Stopped in with my wife and a friend and we all very much enjoyed what we ate. I had a combination with a tostada, steak and enchilada and everything was very succulent. The Margarito was very very good too. Lipsmacking good in fact. My wife and our friend each had the skirt steak which just like mine was very tender and flavorful if not a tiny bit too salty. We will ask for less salt next time. Because we definitely will be coming back!

Food is meh and the price is way too high for slightly below average food and a dingy dining atmosphere. The service, though not attentive, was fine. Their salsa is yummy, as is their guacamole.

Km We live in the area and thought we'd try the place. It's tucked in the strip mall by IHOP. We had a taste for Mexican food. We went at about 3 pm and there was only one person inside dining. The establishment is bright and clean looking. The waiter seated us and as we looked at the menu, the prices seemed a little pricey for the amount of food described. Everything was ala cart. We ordered guacamole and chips and each of us had a burrito. No rice or beans came with it, but you could get it for extra price. The guacamole was unremarkable with no flavor and not much of it. Chips tasted old and stale. Salsa had no flavor except strong pepper. The burrito was average with no seasoning in the steak. We both had water to drink. I would have had coffee but it was no refills. I like to have a couple of cups with my meal but I won't pay for each cup. The bill came to over $30 for meals that were not tasty. We had to wait quite a bit for the waiter to come out of the kitchen before we could pay and get out of there. Bathroom was clean but no soap. We couldn't tell anyone because no one was there to tell. I cannot recommend this place for Mexican food. Your money would be better spent at Taco Burrito King.

Excellent service, and good margaritas. The food is not extravagant but very good quality and is not greasy. Salsa is made in house and has a good kick.

What a nice little place! Hidden in the back of a large strip mall. I have seen it many times over the last several years and finally decided to give it a try. I said to my wife; The worst thing that's going to happen is we really enjoy our meal and wonder why we didn't try it sooner!! Very Traditional Mexican Decoration in there and great service!! Immediately greeted with Awesome Chips and deliciously hot salsa. My wife very much enjoyed her Sangria, I opted for a Negra Modelo. I wanted a little bit of everything so I ordered the Sabor Ixtapa Combo Platter; Mini chicken burrito(great chicken)Guacamole Tostada(great guacamole)Chile Relleno(little soggy, but still good)Small piece of skirt steak(delicious and would order a full steak next time) My wife ordered Camarones A La Diabla. She said the shrimp were cooked perfectly and the sauce was flavorful with a nice spice to it! Fairly expansive menu with several Seafood Options. One thing I did notice was a lack of Pork options, but I am OK with that. Definitely worth a visit!!! Having been to Mexico 7 times in my life, I can assure you that the Review that referenced TBK is WAAAYYY off.

Had a taste for a steak burrito and decided to give them a shot. I ordered the steak burrito and when it arrived I have to say it was really small. A $8.00 steak burrito at most places in the area are huge, you need both hands to hold onto and they still are hard to handle. The meat was good but not much of it. It's pretty sad I actually left still hungry.

Excellent food. They charge for a refill on a pop which is kind of cheap.

I am fairly picky when it comes to Mexican food. We ordered the Carne Asada and the mini chicken Burritos. Both were served with rice, a small salad and refried beans. If you do not like refried beans you can tell them to give you "Double Rice" instead. The rice is yummy, tender and very flavorful. We both liked our dishes and thought the food was flavorful and authentic. My husband thought the Carne Asada was pretty good and rated it with 4 stars; I rated my dish the same and thought it was just the right portion. The chicken burritos were super delectable! How did we discover this joint? We were shopping at the Staples Office Supply store for a specific printer, and were hungry when we finished. We didn't want to drive very far for a bite to eat, so we spotted this restaurant from across the parking lot and thought let's give it a shot. We learned that it is a family-owned restaurant and the Owner is always present. It is brightly painted with mint green and orange bold colors and colorful decor on the walls with authentic Mexican pieces. The restaurant is charming, small, cheerful and inviting. We went here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, and there were only two other couples in the restaurant. The prices are reasonable (they have lunch specials and the price-points were on trend with other Mexican restaurants) and the service was fairly decent. We later learned that it was the Owner who took our order, brought our water to the table and refilled our water glasses. The chips and salsa were also pretty good (not greasy). They make their own salsa (pico de gallo) which we also learned during our visit here. If you are ever in this area give it a try. There is ample free parking. This restaurant is located around the corner from the I-HOP restaurant and a few doors away from Quizno's sandwiches. We enjoyed talking with the Owner, and learning how they make their chips and salsa. Of course, the "secret" ingredient for the salsa was not divulged, but I can assure you that the salsa is not out of a jar! (See my review for "Las Palmas" Mexican Restaurant located on Montrose Ave just east of Harlem Ave and one block west of Oak Park Ave).

This place is horrible. Wouldn't recommend to anyone...ever! Started off with margaritas that were mostly sugar and were missing the key ingredient...tequilla. We ordered a couple of dinner platters only to be further disappointed by this place. Will never be back. And to top it all off the waiter is incompetent, and the prices are god awful!

Only ate here once, but I recall it wasn't anything special, but also not the absolute worst Mexican place I've eaten at. Was long enough ago, that I don't recall what I ordered. Perhaps I'll give it another shot someday....

Ixtapa's average at best and their prices (at lunch time in particular) strike me as kind of high for what you get. $9.95 for 3 over-fried flautas filled with dry chicken and some bland rice and beans? The meal wasn't good enough to command that price at lunch time. If you can't handle the heat of their regular salsa, don't even bother requesting the mild unless you like dipping your chips in tomato soup. Meh. If you're in the area while craving Mexican food, there's better places around.

Sabor Ixtapa is not a greasy taqueria (not like theres anything wrong with that) which becomes apparent when realizing the scope and quality of the menu and should not be compared to fast food chains like TBK etc. For one thing Sabor Ixtapa offers extremely fresh and perfectly cooked fish dishes which significantly raises its standing above many other Mexican establishments available in its area. For another, the menu offers items such as Mexican fideos, stews, and soups which tend to be harder to find, let alone so well prepared. The usual items such as tacos, enchiladas, etc are also above average in flavor, preparation, and quality. There is no wrong move when it comes to ordering from this place. Everything from the salsa to the dinner selections are unique and delicious. Not to miss items include: DE PESCADO AL MOJO DE AJO Whole red snapper fried in 100% vegetable oil, topped with garlic and green onions, which are sautéed in olive oil and a special cooking wine. Served with rice, salad & tortillas. $14.95 FIDEOS ACAPULCO Spaghetti topped with chicken breast, green spicy sauce and mushrooms. $ 8.95 STEAK FAJITAS Sizzling grilled skirt steak strips with green peppers, onions and tomatoes; served with rice, beans, sour cream and salad. (With chicken and shrimps $13.95) $11.95 TORTAS Mexican sandwich spread with beans. Choice of ground beef, avocado or scrambled eggs with chorizo, topped with lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, avocado and cheese (With steak, $6.95, with milanesa, $6.95) $ 5.95 Cons: This is a 'sit down' restaurant in scope and quality of the menu but its not the 'prettiest' place to sit. While clean, comfortable, and with excellent service, this place is painted in an almost neon green color that may be a turn off to the average wandering eater. Overall: Mexican fast food stands aside, there really is no competition that exists in the entire area when it comes to this category of quality Mexican food.

This place is a ripoff. I ordered a combo plate that had an enchilada, a chicken tostada, a small skirt steak, and rice and beans. Everything on the plate was bland. I felt like nothing had flavor. I can make better Mexican food at home. You have to try really hard to make bland Mexican food and they succeeded. I will never go to this place again, especially with their high prices.

Pretty standard Mexican food. I had one of their combo platters, which was nice if not a bit expensive. I liked their chile rellenos. The salsa was a bit spicier than I would have liked, but it and the chips were pretty good. You can probably get the food cheaper at Taco Burrito King, and possibly bigger portions, too.

I would say there food is so so. Not the best but not too bad. The burritos there are greasy and the meat just plops out of it everytime you try taking a bit but there tacos are pretty good.

This Mexican place is at a great location near Harlem Irving Plaza and it's is really inviting from all sides. The food, however, was slightly disappointing. The burrito was too watery. Many of my friends, including myself, have gotten sick from this place, too. I wouldn't recommend it.

I've come here a number of times and I like it very much. It's owned by members of the same family who own Taxco and many of their recipes are the same. (I did note with some amusement that on another review site someone accused them of using bagged tortilla chips and jarred salsa. I can vouch for the fact that both are made fresh. The salsa recipe in particular is classic Taxco.) We went there last week for brunch and had the chilaquilles which were very, very good. Granted the eggs were hard-scrambled, but since that's the way I prefer them (soft or runny eggs make me want to yak) I had no problems with them. The portions were generous, the beans and rice were very good, and we got free refills on our coffee, so I don't know what the problem was with another reviewer. Though in all fairness it could be because I do know the family; that's hard to say for sure. What can I say? It's true it's not Taxco. There's enough of a difference that if I had to choose I'd choose my old favorite. But I believe it's well worth a visit, and hands down the best choice in that mall.

After an exhausting 20 minutes of laser tag the margaritas here were a welcome. The glasses were kind of small, but the drinks were decent. The salsa is really nice and spicy. The nachos on the otherhand, were very weak. It looked like such a half hearted attempt. There seemed to be about 20 chips that you could count piled on with only beans and cheese. The quesadillas were small and kind of mediocre as well. I have had better Mexican food in the area and it's not really worth the money when other places have similar lunch specials for the same price $4.95. The service was slow for only having 2 tables there.

Thank God for this Mexican restaurant!!! to be fair I should disclose I am new to the area. I have lived most my adult life east of western, south of Foster and north of Deversy. 18th and 26th streats are quickly accessible. I have learned over time that the further I get from the lake the wrose the food gets. And It does not matter what food! I am glad that I am able to get a Huachinango Al Mojo de Ajo. I love that it was pefectly prepaired. It was light and fluffy and perfectly cooked. If anyone has ever had a badly cooked Huachinango then they would know the diffrence, and for my wife to get a dam good shrimp and octopus cocktail in this area was very lucky. This onto itself was so fortunate because my wife's palet for freshness is more sesative than mine. To find dishes like these this far west is rare when it comes to a small place like this. Places like these are so readly available when we live in the lincoln square area. My server was attentive and quick, my beer (Negra Modelo) was deliciously ice cold. Finaly I nor my wife have nothing negative to say about the regular dishes. In closing I love hot foods.

Good place, but far from excellent. I feel like I'm used to certain staples when it comes to mexican places. First of all, free unlimited salsa chips, and free refills... I can forgive the lack of not having free refills.. but come on- I want morrre chips! :D Overall the meals were good, but I feel like I should have been paying a bit less than what I was. Either give me a larger portion, or give it to me cheaper. Either way- I still need to find a really good mexican place... this one suffices for the moment... but I know there is soooooooo much better.

Got my food and felt like it was joke portions are RIDICULOUSLY SMALL and OVER PRICED... Smh. I really have no words for this place I was NOT impressed meat was flavorless and the portions were so ridic. small that I was still pretty hungry. Not sure I will ever come back just dissapointed all around.

It was ok. The portion were small and the meat was over season. First time there but wasn't to thrilled, the prices were descent for some of the items on the menu

My wife and I came to this restaurant for our date night and I'm glad we were hungry because if we weren't we probably would have sent the food back. The prices are reasonable but the food has no flavor I'm giving it two stars because it was semi clean and the service was good.

I used to eat here once in a while because it is close to home. It seems to me that the quality of the food is declining. The portions are small compared to other Mexican restaurants I visit. On my last visit the rice was under cooked (a little crunchy) and the steak was over cooked and had little flavor. The best thing on my combo platter was the guacamole tostada. The price for a glass of soda is ridiculously high considering that they don't give free refills. The salsa is good and the service is pleasant.

Food was great, portions just right, the atmosphere and room temperature didn't fit too well into a spicy hot dish repertoire though. Will go there again ;-)

When I lived in the city, I came here often. I had forgotten about this place and was in the neighborhood. Carne Tampiquena (see pic) dinner delicious. Good quantity, good quality, good service. Love, Love Love. So good to rediscover a long lost friend. Cleaned my plate.

Not good at all. Ordered two burritos to go. Every bite included hard chunks of fat. Theres nothing that ruins a burrito like low quality meat. Ate maybe a quarter of it and threw it out. $9 for a six inch burrito of this caliber is a rip off. Only positive is the owner seemed really nice. Friend recommended this place. He is not a friend anymore.

I was hungry, left hungry. Horrible experience, had a Long Island without coke. The server served my drink in a margarita glass.. Had a sip, and tasted the pure sweet & sour mix. I let him know that I thought he had given me a margarita instead. He had the audacity to tell me that I was wrong, that he had given me what I had ordered. The thing is that he didn't mix the drink, he just poured it on the glass so all the mix was at the bottom. Go figure. I hate when people mess with my drinks.

This place is great! Tacos are delicious and the Margaritas are very good. It's not often you get great Mexican food and they're not BYOB. Their salsa is also perfect!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
