I have been a fan of these since I lived in Austin. I got the Veggie melt with frisco sauce which was yummy. However, the salt vinegar fries were just ok, they should have been better tossed in the seasonings. I really liked my chocolate strawberry shake. For about $10 person, it isn't a bad fast food stop.

Steak 'n Shake recently introduced their new Veggie Melt. As a vegetarian I have not had many options at Steak 'n Shake. I used to order the grilled cheese. The new Veggie Melt is delicious!! Buttery bread, roasted mushrooms, fresh onions and guac. Yum!!

I can't fault Steak 'n Shake because their food and shakes has always been consistently Steak 'n Shake - good greasy grub - but we will always remember the service from this location. And not in a good way. After an EIU football game, my family and I pulled up in the drive thru and ordered 5 small shakes. We were tired and wanted something for the 3 hour ride back. At the end of our order, we were told, "you know - that's going to take awhile" in a very sarcastic tone - not in a "we just want you to know it might take a while" sort of way. We were all a little taken aback. I realize that the place was busy but why would an employee want to turn a customer experience sour like that? Maybe the service is better inside . . .

Steak and shake, they haven't changed much in decades which can be a good thing. Usually get the chili-5way and an order of fries. Probably the only 24hr. restaurant left in Mattoon.
