The quality of the food here is pretty poor. I went here with my roommates despite the already bad rating this place had because we moved in right around the corner and thought we'd try it due to it's convenience. Sadly, we won't be going back. The prices are fair, but it won't be hard to find another hole in the wall Chinese Restaurant with the same prices and better food. I had the chicken fried rice and an egg roll. The filling of the egg roll was bland and tasteless, and the "chicken" in my fried rice was rubbery and, well, bland. My roommates had the vegetable lo mein and the shrimp foo young, and they were both pretty upset with how bad their dishes were. I wanted this place to be good since I live so close. I mean, if there's one place I want to live within walking distance of, it's a Chinese restaurant, but it's just no good. I do not recommend.

This place served the worst Chinese food I've ever had. I had high hopes because I lived a block away. Even mediocre food would have earned them a decent amount of my business due to convenience but it's just awful. Stringy & fatty meats, over sugared sauces, and bland flavors. All that's bad enough, but there were also two staff members plucking each other's eyebrows behind the counter. I can only imagine what they do when they're not able to be seen by customers. Stay away!

It is pink heaven inside. A casual spot replete with pink vinly tablecloths, pink walls (where there aren't mirrors) traditional decorations, and silk flowers. Pleasantly suprised by the food- for the "Cheap Chinese" genre it is quite good. Egg rolls are great- not the bubbly kind of wrappers but the ones I associate with Thai egg rolls. I have tried broccoli with tofu, chicken with ginger, carrots and broccoli- all were great. No msg by request. All in all a cute and quirky mom and pop type place- plus I always get a great fortune!

This was far and away the worst Chinese food I have ever eaten. I ordered BBQ pork fried rice and opened the carton to find it full of grey bits of meat. The rice tasted rotten and the meat inside it definitely looked like it was spoiled. I wound up throwing almost the entire carton away, and spent the rest of the evening worrying that I might get sick from eating the little bit that I did. The lady at the counter was very nice, but I can't justify ever ordering from this place again, no matter how nice the people are. The food is, quite simply, foul.

Why would they give me ketchup for my fried wontons???? I may be white but I am from San Francisco and know that wontons are never served with anything!! Thought it was hot sauce because it was red but...it's....ketchup?!?! The noodles in the combo noodle soup are hard, the shrimp is soft, and they said that they never give hot sauce on the side. What place thEse days doesn't serve hot sauce on the side for a hot noodle soup? If this place wants to make money besides skimping out on quality for profit they would profit a lot better and not lose their business if they were actually any good and stayed with the times instead of insulting our taste buds and intelligence. Never wanted to go here and I never will again. Do not waste your money or time. Looking forward to some form of food poisoning tomorrow.

The best chinese place in chicago. I believe. The eggs rolls are to die for. The orange chicken, the chow suey, the combination rice, the vegetable stew is amazing. .

There are many options on the Van Phat menu, yet very few good ones at that. First time visiting, and probably the last time. I ordered the Singapore rice noodles ($8.75), beef & shrimp combo. My friend had the lunch special (Beef Subgum) with egg roll and option of plain or shrimp fried rice. Laden with MSG, we definitely felt it afterwards. My noodles wasn't the traditional thin white rice vermicelli noodles-instead, slightly crispy yellow thin noodles that were super salty. For the price, not worth the spike of sodium intake. The lady behind the counter was nice, and she gave us free hot Jasmine tea and a bottle of water. But this isn't enough for me to come back, sorry.

The food and the people at Van Phat are great. That's all that needs to be said. They deliver to you, they have cheap Chinese food, and it's of cheap Chinese food quality. Awesome, just what I paid for. You see, I'm not a snob when it comes to Chinese food and when looking for appropriate reviews for what you searched for, I hope this one comes out on top. Good luck, eat well.

I ordered take out from here not too long ago. It was my first time trying food from Van Phat, and I knew it was more of a Chinese Dive than a nice Chinese restaurant, but I have had decent Chinese foods from slop shops before and expected this place to be about the same. I was very disappointed. On the upside, the people working there were friendly and my food was ready when they said it would be. On the downside, the food was terrible! I have never seen such god awful food in my life. The meat in all the dishes were barely cooked, colorless, flavorless strips of mystery meat that is likely from the alley rats outside the restaurant. The fried rice was terrible, the sweet and sour sauce unbearable, and the crab rangoon was a tasteless puff of cream cheese with no trace of crab. The egg rolls were greasy and totally unappetizing. We ended up throwing away most of what we ordered because we just couldn't stomach it. I do not recommend this place. Very surprised it is still in business.

I cannot believe some of the reviews about Van Phat. People, what do you expect when you go to a hole in the wall asian food place? If you want Japonais, go to Japonais. If you want cheap but decent Chinese food, go to some place like Van Phat. You should avoid places that appear dirty or serve questionable meat with awful flavors, Van Phat is not that place. Evidenced by nothing but the MENU, Van Phat provides what the establishment clearly intends to offer: affordably tasty Chinese carryout (Note: "tasty" was qualified by "affordably," Van Phat clearly works within a budget in this department and you benefit from it). So, no, 1 or 2 star rater, your beef lo mein is probably not going to contain medium rare tenderloin marinated in a from-scratch marinade using the freshest of ingredients for the sauce. Why would you order beef at a place like this anyway? What is this, Cheap Chinese Food amateur hour? Let's call this review Cheap Chinese 101: you order something with chicken or veggie, request no MSG, and modify it until you like it. For those of us on Yelp that can properly gauge our expectations and may want a good sized portion of reasonably tasty, cheap carryout merely sprinkled with seasoning (i.e. - not wanting to pay for dishes that are marinated/in a from-scratch sauce), please stop bringing decent establishments down because you went there one time and had no idea what you were doing. Because sometimes Yelp is like giving a monkey razorblades, I would normally rate this place a "4" but have decided to give it a moron weighting of "5." *drops mic*

Van Phat. Yes! Born and raised in Chicago on Chinese restaurants! This is one of the best in my opinion. Ginger Chicken is insane, and my all time fav go to, Shrimp Kow, is done exactly as i remember it the first time I had the dish when i was two, back in 1910! I'll keep coming back! As it was in the good ole days for me at Linn's Garden (RIP), the staff is friendly, and always want to give you a free can of pop! Service is fast, and the food is cheap!

The decor is fabulously tacky and the space very clean. Egg Fooyung and egg rolls were delicious, and the staff was very sweet. It's a no frills chinese place and it tries to be nothing more, which is fabulous! I'll be back for sure.

On my first visit I tried the Kung-Pao Shrimp and let's just say they forgot the pow (pao). I gave it a second shot and took a more Americanized approach, fried chicken and rice. The wings were quite small and overcooked, but the rice was fairly decent. This isn't the worst I've had, but I'll only go here if I have a craving for fried rice.

What the hell is going on here? Have I been given special treatment for some reason? A secret menu perhaps? I have never gotten food from Van Phat that was anything short of a fantastic meal. Yes, it is what I would call 'slop house' Chinese food. Don't bother comparing it to Friendship. You're not paying for ambiance so ambiance you shall not get. Unless you are into 1950's vintage decor. Which I am. I've ordered from Van Phat four times and it has been consistently delicious. I have only ordered vegetable and chicken dishes so I can't attest for the red meat or seafood. But what I have ordered was always tasty, hot and a heaping plateful.

I've eaten here at least once a week for the last year and I have to defend it from the bad reviews! The hot & sour soup and fried rice are my favorite & the lunch deals cannot be beat. It's always been very clean inside & the staff are very friendly!

Friendly service and good chinese food without being too greasy. Of course not as good as Chinatown but better than I had anticipated.

This is secretly one of the best chinese food places in the area. They've definitely improved with age, and kept their tacky charm. Everything is really inexpensive, think NYC cheap. They make some of the best shrimp fried rice i've ever tried. I think I'm falling in love with the staff!

Chinese I think i will be careful ordering seafood here, haven't yet, i am just saying.... place does smell and not from the food. Service is ok, very quiet, i had the crab rangoon, very tasty , it had to be for the price i paid..... 3 only, then i got some noodles pasta..... don't know .... trying to for get it. Probably this place is good for a low budget people, i really tried, really. But i don't think i will return, they don't have bubble tea, and those are my favorites.

I thought this place was alright. Friend and I were the only customers. We were just wondering around the neighborhood and decided that 'americanized chinese' actually sounded yummy. Service was odd...yeah that's the word...odd. But still friendly. Food was great portion size and decent. I think I would like this place for delivery. Super cheap!

I just moved to the Logan Square area and my friends brought me over to Van Phat for lunch on a Sunday. It's a very old school joint. I didn't feel that it looked dirty or smelled bad. Maybe I was lucky. There was another table besides us dining which was a rather large party. A young waitress was overseeing tables. I don't know how service is here overall but she either could have a) used some help or b) checked up on the tables a bit more. It took awhile to get our beverages (around 10 minutes) and I asked for a pitcher of water because I was afraid it would be awhile before she would check on us again. We ordered the Egg Rolls, Shrimp Sour Soup with Straw Mushroom, Fried Spicy Beef, Egg Foo Young and Combination Fried Rice. The Egg Rolls were okay. The soup was a broth and the shrimp was fresh. I didn't feel scared to eat it. The Egg Foo Young was in a nice gravy. I would definitely order that again. It's hard to screw up Fried Rice. It was good. The Fried Spicy Beef was actually not that spicy. I would definitely order that again but ask for it to be very spicy. I have been advised to NOT order any of the sesame dishes. I don't know why but just don't. All the dishes are made to order so be patient. You aren't going to be in and out of this place as I believe there is only one cook. The Lunch Special is an awesome price - $5.25. I like that the take out menu has a typo that says "Free can of pop or BATTLE water." AWESOME! I want battle water! My life would probably be 10x more extreme! As everyone else is saying, it's cheap. Seafood is said to be their specialty so I'd say take a chance if you like seafood. I'm pretty nervous when it comes to eating seafood and I felt totally fine afterward. It's good to support local businesses!

I have been coming to Van Phat since I was a very young kid (I would say about 4yrs old) and I'm now 23. That's a pretty freakin' long time if you ask me. Yes they could hire another server but overall the service is great. Food is cheap and delicious, my family and I have been eating here for 18+ years and not once have we ever gotten sick (maybe we have tough stomachs, HA!). I also introduced this place to my boyfriend (who is a pretty picky eater) and it's the only place he'll go to now for Chinese food. I'm a vegetarian so I usually get the broccoli and tofu dish which is delicious and the fried rice is GREAT! All the vegetarian dishes they offer here are pretty damn good. If you're looking for a fancy schmancy place, this isn't your spot but if you want good food at an affordable price with well-mannered service then this is your joint. Oh and as many times as I've been here it's never smelled as bad as some of these reviewers say. However, the atmosphere is defiantly out dated. They've had the same decorations since I was 4! But that shouldn't matter.

The sesame chicken had so much breading on it and it tasted like it had been fried at a county fair...very greasy. I wont be going back. My fiance however thought the tofu and veggies was good.

I forgot to post this months ago... I love 90 degree days, but sometimes even I almost get a little too hot. This happen today walking home from the Blue-line El whilst craving some "East meets Harlem". Yea you guested it, I wanted some Chinese Ghetto Chicken Wings fried hard! Van Phat Chinese restaurant on Kimball, seemed to meet the ghetto litmus test. But I wanted Harlem Ghetto, with an old Chinese dude yelling from behind a bullet proof window. Not Logan Square ghetto! At one table someone spilled a grape soda that had yet to be cleaned up. The whole place was "Dur-tey" and smelled awful! A smacking sound (reminiscent of zombies feeding),drew my attention to a a gargantuanly obese Mexican women eating a burrito that looked like and was the size of a small alligator that sadly ended up as road kill. As she ripped into the the burrito, she sat mesmerized, watching a telenovela TV show featuring, as they always do a blond blue eyed slender women heroine. When a commercial came on, she looked up at me,tried but failed to hold in a belche, licked each of her stubby finger tips loudly, wiped them on her grease stained smock, smiled warmly, and said "your the first customer all day! look at a the menu, place your order and I'll get back in the kitchen during the next commercial. Are you gonna eat here or take out?" "No ma'am, I'm just gonna take a menu home." said I. You know it's bad when you can't even bring yourself to order chicken wings! I bet Van Phat is probably looking down from "T'ien-ming" wondering why he sold his Restaurant to her! Van Damme Van Phat No way, No Thanks!

if you're looking to chance a bout of food poisoning or to experience the culinary delight of having a mystery-meat dinner; then this is the place for you. so this restaurant is less than a block away from my apartment and i had the audacity to give this a go, even though my brain pleaded, "DON'T DO IT DUDE, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, DON'T DO IT!!!" i mean, the exterior and the interior of the building is inexplicably scary. i ordered the chicken fried rice because i earnestly thought that it was a dish that one could least mess up on. well the meat tasted like grade-d chicken that was frozen years ago. and after suffering wicked freezer burn, boiled back to a weird rubbery consistency. i don't think I could ever try eating here again, even if it was free and i was coming off a week-long fast.

My wife and I ate here three times -- proof that we're gluttons for punishment. I can't put my taste buds precisely on it, but the food tastes 'off.' The atmosphere is dark, sloppy and sticky. On the plus side, it is cheap. But so is dog food. If you want good Chinese food, eat at Friendship around the corner on Milwaukee.

I'll be straight up: Van Phat kinda sucks. But this doesn't mean you shouldn't try it-- just know that it's a Chinese food dive. I suggest you do NOT do carry out or dine in. The dining room feels dirty, smells odd, and has a really bad overall ambiance. Plus the lady that runs the place always seems like she's stressed out. The food itself is hit or miss-- the first time we tried it, it was great, but the second time was horrible. But it's mad cheap. So balance that out and make your own decision. If you're willing to spend a few more ducats, Friendship is right around the corner...

I went here for carry out.. while they made our food we had soups. Mine was wonton-pretty good. My bf ordered the hot and sour, she brought the wrong one first, then when he got what he ordered he hated it. He said it was disgusting and felt bad when he didnt eat it all.. So we got our food and headed home. Starving i dug into my sesame chicken that i was looking forward to. The brocolli was good but the sesame chicken was absolutely horrible! It was like jelly sauce and tasted sooo weird. I couldnt even eat it, i threw it out. My bf said it was bad too... we never really complain, as we are both servers and understand the food industry well but my god, this shit was gross!! haha, hopefully it was just an accident

This is the worst Chinese food restaurant ever! Not only is it expensive, the Orange Chicken was basically small pieces of chicken surrounded by some stale breading, which was actually hard to eat. At least three pieces were just breading that was burnt in the middle. The sauce was ridiculously bland, which I assumed was a standard, ordered in large tubs. I will actively make sure no one I know ever comes here.

The food at this neighborhood location is fair. The portions are large (enough to share in my opinion.) Service problems, however, are the plague of this place: I will let the occasional incorrect phone order slide because I know it's difficult to understand ... but approximately 1 of 3 orders I've placed is incorrect on arrival - completely different entree. (I have no experience with ordering on site - this may be fine.) Additionally - you're going to want to take cash ... long story, but let's just say you aren't going to want to wait for any sort of credit card transaction. Help will most likely be required from all corners of the restaurant for that. Overall - good food, when you can get the right order. The place could really do some serious business in an area that could use a few more places.

The first time I went there- the food was edible and slightly good. The second time I went back- the food was again...edible, but not good at all. The third time I went there- the food, can't even be catergorized as food, I did not eat it and could of puked. If forced to eat there again, i would not get ANY type of meat. I'd stick to the vegetables and risk getting e.coli from them then the meat. The food is cheap- and we all know there is a priced paid somewhere, for cheap food.

  • C. Benjamin W.

Other reviewers have mentioned that the food is hit or miss. I can attest to that. The first time I went, I was ready to recommend it to friends. Last time though, it was atrocious. I think the cook in the back is either drunk and getting recipes wrong, or doesn't clean his utensils between dishes. I ordered the sesame chicken the first time and got a pretty decent dish. The second time, I could clearly taste bitter orange rhine. I'm pretty forgiving with Chinese food because I don't eat it often, but bitter sesame chicken is gross.

There are 2 archetypes in Chinese food: The highbrow, and the "American-style." Sometimes you want to get something fancy, and sometimes all you want is some egg foo-yung and a Pepsi. Van Phat has fairly solid, workmanlike American-style Chinese food. Don't expect anything like "atmosphere" or "nutrition." Van Phat does one thing, and they do it well: cheap, fried Chinese food that comes with a free can of pop.

I get take-out from here often because it's really close to me. Sometimes the food is a little off, but most of the time it is good. Very cheap, especially the lunch specials. I like the Hunan chicken, and the wonton soup.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
