This is a pretty standard family restaurant. We found the waitstaff friendly, though the food was mostly average. The real standout was my Reuben sandwich, which was one of the better Reubens I've had in the area. Unfortunately the accompanying fries were underdone and the (pre-packaged) coleslaw was inedibly sweet.

We have driven past this place over 10 years and finally decided to give it a try. The first time I had breaded veal and my husband had liver and onions. We tried both soups (tomato basil and creamy wild rice) and everything was so good. It's all home cooking, and the server we've had both times is so pleasant. Second trip was the gyro platter and we tried both daily soups again (vegetable soup and cream of broccoli) and they were just as good, if not better. Definitely family-friendly, and cozy to have a hearty meal!

Been going to Hillside for 20 years, but not lately. The restaurant needs an update, new carpet, booths and menu. I went Tuesday night and had what was described as veal. I'm not sure what I got, it was fried, overcooked, too much breading and not much flavor. They do OK for breakfast if you don't mind reverting to early 90s decor.

Ate here with the family while making a quick visit to the area for my son's Navy bootcamp graduation. Overall, we enjoyed eating here. The food was, well, standard diner fare type food. Nothing special, but certainly good. The menu has a nice variety on it. We were greeted by a friendly hostess as soon as we entered, and the waitress was friendly and attentive. I would eat there again were I to visit the area in the future. If you're looking for a casual place to take the family for some home-cooking style of meal, stop by and give it a try.

Traditional family restaurant. Food is good, highly recommend the club sandwiches with fries and ranch (trust me I'm a ranch snob). On Sunday's they have the cream of chicken soup and its delicious!

Terrible coffee and service! Food was delivered fast but incorrect. Comments made in the kitchen about correcting the order were heard. Not sure anyone appreciates being gestured by kitchen staff when they made the mistake. We will likely never eat here again.

We have lived in Grayslake for 17 years and Hillside was the first restaurant we went to. The food was consistently good and portions more than adequate. The wait staff provided prompt service. We haven't gone to Hillside in the past few years simply because it needs to be freshed up. New carpeting and fixtures would make this family friendly restaurant much more appealing. I see a lot of cars in their parking lot, so it is certainly worth a try.

I went yesterday for the first time. I was so disappointed. I ordered their special for $9 they had a sausage skillet. Sounded delicious! Except it wasn't. Super small portion for what you pay for at other places. The breakfast sausage...pretty sure it was hot dogs, no joke. She didn't ask what kind of cheese so I assumed it would be American as other places. It was American, American cheese slices that weren't even melted all the way. The skillet was also very salty. I get my Texas toast. I've never seen yellow Texas toast, but whatever. Way too much butter and once again, salty beyond belief. The service was good by the waitress. But when at register to pay, the girl was on the phone talking about her plans for the night while serving us...I will not be going back. Go to triangle down the road instead.

Good diner style food, with diner style service, not much to be expected. But good enough. Hostess not very friendly, and owner comes in late so hard to reach if you would like to talk to them about catering a breakfast, and no one else had knowledge on the subject.

Really enjoyed my breakfast. Had the corned beef hash skillet and it was the best in the area, so far. Slow on a weekday morning but staff was nice as well as the service. Don't get up here often but would stop here again.

The food here is pretty good. Typical diner. There are two others in the area - Triangle and Mrs. V's - that I'd prefer but if they're both closed or I'm feeling especially lazy (our office is right across the street) Hillside it is.

We come here often. Service is fantastic. Food is consistently good. Soups are homemade, and delicious. Salads are always fresh. Because I'm on Weight Watchers, I'm a little more high maintenance when it comes to ordering. They are very accommodating. Once I ordered something out of the ordinary and the cook (who I've never even seen before ) joked and told the waitress he wouldn't serve me my order because it was too many points. It was quite funny! Missy is generally our waitress. She - and the other servers are always on top of their game! Gus the owner is a terrific guy!
