The Village Squire McHenry Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

Went in for dinner this past Saturday and left with mixed feelings. The renovations look very nice and the guitarist is always great. My wife had the Filet brochette and I had the Prime Rib grinder. Started out with Saganaki that is always great. Both of our entrees were overly salty and garlicky for our tastes and the Prime Rib grinder was a tad small. They are now getting $7.25 for a 24 oz. draft and that easily the most expensive draft beer in town however it was very cold and very good. Service was prompt but officious and nowhere near personal. We felt a bit like we were being rushed. Overall our visit was just OK.

I had a cheeseburger for lunch here. It's pretty hard to mess up a cheeseburger....but possible as it turns out. The food was just kind of dry and sad. Slooooooow service. Soup of the day is french onion, but if you want the cheese on top it costs extra....wow. Oh yeah, no more free popcorn since the machine is "broken". It was pretty cheap though, so there's that.

So many people from McHenry rant and rave about this place and I just don't get it. Service is pretty bad--there are one or two good servers Food is bland.--except the flaming cheese and popcorn Drinks are crappy--you hardly get any booze Management is terrible--anyone I know who has worked here hates the boss and the things he tries to get away with Don't work here, don't eat here--McHenry is starting to expand on restaurants, so go somewhere new or head out to Crystal Lake :)

Good service and food is standard bar food. Safe meal with options to choose. Salads were 2 portions. 1/2 burger good deal on a pretzel bun but they seemed to overcook medium. Get the saganaki.

Awful that's all I can say this place hasn't change and I don't think it ever will! My son ordered Mac and cheese simple right and yes it was Kraft Mac and cheese but even at that I shouldn't be served dried over cooked that my kid almost cracks a tooth!! Now I know almost every mom out there has over heated Mac and cheese but have you served it that way? So me to the waitress..this Mac and cheese is awful it's all dried out..waitress: "yeah it looked crappy when I brought it out" Me: then why did you serve it? Waitress: "oh we can't tell the kitchen staff what to do." Me: okay so you have a manger right you can't tell them to tell the kitchen staff!?? So waitress I hope you are happy with your tip..complaints need to go to your kitchen staff for making crappy food!

Don't ever get carry out here! They will forget at least one entree or appetizer. We've gotten carry out from them about 6 times now. Literally every time they forget to put something in the bag!!! It's crazy!

Went for lunch on 1/22. Not busy, I just missed a large group. They left as I entered. Ordered a beer, and a grilled chicken on a pretzel bun, with steak fries which amounted to 13. I opted for no avacodo, and no mayonnaise. I don't eat it or like it-and it's No Bueno for my cholesterol. Order came and was dry, and tasteless. The very arrogant and condescending bartender asked how it was, I just shrugged and said, OK being polite. She says, " would have been better with the mayonnaise and avocado." As she walked off. Yes, I'm sure it would have covered the flavorless of the dry chicken very well. I couldn't eat anymore of it, paid and went to get something I could eat and enjoy. I'm odd, I like to enjoy 10 dollar sandwiches. If you like arrogance topped with zero flavor.. this is your place.

If you like moldy bread you will like this place 3 times we had gotten moldy burger bun and the service is horrible.

We love the food at the Squire... great burgers and steak fries and their Saganaki is the best! Unfortunately, the noise level since they took down the storage over the bar area has gotten louder, so choose to be seated in one the side areas, away from the bar and the really loud music on Friday and Saturday nights.

This one star is a negative one star. Went on a sunny Saturday afternoon instead of seating us in natural lighting we were seated in the darkest section of the restaurant, we will call this the leper colony, next to a woman that could not control her Flatulence. Natalie our server had no personality whatsoever and actually seemed upset with us when we told her that we were given a filthy napkin. Burger was raw we asked for medium. Salt and pepper tops were not secured on the bottles and the fish tasted like it had been caught in 1862 and frozen since then. We actually looked around for hidden cameras thinking that this was all a big joke with the joke being that we stopped in here for lunch!! Take my recommendation go to the KFC across the street!!!

Haven't been here in a loooooong time, but a recent trip home led to a few visits and with each visit we had fast, friendly service and were served tasty food. Ingredients were fresh, prepared well and all the diners with me were satisfied. Burgers, salads, sandwiches - they do the basics well. Love the atmosphere here and was truly happy to be back after so many years.

We started out with cold soup which we could not eat. I also noticed a table on the other side of the room having the same problem. Sent it back and the waitress said she did not know what was going on in the kitchen. That to me is a very bad sign. Next the main course the Greek salad had no anchovies on it even though the menu said it was to come with them. My prime rib was ok but not great. The stuffed baked potato was terrible. I do not understand how this place is always packed every time I go it is terrible. Have not been here for years and have no intention of going back!

Good half price burgers. A lil over cooked. I ordered medium rare got medium. Excellent waiter. 2 people eating for $17 on half price burger night..with endless ice tea. Not bad.

Love this place because of the atmosphere. I hate bad service and bad food, I am the first to complain about it. Never have thoughts like that at the squire nor do I object to the food. I get the Ruben or ribeye with steak fries cooked perfectly. Best food in Mchenry unless we bring back Dunhills. I hate you Applebee's! And Outback is cheap meat with microwaved sides.

So, I've been to the Squire off and on for the last 12 - 15 years. Never great, at times incredibly bad, ok for "in a pinch" because you can't think of where else to go. The boyfriend refused to go back after a really AWFUL fish fry experience last year. Then I got some coupons in March and we decided to give it one more try. Yes, the decor is weird, but I like that, and they have upped the wattage on the bulbs so you can see your food. I call that an upgrade! Does the folk singer entertain? OH YEAH! Even if you're not a fan of Neil Diamond you can have some fun with it. The highlight of the night - the thing that will keep us going back- our waiter, Burgen was FANTASTIC! No, I don't know him. No, this is not a plant review to further his career. He was just plain perfect. His manner, his attention to detail, his attitude - everything we could ask for, and I was in the restaurant business so I'm pickier than most. When we stopped the manager to compliment his work, she almost seemed surprised to be getting a compliment and not a complaint! We will go back and ask for Burgen every time. Oh, the food? Major upgrade!! It was 100% better than our last visit. The stuffed mushroom apps were delicious, my Spinach Bleu Chicken was fabulous, and the Chicken P arm was excellent. Portions big enough for even my super eater boyfriend (who always cleans his plate) to take half of it home! Yes, go to the Squire. It's changed; and all for the better!

There's an old saying that the jack of all trades is the master of none. That's what I ways think when I eat at the squire. There's nothing exceptional about the food, but everything is decent. The redeeming grace is their Mai Tais, and $8.99 burgers on Mondays. Free popcorn got them an extra star for sure. The just did some cosmetic updates, and I'm looking forward to sitting out on their new patio next summer.

Myself and my fiance LOVE going to the place! The music is awesome, it creates that perfect background noise effect without being overwhelming... The food is delicious with generous portions. My fiance jokingly nicknamed the chicken fingers I love to order, "chicken thumbs" because they are so large! Service is generally great, the managers are always walking around to make sure everything is going smoothy.

Two words RUM BARRELS That is all you really need to know about the 'Squire. I haven't eaten here in a really long time. Lately, its been for appetizers and cocktails. Which have always been good. The Squire starts you off with a bowl of popcorn and a huge menu. The prices are very reasonable and there is always a good selection of specials. After 4 and before 6pm on the weekdays are a nice time to go. It's still calm where you can have a conversation and cocktails before it gets too busy. If you find yourself there and thirsty for a drink, I strongly suggest a rum barrel, you won't regret it....well maybe if you have 4-5 of them.

When I was a kid, my family would hit up this place quite frequently and all of us kids would grin ear-to-ear when the waitress delivered our kiddie-cocktails in the cute little mason jars with a cherry and an orange wedge along with a bowl of popcorn. At the time, there were hardly any restaurants in the area (wait, there still aren't many restaurants in the area!) so this was THE place to go. Now that I've moved away from McHenry and experienced all kinds of different restaurants, my view of Village Squire has gone down a little. The last few times I've been there, service is slow, the food is just ok, and the live music has been nothing short of horrendous (and I love music). However, due to the fact that I have many great memories of family dinners at the good ole' Squire, I'll give the place 3 stars. There's definitely better out there though...

Pretty good food for money. service was good. Cocktails were tasty, although I don't prefer the plastic glasses. Definitely one of the better places for a buck. Will go there again!!

This is kind of a "we got everything" restaurant. They don't really seem to specialize in any one particular thing, and to that regard they don't do any one thing exceptionally well. They do start you off with some popcorn, and the prices are reasonable. Basically this is a place you can feel comfortable taking anyone knowing that there will be something on the menu they'll like.

Average: the one word that pretty much sums up the Squire. The food, the service, the atmosphere are all pretty generic and mediocre. Nothing horrible here and nothing great. Always an adequate "plan C" backup.

I have been going to the village squire in Crystal Lake since I was a little kid. I have been the one in Mchenry a few times over the years. Just had dinner there last week, Monday, and it was a very pleasant experience. If you know the squire you know about the popcorn and Mia Tia's. If you haven't been there, it is definitely worth a try. Monday is half price burger night which is a great deal. The burger at the Squire are really good. They also have a really good beer special on Monday's, I was just there and I can't remember it...I think it was $2 pints. Either way you can have a good burger, fries, and a beer for cheap. I went with two friends and our bill was under $30 bucks.

I used to love The Squire however since the new management took over the Mchenry restaurant it has suffered greatly. The food quality and the atmosphere we loved is gone. On Fridays you will get BLOWN OUT OF YOUR SEATS from the LOUD music the waitress couldn't hear our order until the folk singer stopped playing JESUS this is supposed to be enjoyable dinner music not a rock concert it was only 8:00 PM . There were lots of drunk people everywhere staggering around the bar area and bathrooms. I asked the waitress if the music could be turned down just a "smidge" so we could talk at our table and hear each other without screaming... She sent over the manager and when we complained about the music level he said YEAH he is kinda loud isn't he? I said this is stupid the waitress couldn't even hear us giving her our order,,,Then the manager went and turned the level down much to the delight of most of the people trying to eat most people even clapped and said THANK YOU, MY GOD !!!!....however that lasted only 3 songs then the musician turned it up even louder than it was before ... we had had enough we got our check and left with our food in doggy bags never finishing our drinks or getting desert we had planned on ...our ears rang for like 15 minutes after we left that place it was ridiculous !!!!. I hear Crystal lake location is still the best one to go to and its much more intimate and laid back as they all used to be. We will give it a try, in the past it was always nice just a bit out of our way to drive to. Definitely we will not be going back to McHenry Squire anytime soon....BOO to the new management your killing that place, it used to be packed every night...and the food was better... they even got rid of the pizza they were famous for...REALLY???

I wish there was a zero star option worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant how do you run out of prim rib before 7pm on a Saturday night witch by the way they are known for and it was the special we got up and left would never go back do not recommend at all

Just had a terrific party with my nursing staff. The waitress was terrific. The bartender was amazing. This was a great way to spend an evening. The meals were all perfectly prepared.

If you are looking for a quiet place on a Friday night to eat this is not it. A popular place with tables crammed everywhere. Decor is comfortable and warm - brick and wood. Live music, one guy on the guitar, was a nice touch. Service was pretty good. Last time I was here was at least 10 years ago, I remember the portions being bigger. I had spanikopita and salad. Salad was nice and crisp and fresh, house dressing was a very bland vinagarette. The filo dough on the spanikopita was not crisp enough. Greek type menu with lots of selections. I also had the warm baklava with ice cream for dessert. On the whole, not spectacular, but adequate. Would I come back? Probably not.

This place is indeed a weird mix, as Steve R. said. The name and the decor suggest a medieval theme/English pub-style casual dining, but throw in a full-service bar in the center of the restaurant, and give it family friendly touches (free popcorn, kids menu). Consider the wide variety of dishes on the menu and it's downright schizophrenic. Burgers, ribs, prime rib/steaks, pizza and a number of Greek dishes: gyros, saganaki, spankopita, grecian style salmon, etc. From looking at the website, you see Village Squire is owned by a Greek family (aha!). It's also part of a chain - one of 4 in the Fox Valley (West Dundee, Crystal Lake, South Elgin host the others). All in all - not bad. We went here at the request of my 70-year-old mother in law, and it's definitely a place your folks would like. Our food was fine. No complaints about my mushroom/swiss burger. My husband had the prime rib grinder, which he said was overcooked, but still juicy. Service was good; waitress checked on us often, good about offering refills. We weren't charged for my toddler's milk! My complaints: we were in the no-smoking section, but could smell smoke from the bar anyway. And we were in for a surprise when we got the bill. Our total was $38.27 (not bad at all). At the bottom of the receipt was this: Suggested 15% Gratuity: $5.74 Suggested 20% Gratuity: $7.65 WTF. Tacky, tacky, tacky.

I have been here 2-3 times, the place is never packed, the food is run of the mill good. I like the decor inside. The service is ok, no complaints. An all around good average place.

I admit it, I'm a sucker for places with that dark, woody vibe a la Jake's Pizza, Barnaby's, and the like. This one is no exception. It's a wierd mix between dive bar, pizzeria, and brewpub. Me likey. The service is generally good and fast, the food is just fine (if you want top shelf then don't go to a brewpub in McHenry), and the ambiance is lively but not roaringly loud. Plus there's popcorn, which always scores points in my book. I come to dinner with my folks here somewhat regularly and it's always a pretty good time. Sometimes they have live music, as in a guy or two with acoustic guitars playing stuff like Neil Young and whatnot.

Nothing special. Nice decor. Don't order a steak there, they don't know how to cook it. I ordered mine medium rare and it came out medium well. I told the waitress and she didn't seem to care. With so many other options in McHenry, we don't go to The Squire often.

I go here only for the saganaki. The rest of the food here is pretty bland. I have to admit though, the unlimited refills of popcorn they bring to the table is pretty nice. Best. Saganaki. Ever. though. Get it!!

I've never had a bad meal at the Squire. I've eaten here several times and happened to be driving by while deciding where to go for lunch when I saw their sign advertising $4.99 lunches. Turns out they offer quite a few sandwiches and salads for $4.99. I had a cheeseburger with fries, coleslaw and a cup of soup. Everything was very good, the service was top notch. Thank you Village Squire for offering a great lunch at a great price! I'm going to make this one of my regular stops for lunch.

I've been coming to the Village Squire for a while now, alot of my work lunches are held at the squire but unfortunately every time Im done at village squire I have such an upset stomach and Im not the only that experiences this, My whole office of 30+ People have the same issue every time we go there!, Including friends and family we always joke that they must be putting laxatives in their food or maybe its their oild something in there is not right, something the food department should look at.

I've been here a few times. Each time the food and music has gone from bad to worse. The service Is not good. And when it is the food sucks! I don't plan on ever going back. I can't believe it's still open. The place is a joke!

Just your basic semi-local restaurant, Me and my girlfriend go there every so often. on its best day its decent.

The three stars says it all. It's not anything spectacular. Very basic food choices you can get at a lot of other places, which are usually a lot better. I normally get either the club sandwich or a burger. They've never been terrible, but again, I've had better at other places. The popcorn is nice and the service is usually friendly, but I certainly think I've outgrown it. From what I recall we used to love going there for the flaming saganyaki, but as of late, the draw of flaming cheese has been lost. Maybe lunch is great, I haven't been there for it so I can't rate it. Nevertheless, Village Squire is a typical 3star.

    (3)
  • Jim T.

Still good food, it has dropped in quality since the last time I was there so I would say try it to see if you like it. Attention to detail is gone as the server forgot to bring the little things like SILVERWARE AND NAPKINS (am I supposed to eat with me hands). Can I have some ketchup for my fries..Yes it's the little things that can make the bid difference. Oh yea....they had live music the night we were there. Would it be wrong to pay the guy NOT to sing?
