Years back when I lived in Alaska, I read Roger Ebert's blog post about Steak & Shake ("Car, Table, Counter, or Takhomasak"), and how it epitomized his childhood in Champaign-Urbana. Even though I'm not really a burger person, I decided then and there that I would visit one as soon as I got the chance. Lo and behold, nearly a half-decade later, en route to our new home in Chicago, my husband and I stayed at a hotel that was right next to a S&S. We went in with a certain amount of trepidation, wondering if it would live up to Ebert's declaration of being the best fast food in the world. Luckily, we weren't disappointed, even if we were slightly surprised at the classiness of the 1950s atmosphere - table service? Tuxedoed waitstaff? At a fast food joint? The burgers came in all sorts of delicious-looking varieties, and were quite excellent. And even though I'm not really a milkshake person either (sacrilege to a Midwesterner, I'm sure!), I had to admit that my mint-cookie shake was pretty damn delicious. I'm rather glad that there aren't any of these in Chicago proper, as I suspect my diet would suddenly include rather a lot of unhealthy meals if I lived nearby. As it is, it'll have to be a treat for when we go explore the rest of the state.

Ridiculous customer service, we got stuck in some construction traffic and called several times to change the pick up time of our already paid for large order, phone rang over two minutes, then once it hit three minutes of ringing without an answer we just gave up and waited to see if there was anything they would do at the store, and guess what, they didn't do a thing, they said we should have called to let them know! Even showed them the screen shot with there stores phone number and how long it was ringing, even showed them the call history on phone. They say it doesn't prove anything. Um ok. Last time we will stop for food there! I intend to take this matter up with corporate, it's not about the food, it's about the terrible customer service! The rudeness is unnecessary and if you are a business and have a phone, I'm pretty sure someone should be able to answer the phone, maybe a supervisor or manager if all staff is occupied!

Seriously the worst Steak n Shake ive ever had and i gave them 2 seperate chances! Both times they got the order wrong and even incorrectly made the burger that ended up in my bag. The staff doesn't care about customer satisfaction and the manager hides when confronted. The food isn't even good or hot, if you can, AVOID this location!

The boyfriend and I were driving up to Chicago, so this was a perfect lunch spot (especially with the gas station right there). I was very impressed with how clean the restaurant was, and our waitress was very friendly. I had a hot dog and onion rings, which were delicious. The boyfriend had the California burger and some chili, which looked good too. We also got a milkshake to go, which was stiff competition for Chick-Fil-A's. I'd never been to a Steak & Shake, but I would definitely go back!

Well if you are on the road and need food, I guess this is a place. Grilled cheese was tasty and the fries are fun to eat b/c they are teeny tiny. Of the whole menu I think it is funny we had neither a steak or shake....Rather grilled chicken and a grilled cheese...Go US!

The hippest hangout in town. Not as dirty as everyone else claims. Wasn't top notch S&S but it got the job done.

I'm took one star off because I ordered a chili dog and asked for nothing to be on it but chili. I got chili, cheese and a whole lot of onions, my other food was excellent. Very fast, hot and hubby ate the chili dog and loved it. If you're ordering take out I suggest you just check it to make sure it's right.

The owner and/or manager of this restaurant should be ashamed. We stopped on our drive back north because we all enjoy Steak and Shake, normally. However, this place was absolutely disgusting. The tables and seats were dirty, the floors were filthy and covered with trash. Nearly all the wait and kitchen staff looked as if they had been on a 3-day bender; disheveled clothes, greasy hair, etc. I could go on and on, but the simple point is this place shameful.
