You can get a Jack & Coke + an IPA for $8. On a weekend. You can also get a pitcher of beer for $7.00-$12.00, also on a weekend. Ding ding ding, we have a winner! Beyond that, the staff is great, the drinks are strong, and the walls are all wood-paneled. What more could you want from a neighborhood bar?

This place is awesome. I was pleasantly surprised to pay $4 for a Half Acre on draft. It has a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. I'll be back.

Great little townie bar! Cheap drinks that are well made. I'm originally from Wisconsin and the vibe there reminded me of the places I used to go back home to just chill and hang out. Will definitely be back!

Great service, price, and atmosphere. It is a local watering hole that some may call a dive that provides a nice place to go for a drink.

I love this bar more than life itself. No hipsters, no trixies, no dude-bros. Amazing drink specials, Liz Phair, Dead Kennedys and the Dollyrots on the Juke box and I've even witnessed a Tori Amos sing along while two guys argue loudly about the cubs. A clean woman's bathroom, a 65 year old guy who taught me how to box and best of all totally GLBT friendly. see you there EVERY weekend.

Love this little gem... went by tonight and the place was boarded up. I hope it's not permanent!!

"Hey Ang. Wanna go to this bar up by my new apartment? Best people watching ever." "Duh." So that's how I ended up at Time Out. Now, to be honest, I wouldn't say it's the best people watching ever. It's a dive bar, which brings out the locals who want to drink and hang out in an establishment where it's socially acceptable to wear sweatpants. Like, real sweatpants. I liked it because I much prefer a dive over a fancy bar any time. I'm also down with any place I can wear comfy pants without being shamed. Time Out has busted, rickety bar stools, a pool table, kind of a cool juke box, TVs that broadcast the Bulls playoff games (no sound, though) and friendly enough bartenders. If this is your kind of thing, Time Out is your kind of bar. Drink prices are pretty non-offensive, too. I think a High Life set me back $3. Street parking is a breeze and it's right off the Brown Line. Do it.

I am giving this place three stars, but will do my best to go back again and give it another shot. I was there on reopening night and it was a bit of a madhouse. The inside looked super nice, and smelled all fresh and new. Bonus. Downfall, they didn't update their beer list on the wall and pretty much every beer I wanted they didn't have. I completely understand that they just reopened and not everything was in stock, but the dude I talked to got a liiiiiiitle snippy with me, which I wasn't cool with. The bartenders, well at least one, was running around like a madwoman trying to wait on everyone. The other didn't really jump in to help until it got insanely busy and even then she did her best to ignore me while I waited to close my tab. Not the friendliest person ever, but maybe that's the charm of this bar. Hm. At about midnight I began to zonk out and called myself a cab via Hailo, and went on my way....except for the horde of men outside the door smoking who heckled me as i walked away. That was kind of annoying.

I have walked by this "Dive Bar" hundreds of times, but until last evening I have not frequented this fine establishment. My lovely wife, to be perfectly honest, was scared to go in, or even in the vicinity....yeah yeah, I know!?!? After getting the wifey liquored up at Flemings, I decided to pursuade her to be adventurous and check out the Time Out bar for after Valentine's Dinner drinks. Yes, I am true romantic, taking the wifey to this bar on this stupid fucking cupid day holiday:) Upon entering, the jukebox was blaring Brett Michaels....yes! I, proceed to sit at the bar, and tell the bartender I'll take a Hangar One martini "straight up." With a perplexed look, she didn't know how to respond. I, being the sarcastic asshole that I am, told her I was just joshing her...."give me a Bell's draft." She didn't find my sarcasm humerous. Oh well? Now that the liquor masked my wife's fear, and she realized that there was no imminent threats, she started to like this dive. We met several patrons who were all very friendly, and one even had her dog running freely throughout the bar. How cool is this place when you can take your dog inside. Honestly, this will probably be a new late-night hangout for me...very cool patrons, dog friendly, and a plethera of Brett Michaels tunes on the jukebox. How does it get any better than this? Oh wait, 5 Bell's drafts, and the wifey's 3 Miller Lite drafts for only $23.00. No food, but they do allow you to order in from other restaurants.

Where should we go today? Ummmm the bar with the Old Style sign (cause there isn't a name on the outside...)? YES! Spent my first day here for the Kentucky Derby... Walked in and it was just two other girlfriends and I. That changed pretty quickly because these locals like the Derby and drinking inexpensive booze. Hmmm, so I do. I think I have new friends! They let us join in on there "pick a number from the pitcher for $2" bet. Anywho, super friendly staff... clean place (except the bathroom has one of those gross recyclable hand towels that I won't touch), inexpensive strong drinks, great patrons.

Oh, Time Out, how do I love thee? I almost hesitate to write a glowing review because I love that you're tucked away and usually pretty quiet, that my wife and I can grab a spot at the bar most any night, that the beer selection is good and the prices are GREAT, and that the crowd is totally down to earth and friendly. But you deserve a great review, even it helps draw more people here and makes it a little extra crowded. I have faith that you will maintain your charm, that you will always feel like the neighborhood bar where everybody may not know your name, but they're glad to see you walk in.

  • Christina K.

I see it as less of a sports bar, and more of a hipster dive. There are far too few TVs to classify it as a sports bar to me. The price is right, there's dollar pool, and overall friendly patrons and service. Can't complain about $7 pitchers in Chicago.

I really like this place! It's such a friendly and inviting bar. It reminds me of the Bend (a dive bar from a long time ago) without the crazy bartender. The bartender was so sweet and nice and the regulars were funny. I like that it's not too dark in there. It's refreshing. The pool table is smaller than regulation which works in my favor since I suck at pool but a smaller table means I'll have a better chance to get a few balls in. I had fun shooting pool with the hubby and then a nice gent challenged us for a game which made me feel special. He kicked our/my butt but it was lots of fun. A show broke out towards the end of the night, amateur wrestling between two buddies. It too was fun to watch, mmm, men having their shirts torn off for the cost of a Stella; way cool! All in all, I enjoyed myself. I'm hoping my hubby too enjoyed himself and wasn't just acting and will be willing to make this place our regular hang out. Only time will tell if this will be the place where everybody knows our name... Cheers to Time Out.

This place rules. Dive bar for sure, but in the best ways. Cheap drinks, no frills, and an interesting crowd of strangers who aren't afraid to strike up a conversation. Also, music is almost solely decided by jukebox, so no overpowering bumping beats from some d-bag house dj to ruin my buzz and night. Have been in here when it's packed and when there were two other people in the bar, service was excellent across all scenarios, and the staff is very friendly. Only things keeping this place from a 5th star in my book are some better TVs, more room for pool/darts, and replacing the gross recyclable towel in the bathroom.

Time Out is the Cheers on Rockwell. I have been to TO and had some strange nights that were the best of my life. One in particular was a birthday of a Miss Tracy H. who still doesn't remember the pics that were taken....good thing we have the evidence! Ha.... Definitely a dive bar, in the good way. No pretention. Don't come in your club wear, you will be laughed out onto the train tracks. Don't expect bottle service, yes you still have to speak to another human being aka the bartender to get your drink..... Still hard to believe I have never written a review of TO.....legendary.

I'm a huge fan of small bars, cheap drinks, pool, juke boxes and friendly people. Time Out has all of that. It's a very small place and on a Saturday night it wasn't crowded at all. I was shocked by their prices for a tall drink...a Ketel and Soda....was ONLY $4!! And it was strong!! As someone else mentioned it was like the neighborhood Cheers. Everyone knew each other and were very friendly to new people. I love that kind of crowd. Id definitely go back if Im up in that neighborhood again!

$4 for an Oldstyle bottle? I think I almost fainted.... I am a fan, a HUGE fan, of dive bars - but come on! A dive bar that charges $4 for Oldstyle?? Jeez.. Anyway, the place really isnt bad - the daily specials seem to be decent if you are drinking for the specials. So, after I recovered fromt eh $4 Oldstyle, I opted to go to the well drinks for $2.50. Now, I dont know what type of rum they used for a rum and coke, but I might as well have been drinking gasoline - becuase thats what it tasted like. Whhoooooo.. Put hair on the chest I tell ya.. Otherwise, its a pretty decent bar. It is typically dive - but more trendy these days it seems. I have been here a couple times in the past, it just seems to be more popular everytime - or maybe it's because I show up after German Fest everytime - becuase it seems to be that everyone from German Fest goes there afterwards.. Hmmm..

  • Elizabeth H.

Does it smell? Yes. Are some of the regulars a little creepy? Yes. Is there a hole where the door knob should be in the ladies room which leaves you feeling a little exposed? Yes. Minus the above this place is great for a cheap drink and to hang with your friends. Cheers!

  • Annie C.

It's a total dive bar. Cheap, CHEAP drinks. At times the music selection might surprise you - I've heard people play on the jukebox everything between old Dolly Parton to rap. Dolly Parton, sure. Rap? I like rap but in an old dive bar? It's out of place and annoying. But I'll live thru a couple of songs to get a $2.50 Stella. Almost every time I've been there there's been an intramural softball team drinking after their game. One time I saw a cock roach. My friend sitting next to me screamed and told the guy next to her what happened. He nonchalantly said, "oh, yeah. Sometimes we have cock roach races here." Which are not like turtle races, but instead includes regulars spotting a cockroach and chasing it out the bar. Nevertheless, even with that cockroach incident I still like the place. It's fun for a few drinks and to chat with locals without spending very much dough.

A nice local bar with very good prices. You can get Old Style or some nice Belgian ale. The prices on the higher end booze are very low compared to more trendy bars. If you are looking for a low key place to knock back a few drinks try Time Out.

TO's is defintely my bar of choice in Chicago. I am now in my 30s and have had my fair share of Lakeview and Lincoln Park nights and I must admit with no hesitation, I would take a TOs night ANYTIME. The bar has changed as the neighborhood has with some beautiful HW flooring and the brand new windows which makes the place look like a nice little place. The drink prices are probably the best in the city. The clientele is defintely all neighborhood softball guys. During the summer nights you will see @ least one team in there every night of the week, but dont get me wrong, they are all very cool and social people that love newcomers! No food which is a minus, but Rockwell's Bar and Grille is right across the street and has some great food. If your funds are a little short, you can have a BLAST of an evening for 20-30 bucks!!! Where else in Chicago can ya say that?

    (5)
  • Lakshmi R.

Cheap beer!!! $3 for a blue moon? I will take it anyday of the week. They also have specials for each day of the week. I went there on a Monday - $12 buckets ;-) w00t!!! Divey as it gets - according to my friend it has been revamped and I believe it but I wish I had seen it in its original divey-ness. They also have pool tables and ppl out there seemed hard core about their game. Not my game - I only watch it. Overall, I likey!

  • Andy M.

Nice neighborhood obscure location, but aside from that not really much to say about this place. They only give good attention and service to people they recognize. The place is small and the bar is not that visually appealing.

    (2)
  • Ellie B.

The beer is cheap. As are the cocktails. $3.75 for an Absolut and soda? Damn skippy. The juke box has a limited selection, but I'm over it.

  • Colleen C.

The smoking ban inches this place up to 4 stars...it's a little slice of life, and I like it. Perfect for a few drinks after dinner at Pizza Art Cafe, or if you don't want to brave the "Square" proper. Cheap drinks, guys playing hip/hop on the juke box (I remedied that with "I Kissed a Girl," I think one of them vomited), an eclectic group of regulars, a surprisingly clean bathroom, efficient service and a pool table. Nice. They've lightened up the place significantly, maybe a bit too much so...it's almost BRIGHT in there! To be cliche, "it is what it is." And if you like that "is," then you'll like it here. It's wood paneling at its finest, and fun is what you make of it. Go pop a buck into the juke box and swig your Miller Lite, everyone needs that once in awhile... Directly off the Rockwell brown line stop.

Not really a whole lot to say here... Time Out is definitely a dive bar. I go to Time Out once in a while. I think my friends and I call it by a different name each time we go (it actually took me a few tries to find it on Yelp). Time Out is your nondescript dive bar with an old style sign out front. If you are looking for a low key, cheap drinks, little sketchy type of night... Time Out is your place.

  • Kim J.

I went here for the first time recently and was quite the fan. The decor/atmosphere is nothing special - there's a pool table in the back and the walls are lined with sports memorabilia. The crowd is pretty much all locals - you won't find any Chads or Trixies here. What really got me were the drink specials - $2 well drinks on a Saturday night. And they were good drinks too - no skimping on the alcohol here. The jukebox was playing fun 80s hair metal and everyone was having a great time. I think I've found my new Saturday night local spot!

I'll admit, I was apprehensive to enter the "STAB BAR" as people refer to it as, but after reassurance from my eager hubby, we came in for a few drinks, which eventually led to several drinks. This quaint little bar is "no frills" but has low drink prices and very friendly patrons. One lady even had her dog running freely throughout the place----how cool! I'll definitely be back!

bar lighting is supposed to be dim and flattering to ugly people not brighter than the surface of the sun. otherwise i thought this place was dandy; the drinks were cheap the service was a-ok and the jukebox was eclectic to say the least. summary: nice little neighborhood bar in a nice little neighborhood.

  • Kerry M.

Great local place! I am near Kedzie and Lawrence, so I can just jump on the Brownline and get off on Rockwell stop - Basically the front door of the place. There is an awesome jukebox (internet), pool and not that pretentious feeling you would have at a Lincoln Park yuppie, college kid bar. I always have a good time there and when my friends come from the suburbs this is their place of choice.

    (5)
  • Dan F.

so chill bro, have been here now three times in the month or so since my buddy moved in around the corner, once on a friday it was jammed around midnight until closing, once on a saturday around midnight it was deserted until closing, and once on a sunday when it was deserted until closing, empty bars aren't a bad thing dudes, had a good time on all three visits, beers and shots were reasonable and we got a round for free on the friday night visit, bartenders were prompt on the busy night and the other nights obviously had no trouble getting some drinks in, i'm sure i'll be back, almost forgot the most important thing to mention on yelp- plastic- i don't know how many credit cards they'll allow you to split the bill onto or even if they take credit cards, stop being idiots and hit the atm before you go out at night

    (4)
  • Brandon B.

F'ing awesome. I used to live in a Albany Park, so it was only a short L ride (off the brown line Rockwell stop) or a moderate walk for me. Time Out is a dive bar at the core. It went through a recent "remodel"--sorry, but it's like putting lipstick on a pig. A dirty, sometimes foul, drunk, pot-bellied pig... but a charming pig, nonetheless. Drinks are sufficient, but dirt cheap. For the most part, patrons are very nice to you; there's no pretension like you would get at those yuppie Lincoln Park bars. Grab a few friends and get a pitcher of beer at Time Out.

  • William K.

What a great place. Everybody was incredibly friendly. I always assumed it was the sort of bar that didn't care for strangers (remembering the Harp and Shamrock back in the 90's) Apparently all my neighbors go here as everyone I spoke with knew them. A real neighborhood bar without the standoffish cliques. Couldn't wait for baseball season but after trying one of their bloody marys I'm now thinking about football again. Sunday mornings are going to be a blur. I should have started going here long ago... and then again maybe it's best that I didn't.

Okay the last few times I've been to the Time Out, I've heard the same Bon Jovi songs on the juke, and I've seen the same bunch of regulars hanging at the bar. I really like the Time Out but somehow it's one of those places I only hit at the end of the night. As I think about it though, it's perfect for that. Pretty much zero atmosphere, and zero entertainment unless you count the pool table and the juke box....so it's just the spot to hit when you want to keep on drinking. The greatest thing about the Time Out is that it yas yet to be discovered by the Carol's, dive-bar-wannabe crowd. It's pretty local and pretty down-to-earth. I hope I don't ruin it with this awesome review.

  • Andrew P.

This is most definitely a cop bar...and you don't need the homages to MIcheal Ceriale to tell you that. That being said, the regulars are friendly, even though its hard to tell who is manning the bar. Oh, wait, its the guy sitting with his buddy, drinking a beer. They seem to have a pretty impressive spread of food for game days, but as a vegetarian I don't go near (and know enough not to ask). If you go here enough, people might take a shine to you; otherwise, expect a lot of stares. Can you tell I'm ambivelent?

    (2)
  • Erica K.

Good, cheap, divey neighborhood bar directly across the street from the Rockwell el stop. The only thing identifying the bar is the big "Old Style" sign. The best part about it is $5 pitchers on Fridays.. it also has a juke box, pool table, and what appears to be a dance floor, although it is taken over by the pool table. The clientele is as diverse as the neighborhood it's in.

  • Cate A.

One of the best dive bars in the city! My sweetie and I have been going here for years now and they still have cheap beer, cheap cocktails (with good pours!) and friendly people to talk to both behind and at the bar. The regulars, are well, regulars, but they are friendly regulars who like to talk! It looks like somebody's basement, but the place is clean and they recently redid the floors and took down a lot of "art work" that had been moldering on the walls for a while. They also upgraded their jukebox. We were nervous with the neighborhood gentrifying and all that they would be bought out/pushed out, but so far, so good. They still offer box-o-wine to scare off any thin-skinned yuppies. A real Chicago place.

    (5)
  • Dave T.

There are a couple good dive bars in the neighborhood, but the Time Out takes the top spot in my estimation. The distance is ideal for those cold nights when you don't want to freeze while shagging ass to the bar. The jukebox can be a little obnoxious as it overpowers any attempts at conversation. There is also a pooltable that has plenty of space so you can play an honest game without bumping into people. The Time Out bills itself as a sports bar, and by sports bar they mean dive bar that has 2 televisions and a pooltable. They get bonus points for having a decent selection of beer. You can get Old Style if that is your thing but you also have a decent selection to choose from.

    (3)
  • Joe B.

It's a dive in the best way possible. I can almost imagine my old man walking in 30 years ago with his 16 inch softball team. It's loud, it's smokey and most of the patrons are drinking either Old Style or High Life. I love the place.

    (3)
  • Megan B.

I've never actually been inside this place, but I walk by on my way to yoga, and literally every single time I've been by, I've had to dodge huge piles of vomit on the sidewalk. If your patrons go and puke on the sidewalk, have the courtesy to hose it off so that pedestrians don't step in it. That's enough to only give this place one star.
