I don't know where these bad reviews are coming from. Try the Lemon Chicken. Maybe that would change your mind.

We where looking for good Chinese in river north area. Now we found it, this place is great. We order there many times for lunches our favorite is spicy fried rice combo and a side of vegy egg rolls one of the best in the city no joke. Can't speak much for dining in experienced

Ordered delivery through GrubHub. Rating is primarily for the food quality, but delivery taking about 20 minutes longer than quoted didn't help. Pot stickers were very large, but also very doughy. Pork filling was bland. Sauce was saltier than most. Mongolian beef was average at best. Unmemorable. Will not be reordering. Too many other great options.

Needed to grab dinner after a long day. Wanted to eat a great place downtown but it had a two hour wait and we were hungry. Several other places we stopped by had long waits so decided to head out a bit to another area but before getting to the car we saw this place and it looked a little inviting as its on the corner. The food was below average. The service was fine but either the cook or owner/chef appeared to be listening to out conversation. Rating is based on food primarily. The wonton soup was average/OK but the Hunan beef was below average and the Empress Tofu was bad. The Mongolian beef was ordered 6 out of 10 hot and had almost no heat and the Tofu dish was ordered 10 out of 10 hot and was slightly hotter but really quite mild. The two dishes were generally low flavor to almost no flavor. Not expensive but considering the plain interior and quality of food $12 is high. There are better choices.

My company ordered food from them today and everyone who ate from there had a stomachache and threw up. Their food has a very strong flavor, possibly to mask the lack of freshness of the food. Buyer beware. You've been warned!

Perfect quick and cheap lunch spot in the loop! Stumbled upon this place and was really happy that I did. The service was insanely fast--food was ordered and served within 10 minutes, making it a good lunch stop for those busy loop professionals. The egg drop soup was fresh and tasty. And the Orange chicken was made with fresh white meat chicken...yum. The staff was also really pleasant and appreciative of our complements. Will be coming back soon for more!

After a long day at work, I want to be able to pick up a quick meal and head home. If you are looking for a hassle free experience, do not step food in this establishment. I went in and ordered a vegetable fried rice. When she said the total out loud it sounded like she said $17 instead of the $7 that I was expecting. I corrected her and she nodded in agreement. The noise of the exposed kitchen and music was probably making us both hear different things. When I went to sign for my order, I told her that the total was wrong. She then told me that was the price for two orders of fried rice. I told her that I only ordered one. She quickly became defensive and said, "we both heard you say two." She pointed to a man who was standing next to her and had nothing to do with the order that I placed with HER. I'm in customer service too and no matter what you think you might've heard, you correct the mistake without argument. If that is how all customers are treated, it is no wonder that they didn't have a single person dining in.

Skip this place. Ordered sesame and got sesame soup with 10x more vegetables then chicken. Not at all what I ordered. It's my favorite dish. I have had it a 1000 times at a hundred different places. I asked for my credit card back after he swiped it. He said and I quote, "we hold it hostage". Like that's an option. I won't be back here.

Yu Choy offers tasty, simple Chinese fare at attractive prices. I'm glad that it's in the neighborhood, having moved here just a week ago. I stopped in the first time to dine-in after hauling boxes all day and went with one of their specials (soup + egg roll + entree for about 10 bucks). I thought this was a great value and it definitely filled me up. My only warning would be that their egg rolls are *very* deep fried. Deep frying is probably a plus to many, but I prefer a slightly less decadent egg roll. I've also picked up soup for take-out, which is a comically good deal. For about 4 bucks, you get a gigantic container of soup which can be a dinner in and into itself, especially if you are going for the hearty Won Ton soup (I think I ended up with 9 or 10 won tons for 4 bucks). I of course acknowledge that there are plenty of fancy Asian places offering more eclectic offerings in the downtown area, at higher prices. But Yu Choy offers reliable, friendly, and consistent Chinese food, which is something that can easily be missing in a downtown neighborhood. Given the low prices, I think it's worth dropping in for a meal or grabbing takeout and judging for yourself.

I really like this place! You have to know what you're getting going in. This isn't a linen tablecloth dim lighting mood place. This is your gimme some food that will fill my face kind of place. Paper napkins and hot mustard packets in a basket on the table. It's awesome when you want no frills dining. A couple of tips: Soups are BIG...almost a meal into themselves. Too much for one person to eat and have room for anything else, so take a friend or get some to go. Egg rolls are classic deep fried and not microwaved. If you ask for spicy you'll get it! My as-requested spicy fried rice was wonderfully hot! Also the hot mustard at the table in the packets is pretty potent as well - just like I like it! All in all a good cheap chinese place.

Service was friendly and fast but the food was really bad. Curry chicken had very little chicken and was dull. Fried rice tasted only like dark soy sauce. You must really like dark soy sauce to enjoy this food. Egg roll was cold and chewy. Fried dumplings were doughy. Really doughy. I ate about half of my meal. Sorry Yu Choy.

  • Jason G.

All I'm going to say is, if you like heat, just ask for whatever you're ordering spicy! I loved every bit of it and if you happen to be walking by this place and saw a dude stuffing his face through the big windows, I'm sorry... But I'm not sorry. Go check it out, well worth it!

Nice mainstream Chinese. Fried rice had a pleasing smoky flavor. Crab Rangoon a bit too fried/hard. Moo shu pork excellent. My husband would have preferred more spice. Nice woman at counter when I picked up the food.

Descriptive phrase: BYOB cheap Chinese. I'd never been to a BYOB place before, so I was excited to bring a few bottles of wine into this little Chinese joint. The ten of us filled up just about every seat in the place, which is kinda dingy looking and old but not dirty. They only had 4 wine glasses, but it tasted just as good out of a red plastic cup. The servers were extremely nice and seemed happy to accomodate our rambunctious group. I ordered a daily special of General Tso's Beef ($10) but they gave me chicken. No matter. The dish itself was your standard fare, with rice and veggies in a tangy and horrible-for-you sauce. What set Yu Choy apart from other places I've been were what came with the meal. Included in the price was a cup of soup and a vegetable roll. I ordered the Egg Drop soup, and it was hands down the best I've ever had. It was the perfect balance between salty broth and egg; I find most places overdo the egg and it comes out milky. Not the case here. The vegetable roll was crispy and tasty as well. Not a bad place to hang out with friends, eat on the cheap, and get ready for the night.

1 star, only cause I can't place in 0. Holy crap, 50 bucks for tasteless meat. The details: I ordered general tso's beef. The breading was super huge, the beef was almost as thin as paper. I ordered hot. Nothing hot. Like eating plain bread. The sauce so salty, I swear my tongue burns. Disgusting food. We ate burger king after just to get that tasteless crap out of our mouths. Sick, gross, terrible, crap hole of a non restaurant. Service: Sat for 10 minutes without anyone servicing us. Took forever just to get our check. Asked about the food and of course they had no clue. Overall my dumps smell better then this food. I care less normally and never care to ever write a review. Thanks for initiating my rage.

Only place in the area to get some good healthy rice (without all that MSG). But anyways back to this chicken wrap I had today. I call it the "you build it yourself wrap".. #heathy choices #foodgasm #highlyreccommend

After a long new years eve celebration, we decided instead of going out we would opt for delivery. It was my boyfriends tradition to eat Chinese food on new years, and we stumbled upon Yu Choy. It was the closest place to our apartment and despite the negative reviews, we wanted to give it a chance given recent good reviews. What a disappointment! We ordered orange chicken, general tso chicken, crab rangoon, egg drop soup, and hot and sour soup. The chicken was breaded with very little taste--similar to chicken patties you get in the lunch room back in high school. Additionally, the sauces (general tso and orange sauce) were flavorless. The soups were watered down and tasted absolutely digesting. For some reason the hot and sour soup smelled like vodka. Though they were very hot, so that's a good thing! Needless to say we were unimpressed. After a few bites, we threw away the remaining portions and opted for a second dinner. The worst $50 we ever spent. Overpriced, flavorless, worst chinese we've ever had.

Ordered from this place for the first time. We've eaten excellent Chinese food around the world. We can say, without a doubt, that this was the WORST Chinese food EVER, and the worst attitude of any delivery person of any kind of food EVER. Duck was inedible, sweet and sour chicken had no sauce, was mushy, and inedible. Crab Rangoon was mushy, no sauce, and absolutely disgusting. Soup was the most disgusting thing we ever put in our mouths. And the attitude of the delivery person was absolutely the worst ever. I think maybe somebody hijacked our call and the order went to Gary, Indiana, but it came within 45 minutes, so the lousy food was actually from their location in Chicago. DON'T EVER, EVER, ORDER FOOD FROM THIS RESTAURANT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So far so good! I had 3 items from here and take-out service was fast and friendly . Egg drop soup was very rich and tasty, huge portion of shrimp fried rice with lots of shrimp, no skimping. Vegetarian egg rolls were not too greasy . Will definitely go back for take out as price , location , and food are all a hit .

Good, quick cheap Chinese. Food is average but what I love is that it comes out piping hot and the lunch specials are a good value. I'm really surprised at how much I really like this place. Yes it's dark and dated but it doesn't seem dirty. It's humble and the staff is great.

This little place could be a real gem if there was some attention paid to the atmosphere or decor and cleanliness of the space. The food is actually really good and the location is a potential goldmine. It looks to me like the servers are old felons or have done some time in a prison... The lack of care that's given to clothes that are worn is in parr with the general warn down, cobwebs dangling from the ceiling and ceiling fans it's no wonder it's in the state that it's in. The dirty floor and wobbly tables just supports that the management isn't the least bit concerned with the comfort of their patrons for those dining in. I suppose for take out... even then I wonder what the kitchen looks like. I have been a number of times for lunch hoping that they would improve the quality, and to no surprise it's in the same condition. Bottom line I won't return and won't recommend to anyone asking me where to go for dinner or lunch, there are to many clean establishments that serve good Chinese food.

Wonton soup was very flavorless; broth was clear & like warm water, not rich and satisfying. House fried combination rice was pretty boring too. Just soy sauced rice with a few pieces of meat thrown in. No veges or egg. No flavor. Could have done a lot better for the $10 spent here for just those.

Came here once just because it's close to my office and was in a hurry. One word: Bad Mogolian beef - Not fully cooked and there was disgusting blood in every piece..told the owner about it and he came back with "American like it more raw"...Sorry, I don't eat Chinese mogolian beef medium rare. Egg drop soup- too salty chicken noodles - it's ok Egg foo yong - tasteless Will not come back.

I got a free wrap by using my Belly card the other week. You could pick any type of chinese food to be put into a wrap. I chose the Chicken Two Delight which has stir fried chicken, mushrooms, pea pods, bamboo shoots, and rice. It was okay, I certainly ate the whole thing. It just wasn't anything amazing and was pretty salty. I think I'll continue my hunt for a good chinese food place near work.

One place, two names. So - cc review until/unless yelp merges them. O! M, G. If you ever want to teach a bright-eyed class of chef wannabes how to recognize when it is time to pull the plug on a restaurant that has lost its way - bring them here for a weekday dine-in lunch. Food inedibly salty. Table service inattentive (take out/delivery is the cash cow I am guessing). And hey, what self-respecting restaurant doesn't have a confusing alias? (Yu Shan? Yu Choy? Maybe it helps spread the outrage around so the paid 5-stars have a chance to work?)

I have never been to this place, but delivery was good. I like darker friend rice which this place is good for. I was not too impressed with their soup. I ordered rice and soup only since i was feeling sick. Their "Oriental Vegetable Soup" was horrible and very bland! seemed like few veggies cooked in water. My 3 stars are only for the "Vegetable Fried Rice Dinner"! which saved the day! I would give them 4 start if they improved on amount of veggies, and 5 if i can actually get something else with the rice that's equally as good!

This is not Chinese food. It is some kind of Asian, Arab, American mixture (I will not elevate it with the word fusion) The oil vat needs changing this year. Decor: Greasy formica. You get what you pay for. 2 specials: (main + eggroll + soup) + 1 ice tea + tax = 21.00 for Lunch. If you need to fill up and you need fast & cheap this is the place.

I have my pen and paper, my stamp, and my envelope. I'm ready to write home on the topic of Yu Choy. But although I thought long and hard, there's nothing to write home about. This Chinese joint is as white bread as they come.

  • Jacob H.

Only reason a friend and I went here was because we had an amazing discount. I'm a big fan of authentic Chinese, and this was probably very authentic. However, that doesn't mean it was good. I had the beef fried rice, which was errr edible. Other than that it wasn't much. The rice seemed a bit damp and was very dark, yet utterly tasteless. There were maybe 5-7 individual bean sprouts in the large container in addition to tiny morsels of beef and rice. I've never had friend rice with so little extras! Where's the egg, carrot, onion, etc? The orange chicken wasn't much to call home about either. The breading was bad, and I had no idea I was eating chicken. Service was fast and they accept LevelUp and Belly, but the food isn't worth half the price...

UUUHhhhhggggg..... Yu Choy was a Bad Choy... fortunately, this is one mistake I will never repeat. I'm not hard to please when it comes to run-of-the-mill cornershop Chinese food. I expect it to be greasy, thick, perhaps too-tough chicken, whatever. That's the Chinese food I know and like. But, I wholeheartedly agree with Andrew's review below. The General Tso Chicken was like none other I've ever ordered: one container of chicken puff balls and the other of soupy, thin, orangish-sweetish-sourish sauce. Not the sticky, deep-brown, delicious GTC I've had before at a hundred other places. Do not go.

    (1)
  • Amelia B.

Ick. Bland. Nast. I don't expect Chinese food to be a culinary experience, but I was entirely underwhelmed by Yu Choy. I've had much better Chinese from the grocery store. The Orange Chicken was 99% fried dough and 1% chicken-like substance. In fact, there were fried balls of dough that had no chicken inside. The vegetable dishes have little to no flavor. And what's up with the no fortune cookies? Scam! As a side note, Chinese places should not serve hamburgers and sandwiches. Pluses? Extremely fast, and the plastic containers they use for takeout hold up way better than the typical boxes. You can easily (if you can stomach the food) make two to three meals out of the entrees.

    (2)
  • Brandon T.

Honestly it just wasn't very good. I think it would be if they had changed the grease in their fryer in the past couple years. You see they fry everything, which would be fine, if it didn't taste like old grease and have a slight dirty brown color rather than golden. Wanted to like this place, but wont be giving it another chance either..

  • Andrew W.

This is bar none, the worst Chinese food I've ever had. General Tso would have been pissed if he'd known they would some day replicate his recipe this way. The food was delivered in a Whole Foods Grocery Bag, my chicken dish could have been mistaken for some sort of soup it was so liquidy, and the consistency inside of the crab rangoon couldn't pass for cream cheese. According to Grub Hub reviews, Alex called the food "stellar", and Megan generically said "it's the best chinese food i've ever had." Two possibilities, Megan and Alex don't have any sort of cognitive abilities, or they don't exist. Never eat here.

Totally serviceable for your local Chinese joint. This place isn't going to blow you away with cutting edge culinary splendors, but it's a solid option for Americanized Chinese. The prices are reasonable, the food is good and the service was great. My boyfriend and I pass Yu Choy multiple times a week on our way to the dog park and this past weekend we finally decided to stop in for lunch. The place was a ghost town, so we were treated like royalty because I think they were just so excited to have guests in the restaurant. I think it was one of the managers that served us - he was super friendly, very attentive and made sure we had a great meal. He comped us our fried rice sides, which I thought was a nice way to make a good impression on us. Frankly, by going out of his way to thank us for stopping by and giving us that level of service, he's won himself a set of repeat customers. We'll definitely order from here again.

I order from this place to get my Chinese fix all the time. Entrees always arrive steaming hot, the food is super fresh and cooked perfectly. The veggies aren't overdone like at most Chinese places. They also usually have coupons floating around and give them to you with your order. Tasty and healthy. Some of my favorites: General Tso's Chicken (tangy sauce... fresh bell peppers... yum) Hunan Hot & Sour Soup Would highly recommend.

  • Kara B.

Solid option for late night delivery. Not great, but not terrible. Order Americanized stuff and you'll get exactly what you were hoping for. They are well packaged and delivered hot. At my door in less than 45 minutes. I'll definitely be ordering again since they have coupons so often!

Hard to find a good chinese restaurant these days, particularly if you live in the west loop. We came across Yu Choy and we love their pork and vegetable fried rice because it tastes so fresh and is not laden in soy sauce. The egg rolls are ok - not the best and certainly not the worst. Acceptable. We take our food to go.

Lunch munchies. Craving for slippery beefy wide rice noodles. Nearest dealer? Yu Choy. I ordered the beef chow how, egg rolls, and the meatless hot and sour soup, all in lunch portions. Beef chow how was great, generously sized for lunch (I had *maybe* half and will easily have lunch for tomorrow as well), and perfectly chewy/slippery. Egg rolls were your standard fatty crunchy treat. The real star was the hot and sour soup which, for just about $3, is going to be my default go-to in future, trumping the 7-11 $3.20 can of chunky beef stew I usually grab if I forget to pack lunch. Not the cheapest in town. They do lunch portions, but not lunch specials, so no entree-egg rolls-fried rice-soda deals here. Still, worth it. ETA: They may in fact do lunch specials. Call and ask. And delivery is superfast. Did I mention the egg rolls? Damn they're good. Small selection of American favorites like ribs, fried chicken and shrimp also available.

I'm pretty sure the only way I would eat here again would be on a dare. We were given the wrong menus. Our appetizers tasted like they were fried in peanut oil that George Washington Carver used. I'll admit, our main courses weren't gross...but they weren't good either. As a side note...I'm not too sure any Chinese people work there. Maybe they know something we don't. p.s. They have BBQ ribs on the menu. Not Chinese BBQ Spare Ribs...Southern BBQ Ribs. Huh?

Best wonton soup in the city. it's simple and delicious. I don't get much else but they will cook their dishes oil free if you request it which is nice if you're looking for a healthier option. delivery is always super fast and the food steaming hot.

I was in the mood for some good, old fashioned, down and dirty Chinese food - like the stuff I used to get as a kid, and happened upon Yu Choy! I was pleasantly surprised to find an evening special dinner (most of the time you are lucky to find a M-F lunch only deal). I loved my meal; the fried rice was great, too! The serving was so generous I got around 3 meals out of it. And the nice plastic take-out containers are great to use again and again! Definitely will be back!

Got food from here for the first time today. Im really weird about some meat but the general tsos here is actually pretty good. The eggrolls are nasty but the portions are great for the price.

  • Nick M.

I order take-out from Yu Choy from time to time. I finally decided that their entrees are awful, after recently ordering Chicken Lo Mein and getting some type of Chicken-hunan dish with some ramen-type noodles sporadically throughout, I decided I will no longer order from here. Not chicken lo-mein, not very good, I am sure there has to be better Chinese somewhere in Chicago. I've had their chicken and broccoli before...it is pretty bland but not awful. I do enjoy their Crab Rangoon, but their Eggrolls and dumplings are a little too "mushy".

  • Becca S.

I'm no Chinese food connoisseur, and I won't pretend to be a foodie, but Yu Choy is definitely a-ok. I work a few blocks away so I end up eating lunch there once every couple of weeks. It's quick, it's cheap, and it's tasty. I love that they offer brown rice, and their lunch portions are the perfect size for your midday meal. I wouldn't make a special trip here or order delivery for a group dinner, but you can't find a better deal in the costly neighborhood. Even the McDonald's nearby is pricey. Check it out!

  • David S.

I called these guys and asked if their shrimp tempura was actually tempura and not plain-Jane fried shrimp. Not to be a snob about it but I was really craving the Japanese style fried shrimp at the time. Got Cantonese fried shrimp instead. Got sweet and sour pork and lo mein as well. They tight seal the pork so don't expect crunchy goodness. The lo mein was unseasoned noodles with large amounts of vegetables and sparsely hidden meats.

Yu Choy is only 2 blocks from my work so on average, I'm here once a week. After a quick review of the menu, you'll probably be surprised to see BURGERS made the long and distinguished list. The multi-cuisine format may work for the Cheesecake Factory but c'mon guys, this is a downtown corner Chinese restaurant. Keep it simple and you'll have a pleasant experience. The staff is so friendly! They always know what I'll be having-- either the wonton soup or the pork pot stickers. Both are tasty. The soup's broth is somewhat bland, but the scallions and generous portion of pork-filled dumplings are what make this soup stellar. The pot stickers are great on their best day, however, sometimes they're a bit undercooked and you'll have to chew your way through a sticky, gummy consistency. Most of the time they're great, though. I've also tried the egg rolls (along with 2 fellow co-workers) and we all agreed that they were delicious! Stop by for carry-out if you're in the 'hood. Super fast, super friendly and super cheap better-than-average Chinese food.

Hot and sour soup was just alright, nothing special. General Tso's chicken was typical breaded and fried with a very oily sauce that tasted like spiced, sugared peanut oil. I ate it, but I regretted it.

Chinese food in Chicago is the absolute worst. Yes, I know that many of the places in Chinatown get good reviews, but it really shouldn't be hard for a couple of Chinese people to put together some tasty standard Americanized Chinese food at a local spot. Maybe it's because there are no Chinese people working in any of the spots? What kind of Chinese place serves pizza and Italian beefs? Yeah, pretty much all of these types of place in this city. I've gotten to the point where I only order soup and fried rice from Chinese restaurants because for whatever reason the chicken in all of these places is disgusting, the sauces in every dish are the same, and overall its so blech I don't even know why I bother. Well, I bother because I'm Jewish and from NYC and Chinese food is as important to a NYC Jew as corn beef sandwiches and matzoh ball soup hence the reason why I have to settle and I mean REALLY settle for something resembling greasy, MSG rocking goodness. OK, so Yu Choy was my go to delivery place when we lived in the loop. It was always there in like 15 minutes and I ignored how bad everything else was as the egg drop soup and pork fried rice were pretty decent. When we moved to the West Loop I looked for a place that may be equally as shitty if not a tad better and came across Jim Ching. yelp.com/biz/jim-chings-… This review is for them too, but I'll give Jim Chings two stars for the following reason: In the past four months when ordering Chinese, we've turned to Jim Ching. I stuck with egg drop soup and pork fried rice and tried a chicken dish for shits and giggles. The soup and rice were actually tasty, the chicken was disgusting. They too have pizza, french fries, and Americans working the Wok. However, a few days ago, I decided to order from Yu Choy and I realized that their soup and rice was way worse than Jim Chings which is a pretty amazing feat in and of itself. With that said, Yu Choy has been peaced out of my menu drawer and while two star restaurants aren't "my thing" - Jim Ching will have to get my business when I need the soup and rice fix. If anyone knows of any Chinese people looking to move to Chicago please let me know.

For quick, easy and delicious Chinese, Yu Choy is hands-down the best Chinese in the city. Dishes are served with many fresh vegetables, flavorful sauces, and their menu offers brown rice and states "no added MSG" - which is pretty hard to come by. Many dishes are full of fresh crunchy peppers, mini corns, mushrooms, bamboo, and water chestnuts to name a few. The restaurant space is nothing special, but their delivery service is always amazingly quick and reliable. My only "con" I can think of for Yu Choy is that they sometimes over-fry dishes. I love the General Tso's Chicken and Governor's Chicken, but they can be tough at times. Egg rolls too. Favorite Dishes: Hot and Sour Soup Hunan Beef (excellent; I get this every time) General Tso's Chicken (delicious sauce + flavor) Governor's Chicken (love the added broccoli) Chicken Two Delight (the black mushrooms are awesome) Again, nothing over the top, but a solid choice for delicious delivery that's pretty healthy and won't break the bank (they have some good coupons online and on their menus).

I wish there were negative stars. Yes, it was that bad. Terrible, in fact, to contradict other reviews I've seen here that totally mislead me into trying it. Oh, where to start. I'll start with the menu item they refer to as "lo mein" but was definitely more like something my Grandma, bless her soul, as a school cafeteria cook in the 50's, would have considered to be "Chinese" food. They used strange little white glass noodles - not what you expect when you get lo mein. The meat that came in the noodles was the stereotypical "mystery" meat. I am not sure if it was chicken or pork, but I am certain it was DISGUSTING. I think they fried it a week or two ago. So it was cold and slimey. I had a hard time not spitting it out after a bite. I have a strong stomach and have never had a food-borne illness, but this dish challenged me. I seriously considered vomiting it up. I was concerned that it wasn't safe to ingest. The other dish we ordered was the general tso's chicken, and it was less offensive. Still not particularly tasty or fresh. Also, they forgot to bring the crab rangoon we ordered, which is 50% of why I love going for "Chinese" food. Oh, and they were out of hot tea. Isn't that a staple at a "Chinese" restaurant? Really? It's like a bar that runs out of beer, or BK running out of the whopper. For those of you who liked this place, I truly feel bad if this is what you consider to be good Chinese food. It's so not. Having lived in other parts of the country I've been fortunate to experience really good and even sometimes, AUTHENTIC Chinese restaurants, and unfortunately, this place gives a bad name to the whole genre. Please please PLEASE - do NOT waste your time here. I can't suggest a better Chinese alternative in the neighborhood because I can't find one. But don't come here. If I find a better place I'll let you know. I really do want to find a local mom 'n pop neighborhood kind of place to satisfy my rangoon cravings. Oh, Big Bowl (I know, it's a chain), is pretty decent. They are into the organic and sustainable thing so that's a plus. You at least know where your meat came from and aren't left wondering what that mystery meat is you've just consumed.

Consistently good food, and on-time delivery. I first heard about this a few years ago when a place I was working frequently got deliveries from this place. It's relatively quick if you don't call ahead, and if you do, it's always ready. The fried rice, crab rangoon, and orange chicken are very good. As someone else said, there aren't earth-shattering innovations there, but for basic Chinese food it's good. I do wish they had more entrees that equally combined meat and veggies, though. The orange chicken, for instance, while delicious, has almost no vegetable content.

Super friendly, very quick service (I got takeout) and delicious! The szechwan green beans are amazing - I added beef and it is delicious!

When the Tsang on Wells closed for some reason, this is where the orders came from and they were always decent, until recently. Very recently. I've ordered the Mongolian Beef a thousand times and the last few, its been blech. The last time, it went straight to the garbage. Not even an argument could save it. The quality of the meat is really compromised. And no fortune cookie.

Food was what I expected, cheap, fast chinese food. The resturant could use a little updating but the food was actually A-ok!

I ordered the chicken lo mein and it was exactly what the previous review said...something a lunch lady thought it would be like. Wonton soup was gross, chicken fried rice was weird and every time I've eaten it, I've gotten sick. Had to throw it out, waste of money.

So disappointing. My boyfriend and I moved to Chicago in August and we have been on a quest to find good chinese delivery since then. So far, we have had terrible luck, and Yu Choy was no exception. The experience started off poorly with the guy on the phone being rude to my boyfriend - maybe that should have tipped us off as to what was to come. I will say, they got here promptly, well under the hour wait time they had quoted us. But that is the beginning and end of the good things I have to say. We started with the vegetable pot stickers: ick, mushy, no flavor. My boyfriend got the egg rolls (I'm a vegetarian) and took just one bite before tossing them. For my entree, I had the Szechwan Vegetable Delight - I was excited because the description made it sound spicy and flavorful (my main issue with the other places we have ordered from has been the incredible level of blandness). The actual thing was just eh. No real spice to speak of and there was so little sauce that most of the veggies were completely tasteless, not to mention rubbery. Blah, all around. My boyfriend got the chicken and broccoli - a "house special" that says it is going to come in their "very own special sauce." There was absolutely no sauce whatsoever, and the chicken was plain and bland. He had to dump tons of soy sauce on it just to eat a few bites. Needless to say, this will be added to our growing list of Chinese places NOT to order from again.

We were in search of any open food establishment on New Year's Day. We drove around in circles, researched YELP on our smart phones, however could not find any location open. After about 30 minutes we found Yu Choy! There was one other patron when we walked in. Naturally it being a holiday we thought nothing of it. The dining room looked a bit unkempt. I ordered the Sweet and Sour Chicken and it was very tasteless. I took two bites and I was done!! The restrooms were dirty. Ugh!!

I haven't eaten here. I'm not going to either. Why then, you might ask, am I posting a review. Take a look at the photo I've added. Taken while driving past the side of Yu Choy on Ohio Street.

I have to be completely honest. I live very close to Yu Choy, and I still can't bring myself to go in there. I have never had anything better than pretty horrible chinese food from there. I feel bad for rating them poorly, as the staff is truly friendly (which is why I give them even the one star) ... But if this is the last real restaurant open in my neighborhood, and I absolutely have to eat...I will walk to Mickey D's. I have no recommendations, other than to avoid it, until they take some pointers from Friendship or Moon Palace.

I wish I had the option to rate this place under one star. I haven't been here in about a year and a half after my last experience put me in the emergency room. So the thing is, I'm allergic to shellfish so I have to be careful to order veggie egg rolls, which I always do. One day I order my food from this place and get veggie egg rolls with it. They arrive in about 45 minutes and I'm about half way done with the first egg roll and I notice there is shrimp in there. The first thing I do is open up the rest of the egg roll to make sure I am in fact eating a shrimp egg roll. The next thing I do is call the restaurant and talk with the manager who tells me there is no way it is a shrimp egg roll....Hey dip-sh!t, I know what a piece of shrimp looks like. He proceeded to tell me I was wrong and never even offered any assistance or to comp my meal. By this time I was a little worried since I didn't have an eppi-pen so I had to take a cab to the hospital. Basically, I spent $500 for the worst meal of my life and even got to deal with probably the worst restaurant manager in the city of Chicago. I will never spend another $1 at this place and really should just file a law suit against them to recoup some of the money I had to spend on hospital bills.

Service was slow; food was priced for the quantity that you receive. I wouldn't go back. Orange chicken tasted like chicken with syrup and hot sauce.

You might say that I am a bit addicted to Chinese food and am always in the search for the best one...I am pretty sure I found a great one in Yu Choy! Quick, friendly service and their fried rice is fantastic. A great find in the River North area - highly recommend!

We ordered Yu Choy last night for delivery. We got Chicken/Beef fried rice. We were blown away by the amount of food we received in our boxes. It was piping hot and very fresh and had a good golden brown fried rice look to it. It tasted good and better than most Chinese places in Lincoln Park. It was a very balanced fried rice (right amount of everything, especially the chicken). I will order again from this place.

Food is pretty servicable as far as local carryout joints go. General Tso's chicken had a crispy but not too thick crust. Sauce had a nice vinegar bite with the freshness of ginger slivers. There was a very weird taste in my mouth after eating - probably the frying grease wasn't so fresh. Still, am rating 3 stars for A OK because it's probably the only place in River North where you can pay $10 and eat at a cozy corner table surrounded by large windows on both walls, and in quietude watch the cars and people go by.

I love this place! Not sure why the horrible reviews. I always order the same thing although I have been adventurous here in the past. Love the Shrimp Egg Foo Young and the Crab Rangoons. Also love how fast they deliver. Some of my favorite Chinese in the city.

  • Donnie C.

No big deal -- at all. Fried rice dry & ordered with extra sprouts (forgotten & just placed on top). Egg roll were thin and ingredients undistinguishable. Very little meat in either; less than competition. Nice people, but sub-par/sad quality. Won't be back.

I am sad to say I am still looking for a good Chinese food place in Chicago. I didn't feel like cooking and was craving some Chinese. I knew Yu Choy was close by so I decided to place an order. I ordered crab rangoon, orange chicken, Vegetable fried rice and Egg Foo Young. I was very disappointed in all of my choices. Why didn't anyone tell me you can mess up Crab Rangoon? I guess no one told me because they didn't know either. On to the orange chicken, definitely can't mess that up, right? The Orange Chicken was bland and mushy as was the rice. The highlight of the meal was the egg foo young and even that wasn't very good. Overall I give Yu Choy two stars, it is not the absolute worst Chinese but it is definitely not the best. I am disappointed not just by the mediocre Chinese food Yu Choy provides but I am also disappointed that I can't seem to find a good take-out Chinese place in Chicago. What is the deal with that? Ugh

Ok, so I DID ask for American Chinese food. And that's what I got. Don't expect real chinese food or gourmet chinese food, but considering the price and amount of food I got, this place is decent. I don't know how much other people eat, but I can seriously get at least 4-5 meals out of one order (delivery too!). The delivery came quickly and I live about 8 blocks away, in fact less than the expected time. The egg rolls were... nothing special. I'd say pass. The General Tso's Chicken - I asked for it with broccoli instead of bell peppers which they did do. The Chicken comes separately - interesting concept. Kind of a weird vinegar-y after taste but overall ok. The Shrimp Lo Mein - first time I ever had lo mein with thin egg noodles instead of thick noodles, but, whatever... it had a decent amount of actual food i.e. shrimp, veges. Overall: not great, not bad, if I am starving again and want take-out, I would definitely still consider this place

So most of the Chinese food in Chicago is easy to hate, but I can't hate this place. It's too... okay. Besides being reasonably priced and fresh, they don't mind making ingredient substitutions and manage to keep the orders straight. 3 stars for that alone. There are little bonuses, too. For example, you can get just about anything steamed (rather than fried). Or you can get a beef, fries and cannoli. It's a junk food free-for-all. The vegetarian section of the menu is pretty extensive by itself, but since they also substitute tofu for any meat, there are a lot of choices. Chinscratcher: If you eat in, your portions are large enough to feed three people. If you carry out, they're appropriate for one person. The place is kinda beat with little atmosphere, but I can always count on hearing some Milli Vanilli while waiting to carry out.

After a couple of pints I decided to make my way to the lovely brown line (grrr....) and it hit me that I was starving. My stomach had had enough. ANY kind of sustenance would due at that point. "MMMM CHINESE", my stomach screamed as we passed Yu Choy. Hmm...the person behind the counter was so flippant I imagined this going through her head, "la la, tra la la". I ordered the Beef and Broccoli. Eh. The sauce was a little slimey, but the vegetables were cooked perfect and the beef was tender. The rice was a little overcooked and rather mushy. Can't say I would come back here.

I ordered from Yu Choy yesterday, as I was in the mood for greasy Chinese food after a long day/night of drinking. I waivered over 2 or 3 stars, but I'm giving it 3 stars for a few reasons: they were earlier than what was expected, the food was super hot when it got to me (I had to wait a good 10 minutes before I could even try the soup!), it's cheap, and most importantly, it was the greasy Chinese I wanted. I ordered a few things for variety and to have as leftovers: chicken fried rice, lo mein, and egg drop soup. All were good (again, not great, but good), and the portions were enormous. The soup alone was enough to feed 10 people. Now, if you're looking for truly good Asian cuisine, this is most definitely not the place for you. But to cure a hangover? I welcome you, Yu Choy!

  • Natasha M.

Yu Choy has a very convenient location. The price is amazing. I wouldn't call it an authentic Chinese food, me being Chinese myself. The taste is still pretty good for the price you pay. My boyfriend ordered a plate of fried wanton. There were 10 of them and only costs around $2.50. I ordered a $3 egg drop soup and it was as big as 2 meals for a whole family or 2. The entree plates, however, is not that big. I must say that not all dishes here are good, but there are some pretty good ones. Don'ts: 1. Duck 2. BBQ Pork 3. Other cured meats Dos: 1. Fried rice plates 2. Orange/Sesame Chicken 3. Soup

A hotel concierge said it was open for another twenty minutes. I got there in five and had to bang on the door for a while to be let in. I should have just walked away. This is the worst Chinese food in Chicago. I couldn't finish the Crab Rangoon because it had some strange pepper taste that's not supposed to be in the dish. The Pot Stickers were mushy and the Egg Rolls had peanut butter in them for whatever reason. AVOID

The only thing worse about Yu Choy than the gawdawful food is the music they choose to noise pollute Wells St. with. What does hip-hop have to do with (bad) Chinese food, eh Mr. Choy? What are you trying to tell us? Are you compensating for gastronomic terrible-ness by providing passers-by a little bit of way-too-loud Fall Out Boy? Hoping to drown out the groans of indigestion-riddled diners with some Beyonce? Working on improving your culinary skills to the beats of Rhianna? I seriously doubt that last one is true, so please, turn the music down and concentrate on not sucking.

I can make better shrimp with lobster sauce! Theirs was shrimp with lobstery liquid made out of orange juice and bbq sauce plus water. Worst Chinese food I have ever had and I am almost 37 years old.

Good, solid Chinese food. The service is fast and friendly and the prices are reasonable. The food is acceptable, though not extraordinary. I tend to order the spicy garlic broccoli and vegetable fried rice and both of these dishes are decent.

Not bad food at all. Perfect for those nights were you want to stay home and order out. I had the General TSO's chicken and Hot&Sour soup, both were delicious.

I'm kind of leary of take out restaurants that offer a multi international menu but regardlessI have ordered delivery from Yu Choy for work a few times. Egg rolls are good, fried rice is okay. Not the greatest chinese food but certainly not the worst. Fast and friendly delivery.

Not bad, but not good. My food was way over salted. Howard's was actually pretty good. Egg roll was tasty. Service was ok. If you work in the area, I would try it for lunch. I def. would not go out of my way to try their food.

I can't believe the reviews on this place so far. I love Yu Choy! I always get the chicken or beef fried rice, but my friends also really like the Kung Pao and the Sweet and Sour Chicken. They lose a star from me b/c deliver takes about an hour no matter when i order, and i only live 8 blocks away and they refuse to keep my information on computer. (maybe i shouldn't be lazy and get take-out, but i can't handle the winters here). But the food is always hot when it gets here and so yummy! My out of town friends ask to order from here when they are in town. Maybe my expectations aren't that high for a downtown area chinese place, but i really recommend them.

This is singularly the worst Chinese food I have ever had. Top-to-bottom everything was less than edible (many other colorful expressions are bursting out of my typing fingers, but I shall leave it there). We should have known from the empty restaurant but it was cold tonight and we did not feel like walking any further and were really in the mood for Chinese. Ah, but for the wisdom of crowds. You people who give this over 2 stars either think canned Chinese food is viable alternative or you have seriously blighted palates.

If you're going to eat here, try going inside and sitting at the actual place, rather than ordering out... my boyfriend and I made the mistake of ordering from here and it arrived cold, soggy, and disgusting... you may have better luck actually goin in the restaurant but if you're in the mood for chinese i can definitely think of better places...

I really want to like this place. It's convenient, quick and reasonably priced, but everything tastes the same! I've ordered a half dozen different dishes and they're all the same mix of veggies in the same sauce. It's ok for mediocre Chinese, but not any better than that.

  • K M.

I have eaten in at this place and that experience was pretty good, I'm sure I had Kung Pao chicken because I don't get Chinese very often, and when I do, its because Kung Pao is what I'm craving. Take out is not quite as good, not even that it was cold or anything when I got it, something was just different, and not in a good way, a little bland maybe. Still tasty enough though! As I would think a little hole in the wall would have to be bettter at take out, they can't get 4 stars. But if you live closeby, I would recommend it, I just stumbled on it one day and was pleasantly surprised.

This place has the best Chinese food that I have had. The staff is very friendly and you don't have to wait too long to get your food. The food is delicious, especially the Empress Tofu. The sauces to me taste different and better than other Chinese food places. It is a great lunch spot.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
