Just took my mother here for brunch and we both found this place to be okay. The menu is large and has something for everyone. The prices are a little higher than your average diner, but I think Symphony's vibe is trying to be a little more upscale than that. I also had a groupon and made a reservation through opentable, so in that sense it was a low risk outing. (Points and vouchers can go a long way.) This is not a place I would tell you to go cross town for, but if you live in the area it is perfectly fine. The service was excellent and the staff friendly. The clientele seemed to be mostly middle aged and senor citizen types.

Just got back from a pleasant brunch at Symphony. Echoing Dee's description that it was "quaint," I thought it was also nicely decorated and a bit laid back. Sort of like a retro-styled diner with a bit of Evanston mixed in. Despite the other reviews, we had excellent service (we came on a weekday morning). Our server was really friendly, attentive and helpful and our coffee cups were always full... We ordered the Chorizo (sausage) and Salsa omlettes (both $6.95 each) which were good. They came with a side order of multi-grain or wheat toast (excellent) hash-browns and a slice of fruit (cantalope - a bit of a strange combination). The omlette was prepared nicely and came with a side of salsa which was tasty.

After talking to people after eating there it turns out there were problems with ALL our dishes. People were just being generous because we were there for a birthday and did not want to upset the birthday girl. Horrible! Mis-cooked food, bad service, horrible.

Worst evening ever. After being seated we waited 20 mins for anyone to approach the table. We ordered a bottle of wine and appetizers. The grilled calamari was served room temp, horrible. Couldn't get waiters attention so had other server return it, and when re-delivered it was 1/2 the size on a bed of lettuce. Ordered dinner, waited an hour for it. and our bottle of wine and glasses were empty. Asked for a glass of wine only, never came, only an apology when check was delivered the "sorry, I forgot". This was $130. I want a refund with tip.. This restaurant, kids crying and the management kids running around banging silverware on stuff notwithstanding was a HUGE disappointment. Had argument with spouse over everything- worst evening ever and would love an apology and a partial refund by the clueless management... NEVER AGAIN - stay away, stay far far away.

I've been many times for brunch and their meals are well above average: delicious crapes and very good waffles. Best to get there early for dinner as this place is often packed. The dinner menu is relatively simple as it's mostly comfort food, but everything is delicious prepared and the staff is very helpful and friendly.

Went here for a friends birthday. It was a huge group (40) and I have to say the service was great. Nothing took long and our waiters were on point. My appetizer was really good I decided on the stuffed mushrooms which were stuffed with pesto and mozzarella. I ordered the butternut squash ravioli and it was just what I expected. Nice sweet and spicy flavor and the cream sauce was good as well. It came with a basic vegetable soup. For dessert I had a latte and carrot which was ok.

I love going here. Last time I ordered the NY Strip and it was one of the BEST STEAKS I have ever had! My wife ordered the rack of lamb. It was amazing. Then we found out it was free range lamb imported from New Zealand. It was one of the BEST TASTING MEALS ANYWHERE AT ANY PRICE! Did I mention the desert? We got the chocolate mouse cake which is made in house. UNBEILIEVEABLE!

I think this place is underrated here on Yelp. I have been there three times for dinner, and it has been consistently excellent. The first time we went, I ordered the perpetual special, a salmon fillet encrusted with pumpkin seeds on top of diced butternut squash all topped with a cilantro cream sauce ($22). My wife was so jealous that she didn't order it after she tasted it. The second time we returned, we both ordered it! After my third and recent visit, I almost ordered the salmon again but instead opted for a rack of lamb with cherry sauce ($25.) It was prepared perfectly to order (medium rare,) and was probably the best rack of lamb dish I've tasted. Try this place for dinner; you won't be dissapointed!

we used a groupon to dine here and did so at dinner. we ordered a bottle of malbec that went well with the stuffed mushroom appetizer. we all ordered sandwiches or salad - the reuben, the bbq pulled pork, fried tilapia and chicken caesar salad. the soup was delicious. my reuben was fine, nothing out of the ordinary about it. the service was very good. our waitress checked up on us often and was nice. i don't go to this part of evanston often but if i ever do i'd probably come back.

Symphonys is upscale but you dont need to wear a ball gown to dine there. Its got just the right amount of class.I wont go as far to call it spectacular, but its good food, good service, and its a little cozy spot to relax at.The food is good and the price ain't bad.

I frequent Symphony's quite a bit for brunch. They have the best breakfast meals--the chicken and eggs and the French Foursome are my favorite. The service is great too. And for those people that could never wake up early enough for places that only serve breakfast till 10 or noon, this place is perfect for you. They serve breakfast pretty late. i've also been here for dinner a couple of times but their dinner menu is nothing to write home about and the desserts weren't that great thus the 4 stars. I highly recommend it for Brunch but I would pass on Dinner.

Definitely a fan of this place, which I've been to several times lately. The breakfasts are delicious. It's friendly, there's a good vibe. Sometimes it's a little slow, but the servers check in with you. One of the few breakfast places in north Evanston that isn't completely tiny and crowded-feeling. It's worth it.

I give this place one star not because of the food, but because of the absolutely horrendous service. It wasn't just us she was rude and nasty toward, it was everyone including coworkers. Also, they ran out of menus. How does that happen? Are they not expecting customers? Well perhaps not with the quality of service they provide. We decided to go here for breakfast on a whim. Our experience started out well, the hostess was pleasant, it smelled like fresh made pancakes, we were seated right away with menus (unlike other customer), and then it all fell a part. After a 10 minute wait for service, I said to my husband "lets go, this has disaster written all over it", but just then a waitress arrived. The first thing out of her mouth was "I'm not supposed to be your waitress, but you don't have one, so I guess I have to take your order". Not a good start and not my problem. After we gave her our order, she whirled away without a word. About 10 minutes later she arrived with our food which she sent crashing to the table as she literally threw the plates down. She asked if we wanted ketchup or hot sauce, when my husband answered yes, she rolled her eyes and huffed away only to bring the requested items to the wrong table. We had to ask another waitress for ketchup, who was pleasant and didn't roll her eyes. I heard our waitress at another table say "you ready?", in an irritated tone, and when they said no she slammed her hands on the chair she was leaning on, grunted and stormed off. She never came back to see how our food was. Finally it was time for our check, which was again thrown at me without a word. Needless to say I would never recommend this restaurant. The food isn't worth the abuse, but if you do go and are seated in the section with a server who looks like she has a skunk sitting on her head, asked to be moved immediately.

Went for dinner and the food was absolutely terrible. I had risotto and it was like a heated Healthy Choice from 2002 that someone forgot in the office freezer. I didn't eat it, and wasn't offered anything else. I found this place very, very strange and wondered how it thrives on a busy strip off Central. Then again, the Central Subway is the worst I've ever been to, I hate Foodstuffs, and the Starbucks is full of rude people so perhaps the bar is set very low "up nort." Service was on the crabby side, but tolerable.

Well, OK, 3 1/2. We really wanted to like this place more than we did because of chats about it with Dee W. and Jess S's reminiscences (I too went there with grandparents for grilled cheese during one of this location's previous incarnations.) We got off to a great start: an order of each, fried and grilled calamari. And we should have stopped right there - we would have saved about $40 and had happier memories. The pretty-okay soup and salad (and garlic bread) had us filled to the gills (so to speak.) The reasonably priced entrees disappointed. The Whitefish Limone while tasty, was a mighty meager portion and my Seafood Pescatore (on linguine) while brimming with seafood was bland and boring (fortunately, I'm very good at doctoring leftovers - so I did enjoy several lunches afterwards.) Dessert? You've gotta be kidding! Our waitress was sweet but clueless. But I think I'm going to go back and check out their lunch menu - which SOUNDS really tempting... I'll keep you posted...

Last time 5 stars, but a knockdown to 3 because this time the service was so much worse and our food was below par. Went on a Thursday night around 7. Packed when we walked in, but there was an open table. Crowd still tends to be a little older and more sophisticated, but that seems to match the price point and neighborhood. We were not given menus and they had no bothered to put down place settings before we arrived. It looked like they were understaffed this evening. We waited forever to take our order, we were ready to order food with our drinks, but the waitress ran away before we had a chance. Salads came out in an acceptable time. The main entrées took a bit too long to come out. I had the goulash, which was the special - I guess it was sitting in a slow cooker all day and was not stirred regularly - there were parts that were cold while the rest was mild. My companion's fish was lackluster as well. We also waited entirely too long for the check - I had my credit card out when she walked over, but the waitress again ran away before I could even hand her the card. Took another 10 minutes to check out. When we got there they were packed, but less than half by about 7:30, so not sure why we were give such inattentive service. While the portions were large, I don't feel we received good value for our time and money this time around - last time the food was good enough to get it to 4.5 with a round up, not this time.

I keep trying this place because it is in my neighborhood and am never really impressed. It is fine for breakfast, but not amazing. It is a good place to sit and talk or have a business meeting because it is cozy and calm and always seems to take forever. However, I would rather go to Bluestone across the street.

This place isn't as infamous as Walker Bros. so there isn't a wait on the weekends for brunch. Food is good and priced right. Not too much of an elaborate menu but familiar items. I had the Belgium waffles with American toppings- strawberrys, bananas, and blueberrys- it was good and fresh but they give only one medium size waffle- $9. Others looke tasty as well.

After hitting the usual fare in Evanston numerous times, decided to go a bit farther north on the Ol' Green Bay Rd. and hit the Central Ave area. Great couple blocks of shops and we stopped in to Symphony on a whim for a late lunch because, uh, "it looked cute." Fortunately the food matched the decor. I had a veggie foccacia sandwich with pesto mayo. Sizable, and perfectly grilled veggies. The lunch menu has about 20 sandwiches, entrees, and about a dozen salads. It looked like they also served breakfast at the same time as lunch, probably a weekend thing, but the guy next to us had a HUGE plate of eggs benedict and taters. Symphony has a cool vibe, the waitstaff were super friendly and actually seemed to enjoy working there. I'll definitely be going back there to try dinner and peruse some of the other "super cute" shops in the neighborhood (eyes rolling :)

My parents really like this place. However I've never been impressed. I always expect flavor and get "bland." It was a different restaurant when I was a little girl. My grandparents would take me here (and to Ridgeview) for grilled cheese. And those were some dank grilled cheese sandwiches. Let me tell you.

I just returned from dinner on a Sat evening at Symphony Cafe. We made a 7pm reservation for 4. When we arrived there were very few people dining there. We were given our choice of tables. We selected a lovely table in the back, well away from the draft of the front door and secluded from the hustle/bustle noises of a kitchen. We were delighted. We spared no expense ordering 2 bottles of wine, an assortment of appetizers, entres, and desserts. The food was good, not great but good. We were mostly interested in sharing a new dining experience with our friends whom we had not seen in 8 months. During the appetizers, a group of 8 were seated right behind us. They were immediately loud and proceeded to get louder and louder as the meal went on. The noise was actually painful and we could not even speak to each other at our table. Finally, before dessert, I went to speak to the manager. I suggested that they ask the table to enjoy their conversations using their "indoor voices". Alas, the manager did nothing...absolutely nothing. We dropped quite a bit of money there that night but could not have a normal conversation at our table. As we were leaving, the "loud patrons" began shouting drunken insults at us as we left. We had not even tried to engage them in conversation. We had barely ever looked at them. It was unbelievable but I was most disappointed in the management for not stepping in. The food was not so good that I would return for that alone but the experience was horrible. I will never return and I WILL tell many other people what happened there. If tonight, a Sat night, is any indication, other people have already decided to go somewhere else, and from now on, I will too. Shame on the management of Symphony Cafe.

Hands down the best place to eat in Evanston. We eat her at least a couple times a week for breakfast/lunch. Everything is amazing-service, food, portions. I almost don't want the secret to get out because we can still usually find a seat. I am changing my review on this place. After 3 horrible experiences-1 piece of bad chicken they would not compensate, and 2 30 minute wait for our drinks, this place was crossed off our list. Too bad-it was good when it first opened and then steadily went downhill.

I had a great lunch here today... been eating in and around Evanston for years now and have never tried Symphony's till today. It's super cute decor, friendly staff and they had my favorite butternut squash ravioli. I'm sold! I'm adding it to the lunch rotation for sure.

I love this place. Everytime I go I get great service, great food and the staff is awesome. Now I'm not a calamari fan, but I can devour a plate of fried calamari from here. There steaks are tender and juicy and cooked to perfection. The pasta's are great and you get more than just the typical marinara. It's very family friendly and you always feel welcome.

I had the pork tenderloin with a cherry-port reduction. It wildly exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend this dish. The salad was okay, nothing memorable. The wine list was disappointing. Too many of the usual kinds of wine on the list. I was looking forward to the valpolicella that was on the wine list online (that definitely would have rocked with my entree), but discovered that it was no longer on the menu. So I drank iced tea instead, which was fine. Very good service, also. Everybody in the group seemed very pleased with their meals. I want to give it three and a half stars, like someone else mentioned in another review, and I couldn't see fit to do four stars. I give it a strong three stars.

I tried Symphony over the weekend for the first time. The restaurant has a great atmosphere and our waiter provider excellent service. I had the lasagna fresca and my fiance had the seafood pescatore. We enjoyed both dishes. Nice presentation, good ingredients, and great flavor. I will go back for dinner and would like to try their brunch.

I was a regular customer, always the same order. The last time the person questioned if I wanted an "entree" cheeseburger. I didn't have an answer and he didn't help me, so I gave up, found a menu and called back to try to order again. I had accidentally picked up a lunch menu (it was dinner time) so I was confused about the price. The new person began explaining to me the difference between the lunch menu and dinner menu. I realized my mistake and said it doesn't matter I just want to order, but she continued going on about lunch and dinner. I told her again that I just wanted to order, but she refused to stop explaining why I needed to know the difference. Finally I lost my temper, and said "Please stop arguing with me and take my order". The food arrived ice cold, cheesecake completely smashed. I called to complain, got the same person who refused to connect me with the manager and told me that she packed my order herself and I shouldn't bother ordering from them again. fine by me.

Busy. Bad service by a charming, overworked, brand-new-to-this country and brand-new-to-food-service server, Took forever for a bowl of oatmeal and an omelete. The bagels were cold. The cream cheese from a container was too soft and had been sitting out, apparently. Before we walked in here, my friend warned me that it would be like eating breakfast in a hotel. That's exactly what it was like. Plus, there was the time honored buzz kill for restaurants: a shrieking kid whose parents lacked the class to remove from the situation when it got out of hand. The only reason we even went there is because we had already parked (no small chore mid-morning in Evanston), and the nearby place that we wanted to go to was closed. What a waste. At least my friend's company was excellent!

We live very close to Symphony's and so we go there frequently. They have great breakfasts - a very wide variety with a lot of really healthy options. Egg Beaters, eggs cooked in Pam, goat cheese, wheat toast, and fruit sides. Breakfast is served late and they honest to God have the best Mimosas anywhere in town. Their lunch and dinner menu are great as well. There is a wide variety of pasta, risotto, meat, fish and baked dishes. They are more than happy to alter dishes to your preferences - if you'd like a different pasta, no broccoli, chicken instead of steak - you name it, they will do it. It is a great alternative to the over -priced, over-crowded, over-rated Bluestone restaurant across the street. A note to those like I who appreciate a little booze w/food - they only have wine and beer so no Bloody Mary's or mixed drinks.

I had a hard time deciding what to get, as they have a lot of good chicken and veggie options, which rarely happens when I'm out in Chicago. I ended up getting the Philly Chicken with garlic mashed potatoes on the side; LOVED the mashed potatoes and thought the chicken was nicely grilled, but nothing spectacular. The pecan sweet bun afterward though - that was excellent. I plan on going back for lunch for one of their delicious looking and tasting salads. For a good, hearty and healthy lunch in a very cute cafe come here.

Symphony Cafe is truly one of the best breakfast places in the Evanston community. As you walk into the restaurant the mood is relaxing and "homey." The servers are usually very kind. Service is also quick, but not rushed. Their is usually not a long wait for a table. The first couple of times I went to Symphony cafe for breakfast my meal of choice was the french toast with bacon. The French toast was amazing, nice and fluffy and plenty of it. Now I go for an Egg White Omelette with mushroom and spinach and whole wheat toast on the side. The Egg White Omelette was also delicious. Symphony also serves great lunch and dinner. I have great memories of symphony as my family and I have gone every Saturday or Sunday when I am in town.

I went to this small, dark, quiet restaurant on Saturday evening with my family and my boyfriend's family. My BF's parents frequent Symphony when they attend events at Northwestern, as it is right down the street. The entree menu is very broad, and it ranges from pasta and vegetarian (but probably not vegan) dishes, to meat, poultry and seafood. My mother and I shared veal and lamb -- both were great, but I preferred the veal. My dad had an excellent seafood pasta dish, and everyone else had fish and steaks. The ingredients were very fresh and well-presented. The accompaniments to the entrees were delicious as well, and the waitstaff was receptive to a couple of special requests. The ONLY reason Symphony gets four, as opposed to five, stars is that the appetizer and dessert menus seemed like afterthoughts and were not as extensive as the multitude of entree selections. We plan to dine here again, because there were many other items on the menu that we still want to sample!

There were 7 of us and we made reservation!! Awesome benefit for a large party. Sophia (?) was our server and was truly superlative! Knew and recalled accommodations and requests. Food -Skillets were large and savory. We all took bags home. Great variety and ambiance is pleasurable with some nice art work on display. Can hardly wait till we get there again!! Next time we visit Chicago from the east will find us there for brunch!

Went there for a brunch on Labor Day, thought the service quality was much to be desired. The following occurred meals came out at different times, table wasn't set up when sat down, had to ask multiple times to remind server to bring us certain items requested, etc. Food was adequate, but poorly plated. It seemed like they just threw it on the plate without any thought. Not itching to go back to this place.

My brother and I came to Chicago to visit our dad for the weekend and we came here for Saturday breakfast/lunch. At first glance, the menu looked pretty good, not overwhelming and somewhat reasonably priced. However, the kitchen managed to mess up a good chunk of our orders. I ordered a crepe with Strawberry and Nutella, which ended up coming out with extra blueberries and chocolate chips. Not a terrible mistake, but still a mistake. My dad ordered the Gypsy skillet with multigrain toast and sunny side up eggs. When the food came out, he was given rye toast and clearly over easy eggs. The waitress was kind enough to take the skillet back, and when the skillet came back, the eggs were still over easy. He also had a heated discussion about the difference between rye and multigrain bread, and the waitress spoke to the manager, which we could overhear. The correct bread eventually came out My brother ordered the Gypsy skillet as well with over easy eggs, and although the eggs were fifty percent correct. One egg was over cooked, cooked over hard. The waitress was kind and responsive to the errors, but the mistakes seemingly made by the kitchen cannot be overlooked. On the positive side, the green tea I had was a really flavorful, floral jasmine.

Outstanding higher quality food presented in a very comfortable setting. Always love their wonderful fish dishes paired with tasty side dishes. This is why you want to go out and eat in a great restaurant. The mouse chocolate cakes was moist and yummy. Even the steak hamburger and fries were perfect.

I've been here so many times and shame, shame, shame on me for keeping my rating at 3 stars. My favorite is the steak skillet, Pavlov's dog - I can relate with you as I'm starting to salivate - just thinking of the succulent pieces of steak, the cheddar cheese and hash browns, veggies, two over easy eggs with raisin toast, butter and jelly. There you have it!!!! Four stars!!! Make sure to ask for some Tabasco for a little Louisiana flavor.

Another great meal at Symphony's! There were only two other tables on this night when we came in for dinner, so service by "Victoria" was great. The chicken noodle soup was delicious, and as usual I had the side salad with the homemade balsamic vinagraitte. This dressing is thick, creamy, and tangy. We ordered the chicken parmesan again, which again, was a massive portion, and a chicken dish which was one of the specials. It was rolled chicken stuffed with spinach, red peppers and goat cheese in a tomato cream sauce, with mashed potatoes. This dish was very tasty and more than enough for one person. Entrees range between $16-26, with the most expensive dish being the filet at $31 or $32. At these prices Symphony's is not somewhere that my family would come often for nightly dinner (unless you just order a sandwich or salad), but it is perfect for a nice dinner or special occasion.

I've been patronizing Symphony's Cafe since August 2013, soon after hubby and I moved to Chicago. Although this place has received mixed reviews from people's who judged from all sorts of standard; holistically, it's a great restaurant to have a nice gourmet meal with your friend(s) or your significant other. Yes, they do seem to have the groupon or the restaurant certificate deals circulating around, but don't you always want to save when it comes to food? We always come in with either a groupon or a restaurant certificate. I have to be honest. The food isn't, out of this world, awesome. Nevertheless, with the ambiance, cleanliness, service, and taste of food, it's a quality restaurant on a Central St. in Evanston. There's not much I can complain about. In the past, I've tried their dinner specials, such as the tuna salad with wasabi and salmon Wellington. I highly recommend the salmon Wellington. From what I remembered, it was a very comforting dish. The portion was generous. It was delicious, and like some others mentioned, exquisite. I had the skirt steak Dijon tonight, and I asked my steak to be cooked medium. It was good, but not fantastic. I would probably stick with my salmon Wellington from now on. They have a few vegetarian options. Hubby had the symphony's rotolo. He enjoyed it, but I must have a completely different taste bud in comparison to my hubby's. I thought the sauce with sundry tomatoes was a bit sweet. I believe all entrees come with a choice of soup or salad. They also offer complementary bread unless you decline. I'm not trying to advocate for Symphony's, but I realized that many yelpers' reviews were slightly unfair to it. To be explicit, Symphony's Cafe doesn't share the same grade as Gejas's Cafe on Armitage, but this is definitely NOT a place similar to Danny's or The Baker's Square. In other words, it has its own "niche" in the restaurant business. Perhaps we have been fortunate that we never had any negative experience on service or food. I sincerely want to give a shout-out to Symphony's Cafe for what it represents. Traveling to Evanston isn't always convenient for both of us, yet Symphony's is always on top of our list of restaurants and will try to make a point coming here.

Service is spectacular! It's the highlight of the place. Decor is good but the food isn't as creative as you would expect from such an interesting joint. Had the gypsy skillet and it was good, hearty but not original. Hash browns with eggs, ham, mushrooms and three cheeses. One that was like a sliced American fake cheese. Solid breakfast but I wanted something more and different. No complaints just not 4star awesome. Except for the service. 5 stars for the service.

The food here is amazing and I had the best service from a waiter named Misha. He was super helpful in helping me decide what I wanted and recommended I get calamari which was fried to perfection. Also he was super cute which made my experience way more fun. Their in house caesar dressing was to die for I should have ordered an extra side. Definitely will come here again.

Pleasant atmosphere and friendly service in this breakfast/lunch cafe. The menu has a wide selection of the standard breakfast fare with the addition of some breakfast crepes. The Nutella crepes and the Monte Cristo crepes were hardy portions and my dining partners were satisfied with both flavor and presentation. Sadly, my over easy eggs were over cooked and missing the all important runny yolk. (I judge a breakfast place heavily on their skill in properly cooking eggs) and my hash brown and french toast arrived only mildly warm. This may have been due to the size of our party (6)my order was the last to be served. My guess is and that the sides waited on the plate while the other orders were prepared and then my eggs were cooked at the end. Overall an inexpensive, casual, spot for a good basic breakfast. (Sorry, we were on a tight timeline or I would have sent the eggs back and given the cook a second chance) Since there is no 1/2 star, I've given the 3rd star more for my dining partners' experiences.

I have to bump this joint up a star after my dinner last weekend. Long story short--the spaghetti and meatballs was tremendous. Pasta is a very, very rare order for me in a restaurant, and I probably have never ordered spaghetti and meatballs in my entire life. But there was something about that night that made it sound so appealing, so I pulled the trigger; and boy, did I hit a home run. Or rather, they did. The meatballs were really good, but it was the sauce that blew me away. I don't know how they are making their marinara, but I cannot recall ever tasting better. My only complaint is that there was too much sauce and not enough pasta, which is no complaint at all, really, since it meant taking home the leftovers and eating it again a few days later. So Symphony's may have converted me into a spaghetti-and-meatballs guy--but only at Symphony's.

The feta cheese/egg white omelette was great. As were the hash browns and toast. They had a unique take on a Monte Cristo sandwich. Basically they just used french toast for the bread. No frying, no powdered sugar. It was different, to be sure, a little soggy, but good. However, avoid the garlic mashed potatoes. Imagine the most toxic, overpoweringly harsh, garlic flavor you have ever tasted. Now ruin some mashed potatoes with them. There you have it.

I am not sure why it took me so long to discover Symphony's, but they are an Evanston gem. The food is fresh and done right. Their lunch menu has both breakfast and lunch items. The omelets are huge and packed with ingredients. My personal favorite is their Reuben. It is almost like a grilled cheese with corned beef packed into the middle. It's outstanding! I usually get a side of cottage cheese instead of their fries, but the fries are to die for! There is always a bus boy walking around making sure your water/soda is full. If you need a solid lunch spot on the north end of Evanston then this is a great choice!

We loved discovering this quaint spot in Evanston last night. The service was pleasant and prompt and the food just enough different to keep us coming back. Corn chowder was awesome and the Salmon Wellington delicious and rich. Thanks for making this a special place!

Two stars, why? Bc their food is delicious....when they actually bring it. We order from here all the time and the service gets worse every time. This was the last straw. They usually forget a coffee or a cake but this time, they forgot half of our order (the whole office ordered, only half got their food) We waited almost 2 hours for lunch after ordering. When we realized the food was missing (we also had no utensils) I called, and I was told they are super busy today so they will refund for the food they didn't bring. Not bring us the food we were missing... Don't bother ordering from here if you're looking to eat your food today... It my never show up.

Damn this place frustrates me. It's right by my house, has excellent ambiance, and the service has, in my experience, always been fine. But the food doesn't stack up. Every time I'm here, something, based on the menu description, sounds really good. And then it is either not very good or just okay. The salads and soups that accompany entrees are generally fine. They whip up decent mashed potatoes. But Symphony's can't sear a steak. They overcook pork chops. Vegetable sides are unappetizing. Flavor profiles of dishes are generally off, especially pasta dishes, and in particular seafood pasta dishes. Whoever is responsible for conjuring up their recipes isn't very good at it. And their desserts are sometimes clearly old. I would really love for Symphony's to get a handle on their issues, because I want this place to be good. Definitely not worth the money at full price. Borderline with one of their 20% off mailer coupons or a Groupon.

From the outside Symphony's looks like it might be a period diner, but in fact the interior is bright, modern, sleek and very appealing. So is the service, which is very friendly. While a large section of the menu is breakfast, there are some great sandwiches and entrees here as well. I had the Chicken and Vegetables, which were stir fried to caramelized perfection. On a tip from another Yelper I ordered the accompanying salad with garlic dressing. Wow, was that fantastic! Fortunately I got it on the side, and while I used very little on the salad, I saved it and couldn't resist dipping my chicken in it. Great combination. I'll definitely be back to explore more of this menu.

Nice location in northern Evanston. It's comfortable with a calm colored decor. Menu offers a nice selection of dishes. They make a really good French toast with a vanilla flavor to it. I do agree with the comments on high prices. They are, I feel, on the high side for the type of food. It's not like it's a specialty cuisine or high quality ingredients. I also think it's odd they position themselves as a steak house. I've lived in Evanston almost 20 years and would never think of them for steak. Breakfast or lunch, yes. The decor is like an everyday nice diner, not a steak house. I think that's a stretch of marketing. All in all, decent food, highly priced.

My husbands in the hospital and we had a few things delivered for a change of pace... the chicken parm steak salad and key lime pie. I would highly recommend the pie, it was the best we've ever had. FYI, they only deliver through grub hub. Pricier but worth it.

Love this spot for breakfast/brunch/lunch. It is a great place to take family (particularly grandparents) - super adorable interior and the wait staff is pleasant, quick, and responsive. I have been here several times and the food is always wholesome and satisfying. This past visit, I had the grilled calamari salad which was delightful - it came with black olives and capers and was lightly tossed in a balsamic vinaigrette - great if you like calamari (though note that the calamari is not fried). For breakfast, you cannot go wrong with an omelette (the feta & spinach is a good go to) or blueberry pancakes at this place.

Robert, my server, is very laid back, yet attentive. Great service, a prerequisite to any sit down restaurant. As to the food, I had the Greek omelette with egg beaters for about $11, a little more than market, but well worth the money. The omelette was substantial. They used really quality ingredients, it was well worth the extra buck or two. I'll certainly come back.

Great place for a nice quiet breakfast. We were turned off by the line at Walker Bros but thankfully we found this place. Seems like they may get more customers just because of this plain fact. It's quiet and the staff were friendly.. Our waiter was Andy, and he was good. There was a moment I felt a little ignored since the "main" waitress came to ask if everyone was doing well, and she forgot us. Maybe it was a fluke. Hubby ordered steak and eggs and loved it! I ordered one of my favs: lox and bagel. The salmon was delicious and dare I say it better texture than the ones we usually get at New York Bagels in Lincolnwood. Overall a nice way to start off my birthday at Symphony's.

Average service, took longer than it should have to get a high chair (had to ask multiple times), food was brought out cold and then once heated up was average. Expected better especially in Evanston and for the price. Will not return.

We went there because the bluestone had a long wait time due to a NW game and I had a simple burger and it was very good! Also the pea soup was very tasty as well, along with great service. We will return!

As mentioned in my previous review, one of the stand out features of Symphony's is the lengths they will go to accommodate food preferences. Don't want particular veggies in your grilled vegetable salad? No problem. My son wants plain bread not garlic bread? No problem. On our visit this week my husband mentioned to the waiter that he remembered there used to be a portabello mushroom sandwich on the menu. The waiter didn't know if there had been, but immediately said they could make one for him. He checked with the kitchen, came back, and asked my husband what kind of bread, cheese, and toppings he'd like. It's rare enough for a restaurant to offer substitutions, but to custom make an item that isn't even on the menu is truly outstanding customer service. And the sandwich was huge and very good. Put my equally huge and good eggplant parmesan sandwich to shame. Love this place!

This place to me seems like a classic example of one of those where I wouldn't go if I didn't have a groupon (on groupon all the time for $15 for $30). The food is above average and the first time I went had a pretty good eggplant parmesan with pasta. They have an interesting menu but pricing seems a little on the high side especially for dinner. For brunch/lunch the groupon is a very good deal IMO. Both times I went though I felt like service was ok to interesting. One of the times it took a while to get the correct number of settings. Didn't seem to have an issue with speed as food came out pretty quickly. However, for what it's worth, the second time I went we were seated to where we could see into the off kitchen area. I noticed that after a waiter poured a can of soda into a glass that he then drank the remaining soda out of the can. Not sure if that is ok in the restaurant world, but thought it was interesting. As I said, I would probably return but not one of my first choices.

This is a very nice, typically quiet place that is great for a quick weekend breakfast. The breakfast menu is extensive for a place better known for its lunch and dinner. I have been coming for many years, but my most recent experience was quite disappointing. Not due to the waitstaff or food, but an exceptionally incompetent maitre d', who took my name and sat two parties of the same size who arrived and gave their names after my party. I stood directly in front of her while she seated these other parties. When confronted her reaction was to talk over me, asking me for my name again. She promptly seated my party, but did not apologize for her mistake. She is not a good face for Symphony's at all.

This is a great go to place for a comfortable meal that is always good. There are numerous menu items to choose from for just about any taste. All of the chicken dishes are great and try the goulash. My only complaint has been one dish coming out steaming hot and the other cold. This has happened two times and we spoke with the manager/owner about it. We'll see what happens when we go back again.

Two friends of mine are regulars at Symphony's Café on Central Street in Evanston, and one Friday night they asked me to join them there for dinner. We made reservations, but about an hour before the time we were set to arrive, I was famished and figured it was worth a try to see if we could get in early. Perhaps it was the weather, or perhaps it was early enough (we arrived around 6 pm), but we were able to get in and be seated right away at our choice of table. Always a people watcher, I chose one near the window. While the menu is not terribly long, it offers a wide variety of choices. There are "organic chicken" dishes, pastas, sandwiches, seafood, and "off the grill" (which is their term for meaty dishes) options to choose from, along with a vegetarian section. I chose the fried calamari as my appetizer, and a grilled angus skirt steak (medium, always) as my main dish. The dinners come with your choice of soup or salad - I chose a salad, which oddly arrived before my appetizer. While I fully realize that my favorite type of salad starts with a base of iceberg lettuce, "the one lettuce devoid of any nutritional value" I am always told, I wasn't that big of a fan of the "mixed greens" lettuce the salad contained. I was happier with the fried calamari, which had many meaty-yet-not-too chewy pieces, served alongside a great cocktail sauce that had just the right amount of horseradish. The calamari was served "over greens," which before it arrived, I thought was an odd and tricky choice - if the calamari was too greasy or not well-battered, the chef was definitely taking a chance that the greens would be overly greasy or full of flaked off batter, but this was not the case at all, and I even found myself munching on the garnish of greens. My angus skirt steak was great. It was cooked just the way I liked it, and although it is generally served over mashed potatoes with broccoli and carrots, I chose to forgo the potatoes and opted for extra vegetables. My server didn't bat an eye when I asked for this substitution, which I liked, as some restaurants are very strict on not changing any menu items. I have been told in the past that "our dishes are supposed to be served in a certain way, and we will not deviate from that." I was happy to see that was not the case at Symphony's. One of my other dining companions had the Chicken & Sausage Rigaté, and it was absolutely delicious. I was tempted to order this myself, but was nervous that the "lightly spicy tomato cream sauce" would be too spicy for me. Again, against the norm, I eschew any sort of spiciness in my food. I have simply never understood the appeal of the burning tongue sensation while eating! While I don't drink, and therefore cannot comment on the bar menu, the small bar in the dining room I was seated in was beautifully lit and very attractive. I noticed that all the other diners in my view did order drinks and they seemed happy with their beverages. I wouldn't recommend heading to Symphony's Café unless you have time to sit, or if you don't think you have much to talk about with the others at your table. At times, service was almost painfully slow, but once the food did arrive, the time spent wondering where the food was was pretty much forgotten. There are more items on the menu that I would like to try, perhaps the Butternut Squash Ravioli, or the Chicken Genovese Sautéed chicken with asparagus, sun-dried tomato & goat cheese.

I tried the Symphony Cafe at 1945 Central Street in Evanston this morning since I was early for an eye appt. across the street. I ordered my customary omelet, which included among other items grilled onions, grilled dark "until they are sweet". Mind you I get this virtually everywhere that I go when ordering an omelet, one reason aside from the fact that I like it that way, is that I am allergic to raw onions and cooking them through removes the component to which I am allergic. No sooner than placing the order I heard my server ask the "chef" if he had ever heard of this and if he could do it. I am not sure if it was the server's voice or the "chef" but the response was a condescending utterance of "ridiculous". If it WAS the chef, I certainly heard nothing from the other person defending my desire as a customer. The food here is good, but I have never been treated in this unconscionably rude manner in any other establishment in over 45 years as an adult patron. Needless to say I wish to apologize to the "chef" for hurting his sensibilities, but the only tip I wish to leave is that you are free to have whatever opinions you wish to hold - but when they come from the request of a customer , I am not at all interested in hearing those opinions. Also needles to say, I will not be coming back nor will I recommend this to any of my other "ridiculous" friends....

We have gone to Symphony Cafe several times now. Great location near some nice independent shops. Inexpensive metered street parking right in front. Free on Sundays. The food is always good and not overpriced. Excellent salads. Good selection of beer and wine. Only minor complaint is sometimes the service can be a little slow but Nothing to get in a twist over.

Went back for a 4th time and used up the last Groupon. I told myself I would not order breakfast food again and would finally try a sandwich. I did not. I got pancakes again but man, their pancakes are good. I might not have always loved their service, or sausage and my friend was always unhappy with her food in some way or another, but we both agree their pancakes are good. The last time I ordered pancakes I was unhappy with their eggs and sausage so this last time I ordered just a short stack of pancakes, nothing else and they were GOOD. I'll probably never go back to Symphony's since I don't live in Evanston, and in fact live even farther from it than I use to, and because I refuse to buy anymore Groupons for them, but their pancakes are good, fluffy and delicious. If I ever find myself here again I know I can count on the pancakes .... but I think that's about it.

Symphony's Cafe is located on Central Street, about two blocks west of Green Bay Road. Parking is always a problem in the busy area--your choice is metered street parking or a small, metered public lot about a block west of the restaurant. A friend asked me to meet him here for a Sunday breakfast/brunch/lunch. They were busy and it took our waiter a long time to take our drink order and take our food order. I ordered a veggie omelet, tomato slices (instead of hash browns) and coffee. The food and coffee were average. I didn't have the opportunity to investigate the entire front of the house, but the area we were in was cramped. We sat at a table and the back of my chair was touching the fellow's chair behind me. It took some gymnastics to enter and exit the inside seat. All in all, my first, and probably my last visit here was average.

I've been by Symphony's many times as I visit their neighbor, The Spice House when in the area. But today, I had a Groupon and a yearning for lunch, so my mission was to check out the restaurant this time. What might have been a four star review is three stars due to the service. My waitress was pleasant - no issues with that, but was often off the floor. She was also hosting, so I figured that maybe she was busy and unable to attend to the tables. Her absence wasn't an issue to me so much as I wasn't in a hurry, but I also noticed one table walking up to the host stand to get their check and a table next to me that needed something and had no clue where the staff was. I was there around 2PM, so it wasn't in the middle of a rush. I did receive my check and having already given the waitress my Groupon, I just needed to pay it, so I took it to the stand up front. Much to my surprise, there was the waitress sitting at a round with other staff. So her absence had nothing to do with being busy at all. I will say that the food I had was very good - a Salmon Dolce dish. Came with a good sauce that I dipped the broccoli in - not really a broccoli fan, but could eat it everyday with the sauce on it. Cubed potatoes also had a great flavor as well. And the salad that came ahead of the entree was excellent as well - dressing on the side and cucumbers rather than tomatoes atop the greens - loved it. I'll be back if I'm in the area and feel a little hungry - but unlike today when I went there by design, I don't see myself making this restaurant as a primary destination.

My husband and I went here because of a groupon I found online. We had a reservation for 8pm but it probably wasn't necessary as it was not crowded when we arrived. The service was great, and the menu has a decent selection which we appreciated. We both ended up ordering specials that evening as opposed to menu staples but we also ordered the bruschetta as an appetizer (so good). Overall, we left pleased - my only complaint is that they only offer beer and wine. My husband and I tend to prefer liquor if given the option but you won't find a full bar here (FYI).

Symphony's finds itself in a tricky niche. They try to be upscale, and charge their patrons as such. However, their food, while good is little better than what can be had from anywhere else in town, and pales in comparison to Terra. If you eat there it is slightly eclectic and awkward but not overpoweringly so. What saves this place is that they usually have a good Groupon deal for half off which is definitely worth while. It delivers which is nice but this is not the classy date spot you are looking for, plus its a bit out of the way. If you do go there I recommend both the Lamb Rack and Chicken Florentine, the burgers leave much to be desired but that isnt why you came here anyway.

  • Rohan D.

I'm going to review this place from one narrow perspective, if you're back in town for a Northwestern home football game, you came sensibly early to find parking, and you want to eat before the game. I've been going to home games for a couple of decades now and tried all the possibilities. The breakfasts were pretty good, the lunches and dinners less so, the reason we stopped was that the service was never efficient. Now it may seem a bit unfair to review service based on the pre-game crowds, but it's not like they should be taken by surprise anymore. We gave them a few tries, but they just couldn't get us in and out, with accuracy on the food orders. So, the place might be worth a try on any other day and time, but if it looks crowded just peeking in the window, and you want to make kickoff, move along and either find someplace else, or get your food in the stadium.

I don't know about all this negative reviews but I always had great experience at Symphony's Cafe and so did all my friends. The food is delicious, the servers are awesome. I have been going to Symphony's Cafe for about 4-6 years and didn't have a single negative experience here. James, our server for past couple of times has been very helpful in suggesting entree's to my friends and at times even to me. Entree's are big enough to share between two. I love going to Symphony's Cafe and I will continue to go. Don't let the negative reviews stop you from going here, give it a try and you won't regret it.

I have had better meals at Old County Buffet. Seriously wanted to like this place and it looked so cute from outside. Terrible. I see other reviews saying that only the service is bad but I just ordered delivery and the food was atrocious. The spaghetti was watery, there was basically no sauce. Also for 16 bucks the amount of pasta was ridiculously little. The flavor sucked and the meatballs were dry. The chicken parm looked like puke and tasted worse. I'm currently in the toilet writing this review only minutes after finishing. Something absolutely wrong with that place, I'm thinking about notifying them that the food is tainted. Ill have plenty of time don't think ill be out of the bathroom for a while. Disgusting place. Terrible food. NEVER EVER GO HERE. youre better off with creamette pasta and some prego. I'm literally sick because of this crappy dump.

DINNER, grilled calamari was soft fresh NOT rubber on a salad bed with a delicious tangy vinegrette sauce. MMMMMM. The Chicken Noodle soup was the best I ever had anywhere anytime of all places I have been to. I will crave it till I die. You will not have a better chicken noodle than this one. The seafood noodle entrees had MORE SEAFOOD THAN NOODLES, My friend ordered Seafood Pescatore, had mussels in it, there were about 25 mussels in it and lots of large shrimp. I had the Seafood Linguine that had so many scallops in it I lost count..like 4 in every spoonful. It had lots of large shrimp and the lemon broth was to die for. It was so good I ate the whole plate. The special Entree was Beef Stroganoff, I asked the waiter if I could just have a small sample to taste and it came right away with two forks and it was VERY VERY GOOD!!!!!!!!! and I was not charged anything for that. The waiter recommended for dessert Chocolate Mousse Cake.. it was everything you want of chocolate cake but FORGOT.....as this cake melted in your mouth, so moist, so what cake should always be.... with NOT a heavy frosting but a THICK light creamy sensuous chocolate "frost" as we called it. This was not only the best meal I have had in the last year ...it may be the best I have ever had out. No kdding. This food is GREAT. Go here if you can. It is my new MUST GO TO even though I live downtown in chicago. I hope you do go if you read this. BEER AND WINE ONLY. But an Extensive list.

I had lunch here recently with a friend. We picked the location because it was convenient to where she works. I had the squash ravioli and I didn't care for them as the sauce had pieces of some unidentifiable green herb or vegetable in it. They had a crisp, but gritty texture and weren't listed on the description of the entree. My friend had the salmon dolce and really liked it. We had a slice of the chocolate cake for dessert which helped redeem the restaurant as far as I was concerned. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again, but the service was good and the staff members are very nice.

Went here for dinner on a Friday night (7:30ish)...walked in, no reservation needed. Super cute place, very clean, amazingly friendly staff, and EXCELLENT food. From the appetizer to dessert, it's some of the best food I've ever tasted. Goat Cheese Puffs (Breaded & golden fried croquettes with roasted peppers in balsamic butter) ***Mmmmmm, goat cheese*** Crusted Tilapia (Fresh fillet crusted with imported parmesan over mashed potato with grilled asparagus, finished with lemon caper sauce) ***The lemon caper sauce is PERFECT*** Steve's Chocolate Mousse cake *** A chocolate lovers DREAM*** So, if you're ever in Evanston and hungry, stop on in.

Since my original review, I didn't realize that it has been 7 years since I last reviewed this place! We have been back several times from just for date night and also for a family dinner. We typically find free parking in the residential section instead of paying meters but it's also walkable from the Central Metra stop, as well. My kids love it there with their yummy garlic bread (although my son told me that it was really butter and seaweed on the bread that made it taste so yummy) and their great children's menu. I love the options for side dishes and you actually get fresh fruit in a bowl and not just a cup. Their lentil soup is the perfect hearty starter for a meal and their portions are big enough to save for lunch the next day (even their skirt steak salad!) but my husband prefers their seafood where he had this delicious dinner special of a whitefish that was crusted with a hash brown mixture that was just delicious. He's also tried their salmon and tilapia and with great reviews, as well. Top off the night with an ice cream sundae or something decadent from their dessert menu (I'm a fan of anything a la mode) and if you're there with a family, grab an early dinner and then, work it out off in the park next to Symphony's.

While food isn't awful, for the money is should be better. I really wanted it like this place, so we gave it two tries and were even more disappointed the second time. Our waiter keep saying "That's cool" to everything (like when I just wanted water to drink, "Okay, that's cool."; when we asked for the check, "Yeah, that's cool."). Our appetizer and soup was pretty good, I was hopefully that our first experience was a fluke. When they brought out the entrees, I was given the wrong thing. The waiter let the kitchen know and the brought the correct dish after about four minutes... but it wasn't cooked all the way. The cheese on top wasn't even melted, so it was obviously undercooked even without taking a bite. I picked at it a bit and ended up just having a bit of my husband's meal. Both dishes were swimming in sauce, although the sauce was good on both.

Symphony is ok. The food is average. I had the Chicken Caesar with very sparse caesar dressing. My husband had the Steak Burger and that was just ok. They have a pretty nice wine list so I would recommend Symphony's for a nice drink at the bar with your girlfriend or date as the restaurant is really cute inside but I would skip the food here.

Though typically pretty good food today was poor at best. Two orders of Four Deuces - (eggs, pancakes, bacon and sausage) came to the table cold. the orders were sent back and instead of remaking they were tossed in the microwave (the triangle cut in my pancake still intact). The orders were still cold and now the pancakes are like rubber. I hope the owner and staff take note. There are other options. I'll go back to Walker Brothers where the kitchen cares about the product they serve.

Why is everyone so mean about Symphony? I love it there! The portions are huge, the place is nice and everyone's friendly. Geez, what do you want in an eggs'n'pancakes joint? A plate full of gold? I might go back here again next weekend just to spite all these awful Yelpers. The only slightly not-positive thing I will say is it's not ideal for kids. If you have one child or two very well-behaved kids, fine, but it's not a huge place with crayons and silly menu items. I happen to like that aspect, but different strokes maybe.

Used to go here regularly. The past 6 months (or longer) I have steered clear because the quality of food prep and service was going down hill. I went in a while ago (April?) for lunch on a weekday. It was very quiet but service was very slow and I had to go to the kitchen to ask my (female) server for a) my toast (which was then given to me toasted but cold) and b) then had to go back for condiments. I was pleasant but server seemed genuinely annoyed that I had the gall to come looking for these two fundamental (missing) parts of my order. No idea what happened here, last year morale and service seemed much higher.

I ordered breakfast to be delivered, through Grub Hub, and my experience was pleasant. I ordered eggs benedict, a short stack, and turkey sausage links. Their hollandaise sauce was tasty, some can be almost mayo like (yuck!). Also pleased they offer turkey based meats :) Delivery was quick, maybe a half hour. Definitely will be ordering again.

What happened to you Symphony's? Oh what happened? I remember the halcyon days when I bought every Groupon, every Amazon Local and every Living Social you put out. The food was amazing - my favorite fries, incredible BBQ pork sandwich and oh - oh the apple pie. But now you're not so consistent. Which I could put up with...really...if it weren't for the service. Oh god the service. It's now the one thing that you do consistently - bad service. The last time I ate there our waiter disappeared for 30 minutes. When he returned, we watched him walk in from outside the restaurant, take of his coat and come up to our table and ask in a giggly-voice if we'd been ok. Then the take-out. Here too the glow has faded! No cheese when we paid for cheese, food arrival 1 hour and 25 minutes after we placed our order, soggy fries, etc. etc. I long for our younger years Symphony's. But I fear they're gone forever.

The worst! went for brunch on a saturday and the place smelled like pee and one staff member was stumbling around wasted! i didnt even want to eat because of how drunk this person was. i could not stop watching as he used a mop to prop himself up in the wait station. i wanted to say something to a manger, but i really didnt want to be the one to get someone fired that was in such bad shape. this place was gross! oh yeah the drunk employee also had about a half a pound of dandruff/lint on the back of his black shirt, i lost my appetite. zero stars

I went here Thursday night for a Valentines Day dinner with my boyfriend. I ordered the ahi tuna. It was amazing! Our service wasn't too great but I let that slide for the excellent meal. I also took our server forever to bring my glass of wine. After we got home I was hit with a serious case of food poisoning. I should have used Yelp before going because less then a month someone else complained of this. I have never has food poisoning but it makes me never want to go back.

I just went to Symphony's cafe. I had a few friends coming with me and other than that, the restaurant was empty. I had ordered chocolate chip buttermilk pancakes in a short stack with whipped cream on top and bacon on the side. It took about and hour for my friends food to come out and it took my food about an 1 hour and a half. My bacon was grease logged, my pancakes had no chocolate chips, the whipped cream was on the side in a gravy boat, and worst of all, if I could squeeze my pancakes, there would be about 2 cups of grease. I was so hungry by the time my food came out so I ate almost all of it. We all ordered coffee and it took about an hour to come out and it was cold by then. After about 2 hours, everyone felt like throwing up. Only 1 person did. I will never go there again.

A more accurate review would be 2 1/2 stars or -3. Went for brunch and ordered both french toast and an omelete, both servicable and OK. I've had "coffee shop" or "Diner" food that was much better -- and cheaper. As for the reviews citing problems with the service, I found both the greeter and the server to be both excellent.

Went there for breakfast as part of our endless quest to find a good breakfast joint in Evanston. It was good - nothing spectacular. We would probably go back again for breakfast or to try lunch or dinner. It was clean and the service staff was good - aside from the slow refills on the delicious coffee. I think I will try the crepes next time. I had an omelet that was good. My husband got the eggs benedict which he reported was perfectly done. Overall it was a good experience and we will be returning.

After an extremely long day at work we decided to head down the street to take advantage of a Groupon that was expiring for Symphony. We've lived right down the block for almost a year and had yet to give it a try, so this was the perfect opportunity. It was a Wednesday night at 7:30 and the place was not crowded at all. As soon as we walked in the door we were greeted and told we could choose any seat we'd like. I started with a glass of wine which was delicious. They only serve beer and wine, which is really my only gripe with the place. After the day I had at work I would have loved a nice stiff drink, but the wine held me over nicely. We put in our appetizer order right away and were extremely excited when it came out. Fried calamari is always a favorite of ours and this was some of the best calamari I've had in a while. It was delicious. For our entrees I ordered the BBQ Pulled Pork and my S.O. ordered the Butternut Squash Ravioli... Everything was amazing. I don't know if they make their own BBQ sauce, but it was some of the best BBQ Sauce I've had. I will say that I'm a sucker for sweet BBQ Sauces, so the fact that it's made with a touch of honey made my mouth water more than John Candy in "The Great Outdoors" when they brought out "The Old 96er". My S.O. definitely enjoyed her Ravioli. She said it had a different taste than she was used to, but she liked it. Needless to say, we will definitely be back to Symphony's to try the other entrees they have to offer. The menu is quite robust and I can't wait to try more. The Groupon got us in the door, but the food and service will bring us back.

I'm amazed at some of the other reviews of Symphony's... How anyone could give them less than 5 stars is beyond me. We've been going to Symphony's for many years and never had a bad experience. We've gone as just a couple, small group of 4-5 and full family of 15 including all the grandkids. Each and every time it has been wonderful. Excellent food, huge portions, great service, reasonably priced for the quality and quantity of food. My favorite is the Chicken Genovese. Have tried other things which have all been good but this dish is just out of the world. Kind of scary, though it had been months since we'd been there, when we were there last night, our server remembered me and knew that was what I'd order! I find that once I've enjoyed the salad and bread, the dish is so big it easily makes at least 2 meals of leftovers for me. We were going to Symphony's long before Groupon/Living Social/Amazon local etc. existed and felt it was reasonably priced. Now whenever I see them pop up on the discount sites, I order the max number allowed. One of these days, we'll go back paying full price... Thank you, everyone at Symphony's, for being our absolute favorite restaurant!!

Always delicious food. Fancy brunch is the best. I just really love the menu here. It's a bit upscale but worth it! Everything is so sweet and delicious. Nice seating options, beautiful decor. Staff is always fast and friendly. I'll always bring friends here for brunch and a nice long chat.

This is a place I would really like to like... It's in a great location: a nice little enclave in NW Evanston with lots of nearby places to explore. I love the dawn-to-dusk set-up, too, with a combination of diner-type seating and a cozy little Euro-style bar in the corner of the west half of the restaurant. The profusion of windows adds lots of light, which is pleasant. Other tables, at the back of the east half, are rather shady, but I never sit there. OK, so what's the problem? In a word, service (or lack of). I was there recently with two other people, at lunchtime on a weekday. I understand that there might be a wait. However, don't bring me a $2.50 cup of coffee and make me wait 10 minutes for the cream! One of my dining companions was served his hamburger without mustard and ketchup. He also had to wait. The prices are a little high (for example, I would never spend $17.50 for a lunch "special"), but I am generally happy with the food. But on my last few visits, the service has just been clueless.

I really want to like this place, but it's so hard given the service level. I love the menu selection as you can order just about anything here. From breakfast to lunch to dinner to drinks. They have it covered. The service is painfully slow. If the ownership would train their servers and provide prompt service I would easily give another star.

I shared the fried calamari, ahi tuna salad, and taco salad here. The service was great, and the food was OK, but not for the price. We went on a Friday night. The calamari was a bit dark and overcooked and very salty. A dish that usually gets inhaled by my group was left to be vacuumed up by me, since I enjoy overly salty food. The ahi tuna salad was good. The texture was firm like I like it. I've had others that had soggy centers. Good especially if you love wasabi (which I don't, but this one was right there at the line. A little more and i wouldn't have been able to handle it). The taco salad is something that was strange on the menu. Do not know why we ordered it. The shell was greasy and there weren't a lot of veggies on it. There was too much ground beef. I'm still happy with it. I had a loud group in the small restaurant, and they put up with us graciously.

The lunch I had here was one of the most average dining experiences of my life! Food: average; service: average; price: average; atmosphere: a study in averageness! There's nothing wrong with Symphony but I won't be hurrying back.

The food was decent - nothing fancy but definitely good. I went with a large group and they have a good variety of things on the menu, which is nice. The atmosphere was nice but we had very slow service (30 minutes just to get drink orders in and served for 6 people). I would go back to see if maybe the service was better.

We've had really nice lunches (fabulous sandwiches & salads) here and got the best service, delicious fresh food and paying only a little more than we might at a more 'Mom & Pop' type family restaurant just a few miles west or south (one expects to pay a bit more for the great location - near a lot of nice stores, train station, not too far from the lake etc.). However, our first foray into the evening/dinner menu was not at all the same experience. Paying more than three times what a very nice lunch would normally cost, we both found ourselves feeling disappointed and underwhelmed. Portions were plentiful, but entrees and appetizers were overcooked and far too salty. Ravioli were impressive-looking, but several pillows were actually empty, the pasta was overcooked and found to be swimming in a pool of grease (oil? butter?), sprinkled with liberal quantities of cooked green herbs that looked appealing but didn't appear to lend any flavor to the dish. Summary: nice waitress/service, wine and ambience, portions plenty enough, but food overcooked, a little bland, and over-seasoned, and not at all good value. Will continue to go for lunch though.

I came here last week on a date and ordered the salmon zucca, which was recommended to me. I paired it with the mushroom soup. The wait wasn't very long and the soup was good. I'd say I was practically full after the soup though, since the bowl was so large. The salmon zucca was unlike anything I ever had before, and it was crusted with pumpkin seeds and other crunchy ingredients. It came with vegetables and sweet potatoes. The sweet potatoes weren't as great as expected but still good. The best part about this place was the ambiance. It's a very calm and quiet place on the corner of one of the friendly Central Street blocks.

Really wanted to like this place - and I think it's a good choice for breakfast with one condition, don't take the kids. The atmosphere is nice and subdued, not overly crowded, the menu is good as is the food, but if you're looking for a place to take the kids - this is not it. I was nervous the entire time that the boys were too loud and disruptive to other patrons and had a general nervous feeling just being there with them. So great alternative for adults, but not nearly loud and bustling enough to take a young family.

have been coming here with my family for years. great dining option on central street - their sun portobello gemelli is a great dish, if you're there for dinner. it's a nice brunch too - i had some delightful poached eggs, and liked that they let me get tomatoes instead of hash browns. usually pretty good service, too.

This review is for breakfast only. I truly do not understand why this place isn't busier on Saturday and Sunday morning, but I suppose everyone else's loss is my gain. The omelettes are up there with the best on the north shore - the vegetables always taste very fresh and the meat is of good quality. They have standard shredded hash browns as a side, which I much prefer to American fries. The coffee is good, and the servers are generally very attentive about offering refills. Definitely a hidden gem.

The only reason I gave 2 stars instead of 1 is because I really like some of the food...particularly the salads. I don't understand how this place stays in business. We were the only customers in the restaurant last night for about 30 minutes. The servers and bus staff were sitting around chatting. We had a brand new server who was getting trained by a server who was not setting any kind of great example. Their turnover is probably so high because they can't make money if there are no customers. Even though there were no other customers in the restaurant while we ordered, it still took over 20 minutes for a salad and kids ravioli. The service is slow and uncaring. I can justify the high price for the salads because it is enough for 2 meals for me. Otherwise, way too expensive for the pitiful service. I saw the owner in there one night and he was sitting in the 'bar' area on his laptop. He never once came into the area where people were dining. He doesn't seem to care and therefore neither do his employees. It all makes sense!! (except for how they pay their bills?!) Great location Pretty good food Horrible service

My boyfriend and I had brunch there the other day and was really impressed with the setting very classy and clean. This place even had some jazz music going to make the setting nice. I ordered the pancakes and sausage and my boyfriend had the egg white omlette with hash browns. My only issue is that the pancakes could have been more fluffier instead of thinned out and the sausages less greasy. My boyfriend loved his meal as well, but was not happy with the hash browns being way over done and tasted like bland potato chips. Our server Crystal was very polite and she was very prompt with our food and really made sure our meal was right. She's worth tipping well you don't get many servers who are polite and friendly and are willing to go that extra mile for a customer to make sure their orders are correct.

maybe 2.5. I have been there many times with my folks. They seem to like it. I find it just okay, but my experience has usually been only breakfast. I have had some good omeletes there, the hash browns are okay but a little greasy. They do make a really good bowl of oatmeal, served with brown sugar and raisins. My biggest problem is with the toast. All the times I have eaten there, the toast has never been hot. Or warm. Butter doesn't even pretend to melt. I've sent it back many times. And in a general way, shouldn't the toast be the last thing cooked, right before the order is up? Or is it a problem with the waitstaff, leaving things sit too long? But the eggs are usually warm enough. The service is hit and miss, generally okay. My kudos really go to the busboy, a friendly hispanic man who I think has been there a long time. He is usually really attentive, shows up often, and gets all the things a waiter would usually be responsible for asking us about. Decent food, so-so ambiance for me, generally okay service. I have yet to have been wowed. 2.5

On a Friday evening I ordered Eggplant Parmesan and a salad with ranch dressing. The food was average but its effect on me was anything but average. I woke up an hour later with a serious case of food poisoning. I don't know if it was the salad or the Eggplant but I assure you I will never eat here again. I called the restaurant a couple of days later after I recovered to inform them of my illness. When I asked for the manager I was told "he's not here." I assume employees are told to say that, probably because people call to complain so often. Do your stomach a favor and stay away from this place!

My friend & I both loved this place. Easy to park across the street on Prairie. Not too busy on a Thursday at 1pm. We both ordered the grilled calamari salad and iced tea, and this was seriously one of the best lunches I've had all year. Light, refreshing, but still incredibly tasty. The calamari was cooked perfectly - not too chewy - and you get SO MUCH food! I wish salad kept better so we could have eaten it again for dinner! Our waitress was lovely and the atmosphere is calming and welcoming. Such a great alternative to all the boring regular joints in downtown E-town (near campus). Definitely check this place out!

My love affair with Symphony has come to an end. We took another couple there tonight and it was really disappointing. My meal was actually gross and I did not eat any of it. Plus it was drowned in a butter sauce that was not indicated on the menu. My husband's meal was a little better, but not much. His vegetables in the grilled veggie risotto were overcooked and lacked any flavor. Maybe that is why they like to use the butter sauce...

I don't know whether I need to start doubting Evanston's ability to produce good eateries or just the opinions of the people convincing me to eat with them there. Evanston fail #2. We met up with our dining group on a Saturday afternoon. The place was busy enough, though not packed. The rest of our group had been already been waiting for several minutes. After our arrival, the server had to be tracked down just to get drink orders. Food orders took even longer. Maybe the Red Hat ladies dining at the table nearby scared off any service. Or our laughing toddler. I'm just not sure. Regardless, our server was absent for most of our meal. Nothing is particularly impressive here. I'm certain I looked at the menu for 10 minutes and had no "wow...mmmm" moments. I opted for the best sounding choice, the chicken Philly steak. There were huge pieces of chicken on a sandwich big enough to split or take 1/2 home for another meal. A fairly standard, and almost expected, take on the sandwich. It was decent, not memorable, except for the peppers and onions, key ingredients to a Philly, that were more than a bit lacking. No matter what the reason, I'm hesitant to make a return trip. It doesn't seem worth it. Save your pennies and head to the nearest [insert random restaurant name here].

We have been to Symphony's several times. Overall we have okay experiences, however the last two have taken a turn for the worse. Namely, the service has become unbearable. Today, we waited ten minutes for menus after being seated. Water was brought for the two of us, but not our son so we had ask for it when our waitress arrived at our table after about 15 minutes. First words, 'something to drink?' Not hello, or sorry for the wait. Not a good first impression. We received our food after a while, but then had to ask for silverware with which to eat it. Finally, after being there an hour, we received our check - as in dropped on our table without a word. I put my credit card in. 10 minutes later no sign of our waitress. She walked by and she said she would be right back. Walked by our table twice without picking it up. So after an hour and fifteen minutes, I actually had to walk up to the hostess to have my credit card charged. Ouch! I am aware that there are some good people working there (I mentioned that I had server envy with another section) but we will not return unless there is evidence that service has greatly improved.

Went here on a groupon last Sunday. Walked in and was excited. Restaurant was beautiful. Unfortunately, the decor is the only good thing about Symphony's. We ordered and it took over an hour to get our food. I ordered a skillet. It arrived lukewarm and mushy. It had absolutely no flavor, but at this point, I was starving so I ate it. Before I could even eat a third of it, I discovered a hair in my food. I told the waitress about it and she apologized in a manner that suggested she dealt with this all the time. She offered to get me something else. I just wanted to leave but I was starving so I asked for some hash browns. They arrived undercooked and only after another 25 minutes had passed. My boyfriend had a waffle and it too was undercooked. Also his sausage tasted off. All in all, it took nearly 2 hours for a horrible breakfast. On top of everything, half an hour after we left we were both sick to our stomachs! I will NEVER go here again!!!!

Small town American diner with just enough charm for the locals. I imagine its the go to for sunny Saturday errand runs, after little league ice cream and dinner with the grandparents. Cozy, familar and no surprises. The visit was to pass some with coffee and relax before an appointment. The only food be a creamy delicious white chocolate raspberry cheesecake. Smooth as can be! Food I saw and smelled seemed satisfying enough. And the staff was friendly and polite, even if a little forgetful on coffee refills. Was a nice treat to pass the time before an appointment and a busy relaxed Saturday afternoon.

To Yelp or not to Yelp? That is the question. To those of you who live on the North Shore and have experienced first hand the long lines one will experience going practically anywhere for breakfast or brunch on the weekend, I am sure you understand my dilemma. Should one be honest and talk about quality breakfast food with decent prices and good service? Or is it better to not review at all, keep this little place a secret AND keep the lines to a bare minimum as they are today?? Going against my better judgement, I will suggest that if you are stuck at Walker Brothers or The Lucky Platter or Clarkes etc, etc. head over to Symphony. You won't be disappointed

Went here for dinner last night after moving into the neighborhood, it was very quiet and more upscale than I was expecting. The menu was decent, though there were no thought-provoking dishes, multiple variations of salmon, tilapia and shrimp; filet mignon...I suppose the best example, is that spaghetti and meatballs is actually listed under the "Meat" section of the menu. The food was pretty good though. Entrees come with either soup or salad, and the cream of mushroom I had was hearty and well seasoned, clearly made from scratch. Jeff's salad was a salad, so no point-deduction there, but no points awarded either. For my entree, I had the Symphony Rotolo, a vegetarian pasta dish traditionally served with a tomato-based sauce. I wasn't in a tomato kind of mood, so they substituted a very rich, creamy gorgonzola sauce. The dish was tasty, the pasta cooked just right, and a really nice combination of textures. There was a slice of mozzarella cheese melted on top that didn't really need to be there, but hey, I won't say no to extra cheese. The dish was so rich though, I was only able to finish one of my two broccoli garnishes, and about a quarter of the rotolo. And I'm the kind of gal that likes to test my eating limits. Jeff ordered the filet mignon with bernaise, which came out medium rare (as ordered), and was evenly cooked throughout. It came with a nice lump of garlic mashed potatoes, and those were good, also made from scratch. Service was friendly, and I did notice that another party brought their own bottle of wine, so while they do have a decently priced wine list, BYOB is also accepted. S'alright, s'alright.

Miracle Whip. Ugh. Seriously, if this restaurant replaced the miracle whip with actual mayo, I'd bump it up a star. MW gives tuna salad a queer, sweet taste. It's just not right. Oh, they'd also have to change the cheese. A Kraft single does not a delicious tuna melt make. But you know, it's not all bad. The pasta salad was incredible, and I could tell that the tuna would have been really nice if it was actual mayo. And the bread was really enough to stand up to the tuna, which is always a plus when eating a tuna melt. I know I'd eat here again, but I also know that I'd think twice before I ordered something that comes standard with mayo. Which is sad, as I love such things, and I love mayo.

I'd eat here again, more like a 3.5 star meal. I had the BLT club - it was huge and well built. Really tasty. Garlic mashed potatoes as a side, which I found tasty enough. One companion had breakfast and she found it good enough and another had the tuna melt. Everyone enjoyed their meal and we all agreed if we happened to be in the area again we'd eat here again.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
