I love this suchi place!! Its all you can eat sushi and its always freshly prepared. You have to order it so it's not like a buffet at all. The atmosphere is really cute and its a true Japanese feel to it. They usually play Japanese music which is nice. The service is usually good and unless its super busy the wait for your food is not bad at all. You do have to pay for any sushi you dont eat so be careful not to over order just because you can. They have some Japanese pops that you can purchase as well so its really cool. The price is not bad at all 20 dollars a person which considering sometimes you can pay 10 dollars for one roll at other places, is not bad at all.

I came for the udon. Noon on a Tuesday was understandably slow for an all-you-can-eat sushi establishment, especially if you note the gray skies and fifty degree temp in the middle of May. The server was a nice guy. The udon felt comfortable. Like his mom was ladling the stuff into bowls in the back. I got what I came for.

I tried the all you can eat option and it was okay. It was good for Gurnee, but it just made me miss the better AYCE joints in the city. For the nigiri, the fish pieces are small and the roll sizes are smaller than what I am used to too. Some of the fish wasn't always the freshest with the AYCE menu... I will only come here for AYCE sushi again if I am desperate for AYCE sushi and don't feel like driving towards the city.

Had the All You can Eat sushi. I was not impressed by the selection at all. You are given a piece of paper with different sushi choices on it and you mark the quantity of each type that you'd like. The paper is then taken to the chef who prepares it up for you fresh. I would've like to have seen pics of what the other choices that I was unfamiliar with where. Perhaps I would've been more inclined to try something new. The service was good and the atmosphere was nice and quiet. It's worth a shot unless you get a rec from someone else on a better place.

The all you can eat is a great deal just make sure you eat everything you order or they charge you extra. I love going here with friends we always have a good time here. The Chicago roll is super yummy!

Awesome place for All You Can Eat Sushi for just $20! It is fresh and great portions! Amazingly the place allows you to eat as much of the goodness as you can take. Just expect to eat all of the sushi. They have $1 penalty for each one you don't eat. So don't waste your food!

  • Tinotenda S.

I'm a fan of the unlimited Sushi for 14.95 or 19.95, I'm yet to find another place that offers such a deal. The sushi is freshly made and you can order more as you eat. Plenty of options which means you get the bang for your buck. You have to finish all the Sushi or else a charge is placed, despite that really good deal

This is a ripoff for all you can eat sushi. I came here with my fiancé today for lunch and ordered a eel and avocado roll along with squid, tuna, salmon, and octopus sushi. Their roll was mediocre. Nothing special. Boring looking and boring taste. The sushi on the other hand was a disaster. The octopus was not fresh and the size of the rice was quadruple the size of other places' all you can eat sushi. So beware. I came wanting to enjoy some sushi but instead all I got was rice rice rice and rice. And if you don't finish all your rice they will charge you extra. For service, you hardly ever get a reply from the waiters. When one of the waiter brought us our food and we said thank you to him, he just walked away without any response. Three times. So overall we would not come here again. Mostly due to the low food quality.

This place is awesome went here with my daughter's and husband. The staff was very friendly and food was fabulous. It was a great deal add an awesome selection. Can't wait to go back again for husbands birthday. One of the best restaurants I have ever been to.

Food is taking forever. Sushi kushi is so much better. Expensive but worth the price.

We heard about the opening of this restaurant and its past affiliation with Yoshi in Delavan, WI. We had the all you can eat, and my husband's from SoCal so he can be pretty picky. It was a delightful experience. Fast service. Good food. Fairly priced. We ate at the sushi bar and also ordered the caterpillar roll, which isn't on the all you can eat menu, but definitely worth it! We'll be back next week!

Meh. I have had sushi from the Cherry Hill mall in NJ for less and it tasted better. The food left a bad aftertaste in my mouth as well as bad gas. What should I expect for 19.95 ayce sushi? I came here with a friend who recommended the place. The servers and staff looked like they just rolled out of bed.

Four stars are for good restaurants, five are for that personal touch. Quality food with a decent atmosphere can be found anywhere, and doesn't have to be pretentious. Toshi is a perfect example. They have a lunch and dinner all you can eat, which can always be a red flag, but they do it with grace and ease. The food is always of a carefully prepared variety, and this family run business truly does appreciate you every time you walk through the door. I highly recommend the nigri and the rolls, specifically the mountain or caterpillar rolls. Although a little hidden. You won't be disappointed by the sushi or the hibachi. I bring my family of five here on a regular basis, and sometimes I will sneak out to enjoy ten minutes of sushi bliss. You are never made to feel uncomfortable in this establishment, and they will take care of the customer first. If there were one critical aspect, it would be that the good atmosphere isn't quite consistent throughout the dining area. Thank you Toshi, you will have my business as long as I am in the area.

  • Chris R.

Haven't had anything I didn't like excellent food, the white sauce ginger sauce teriyaki sauce all crazy good. Hibachi chicken or steak can't beat it! Also the salad with it comes with the best ginger dressing I've ever had period!

  • Rebecca L.

Huge rip off! I came for the all you can eat lunch sushi. If you love rice it is a great deal! Tiny paper thin slivers of fish and huge amount of rice! Leaving hungry after paying $15 plus tax! I am in the area every week - I will never return here!

  • Bree C.

Very nice, fast, and inexpensive! 20$ for all you can eat sushi! The California Roll I got was very fresh but too fishy for me, though my date LOVED his food.

Recently had dinner here based on a few word of mouth reviews. Had the AYCE sushi and was underwhelmed. The seafood was fine but the rice was either old or poorly prepared. I've had worse at buffets, but this was buffet caliber while ordering ala carte. Based strictly on the food I MIGHT return if I was in the area and just had to have sushi, but the service was also a bit lacking. It was an hour before we were even asked if we wanted to order a second round or have a drink refill, plates were not bussed from the table, and the resteraunt was not exactly busy late on a Wed evening. In short if you don't mind supermarket level maki rolls and service isn't an issue, you might like the place, me I'll keep looking.

  • Rameela N.

amazing sushi place, loved the selection of sushi. to order all you can eat, they give u a list of stuff you want and number it on how many orders you want. for you to be able to order again while on the all u can eat, you MUST eat all what you ordered before or they will charge you extra. but waitress was a little slow on getting us refill drinks other than that, awesome service.

I'm still new to sushi, so I'm not sure how credible my review is, but for the most part, I liked this restaurant. I thought the spicy tuna roll and clear broth soup (not miso) was good, the service was quick, informative and friendly. The gyoza, something I'm quite familiar with, was some of the best I've had, seriously delicious and delicate. This was my fave item of the night, for sure. I've been craving them since the first and only time I visited the restaurant. I definitely plan to go back for more gyoza! The chicken teppenyaki with noodles was kind of disappointing. The chicken itself was yummy, but I didn't think it came together as a complete dish. The Japanese sodas with keys that make a ball drop and pop, were kinda fun, despite how painful that prolly sounds. Ha! I suppose the price was average, but I'm not sure I thought the chicken teppenyaki was worth the $12 price tag, even with soup and salad. Chef Sonny was quick to answer my sushi questions, and guide me to selections that might best suit me. There was a cute young girl, the owner's daughter perhaps, that checked on us, and danced around and was quite engaging. I did really enjoy the atmosphere and intimate setting; it had a nice, casual but warm and modern vibe. Although I LOVED that gyoza, I haven't found myself rushing back just yet- even though, the gyoza alone deserve 4 stars. I will definitely return to explore more sushi. Stay tuned. ;)

Not good at all... thin slices of salmon with to much rice just that did it for me all tge rolls were really basic... all you can eat menu has nothing good.. Kawa in grayslake is so far my favorite $25.00 AYCE but worth it. Never again coming here

  • Caitlin S.

Love love love the sushi here! It is phenomenal. The staff is friendly and accommodating. My only complaint is the price. It is extremely expensive for all you can eat. And they charge if you don't finish everything on plate. Other than that I love this place and will continue coming here!

    (4)
  • Jasmine B.

Nice sized rolls. Enjoyed their lunch specials. 2 rolls 7.95 3 rolls 10.95 and it comes with either miso or salad. I didnt try it, but they also offer all you can eat, you pick the rolls or sushi, thoa option also includes appetizers. Its close to work and home, so i will be back!

    (4)
  • Heather M.

This place has good sashimi and a nice atmosphere. Even though it was busy we got a table right away. Definitely a good place to come to for lunch or dinner. I only got their Sashimi and Miso soup but I had no complaints! They were quick and responsive. I didn't have to wait forever to get served. Prices are pretty good for Sashimi you get 3 pieces per order ($4 an order). For those who don't like sushi or sashimi, they have a habachi grill so everyone in your group will be taken care of.

  • Rose J.

I went here for their 2 roll and salad lunch special. I ordered the shrimp tempura and the crab roll, both were realty good. So I decided to bring my friends here for their cheap buffet. The manager came to our table and explained that what we don't eat, we will have to pay for. Our sushi was ok, the rice tasted like there was soap in it. Or ruined the sushi and it was consistent with each roll. The appetizers were really good, esp the chicken potstickers and egg roll. I may I go back for the lunch combo, but def not the buffet. The salad that comes with the lunch combo is fresh and the dressing is amazing (ginger honey). Oh and if you ask for any sauces, they will charge you extra!!

  • Michael M.

Three stars, here's why: Good service, good rolls, nice ambience. The sashimi pieces were small and barely any radish. They advertise all you can eat so that's probably explains the small pieces but I was not eating all you can eat. Radish was thin which is good but short pieces. You'd remove your fish from the soy sauce and get spattered (I'm picky about the way radish is cut). The way radish is cut or carrots is very important. The caterpillar roll was pretty good and the sky beauty roll was ok. Miso soup had a ton of tofu in it and a watered down flavor but it was good. No salad with my sashimi, had to order separate but the salad was pretty good. My gf ordered a side of fried rice and by the time she got it, we were rounding the corner so to speak. Tempura ice cream was good, I cannot imagine how you can mess that up. All in all for the price I paid, sorry, I do NOT recommend this place. #overpriced and underfed. Another thing fishy that I will look into is the name Toshi is similar to a place in Delavan WI called Yoshi, same looking menus. I'll follow up.

Excellent! Excellent! Maki. I was very hesitant to try sushi in Gurnee, but I'm glad I jumped on board. This place is set back behind Golden corral and hard to spot. The entire staff is Japanese/Asian decent, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The setting is quaint and nice mood lighting. Nice for a date or just dinner after walking all over Great America. I will definitely be back! *Caterpillar roll is the bomb!

    (5)
  • Juhui S.

Do not understand what the big hype is about. The fish is mediocre. The sushi rice was bland. Sure the prices were cheap but you're going tk get what you paid for. It was just meh. The gyoza is of course the frozen kind that you just heat up in the microwave. The unagi was not good at all.. Sushi definitely had more rice than fish ratio. You can find better sushi elsewhere.

A reasonably priced sushi restaurant? With great rolls and nigiri? IN THE SUBURBS?! I've hit the m-f'in jackpot! After frequenting several sub-par sushi places in the Lake County area, I was starting to go through an existential crisis. Am I turning into one of those anti-suburb Chicagoans? Was my ex-boyfriend right about me turning into a snob? Will I ever find a decent place to satisfy my sushi cravings? Tucked away in the heart of the tourist trap of Gurnee lies Toshi. I try to steer clear of rolls that have mayo, cream cheese, or are deep fried so my favorites are the Sky Beauty roll and the ebi or unagi nigiri. All the fish has been fresh and service has been on point. Skip all the chain restaurants in this area and get to Toshi ASAP!

  • Sofiya C.

Sushi was ok... Def not the best but not gross or anything. Tasted fresh. The gripe is the service. My husband got his food half hour before I did and the order was put in at the same time! Don't they know people go out to eat and want to eat "together" vs staring at one person eat while waiting for your own food. My water was never refilled... I sat there with an empty glass most of dinner. There was one waiter for the entire dinning room... The all you can eat is ok, no sashimi on it and the rolls are pretty standard and basic. The more expensive rolls are filled with cream cheese and rice more so then actual fish. I think this place was a one and done for us unfortunately. Still looking for a favorite sushi place around the area.

Just got home from this place. Went for dinner on Valentine's Day without a reservation. They were really busy, but we managed to get a table without too long of a wait. The staff was fabulous. The AYCE was quite a deal, so we also ordered some sashimi from the regular menu too. Looking forward to going back!

  • Skye H.

I'm planning to come back! I was looking for AYCE sushi and since this restaurant was within walking distance of my Hampton Inn it was a no-brainer. I was concerned about the litany of negative reviews, but I gave it a try based on its proximity. I thought the place was great. The wait staff was not spectacular, the fish wasn't the best I've ever had and the AYCE menu was a limited selection. With that said, the food was tasty, the sushi chef was very nice and it took all of three minutes for the chef to deliver my order (at the sushi bar). Considering the price, you cannot go wrong here. I had some concerns about over-ordering and ended up placing three orders - each time for a roll and three nigiri. Since they're so fast on the delivery, it made sense to order a little at a time. The Sky roll was great, the Rainbow roll was much better than I expected and the Boston roll was good. Of the nigiri, the white tuna was my favorite. The rolls had a thin layer of rice but the nigiri had a healthy amount. This is a great place to get sushi. I'm so glad I found it and I'm coming here whenever I'm in the area. Yes, you can find better sushi elsewhere, but based on the pricing I recommend coming here!

Toshi is one of our favorite restaurants, the food is delicious, and more importantly the service is outstanding. This evening we decided to sit at the Sushi Bar and I have to say it was definitely worth it. We got to see up close and personal how the sushi is prepared as well as talking with Chef Sonny. We tried a variety of rolls, and each one was delicious. The Volcano roll is always a favorite as well as the Spicy Tuna appetizer. I think we almost tried every special roll that was on the menu tonight. I have read several posts about pricing, I guess those who complain about prices being high really don't get out much are understand the cost of fresh seafood, needless to say, the prices are no different than any other sushi restaurants I have eaten in, and the way I look at it, you get what you pay for.

  • Meg T.

Save yourself a trip and get sushi from the grocery store. Horrible sushi with way too much soggy rice and bad service (waited more than 50 minutes for 3 rolls with no explanation of the wait)

    (1)
  • M A.

Disappointed. We ordered all you can eat sushi. In the menu, there were Yakitori and Miso soup so we had one each. Yakitori means grilled chicken but they steamed or boiled or microwaved or whatever not grilled at all. Just added Yakitori flavored sauce on it. Miso soup was just a Miso flavored hot water with tiny tofu. Nothing taste like miso soup. Fish was not fresh at all. I seriously worried for my stomach after eating. The rice is too tight so as other people mentioned, too much rice on each piece. If you know real Japanese food, never go this place.

  • Daniel M.

Since I am on my phone, I can't type too much but I think my review for Toshi is well due. This place is fantastic! And I mean that. I am very picky with where I get sushi from (for obvious reasons - no one is going to get sushi from the gas station). Sushi is always fresh, chicken and rice are always right out of the kitchen and they are always very kind here. Unlimited Sushi Monday through Friday $14.95 till 3 and $19.95 thereafter. Be warned, you may order as much as you want but make sure you eat what you order though because you pay for what you don't. All in all, I highly recommend Toshi to anyone nearby. Its tucked away behind the Golden Crapell (Correll) so don't get discouraged if you can't find it. 5 stars from me and if I could, I would give a sixth! It isn't easy to get a 5 star rating from me.. the King of Pickyness! Oh.. and remember, if you can't use chopsticks, don't worry! They have forks available for you beginners upon request.

Ordering was easy. Good lunch specials. Food for carrying on my first trip was bad all around. Can't imagine under what circumstances I would return.

Absolutely nothing special, professional or tasty about this experience. The sushi tasted like it came out of a box; like something you'd pick up at Walgreens. We won't be visiting this restaurant again. There is another sushi restaurant up at Grand and 21/Milwaukee on the southeast side of the intersection that was just fantastic! In comparison, this place doesn't exist. Absolutely nothing good to say about this. Move on.

Very clean and spacious. All you can eat lunch and dinner specials are a great deal. I am new water if sushi and rolls. Great place to taste and experience. Fast and friendly service. Everything fresh made-to-order. Note: Order small quantities. Whatever you don't eat you will be charged for. No wasting food here.

Fantastic for its price. The river was a little dry but not to bad. The wait staff was attentive and polite. All told it was a great meal for my wife and I.

I'm giving it a 4 now but previously would have given a solid 2 before (5 months ago)-avg 3. 5 months ago--- High school kids seating us. Overly sauced house salad. So much dressing that you could barely find the lettuce and veggies. On to the rainbow roll. Charging extra to exclude tuna from the roll and substitute for salmon. Most restaurants would make it cheaper or the same price. Atmosphere/ dining experience: cheap looking decor, lighting was bright for that setting, owners children running around and fighting with each other in front of the tables, and long wait for food to come out (15 mins with only 3 other customers in building). Current review--- I decided to give this place another try after the subpar previous visit. Needless to say there were some improvements. Still high school kids doing the seating, but I tried the all you can eat $19.99 dinner special. There is no limit on the salads, edamame, or appetizers (most ayce sushi places put a limit of 1 outside the basic sushi menu). Ikura (salmon roe) was not part of the ayce menu but Masago (flying fish roe) was, so it worked out. I ordered 3 times (2 different rolls each). To be fair The staff kept warning of over-ordering prices. If you didn't eat what you ordered, you would be charged (only for sushi, not salad or other sides). Lighting seemed better, the children seemed to be content playing with iPads in the back near the sushi chef, food came out within 5 mins of ordering. Overall, I would say great price (especially ayce dinner), serve time, fresh fish, nice food presentation, okay atmosphere. If recommend this place to others. I'm still a huge fan of Sushi Thai in LBV/VH and TokioSake in Deer Park.

Gross. The sushi was nothing special. The ceilings were leaking. Bad service. Would not go back here. Everything was fried or had tempura. I love sushi but not from here!

  • Mike M.

The place is always empty, with perhaps one other table. On my fourth venture to the restaurant, I ordered the all you can eat deal as usual, but was feeling very unwell before the food arrived. Needless to say, I was unable to finish my order, and was charged a dollar for all thirteen pieces of uneaten sushi. That is obscene. Most places (even in Las Vegas) charge 40-60 cents per piece, max. Again, I was not new here, so I figured they might cut me a break given the circumstances if I explained it. Nope. Manager was unhelpful. I will not return. As for the food, the sushi is OK, and the rice they use is very good, but they simply use too much of it. The fish is seemingly fresh, but you don't get much in your sushi. Mediocre food and terribly slow service overall.

  • Michael B.

Stopped here since it was very close by to my hotel. I ordered miso soup, and one of their special rolls. The miso soup seemed as if it came out of a box. There was the smallest strand of seaweed I've ever seen, and a scoop of equally sized (most likely freeze dried) tofu blocks. It wasn't the worst tasting broth, but very salty. The specialty roll I ordered was supposed to have a couple kinds of fish in it (shrimp and tuna) but there was barely any to be found. Each piece of fish was super small, and overpowered by something they included with the rice that surrounded the roll. I couldn't really taste any fish (which may have actually been for the better).

I've been coming here since they opened and I will unfortunately never come back after this last experience. As a business owner you should do your best to please your customers. I ordered for pick up a spicy tuna hand roll, a sky beauty roll and a spicy scallop roll but I got the exact opposite.. AND they told me a different total than what the cashier told me over the phone. Sonny the CHEF Obviously doesn't know how to handle an unhappy customer as all he said was ok I'll change it. No , sorry what your supposed to do is comp the meal or offer the free sushi that you messed up, not take the food and offer to exchange it. I didn't have time to sit around and wait for him to fix it. I WAS a regular customer and this should be a wide tell of how this business operates as this Isn't the first time our orders have been messed up. 1 star for the shifty reaction to a messed up order. Never coming back here again.

  • Brooke A.

Very solid sushi joint. Came for a light dinner....probably would give 5 stars for lunch or all you can eat as prices on those are really good for the quality. At 8pm on a Thursday, we were the only people there, so don't let that steer you away. The quality and freshness was perfect. If you are at gurnee mills, check it out. You wont be disappointed.

  • Paul L.

I worry when i see high school kids preparing my sushi. The first thing they need to understand is how to make proper sushi rice. Rice has to be properly seasoned. I ordered chicken teriyaki and it was too salty and not properly seasoned. I should have listened to Juhui who gave this place 2 stars, I'll give it two stars as well, and thats being generous. They should learn to make teriyaki chicken like at Panda Express, yes Panda Express actually makes it better than here. I ordered Nebe Udon, but got Yaki Udon, which is pan fried noodles. Maybe that might have been a fortunate mistake because I would doubt if they can make proper broth. Staff is okay. I would not go back. I always say just because you are Asian does not mean you should be opening an Asian Restaurant, and if you are, stick with the food you know.

I liked it so much the first time I went that I went back 2 days later! I had the Catapiller and the Green Bay roll. My husband had the spicy tuna sashimi and a wisconsin roll. It was very fresh and the atmosphere and the wait staff was very sweet and attentive. I'm ready to go back again!!! I think different rolls are like going to different places and getting "hamburgers" that may taste a little different everywhere you go. If you go one place for sushi and expect the exact thing somewhere else you will be disappointed.

  • Susan M.

My friends and I ordered the all you can eat lunch buffet. One of us left three pieces of sushi on the plate and was charged a dollar extra for each piece of uneaten sushi. I'm sure there are people who abuse the buffet etiquette so the rule is forgivable and it does say on the menu an extra charge will be incurred for uneaten portions, but they should also put the price that will be charged. Additionally, they should offer to wrap the left over sushi to go, after all you paid for it and then some. If it wasn't for fhe attitude / tone we got about the uneaten sushi, then maybe I would come back, I should have read the reviews on Yelp first, more then half of the reviews are gripes about the uneaten food and extra charges.

Everything we had was awesome! What a find in Gurnee! The Mackerel, Tuna, Salmon, Ebi Sweet Shrimp with deep fried heads, seaweed salad, and the scallops were mouth watering! Attention to detail is impressive. Only reason for not giving a five star was that they were missing a couple favorites of ours... Uni and Oyster Shooters. Worth making the trip and sit at the sushi bar and watch the masters at work.

Nice looking restaurant. The miso soup was one of those you take out of a package and add water to it......not good. We had the caterpillar roll. It was yummy. Their thai tea was refreshingly great. We were the last ones to walk in on a sayurday night. We were told (rudely) to order what we wanted because they were closing soon. He mustve been the owner........I wanted to order mochi but I guess ill wait till next time

Okay, went on a Saturday night, prime time.....empty. Not a good sign... In a weird dead spot that no one probably sees behind the Golden corrale. No ambiance that is for sure. Sushi is good, however they are priced too high. Comparable to a fancy Chicago joint. Not tryin to pay $14 a roll in nowheres~ville....and for that price I expect either big pieces or lots or raw fish, neither were present. Theses were nice bite size, no business being priced so high. We had the Tokyo, Wisconsin and a spicy tuna. Some gyoza and no drinks for like 50 bucks....pretty hungry we were still....

The perfect lunch sushi spot!!! I came in for the all you can eat lunch at $14.95. It was fast, delicious, and the staff was very friendly. Portions were a good size and not too big. I ordered the mushroom soup and it was delicious. Also had the spicy tuna and shrimp tempura. Both classics and executed to perfection. Simple, fresh, and super tasty. A little hard to find and not where it says it is on maps. But, still worth searching a bit.

What makes this place a 5 star restaurant is the friendly waitstaff and attentive service. I would like to see this place busy, but on the flip side it is always easy to get a table. I have enjoyed both their sushi and hibachi and would say its up to par with other sushi places in the area. I have not tried the all you can eat, so I cannot comment on the experience others have had. They allow BYOB, which I love. I have brought wine and beer here. Most of all I love supporting a local business!

Fantastic fresh and delicious sushi. This was our first time here and were very positively surprised. The service was very friendly and helpful. Our waiter made a really great recommendation what to try. He also had no problems with switching out ingredients to our request. We had appetizers (edamame and vegetable egg roll) and were very happy. The real jewel of this dinner however was the sushi. It really has been a while since I had such good sushi. I also tried some new rolls that I never had seen before on a menu and was pleasantly surprised.

The best part of Toshi is the "all you can eat" special, of which they offer both lunch and dinner versions. Its affordable & the selection/variety is pretty decent given that its a preset menu. The decor is okay and the service is mixed but overall I have to say I always enjoy myself.

I just had dinner at Toshi, the all you can eat sushi deal, this time without my fiance who is normally with me when I go. But due to dropping her off at the airport I had to satisfy my sushi craving solo tonight. The sushi was great as usual but what caught my attention was how the owner of the restaurant came and asked me why my fiance didnt come along. This led to a conversation about how I had to drop her off at the airport and so on. This gave me the feeling that this place really tries to develop a relationship with their customers which in my opinion is key to getting loyal customers. You don't feel like just a number you know. I mean the food is great but the welcoming feeling from the environment is what's going to make you want to come back and eat in the restaurant. This place is A+ as usual. If you haven't eaten here then you need to!

We came here after a visit to six flags, came for dinner around 7pm. It wasnt too busy and we were seated right away, and the waiter took our order quickly. He kept pushing us to order the gyoza for some reason, but we decided on the tofu and three different rolls. The prices were as expected. For what it was, the meal was okay, but nothing out of the ordinary. We would not come again, but it was not a horrible experience.

I've just recently started coming here and been here around six times now. So far every visit has been very satisfying. The fish is very fresh, the roles are packed nicely so they don't fall apart and the staff is efficient. Most of all, their lunch special, 3 roles for $10 is a great deal!

Wow! What can I say? This place is a hidden gold mine. I've been living in the area for a while and I'm surprised that, as a foodie who goes around to try different restaurants, I didn't find this place earlier! I went on a thursday night. There were not alot of people around when I came and then I started to think of it as a negative sign. The staff is friendly, though the server seems to be a little bit shy but he is okay. He may be a little bit soft spoken but he is very helpful in terms of giving suggestions on which menu items are popular. I had the All You Can Eat sushi for $19.95 (lunch price is $14.95). My impression? Amazing! For an AYCE, good price and a location like this, they serve decent quality sushi! I heard their sushi master chef has been making sushi for over 15 years. Well I can say that this is INDEED the best sushi in the area, better than Hayashi. Staff is great. The place is clean and presentable. I feel comfortable. The food exceeded my expectations! I would give this place 5 stars but something is missing and I don't know what it is, that is why I am going to keep coming back to find out! But don't get me wrong, this is my new favorite sushi place in the area!

I placed an order to go with the lady at the register who was very nice and friendly. After placing my order she advised me that it would be 10min so I sat at the bench....she then asked if I'd like some water while I waited which I thought was a nice gesture. Before I knew it my order was ready...so fast! It was about 5min (: I ordered the Gyoza appetizer and the Maki Combination. They were both delicious and fresh. I will definately be back again!! Overall food was great and service was outstanding!!!

The past two years I went here for my birthday! I love there steak and garlic rice it's to die for! The staff is nice and they take your picture on your birthday have you sign it and post your picture on the front when everyone walks in. It's fun to come back a year later and see it still there!

My review echo's a lot of the same comments made below. Sushi was excellent and service was awful. Came here on a Saturday night with my wife and stood in line at the hostess' station for 5 minutes before anyone spoke to us. After we were seated, the waitress informed us that I could not order the all you can eat because my wife didn't order it as well. When I asked why? She told me that the chef doesn't like it when it's this busy to only do AYCE for one person. Sushi took about 45 mins to receive at my table. Won't come back here and wouldn't recommend this to any of my friends. Spend your money where it is appreciated.

Sushi was a pleasant surprise at Toshi. Our rolls -- "Tokyo" and another special -- were interesting and nicely made. The strip mall location and awkward server took a little away from the experience.

I don't make my way up to gurnee often but for this meal I am glad I did. I came in for a late dinner & right away the staff seated me & was very friendly. I also liked the decor. From the music to the ceiling lamps to the wall decorations & the staffs attire it had a very authentic feel. The waitress brought me a towelette to wipe my hands before the meal. I have never had this done at a sushi restautant & I liked it. I ordered the Spicy Tuna Roll & it was delicious. The sushi & the rice was fresh. Freshness is obviously one of the most important qualities of a restaurant The next most important thing is that the restaurant is clean. This place was spotless I could have ate off of the table. Lastly I was surprised at how nice & friendly the staff was. I walked in right before closing & they didn't act like they were upset. Most places try to rush you out when you walk in right before closing. They were very friendly. Overall I give this place 5 stars & look forward to eating here again

Lets start with I've had a lot of crappy, overpriced sushi lately. BUT NOT HERE! THe all you can eat is killer and they offer it on saturday!!! Score! I was with my bf and his friend/wife. Our party of four was seated promptly and it looked very cozy in there. Plus for being SUPER clean. Like the table was polished clean. We immediately skimmed the all you can eat menu and all started with rolls. I got the shrimp tempura, bf got some octopus sushi and some spicey green roll with wasabi. Our food was killer. Our friends got the chicken tempura (how do more places not have this amazing option!??) which was delicious, and tons of gyoza. It is the BEST I've had at all you can eat places. The dipping sauce was killer too! Sonny (Who through reading other reviews is the head chef) came over to make sure everything was good! Talk about a nice touch when the chef comes out to make sure your enjoying his amazing sushi! I then tried the greenbay roll. O.M.G. BEST thing I've eaten in the realm of deep fried rolls. The sauce was amazing, the roll was perfectly fried and it was HOT when it came to the table. None of this letting the rolls sit around waiting for someone to bring them. I HATE lukewarm rolls. I want it RIGHT now and HOT (if its suppose to be of course :) ) It's probably the best sushi in the Gurnee area. We STUFFED ourselves with all the rolls and pretty much rolled out of there. It's $20 bucks a person for the AYCE which is a deal when you think of how much specialty rolls cost (11-18 usually for only like 8 pieces) I love that they have it on weekends! I think we're going back again this weekend! I can't get that greenbay roll out of my brain! YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY! PS- I didnt run into this over-rice-stuffed roll issue. All the rolls had the perfect about of rice. No one was a nazi about eating all the rolls since they could probably tell we were starving. I dont get some of the negative reviews. You pay for delicious sushi and you get it. Fish isn't cheap so dont order if your not going to eat it duh! I always start with three rolls and go from there. Pace yourselves people!

Came here for lunch and got the all you can eat sushi. Word of advice, don't order too much or be ready to pay! $1 per little roll left behind, I think that's crazy but yet again I'm not too familiar with sushi restaurants. Not much of an atmosphere, and the sushi was just ok, and I didn't feel too well after lunch. Best part about lunch was the service, very friendly people

Nomz! Although our first visit was on Valentine's day-I'm sure this place does great any other day. Food=delicious. The spicy tuna roll and the Gurnee roll were out of this world. Service=a lot to be desired. Short staffed, obscene amount of customers...hard to say. After waiting 10 minutes to be seated, we waited another 15 before being waited on. Plenty of room, just not a lot of help. Definitely will be back, just not on a popular day.

At first, I was very excited to try this sushi place. Then all of the sudden, I was a little disappointed. The staff was very friendly and the prices on the sushi was very reasonable. I only went there 2 times, but the second time, I wanted to make sure that I am satisfied with my sushi order. But then I was not a fond of the taste because I've had better sushi. If I had to compare this to Kawa @ Grayslake, I would go there, since their sushi is phenomenal! I guess sometime I will go here and try more of the rolls. =)

Chef Sonny is a 15 year veteran of sushi restaurants. This is his second establishment; the first is a popular destination Delavan, Wisconsin. With Toshi, he's opened a large, quiet space in the end of a secluded strip mall off Dilley's Road in Gurnee. I've been to Toshi multiple times for lunch and dinner and enjoyed the food each time. The lunch specials are a very good deal with 2 or 3 rolls plus soup or salad. The dinner menu is vast with hot and cold appetizers, chef specials and multiple hot and cold entrees. What is particularly good about Toshi is the quality of the sushi fish, which is delivered daily to the restaurant. Chef Sonny is friendly and it seems that this is a family run restaurant. My party was recognized as returning on the second visit, and Sonny came out and introduced himself to us. My favorite selections would have to be the special rolls, white tuna and salmon sushi, as well as the Unago-Donburi. The spicy tuna recipe is unique to Toshi, as he puts a bit of tempura crunch into the mix. Gurnee needs a superior sushi restaurant and for the quality and value, I'm a regular at Toshi.

Well, I really wanted to like this place. If for no other reason, we need a decent sushi place up here to compete with Hiyashi. I see a few good reviews here...perhaps it was an off night...but what good restaurants have "off-nights"? That said, I was disappointed in this place. Not really knowing the reputation of a new establishment, I won't get sushi right away, but instead order what I would call "staples" of typical Japanese American cuisine such as Teriyaki Chicken, Yakisoba and Vege Tempura. Well, both the Teriyaki Chicken and Yakisoba were completely tasteless, and the tempura was a bit soggy. I mean, it was not just "not that good". It was plain and simply bad. I could have made better Teri chicken from a jar at home. The service was fine, but certainly not worth the money to be serve sub-par food. I have been to many Japanese restaurants all over the Chicagoland area, and this has to be some of the worst food I've ever eaten. With it hidden in the back of the strip in the old Rhapsody space, I'd be surprise it will last that long. Someone please help me understand the Five Star ratings!

We have been going to Toshi since it opened. The Shashimi is the best anywhere in Chicago. We love the Yaki, caterpillar rel and the tam Yam soup. Everything is prepared with great attention to detail and perfection. This is a hidden gem in Gurnee and the service is magnificent. It is so nice to have a truly gourmet restaurant in Gurnee. My husband and I make it a point to eat here once a week

    (5)
  • P G.

Not impressed. The fish was tasteless and the non-fish roll I did order, smelled fishy... I may be a bit of a sushi snob, but when it comes to raw fish, you should be too! I will not be returning.

Visited for a late lunch today - ordered the teriyaki chicken lunch box ($9.50). - came with a Japanese ginger-citrus salad (very good), miso soup (very good), chicken (slightly dry, but good), California roll (4 mini-sushi pieces - lacked flavor), Gyoza (two dumplings..were okay - lacked flavor). The restaurant was clean, nicely, simply decorated. One other group was present (it was after 2pm). The staff was attentive and friendly. may go back and try a sushi roll special - but very doubtful that this will unseat my favorite sushi stop (Sushi Thai)

Always great food and great service. This place truly is a hidden gem. It's around the corner from the beaten path (Gurnee Tourist sites) but DEFINITELY worth it. The Rainbow roll and the Wasabi roll are the best I've found anywhere around, and I've been all over the world including Okinawa, Japan. The mushroom soup is also highly recommended. My twin baby girls love the wait staff who keep them entertained and smiling while my wife and I finally get a chance to enjoy the meal. I couldn't ask for more except maybe for it to be socially acceptable to eat sushi every night of the week. LOL.

Sushi was ok. I would not order the AYCE again. Small fish pieces atop a large amount of rice! If you're going to do that just don't offer AYCE?! Was there for lunch so not sure about dinner service.

It was good (for the Midwest), but if you leave even one sushi on your plate you'll get charged a dollar each! Careful not to order too much!

This place is great. Lots of vegetarian options and friendly staff. I agree with the other reviewer: I hope enough people frequent this family-owned restaurant in Gurnee!

Kawa in Grayslake is better. Rolls were ok. Small, fresh, but not as good as what you can get just down the road a ways in Grayslake.

Went here the other night for the first time and new to the area so I figured I would try it out. Worst experience and service I have ever had at a restaurant. Waited for an hour and forty five minutes to get our food. The waiter only checked up on us maybe two times before we got our food. Never going back the sushi was average st best and over priced.

As a sushi-lover's couple, we were so thrilled to see a new sushi restaurant open around our house. And after dining there, we just have to decide this one as a keeper. Their restaurant isn't the fanciest of all but simple and clean. We experienced good and attentive service. Having a fairly varied menu with reasonable price is a plus to Toshi. I love their spicy salmon roll and baby octopus salad. Dragon roll quite good too, they put cucumber instead of shrimp in the middle, makes it not too filling. We totally had a blast knowing we can have tasty, affordable sushi within reach. Best of luck, Toshi!

  • Alisa S.

My husband and I come here often and love the Wisconsin roll!! The fried ice cream tempura is decadent. This is a sushi place so don't think you will not be spending some $$. I think its worth it since this is about one of the only good sushi places in Gurnee.

    (4)
  • Jack G.

Is it the 100% best sushi in the world (as a sushi snob, no), but it's really good sushi and you combine that with the AYCE for the price and selection you get with that I'd say it's one of the best in the area. I've had 3 other sushi places within 10 miles that I have been a regular at and all have kind of let me down in the last 6 months and Toshi has stepped up to fill the role. Excellent service and very good sushi! Check it out, especially if you're in for the AYCE it's a great deal!

Absolutely love this place! The service is awesome - quick & friendly and the prices are very reasonable. Have not tried the buffet that is advertised in the window yet though, so far just table service.

My fiancé and I absolutely love sushi!! I lived in Japan for 3 years and became very knowledgable in the art of sushi and sashimi. We just moved to the area and were looking for a good place to eat sushi. The food wasn't bad! Wasn't the best but again I have been to the motherland so I find myself to be a bit teased by American sushi. The great part was the service. They hung up our coats for us and they always explained what was going on and came back on a regular basis to check on our table. I would actually give it another half star if possible just because I think AYCE sushi is a great idea. Overall decent place to eat, but nothing to write home to mom about. Green Bay roll was good.

    (3)
  • Joe M.

Best sushi place in the area. Very fresh and good selection of maki rolls. Service is friendly and attentive. Lots of space, but kind of hidden - behind the Golden Corral. Please spread the word about this place, needs more traffic.

  • Katje S.

Excellent food, very conscientious service, lovely ambiance... a terrific experience and unexpected considering it's tucked into a kind of strip mall. Easy half-mile walk from Key Lime Cove. Very kid-friendly (they have Ramune!), but not for wild kids. Give yourself a treat and check this place out!

  • Steven L.

Extremely high quality sushi. The saba (mackrel) was unlike anything I've had at any other sushi restaurant - soft and pliable. The chef-owner Sonny prepares the fish himself unlike other restaurants that buy frozen factory prepared version. Afterwards I tried the salmon skin roll which is a big test of freshness. It was also great - rich and fatty and not fishy at all. The spicy tuna rolls are excellent. They are prepared with some panko at the end for a nice crunch and additional depth of flavor. Ambiance is great, this is a good place for a date. Darker lighting and great decor sets the mood. AYCE sushi is now offered every day of the week except after 4 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

  • Melvin S.

all you can eat for $20! not bad! especially when you can pick sushi, rolls, and appetizers! I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a big dinner where you can get more than 10 things at a time!

  • Morgan J.

The fish was very good. The rice was very under seasoned. There were several fish eggs on the vegetarian rolls, which is a pet peeve. Overall standard sushi, nothing special. If it was cheaper it would have gotten more stars.

The rolls were really good and the fish was fresh. They were very helpful and the sushi Chef came to our table several times with suggestions and to see if we liked everything. Our favorite was the caterpillar roll.

Nice people and good service but I now understand why it is all you can eat sushi. I have never seen sushi with so much rice and so little fish. They really skimp on the fish regardless of what you order. You get what you pay for.

It's always a good thing to support a locally owned business, and this is a business worthy of that support. The roll we had was okay, hence the 1 star deduction, but the sushi itself was very good. Fresh & tender. Good sized slice of fish. Wait staff was very friendly & attentive. Will definitely be back.

I had the all you can eat menu and absolutely no complaints. Great price and great quality. Items are made fresh when you order them, not premade waiting for someone to grab. The service was very good too, always checking up on us and never let the water glass get less than half full.

THE ONLY REASON WHY I'M GIVING Toshi Sushi ONE STAR IS THIS: you shouldn't have a young girl that is only in 5th grade (she told me so) waiting on tables!! I cannot believe the father of this girl & also the owner is letting this child work there, taking orders, serving food & everything else (taking my credit card at the end) . The first few times we went here, the little girl was only hostessing which we thought was funny, but cute too. Now tonight we go there & she's waiting on tables!! I'm sorry Toshi...your food is really good, but this is unacceptable!! It is illegal as well!! The little girl was absolutely adorable..she tried so hard & was the sweetest thing. But, that's just it...she's just a child! If you can't get a sitter than there are other appropriate jobs you can give her around the restaurant. Not waiting on tables, taking alcoholic drink orders from customers. It's wrong, it's illegal & when I go to a restaurant & spend this kind of money, I hope to have an adult waiting on me. It's uncomfortable to say the least & really bad business ethics.

Very nice simple fresh flavors. The service is excellent, everyone is extremely helpful and friendly. The sashimi has been great every time, good and fresh. It is a very low key comfortable atmosphere. They don't attract big clouds but they should, and I bet this place will get more lively as word spreads about how good this place really is.

The freshest sushi in Gurnee and probably for twenty miles around. The restaurant is spotlessly clean. The staff is amazing. They genuinely care about their clientele. When my husband was diagnosed with diabetes and we had to start questioning items on their menu, the waitress actually told the chef, who came out of the kitchen to discuss how the food is prepared and what's in it. We have /never/ had that happen in any other restaurant. This restaurant is tucked away behind Golden Corral off Dilley's road, and is not immediately apparent from the highway, but it is very definitely worth finding. I have never had such a consistently pleasant dining experience anywhere. I'm not just talking about one good trip. I'm talking about dozens of visits to this restaurant, and always with the same level of cleanliness, freshness, quality and friendliness. If I could eat sushi seven days a week, I would, and I would eat it at Toshi.

For the past couple of years, our friend comes to visit from Florida & we've made it a tradition to go out to eat at a sushi restaurant. Everyone knows if you want quality sushi, you have to pay good money for it. I actually saw this restaurant on my way home & I looked up the reviews and the menu. So we tried it out the next day. Very clean, very simple, comfy seats & menu is easy to read. We ordered the sushi for two & it was amazing! It comes with california roll, spicy tuna roll & 18 pcs of sushi of chef's choice. It actually feeds 3 people! The price was very reasonable & the quality was very fresh, crisp & overall mouth watering. I was worried actually to see what the chef would make but I loved every roll he made. my boyfriend tried eel for the first time and fell in love with it. I even had the white snapper sushi for the first time & loved it! Highly recommended place. definitely would go back again! very well worth the money.

Excellent service and tasty food in a nice quiet environment. You can't ask for more. I ate at Benni Hanna the night before and it was night and day. The food had better taste and the service was great. Good experience in every way.

Awesome place for All You Can Eat Sushi for just $20! It is fresh and great portions! Amazingly the place allows you to eat as much of the goodness as you can take. Just expect to eat all of the sushi. They have $1 penalty for each one you don't eat. So don't waste your food!

    (5)
  • Tinotenda S.

I'm a fan of the unlimited Sushi for 14.95 or 19.95, I'm yet to find another place that offers such a deal. The sushi is freshly made and you can order more as you eat. Plenty of options which means you get the bang for your buck. You have to finish all the Sushi or else a charge is placed, despite that really good deal

  • Jin N.

This place is awesome went here with my daughter's and husband. The staff was very friendly and food was fabulous. It was a great deal add an awesome selection. Can't wait to go back again for husbands birthday. One of the best restaurants I have ever been to.

Haven't had anything I didn't like excellent food, the white sauce ginger sauce teriyaki sauce all crazy good. Hibachi chicken or steak can't beat it! Also the salad with it comes with the best ginger dressing I've ever had period!

Huge rip off! I came for the all you can eat lunch sushi. If you love rice it is a great deal! Tiny paper thin slivers of fish and huge amount of rice! Leaving hungry after paying $15 plus tax! I am in the area every week - I will never return here!

Stay tuned. ;)

amazing sushi place, loved the selection of sushi. to order all you can eat, they give u a list of stuff you want and number it on how many orders you want. for you to be able to order again while on the all u can eat, you MUST eat all what you ordered before or they will charge you extra. but waitress was a little slow on getting us refill drinks other than that, awesome service.

Not good at all... thin slices of salmon with to much rice just that did it for me all tge rolls were really basic... all you can eat menu has nothing good.. Kawa in grayslake is so far my favorite $25.00 AYCE but worth it. Never again coming here

Love love love the sushi here! It is phenomenal. The staff is friendly and accommodating. My only complaint is the price. It is extremely expensive for all you can eat. And they charge if you don't finish everything on plate. Other than that I love this place and will continue coming here!

Save yourself a trip and get sushi from the grocery store. Horrible sushi with way too much soggy rice and bad service (waited more than 50 minutes for 3 rolls with no explanation of the wait)

The best part of Toshi is the "all you can eat" special, of which they offer both lunch and dinner versions. Its affordable & the selection/variety is pretty decent given that its a preset menu. The decor is okay and the service is mixed but overall I have to say I always enjoy myself.

Monday-Thursday is all you can eat sushi $19.95 per person. Has an extensive menu so you have plenty to chose from. Will def. go back.

  • Adrienne M.

AYCE sushi is now offered every day of the week except after 4 PM on Fridays and Saturdays.

all you can eat for $20! not bad! especially when you can pick sushi, rolls, and appetizers! I highly recommend this place if you're looking for a big dinner where you can get more than 10 things at a time!

The fish was very good. The rice was very under seasoned. There were several fish eggs on the vegetarian rolls, which is a pet peeve. Overall standard sushi, nothing special. If it was cheaper it would have gotten more stars.

Throughly enjoyable experience. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The staff super friendly and efficient. The decor and ambiance bright and welcoming. It is a little hidden location wise but when you find it, you'll love it.

  • Carl F.

I've just recently started coming here and been here around six times now. So far every visit has been very satisfying. The fish is very fresh, the roles are packed nicely so they don't fall apart and the staff is efficient. Most of all, their lunch special, 3 roles for $10 is a great deal!

    (2)

Monday-Thursday is all you can eat sushi $19.95 per person. Has an extensive menu so you have plenty to chose from. Will def. go back.

Not impressed. The fish was tasteless and the non-fish roll I did order, smelled fishy... I may be a bit of a sushi snob, but when it comes to raw fish, you should be too! I will not be returning.

LOL.

The food is always fresh and tasty. To be fair though, all we have ever eaten has been the Sushi. The service is friendly and attentive.

Sushi was ok. I would not order the AYCE again. Small fish pieces atop a large amount of rice! If you're going to do that just don't offer AYCE?! Was there for lunch so not sure about dinner service.

  • Adrienne M.

My husband and I come here often and love the Wisconsin roll!! The fried ice cream tempura is decadent. This is a sushi place so don't think you will not be spending some $$. I think its worth it since this is about one of the only good sushi places in Gurnee.

  • Joelle S.

  • Nick D.

I had the all you can eat menu and absolutely no complaints. Great price and great quality. Items are made fresh when you order them, not premade waiting for someone to grab. The service was very good too, always checking up on us and never let the water glass get less than half full.

Throughly enjoyable experience. The sushi was fresh and delicious. The staff super friendly and efficient. The decor and ambiance bright and welcoming. It is a little hidden location wise but when you find it, you'll love it.

The best part of Toshi is the "all you can eat" special, of which they offer both lunch and dinner versions. Its affordable & the selection/variety is pretty decent given that its a preset menu. The decor is okay and the service is mixed but overall I have to say I always enjoy myself.

    (3)

  • Christina S.

Stay tuned. ;)

amazing sushi place, loved the selection of sushi. to order all you can eat, they give u a list of stuff you want and number it on how many orders you want. for you to be able to order again while on the all u can eat, you MUST eat all what you ordered before or they will charge you extra. but waitress was a little slow on getting us refill drinks other than that, awesome service.

I can't say enough great things about this place. Great food, great customer service, and great prices. I've been coming here for about 2 years now and every time I come in everything is awesome. Keep it up guys!

  • Justin S.

  • Sarita M.

Excellent service and tasty food in a nice quiet environment. You can't ask for more. I ate at Benni Hanna the night before and it was night and day. The food had better taste and the service was great. Good experience in every way.

    (5)
  • Jin N.

This place is awesome went here with my daughter's and husband. The staff was very friendly and food was fabulous. It was a great deal add an awesome selection. Can't wait to go back again for husbands birthday. One of the best restaurants I have ever been to.

Save yourself a trip and get sushi from the grocery store. Horrible sushi with way too much soggy rice and bad service (waited more than 50 minutes for 3 rolls with no explanation of the wait)

Move on.
