What's not to love? Cheeseburgers, Hot dogs, french fries and cheese sauce...yes...cheese sauce. This place is an Evanston staple. It's old (in a good way), urban in feel, nostalgic, and all around reliable (a word I really love). Took the kiddos here on a lovely summer day during my recent staycation. We all had a calling for cheeseburgers, so we ordered up the standard quarter pounder, and we were not disappointed. Burgers are proudly graced with real cheddar cheese at this joint. We could have upgraded to a double, but I think the size was just right, and my kiddos (always starving) satisfied their appetites. Everything was cooked just the way I like it. Burgers not overly pink. Their skinny fries are a new favorite for me--made thin and cooked crispy. Yep, we had to get more of that cheddar cheese sauce on the side. Take note, this place is tight with just counter space inside. I can only imagine how packed it must get after a game, because it's right by the football stadium. Oh, that probably explains all the sports memorabilia on the wall. Excellent customer service. The man behind the counter, I think he might have been the owner, took great pride in making sure we were well taken care of. A little pricey for a daily stop, but I do think it's a great value. Ding, ding, ding, I love that value factor! If you can snag a seat outside, that's a major bonus when the weather is worth it. Yes, there are lots of birds around looking for crumbs, but that makes the urban experience even that much better ;-) Sure, I'll be back!

1 stars because u have to submit a review. I called before I placed the order to make sure they could get the food there by 12:15. I explained that we only had 30 to eat. They said yes no problem. I got a text that the food was "on its way" and would be there by 12:01. The driver called at 12:40. When I told him how late it was and that we would not be able to eat the food he said, "O" - could care less. I order on Grubhub so I tipped while packing the order - $80 order with $20 tip. What a waste! Unfortunately, I don't know how the food is. I won't be taking a second chance.

It's a little dive next to Ryan Stadium. Peking is available but tight and tricky; Fairly fast service. I bought a Groupon but I was still asked for an extra $2 for tax which I never have to do with other Groupon but no biggie. I asked to sample the banana ice cream then saw a piece of hair in the vanilla ice cream which immediately turned me off. I brought it to their attention and they scooped it up right away BUT they should have taken the whole carton out. It's not the cleanest place but the people are nice but it does not excuse good and proper sanitation. They could definitely improve on cleaning up the place - they just might get more customers. They are in a prime location so it would behoove them to clean the place up a little. Sadly I won't be returning even thought my two teenage boys said the food was good.

I haven't been to Mustard's in at least 20 years...As hot dog stands with longevity go, this one has years of being a staple for Vienna products in Evanston. On a busy Saturday afternoon, it was crowded the line was long, the service was ok- but the heat was on in the cramped space. (74 outside/85 inside) The Hot Dog and Polish that were purchased were as good as you get anywhere- my complaint with Mustard's, , it was dirty- Seems like this place needs a good cleaning- the garbage cans by the outdoor seating were overflowing. The french fries seemed to be frozen as opposed to fresh cut. Cups of water were given with no hassle or complaints by the staff. Despite the some what dirty conditions, still a very popular place.

I have been here on many occasions, and the staff is friendly and fast. They get really busy often, and the inside space is basically a long hallways with bar stools and a tiny bar along the wall with some windows. They have outdoor seating, but if you have to sit inside due to weather, come at an off time (to avoid the lunch rush). If you hate crowds, don't even step foot near here during NU game days. Now the best part: the food. Their hot dogs are legit Chicago style dogs. Their burgers are kind of greasy, but very juicy. Their toppings are fresh and you get tons of them. You also get plenty of fries with your order. Most recently I used a Groupon for two double cheeseburgers, two hot dogs, two medium fries, and two medium drinks for $10. It was very worth it. Normally their prices aren't the cheapest, but it's a genuine Chicago grill experience.

Your classic "Chicago Dog Stand." Vienna beef, chili, tamales and burgers etc. Excellent choice for a pre or post game quick meal. Nothing like a Chicago Dog to quench your appetite. No ketchup!

I love trying random local dives when traveling with work. The atmosphere was exceptional, right next to Ryan Stadium/ NorthWestern Campus. The place was under manned with what seemed to be a relatively new cook the night I was there... I would go back and give it another shot. The Italian Beef Combo someone at my table ordered trumped my choice.... But a good overall experience.

nothin' fancy. just good burgers and fries! i'll be back

The service is terrible and the owner is rude. The food is over priced. The restaurant area is small and dirty. Couldn't pay with a credit card and then tried to pay with a $20. The owner then asked my friend if they had smaller bills because he didn't want to break the $20. Then was scolded by the owner for not asking for a receipt before paying. The absolute worst service I've ever encountered.

I have no idea how this place is getting five stars! It's an old establishment, and there can be a nostalgic feeling, but the food is definitely "meh." The hot dog was acceptable, but too pricey compared to other institutions. The fries were downright atrocious. Weak, limp, and definitely frozen. Nothing memorable here at all. Definitely will be taking my money elsewhere.

Great food with great people. It's a family business that's been running for over 40 years now. The owner is a super nice guy and loves Northwestern sports. I got a bratwurst with onions, cheese, sauerkraut, and mustard and boy was it good. I'll definitely be back.

This is a long standing hot dog joint in Evanston and for good reason. Easy place to miss due to its small size but it is definitely worth a trip inside. Great tasting hot dogs and fries.

Love this place has great great food everything is good , every time I'm in the area I have to grab some food from there .

This is a good solid if unremarkable hot dog stand. I like their Polish. The hot dogs are average. It isn't the cleanest place but the guys who work their are nice. I wouldn't travel a long distance to go there but I like it as a local joint.

Hot dogs were great, good flavor. Cheese fries are real melted cheddar cheese and the small is big enough to share.

Love this place. Great decor and location. Quality Chicago style food. Hot dogs and hamburgers are great!! The fries are always fresh and fantastic.

Ahh, I love that this place is so close to me! Have a hang over? This is the place to go!!! The cheese fries, burgers, or corn dogs you have to try!! And if you are having a craving for something cold, order up a chocolate milk shake, the amount that you receive for the price you pay is unbeatable!!! Love this place and will continue to get my burger/hotdog fix here!

Mustards is an Evanston icon. One cannot live in evanston and not have tried mustards at least once and chances are that if you tried it once, that time was not your last time. They make the simplest but best dogs in the city. Fresh fries are always a plus and personable staff is what tops it for me. It's a very welcoming environment and it's a great place to meet new people while waiting for your meal. Nothing more to say than to make sure you stop by if you are in town!

  • Matt M.

Great food but the service is so underwhelming as to detract from the taste. Had to remind the guy about 4 times what I wanted in the 10 minutes that I was there. The taste however was quite good I had a hotdog and a cheeseburger and they were both delicious and I would certainly eat them again. If your in a hurry or picky about cleanliness I'd stay away but otherwise if your just looking for some conveniently located greasy food this is your spot.

  • Brian A.

An Evanston institution. Whether you're here to watch Northwestern lose in football or lose in basketball, this is a MUST stop. Conveniently located just across the parking lot from Ryan Field and Welsh-Ryan arena, it is perfect for a pre game hot dog. 5 stars!

  • David H.

Great when you eat there; TERRIBLE AT DELIVERY! I've now ordered delivery four times and each time, the hot food is cold, the cold food is warm and the shakes are melted like milk. If you're going to do delivery, you need to invest in insulated shoulder bags to prevent this. If you can't spend a few hundred to get food delivered right, DO NOT DO DELIVERY! It will ruin the reputation of your restaurant. That said, the food is fabulous - if you go there and eat there.

  • Alicia E.

Really delicious food. My only issue is the amount of cheese that comes with the cheese fries. They just give you a small cup of cheese. (Cheese fries are my favorite.) They don't serve it like they do at other restaurants with the cheese poured all over the top of the fries. They use amazing cheese though, kind of like Merkts Cheddar that's melted, but I cannot tell if it is Merkts or some similar brand. The burgers and hot dogs are delicious, though and is a really nice portion size.

My go to place for a veggie burger! I usually order carry outs with onion rings and fries. They are quick and generous with portions. FYI, it's an easy going environment but not very spacious if you want to eat there.

I have never been their Evanston location so this review is based only upon their catering services but they were amazing! We recently got married at Ravenswood Event Center and had a pin up, picnic theme going on. We hired Mustard's for the "meat" of our meal and ourselves and our guests could not have been happier. Their hot dog cart is adorable and they served unlimited classic dogs as well as veggie dogs to our guests for several hours at a VERY reasonable price. My favorite part is that they hand dressed every dog to order so everyone could get exactly what they liked. Steve and Karen were great to deal with and their son (don't remember his name!) who worked our event was great as well. I would recommend them for any unconventional catering gig and can't wait to stop in their location sometime to have a bite and say hello. Thanks guys!

Normally, a pretty decent hot dog stand, during July 4 parade, in the midst of receiving tons of business from parade attendees, the owners decided to double the prices of all merchandise to exploit the large mass of hungry customers. Very dishonest, and classic price gouging. In contrast, other local businesses, such as the Subway, did great business at published prices. Shame on you Mustards!

    (1)
  • Jenny H.

Cheeseburgers and hot dogs! The extensive menu is just a ruse. For shame one me ordering a turkey burger! I was in town for the game and grabbed a bite prior to kick-off. The outdoor seating was taken, so we stayed inside and admired their wall of photos and other memorabilia. Occasionally, you'd see people come in and out just to say hi to the people behind the counter. I ended up getting a cheeseburger and fries. My burger was decent. Overall, Mustard's is a great choice for gameday food, if not a tradition for many.

This is my go-to place if I am attending a sporting event at Welsh-Ryan arena & need a quick bite to eat. No frills, tiny place serving up some TASTY hamburgers & authentic Chicago-style hotdogs (and they won't even give you a dirty look if you ask for ketchup on your hotdog). When it's warm out, you can catch these guys grilling outside. My favorite things from here are the hamburgers and fries. The fries are AMAZING. Crisp, golden, thin, always hot, not too greasy. Can you tell I love their fries? Although I always forget to request that they not add salt to mine - seem to be a little on the salty side for me. This place is quite literally is a little burger & hot dog stand/shack. There are no tables inside & instead there's a ledge along a sports memorabilia-covered wall lined with stools; so don't come here expecting to have a sit-down dinner experience. There are tables outside - but obviously, you're limited as to when that is an option. If you walk in, don't be discouraged when you see the line out the door; these guys can move & you'll get your food ridiculously fast. Despite the chaos in there right before games, the workers there are always friendly. I wish there was a little more space in between the stools and where the line forms to order food, as the space is really tight. However, I usually am not in there for long. I eat. I cross the street, and I'm ready to watch some NU sports. And you didn't hear this from me, but I've frequently seen people order food here & get it to go & sneak it into the stadium. Not really "legal" but this is a good option since Welsh-Ryan arena has a terrible food selection.

Had a #1 combo - hot dog, fries and drink. Pretty good, inexpensive food. Table outside was really wobbly and annoying. I asked to switch my Coke out for a Sprite (because the Coke tasted funny) and the cashier just dumped it out and used the same cup. I mean, come on, cups are pretty cheap.

When I've had a miserable [day/week/month] and need some culinary therapy, this type of food really hits the spot. Just serve it up to me greasy and unhealthy, mmm mmm mmm. Mustard's lies right on my route home, and has a few free parking spaces and outdoor seating. Plus I've been meaning to try their chocolate malt for over a year. Maybe not as good as it could have been, but it was a serviceable meal of polish and fries. I threw in some cole slaw this time, which was a waste of my 95 cents. The milkshake was pretty amateur. At that price, $2.94 plus tax, I was surprised to receive it in a tall 22-ounce cup. But it's thin, on both body and flavor, so you're really just getting a few ounces of extra milk. I'd rather they cut out some of the milk, kept the rest of the proportions the same, and served me a thicker, tastier 16-ounce milkshake. Plus there were some icy bits which made me think that the ice cream was old. A subpar malt is still worth drinking, but I'll have to put this one near the bottom of my list.

Not too long ago my dad and I made Monday Hot Dog day. We'd visit different hot dog joints that we read about, wanted to try, time honored places, and, those that came highly recommended. Unfortunately we never got around to Mustard's last stand before he died, but, my husband and I have kept the tradition alive..with a few alterations. It dawned on us this past weekend that we had yet to try Mustard's so we stopped for lunch on Saturday. There wasn't much of a wait which wasn't a surprise since school hasn't started yet, although I suspect it tends to get crowded once the school year starts up. And since it's right next to Ryan Field I imagine it's doubly crowded when NU plays at home. We got a regular hot dog, a slaw dog, a large order of fries, and, based on the recommendation of the nice lady in front of us, a malt. Everything was really good: the hot dog buns were nicely steamed, the regular dog came w/peppers, a pickle, celery salt (score!), tomato, onion, relish, and, mustard. The fries were perfection, just the way I like them: thin and super crispy. The malt was nice and thick and a good suggestion. Why 3 stars? I cannot in good conscience give high marks to a Chicago hot dog place that lists ketchup as a REGULAR condiment on a Chicago hot dog. That right there? That's sacrilege. No self respecting Chicago dawg lover over the age of 12 should be ordering ketchup on their hot dog, and it sure as hell shouldn't be a regular addition. Aside from that serious hot dog faux pas, I like Mustard's and think even my Dad would approve..minus the ketchup nonsense.

This place has a special charm about it. Really a big fan of this chicago style restaurant. So many places like this have sold out, but this place is pure. A diamond in the toilet full of poop that is chicago style restaurants. Must go to during a northwestern game. this is everything a place to get a dog should be.

  • Jonathan C.

Well its got a creative name regarding American History.... but its next to NU so they got to be smug and smart, right? The malts are damn good... order it extra thick. Everything else is just over priced hot dog stand stuff. Its a steal compared to the stadium next door though

Mustard's will always have a special place in my heart. I grew up in Evanston and lived within biking distance of Mustard's. When my first child was born, I walked from Evanston Hospital to Mustard's to get dogs and fries for my exhausted wife. I'll always associate good times and my childhood with this location. All that said, there are better burgers and dogs in Chicagoland. If I didn't associate Mustard's with my childhood, it would probably be a solid 3 stars. The last time I went, the dog didn't quite have the right "snap" that I like. I had to repeat my order to the guys behind the counter a bunch of times (and they still got it wrong). Nothing terrible, but nothing outstanding, either.

Mustard's catered a late night snack to our wedding venue, the Newberry Library. The owners, Steve and Karen, did an amazing job! They were very friendly to deal with throughout the entire planning process, and the hot dogs were delicious. They set up a hot dog cart with an umbrella in the lobby of the building, and offered all the condiments/fixings you could want. We received so many compliments from our guests on how much they loved the surprise snack of Chicago style hot dogs!

  • Ju L.

Passed by all the time and was entranced by the funny name. When I finally stopped in on a rainy day, it was meh. Hot dog was okay if not too soggy-- nothing special and not close to the best I've had. Fries hit the spot for most part but they were lukewarm, you don't get much for the price, and again, it was nothing special. I'm sure this place has got real clout in the hearts of frequenters of Northwestern's football stadium (and fans of NU athletics in general, as evidenced by the many autographed team photos on the wall). But judging on food alone, it was really not noteworthy.

  • Frank C.

Not my style of hot dog or fries. Its ok but this place is like any typical hot dog stand, nothing stands out. Sorry guys. Very friendly service though and definitly good after a Northwestern game. Frank Campeglia (The Food Club)

Want a double dog with fries then this is a great place. Fries are great and polish is exceptional.

Went there after a Northwestern game and wanted a jumbo dog and a pizza puff. The crazy old man yells at me and says. YOU NO GET JUMBO DOG ONLY REGULAR DOG! I them remind this nutbag that I also want a pizza puff.. his response is.. YOU NO GET PIZZA PUFF JUST REGULAR DOG! My response was.. FUCK OFF and I left. Truth is that if you want to order from a crazy old man and give him money then that's your call.. I'd rather eat out of the garbage!!

  • John D.

Again. My review is based on then & now. 1. I like the burgers alot as well as the cheese fries (ROCK solid). The hot dog is also solid eating as well. The dogs are made right and the celery salt is added perfectly (some places use WAY TOO MUCH celery salt). The menu is straight forward and easy to understand. 2. It can get tight at times (mainly because of its size) and there could be a wait (my experiences were not worse than any other local place). 3. As for listing ketchup as a condiment, I let that go in this case. Remember, this place might as well be on Northwestern's campus (since it's so close to the stadium). Most of those kids aren't from here so I can see both sides. I get our Chicago thing (no ketchup- I've never liked ketchup on my dogs, in fact put salsa on a dog if you want but not the "K" word) since most locals assume it as a no-no (after age 10-12). From a business perspective, I understand listing it (with kids so far from home) so students won't considering going elsewhere. A minor concession in my book. For me 4 1/2 out of 5.

Amazing cheese fries! Friendly and such a fun place to be around for game day!! The manager was super friendly! Thanks for the laughs!

  • Adam C.

I live nearby and have come to this place twice. I have to laugh at all the other reviewers who are aghast that a hot dog stand would dare put ketchup on their everything hot dog. How could they? Please. Order it how you want it. Both times we ate here, the burgers were delicious, albeit skinny. The fries are so-so and the shakes are pretty decent. My downgrade to 2 stars comes from the older guy who runs the cash register and gets the drinks. We went in here the other night and my wife ordered a large cheese fry and a root beer. I then ordered a burger special with fries. After we paid, he read our order to us again and we noticed he had changed my wife's large fries to a small and handed her a coke instead of a root beer. When she tried to correct him on the root beer, he acted like she had made the mistake and insinuated she had actually asked him for a coke. Um, no. I heard here say "root beer" very clearly. When she told him about the large fries, he said "I gave you the special. It comes with small fries." Ok. So we're telling you we ordered something different and you're telling us we're either wrong or you decided to change it for us? What customer service training did you get?

    (2)
  • Lisa H.

I've been going to Mustard's for years and their cheese burgers have not changed! Grilled to perfection with all the toppings, YUM! The fries are great too! It's a very small place, so I'd pass on eating inside unless you absolutely have to. Watch your knees when you sit at the cement tables outside. This place is great for when you're CRAVING a greasy burger!

  • Hannah E.

I love Mustard's, but like someone else said, I doubt it's appreciably different from or better than other hot dog stands around the city. But I live in Boulder, CO now, and what I wouldn't give sometimes for a Mustard's Polish with mustard and a pickle, fries, and a freshly made mint chip milkshake straight from the ice cream in the cooler! I have such great memories associated with this place - as a kid, during the Fourth of July Parade, collecting money from my dad to run across the street from our seats to get dogs for everyone in our parade-watching group - probably 9 or 10 hot dogs and fries and milkshakes. Then I would wobble carefully across the street with my loot, dodging floats and unicyclers and gymnasts to safely make it back to our blanket. My review isn't solely based on nostalgia, though. The food is actually awesome, and every time I go back on vacation and return to Mustard's, that is confirmed. Though I can't speak for the hamburgers, I've never had a hotdog or a Polish that wasn't fantastic - practically bubbling hot, dark and crisp on the outside and juicy and tender in the middle, with the bun cleaving to the meat and toppings everywhere. Their fries are also solid, and I've never had anyone try to give me the old fries in the bottom of the basket. They'll always throw those away and start a new batch. The milkshakes are a nice perk - pick any flavor of ice cream from the cooler and they'll make you a milkshake out of it. It's a great alternative for those smoking hot summer days when, if you get a cone, it's melted all over the sidewalk before your tongue even touches it.

  • Clare L.

I'm a sucker for a Chicago Dog and this is the closest place from my parents house to get a dog. It's not the best Chicago Dog i've had, but I'm a sucker for their cheese fries. Don't be disturbed by the cheese, its naturally nasty looking and that is the charm of it. My stomach can only handle the cheese fries once a year (if that) but it's worth it in my book!! I generally order to go and bring it home, but there isn't really seating inside. Tables outside if you're interested. Experience the cheese fries atleast once in your life at Mustards Last Stand.

A dump on there best...lots and lots of better hot dog places to eat in,.

  • Hillari H.

Just up the ways a bit from Northwestern's football stadium is this little fast food joint. Prices are a little more than most fast food places, but the food is good. Not a lot of elbow room inside; it gets very crowded during the warmer months, and there's not much seating on the outside. But it's a nice place to stop if and when you're up in north Evanston.

  • Walter F.

Its a good spot for a hot dog or a burger. I stop by a few times a year when I am in the area on business and it never fails to satisfy me. The guys who work there are awesome, they take care of you and never mess up a order. They have parking which is great seeing as how there is hardly any street parking, but this makes the place a bit smaller with less interior seating options, but im not complaning about that. One of the things I love about this place is that it accetps debit/credit cards. Not only do I get to eat some good food that reminds me of my childhood for somereason... lol, but I can also pay with my card with makes me perfect for me. I would say if you are in the area atleast give it a try, its not overpriced like other hot dog places in the area (hommers).

  • Alan R.

One of the better Chicago Style Delis. Part of the ambiance is that its basically in the Ryan Field Parking lot. I love that they list their specials all over the place so you can easily see what to order. They also have ice cream. A great place to stop before or after an NU game.

  • Scott H.

Quite simply one of Chicagoland's best cheeseburgers...PERIOD! I might be the only customer who's never actually had a hot dog here as I understand that they do those quite well too. This burger is one of the few I find myself craving on a warm summer evening. A friend who had just given birth at Evanston Hospital asked specifically for 'Mustard's' to be brought to her bedside! The vibe is fun too...you really wish you could hear hits of the 70's and 80's blaring from drive-thru quality speakers here a la your childhood roller rink, but sadly you'll usually only hear the audio of a Univision telenovella. That's OK, though. Sit outside at one of the tables to complete the experience as the food is best eaten as soon as it leaves the griddle.

    (4)
  • Robert M.

Ah, Mustard's Last Stand. A very short distance from Northwestern's Ryan Field, so it gets a lot of business on football days. The guys working the grills are very nice and love to chat. There is not much space inside the joint, so sit outside if it's not too windy. The walls inside are lined with framed magazines, praise from from reviewers, and sports equipment. The food is relatively cheap and very good.

  • Frank B.

Unlike most of these reviews, when I ordered a dog with "everything," I did get an actual Chicago dog, including tomatoes and celery salt, no ketchup. I can't explain why this happened, but perhaps the grumpy old men behind the counter sensed what I was after. Middle-of-the-road fare. It's a real Vienna beef dog with sport peppers, so it's not bad, but the toppings were lackluster. Even buried in celery salt, the tomatoes had almost no flavor at all. I'm typically not a fan of fries, and the fast-food-style thin-cuts here were no exception. Prices slightly above average (maybe 25 cents). There seem to be fewer Chicago dives this far north, so I imagine that this would be a go-to place for me in Evanston. Otherwise, it's just a particularly well-named hot dog stand. (So memorable a name, in fact, that an unrelated hot dog stand in in Boulder, Colorado uses it. See my list for other review.)

    (3)
  • Ben P.

The owner of this place must be out of his mind. Let's have a hot dog stand right outside of chicago, and on your 'everything' hot dog you put fucking KETCHUP on it, and then you go and spell it CATSUP!! AND you have to ask separately for tomatoes and celery salt. I'm not joking when I say this - I have NEVER seen a place in Chicagoland where everything on a hot dog means ketchup. This wouldn't be so bad if they didn't have Vienna Beef signs plastered all over the place with pictures of THE chicago hot dog!! Is this some sick joke? They're lucky they have the property next to Dyche Stadium or else they'd probably be out of business. Now to the food. Got a hot dog with the real toppings on it. A double cheeseburger and fries. Split with the gf not all for myself. Everything hit the spot but there wasn't anything special about it or bring us back unless in the neighborhood. Portillo's still officially the best dog in the city!

  • William F.

The PERFECT place to take boys after a ball game. Nothin but hot dogs and hamburgs. If you want ice gream, go to Homer's in Wilmette, but this is the place for some serious hot dogs. Sports theme from NU stadium next door. Only downside is that it is hard to squeeze in more than four or five teammates. You'd have to spill outdoors into the stadium parking lot, if your group is larger.

This place is great. The prices are reasonable, the food is good (excellent fries), and the service is friendly - exactly what you want from a local hot dog stand.

Pretty average dog place in terms of food, cost comparable to other Evanston dog places. Space is limited inside- just a bar along the the side right up against the line. Wait time wasn't too bad, but it is kind of a cold shack in the winter months. If you are at a game stop by, otherwise probably not worth the trip to this area of Central Street.

A hot dog stand has been a resident of this little hut ever since Hansel and Gretel's family moved out. Sorry, the forest has long been cut down to make way for the Wildcats that like to return ever so often to tailgate. Once in awhile the "Mustard" likes to take in on the road, Lisle's Hot Air Balloon Festival. When they do venture out beyond the safety of the towering Dyche, they actually do a better job in putting together a dog. If you are not lucky enough to catch them outside of their normal unkempt, drab, bored staff, narrow tunnel layout, menu sign challenged, generally disorganized, a visit better during the summer months location, too bad. They know how to make a great Chicago hot dog, most of the time you'll end up getting one. The rest of the menu, if you can decipher it, is worth taking a chance on. These are the good guys of grease and having desert, that's my stand.

Sketchy settings, but the polish dog is second to none. I've never had a better hot dog.

They use Vienna beef. Fried polish and fries is decent. The drink that comes with the "specials" is smaller than you see at most places these days...maybe normal sized and that's way I don't recognize it, 12 oz or so. Not enough room inside, not enough seating on the patio. Cheap too!

I will drive 45 minutes to grab a Mustard's Last Burger and cheese fries from Mustard's Last Stand. Let's be clear, this place is greasy goodness. They do not take credit cards which is rough (and costs them one star, it's really my only complaint), but the food is so incredibly amazing I'll put up with it. The cheese on the cheese fries isn't that gross boogery nacho cheese so many places use. This cheese is melted, clumpy cheddar cheese. Amazing. There's a distinct flavor to everything at Mustard's and it really elevates it above typical "hot dog stand food". I have never had their hot dogs so I cannot comment on that, however, the burgers are insanely good.

Its a shame, I was really looking forward to this place as I have a job right down the street for the next week. Hot dogs were cold, the cheese sauce was cold, and curdled and the sprite was soda water. I would have given this 1 star but the guys were nice and the beef wasnt too bad but the cheese on the beef ruined it.

Hot dog and fries here cost as much as a gyro plate at some other greasy stands. It serves its area, and makes a fair buck on the more affluent crowd that frequents the neighborhood. For regular guys like me, the price is exorbitant for what you get.

This review is based just on the Hot Dog since its always in the conversation of best dogs in the Chicago area If you read some of my ohter posts I am a hot dog enthusiest and have tried every dog around. I have to go back and try the burger. The place is very small and located right next to the Northwestern Football stadium. Hot Dog came on a unsteamed poppy seed bun. Vienna dog , Mustard, Relish, Onion, Pickle, Sport Pepper, Tomato, Celary salt. The dog had decent snap and good flavor. All around a solid dog. I would go back for sure if I am in the area and if you live near there I would frequent it often. The holdback on the stars is from the lack of a steamed bun.

The food at Mustard's Last Stand was alright, if a bit expensive for hot dog stand fare. The staff ranged from charmless to charming, and the space was clean except for one area that had been left filthy -- and I mean filthy -- by one completely clueless patron. The mess was so bad that I set about to clean it up when I got up to leave, and it took me two runs to the garbage can to get rid of it all. I filled my empty paper boat with fries that he had dropped on the floor and partially squished, and then I went back to pick up the eight zillion packets of salt that he had also tossed down there. This guy was a class act all the way. Had I noticed him making the mess to begin with, I would have told him to pick it up. Some people are unbelievably filthy and inconsiderate. What a dirtbag.

The food is good, but from my experience the service is terrible. I was there with my dad the other day and they had very little fries left. The guy asked if we wanted fries and my dad pointed out that there wouldn't be enough for two. My dad asked if he would make more and he just filled up two fries bags with the remaining cold fries. Sure enough the fries were awful and the bags were half empty. What a waste! The food is usually good other than slow service.

The food is just like any other hot dog stand, except more expensive. Watch out if there's a game going on. The place will be packed.

One of the few places you can still get a real Maxwell Polish--fried and then grilled. This place has been around forever, I still stop in for a quick bite whenever I'm in the area.

Mustard's has remained the same in price and quality for as long as I can recall, and I enjoy the atmosphere it presents with all of the NU memorabilia. The food is greasy and good, and is perfect to wash down with a few drinks before you go to a Northwestern football game. I'm so down with all that.

My husband says that Mustard's has been in existence for as long as he can remember. Every time we go into Mustards (which is EVERY FRIKIN' TIME we go to Chicago), the same guy is standing at the end of the counter. He also says the same thing - every time. About my husband..."I've been serving him since he was THIS (hand down to about knee height) TALL". He remembers everyone. Mustard's is everything that is GREAT about Chicago food. Its fast, fried and fantastic. I always have a #1, hot dog, no ketchup and peppers. For the Seattle-ites reading this: a real hot dog is a Vienna beef wiener in a poppy seed bun, lovingly adorned with mustard, onions, tomato slices, peppers and a pickle spear. A WHOLE PICKLE! The crowning glory is the liberal sprinkling of celery salt, the thought of which is making my mouth water as I write. The outdoor seating is so Evanston. The location, on Central street, near Northwestern, is what dreams of hot dogs are made of.

Great hot dog, based on the Chicago standard. They lose a star for allowing ketchup

There's something to be said for becoming an institution. Friends of mine who are North Shore natives say this place has been exactly the same since they were kids in the '70s. Classic little dive atmosphere where you are surrounded by pictures of Northwestern Univ. athletics teams. Only seats about a dozen on stools but alot more squeeze in here and the place can get seriously hopping. Its parking lots are contiguous with the NU football stadium. As a result, you can imagine during the fall when a home football game is being played, this place should be avoided due to the crowds I have to agree with the other reviewers that their dogs, although very tasty, are not markedly different than any other hot dogs you are going to get elsewhere. With all due respect to Justin, I am not sure I agree that prices are inflated. I just had two loaded Vienna Beefs and a large soda for $7.02. You decide for yourself if that seems like too much for a tasty dog. Worked fine for me

OK, Half you people are nuts, the other half are pretty much right on target. IF ANYONE HAS THE RECIPE TO THEIR CHEESE FRY SAUCE, OR KNOWS WHERE TO GET IT I'LL PAY MONEY! I'm not kidding, e-mail me! This place isn't as bad as half the reviewers have said. The food was ALWAYS greasy and great whenever I ate there. The big black dude that worked there was great, we'd jawbone the entire time my order was being prepared. It's not overpriced, and they'll make your particular dog however you ask them. Maybe some people went there on a bad day? EVERY time I went there, I got more than a heaping helping of whatever I ordered, and I'm a big guy who can throw back beefs an' dogs like nobodies business. I've been to more than any Chicagoans fair share of hot dog dives. This place takes the cake. There are many things I miss about the Chi-town are after being transplanted to the west coast. Along with Soldier Field, Heckys' ribs, Mustards is at the top of the list. So, does ANYBODY KNOW WHERE THEY GET THEIR CHEESE SAUCE OR HOW TO MAKE IT?! I havn't had it for soo long and crave it more and more as time goes by. Please e-mail me if you can. I reccommend this place to everyone that want's a good taste of Chicago!

Not just a clever name. Oh, wait. It is. I grew up down the street from Dyke Stadium (not Ryan Field) and us kids used to walk here for dogs on our way to the now-defunct Evanston Theatre. To be honest, I gave it four stars because its nostalgic for me. I doubt the greasey goods are any better or worse than other stands around the city.

A little local burger and hot dog place. It serves up what it promises, but nothing to write home about. The burgers are pretty standard frozen patties and the hot dogs are not really done in the standard Chicago way, no tomatoes or pickle. However it is a nice place to just stop into while in the North Evanston neighborhood to get some grub since not much is around. A little on the expensive side for burgers and dogs though. Also they only take cash.

For a hot dog-burger hole in the wall type places, Mustard's is top notch. The burgers are especially back-yard frill delicious. Fries are above average and crunchy. Dogs are above average. Other stuff are pretty good too (onion ring, polish sausage, fish, etc). Great place for a quick bite. Get the burger. Best for pick-up for 1 to 3 people groups, few seats.

Clean? No. Friendly Staff? Not really. Greasy? oh goodness yes. Bathroom? not really, and if you can hold it, don't even ask to use it. Really dated pictures on the wall? Check. Obscene amount of ice cream in your serving? Check. Fries? Delicious. Never, ever even TRY to go if there's an event at the stadium. Or a parade.

I visited Mustard's for the first time today ( a monday during a busy lunch hour). It was your typical hole in the wall hot dog joint, but with quick service, good dogs, fresh, hot fries and a super corny name! I don't think the place has been updated in... well... EVER, but its got charm.

This hot dog stand has been here at least 20 years. I make it a point to try to stop here every once in a while. Even though it is in Evanston it reminds me of a South side of Chgo. stand. A dog with everything from here hits the spot.

this is a perfect hot dog stand. perfect place to drop in for a quick fix....was a little surprised to find that they include ketchup in the toppings for "everything", considering how proud and adamant chicagoans are on the mustard only policy. the fries are just like mcdonalds fries, not really a bad thing but not really a great thing either. wouldnt u like to frequent a place with a name like 'mustard's last stand' though?

You go for the experience. Hot and cooked to order, the fries, hamburgers and hot dogs are terrific and part of Evanston's charm.

This place has been here since the 70's maybe earlier. Its a great hole in the wall hot dog joint that sits to one side of the main parking lot to Dyke Stadium ( when did they rename it Ryan Field ??) Home of the NU Wildcats. Typical Vienna Hot dogs with the steamed poppy seed buns , they make Chicago dogs the way they are supposed to be made , outdoor seating on cast concrete tables in the summertime, pretty basic , but a great dog !

So many people are talking about the hot dogs, but where Mustard's truly shines is their Polish Sausage. They start with a well-flavored Vienna Polish like you could get anywhere in Chicago, but the preparation is key. When you order, they toss it in the deep fryer to start. Then they pull it out and put it on the grill. It flames up. Get it with mustard and grilled onions and you'll never be satisfied with another Polish. It's cripsy and smoky tasting on the outside, moist and flavorful on the inside. Heaven. Trust me. You owe it to yourself to try this. I'll drive over an hour to get there and I don't mind.

Grubby lil' hotdog joint that has been in this location since at least the Carter administration. Food is good but not worthy of a pilgrimage. Pretty much obligatory if you're going to an NU sporting event, though.

Double cheese burgers are fabulous. Plus, I played the best prank on a friend at this location. I dropped a few french fries in his hooded sweatshirt and he couldn't figure out why the Hitchcock birds wouldn't leave him alone...

Best hot dog stand ever! :-) Mustard's has the best polish sausage sandwiches I've ever tasted! The fries are also the best...I love the bbq sauce for the fries, too. The service is always great, fast and friendly here!

This is a cool little hot dog stand that been here for a while. I tried it for the first time a couple of days ago, though. Their hot dogs were delicious and I am really glad that I stopped by.
