Looked promising walking thru the front door, but not very authentic Mexican, IMHO. I use refried beans and guacamole as reliable barometers of good Mexican food. Neither are very good here. I had tacos which were not very tasty. Even the margarita (another good barometer) my wife had was disappointing, tasted like it was mixed ages ago and sat for a long time. Service was fine and I liked the decor, but this is not a place I'd go back to. I'd rank it a little below, say, a Pepe's, which is not at the top of my Mexican dining experience either. It IS the only Mexican option if you are in Galena. NEWSFLASH- a second Mexican restaurant has opened in Galena (Campeche) as of Sept 2010!

Very good service. Warm atmosphere. Great salsa (which is worth mentioning because at some restaurants it's more of an afterthought) and very reasonable prices compared to the historic area, which is generally a rip-off. But our fajitas were nothing to write home about. Good, but I wouldn't do them again. I should have gone for a combo plate.

Great food, drinks and service. We will definitely go back next time we are in Galena.

Normally, I wouldn't be so harsh with only 2 stars, but the past 3 times that I have gone here with my family, the service has been awful. I don't know if they do not have enough people working or what, but we waited an absurdly long time for our food and no one even came to ask how our drinks were doing. Another waiter finally came to check on us and he seemed to be running everything so I do not know what that was about. The food is pretty good, I like the chicken quesadilla fajita, and the margaritas are fair. This place is super affordable but the service has just been terrible.

Mexican is my favorite so I was very excited to try this restaurant. I wasn't too impressed. First off, I was a little put off because it's in a strip mall, but I kept an open mind. The lighting was awful (bright enough to perform surgery), but again, I kept an open mind. My margarita wasn't very tasty, nor were the chips/salsa. The one nice thing is the menu is HUGE...many choices. I went with the chicken verde enchiladas. I've had better. I really wanted to like it, but it just didn't do it for me.

Great American style Mexican food, reasonably priced, fast, and served with a smile. What more can you ask for? My only recommendation is that they work on the guacamole. It doesn't taste fresh and seems watered down. Oh and please turn down the live guitar player. I am sure we all enjoy his music but it is hard to have a conversation when you can't hear what the other person is saying.

Margaritas as big as your face!! Be prepared if you order the large! It could easily be consumed by two people. Yummy authentic Mexican food and pretty good service. This is always one of my stops when I'm in town.

If you're in Galena and want to try some authentic Mexican cuisine, this is the only place to go. Located in a mall on the edge of town, it would not seem to be a place to find excellent dining. Yet this place has a very clean and ornate interior, very fast service, and superb variety on their menu. You get a big bowl of tortilla chips seconds after sitting down. The food comes quickly even if there are many people. I have eaten here 4 times in my travels through Galena and I never left disappointed. Steak burrito, two thumbs up!

We stopped here for dinner and everything was very good. Good service, great food, and truly exceptional margaritas.

I will start by saying that my husband is from Mexico and is an amazing cook, so my standards for Mexican food are probably a little different from some. My husband and I were really looking forward to eating here, and I have to say I was pretty disappointed. The first thing that threw me off was that I was explaining my shellfish allergy to our waiter, in Spanish, and he said they had no "mariscos" there, which is clearly a problem if he thinks that since there is shellfish all over their menu. After explaining what the word meant (again, in Spanish), we were finally assured that they would keep my food away from contact with any shellfish. The first thing my husband loved was that he could get a 32 oz. Dos Equis for $5.99, which is a pretty awesome price. For an appetizer, we were limited because of my allergies (I couldn't eat any meat cooked on the grill because of contact), so we ordered nachos with ground beef and cheese. First, we were surprised that there was nothing else on them (like beans, lettuce, etc). Second, I seriously could not even eat them. The ground beef tasted like the old school concoction my mom used to put together with the seasoning packet to make hard-shell tacos at home. The cheese tasted like melted American cheese singles. They were SO bad. I seriously barely got through one. For the entrees, my husband got a steak that he liked, and I got the chicken flautas, which were different, but ok. It's funny to me when people say "authentic Mexican" which would be like saying "authentic American" because it can mean so many things depending on what region the food comes from. I have only eaten flautas made with corn tortillas, but these were made from flour tortillas. The owners/chefs in this restaurant are most likely from a part of Mexico with different style food than I am used to because multiple dishes looked very different than my previous experiences. I will note, however, that the chicken inside the flautas was very good. My husband left happy because of the big beer and big steak, but most of what I ate was definitely blah. The only thing worse than my food was the nasty attitude of some ignorant customers at a table near us who were talking to the Mexican waiters like they were their slaves. One man, when his waiter arrived with a box for his extra food and handed it to him said loudly, "No, YOU put it in there." He also later told the waiter that "he was going to get it one of these days" if he didn't do things right. I guess there are ignorant people everywhere so I shouldn't judge, but I've never seen such disgusting behavior. To the server's credit, he handled it well. Our waiter was really kind too, so I wish I could have said better about this place, but the food was what it was. There are definitely some good things on the menu (like the steak my husband loved) but not everything was up to par in my view.

This place was the highlight of our trip to Galena. Simply the best Mexican food we ever had. We are from Chicago and have some quality Mexican cuisine before. Almost everything we tried was awesome. Drinks are good and relatively inexpensive. Live band. We ended the night with a Anejo tequila sampler. Very reasonably priced and clean and authentic.

Do you like Mole? I do!! I've tired chicken mole at many Mexican places including in Mexico. Of all the places I've gone in the states, this place has the best mole! (Ok mole is like curry so we all have different preferences..) Very tasty sauce, can taste chiles, a bit more sweet side but not overly like some place.

The place is very clean and the waitress was sweet. Nothing spectacular. They gave us a free meal for my daughter because it was Sunday. I normally just share from my plate but it was a nice gesture for guests out of town. I would go here again if I came back to Galena.

I've been to Los Aztecas four times now. It's a nice restaurant space with a dining room and a full bar. On Wednesdays, there are $2.50 margaritas. Service is very quick, and the staff is delightfully friendly. But the food? It's bland, Midwest/ Velveeta/ Betty Crocker Mexican. In all fairness, I should see what lies beyond the $5.00 lunch specials. The good news is there are daily ones. The bad news is the discount Burrito looks nothing like what you might know as a burrito. Not only is not bigger than your head, it's flat and not bigger than your hand! And most specials come with rice or beans, but not both. I've just been spoiled by the many urban Mexican cheap eats/big food options I was used to before moving to the hinterlands.

If it wasn't for the cold beer and great salsa and chips it would be 1 star. Steak tacos are extremely greasy. Rice is eh.. Beans are decent. Not really up to my par. But I from Chicago and married a Mexican woman. So my standards are pretty high.

Food was great except for the foot long hair in my taco. The staff was friendly but I got the feeling they did not want to be there. GF loved it. No hair in her food.

I live in Southern California and am used to really good authentic Mexican and it place is not that. It was okay and the prices are reasonable. Our waitress was rude and the music was too loud. Don't think I would come back here on my next visit to town.

Closest Mexican fare to the 18th Street eateries in Chicago. Chicken soup is great as are the portions. They even serve horchata! The locals love it.

I have to say the only downside to Los Aztecas is the location in a strip mall north of town. Its hidden away but actually a large restaurant. I have never been there when busy but every visit has included fast service, and delicious food. There's a dish I love with eggs and pulled beef, can't remember the name but I get that whether its lunch dinner or whatever. Large portions, prices are fair, this is el ganador if you want Mexican in Galena!~ (Hmm did I say that correctly?)

We were visiting from LaCrosse, WI on May 5th and wanted to find a place for margaritas. We Yelped this place and chose it based on the reviews. Everything was wonderful from the chips and salsa, margaritas to the entrees. The only reason I did not give 5 stars is because the floors needed to be vacuumed and the tile floor to the bathroom and the bathroom floor seemed greasy/slippery,

This should say it all: * A pitcher of gold margaritas on the rocks for under $20 * Steak tacos full of grease and fire * Enchiladas so stuffed with seafood that you are wondering if they keep an ocean in the back of the restaurant I mean, honestly. As for the Galena outpost, it looks remarkably similar to the original Dubuque restaurant, and the service is just as consistently prompt. There's no need for a preference in location. Los Aztecas is fantastic.

A very large group of hungry bikers were extremely pleased with this choice. Everything was great, the servers very pleasant and they kept the HOG trough filled with drinks and chips & Salsa while we waited for our food. We'd come back again. Everything was delicious and the prices fair.

We went there for a laid back / casual dinner. Starting by the chips: homemade, delicious, served warm and crispy, as the are supposed to be. Salsa, absolutely fantastic. Drinks: a 27 oz Margarita, fair priced, strong, not extremely sweet, and delightful. Entrees: Burritos Deluxe (2 chicken burritos, served with cheese, sauce and sour cream) and Camarones ao Chipotle, were cooked mild and spicy, respectively. Both dishes were very flavorful and didn't required any sides to enhance their taste, although Guacamole does make everything taste better. Our waiter recommended Mex-Xango (a fried tortilla filled with cheesecake, served with Vanilla Ice Cream, strawberry and chocolate sauces) for dessert which was scrumptious. Just a quick note: Our waiter didn't write our order down, which is why that was a slight mistake in our order (we got a cheese dip, instead Nachos with cheese). Definitely we are coming back in other opportunities.

We went for lunch and were quite pleased with not only the food but also the trendy, interesting decor. Very colorful and inviting...and did I mention the food was great?! Very inexpensive, as well...and the lunch portions were actually more like dinner ones. Recommend!!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
