Can't say enough about John that works lunch time usually. I've been coming for years and every time I'm greeted by my first name which is awesome. He checks on me regularly and always is very cordial. I leave reviews from time to time and I do point out the bad but not one complaint with John. I'm not aware of either of the managers names...but with a personality like Johns, needs to be made one! Thanks for your service and see ya soon! - Brian V

Kids eat FREE on weekends! Food was good, our waitress was just alright. The atmosphere was terrible. I would've given it a 3 stars but we didn't enjoy the time as we were eating. All you hear Are the employees complaining a lot talking about how they want to just quit and leave. Employees snappy at each other. Cook yelling and complaining to other employees. From where we were sitting, about two customers got up and demanded and asked where food was. Waitress kept coming back returning food yelling it was wrong. Once I cashed out 1 customer ahead of me complained about the service. I also informed the mgr my experience. He acted like he cared. Than next thing you know 3 other customers heard and agreed with me and the lady ahead of me. that's when he decided to be manager. Manager didn't care at all. It's just a hot mess there! Manager doesn't even care how the employees are. Clearly you can hear the employees not happy with there job, taking it out on the customers, getting orders wrong and yet management let them voice there opinion with customers around. Insane!

I come here every so often and use a coupon. Its nice. Usually I am there during the day and the staff is pretty friendly and competent. Never got my order wrong. Food comes out fresh and hot. Shakes are wonderful. Never had a bad one. Just tried the breakfast last week. Everything was good. Could have been a bit more generous with the hash browns or offer them made with onions. But for $4.99 for 2 eggs, hash browns, bacon, bagel and coffee? Not so bad. Next time, I am going for the all you can eat pancakes. BIG PEOPLE: Some of the booths are stationary tables. Chairs are comfortable and the bench seats by the windows are ok.

Dinner! So, tonight was another first for me, my first ever visit to a Steak and Shake! How can this be? you may be asking, because as my Yelp Friends know I am quite active and I get around a lot.. And please get your minds out of the gutter because I don't mean that I get around a lot in that way.. Sheesh... Okay, so anyway, I was kind of excited about my 1st visit to Steak and Shake so I went in with a positive attitude.. And, as I looked over the menu I was trying to find the best looking burger that I could and I found this Bacon Double Steakburger and it was delivered to my table and my first bite I dripped grease/juice all over my work shirt.. Boy, are they gonna be pissed tomorrow or what?? So, all in all enjoyed this burger, I did. However, these new cheese/herb fries they are now offering pretty much sucked so I definitely won't be ordering those again! Okay, and No way was I going to leave this Steak and Shake without getting a Shake, and they are offering this new Birthday Cake Shake and I figured since it's my Birthday in 4 months I would give myself this early present.. Gotta say, I did love this Shake, especially the whipped cream on top... Now, honestly, did my first outing at Steak and Shake blow my socks off? Definitely not.. In fact, I recently reviewed a new place in Uptown which I loved so much more.. But, I'm glad that I finally checked this place out, but won't be in a hurry or go out of my way to return.. Because, it was Okay, nothing more, and there are definitely better places out there.. Birthday Cake Shake or Not....

Listen, when your Norweigen partner says, I want to go back to steak 'n shake, each time she comes to Chicago... you gotta say ok, there's something there. yes, there's something there for everyone. Breakfast, burgers, appertizers, shakes. I like to indulge in burgers once in a while, so I do the spicy burgers or sliders, I typically skip the shakes but when my girl's eyes roll to the back of her head as she sips the milkshake in delight... gotta give them credit. They do shakes right. The staff is so helpful, friendly and nice. I really hope they make more than minimum wage at this establishment since meals for two can easily be under $10! seriously. They hussle and bust their back to take care of you.... please don't tell me you're only going to leave 20% cause it's really not cool.

Really slow service, poor customer service, I was very disappointed. 1 young lady just walked around like she didn't know what to do. Some people waited so long just to get their order taken that they left without eating.

My complaint here is not about the food it's the employees. To be specify the manager or shift manager. He was completely rude and an overall jack ass. Ordering food the question of "does that complete you order?" After every item as if he wanted to rush us while there was no other waiting customers. Good was ready practically shoved it in my face. No hello or thank you even when I was being polite. I would rather drive twenty miles then to deal with someone who has misplaced anger or hates their job. If you don't like to work there quit or find another job.

Their shakes are always good (lots of choices) I love the shoe string french fries. Always hot and crispy. I ordered the double steak burger with bacon cheese and a chocolate banana shake. A great burger should always have crispy edges. I was actually pretty frustrated today. I've been to this location many times and it was really busy. Today wasn't that busy. The manager was working register. I was ordering carry out. It was about 10 to 15 mins before he took my order. He was spending too much time chatting and taking orders of people who came in after me. I ordered my food (which was prepared quickly and I left) The burger was fine just like it should be. Of course I realized the shake he gave me was just chocolate (not what I ordered). And, after a fast food (yeah right, fast, ha haa) wait time of about 30mins i was late getting back to work. Today this location gets 2.5 stars for mishandled service.

How can this place have a drive-thru? It was mostly empty and it took 20 minutes to get 5 mediocre burgers. We ordered 4 shakes afterwards and it took 15 minutes and the place was empty then. A friend came by and told us he was in earlier but they forgot to include half of his food so he was back to get it. And he said the manager took his order, and blew it. He told us everything there used to be better when there was a woman managing the place, but now with the new guy, things were falling apart.

Steak n steak is a good place to grab a bite late at night, however, this location has terrible service at all times. They have careless employees and the food doesn't always meet the standards. Fire the idiots or have better management!

Have been to this location three times (mainly as a result of it being next to Hone Depot) each time homing my experience will improve. Went again today and will never go again. My experience was as follows: SLOW! Slow to be seated, slow to take my order, and slow to bring out the food. Waited almost 40 mins for my food. I noticed another family at the restaurant ended up leaving before they got their food because they had been waiting so long. They were not even busy, just none of the staff were in any kind of a hurry. I commented to the cashier that the service had been really slow and she just laughed at me. LOUD! As in the waitresses. Fighting with each other over tables, dropping and breaking dishes, etc. The staff here is very unprofessional. The manager walked around but was very apathetic and showed no concern over how slow everybody was moving and did nothing to help. Very disappointed today. Food was cold and no good to top it off. I've always liked Steak and Shake, but I will not be trying this location again.

THE SERVICE FUCKING SUCKS. Sorry for my language. I'm sitting here watch all the servers (most are ignorant teens) chit chat amongst each other. No one bothered giving a menu until my boyfriend asked for it. 1. HAD TO SEAT OURSELVES! 2. NO SILVERWARE STILL. 3. GOT MY SHAKE WRONG TWICE. 4. NO WATER BROUGHT TO THE TABLE You guys need to get your act together. I've been here when there's a nice male Caucasian server that I really appreciate but tonight...was horrible. Worst service I've ever experienced in my life. Hire a new staff.

  • Michelle P.

Went in when the place was only at about half capacity but still had to wait in a line with about 10 other people. There were 4 different servers standing in the back and none of them even acknowledged all of us waiting in line. It was another 10 minutes before all of us were seated at the same time. Once we were seated it still took awhile to even get menus or speak to a waitress. The wait staff is terrible. I even saw a waitress take someone's shake away after she had only had a few sips. When the customer claimed she was still drinking it, the waitress attempted to give it back when garbage already stuffed on top of the shake. The whole place is sloppy, as if it was their first time being open with under qualified staff.

Steak 'n Shake is Steak 'n Shake but when you haven't been to one in nearly 10 years you can't help but be a bit excited. Shakes! Thin french fries! Delicious steak burgers! I chowed down to my heart's content

Good food at a good price! If you feel the need for fast food, eat here instead of McDonalds or Burger King. Unfortunately, this location seems to always be over crowded.

Generally this has always been a busy place. One out of 10 times there have been mistakes. But it is a fast food joint and I don't have high expectations. Today however, after placing my order every thing went smoothly. I received my California burger in a timely, while it was still hot, hardly had time to make a note in Yelp, had to write this after I arrived home. This Steak n Shake continues to be my go to place for good, hot fast food.

The menu seems to have shrunk a bit. More glaring, is the shrinkage of the 5 way chili plate. Specifically, the lack of chili and meat. It came out mostly as spaghetti, onions, beans, and red sauce. The portion was pretty small for the price. Stick with the burger and skinny fries. The shakes are still pretty darn good. A major complaint I have is the poor service. We arrived at 5 and there was one waitress and a trainee running the front. It wasn't until 5:30ish that the rest of the crew showed up. It took forever to get menus and water. Then the bill took forever. We had a two year old and an infant, so the wait was killing us. It's weird because I agree with the other review that the Rockford SnS is much much better all around.

Horrible Service! Went In Last Night With The Hubby & Was Seriously Treated Like Crap! Walked In & There Were Like 3 Tables Occupied. The Sign Says "Wait To Be Seated" But After 5 Minutes Of Waiting & Numerous Staff Walking Pass Us, We Sat Ourselves! So After We Sit At Our Lovely Table, We Waited, And Waited & Waited Some More. Finally, Someone Sees Us & Throws Some Menus On The Table! -_- Gesh, Thanks. I Already Knew What I Wanted, But I Had To Wait 5 Minutes Until This "Waitress" Came To Our Table To Take Our Order. We Order Our Food & My Husband Asked A Simple Question "How Do You Cook Your Burgers?" the Waitress Replied With A Sketchy Attitude "On The Grill??" And He Says "Of Course, But Are They Rare, Medium?" & Then She Rolls Her Eyes & She's All Like "All Of Our Burgers Are Well Done, That's The Policy!!" So, She Walks Away & All Of The "Waitresses" Kept Staring At Us, Making Me Really Uncomfortable! Our Food Finally Comes, & I Kid You Not Less Then 30 Seconds Later Some Chick Totally Not Our Waitress Comes & Gives Us Our Bill. Like Wtf?? I Felt That They Were Trying To Rush Me Out Becaue They Had A Problem With Us, For What Reason Idk?? Any who, So I Was So Pissed, I Asked The Waitress For A To Go Container She Brings It Like 5 Minutes Later. When She Brings It, I Ask Her If I Can Have A Foam Cup For My Milkshake, She Said OK. So I'm Waiting, And Waiting, And My Husband Gets Up Really Pissed With This Crappy Service. She Then Looks Over From By The Kitchen & Says "Did You Need Something!!" Yes Beotch, I Asked U For A Damn Cup To Pour My Milkshake In! She Then Roles Her Eyes & Said Something Under A Breath! She Finally Brings Me My Cup & I Pour My Shake And Got Out That Jam. I Cannot Stand When These Teenage Girls Think They Are The Sh*t Because Of Whatever Reason! And Whatever Problem They Had Should Have Been Addressed! I Will Not Be Coming Back To This Horrible Environment!!

This steak n shake is always busy. People come in here and complain about the service, but the managers work hard to keep staffed and morale positive. This is a family restaurant, please don't be rude, come in here and cuss up a storm. If they're packed table to table, dont expect that your food is going to be as quick as if there were only five tables full. HEADS UP they have drive through and take out too. I'm impressed with what they can do given the customer to worker ratio. Please talk to a manager before you storm out or write a bad review. Remember there are PEOPLE working here, and how you feel when someone lashes out at you in your workplace.

Last week I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich with French fries, plus a mint Oreo milkshake. Yummy! The price wasn't bad, either. I didn't have time to eat there and instead preferred to take my meal home and eat there. It's great they have the carry out option.

Nowadays I only go to steak and shake when I have a buy one get one free coupon for a shake (which are in ads that get sent to my house on a weekly basis, so I'm pretty much shaked out). Recently I went to this location and got a salted caramel pretzel shake and a birthday cake shake. They took longer than usual to make and I think the person that took my order was expecting someone else to make them and when they realized I had been sitting by the takeout counter for quite some time, the person went back to make them herself. The salted caramel pretzel shake was nasty. There are actual pretzel pieces in the shake and they are so soggy that the texture of them along with their grainy flavor was not appealing to me. The birthday cake shake was delicious, which I expected to be the case since I've had it before. However both shakes were poorly made in the sense that the cups were only half full. I took the lid off of both of them and saw that to compensate for the lack of shake that was present the worker filled the second half of each of the cups with whip cream. I brought the shakes back before walking out the door and they said they would make them properly. As it turns out all they did was take the lids off them and put vanilla ice cream on top of the missing sections of both shakes. In essence this took away from the flavor of each of them but by that point I was through with dealing with things after having to wait so long to get the shakes initially and then go back to have them fixed.

The manager of this date at 5 pm was completely rude to my mother and I. I like the food here; however the manager took our order and didn't send it through. When we were waiting for five minutes for the meal to go she asked "Have you order?" She then found our receipt. My mother asked if she forgot her order. She had the attitude to raise her voice and said" please wait for your order, thank you!" She wouldn't even apologize in any proper manner. The restaurant wasn't even crowded we were the only one waiting. Honestly she even have poor communication to her employees too. She gave the handed to one of them when he said" isn't the manager is the only one allow to do this." We couldn't get her name tag. Honestly she just ruined our experience there. She was impolite and had poor communication skills. Why did this woman gotten hired. Food is good Management is abysmal

The food is EXCELLENT!! Prices are really good for the kind of food you get. The wait time was almost nil. The reason for the three starts and not five, was because we had to witness major disrespect from a Manager to an employee. He was ok to the customers but he wasn't very respectful to his staff. He told a girl that he THOUGHT was working the grill to speed it up. She was on her way out to go home. He got so loud that people were looking over at him and she read him really good. Then SHE brought us our order as she was walking out the door. Naj the Manager needs to realize that people have feelings too Otherwise, the food was good, it was warm (not very hot), the shake was great, and the burgers was filling. I had the parm. cheese seasoned fries, and even cold they tasted good. I'll definitely be back to this Steak N Shake. Two people ate two burgers, two orders of fries and a milkshake for $12.83. It satisfied the dinner requirement.

I used to stop and Steak n' Shake only when roadtripping through southern Illinois, since there was none close to us. When I ate less healthy than I do now, I found their burgers to be better than the typical Mickey Ds & BK which I avoid at all costs. Now that there's a location near us, we go here fairly regularly. I have an eight-year-old, and while I don't let her eat Mickey D's or BK, I do treat her to Steak n' Shake on occasion. They have burgers, Chicago-style hotdogs, chicken fingers, etc., for kids, and even side salads which for us balance out the "junk." I love the Kids Eat Free on the weekends, and they have a decent grilled chicken salad, which is what I order most often. Every now and then I splurge on their onion rings, which are good, and their milkshakes are awesome, coming in a variety of flavors, and 1/2 price in the afternoon! Their sliders are good, too, and much, much better than White Castle, which you could not pay me to eat. The service in the dining room is usually good, and the drive-thru is convenient when we're on the go. What's best about this place is the frequent coupons we get in the mail or newspaper EVERY WEEK, to lower their already low prices. Makes it hard to pass up when again, the food is better than your typical fast food.

Time to put on your fat pants, kids. We're goin' to Steak N Shake! Any Steak N Shake is 5-star worthy in my book. I'm a sucker for a classic double with everything (just do it), fries and a cup of chili with cheese and onions. Cap it off with a vanilla shake and you have the fattiest, most delicious meal ever. I'm serious. What's also serious was how incredibly nice our server was to my table of two. Drink refills were prompt. Delivery of our to-go order was rapid. She even packaged up our fountain drinks into very large to-go drink containers so we'd have something to sip on during the drive home. Stellar service. I like it here.

The nourishing grease of the Frisco Melt will save your drunken ass from being sacrificed before the porcelain god, but don't think that rescue doesn't come at a price. And the trans-fat and high fructose corn syrup filled artery clogging diabeetus inducing ingredients ensure that it's a steep price indeed. Those years of life that were so graciously bestowed upon you in your dying moments will be ripped away from you in the end, because as the First Law of Thermodynamics requires, the total energy in an isolated system must remain the same. Give up a little of your future to survive today. Sometimes it's just a necessary trade. This is a game of life and death, and few play it quite as well as Steak N Shake.

I'd give a 1, maybe 1.5 for service. Went here last night for a birthday (the birthday person's choice, not mine), and it took about 5 minutes for someone to even acknowledge us and seat us. Some of the employees looked up at us... no one said so much as "hello." Once we were seated, it was ten minutes before anyone even said "We will be right with you." The food came out quickly once we were actually able to place an order, but it took just about as long to get our sodas. I like steak n shake, but I've been to this location several times, and I'd say that clearly the management is lacking. They need to get their s#*t together!

Once, when I was in college in Urbana, and really struggling financially, I decided to splurge on a breakfast at the local Steak n Shake. I scraped together what little money I had, walked over to the restaurant, and ordered an omelet. Sadly, I found an eggshell in my omelet, which was otherwise fantastic. On a whim, I filled out a "how did we do?" card that was on the table, mentioning the shell in my omelet. I fully expected the waiter to chuck the response card in the trash. A week or so later, I received a typed letter from a VP of the chain of restaurants, on quality, watermarked paper (if you're too young to know what I mean by that, I got a really fancy email that was brought to my house). He apologized for the error, told me that he had spoken to the manager of that restaurant (whose name was mentioned), and asked him to reinforce the need to control quality with his staff. Also, he enclosed over $50 worth of coupons for free food at Steak n Shake! For a destitute college student at the time, this was a really, really big deal. I've remained loyal to the brand since then, and thankfully, they've kept up the quality at every one of their stores I've visited. Tis location is always clean, and the service has always been tops. Furthermore, the have two milkshake happy hours a day, where you can get one of their excellent shakes for half price.

fries-nice portion less salt but no ketchup?!?! Strawberry and banana shake-almost a half cup and big pieces of fruits make it really difficult to drink with straw the bacon burger-it's ok. It was my first time trying steak n shake. hopefully next time shake will be a full cup.

Well this is my second day in a row I've been here and I will say only thing great is the shakes. They are very delicious. First time I was there I ordered the taco salad, didn't like it much but I ate it. Not enough meat or cheese and the lettuce was iceburg lettuce ugh. You can tell the taco salad is not one of their meals they care too much about. I ordered a cookies and cream milkshake, so delicious. Second time I order the orginal double n cheese steak burger and fries and the salt caramel n pretzel milkshake. The burger ok, the fries plain like you can peel and cut to make your own fries at home, milkshake again was so delicious as always. The service wasnt on point this time, we didnt get any water they serve when you sit at your table or get any nipkins. Although its quite the distance and that burgers and fries wasnt that great. I would still come here to enjoy their shakes because they are really delicious.

The burgers here taste better than other fast food places and the fries are good too. There was a slight mistake on a drive through order when they seemed to be training a new person, when I went inside the manager handled it quickly and very professionally. I was impressed. Good service like that makes an impression. Nice to see them doing brisk business during the small hours.

After midnight the service is terribly horrendous, you need alot of time and may spend alot of it waiting. For what? Hardly any customers and yet there is alot of wait time and no excuses. Day time it can be busy, drive thru is best and they usually remember everything so the experience is better than other places. I've been to other locations and say when you order a shake they may forget to give you a spoon or napkins. Things you assume any drive thru personnel should remember. I think this is the closest location to the city, so I've been here a few times. It's hit or miss depending on if they have enough staff or not. Being the change in economy it seems they have alot more staff so it could get better. Shooters? Mini burgers and are available with different sauce toppings including Frisco style. With cheese is best and off their dollar menu it's an affordable tasty option.

I stepped foot on the dull black and white tile flooring caked in dirt and after about 5 minutes of looking at all of the damage that a busy Sunday lunch rush left behind, my party and I were greeted by the host who asked us if we wanted a booth or a table. There were three of us total and we requested a table. An expression of discontentment quickly came and left the host's face. She informed us she would be right back, and thus we continued waiting. No big deal right? Except for the fact that there was no line- all other patrons ahead of us had been seated and no one else was waiting behind us. There were 3 tables that were clean and set, each could've very easily and comfortably fit us yet moments later our host returns and asks us if we're "sure" we wanted a table. I replied that we did indeed prefer a table to a booth, normally that would be the end of the conversation but our host was insistent that we take a booth- so far as to suggesting that she put a chair in between both seats to fashion some sort of make-shift table. Again we declined, this time with a little more conviction and redundantly informed her that we were set on sitting at a table. A normal table. We pointed out the three set tables and asked if one of these was okay. She nodded and sat us down at one of them. Not necessarily a process one wants to go through when hungry. I wish I could say that was the worst of it, but we wound up waiting about 45 minutes for our food, needless to say we all ordered burgers, and longer still did we wait for out shakes... Which were served in to-go cups because the regular glasses were apparently all dirty. The food wasn't bad- but unfortunately it wasn't enough to redeem the sorry visit as a whole. Seeing as how I live in the city, going to Steak n Shake is an inconvenient commute, but usually well worth the trek. After these slip-ups I'm less-than-anxious to make another trip any time soon.

STAY AWAY! Normally I love Steak n' Shake, but not this one. Service was horrible. Took us 20 minutes in the driver thru. Asked for my burger to have everything except mayo and it came with just ketchup and mustard. Fries are cold and there was no ketchup in the bag. Very bad experience.

I try to avoid eating fast food as much as I can (I usually try to cook as often as I can to 1) control what I eat, and 2) be able to save up a decent amount of money so I can justify eating out at nice restaurants as much as I do), but I see myself going to Steak N Shake a decent amount when I know I'm in the dreaded paper-writing/research mode (something I'll have to get used to as a grad student). 1) Steak N Shake is open 24 hours a day, which is great, but it means I convince myself to come out here from downtown Evanston way too often. It'd be much easier to justify no fast food if everything besides Burger King was closed at 3am. 2) Cheap cheap burgers. They have 4 $3.99 burger and fries meals. I don't like soda (or as your midwesterners call it: "pop"), so being able to order a "value" meal without soda is great. 3) Their fries. Shoestring fries are the absolute best. Sure they have higher grease:mass ratio than larger-cut fries, but that's what makes these so wonderful. 4) As a native Californian, I've never had a Steak N Shake around (I'm blessed with In-n-Outs everywhere), but I'm glad there's a decent chain of burgers out in Chicagoland that can at least beat the 'other guys' (like McDonalds and BK) while not breaking the bank (like 5 Guys).

My experience with Steak N Shake has always been excellent, previously. I used to always visit the location in Rockford whether it be grabbing a shake for the road at the Drive Thru, or sitting down for a burger, service has always been impeccable. Reading some reviews here about the poor service I don't feel as bad, realizing I was just given the same poor service everyone gets here. My server seemed to have big trouble with the English language for starters. I ordered a burger and must have said "Raw Onions" three times, but the deer in the headlights gaze from my server equated to grilled onions, which is the Default here. Sure, their shakes are incredible, and my Vanilla shake with a cherry on top was as I remembered: heavenly! Taking my bill to pay at the cashier's register, another customer and I waited several minutes to even be acknowledged. With piss poor service at this Steak N Shake I'd rather drive all the way to Rockford for my shake, served with a smile!

"TAKHOMASAK" "In sight it must be right" The Steak N Shakes of my childhood drives were filled with these slogans. Consequently, whenever I think of this corporation, these two phrases immediately pop into my head. Advertising done right, or repetitively. Either way, it worked! I think I ate enough of the hot dogs to turn into one. The steakburgers-with cheese were also a fav. Now, my artery clogging preference is the Frisco Burger. LOVE it. The shakes, oh the shakes. Luscious, delicious, and tasty. If you are a freak, the fries are good dipped in. No reason not to try the half and half shakes, they are pretty darn good too! I have to admit, I was pretty excited when I heard this location was opening. I only hit it once in awhile, coming back from the vet, home depot, etc. It is nice to have a place to reminisce!

There is a Steak 'n Shake on every corner where I grew up. I know that the food isn't great but it's good for fast food. So when I had a craving, we looked it up and saw that there was one in Evanston. Score! Eh, not so much. My frisco melt looked like something the cat dragged in and puked on. Bread barely toasted and wet with that sauce. Could barely finish it. Plus, our waiter didn't quite ever seem to understand what I was asking for. I was really patient at first. After all, it's not a 5 star restaurant, I can let some things slip. But we had to order my son's hamburger three times. They finally brought it out after I asked for a third time and each time he seemed surprised that I wanted one. Then we had to ask for everything else--napkins, silverware, the bill. In fact I had to ask for the bill twice and when it came it was wrong. But not even looking at the service, this place is gross. My feet stuck to the floor, the high chair we got was caked in crumbs and everything seemed really sticky. Far stickier than I normally get at Steak 'n Shake. Bad bad experience.

We have been here a couple of times unusually when heading to the Home Depot over there. This place was packed at 1:00 on a Saturday. We chose to sit at the counter as there were 2 parties of 10 that were in front of us. Getting service there was a little difficult as at first no one took our order, then we had 3. After that little issue, everything else was fine and the server very pleasant. Went with the double cheese with chili and onion rings. I say pass on the rings and go for the fries. Still tastes like when I was a kid.

I made the mistake of coming here to satisfy a sugar craving. Ordered the junior size coffee mocha shake. I have been shivering and tweaking like a damned junkie going through DT's ever since and its FOUR HOURS LATER. It was THAT sweet, thick and syrupy of a drink. And, I only drank about 3/4 of it! Can you imagine getting a large!! Damn you to hell Steak N Shake. Damn you and your freak of nature milkshakes.

Why isn't there a Steak 'N Shake in Chicago? WHY?! I was in the Evanston area and had a craving for their milkshakes. Of course, I couldn't just order a milkshake. I ordered the double-cheeseburger meal with shoestring fries AND a malted chocolate milkshake. Whoa. I waddled out of there a happy girl. The best part is that they are open 24 hours. Uh-oh...

Pretty good place - very clean, efficient service, and food is MUCH better than Wendy's. They have great deals under $4.00 - I ended up ordering a couple items off their $4.00 menu.

Some people have White Castle, some people have Taco Bell, some people even have 3 week old stale Doritos... but for me, my guilty pleasure has always been Steak and Shake. I'm not sure what drew me in at first, their mouth watering burgers, their extremely cheap prices, killer shoe string fries (add cheese... trust me!!), rockin chicken fingers, or maybe just because they have a catchy name. I know this sounds insane but I think they have to BEST chili in the world (meaning the canned kind don't go crazy on me). If I could eat here everyday I would. The menu has something for everyone and of course you can't pass up a shake. The perfect meal to cure a hangover and it won't break the bank. Though I only eat here maybe once a year now, I enjoy every mouthful. Even though the service varies (especially at this location), I'm never really dissatisfied. I love the classic decor too, it's very nostalgic. Did you know the franchise has been around since 1934 and started right her in Illinois? Check out their rich long history steaknshake.com/history.…

Do yourself a favor and never, ever come here on a weekend afternoon. They have a "kids eat for free" special, and it gets amazingly crowded. While you're at it, spend the extra time to go to the Steak N Shake on Touhy in Des Plaines. Here's why: I've been going to this location for a while, but things have seemed to have broken down in the past couple of years. I can actually remember the exact moment that I vowed to never come here again. It was a couple of months ago. 9pm on a Saturday night, me and some friends decided to eat at Steak N Shake. While walking to the door, we noticed one of the cooks outside, in full cook regalia, selling a bag of weed to some guy. That's right. A bag of weed (seemingly a dub). Anyway. The purchaser lifted the sack up to his nose, in front of us, in front of the Steak N Shake entrance, and smelled it, telling the cook it was, "that good shit." I kid you not. Well, for some reason or another, we decided to still go inside and be seated. We were shown to our table, and the floor was completely wet. Not just-mopped wet, but a pipe-just-burst-all-over-the-floor-and-no-one-minded-to-mop-it-up wet. So, we decided to pack it up and make the drive to Des Plaines. Yes, our group had that big of a craving for Frisco Melts. It seems like the only good experiences I've had at the Evanston Steak N Shake had been when I was drunk, and service/cleanliness wasn't an issue for me. So, if it's 1am, and you're drunk and craving a frisco melt and a bag of weed, then this Steak N Shake is the perfect fit.

Today was my first visit to Steak N Shake, and it will certainly not be my last. My only complaint is that there is no location in downtown Chicago. Evanston is kind of a trek for me and it is not a place that I find myself passing through very often. However, my buddy Phil convinced me that we should make the drive on a Saturday afternoon to help nurse our mutual hangovers. I got the classic Triple Steakburger, which was very delicious, along with fries. The fries are McDonaldsesque, but thinner and less greasy. I like them a lot. I also ordered a Chocolate Shake, which really hit the spot as well. Our server was very friendly, and you definitely can't beat their prices for a sit down meal. The best comparison that I can make with the burger is that I thought it tasted pretty similar to M Burger, which I absolutely love. I can't say that I'll make any more trips out to the burbs specifically to get Steak N Shake, but if I ever pass one on the road I will definitely stop in.

It's fast food that's good, hot, fresh, and the shakes are to die for. We just moved to Evanston and our house is basically around the corner from this place, which may be a bad thing. The drive thru service is on point, and, did I mention the shakes?? Repeat daily: I will not eat here more than 5x a year, lest I blow up into Jabba the Hut.

can't review the food, because we were never seated and consequently could not order. walked in, no one acknowledged us. some "cook" was burning something in the microwave....black smoke was coming out of the kitchen area, along with the smell of burning food. did not see anyone who looked like a manager, they all seemed to be teenagers, who were standing around waiting at the pickup window for their orders, bickering about busing some other waitress's table. finally someone came by and said it would be 10 minutes for a table. 15 minutes later, there were two empty tables, but no one was cleaning them off, even though there was a line out the door for seating. no one cleaned off the counter, or offered us the counter seating, even though there was a young man doing nothing at the cash register. a woman who was paying her check whispered to me as she walked by, "however long you have been waiting, it took us over an hour to get our food." my boyfriend, his son and i walked out and went to Portillos. we will NOT return. not clean. bad service in the front of the house, burning food in the back of the house, and not a manager in sight.

Okay. Anybody giving Steak and Shake a bad review because of their sloppy looking burger or their cold french fries needs to understand that it is FAST FOOD. Even my favorite fast food places end up disappointing me at some time or another but I understand that it is FAST FOOD. Prepared by teenagers what do you expect. All I know is I discovered their breakfast recently and the only thing I can say is WOW!!!!! The quality if not better than is equal to any IHOP, Le Peep or Clarke's in Chicago or Evanston. So I get 2 Scrambled egged, 4 strips of bacon, six silver dollar size hashbrowns and 2 buttermilk pancakes for only $5.35 with tax included. All I can say is that this Steak and Shake has the cheapest and best breakfast in at least a five mile radius. Don't believe me check it out.

Steak and shake has always had some pretty good burgers. Great bite for a great price. However I do miss when the meals used to come with 2 sides. I often find myself wishing I had more fries. Unfortunately this review is only about the Steak. I'm not a very big fan of shakes, in any case. So I couldn't really tell how good they are in comparison to any other place. For a cheap meal that's overall satisfying, you can't really go wrong with Steak & Shake.

I have so many good memories from late nights at Steak N Shake. This particular restaurant is open 24/7. The burgers/fries/onion rings are good, but the highlight is the shakes and malts. It's a chain restaurant but since it seems like there aren't that many around Chicago, I'll give this one the thumbs up.

Total artery-clogging grease palace. And not surprising, this is the closest of their white-colored grease palaces to the north side of Chicago. What did I do a few nights ago? I made a special late-night pilgrimage to this one(albeit just using the drive-thru), since I hadn't had gone to a SnS in forever. Not to mention, I really miss the easy access to SnS I had back when I used to go to Illinois State University, not to mention it was located in THE very town SnS got its start. Got a vanilla and banana side by side milkshake, and a Frisco Melt. Both were as real good as I remember them. And though the staff wasn't the most attentive, the guy who took my order saved me the embarrassing pain I would've made if I didn't had ordered the Frisco Melt the traditional way they've always prepared them. But I guess that's to be expected, if you're out of practice with going to Steak 'n Shake(like I was that night). Minus 1/2 star, since the guy who prepared my order forgot to gave me napkins, and I had to run inside the place to get some napkins to go. Finally, yay for the fact that 1/2 of a Frisco Melt went really well with watching an episode of Robot Chicken I'd taped off adult swim, while making the drive here! I still have a preference for going to their Rosemont location, but you certainly could do worse than going to this particular white-colored grease palace, if you suddenly have cravings for their food.

Every time I go to this steak and shake, I have a horrible experience. The first time I went the booths were not wiped down. While I was eating my food, I looked down and an army of ants were collecting crumbs on a piece of chicken that had fell on the floor from a customer before me that hadn't been swept up. The second time I went they calculated my bill wrong, and gave me change that we three dollars short. The third time I went, the server took forever to come and take our orders and did not bother to give us silverware and napkins. Overall horrible experience and service.

I love this place. I always go for the steak burgers and the patty melts are good too. They have half priced milkshakes and they are all very good. It is cheap to :)

My sandwich fell apart before I could eat it, my fries were cold and flavorless, and in the end everything was somehow more expensive than it said on the menu. In the end then I spent the rest of the afternoon being nauseous. Three stars for the interior and the huge shakes with cherries on top.

It was only my second time thru the drive thru but my first time getting something other than a shake. I had just been thru a particularly harrowing driving adventure looking for a Home Depot. Finding one 2 miles from home was awesome and then seeing a Steak and Shake in the same parking lot was awesomer! HD didnt have what I needed and I decided to treat myself to some fast food. I had a hamburger and fries and ate it on the way back home. It was really good! I dont know if I'd go out of my way for it but I love HomeDepot so I might make it a treat stop when I need to fix up the apartment! Next time I want a sundae shake!

I've stopped by this location a few times when out and about running errands in Evanston. I haven't really gone here when it was too crazy, as others have yelped. In my latest visit, I had the Western BBQ bacon cheeseburger - which I typically gravitate toward. I was really happy with it, and even happier that it comes with fries, unlike some other frilly burger joints. I like how they have the seasoning right on the table too. But I think what I especially like the most about this place is the milkshakes galore! This time around I got a mixed banana-chocolate milkshake which was very good (I've been on a milkshake fix lately). The service we had was very friendly, although I think our server could have checked in on us one more time.

Service inside the restaurant and at the drive thru is either a hit or miss. The inside of the restaurant doesn't look as neat and tidy as I would like. It really does depend on the server, but service can be slow. During Happy Hour 2-4pm on weekdays, it's half off for all shakes. Make sure to mention that while you order. I ordered two shakes at 2:03pm and when I paid full price for both at the window, the guy (he looked like the manager) said I should have mentioned it. It only costs me $3-4 bucks but it still makes me so angry. I mean.... if he is the manager.. shouldn't he set an example for good customer service? However, the food here is pretty good. I do like the steak burgers and the shakes... just don't expect good service.

I actually ate at a steak n shake in Gurnee tonight and it inspired me to write about my "usual" spot which is in evanston. Although this is NO WHERE near my house and is a complete journey n' a half, I highly enjoy eating here. The old style diner feel, with the white, red and black makes me hungry before I even get in the restaurant. I've dined in as well as gone through the drive-thru and both are great. I usually get the single with cheese platter...and onion rings as my second side. I love their fries, they are always crispy and thin, but not too thin, just perfect. Their shakes are yummy and will satisfy any hot day. I must agree with my fellow yelpers on the staff..it's a hit or miss for sure, sometimes I get a great server and sometimes I get rude people..but all in all, it hasn't stopped me from coming here! They are open 24/7 which is great for all you late night people who want a good burger. I'm pleased to see that there is a steak n shake on North Ave!? In old town!? OMG...

This place is okay. I'm not a big fan of steaks. Or Milkshakes. But my friends love the Fresco Melt; imagine grill cheese sandwich with hamburger patties and extra grease. I haven't had one yet. Although I don't like milkshakes, I get the strawberry frozen yogurt milkshake, which is lighter. The size is pretty good for the price too. I've never had a terrible experience here with the waitstaff. They are pretty nice. Can be a little slow though - can't figure out why, especially when there's only 3 tables full at 2AM... I only go during the late night hours, because this wouldn't be my first pick. (It's in the middle nowhere... there's a Home Depot and Petsmart in the same plaza and a MiniGolf place down the street) I guess that's another plus - it's open 24/7 so you can get your sweet tooth a treat at any time during the day. Or night.

I have been wanting to try a Steak N Shake for a mighty long time. Now that I work very close to one, I was chomping at the bit to try it out. A few of us decided to head over there for lunch. We all were interested in trying out the shooters but our server regretfully informed us that they were out of buns. Poor preparation on their part as the three of us were very disappointed. I just got a basic bacon burger combo with fries and a shake. The fries were very much to my liking as they are of the shoestring variety. The burger was nothing to write home about at all and was very uninspiring to me. About a week later, the wifey and I went through the drive through for a couple of milkshakes. I am thinking about submitting my gas receipt to Steak and Shake corporate to get reimbursed. Good Grief we waited in line an OUT OF CONTROL amount of time and there were only two cars in front of us! Everyone I have dealt with here has been super friendly but overall this place just does not do it for me. I can see myself coming here now and then to satisfy a crave but I can't see myself coming here on a regular basis.

I was so excited when I discovered we had a Steak N Shake near our house . We never had it and was super excited to finally try it. We decided to sit in and try the food. (I felt by it being oUr first time the drive through would have been a bit overwhelming). The place was like a flashback to the 1950's! It was kind of cute and we had a very nice waiter. I was suprised, I thought it was the type of place that you can place your order and sit anywhere. But, the young man showed us to our table and was very professional and polite. This made me even more excited to try the food because of the service. So, I order a normal size Cheeseburger with fries and a garden salad. My husband had a Double Cheeseburger, chili, and a soda. I was intrigued by how slim and small the fries were when we got our food. The burger was decent but, I've had better at other restaurants. I decided to go back (alone) to try their milkshakes. Everybody always seem to rave about that being the best thing to try from them. I actually was not that impressed. Or maybe I caught them on a bad day! I ordered a strawberry shake ( I love Strawberrries and I wanted this shake to taste like heaven) instead, it tasted kind of chalky and later I had a very bad case of diarrhea LOL :) ! I think Potbellies shakes are WAAAAAAYbetter than Steak -N-Shakes!! This is just my opinion! But I still gave them 3 stars for the great customer services!!

    (3)
  • jackie m.

they get three stars because the food is good (although Ive never had hot or warm fries at the least) The sliders with chipotle are divine. HOwever they are rather tiny for a dollar each, but thats not even my complaint. My complaint is about the guy at the drive thru window. OMG how rude can you be? He was rude when taking my order at the menu board and EXTREMELY rude at the window. When I asked for bbq sauce for my chicken strips he mumbled something under his breath and came back with sauce. I said thank you and didnt get so much as a whatever...Has anyone heard of customer service anymore?? I'm one of those customers that calls corporate (i call for excellent and terrible employees alike) If I had known window guy's name I wouldve called. If I don't give you attitude I dont see why youre giving me attitude.

My boyfriend and I have eaten here on two occassions being the second the night before. The service was not that great so this could be the last time we eat here. My waiter was not really attentive to detail in terms of having things we needed like ketchup and extra napkins. Not to mention people had kids running all over the place and it was 10 pm when most parents have their kids in bed not up running around an all night diner. I ordered a dinner to go and the waiter didnt even stand there long enough to listen and make sure the order is complete before submitting it. Then I noticed that employees are chatting too much and a couple walked in and was standing for about 2 minutes before they were acknowledged and seated. One employee was busy playing that game where you direct the claw to pick up things when he should have been working and not clowning on the clock. If employees are to take a break they need to do it and not be in view of customers seeing them joking around and doing things that could make someone think they're not doing their job. At the end of the meal I ordered a snickers shake and instead it was a butterfinger shake which was an indication that my waiter was not paying attention so his tip was pretty low since I usually tip anywhere between 5-10 for good service. Like a lot of posters here who came to this location at night I found that service is terrible after 10pm. I don't think I'll be patronizing this restaurant anymore and look at going to a different location at some future point. I was also turned off by the lack of attention their bathrooms get after a certain time of day. My burger that I ordered looked sloppily put together and my boyfriend's fries had crap on it and didnt look like chilli at all just beans and meat and they called it chilli. The cheese for my fries wasnt hot and was served cold which was unacceptable. Restaraunt service sucks in this day and age when you got people who can't even act professional and should be lucky to be working because there's a gang of unemployed people out there who would gladly have your job and make their paycheck do what it do.

after a day of shopping in suburbia, we wanted to grab some food and just didn't feel like chipotle or mcd, but the roommie had seen a steak and shake commercial and since we were in evanston it only made sense to go....she had a burger and fries and i got the chili cheese dog with fries. she absolutely loved her burger i just liked my hotdog and fries...however, if you happen to go to NW and you bring your wildcard then a 10% discount is yours. So our bill was only like 9 bux...score one for poor students! the food was solid and if im in the neighborhood then i'll def go by for cheap eats again!

It's Steak N Shake people. By definition I don't expect a whole lot of them. The service is hit or miss (I mean, untrained, unmotivated staff and high turn-around, what do you expect?) But if Lisa-Marie is still there, she's great! I've usually had great experiences here (including one time in 2002 that a cook and a waitress try to help us change a flat tire that happened in the parking lot!)

UPDATE! August 07! Went back here on a weeknight about 8:30. The staff was TERRIBLE! Everyone was just standing around talking...they'd try to avoid eye contact with the customers so they wouldn't have to do anything. Our silverware was dirty, we didn't get the chili until the food came, the food had been packed up to go she told us - so she had them take it out of the wrappers and put it on our plates. It was half cold and sloppy. Then when we were paying the girl said something about how they live on their tips...right when she handed me my credit card slip. Wow. Horrible experience! If you go maybe go on the weekends or go earlier in the day or early evening. That night shift is horrific. I grew up with Steak n' Shakes all my life. I'll admit it...I crave it but I've always had bad service and less-than-hot fries at locations in several states. So I went to this location with my boyfriend one night this past winter. We were two of maybe four people in the place. I swear I got better service here than I've gotten at 4 star restaurants. Everyone was so nice! The manager was super friendly! So we thought this must have been an anomaly. People can't be that nice at Steak n' Shake, come on. So we went back a few months later. This time with two young boys in tow and they are pretty crowded on a Friday night. And there we go again...great service! Our waitress even offered the boys free extra fries to take home if they finished their burgers for us. Holy moly! I thought I was in heaven. I mean really, a really tasty burger, good fries, delish shakes and then a waitress who CARES? WHA? Thank you oh Steak n' Shake on Oakton! You're delightful and put many other Steak n' Shakes around the country to shame.

Great for a late night, hot, freshly made burger. I like the Frisco melt 'cause it's so cheesy! The shakes are okay too. I like that it tasted like something I would make in my kitchen (but am too lazy to make).

Not exactly haute cuisine, but I have to admit that I love their Pepper Jack Melt and milkshakes. Service can be hit or miss, depending on which teenager is working, but tonight's service was quick and courteous. And, the manager even stopped by our table to ask how everything was. I had to tell him that everything was great, because it hit the spot!

Went in on a day that looked like it was busy, well it wasn't. There were plenty of tables only they had not been cleaned for a while, there was never a waiter there to seat us, another family went to look for their own seats and had to make the waiter clean the table, the other family told us to go to the other table right across from them but it also needed to be cleaned. They took 20 minutes to take our order then another hour and 20 minutes to get our order, which we did not stay for. Staff was just standing around talking and I noticed there was food by the kitchen that was ready to be taken out for about 30 minutes. Extremely bad experience, never will I go come to this location again. Plus there was a physical fight between two family members and the police was not called by the restaurant. An older woman was taken out trembling with fear, she had been sitting near the table were there was the fight.

In sight, it must be right! And it is. This is my mom's favorite place on the planet and I've been going here since I was a tyke. Does it get old? Never. Have I gotten older? Yep, though I don't drool or cry as much as I used to. Waah. I know, I know, it's a chain restaurant, but there's just something about their steak burgers and thin fries that makes them stand out from the rest. Add a shake or malt and blamo! -- you've got yourself a meal for about $10. I recommend getting a platter with your sandwich because you can add two of their side items for an extra couple bucks. The sides include everything from chili with onions and cheese to coleslaw or an extra order of fries. Whatever floats your boat, Gilligan! Steak 'n Shake truly is worth the trip to the outskirts of Chicago for a feel-good meal.

I love Steak N Shake for what it is. For milkshakes I love their banana shake with oreo pieces and even though it's not listed on the menu you can get a junior size for $2. and their frisco sauce tastes great on everything! but I especially like it on their patty melt.

Yeah, so it's lame to review a chain. But it's steak n shake and it actually exists in Evanston - although it's a drive (by the home depot). Such good honey mustard sauce, so little time. 5 stars, Steak N Shake, 5 stars.

Burgers

Burger or Hamburger is savored as the most desired fast food meal in the United States. A hamburger is basically a sandwich prepared by stuffing ground meat patty, generally beef, between two slices of a bun cut in half. Hamburger is also famous for its seasoning. Most popular condiments used in hamburgers in the United States are mustard, mayonnaise, and ketchup. Besides ground meat patty, hamburgers are also stuffed with lettuce, onions, tomato slices, pickles, and cheese.
