. For dessert, we ordered a banana chocolate chip cake. My husband loved it, but I thought it was a little on the dry side. Our check only came to $50. We left stuffed. I highly recommend this place for excellent food and good service. I can't wait to go back!

Have been here a few times. First time I went with a friend who is a regular so service was quite good and very attentive. The next times I wet without the friend and then service was really bad. We were being ignored and took for ever. The food is american with a touch of italy - I wouldn't call it Italian. But having lived in Italy I think my parameter for Italian food is different from most americans. I do like the eggplant with tomatoes - lots of garlic and very yummy. My big hesitation is that hair seems to be a main ingredient at this establishment each time I have gone here, although it does not appear on their menu. It is long hair and really I don't fancy eating hair. Also often the cups and utensils have been dirty or greasy - or as last time my water glass had lipstick on it. As I don't use makeup then I don't fancy getting lipstick on my lips while drinking.

I've eaten here before, and the food was okay. Not much better than any other Italian-ish place in the suburbs, but decent. This review is mainly about the service we received. We came to the restaurant on a Tuesday night, and when we arrived, we were told that there would be a 30 minute wait. We decided to wait it out, and had a seat and a drink. While we were waiting, people started coming into the restaurant and filling up the bar area, and we were glad that our wait was only going to be about 30 minutes, because it was getting really crowded. Then, we started to notice that people who had come in way after us were being seated before us. Weird. Then, the hostess came over and asked us our names. A few minutes later, she pointed to a table, and said that as soon as those people left, we would be seated at that particular table. Five minutes later, they started making the table into a huge table for a larger party. Because we only had three people in our group, we started to get worried. The hostess came over to us and said that actually wasn't going to be our party, but as soon as one of the smaller tables in the dining area cleared, we would be next. None of the tables looked close to being finished, and we had already waited for over an hour. It was so rude! At this point we left. We told the hostess that we were going, and she didn't even care. We won't be back again.

Simply put...The Best Chicken I have had in my life. I had chicken vesuvio...chicken in olive oil and garlic. It was moist and delisiouo! I also had a side of sauteed broccoli. Again...cooked to perfection. The place is tiny and friendly. Perfect atmosphere. Not stuffy. And the whole meal was $21 with tip. Now that's a bargin.

We loved this small little place! On the wall were photos of the owner and many celebrity patrons---no one asked to take our photo. There was a 1/2 hour wait, so we took the offer to eat at the bar. The bartender was from Georgia (the country) and very friendly and informative. He slapped a couple of cloth napkins over the counter and brought us silverware. We sampled Oregon and Napa Valley wines while we waited for our dinner. First came the freshly fried potato slices (just too good to fit into the potatoe chip category!) with olive oil and lots of parmesan cheese available for drizzlin'. Then came the homemade sourdough herb bread, which was warm and delicious! Salad was fresh and dressing was tasty. I had Lobster filled raviolis (ummm-ummm) and my husband had Osso Buco (tender slow-cooked shanks). We also ordered wine with our meal. The bartender narrated through each course and was like a personal waiter. Told us about his culture and experience as a bartender, and of course he had great expertise with Vodka. We stuffed ourselves, and based on this experience we will have dinner on barstools any day!

An awesome American Bistro restaurant. Amazing chicken, a great spinach appetizer/side dish and really good salads. They also have great deserts. Be fore warned though. I think they only take reservations for larger parties and they don't take credit cards. Also not a very big place. About only 15-20 tables. It can be a long wait on weekends. A very reasonable menu makes this a great place for an intimate special occasion.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
