When I say this place is amazing....it is incredible! Got The Godfather, Sans Prosciuto because I'm a vegetarian! An it was just fab! Great little cafe, great service, great food!

Good food and I read like the people who work here. This place does neighborhood cafe right.

Hidden gem! It's in a weird location but worth making it over there. Tons of sandwich options and they're all delicious. And there's a bit of a market inside with unique or foreign products. I would love to buy all their artisanal chocolate bars!

I had the Reuben sandwich. It was delicious, fresh, and eclectic, especially with the touch of tomato chutney. I'll be back!

Decent place. not a good place to eat in. carry out is the call here. they have interesting soups. twists on traditional sandwiches. hyde park doesn't have a lot, so this place is needed. I'd like to see better things on the shelves. They seem conflicted between going local, and carrying things you can find everywhere. Beverages were cool. Nice variety of choices.

Looking for a good, low key, delicious quick breakfast place; this is the place. Not only are their breakfast good, they also have a clover machine (don't know what this, then you need to come in and see for your self). Coming from a former Starbucks employee for 3 years, they serve a good range of coffee and getting them on the clover makes it that much better (it's an upside down French press basically). As for the food: can't go wrong. Need to do a little shopping; you can do that while you wait for your food.

I had a salad. This salad was darn fresh! She cut the lettuce, red pepper, onion, chicken breast on the spot! Then looks like they made their own croutons and lemon vinaigrette! Perfect spot in the neighborhood!

So if you're the type that expects to feel welcomed or even that your business is appreciated, you can expect NOT to feel that at Z&H on 47th. Most days, you can walk in the store & up to the counter without being acknowledged or you could even encounter an old fashioned stare down with the sagging-pant cashier. There will be no "Good Morning! Welcome to Z&H, what can I get for you today?" On the other hand, I do frequent this location because it's conveniently close to home and I find cafe options to be creative and delicious... Even if they are doing me the favor to make it. That said if in the area, stop by, but I wouldn't go out if my way.

First time here, last time here. One word UNFRIENDLY employees. No thank you and no intial greeting. I was very disappointed. There was only one other customer than myself so there is no excuse for the indifference.

Love this place but the service and personality of the place have definitely fallen off. I walked and no one even says hello anymore. Staff seems unhappy to be there and that makes it disappointing...hoping it comes alive this summer. What made it great was the food and ppl. It was like cheers, they knew your name.

November is perfect sandwich and soup time, and Z& H (the name you'll need to keep an eye out for as you drive down 47th Street) is a great place to dabble in this combo lunch choice. Both the name and 47th Street sound a lot to me like New York, and this could be a little market on a side street in Manhattan. It's cozy and low key, with a creative and extensive menu and an easy laid back staff. Service is that hybrid self-service where you order at the counter, but they deliver it to the table. I love the soup and half sandwich choice ($8.50)because usually their 1/2 sandwich would be a whole one at my house. And that was certainly true of my choice of the Mae Wilson, which was luscious thin slabs of turkey, which hung off the sides, for fun side-nibbling, on meaty whole grain bread. Accompanying the turkey was bacon, chipotle mayo, romaine lettuce and guacamole. The soup du jour was a Lime Chicken Cilantro. Very simple with lots of veggies (I needed a special detector to find the chicken pieces) and nicely spicy. The list of soups for the week sounded great: Coconut Ginger Carrot, Pollo Tellini (whatever the heck that is,) Rustic Garlic, Sweet Potato and Chorizo. So clearly there's a creative chef behind that counter. Also, my neighbor's panini, which I had to check out, was accompanied by a salad of large white beans. Interesting alternate to the usual chips and a pickle. The walls are lined with little jars and packets of specialty food items like mustards, condiments and sweets. The case near the cashier holds some very attractive pastries like croissants, scones and muffins. So whether it's breakfast or lunch or an in-between snack, you can grab some great fresh edibles and a cup of coffee that is superb. You can even get that in a nice big wide ceramic cup if your lips have had enough of recyclable paper products. Z&H is definitely a Hyde Park gem.

I've walked past this place a million times... I'm glad I finally stopped. The food was delicious. I had the 1/2 sandwich & soup: MAHATMA-STRAMI panini & bowl of sweet potato w/ chirizo soup. Both were flavorful with great blends of flavors. Total was like $9. I didn't really look around too much but they seem to have a wide variety of drinks as well. The staff was extremely helpful and polite. I'll definitely being going back. I can't wait to try the other sandwiches and soups.

The customer service was deplorable. We waited over 45 minutes for our cold sandwich and an inedible salad for takeout.

The bottom line: I had a great, sophisticated sandwich and got to meet interesting staff* The pros: The sandwich selection is unique and has depth. The ingredients that went into my vegetarian sandwich were unusual (I can't recall specifically, but for instance I had what I thought was a Moroccan pesto as part of it). The staff were not the regular type I would envision in such a place, but quite knowledgeable and friendly. The cons: The place was intimidating. There were two things that led me to feel that way. First, the neighborhood. While being close to the university and to the Obama's private home, the actual street was not the nicest at all. Second, the overall feeling is that there is lack of order and the shelves seem industrial and empty - they are not really empty, but something about the decor makes you feel that way. I am sure there is a better way. Other than that, the prices are higher than I have seen for similar products elsewhere. *I have had better, but this place is definitely in the top 20%, so '5 star' it is.

Saw it on Check Please and my friend said she did too and wanted to try it out. It's spacier than I imagined. They are friendly and playful. I ordered the Lil' Smoky & O'Malley and Iced Latte. My friend had the Jamon Jamon and Iced Mocha. Lil' Smoky & O'Malley - I ordered this because the curry mayo and tomato chutney had me intrigued. I have to say that I thought it tasted "unique"......I probably would not order it again. Iced Latte - It was fine. My friend seemed to really enjoy her Jamon Jamon and she said the Iced Mocha would be something I would like. She also really enjoyed the cous cous that came with the sandwich. So, if I ever do return, I'll be sure to try the Iced Mocha and something else. It's a nice place to just sit and have lunch or chill with a laptop as there was a few tables doing that. Only thing was they had the fan on and it was a bit chilly.

Can someone in management please tell the portly male working in the kitchen to pull up his pants? During my most recent visit, I had the unpleasant experience of viewing 90% of his undergarments while eating my meal. A few of the other employees in the kitchen were not using gloves and looked sloppy. This place needs to instruct their employees on proper work appearance. Based on that, I won't be going back for the overpriced food.

There aren't many recent reviews of Z&H, so I figured I'd offer my take from a December 2013 visit. First let me say the three gentlemen behind the counter were very kind, efficient, and (most importantly) knowledgeable of the menu. They were talking as I arrived, but as soon as I walked in they promptly attended to my order; offering suggestions to help. I had a soy mocha and a pig on a pretzel panini. Admittedly the panini was....okay. It was better than paninis from other local shops; and certainly much better than the typical food options on 47th. However, it wasn't the best panini I've had as earlier reviews tend to indicate. For the price, it's worth it. The soy mocha was better than what I'd get at Starbucks, and I don't say that lightly. I nearly drove back to get another. The store and tables are cute. However, there is a "worn" look about the place. I'd like the owners/management to take some time sprucing the place up a bit so it can continue to thrive. Lord knows Hyde Park/Bronzeville needs this as an option.

Oh how I've missed Z&H and the countless afternoons spent stuffing my face with its wondrous sandwiches, from the pig in a pretzel to the old major, and even the times I'd just concoct my own mana sandwich fit for a ravenous beast -- or starving college student. Foolish aside: Two years ago, on a magnificent spring day, I walked from my cousin's high rise in the West Loop all the way to Z&H and back; the trip left me with bloodied heels and a giant blister on the bottom of my left foot. Fact: If you are going to walk 16-some miles in loafers, it better be for a damn good sandwich.

We used to go to this location all the time, maybe 20 times total, and I'm giving it three stars based on the numerous wonderful experiences we've had there IN THE PAST. Apparently they changed staff, because gone are the friendly, laid back and professional staff, and now they have people who have customer service skills that just suck by comparison. The worst thing to watch was when one employee tried to take break, and this woman who apparently is his boss basically totally broke him down and humiliated him in a 10-or-so minute long protracted tirade at high volume in front of all the customers. Imagine sipping your coffee and relaxing to this at high volume: "How the hell you think you can take a break when you got here an hour late! Huh!??! Tell me! I dare you to tell me!! You gettin on mah damn nerves!!! I ain't playin with you no more!! How you can stand there and tell me you want a break!!" Meanwhile the three customers in line aren't getting served and are just standing there with that "I'd rather be anywhere than here right now" look on their faces. So, five stars in 2010 - 1 star now = 3 stars in the hopes that some customer service training will fix the problem.

I was looking for a cool sandwich spot and thought I'd try Z&H out. Great decision. Although I have yet to have an item there that I didn't like, the "Don't Tell Tal" sandwich is easily my favorite. Fresh ingredients, drinks made to order and in the cooler, and a staff that can't be described any way other than "cool"... I see no reason not to eat here at least once a week.

I know you wanna do it... I know they want to do it too... out there on the deli floor... they can make sandwiches! The godfather was amazing (yes, I know that's a Detroit Grand Pubahs track, but DJ Godfather would have rocked it!). For those who have no clue what I'm going on about, I'll cut to the chase: Excellent staff - everyone was extremely nice Excellent food - my sandwich was great (the Godfather - prosciutto, mozzarella, basil, balsamic vinegar, field greens on French bread), as was the white bean rosemary soup I had (though the side was kind of dull - potato salad in a tiny plastic hospital-pill-cup-sized container). Price - perhaps a bit steep, but they are using really fresh, top-of-the-line ingredients This is a really nice place to treat yourself to every once-in-a-while, but it's definitely too pricey to be your every-day sammitch shop. I didn't get a chance to try the cafe drinks at all, but there was a little boy absolutely bawling like it was the end of the world because he knocked his hot chocolate off the table and wreaked havoc all over the floor, so it must have been pretty good. Next time I'm there I'll be sure to get something hot and sweet.

The BEST soda selection EVUHHHHH!!! Biked to Zaleski with some friends this summer and we all shared an arrangement of their sandwiches. While we were locking up and hydrating outside, one of the counter guys came out and gave us a menu to check out. I was surprised by how much space they have and the additional offerings they provide. Not only can you get a sandwich, but they have homemade sides, random cafe items, and a selective delicatessen. Quite a few people were in here just relaxing, reading a book, or using their laptop. We took a little break from riding while we enjoyed different sodas from Sprecher (Puma Cola is da bomb!). We had the Godfather, Durand Durand, and the 90 miles to Mousak. The Godfather was awesome, combination was really good. My friend ate most of the 90 miles and he loaded it with bbq sauce, cause he's a newb. I had a bite before he drowned it, I thought it was pretty solid. I thought the Durand Durand needed to let the pate rest, since it was pretty cold. The counter guys and the owner have a hilarious rapport with one another, which usually helps alleviate any nervousness you may have and make you totally at ease.

The staff was nice and worked quickly to get the food out. That said, I have been to many better delis. The sandwiches had very little meat and cheese but were flavored pretty well. Wouldn't go back unless I was in the neighborhood.

Not a place to trek out to Hyde Park, but review-worthy nonetheless for any broke University of Chicago student who needs to have a high guaranteed satisfaction to dollar spent ratio when choosing to spend, not to mention any University employees looking to get a breath of fresh air. The space is modern, conversation-friendly yet loud enough that if you were on an awkward first date a few moments of silence won't be a deal breaker. My only disappointment was that the breads were hidden out of sight somewhere in the kitchen--with their selection of pretzel, French, rye, flat bread, and whole wheat bread, you'd think they'd want to display their bounty. It was past lunch so I didn't try the sandwiches, but they have a wide, interesting selection ranging from the more basic Italian variety to unique Spanish combinations like the "Jamon Jamon" (Serrano ham, manchego cheese, quince paste, Dijon mustard, mixed greens, and tomato on French) and "Pollo del Mar" (lemon-dill tuna salad made with wild caught, low mercury tuna, manchego, and mixed greens grilled on whole wheat). You can also make your own. Pastries looked largely skip-able, but if you need an afternoon caffeine boost, the coffee bar people know what they're doing. My mocha was expertly crafted by a barista who really seemed a cut above her Starbucks peers--she actually mixed the espresso and chocolate before pouring in hot steamed milk instead of just squirting a bunch of chocolate syrup. She even presented it to me with the lid off to show off the latté design. Taste passed with flying colors--the only mocha I've had in quite some time where you can actually taste the coffee and feel a strong caffeine buzz very distinct from the sugar high you'd get from most places. Definitely will be back to try the food.

Love this place. Stopped in yesterday. Had to return for some fancy noodles and sausage today. The staff is very friendly. The food selection is high quality. Fancy noodles, special oils, spices, and sauces. They have a great deli case of cheeses, olives, and meats. The produce looked a little sad. In the back there are some nice juices. Like a way better mini-whole foods. WITH a coffee shop attached. Metropolis coffee. My boyfriend said that the sandwich menu looked amazing. He said that he hasn't coveted a sandwich that much in a long time. I guess that's a good thing?

Ordered "The Argonaut" for $7.25 which consists of hummus, feta, cucumber, shaved carrot, mixed greens and lemon vinaigrette on multi-grain wrap. The so- called lemon vinaigrette was so oily it seeped through the bread and the paper. The other 30% was pure, sour lemon juice rendering the whole thing inedible. Ruined the hummus, too. All that's left is some nice spinach and carrots. But why did I pay $8.00 for that? Awful, just awful. Coffee and lattes are fine.

I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!!!! Awesome sandwich selection, cozy market area, sexiest staff, top notch impromptu dancing, and good times all around. I want to go here to try every single thing they have to offer. Then start from the beginning again.

Z&H's coffee is hit or miss (they usually change their blends). Even when it is a hit, it isn't great. The service is never 'bad' but I also don't find it to be incredibly welcoming either. The worst part about Z&H is the smell that sticks to your clothes when you leave the cafe. I slowly began transitioning to Istria, but now that I've found Cafe 57th, I plan on going there(57th street). It's proven to be the best in both service and coffees from the three.

A worker at Z&H clarified the vegan-friendliness of their menu. So FYI- All bread is vegan except the challah bread. The vegetarian chilli is vegan There is soy milk, but it's not on the menu. There is usually one vegan side dish, but you have to ask. So this is definitely one of the better options for vegans in the Hyde Park area, but again, be aware that it's pricier than Jimmy John's for a sandwich!

I've been going to Z & H since they opened their original store on 47th. The staff has always made it a point to know their customers names and orders. The products sold there are well thought-out - Local, no high-fructose corn syrup and yummy! Their sandwiches are fantastic and their coffee is great too! It is always my first choice when meeting up with a friend for coffee or lunch on the south side. We've also used them for catering and it was a great experience! Highly recommend!!

Z&H turned me into a food snob even before I landed in Portland. Living in Chicago as a pauper grad student you don't get to do to much of the fancy schmancy eating in the Gold Coast much (or ever). Life is sustained on the quick greasy eats that the South side is notorious for: Harold's Chicken, Cholie's pizza and a fish dinner from J&J's. And that suited me just fine until I took a look around and saw how it made everyone who ate it unhealthy and obese. NOT OKAY. At Z&H, I learned the art of eating less in quantity but more in quality. The way I see it is I either pay with my cholesterol or with my cash. Choosing the latter, I eventually became a weekly regular at Z&H my last year of living in Hyde Park, my favorites being the Old Major on Pretzel and the Tuna on Croissant. Yummy goodness. I also had a little crush on one of the guys who worked there. I actually think he's one of the owners. He was just super friendly to me on my first visit and so I just stayed kinda sweet on him. In fact, everyone who works there excels in the typical substandard customer service of the South side. Put down the mild sauce-coated chicken wing and go to Z&H and treat yourself to some quality food!

So I used to work right around the block. The place is a bit cramped so eating inside isn't very enjoyable. Their coffee isn't as good as people rave about. Maybe it's great for Hyde Park - whose standards are a tad lower. Their sandwiches and soups are really good though. Very fresh ingredients and great combination.

It seems as though almost everything this place touches turns to gold. They coffee they carry is great (Intelligentsia)... it's one of not very many places in the city where you can get your coffee brewed in a clover (and they do it cheaper here than at the Intelligentsias on Randolph and Broadway). They also make delicious sandwiches... I especially love the breakfast sandwiches, where the eggs are cooked to the perfect texture, combined with an oven-roasted tomato, cheese and/or bacon, and all grilled on a croissant. All of the condiments they use (mayos, spreads, etc) are freshly made daily, and they pay utmost attention to the quality of their ingredients and assembly of their menu items. They also function as a market, where you can find lots of fancy crackers, nuts, juices, etc. I don't buy much of these things, but I really appreciate their cheese counter which puts to shame all of the local supermarkets. You can also buy good-quality baguettes, vegetables, eggs, etc. Overall, it's simply a great place to hang out for breakfast, lunch, a snack, etc. The staff are extremely friendly and enthusiastic about the food they make. It also, unlike many coffee/sandwich spots that may seem superficially similar, is not overrun by the laptop crowd. Most of the people there go there to meet up and socialize over some good food.

Some of the best sandwiches in Chicago! I obviously have my favorites (the Tenzing Norgay, the Godfather, the Mae Wilson), but I've never had a bad sandwich. Great selection of sodas and chips to complete your meal (or wait to see what your free side will be if you get your sandwich to eat there), plus delicious desserts. I've come to expect so much from their chocolate chip cookies that I get disappointed when they're not fresh from the oven! The grocery offerings can be expensive, but they're specialized and always great quality, and it's fun to browse. If you're not there for lunch, get coffee (they have a Clover!!) and a pastry and read your book. Maybe chat up the counter staff if they're not too busy, they're always animated and fun to talk to.

10:00 AM on a Saturday, no bagels, none of that delicious oatmeal I hoped for. A restaurant must pride itself in great service and great food, neither of which I got this morning-or many morning when I brace myself the unpredictability of Z & H. The service staff was distracted by something other than serving the customers present, not unlike other experiences I have had there. I asked for my order, which I saw sitting, wrapped and ready to go on the back counter. The reply: He had to take a call. Calls should be placed on hold to serve the customers, I believe. Yes Z & H to the rescue for those delicious products, however the pretentious and unpredictable experience for high prices is not my cup of tea.

Love it! Great neighborhood cafe and deli! Love the specialty spices, pastas, coffee, etc. I've only been here twice since I've discovered it a month ago after living in Kenwood for 6 months and it is terrific. It's made me more proud of my community. The Godfather is addicting! So this weekend, I will have to try something new...Can't wait to go back and by the Hyde Park Spice seasoning:) More cafes like this are needed in neighborhoods! Hope to see u there!

This place rocks. Whats even more interesting is the story/history behind the owners. I commend the owners on branching out to the south side and calling Hyde Park their home. The service is unmatched in hospitality, friendliness, and overall neighborhood charm. Great sandwiches, hard to find specialty items, homemade cheeses, oh and the lemon squares are to-die-for!

  • Lauren M.

This place has the classiness of an upscale cafe with the inviting atmosphere of a deli. Basically a mini Dean & Deluca without all the yuppies. You can't buy your groceries here, so I wouldn't call it a market, but all the fancy essentials like truffle oil or Vosges chocolate make it a modified upscale convenience store. At the same time, you don't feel intimidated to be there and the staff is nice and helpful. Classy without pretension. I ordered a sandwich that was fair, it was probably my fault for trying to melt swiss cheese, the bread was more substantial than I expected as well. But it tasted good and I think if I picked something off the menu I would've been in heaven. Pretty good coffee too. The point being if I were back in that neck of the woods, it would be my first choice.

Z & H to the rescue! I called them at 10:15 this morning to see if they could pull together sandwiches for 15-20 people by 11:20 today. The young lady I spoke with was not even phased by what I saw as a last-minute request and started helping me with my order. The last of the sandwiches were being put together when we arrived at 11:15 for the pick up and lunch was saved! The irony about this is that I had JUST been at Z & H about 30 minutes before I called about this - I was craving one of their b-fast sammies and coffee. I love, love LOVE this place!

Was here for lunch on Sunday! Had the "pig on a pretzel" sandwich and it was simply fantastic, The Ham, muenster cheese, honey mustard and dill pickles combined to be a very flavorful and savory eating experience. I also order a coffee that tasted wonderful and smooth even, I did not need to add any sugar and just had with a little cream. After eating I enjoyed a cream cheese and red velvet ice cream with my niece, home made ice cream from Chicago! For the road I bought a Bacon Chocolate bar, an interesting and tasty experience or as my friend says breakfast of champions! The Cafe has southern windows and is nice and warm with about 5 tables and a small grocery as well. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable. I would certainly come back in the future!

So now - I am happily married and I wouldn't want to freak any of these wonderful guys out BUT I would totally make out with Alex the cheese monger if circumstances were different......or at least court him every day of the week so that he could feed me on all his wonderful findings... I realize it's a little much for NOT freaking him out. And of course I am exaggerating. BUT I am totally in love with the cheese counter of Z & H. I went yesterday morning at around 9 to buy ammunitions (pumpkin carving can be pretty exhausting if you want my opinion) and was welcomed by a world of dairy wonders. Of course I wanted to give each them a try, and no - it was not too early in the morning to try a strong blue cheese from Spain... My cheese platter was exquisite, and totally arranged by Alex - my cheese superstar. If you want details about what I got - ask Erin P.; she kept the wrappings and the left-overs!

Read my review as being through the lens of someone who has U of C inspired Hyde Park eatery exhaustion, but after having eaten at Z&H at least a dozen times, I would say their food is pretty okay. Not great, but reliably okay. Their sandwiches are mostly pretty good, although it can be a ten minute wait if you are ordering food to go. They do have some pretty great soups though.

I never thought I'd say it . . . but man, folks in Kenwood have it good. My favorite thing is The Godfather, sans prosciutto. If I spend more than a minute thinking about it, my mouth starts to water and we're in a must-have-it-now situation. My second favorite thing is the real ginger ale. My third favorite thing is the selection of fancy chocolates and imported potato chips. My only gripe concerns the fruit salad. That fruit salad is weak! P.S. I just remembered my fourth favorite thing. I emailed Zaleski & Horvath to make sure their fresh mozzarella is pasteurized (it is), and the guy who responded had "Tim Schau, Shopkeep" for an email signature. Priceless!

By far the best dining option in Hyde Park! I particularly love the jamon jamon sandwich, the cheese counter, and the partially baked Labriola baguettes! I made some awesome ratatouille a couple weeks ago, and stopped by Z&H to grab some cheeses, partially baked baguette, and lettuce. I even got some wine recommendations out of the deal! What resulted was one of the best casual meals I've had with friends in a while. You guys are great. Keep up the good work.

After eating a couple of sandwiches here, there are two things which make Z&H shine. One, their prices. Two, the little thoughtful extras. I saw the reviews here on Yelp before I ever walked into Z&H, and I have to tell you Z&H is not what I expected. One of the first things I saw was a small package of dark bulgur, which is a staple in my house. I though "wow, I wonder what they manage to charge people for this," since dark bulgur is delicious and inexpensive but underappreciated. I flip over the container and (what!) it's $2.25 for a half pound. That's *totally* reasonable. Everything is a great deal here. Each of their sandwiches range in price between $6.50 and $7.50. Anyone who says that Zaleski and Horvath is expensive has apparently not had the pleasure I have had of paying $8 for shit at Panera. Or $6.50 for an average sandwich at Jimmy John's. (Sorry, I have an obsessive hate for Panera. At least at a place like Burger King you *know* you're getting crap. yelp.com/biz/panera-brea… ) The sandwiches are super. You know when you order a sandwich with lots of great ingredients? You think you know exactly what you're getting. Then when it comes out, it has those ingredients, but somehow it's SO much better than expected. That's what Z&H is like. These are not sandwiches that get all their flavor from dressings and fat. The best comparison I have for the sandwiches are Pastoral in the loop. I like Pastoral sandwiches a bit more, but I like the products Z&H sells more than the ones at Pastoral. And since I'm a big cook but not a big sandwich person, Z&H beats Pastoral. I took note of some products in particular. They have Yellingbo Australian olive oil, which I love. I tried a sample of this in Whole Foods several years ago, and then never saw it sold again. It's $3 cheaper here than it was at Whole Foods. Australia isn't exactly known for olive oil, but the taste of this is unique. It actually *tastes* like what you'd imagine Australia to taste like. Their tupelo honey from the Savannah Bee Company is $13. The same honey is $15 on the Savannah company website and also $15 the last time I checked at Pastoral. I know this because I ate all my roommate's honey when she was on vacation a few months ago. Just before she was scheduled to come home I rushed to replace it, learning for the first time it was gourmet honey. I was pissed, but it was great honey :) There are many little things I noticed like that. Point is, yes, these are expensive products, but the prices Z&H are charging for them are very competitive. Unlike the other reviewers, I wasn't totally wowed by the service. I've come in a few times, and as yet I haven't been offered any samples or offered any help. Of course, when I actually ask for samples or help, they're great, and they really know what they're talking about. But as far as Zaleski and Horvath being a friendly neighborhood place where everyone knows your name . . . I didn't get that impression at all. In fact, no one there has introduced him or herself or asked me my name, and no one ever says anything or greets me when I walk in. It isn't really a complaint - I just think the level of friendliness here is pretty average and is a bit overrated by the other reviewers. At least in my experience. But the knowledge with which they speak about each product when asked is awesome - I asked for help with the oils and vinegars, and was taught about all of them, and also given several suggestions about how to use them. I ended up buying some grapeseed oil for only $12, but will be back to try a vinegar that I was told is amazing. As far as the little extras are concerned, there's the amazing clover coffee and some amazing little pastries. My favorite is a single impulse buy while I was walking out the door once. Avocado stuffed with fresh crab meat. This was a fresh little avocado cup that was filled with a generous amount of crab and a smattering of flat leaf parsley, as well as some other seasoning. Oh my God. It was the best thing ever. Would you like to guess how much this piece of heaven cost me? $1.95. A definite recommendation if you live in Hyde Park and love to cook.

Pros: Great vegetarian options, best cinnamon raisin bagel I've had and a generally interesting place to have lunch in Hyde Park. Relatively easy parking. Cons: If you stay too long, you'll smell like smoked meat. My boyfriend wouldn't find this to be a con though.

ZOMG. Z&H is the greatest. And I feel lucky that it is in my neighborhood. What Z&H is: -A deli that delights. Their sandwiches are fantastic. I highly recommend any of the vegetarian options, the pig on a pretzel, and the little peccorino. Yu uhm. During my maternity leave, I swear I went every day (which is maybe why I haven't lost any baby weight?). -A coffee shop for true coffee lovers. They will fully tell you when you are about to order something that Starbucks has bastardized into a foofy-foofy, sugar-filled drink for everybody and their dog, which I appreciate because sometimes I like foofy foofy drinks that have been bastardized for everybody and their dog.....and sometimes I like coffee that makes me grow hair on my chest. -A specialty food store. You can find all sorts of fun chocolate, chips, snackies, and other fun cooking novelties here. They also have a small section of veggies in the back. What Z&H isn't: -A market. And they don't try to be either. They are great for gourmet specialty items and they don't try to be a gourmet market where you could do any real shopping. And we Hyde Parkers are about to get even luckier because Z & H is moving to 57th Street, the heart of Hyde Park, and will be even closer to my house......which may be slightly dangerous for any weight loss/money saving resolutions I had for 2010.

We must have gotten there as the lunch rush was just finishing up on Sunday because there was not a table or chair available for us! Thankfully, someone grabbed an extra round table from the back and set it up for us! We ordered the Hennessey and the Godfather and split them both. Each sandwich comes with a small side of potato salad which was a pretty good complement. I will say that I absolutely loved the Hennessey... we were a bit apprehensive on it at first but I vaguely remembered reading a few reviews on it and figured I'd try it out! I like cole slaw and pulled pork, just never thought of having it on a sandwich together. I'd go back for it in a heartbeat! The Godfather had very fresh ingredients but had a tad bit more balsamic that I would have liked, but it was still enjoyable nonetheless! Their service is superb and friendly but not obtrusive or pushy in any way. We got our sandwiches fairly quickly.

Hyde Park has it's own little Dean & Deluca! It's been about a year or so since they opened their doors and I am elated that they (seem to be) doing well! Terrific sandwiches, quality deli, prepared dishes, cheeses. Great artisan items to try there. Staff is knowledgable and super friendly....that goes a long way in today's anti-social world of commerce. Can't wait for 57th Street location to open....just a couple blocks away!!

Sweet Baby Jesus, thank you for bringing a delicious, fun, hip neighborhood place to the Bronzeville area. I went with a pal and we each enjoyed the salad & half sandwich special. I ordered the Bleu Moo: roast beef, bleu cheese, red onion, tomato, mixed greens, and mayo on French. She ordered the Lil' Smoky & O'Malley, a panini with smoked turkey, brie, curried mayo, tomato chutney, and romaine grilled on wheat. I liked mine better but her sandwich was also quite delish. We each had a drink (of the non-alcoholic variety, of course--it was noonish). We then ordered two lovely lattes and shared a slice of tasty lemon pound cake. This cost about $30. The service was very friendly and the place had a very mellow vibe. There were some students on laptops (free wi-fi!), some moms and kids, and also a couple of business people. A nice mixed crowd and everyone looked pretty darn content. I will definitely be back. There is a huge variety on the menu and I want to try everything! Check it out!

I came for a visit after seeing Z & H reviewed on "Check Please!" This is a unique deli with sandwiches (both hot or cold) for all tastes, from standard deli-fare to more inventive offerings. My boyfriend and I went to Z & H at around noon on a Sunday. Busy and bustling, but not overly crowded. You order and pay for your meal at the front, find a seat and after a few minutes your food will arrive at your table. There were all sorts of folks there: families there for lunch, students studying, friends catching up over coffee. It was an ecclectic mix of patrons. My boyfriend was excited to see they carried Mexican Coke (apparently it has sugar, rather than artificial sweetener) and they carry a wide range of other unique beverages. (I drank coffee, which was good.) There's also a pantry section with up-scale (and often international) specialty items (toffee, pasta, spices, etc) for those who aren't looking to have a sandwich. Z & H was a great reason for us to head down to Hyde Park. As a resident of Uptown, I don't get there often. You should make the trip, even if you live close-by.

Best sandwiches in Hyde Park. This is one of the few places where the ingredients are so good that they can do all the work. That is, you can make your own sandwich, fill it with stuff that sounds good - all the while giving little thought to how they will combine - and the result will be delicious. It goes without saying that all of the Z&H designed sandwiches are also fantastic. Buy a scone for the road, you won't regret it.

I've only been here once so far, but once is enough to know: JACKPOT. The friendly staff happily veganized my sandwich, which moved me to distraction with its mouthgasm-inducing texture and flavor. Also, the side salad (wheatberry and cranberry and some kind of tangy/sweet vinaigrette) was excellent. I left full and licking my lips to savor the lingering tastes of the meal. It's small and a little crowded, so don't come here expecting to have intimate conversation over your food. You shouldn't be talking while you eat this anyways, unless it's to moan, "Oh my god, this bread is sooooo soooft!" My cheese-phile friends tell me this is also the place to go for badass mind-blowingly tasty cheeses that cost more than a book store splurge per wedge. They certainly have selection, though as a dirty hippie vegan I cannot vouch for the flavor.

Can't tell you how glad I am to have a place like this in my neck of the woods. I use it more as a grocery store than a sandwich or coffee shop. Friendly staff, nice selection of unique & everyday items. Great to have owners that not only care about every thing that is on their shelves, but also in the store almost every hour they are open. Top notch guys, can't wait for store #2.

Chicken cilantro lime. OMG. So good. I also love the Daley Dip and Little Pecorino. Love the staff, very friendly and funny, and they remember your name! The lattes are also delicious.

I was devastated when this place took over the University Market - which had one of the best sandwich counters *ever*. Z&H's sandwiches are pretty good, though you pay for the quality ingredients they serve. The market items are nice too, though overpriced compared to other businesses that sell the same things. The espresso is very good, and they definitely got me hooked on drinking my straight espresso with a single small cube of aged Gouda!

Z&H gets my vote. Not only do they know me by name (and yes, I've been receiving the 10 dollar discount on $100 spent more than once...), but their sandwiches are bar none, in Hyde Park, and probably the rest of Chicago. They do many other excellent things too, such as the chocolate chip cookies, the salads, the coffees, etc, etc. You can also buy hard to get local, regional and European fine foods. It can be a bit hectic at times, in particular during lunch hours, but, gee, it's well worth it, not only because you won't get any better in Hyde Park, but because you won't get as good anywhere else either.

I'm on a mission. I call it the "1200 South" mission, as in surely there must be delicious eateries with no Blue, Brown or Northbound Red Line in sight. It might be that the youngsters I work with live in the deep heart of the numbered streets. . . and in my never-ending quest to be empathic, I want to see it for myself. Obviously going to Zaleski and Horvath is not a pioneering expedition. Safely located on the eastern edge of Hyde Park/Kenwood, it's palatable for sure. But baby steps. . . I'm not sure if there were bells on the door announcing my arrival, but there should have been. In fact the doors should have been swinging and saloony because it felt like I was on vacation in an undiscovered resort town. I wanted benches out front, an iconic statue of a carousel horse with faded paint and bikes strewn about. What Z&H lacked in visible kitsch it made up for it overflowing charm. What a gem. Not too much seating space, but freckled with young parents and U of C students. The staff is quietly sweet, smiling and engaging in the decision of which fine meat to put on what fresh bread. The ingredients are so obviously coveted by the owners. I made my own sandwich: smoked turkey, salami, baby greens, chipotle mayo and gouda on a pretzel bun. And oh, toast that shit. I was getting my order to go, and while it was being made with TLC, I browsed the gourmet wares. I am such a sucker for trifles and sundries, hard-to-find or never-seen goodies. I bought two jars of gourmet peanut butter (chocolate chip cookie dough peanut butter. . . *squeal*), instant steel cut oatmeal and a few other sweet odds and ends. Needless to say, I walked out of Z&H spending more than I had in mind, but I was happy to do it. The quality is there, and this neighborhood gem needs to be around for a long while. I'm already planning the day where it's a prelude to a spontaneous picnic on the beach.

I love places like this! Not really a restaurant in the traditional since and also not a traditional grocery store either. You'll find a few tables at the windows on either side of the entry door, a small shop with a good mix of items on the specialty side and their deli counter of meats, cheeses and quick menu items. You can have a great sandwich, salad or soup and pick up some provisions to bring home. Staff was friend as can be, everyone behind the counter said hello and offered a sample of this or that. I was interested in one of their turkey sandwiches that had tomato chutney on it. Hmm...tomato chutney? What is it I asked, so they gave me a taste. Never knew I liked tomato chutney, score give me one of those. My husband ordered the fishy salad, a salad I guess with salmon on it. Or to someone that doesn't eat fish, it seemed fishy to me. I also bought some cola called Gus, no HFCS instead cane sugar and cola nut extract, okay it was 2 bucks but I have to cut down on soda anyhow, so having it cost more will help me do that, and it tasting knock out good will make it special when I do decide to be a bad girl. Gus stands for Grown Up Soda, drinkgus.com We enjoyed talking to the guy behind the counter, when he asked if we had been there before and we said no, however that we'll be back more often because we're moving not to far he became very enthusiastic and told us he lived not to far away and gave us quite a few tips on the area. I know Aurore L., said she wanted to be the first to review this place but missed out, at least I hope it's a consolation that it was her review that caught my eye to check this place out. I'm glad we'll soon be close by, however even if your not it's worth the trip.

Z&H is a really cute deli/mini organic grocery/coffee shop located in an unassuming location in Hyde Park/Kenwood. I had driven past this place for months on the way to work at U of C without even realizing it was there! Then a co-worker brought in scones from Z&H which was super yummy and told me about this place. Naturally, my curiosity brought me to investigate on yelp. Good reviews, close to work... had to give it a try. The sandwiches are really good! A lil pricey, but tasty. The 'lil smokey with turkey and some type of curried spread is really good. Also I like the eggplant sandwich. The staff is really nice as well. They keep track of your purchases in their computer system (instead of a frequent buyer card) and offer incentives when you've spent a certain amount (can't remember how much). The coffee is also decent. The grocer section has a bunch of organic items, granola, chocolates, teas, deli meats, cheeses, etc. Anyway, it's a great little place and even better as there is not really anything comparable within several blocks.

we had this football chant in college when we'd demolish a hyped up team..." OVER _RATE_ED!" *clap clap clap clap clap* Alas, these 5 star reviews set me up for a sandwich with promise... that simply turned out to be anti-climactic! I had the chicken tortellini soup (very little soup but chock full of veggies and tortellini) and the jamon, jamon sandwich that has serrano ham with mixed greens, tomatoes, manchego cheese (one of my favorites!) and an interesting addition of quince paste. I was so intrigued by this place, thus scoured their website and nearly ended up memorizing the menu before coming here. The sandwich was just... okay. The bread was hard and I know it was the end of the day, but that's no excuse. The ham and cheese are both sliced very thinly.. I think this is how cured meats are served in Spain. I do like the atmosphere of this place. It is a down-to-earth, comfortable, menu-on-the-chalkboard type place. They have a small gourmet grocery section with a random assortment of things anything from truffle oil to peppercorns to fancy baking mixes to pint sized gelato. They have a small seating area on the side with a few tables, but I got the feeling a lot of people just came here to get the food to-go. There is street parking out in front. The menu is fun and creative, and I like the idea of this deli, but ultimately I'm all about the taste. And despite the creativity and clever names, my sandwich just wasn't that great! But, I haven't given up on this place yet. I will definitely go back and try the paninis.

I've got to go down a star, sorry, but they've been out of the peanut butter cookies the last few times I've been there. Really though I'm knocking one off because the service has been sloooooow. It was busy, I know, but open more than one register.

I came here a couple weeks ago while in Hyde Park. They offer several hot and cold sandwich options, salads, and many side dishes, as well as coffee drinks and baked breakfast goods. I had the Blue Moo sandwich which was roast beef, Maytag blue cheese, and fresh greens on a baguette style roll. I dined in, so the sandwich came with a small portion of one of their sides. I selected one of their bottled sodas to drink, the rhubarb flavor. The sandwich was very fresh and delicious. I thought the accompanying side of marinated asparagus could have been bigger but tasted good. The soda was great. I usually drink diet but they didn't have any so I was quite pleased that the soda was not too sweet or syrupy. The staff was fast and friendly. It is a clean establishment. There are a few tables set up outside for dining. They have a few shelves stocked with dry goods that aren't commonly found in large supermarkets. They also offer a frequent guest program where you can get free food for repeated business. This is exactly the kind of place I would visit weekly if it were walking distance from where I live. I found my experience quite pleasurable but wasn't so enamored that I will have cravings sending me across town. However, I will be back when in Hyde Park for sure.

I once dated a German dude who would make me insane meals of awesome french bread, triple-cream brie, risottos, endive and apple salads, and wine. you know, just for fun. he also had zero sense of humor and a penchant for dead artists. like, hella dead. anyways, this place reminds me of three years of some of the best eats of my life. these men LOVE LOVE LOVE food, in a nuturing, mutual, beautiful way. the guys behind the counter shout out to customers by name as you peruse the various cheeses and salads on display. they will stuff you with samples and their eyes will light up as you agree, "WHY YES! Aged cheddar wrapped in cloth is indeed better! What are those rubes eating plastic-aged cheddar thinking?!?" i can recommend my delicious Marty sandwich; red pepper spread, goat cheese (ask for it), grilled eggplant, and spinach all on a pressed panini. wrap it up w/ some clover coffee and one of sam's homemade oatmeal/chocolate chip cookies. it was awesome, and i didn't have to spend my meal listening to anyone wax poetic about Rembrandt. (Yes, Steffen. The shadows! I get it! shit.) FIVE STARS!

quiet, quaint and well stocked!!! There are not too many places in our area to grab a quality sandwich, so this place is great with sandwiches, salads, dinner items...you name it For breakfast, I love the crossaint with nutella and bananas. Served toasted, it's very comforting as a breakfast item I love the duck salad. The duck is not at all greasy, and the cheese and pecans are both great additions to it. But the salad dressing is the star, as it is both flavorful and a nice light treat parking fairly easy,

Staff is great! Food is always delicious. I always enjoyed the Godfather, Butcher's Wife, and the Tuna Salad. They maybe relatively small for the big eater at 8 dollars, but the ingredients are top notch and fresh. Today I went with the lighter option. I got the smoke salmon salad (aka Fishy). It's not off the charts but the vinaigrette is a nice pairing with the rest of the ingredients. As you order, don't forget the rewards program. Spend $200.00 and receive $10.00 off your next order. If you're ordering for the office, just stack it.

The owner guy behind the counter gave me the most fricking amazing jumbo shrimp covered with creamy Israeli feta and fat orzo as a sample, and I think that makes Sam and I kind of like foodie blood brothers now. (or sisters, whatever) This place is beyond awesome - a stylish, deli/grocery store combo led by the absolute nicest guys ever. Sam and Tim are the co-owners and they are a pure pleasure and delight to talk with - they fucking LOVE food and know a lot about cheese. And they are hell of proud of the high quality ingredients they use. I could only dream of shopping exclusively on all of their hoity toity fancified organic and gourmet wares, but I am going to begin conquering their sandwiches on the regular from here on out. They've been in business only two months or so and have apparently become THE SPOT for the high rollas of the neighborhood - and if you don't know who's in the neighborhood, you better start reading the paper or something.... I had a turkey with quince paste and manchego cheese on grilled pretzel bread. Do you hear me? How could that not be good? Um, yeah - it was damned slamming. I love it. Love it up and down, from their family pictures on the walls and the colorful chalkboard menu, to the fantastic cheese samples they pushed on me when I was really just asking to buy some. Automatically one of the best new spots in Chicago that nobody knows about. Yet.

As a new resident of Hyde Park I would always pass this place thinking I should try it. I finally did, and the overall consensus is that I.Love.It. Adios Subway, and Potbelly's. Okay, well maybe not potbellys because i love them and their oatmeal chip cookies but I digress. Z&H is a fantastic upscale unpretentious deli/market with a great selection of panini's, sandwich's etc. Their market has a ton of healthy options and spices that are higher quality than Whole Foods, but you don't have to spend your whole paycheck. I got the turkey and brie panini with some type of curry chutney and it was delish. The price was also very reasonable (comparable to subway) but MUCH better quality. Also the staff was extremely friendly and gave great recommendations. I'LL BE BAACK! I'm only deducting one star because they forgot to put my cookie in the bag so when I got home I was disappointed. Next time though..

I love this place. The food is phenomenal. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable about their food and their coffee. Since I started going there, I have tried to not have the same sandwich twice because they have such variety and every sandwich is tasty. There is a small seating area for you to enjoy a casual meal, just be prepared to share the big tables with others when it is busy. For me that is part of the fun, because it provides a sense of community in a community based shop. This place should not be missed and should be part of your regular weekly routine.

Just in terms of service- this place is incredible (in a great way)! The people who work here are so passionate about their store and what they are doing that you just feel so good about walking in the place, spending a bit of time and money on things of terrific quality. The first time I drove by, I was on the way to work. I sometimes drive east on 47th. In a zombie haze I usually can't pick up on anything new- but for some reason that morning I glanced over and saw some shiny windows and the word "Cheese" inscribed in frosted glass. I think either that night or the next day I pulled my girlfriend (now wife) there saying it would be a surprise for us. It was a perfect surprise- and better than I imagined it would be in fact. We were greeted by a trio of guys who were so enthusiastic about their store and what they had to offer this under served community- that you could really feel the passion. Not at all desperate or sales-gimmicky or anything else that you sometimes encounter with some business owners/managers- very genuine. They explained their concept and their mission- and even told us that if there was any specialty item that we were looking for that they didn't have- to let them know so that they could seek it out and get it for us! There were multiple apologies for a couple wracks on their shelves being sparse- and that was simply because I believe they were only a week into opening. What they did have was all of tremendous quality and variety- and almost made my head spin thinking of all the possibilities of how I could use this stuff. Then came the best part- the fact that they were willing to have us try basically any cheese they had with them! It was like a full-blown tasting. We walked out of there feeling guilty about it. They actually cut into fresh cheese blocks just so that we could compare that one to the previous one- and with great information and explanations on the origins and backgrounds of the cheese, the farmers who make it, and how they compare with some that we have had before. Subsequent trips have also been just as delicious and informative (I have learned all about the Clover system and how the coffee is made by that machine- and why it offers a "cleaner" and more true experience than filtered and pressed coffee), and since then I can say that I feel that I have not been there enough. So- I suggest everyone to come check out Z&H and while you are down here, the rest of my gorgeous neighborhood- Hyde Park. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I know- Zaleski & Horvath is technically Kenwood, or North Kenwood- but if Obama can acceptably claim Hyde Park his 'hood- then I want my claim to be reciprocated!

I am SO EXCITED that they will be opening another location on 57th street. Spring can't come fast enough! Everything here is beyond delicious. The cheese selection is diverse, the sandwiches are sooo tasty (old major with curry chutney, anybody?) and I have serious cravings for the veggie Down on the Farm. The staff is so friendly and helpful. There's not a lot of seating here, but they will always find room for you. Coffee beverages are great, as are the specialty juices/sodas from the cooler. I also love the gourmet grocery part of the store- picked up some pickled asparagus for the BF and I'm still running on brownie points.

Awesome things you get to live near if you happen to dwell in Hyde Park: 1. President-almost-not-elect-anymore. (Drawback--fricking bus reroutes.) 2. Your school, probably. (Drawback--goodbye, social life.) 3. Z&H. (Drawback--none.) Jamon Jamon. Serrano ham + manchego + quince paste. My friends all think I am vegetarian and freak out when I order it. Worth it. (In response, friends: no, I don't believe in labels, I just don't like nearly all meat and love nearly all things green and rooty. Also, QUINCE PASTE.) I have been known to splurge on a $3 brownie, which I am pretty sure are flourless little bitches because I can eat on them for about a week. Minus one star for being four blocks away and making me poor(er.)

One of the problems of Hyde Park is that there are too few restaurants within comfortable walking distance to campus (if you go to the University). Z&H hasn't yet solved this since they are located on 47th Street--which, technically, is Kenwood, but whatever-- but I gladly ride my bike here for their sandwiches and coffee. I had the Jackie Treehorn Production--a breakfast sandwich on a croissant with triple crème brie and pâté--and nearly died. I'd thought about putting an egg on it but there is no need: this sandwich is perfection. When I asked about the name, they explained that it comes from the movie "The Big Lebowski" as there is a character who is a porn producer and someone once said this sandwich was "sex in your mouth," thus the name. Whoever that person was, they were right. I'm so glad they are opening a location on 57th. Now I can go more often because it's closer to my job/house/campus. SWEET!

Ever eat something(s) and know that it was/ they were delicious as in probably better than what you might find other places & yet, understand that the very next thing you order and eat on your next upcoming visit will taste even better than what you had before. Yeah. Z & H is kind of like that with the bonus of a welcoming, intelligent and patient staff who want you to know why what your eat is so delicious.

Why I really like Z&H: gourmet sandwiches, great coffee beverages, yummy bagels, good sized menu, friendly staff, and easy access on a main street. If you didn't know it was there, you might miss it.. wish is a shame because more people should know about Z&H. Unfortunately I don't live in the area anymore, but I try to stop in whenever I'm nearby.

When I win the lottery and move into one of those palaces on Ellis, I'm going to stop in here all the time. This is the most beautiful little store I've ever seen. I walked in expecting to grab a sandwich, and instead wandered around marveling at everything I saw. Organic raw honeys, vinegars and oils, squid ink pasta two feet long, real licorice, chocolates, house-made spice blends (including one called "Retro Italian"... it was like they were expecting me), and other fancy groceries that I was helpless to resist. Not planning on buying anything, I hadn't taken a basket, but then I pulled a jar off the shelf, then another, then some candy, glass beakers for mixing vinaigrettes (in French), a bag of chips, and a pint of ice cream. I walked around in a completely silly manner balancing all of this when someone who I believe is one of the owners asked me if I wanted to taste some cheese. After asking me what kinds of cheeses I like, he chose an aged Italian cheese that I've already forgotten the name of, but we agreed that it was "lovely." He then gave me samples of three gorgeous but at the same time wildly different blue cheeses that I know I'm going to come back for soon. I eventually got around to buying a sandwich and chose the Bleu Moo, which is fabulous. The owner explained to me that their deli meats are hormone-free, vegetarian grain fed, and preserved with only celery juice and salt. Sandwiches come with a tasting portion of a salad. I expected the usual potato, pasta, etc. options, but when the owner said, "tomato fennel," that caught my attention. Fresh tomatoes with shaved fennel in a light vinaigrette. Delicious. I walked out of there with my bag full of treats with a baguette sticking out of the top, just like on TV.

As the name implies, this is both a cafe/sandwich shop and a specialty market. It really reminds me of the kind of small grocer that you see all over NYC... like a smaller version of Zabars, for example. They have a really extensive selection of cheeses, deli meats, olives, and prepared dishes like salads, gourmet sandwiches, and soups. The staff is super knowledgeable about the products they sell, and always very friendly. My only quibble is that the eat-in area is very small and the space can get pretty crowded at lunchtime, so be prepared to wait a bit to be able to grab a table. This place injects much-needed energy and vibrancy into the north Hyde Park/south Kenwood area. Can't wait until the new location opens up on 57th.

Pay no attention to the market. You can get that stuff elsewhere for less. Go to the deli counter and get an expensive sandwich. Yeah, expensive but they're tasty and they're all totally FOOD PORN. Except I had their Argonaut which is made up of veggie and hummus. It was delicious but when I buy a sandwich and see it's on regular square bread I get the feeling I could have made it by myself for less. I'll be back for another go though.

Stopped for coffee last week with a friend and an employee, recognizing me from the week before, referred to me by name. Say wha?! Awesome. The Iced Clover Au Lait is the most deliciously smooth coffee I've ever had.

I'll admit it: I'm a sucker for independent shops that care about the you, your experience, and good food. With this disclaimer out of the way, WOW!! Z&H is awesome. I saw their ad in our student newspaper, noted they had a Clover coffee machine, and couldn't help exclaiming, "Why haven't I heard of this place??" This weekend, a group of us teamed together and trekked up to 47th Street to check it out. The food was excellent. The service was friendly. The Clover coffee was... sigh... amazing. And they have a market of delectables to boot, many of the organic variety. As their business grows, there are little things I'm sure they'll add: an extra person taking food orders when the line gets long, shades on a few of the windows to allow the light in but keep the sun out of customers' eyes, an "About Us" section on their website (call me curious, but I love knowing the backstory of an establishment), and delivery service to campus (especially evenings when hungry students crave good food but aren't motivated enough to make the journey to 47th Street). Thanks for being a part of our neighborhood, Z&H!

Not just good food. I really enjoy Z & H for the excellent food but the service is great also. I love their homemade hummus and selection of cheeses. My husband appears to be more interested in cooking since we started eating here. It is a joy see business owners who truly enjoy their business and are devoted to bringing the best products to the community. This small, homey place was a well thought out plan that has been executed to perfection.

Seriously amazing. This is what a sandwich should taste like. Fresh, quality ingredients, reasonably priced. If you like coffee, you should get some there, they have probably the only Clover machine in Hyde Park* with about 7 varieties to check out. The also appeared to have a very decent selection of higher-end/esoteric/exciting grocery items. They looked pricey to me, but I don't buy too many of them. *Clover machines make single cups at a time, and you can basically customize every aspect of the process (grind, temperature, brew-time) with precision. Could be the best thing that ever happened to coffee. Starbucks recently bought them, which is a good idea; I bet it could even make Starbucks beans taste good. starbucks.com/clover

"Makes Whole Foods Look Like Wal-Mart" I initially went to Z&H because I had heard they have a Clover coffee machine (the only other one I know of is at Intelligentsia, whose coffee they carry, incidentally). The owner, Tim, gleefully demonstrated this one-cup-at-a-time wonder, and poured me the single best cup of coffee I've ever had. I was immediately impressed by the variety of specialty and organic foods on the shelves. My shopping bag included: real Spanish chorizo and Cabrales, curried peanut butter (trust me), Jasper Hill aged cheddar, peppadews, ostrich pate, organic tomatoes, Vosages chocolates, etc. And then there's the deli meats. Go in and ask for a slice of the Applegate Farms roast beef...it's incredible! My only complaint was that a number of things were missing price tags, but it turns out Z&H haven't even had their official opening yet. I was going to compare Z&H to Fox & Obel, but the owners/employees are what gives Z&H the edge. These guys know their product and are happy to share their knowledge (for instance, talking about cheese for 20 min to a fellow cheese nerd) without being at all condescending. They just seem to love great food as much as I do!

Where was Z&H when I was in Hyde Park several times a week?! Even though the market is bit of a hike from where I live, there is nothing stopping me from coming here at least a couple times a month. One of the best things about Z&H is how eager the owners and employees are to talk to you about any and all of the products available. You are bound to run in to an expert on every item in there. Any question will be met with an enthusiastic and knowledgable reply. How about a list of all of the great things at Z&H: ~ Cheese, glorious cheese! So many choices (just ask for a taste, go on...) ~ Sandwiches. Several delectable options, or make your own. Who doesn't want to eat while they shop? ~Clover Coffee. I can not stress it enough. The most amazing cup of coffee I've ever had. Ask about the varieties - they'll help you out! ~GuS. Grown up Soda. So far i've only had the Extra Dry Ginger Ale flavor, but it's addicting. ~Lemon Bars and Brownies. A local baker makes these, among other items I've yet to try. The lemon bar has the perfect tang and a wonderful buttery shortbread base. The chocolate brownie is HUGE and saturated with chocolate. ~Curried Cashews. Need I say more? Honestly. If you've never been to Hyde Park, now's the time. It's so easy to get to, whether you drive, take the CTA or ride the Metra. After visiting Z&H you can check out the Museum of Science and Industry, Jackson Park, or the Japanese Garden and make a day of it. You won't be sorry.

Wow, my wish for the Goddess and the Grocer to magically plop down in Hyde Park has come true, and it's even better than I imagined!!! Z&H is fantastic! If I had my druthers it would be located on 53rd or 57th, but then again, it's good for me to venture beyond my usual places in Hyde Park. And Amen for their pioneer spirit! May this be the beginning of a much-needed renaissance in Kenwood! So now onto the actual place...the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. One guy beamed with earnest enthusiasm over the Clover coffee and showed me, with great glee, how he squeegeed the foam off the top. Delicious and fun-to-watch coffee? Check. Another guy helped me pick out the perfect cheese from their amazing cheese counter to accompany my cranberry chutney. He was rather generous with the samples and gave me a great tip on how to present the goat cheese that I selected. Another guy wrote down my suggestion to add the Tomato Mountain Farm Sun-Gold Preserves (my beloved tomato jelly) to the other TMF items they stock. After getting my cheese and poking around the place for awhile (so many delicious things to buy!), I sat down to a breakfast sammy of ham and gruyere on a croissant. So simple, yet so delicious! I cannot wait to come back and try their pate and their deli sandwiches! I know that I am going to become a Z&H groupie; unlike Goddess and Grocer, they actually sell staples, like Organic Valley dairy products, that I need anyway, so why not trek up to 47th and throw in the possibility of an amazing cup of coffee or jar of jelly? Z&H Market Cafe: an overall hooray!

I teach flute lessons in this neighborhood and I usually ride there in a car with the other teachers. I first discovered this place on election night when our ride was unable to drive us. The neighborhood was full of energy that evening as we walked to the bus stop to head home. When we walked past this place, I was really surprised to see it because I'd never noticed it before in the car, so I was kind of staring in the windows and trying to check it out. The guys working inside noticed and smiled and waved at us, which made me really happy. I didn't stop in until this week, and only had about 10 minutes to look around. . I'm really excited to stop back in when I have more time and can try one of their sandwiches. Basically, I wanted to buy everything, but limited myself to a box of Dorset Cereals' granola. YUM.

I LOVE THEIR COFFEE! It tastes fanTASTIC! It was really smooth and just tasted great. I've had sandwiches catered from Z&H before and I've always thought they were tasty. They have a pretzel bread that I think is amazing and unlike any other pretzel bread I've had before - it's the perfect softness and good wholesome pretzel-ey taste. They have a large selection of cheese that I want to try out next time...! I will definitely be going back

Finally managed to eat here a month before leaving Hyde Park. The place is about the same size as University Market and sells a similar variety of stuff, but at higher quality. The sandwich counter is much more central to the store, though there is barely any seating indoors and little more outside. I was only here for lunch so didn't look at the goods they were selling. The menu is expansive and covers an entire wall of the store. Rather than look things over, I asked for what the most popular sandwiches were. I'm a sucker for anything with turkey+bacon+avocado so I ended up having that (they called it a Mae Wilson--all their sandwiches are whimsically named). It came a little scoop of potato salad and since I ordered right before a big swell of people came out pretty quickly. The sandwich came on what seemed to be regular wheat bread and though the ingredients were fresh, they were all somewhat ordinary. As a result, I thought the sandwich tasted ordinary. I did have a bite of my friend's sandwich featuring roast beef, which I usually hate, but it was delicious. If I manage to come down here again, I'm definitely going for something more adventurous... They also have a cool selection of drinks including handmade Italian sodas. Basically, you pick a flavor (e.g. strawberry, vanilla, pomegranate, about 20 others) or combination of flavors, and they pour the syrup into a cup of ice and add some carbonated water and shake. Voila, instant soda. They're about as sweetened as a Gus, so are definitely very palatable.

I hand't been very particluar about my coffee until I was introduced to this place and was persuaded to try something different. I ordered an Americano at the request of my girlfriend at the time and since she seemed to know a thing or two about their expensive equipment I said what the hell. Creamy, rich, a hint of chocolateyness and bold. All I could ever imagine coffee should be was in this cup. Now, I usually fill it with cream and sugar so the taste is of course personalized to my suiting. I'm also impressed by the sandwich selection. I like the chorizo and egg for breakfast and the pig on a pretzel for lunch. But I have tried several others and wasn't disappointed at all by the unique combinations of meats and toppings. It's truly an adventure in palate paradise. They also sell exotic chocolates, which I can't resist buying to satisfy my sweet tooth, and of course fresh pastries. Try it for yourself, I think you'll like it.

I love Z & H. Their concoctions are imaginative, combining not so obvious ingredients to produce delictable sandwiches. Believe me, I would have never guessed that I would enjoy tomato chutney on my corned beef or chorizo seitan on my breakfast sandwich. My favorite sandwiches are a little pecorino and the godfather and their vegetarian chili is also outstanding (good amount of spiciness). I won't give them five stars because of a few issues. During one visit, the lettuce in my salad was quite stale. In addition, for set menu items, the bread type is often variable; once my little pecorino sandwich came on whole wheat and then the next time on a focaccia-type bread. But this all minor, as Z &H is still one of the best around North Kenwood.

Dare to dream because miracles do happen. Finally the South Side gets the specialty grocery store and cafe they've long deserved. Unlike the charmless Treasure Island or its predecessor, the god-awful, now deceased Hyde Park Co-op, Z&H gets it right. Not only do they have good quality bagels and coffee, but they're actually open for business at 7 a.m. A rarity at this end of Chicago. Sure, it's a little pricey but the quality is top notch -- on par with NY's Zabar's. And the folks who run the place actually seem like they enjoy what they do.

The packaged foods are shockingly expensive, and the coffee's no steal either. Staff is exceptionally friendly, though (with restaurant commendations for this neighborhood newbie), and there's really nothing else quite like this around. Like Arnold, I'll be back.

So my gal pal and I were going to the movies in the park last night (Sunset Boulevard woot woot!) and this excursion required some good eats. The pal was in charge of wine, so I took over the food. Decided it would be the perfect time to give this place a shot. I mean, it's like 5 mins off the Ryan on my way home. No brainer. I (illegally) park my car to run in and grab some yummies. I got the Marty for the pal (she's a vegetarian) and the Godfather for myself. The pal lives in Park Forest, which is like 211th s. western. Freaking FAR! She raved about this thing so much that she's trying to coordinate pickup/ drop off spots so that I can get this thing in her hands on a regular basis. She couldn't stop raving about it. Best veggie sandwich she's ever had. Mine was delicious. Generous portions of prosciutto, fresh mozz, basil, and tomato on the wonderfully chewy/ crusty bread with just enough balsamic to give it that zing. I got an avocado boat topped with a few perfectly cooked shrimp. Super light and refreshing. Get it. Also went with the roasted asparagus, in a tart vinaigrette with some roasted red peppers. Lastly, got the cous cous with zucchini and feta. Man, we were practically licking our plates. Probably would have if we weren't surrounded by thousands of movie goers. So while I was doing all of my ordering, I was chatting with the owner and the counter guys. Telling them I needed stuff that would be good for picnicking b/c I'm going to the movies in the park, yadda yadda. The owner gives me the ecofriendly bag because it's easier to carry (no charge), and some seriously tasty cookies (also no charge). I mean, I was sold on this place by their friendly demeanor but the graciousness definitely sealed the deal. They signed me up for a frequent buyer program, which rocks, because that is definitely what I'm going to be. Oh - and the owner goes "these cookies will go great with William Holden" - boy did they ever!

Great place love to go here on 47th street. The owners and staff are very friendly and knowledgable. Good 'gourmet' food selection, on shelves, in fridge and cooler. A very MUCH needed place around Hyde Park-Kenwood. Cheese selection is good, homemade bagels and good roast chicken. Other location is too busy and disorganized. Good place 47th street!

Stopped in for a bite to eat a couple of weeks ago. Took home a Godfather with veggie chili and a half-pound of Sidamo (oh, how I've missed good coffee), and of course, all three were phenomenal. Customer service was quick and courteous. Definitely worth checking out.

They sell glass bottle pop, which is nice. The staff is quite friendly. The sandwiches are fresh and tasty and I guess animal friendly, but... 7 bucks? I just can't make myself pay that much for a darned sandwich... even if it is tasty... and they need to choose a better bread to make the Godfather sandwich on, like a challah roll, because the one they use now is too tough to bite through unless completely saturated by vinaigrette.

My favorite thing about this location is the staff talks to you because no one is waiting. That and I bring In a starbucks reusable cup(I know I know... But it's reusable) and they fill it up with delicious coffee and then put a z&h horizontal sticker over the star bucks logo. I love this place. Love love.

Very yummy food, and great coffee drinks of all sorts. what others say about the quality of products and customer service is true. my complaints lie in two areas: the tables by the window get incredibly hot when the sun is out (even in the dead of winter!) - I might suggest getting some blinds or something? I like studying here, but find myself unable to do so for very long when it's sunny for that reason. Also, it'd be nice to have some more space for the tables, to have more places to sit. It strikes me that this place is trying to be so many things at once that at least as a comfortable cafe to spend an afternoon in it doesn't succeed. And please, change the music! not that it's bad, just that it is so repetitive. Also prevents me from visiting very often. If you're just going in to get some lunch it's great, but I've tried to make it a good study spot and failed.

You should definitely give Z&H a try. It is a great addition to the Hyde Park / Kenwood. They have great coffee and sandwiches. Specifically, you should try their iced mocha. If you are a cheese fan they have a very good selection for a store their size and even some that places like Whole Foods are missing.

Zaleski and Horvath has now catered two of my events so this review is long overdue. The first event, for a charity, was well done and the folks at ZH even threw in a wonderful bag of goodies for our staff appreciation gifts. The food was nicely presented, arrived ontime, and was quite tasty, with very unique appetizers. The second event was a happy hour for my employees in Chicago. This is where they really saved me. My caterer, A Table for Two, bailed on me totally at the last minute (10am the morning of the 5pm event). I was sitting in a Starbucks at the time I received the email (yes, email, not a phone call, but an email...) telling me they could not deliver on their commitment. I immediately began to think about how many little finger food "thingies" I would have to get from Dominicks or Whole Foods to feed 40 people when suddenly I thought of ZH. I drove over and parked, having never actually been there and not knowing exactly what to expect. I walked in and introduced myself to Sam, the owner, who without hesitation walked me through options for the party. Zaleski and Horvath delivered an amazing combination of crudite, fruit and cheese, these amazing fig and goat cheese crustini, and some salmon on toast points. In a very short time, they came through when the cateres failed me. For that, they earn 5 stars for service and delivery. So, if there is any rub, it is this: I am a normal guy and sometimes just want ham and american cheese on wheat bread with mayo. I actally enjoy a Jimmy John's sub every once and a while, and literally just finished an order of McDonald's fries. I think I'd feel a little guilty ordering a basic sandwich at ZH. My friends would call this a deli for the wealthy. Even though it is not expensive, it does ever so slightly have that smug Hyde Park like socially conscious pretentiousness whereby the "common" non-regulars might be made to feel a bit "uncivilized". That said, they saved my event and for that I am incredibly grateful! So, I will smug it up and return, appropriately unshaven and grunged up, to enjoy a serrano ham, manchego cheese, quince paste, dijon mustard, mixed greens, and tomato on french bread sandwich with a nice cup of coffee or iced tea. But, I'm going to Dominick's for my desert and ice cream.

Not sure how Z&H ended up on 47th St., but I'm glad it did. Unbelievable family delicatessen environment. Great sandwiches and coffee. Excellent music. Free internet. Some fine cheeses. A random assortment of other culinary products. Please go. I can't lose this place.

Update: 6 months later and this place still captures my heart. Stopped by there today for a sandwich and Clove coffee and, always, the owners remembered my name, asked me if I wanted my usual sandwich (which I did) and brought it to my table. I splurged and bought some chocolate for a friend and they rung it all up for me. The sandwich (Pollo del Mar) was fantastic, the rain had stopped, and Z&H was still pretty much my favourite spot in all of Chicago. Job well done! Oh, they also have a program where you get $10 off after spending $100. Put another way, everything in the place is de facto 10% off!

Cute cafe/market. Reminds me of places around my hometown. The coffee is really really good, and food is very appetizing. However, the store itself is very small and there are 4 tables (not enough seating in my book).

If you live near this place, go often and smirk at those of us who are planted on the north side. For northsiders, I highly recommend Z&H as a reward for biking to Hyde Park (aside from Hyde Park, which of course is its own reward). That's how we came across Z&H. It was so hard to choose from the many wonderful menu options, but I settled on a special - a turkey sandwich that had many wonderful fresh ingredients I'm not trying to list since it doesn't appear to exist anymore anyway. We enjoyed the outdoor seating and split a fancy carbonated juice drink I'd never heard of but enjoyed muchly. Counter service was super friendly.

When it comes to a coffee and sandwich shop Z&H is as close to perfection as I have encountered. Bernita is my first choice, the Godfather my second. Great ingredients and unique flavors. Atmosphere, presentation, and service all fit perfectly together and make for a flawless experience. Granted, I don't expect much from a sandwich place; just a tasty meal. But Z&H makes me realize I should expect more.

  • Char Y.

I thought the sandwiches were good, but a little pricey. That goes for everything this store carries, good but pricey. I also ordered their iced tea, and it did not taste like anything at all, not even tea. I am disappointed because I read so many good reviews, and I did not experience the same.

Finally, an A-1 food stop in Kenwood. The owners and staff are the friendliest in Hyde Park, the food and coffee are great and the place is as cute as could be. Awesome peanut butter cookies, fantastic cheese counter, lovely salads and really nice breakfast sandwiches. Definitely put it in your regular rotation.

I really like the "concept", especially since I am a foodie. However the service leaves a bad taste in my mouth - no pun intended. One two separate occasions the same person - clearly with a chip on her shoulder - was rude and dismissive. Today, I stop by to get a smoked turkey sandwich and she was way too much -- that I cancelled my order and walked out. DONE! So note to owners - not matter how fab your products, treating your customers -- all your customers -- with courtesy is a requirement not an option.

My quality of life in HP has improved 1000 fold. Excellent espresso, tasty sandwiches, and only down the road from me on 57th. Makes the walk into campus that much more pleasurable. My only complaints? Impossibly busy during lunch hour... so get in before or after! Also... I wish they were open later, so I could sneak in for a light dinner... Actually: Can they just let me live there?

I can't believe I only found this place when I moved out of Hyde Park. i used to drag myself to some place downtown to find the stuff this grocer has. I think a lot of stuff is totally overpriced here, but some things are either a good value or totally worth it. I still need to come back and try the sandwiches, but I was really happy with the jam selection and a lot of the other stuff. I bought this terrible soda here though... don't let all the fancy packaging fool you. It was some fermented orange soda for $2.50 a bottle =(

I live in the same building as this place and I was sooooooo happy when it opened up. I have to have a cup of Joe every morning (to keep my sanity and eyes open) so the convenience factor was unbeatable. I have yet to try anything that I do not like - from cheese to various products on the shelves. The guys that own this place Tim and Sam are awesome! They have great personalities and are very knowledgeable about their products. They have a great staff working with them as well. I would definitely recommend anyone in the area to stop by or make a special trip over. At first I thought the prices were high, but I have found that they are comparable to places such as Whole Foods and Treasure Island. I think you get what you pay for when it comes to great eats - and the ones at Z&H are definitely worth it!

Superb on every conceivable level. Selection and quality are the best I've seen at a place like this. Price is pretty much what it should be for what you're getting -- for example, they make the best sandwiches I've ever had. Best thing, though, is the service -- incredibly friendly people who are genuinely helpful.

Since the day we moved to Chicago a year ago, I've been telling my boyfriend that I want to settle down in a place where the people behind the counter at the local market know my name. Along came Z&H. Now I don't want to move. Coffee, sandwiches, gormet goodies ... they have it all. And if you run across something you haven't tried before, they'll introduce you (Nice to meet you, Clover coffee!). I stop here at least twice a week for a breakfast sandwich (try the Tenzig Norgay) and coffee, and every other week for lunch (thumbs up on the Pig on a Pretzel). The little goodies in the front case are baked daily and you have to try a Sam's chocolate chip cookie. But the coolest part is the friendliness of the owners and staff. You're more than just a customer to them and they truly appreciate your business.

I'm quite fond of Z&H. The owners are ever-present and passionate about their wares. Their cheeses and charcuterie, while a limited variety, are first rate. The coffee is fabulous. Moreover, the old-world qualities of their customer service are welcome and appreciated. They remember my name. They remember what I like to eat. They know the kinds of things I like to cook and they recommend new product they think I would enjoy. Z&H has, in my opinion, the best customer service in the Hyde Park/Kenwood neighborhood.

This is the only restaurant in Chicago I have been to twice. Why? It's superb, endless, relatively inexpensive and the guys behind the counter are a Pitchfork fantasy and could charm an carnivore into trying the seitan sandwich. Which was delicious.

Well well well, I finally get the chance to test the much talked about Zaleski & Horvath Market Cafe. This little joint has been quietly existing in North Kenwood since last October and not too far from my nest. When this place first opened I said to myself, "6 months & they're toast"... Well, they are here and they brought some kickass food with them. Today, my first journey inside this cafe was quite positive. The staff is A-1 nice, friendly & helpful! I chowed down on the Lil' Smokey & O'Malley sandwich and let me tell you this sandwich answered the bell! Wheat breat with slightly grilled panini tracks that warehoused shaved smoked turkey, curried mayo, romaine, brie & tomatoe chutney. All I can say is D-to the-A-to the-M-to the-N!!!!!! What a kickass sandwich- and that's putting it mildly. This delightful palate pleaser was washed down with a Gales Cinnamon Vanilla flavored Root Beer. Verdict: 4 Stars! Only complaint would be the LARGE menu on the wall, there's about 100 or so items up there written in chalk, though the pleasure of my meal easily forgives that little sin. Encore soon, real soon!

I am just so lucky. I live half a block from this amazing place. It's like the beginning of a new semester -- I get to look forward to learning more about cheese, and beautiful coffee, pates, unique tastes (quince paste -- can't wait!). It is such a treat for me, a serial Hyde Parker from WAY back, to have this market & cafe close enough to run across the way for a jar of spices or a cup of coffee. Now we just have to get the Prez to stop there -- when he's in town (like today) no one can park on their street.

Z & H is a great place to get a sandwich for lunch or to get coffee and study. There are so many amazing options that one would have to eat here daily to get bored. The sandwiches are consistently excellent and the people who work there are knowledgeable and helpful. The sweet potato and chorizo soup is absolutely delicious and bagels are some of the best that I have encountered in Chicago.

I received an email from the owner apologizing for my experience and was invited back to take another stab at the Mae Wilson. This time there was gaucamole galore! Great customer service and food!

This place totally rocks. I have been there twice now and each time got a couple of cheese (chosen after the dude let me taste about ten different ones and gave me direction on my choices), some duck pate (a-f'ing-mazing, just like my moms), some incredible crusty bread, and some other bits and pieces. It smells great, food is good quality, the dudes are quirky and know what they are talking about. This place is exactly what Hyde Park needs.
