Hard to imagine Illinois could harbor such beauty, but the Northwestern part of the state is really filled with lovely vistas of farms, crops, ponds, trees, lakes, and yes the mighty Mississippi. Galena is a fun town too filled with history, charm, shops, eateries and restaurants. Goldmoor definitely has one of the prime spots in the area. The drive in reminded us of a country estate somewhere in England. We did not lodge here, but did have a party of 12 for a special birthday dinner. The private room with windows on three sides was the perfect place to enjoy our meal. The huge square table was just right for our group. We started out sampling the cheese and chutney plate, grecian salad in cucumber cups and the lamb chop lollipops. Although none of the appetizers stopped us in our tracks flavor wise, they were beautifully presented and definitely stimulated our taste buds for more. The chilled beet soup was a bit of a surprise to find on their menu, but I couldn't pass it up. It was a warm evening, and a cold soup seemed to be the logical next step. I enjoyed the soup very much although it differed significantly from the borschts I've had in the past. Expecting small chunks of vegetables in a light pink buttermilk broth, I was surprised to see this creamy foamy cup before me. Their version was more like a beet bisque, where all the individual ingredients were whipped up so that you only had one smooth texture encompassing the taste of he beets, yogurt, dill, scallion and cucumber in one spoonful. A nice surprise. The whole menu was quite small - with only 8 entrees to choose from which included fish, pork, seafood, and beef. I opted for the beef wellington as their version incorporated a mushroom duxelle rather than the usual liver pate. I had not had this dish in years. The beef arrived as promised and the steak was done to a perfect medium rare. My only complaint was the incredibly large mound of mashed potatoes that the filet was perched on. For one thing, it wouldn't occur to me to pair this kind of starch with an already rich pastry wrapped beef. As I cut into the meat, the potatoes just went everywhere making the initial presentation look like a disaster. Surely a more delicate side would have made this entree shine. Service was great. We were never rushed or hovered over, which made the dining experience a pleasure. Our room had access to an outdoor patio which overlooked the Mississippi River - a glorious spot for photos or just taking in the view. The food might have needed some tweaking, but the beautiful surroundings courtesy of mother nature needed no help at all.

Restaurant has a lovely view of the Mississippi. The people are nice and the people were right there to help. However, the food and service were not as good as we hoped (both are MUCH better at Otto's, for example). The serving sizes were HUGE (too big) and the flavors not very pronounced. My steamed broccoli was PERFECT. But they brought my dad's appetizer and no one else's food for another 20 minutes. I wish they had asked "When would you like this?" because the four of us were all off-kilter. The soups were nice and flavorful -- and the broccoli, good, as I said. But not sure we'd go back.

We came to Galena for our first anniversary. We ate at Fried Green Tomatoes the first night most off the food tasted like it was from a can. I had the Beef Wellington and definitely enjoyed it, we ate in the sun room which was secluded and enjoyed the view. I'd definitely recommend this place.

Great restaurant, i didn't stay at the hotel. Just came in to eat for dinner. The food was splendid and the service was great. Probably one of the neater and more beautiful restaurants ive been to in recent memory or even ever in my life. The grounds were something else and the inside was cozy and impressively done. Comes highly recommended.

Please let me tell you that this restaurant was highly recommended by Yelp & Trip Advisor. I have read the reviews from previous guests who dined and stayed at the Goldmoor Inn, and I wish we would have had the same experience as everyone else did at this upscale restaurant. Where do I begin....Hmmm! Ok, lets start by talking about the ambiance. Absolutely gorgeous place, with spectacular views of the Mississippi River. Stunning. Service - Our reservation was for 9ppl at 8:00 p.m., Dinner service was not til 9:30 - 9:45 p.m. Service was extremely slow. Staff were inexperienced, but kind. Shout out goes out to David our server who tried his best to make us happy. Food - A few important notes...... Its under new ownership (4 months) Chef has been there for at least 8 months Appetizers - Spinach and artichoke Dip was more like soup and not a dip Pomme Frittes - were baked and not fully roasted and the fries were not even uniformed in size Bruschetta - Ok Dinner - I have to talk about my dish. Sadly everyone was disappointed with their dish, but my dish which I think was the simplest was actually my worse dish ever. I received my Ratatouille on a bed of orechiette. Let me point out that ratatouille's is a french term for stewed vegetables and its main ingredient is tomatoes. Sadly, my vegetables were not stewed, it did not contain tomatoes and it my vegetables especially the carrots were undercooked with absolutely no flavor. Wine - We ordered 2 different bottles of wine and it other restaurants, the servers would give us a fresh glass of wine, but it wasn't the case here. So the owner came out and he didn't have a good explanation as to why the entrees were poorly executed. We were all hungry and angry at the same time. He didn't care and he made it seem like it was our fault for not behaving the way a patron should behave at a restaurant. Are you serious. This guy obviously is inexperienced in the restaurant industry because you just don't talk to customers that way. He wasn't diplomatic, he just didn't want to except the fact that his team failed, especially his chef. Working in the restaurant industry (specifically at an upscale restaurant), I would have never spoken to our customers the way he did. In the restaurant industry and I'm sure in other industries too, the customer is always right. Not in this case. The owner was rude, had no personality, no direction and no vision. I wish this restaurant lots of luck, because they are going to need it. Please be aware when you make a reservation, proceed with caution. The value and service does not equal the price we paid.

Our dinner was absolutely delicious, especially the perfectly cooked steak and the best sauteed carrots I've ever eaten! So why only 3 stars?? Because in a restaurant that was almost full ( at least 12 tables of 2-6 guests) there was ONE employee. This lovely young lady was the server, the bartender AND the busser. Period. Not another employee was seen in the restaurant during the 2+ hours we were there. She did her best, she really did!! However as you can imagine, one person can only be so attentive to a dozen tables all dining at the same time!! She (Avril?) could not have been more gracious, but we actually felt guilty that one person had to work so hard! Not exactly the fine dining experience we were expecting.

The ambiance can't be beat - pulling up to a mini-castle...can't get much cooler than that. We had a nice view of the river and the only distraction was the occasional freight train passing through. The house salad was beautifully presented and tasted great. I had the lavender chicken and loved it; my boyfriend has the tuna steak and thought it was just okay. The flourless chocolate cake was dry and unappealing. The absolute worse things about this restaurant is the service. When we entered nobody greeted or acknowledged us for several minutes. There were only 3 other parties in the restaurant yet it took over 20 minutes for us to even place a drink order. Throughout dinner our water glasses were consistently empty and our plates took forever to be cleared. The waitress rarely stopped by and when she did, she was cold to us. While the food was amazingly delicious, the service is the reason we're never coming back.

This was a surprise stay to celebrate my birthday so my review might be a little biased but only slightly. Atmosphere: Like something you would see on a WTTW broadcast. Charming might be the right word. This place looks like a mini castle that is tucked away in the hills of Galena. Service: Attentive but not smothering. Just perfect. Food: Unreal good. Bone-in ribeye that was out of this world and the Beef Wellington was the best I have tasted. Massage: 1st massage I have ever had and it was spectacular. Honestly I have nothing to benchmark it against but I want one every day now. Front desk helped my wife set it up for us. Overall it was fantastic. Would stay here again any time. The weather was not the best as it rained the entire weekend...felt like I was in Ireland.

We took my Mom to celebrate her birthday at the Goldmoor and we could not have been happier. They surprised us with a private room (I had indicated in my reservation we were there for a special occasion.) The views are breathtaking overlooking the Mississippi and we enjoyed a beautiful sunset. Our server and the manager were both very attentive and gracious enough to help us with photo taking. The food was wonderful. My sister exclaimed the crab cake was "the best she'd ever had!" I agree it was delicious with little filler and no bell peppers.Yum They are right their specialty beef wellington was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. I had the sole which was filled with warm garlicy spinach and so moist. Terrific We were so stuffed with the wonderful meal and sparkling wine that we couldn't fit in dessert and the restaurant presented my Mom with a special little box of truffles. What a treat. Thank you Goldmoor for making our night so special! We'll be back!

We attended the Christmas Carol Dinner this year. It was a big disappointment. We really were excited and wanted to love it, but it started off on the wrong foot and just got worse. We started with a glass of wine at the bar before being seated. I questioned the amount of the pour because it looked very small. There was some hesitation between the bartender and an obvious supervisor, but they indicated it was a 6 oz. pour and showed me a pouring ruler.....come to find out later, they have different sizes of wine goblets, so using the pouring ruler would produce a larger or smaller pour based on the size of the goblet. The pumpkin bisque was barely lukewarm, but tasty. The prime rib was all over the place at our table of 6 diners....some had lovely sized pieces that had a little pink in the middle, but a few of us had what looked to be the end, very small, and well done, dry and chewy. The potatoes were starchy and again, everything was barely warm. There were only 28 quests being served, so really no excuse for food not being hot. Salad was good. Carrot cake (if you could call it that) was dry with a measly smearing of frosting that came off in a sheet. Probably was a frozen/purchased dessert. No one at our table ate more than a few bites. This was all for $65/person. I know people that have eaten in the restaurant before and have raved about the food. I was terribly disappointed. Then the Christmas carolers (6 of them--3 women and 3 men) were sad. Only 1 woman (the innkeeper) and 1 young man sang with any sort of enthusiasm. The rest of the bunch stood there with no smiles, faces buried in their music, like they were being forced to perform. It certainly did not get us in the holiday mood. The piano player was very good! It was very uncomfortable sitting there eating mediocre food and listening to vocalists that obviously didn't enjoy what they were doing, and then getting the bill, plus drinks and a 20% gratuity added in that added up to $230 per couple. I will never go back, but I believe that dinner in their restaurant is probably better than the banquet dinner.

I had a great experience here. I went in the winter an stayed in one of the little houses off to the side. So cozy with a little snow on the ground. The food was amazing. Im not just saying that. I'm a chef and the beef wellington was the best I have had. I had to go in the kitchen and thank the chef. I purposed to my wife here down the hill next to the horse farm. Thanks Goldmoor for giving us a week that we will remember for a lifetime. Oh only little gripe. The breakfast was only so-so. Dinner made up for it.

What a delight when we drove up to this beautiful inn and restaurant with breathtaking views of the Mississippi River. It made me a little nervous about what we'd be spending on dinner but in the end, we ate heartily and spent less than we had at any of the nice restaurants in town. Presentation was amazing, food delicious, service attentive, and price perfect. We'll go back!

We found this place through trip advisor rated number one for places to dine in galena and now that we've gone here I know why! We had a wonderful experience! Real laid back, quiet place not somewhere you would want to bring kids ;) our server was fantastic, limited menu but it switches throughout the year. Their dessert was out of this world! We had a pear cheesecake sounds funny but no regrets here!!! The host, cooks & server couldn't have been more polite! We got a tour of the entire place and hope to return for our anniversary to stay over night.

We went to the Goldmoor Inn May 3, we had heard about it and thought we would give it a try! We called for a reservation and we were told 7:45! It was kind of late but thought we can sit at the bar and have a drink first! We arrived there at 7:25! We went to the bar and no one way came to wait on us until 7:40! Needless to say we did not receive our entree until 9:30! We thought we were the only one that was not getting waiting on until we heard a group talking behind us! Their reservation was for 6:30 and that had waited three hours for their food. The food was phenomenal! But apparently they were under staffed and the waitress seemed very underwhelmed that she was doing a crappy job of waiting on us and everyone else. It is a high end establishment and we realize there is emphasis on taking your time! But we did not leave there until 10:15! Almost three house for a dinner for two!

We were very excited to have recently found this restaurant. It is outside of the week-end crowds of Galena a plus right off. The grounds are beautiful with a a great view. Everyone was friendly and the service was excellent. Our meal was delicious and we can't wait to return and try other menu items and introduce friends to the Goldmoor.

My wife and I were looking for a quick getaway and found the Goldmoor Inn more than accommodating. The room was very large and clean. All the furnishings were very tasteful. We had dinner and breakfast during our stay. I'll agree that the prices were a little high and the menu a bit limited. I would have liked to see more local ingredients. They are surrounded by farm country, why not promote the local fare? Overall the food was very good. I had a pork belly app that was outstanding, but my chicken and pasta dish fell flat for me. I was a little disappointed with breakfast. For the price we paid to stay there, and have the meal included, it would have been nice to have a made to order breakfast. We got what was served, and while it was good, if I'm spending upwards of $300.00 a night I want something on my plate other than bread (French toast). We may return, we may not. They could really benefit if they had a wine tasting? The only issue is, you are pretty far from anything. So unless you are golfing or you plan on staying in for your entire stay... you are 20-30 min away from anything. Seems they could keep people entertained if they offered even a free glass/ bottle of wine for guests to drink and enjoy the surroundings.

We have been going to Goldmoor Inn for a few years now and it is just a fun, romantic place to getaway. It is only a few hours from Bloomington and a beautiful scenic drive in the fall. They have a restaurant at the Goldmoor, great wine list, full bar and delicious desserts. When you arrive they show you where you are staying and if there are some suites empty you might get lucky enough to peek in them! There are two freshly baked cookies in your room! We have stayed in quite a few suites and all have been great. Fireplaces, you can order champagne and chocolate covered strawberries to your room, jacuzzis...need I say more. Come on if you are wanting to spice up your relationship or just getaway and sleep in a big comfy bed, this is your place. We always do the champagne and chocolate tour and it is great! They take you to all the places in downtown galena so you can drink as much as you want cause there is no driving for you and your mate! They are about fifteen minutes away from downtown Galena which I think is nice. We like to check out the shops, eat out and then go back to the Goldmoor and rest. You can rent bikes there too. Last time we were there, there was a wedding and it was beautiful. Just a nice quiet place to relax and well...you know ;0) Oh if you have AT&T you will not have service the whole time...and update your GPS because sometimes finding the place is a biotch! After you stay once you get a great discount too!!!!! Oh I meant to say something about there breakfast! They will deliver it right to your room and it is always hot and sooooo good!

I have stayed at the Goldmoor with my family on several occasions. We absolutely love it! Our most recent stay was between Christmas and New Years. We had a wonderful prime rib dinner with excellent wine. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. The atmosphere was magical. There was caroling (with a tad of audience participation) and the snow and Christmas decorations were just gorgeous. Again, the whole family loves the Goldmoor!

Nice dining room. The hostess told us that her favorite platter was the cheese and chutney. We ordered it and it was good, although the cheeses were nothing special - machengo, havarti and Boursin. The chutney was fine but nothing special. The hostess explained that they're known for their beef Wellington. I ordered it and found the pastry to be quite salty though the steak was nicely cooked. She also recommended the Joel Gott Cabernet Sauvignon. I sampled all three cabs on the menu and agreed that the Gott was the best. All in all, I was glad to try the restaurant but I don't think I'll return.

My husband and I stayed in the Covington Suite for our honeymoon weekend..It was a bit pricey, but it was worth it. Our room was absolutely beautiful and had a great view from the screened in patio. A yummy breakfast was brought to our room each morning by a very nice lady. My only complaints is their restaurant had mediocre food with very high prices. The atmosphere was so pretty in the dining area, but the food was just ok. We had a little issue with the owners wife at the very end with a mix up with a massage and she was very rude to us, but we had a nice stay otherwise. We would stay there again for sure, but we would stay away from the owners and not dine there :)

We went to the Goldmoor for a mini-moon before we leave for a full honey moon this winter and we weren't disappointed! My aunt and uncle had said the food was amazing and that there was a chef's table in the kitchen that we could sit at, so when I called to book, that is what we booked! I'll admit, it was a bit awkward at first when we walked into the kitchen and there was a huge table for like 10 and we were the only ones, front and center with the chef's. After a few minutes, the chef's quickly made us feel more comfortable and we were all chatting and enjoying ourselves. The food was outstanding. They made us a beef ceviche that was the best thing I have eaten in a very long time! Now just to clarify, we live in Chicago and eat out about once a week and always at different restaurants, so in my book, saying that this was the best thing I have had in a long time, goes a long way! They cut us a piece for fresh honeycomb direct from the farmers market, made us a salad with homemade dressing. The butternut squash soup with braised pork belly... to die for! Our entrees were beef wellington (not your traditional with an overload of pastry) and the stuffed pork chop were mouthwatering! Can I come up with any more adjectives? Not likely but I will tell you that we filled up so much on each and every morsel that was put in front of us that we were only able to take 2 bites of our entrees (boxed them to go) and had to pass on dessert. The food is definitely 5 stars and the only reason that I didn't give the experience a 5 star and gave a 4 instead, is because the service, while good, was a bit slow while being overattentive at times. Does that even make sense? :) The other downside? The drive! Holy cow! It is on this very dark and very windy country road and no one tells you this! :) I am sure it is beautiful during the day but quite treacherous at night.

Chef's Quarters. Wow. Nicest room I've ever been in in my life. Private deck with furniture, jacuzzi with view of Mississippi River, fireplace, nice bathroom, comfy bed. We did Chef's Table dining which was really fun. Would recommend this B&B above any other I've visited. Service was fantastic, very professional and friendly.

My husband and I celebrated our first anniversary here and loved it! We enjoyed the hustle and bustle of downtown Galena, and it was perfect to spend the evening/morning several miles outside the city. The location is beautiful - right off the Mississippi. Gorgeous sunsets, quiet, and great service. We enjoyed a romantic, fixed menu dinner in their restaurant - everything was truly delicious! We stayed in the Mississippi and really liked the fireplace, jacuzzi tub, and amazing views. The decor was a bit too folksy - would have rather preferred more chic/modern taste. In room, complimentary coffee, cookies, frig/drinks, and phone service. Owners are very pleasant and the grounds are spectacular. The morning breakfast was brought to our room; hot and tasty! The overall experience was great, however the high price makes it a questionable place to return to (which is why I awarded it 4/5 stars).

First of all, let me start with the arrival to the Goldmoor....the drive up the moutain with the winding roads and beautiful views makes the anticipation of the arrival SO exciting, as you round the bend and see the Goldmoor for the first time, it is really something....like a manor sitting in the middle of nowhere, we knew we were in for something special. When we checked in, the owner Patricia (Pat) came out to say hello and was so warm and friendly. We then walked into our suite and it was like being in a first class hotel with all the charm of a remote location. Beautifully decorated and comfortable with all the charm one would look for in Galena, but with all the modern things two people from the city would need to not feel too far away from home. The breakfast delivered each morning was wonderful! The grounds are spectacular and are so well manicured you can't help but feel like you are on an English countryside estate. This is BY FAR the best place we have stayed in Galena. Close to town and so private you know you won't be bothered. Now on to the EVEN BETTER service than you could EVER get at a hotel.....On Friday night we decided to go to town and on our way back the car broke down on the middle of the dark road. We called the police and they came and called the tow truck. While we were waiting, Pat came driving down the hill on her way home from the Goldmoor. She stopped and made sure we were OK, offered to stay with us and offered us a ride back to the Inn. Since we needed to wait for the tow truck and had a police officer with us, we felt OK, so she (heistantly) left us there - it seemed like she felt like she was abadoning us - it was VERY sweet and very appreciated! The next day - without a car and a little down - Pat called us to make sure we were OK and to see if there was anything she or her husband (Thomas) could do. We regrouped and told her that we appreciated it but we really just needed to find out if there was a car service available to take us to our car (which was towed to Dubuque, IA).....she said there was not point in renting a car - instead her husband drove us to Dubuque and made sure we had things to do to keep us busy all day while we waited. WHERE ELSE WOULD THIS HAPPEN?!?!?! Their open arms and total care for us made us feel like our Mom and Dad were making sure the kids were OK. They were wonderful and besides providing an amazing place to stay, they provided us with the TLC that two people going through a VERY stressful relaxing weekend way would need. I would recomend the Goldmoor Inn not only for the amazing rooms and ammenities, but also for the charming graciousness of the hosts! Thanks to Tom and Pat our weekend was not a total bust and we will FOR SURE be returning to this amazing place!!!!

My wife and I came here this past weekend for a short get away. It was a really cool, quiet place with very friendly folks. We had some dietary restrictions which they were proactive about accomodating. The look and feel of the place is really great, quiet in the middle of a farm land. It's a bit tucked away from the downtown which is nice, but still only a 10 min drive from the Main street in Galena. I would recommend this place anytime. In fact, the views are so pretty, we are thinking of coming back in the summer!

Went to dinner months back, the food &service were excellent. Our server was one of the inn keepers daughters and was very helpful in making a wine selection. You could easily see how the family really cares for their business. Try to make a reservation for sunset as the view is breath taking
