I tried this place for the first time today. When it comes to Asian food I tend to stick to my usual restaurant. I ordered the pad Thai and egg rolls. Let's start with the pad Thai: it was not good. Very dry. It had no flavor and was not enjoyable. They said there were green onions, which I love, however there was no such green onion. It wasn't very hot plus it came with these crunchy things which ruined the dish even more. The egg rolls were decent. Could have used some more sweet n sour. In all, not happy. There wasn't even any soy sauce or anything for the Pad Thai

Great cashew chicken... Too bad they charge $2.50 for brown rice. Pork in fried wonton is great also... Very crispy. Everything was packed right for to go ... So nothing got soggy.

The food is decent for Thai food and the prices are okay, but the service is terrible. Good luck getting more than 2 mumbled words out of these people. And they won't smile either. Came here with 6 other people. The restaurant was empty and they paid us no attention. Then there was an 18% gratuity on our receipts. Not a fan.

I am always nervous to try new Thai restaurants because I'm very particular about the cuisine, especially as a vegan. It was rough enough trying to find good choices as a vegetarian, but you're really dissecting a menu as a vegan. However, after getting one too many orders of stale Thai tofu fried rice from another restaurant (that was once my favorite) I decided to branch out and try new places. I found this one on GrubHub and had a taste for tofu veg fried rice. I loved it! The fried tofu with peanut sauce was yummy (although room temperature by delivery). The edamame was fresh. And the Jasmine tea was REALLY good. I've had plenty of different teas, but I'm not sure I've had Jasmine tea before. The restaurant was honest with me and called after I placed an order for delivery. A couple of items I wanted weren't vegan so they worked with me to find replacement items for the same price. Although I haven't been inside the location, I give them a five-star rating for their patience by phone and for a really good meal. I'll definitely order from them again.

The others are right tiger cry really is the best! Orange chicken is good too, and sesame chicken is even better. Pad Thai is decent, and the bubble drinks and crab rangoon are awesome. Anything you get here will probably be good. The staff is nice, food comes out fast. carryout only takes about 20 minutes. Definitely recommend this place.

  • Nick K.

They make the best sweet and sour chicken I have EVER had. The chicken is perfectly breaded and served with some vegetables. And, when you order their 8.95 combo, you also get an egg roll and 2 potstickers. I've ordered this twice this week.

Michelin rated for? Run of the mill Thai food. The everyday meal deal is what gets the walker-by motivated to stop in, until that moment you wonder in what category did Michelin use to rate this place. Maybe I didn't pick the right items.. but should you always have to choose the "right items" to experience what they're known for? The inside isn't much to look at, so take-out may be necessary. It seems to be a decent, family owned place which has existed for many years. Not too exciting interior with an atmosphere which is sort of, dismal. If only they had more windows to draw in light or excitement from the street outside. Existing in this area which thrives with Thai restaurants, I expected a lot more. But maybe it's the meal deal which is what drives the repeat business. The food is light and airy. So for anyone trying to eat lighter or on dietary restrictions, this would be a good fit. Customer service is decent.

Their food is better than most. The delivery is SUPER FAST. I really like their home-made coconut ice cream. Also, try their "tiger cry", a beef dish.... among the best I've ever had. Their Pad Woonsen is great.

I love this place! Food is fresh and delicious, portions more than adequate, and staff friendly. I love the Basil Eggplant and Green Curry so far. The vegetables are well portioned in their dishes, unlike some Thai restaurants.

  • Dave K.

Their sesame chicken was quite delicious. The portions I thought were a bit small but I had just moved to the neighborhood and may have been overly famished. The atmosphere and feel is nice as well, a bit dimly lit from my recollection too. Are all restaurants in Edgewater like this?? I shall soon find out.

A dear friend was in town and we were due for another long "solve the world's problems chats," and we both love Thai, so off we went in a downpour for this sweet little spot in Edgewater. Lovely service and very good food: bright vegetables with a nice snap, tender chicken and beef, and great appetizers. I had the ginger chicken and my friend an assortment of appetizers and the tiger cry -- all were wonderful. Now, if you want fiery spices, this is not the place, they do turn down the heat, but, in my opinion, that's not a bad thing. Polite, attentive and unobtrusive service. Also, easy on the wallet.

This is our favorite Thai place in the city hands down. We love the panang chicken curry and the basil fried rice. Even when we moved to a different area, we would still drive to pick it up occasionally. Definitely worth trying

Never heard that. Pick up order on GrubHub have to pay for the fee... $3 . Should We give you 2 stars?

  • Frankie F.

The food here is pretty average. We also had a server who didn't seem to enjoy her job, or her customers. We ordered basic food items from the menu and most items were dripping in sauce or grease. My biggest issue is how fried in oil all the meats were. Most of what I ate was grease. The ingredients didn't seem fresh and the service wasn't good, so average.

  • Jimmy B.

I love Thai food and since I live in the area I tried these guys out, and I was really not very impressed. Nothing was all that bad, but it wasn't that good either. With soooo many amazing thai options in the area, some only a couple blocks away, I have a hard time imagining myself returning anytime soon...

  • Joseph O.

I would have to tell you, not the best Thai food I have ever had, but one of the best. I think the fact that they provide really good customer service even makes their food taste better. I'm a vegetarian so I mainly stick to pad thai and pineapple curry.. light tofu, mainly veggies.. Recommended.

  • Ilana C.

Decent food but their soups can no longer be made vegan (or maybe they never were??). And can't take the fish sauce out of most of the dishes. Oh well.

Excellent little dinner! Had crab Rangoon's, egg rolls, Pad Kee Moa and more. Service was great, place was clean and food was excellent. Only complaint was that the Edamame was not salted to our taste.

Our go to place for Thai food. Little variations in spices makes all the dishes taste really nice. Pad Thai, the curries and the satays are great.

Today I was at the Thai Grill &noodle bar.I tried the #17 Tiger cry , and also had Tom Yum Soup with Shrimp.it was the best so good. The Tiger cry came with a small salad and dipping sauce, and the Tom Yum Soup had good sized shrimp in it.I will be back to this place again the next time I come to Chicago for vacation. It was a great experience.

  • Jeffrey K.

I have been here several times for lunch and never been disappointed. If you like beef, try the "Tiger Cry" which melts in the mouth and is wonderfully seasoned! The appetizers and the the fried rice dishes are all quite good.

Preliminary Review: This isn't a full review of the place as I have not yet dined at the restaurant. However, I have recently ordered delivery from Thai Grill and so, my initial review will be based on that. My friend and I wanted Thai food to go along with our movie night and this place was suggested to us by someone we work with. I'm always up for trying places that are recommended to me and so, we decided to try them out. They have a large selection of menu items with the usual fare you would expect from a Thai restaurant along with a few house specialties. Two dishes in particular were recommended to us and so we tried them: Tiger Cry Beef and Moo Ping Pork. I must say that the Tiger Cry Beef was by far one of the most flavorful and enjoyable Asian beef dishes I have ever had. People who know me would tell you that I don't make comments like that lightly.Very tender... I look forward to dining in...at which point, I will update my review to cover the full experience of Thai Grill.

I love this place! Great food and reasonable prices. I haven't had a bad meal there yet. My favorites are Pad See Ewe and Pad Kee Mao. I like my Thai food spicy so I always ask them to make it spicy and they always do. Their Chang Mai on the bubble bar is excellent as well.

Have read reviews many times just never been till now! Went with a friend about 2 in the afternoon. When we got there it was just us in the resteraunt! Both ate and had our fill for 30$. Waitress very attentive. Slow paced but im from St. Louis originally. Highly suggest special.

I haven't been here in a long time. But I went in for lunch again. Had the lunch special with Gang Pa (country style curry with no coconut milk). It's what I usually get. Very delicious, hot, spicy, etc. If you get the lunch special it comes with egg roll and pot stickers, which were very good as well. I also ordered Edemame and I don't really see what the fuss is over that stuff.

I came here with friends once. It was the first time I'd ever had Thai food. I had the beef lad nar and, well...it was sweet. I've since had lad nar at other restaurants and it never tasted sweet. The one I got at Thai Grill tasted like someone dumped a bunch of sugar in it. Not a good first impression.

It's inexpensive and the portions are great! Perfect neighborhood restaurant to order carry out from on your way home. Definitely opt for the entree combination; you can save the egg roll and pot stickers for later if you can't eat it all.

Thai Grill is a fantastic Thai place in Edgewater, and I'd definitely say it is worth the trip for anybody living in the other parts Chicago. I ordered the special and got fried catfish (including an egg roll, two potstickers and rice) and my whole meal was like $12! You really can't beat that value. My husband got the basil noodles special and it was only $8 (mine had an up-charge for seafood). Honestly you owe it to yourself to try this place out! Edgewater is a fantastic neighborhood for great food at reasonable prices. If you follow my reviews there will be some more in this fun little neighborhood to come!

  • Daniel D.

Very nice place! Can't speak for the dining experience since I got take-out, but the food was nice and warm, spiced just right, and had a good-size portion for the price (which is quite reasonable). Though I can walk there from my place, for those driving, the parking lot should be useful. Also, it's about a block from the Granville Red Line stop. I had the garlic chicken, which I can recommend. Also, you can order on Eat24, which is always good.

Even though I haven't ate at Thai Grill for about 3 years, I carried out from Thai Grill about once a week during my sophomore year at Loyola, since my apartment was only a block away. Thai Grill helped me survive a year living in a sh*!#y one bed, three person apartment with broken kitchen appliances and was my escape from having to eat in campus cafeterias (yuck!) Anyway, I digress. My favorites from Thai Grill are sunrise fried rice, cashew chicken, and sweet and sour chicken. Always dependable, tasty food with a relatively affordable pricetag for a poor college student. Bubble tea and Thai iced coffee were good as well. By the end of the year, I had amassed a collection of 30+ chopsticks and take out menus from Thai Grill, so for simply being my nutritional source for an entire school year, Thai Grill gets my positive review!

As a Loyola University Chicago student, I visit Thai Grill quite frequently when I am in need of a study break/am craving delicious, fatty Thai food. The restaurant itself is dimly lit, and a nice alternative to the poorly decorated Asian restaurants most often found around Chicago. I rarely order anything other than the Chicken Pad Thai (which is AMAZING) and the Crab Rangoon (ALSO AMAZING), however I have also sampled their Potstickers and the Shrimp Shu Mai, which are both very delicious. My mother swears by the Shrimp Rolls and the Chicken Noodle Soup. I will admit that when ordering Thai Grill, it is better to dine in than carry out, as I find the flavor and texture of the food to be better when dining in-restaurant. Overall, a great find and great deal for poor, college students like me! :)

Really good Thai food! I just came here today for dinner and left stuffed. Their green curry was nice and spicy and tasted really good. If you want a nice treat ask for an order of ka nom jeen (just pronounce it the way it reads). That's my favorite home cooked treat! Also really good is their yen ta fo.. Good food and good service..

Went here for the first time after seeing it for years. The food is inexpensive and our waitress was attentive and nice. We had two veg dishes -- red curry with tofu and pad thai with tofu. The curry was too sweet, and since it was served with white rice, it seemed even sweeter. The pad thai was okay. But the worst thing was the "music" -- a Christian rock station was playing the entire time we were there, loud enough to make the lunch rather awful. We couldn't wait to get out of there. Why not play something unobtrusive, say jazz or classical or traditional Thai, or nothing at all? A lot of restaurants play pretty bad music these days (especially that bubblegum pop that seems to be everywhere), but at least it's not proselytizing in its awfulness. This was definitely a first.

On one of the final days I was in Chicago, I went to this Thai restaurant right in the middle of Edgewater. I hadn't heard of it previously, but I decided to check it out, mainly because I like Thai food, and it was close to where I was staying. To be honest, it was a good place to eat, but I did have some quarrells. The place is very sleakly built, and very modern, which is a very good sign for a modern restaurant. The menu had all the thai staples for under $10, and the best part was that for only $8.95, you can get a couple potstickers and rice with any noodle dish. I had the Pad Kee Mao, but my friend got something better: the shrimp curry, which in Thai cuisine is actually coconut milk based. It was very sweet, but the flavors were all there, making for a very pleasent dish. My dish was a noodle dish with onions, chicken, and hot Thai peppers. They weren't kidding when they mentioned it was hot, but it wasnt very hot. Had the noodles not been overcooked and mushy, it would've been a good dish because the flavors were all there, and the BYOB policy was annoying because some of the people I was with wanted beer and wine, but there were few places where you could actually buy it in that area. In all it was a nice affordable meal, and the food was good, but when I go back there, I think im going to stick to the curry because the noodles do tend to mush up under the sauces.

I have never dined in this restaurant... but considering I live in this building and my studio's sorry-excuse-of-a-kitchen looks like it should've been part of a closet, I've been getting take out from Thai Grill once or twice a week... for about 10 months now (don't judge). I'll admit that they're not the best Thai place around and the food is a bit on the oily side. But, there are a few things they do very well: 1) Vegetarian menu - Have you ever tried ordering vegetarian at an Asian place run by Asians? Try explaining that you want the sauce on the pad see ewe but not the dash of fish sauce they typically add? It can be tough. And service may not be all that friendly. Thai Grill has a vegetarian menu. Just add the word "jay" to the end of whatever common Thai dish you crave and ta da! No more explaining. Even as a non-vegetarian, I like their vegetarian dishes. 2) Bubble tea - I've had better and I've had worse. Their bubble tea is better than average and there just aren't that many locations this far north that make bubble tea. So.. no complaints here. 3) Take-out packaging (and I'd assume this goes for delivery too) - Be it soup or stir fry entrees, packaging is done really well. This isn't something that's typically noticed by people unless it's not done well. But having worked as a delivery person before, I had to deal with the messes, so props to their packaging.

An old favorite from when I was in college! A ton of veggie options, very friendly service and the "bubble teas" are probably the best I have ever had.

If you're looking for some cheap and quick Thai cuisine, then this is the place for you! This no frills place is big enough for privacy, and homey enough for you to know that you'll get some good, authentic Thai food. I used to live about 2 blocks from the restaurant, so I would frequent it when I was too lazy to cook, or just had a craving for some spicy curry or noodles! I have had their various curry and noodle dishes and would recommend any of the options on their menu! If you're looking for good bubble tea, I would still stick to Joy Yee's.

Great dining for four on a Saturday evening. Did it family style checking out several of the entrées - chicken, beef & shrimp. All were delicious. Waitress was named Wow and she was great. All agreed that it was some of the best Thai food we've ever had. We'll be going again! Also - It's BYOB with no xtra charges so bring your good Vino.

The service was very slow, even for a Sunday lunch. Food was broderline palatable and the portions were very small in comparison to other Thai restaurants.

Meh, this was good the first time I went and then I went back and it was not so good. I got some noodle dish the first time and when I went back I got orange chicken and it was slimy and dark meat. Ick.

We got a menu in the mail and decided to try this local establishment. The first time we got carry-out, it wasn't ready when we went to pick it up. Figured we'd give em another shot, and the 2nd time was slower and colder than the first. I don't understand how food can be cold when (since they never put our order in) it was JUST MADE?! Waited probably 20 minutes in the restaurant each time (after showing up after the approximated time). The food isn't bad, but they are very disorganized. Apparently, don't waste your time calling in an order... just show up, and they will cook it up nice and cold for you. Should be renamed Slo-Cold Thai Grill.

I have been a fan of this place for far too long, nearly a decade! Literally. Well, since they've been around. They were on the bubble tea bandwagon way before your favorite Joy Yee's location.

I've been coming to Thai Grill for about 3 years. The food is consistently delicious, fast and cheap. The owners are always around and the servers are kind and attentive (though Abby is the sweetest). On top of that, they have a ton of awesome vegetarian options. A+! After being in Asia for a year, I almost teared up eating at Thai Grill after so long. Easily the best Thai food I'd had, since being in Thailand. It brought back a lot of fond memories. :) Short version: Delicious food, fantastic service & Thai hospitality for a relatively cheap price. My favorite in the city!

Updated for 2011 dining in experience. I haven't dined in at Thai Grill for YEARS & now I'm sorry I did. Do NOT get the Sesame Chicken whatever you do. It is a part of the new specials menu and it was gross. Sesame Chicken in the United States for $9 per dish is assumed to be white meat. It is also assumed to be lightly breaded. THIS was neither. The menu description did not mention either of these facts. Naked oiled dark meat chunks sprinkled with sesame seeds. Mind you, I am used to and fine with getting dishes that I don't care for - even if they are overpriced. What I won't tolerate is poor service. The "waitress" argued with us, said it just wasn't like that & then nothing. Didn't offer to return it. Didn't even ask me if I wanted something else. In fact, after I ate NONE of it, she asked if I wanted a box. No, I wanted it out of my face. I still can't get the smell out of my memory. I can't believe I tipped, honestly. (10% for dissatisfied). I have waitress guilt which is along the lines of Catholic guilt and I can't NOT tip. But I can write an honest review. LONG TIME Customer (obviously) that they should have remembered, honestly that won't be coming back to Thai Grill for a long time if ever.

this place sucks. OK, the lady messed up. I ordered Their 8.95 special chicken pad Thai with egg roll, etc. the egg roll was the only thing i can say was decent. I thought I would also order sweet & sour chicken as well . come home its cashew chicken ( of which I'm allergic to cashews). I wasn't paying attention when I was pouring everything together. I call the lady & tell her There was a mistake , she insists that I said cashew instead of sweet & sour ( um lady, if I'm allergic to something why the hell would i order it).She says bring it back & she will change it. Unfortunately, by the time i realized there was cashews in my food after the first crunch my body begins to react). I am struggling to deal with the rash, itchiness , and my mouth blowing up like a puffer fish. Seriously?? I'm dealing with this now, and you think I'm coming back ?? Thanks but NO THANKS!

Only reason I'm giving 2 stars, is because this place used go be really good. Lately, they have severely dropped in quality. Their noodle dishes have been extremely dry the last couple of times we've been there. Even though we ordered extra sauce in the hopes that the pad thai would not be dry this time, there was no sauce in the dish whatsoever. The noodles tasted as if they hadn't been cooked in any sauce altogether. It's sad to say that we will never return to our once favorite Thai restaurant.

Aw, I miss this place. When I was in Uni, this place was always right around the corner from my place. Seriously, my standards of thai food have been set by this place. The Pad Thai was AMAZING, Pad see Ewe: AMAZING. Crab rangoon: AMAZING. Being a poor college student at the time, I needed amazing food for cheap prices and this place delivered. The staff was always excellent, even if we came in with 10 people on a whim...they served us with efficiency. Super excited to head home and visit this place again.

They have a great lunch special: entree (full-sized portion) with rice, egg roll, pot stickers for $8. Don't remember if it comes with a drink too, but at any rate it's a really big amount of food for $8. The green curry is not so great, nothing wrong with it, just not the best. The pad thai is delicious! They close at 10 on weekends and they actually wouldn't let me in for dinner last weekend at 9:30, so be sure to go early. To clarify, they were willing to take an order for take out, but not to sit inside and eat, even at the bar. I only come here for lunch.

This place is awesome!! It is a total hole in the wall place but the food here is great! We had the moo ping pork which was so delicious as well as the tiger (something) and the sweet and sour chicken. Everything tastes really fresh and make to order. For the price this place is definitely a great choice! Personally I'm not a vegetarian but they had a huge vegetarian section so that's also a plus.

Used to love this place. But on early 2013, they sold it, and it's gone down hill since then. Orders take forever, and the quality isn't as high. And the last two times I've ordered from them, they've screwed up the order -- and it was soup. I won't be going back.

As a beginning note, this review is from someone who has been to every Thai restaurant in the ropa area. I tended to go for lunch in between classes and generally ate alone pretty quickly. This place is good for lunch specials, but nothing else. It is cheap and the portions are nice, but just so so food. I think though of all the Thai eateries, this is the cheap, lunch spot.

When my roommate started dating a Loyola student, he discovered Thai Grill. He used to drive up there, pick her up, pick up some Pad Thai for my entire floor who had put in orders, then come back with the girlfriend in tow, all the way from 35th street. I didn't really see the big deal. I went there once, and I had the food. It was decent thai food, but I didn't think it was spectacular. However, in Chicago, anyone who can make decent thai food is good enough for 4 stars in my book. The service here is fast, and I'd recommend taking out instead of eating in. When I started dating someone who lived in Edgewater, I used that as an excuse to go get Thai Grill too.

I love Thai Grill. It has been a part of my life for over 7 years now, and I still cannot find another place that makes me feel this way. As far as neighborhood Thai restaraunts go, this one has it all. For me it is close by to where I live, good value for money and consistent. I love the Thai Fried Rice (extra spicy), spicy chicken/catfish and the garlic pork. We often get the curries and have not been disappointed. The potstickers are also great. We eat here at least twice a month either dine in or take out. It is an easy place to take our baby to because it is not too loud nor too crowded. It used to be our favorite post-workout lunch place on the weekends and has now turned into our favorite Friday night dinner place. If you live close by, you have to try the food. Another plus, they have parking...which in Edgewater is a huge blessing.

Thai Grill... try Thai Fabulousness! The food is ridiculously good for the price... I have argued with many a person that this may be one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever been to (but for all I know- I may only be going to bottom of the barrel.. who knows.) I have to say their take out leaves something to be desired and that cost them one star. The portions seem to be quite smaller when ordered take out and/or delivery. But it's definitely a spot to check out in person. The food is very good, the service is great... and when they have that little pepper in the corner of the dish warning of spice. They are not F***ing kidding.

You would be a fool if you gave this place anything less then 5 stars. Food is amazing (try the basil chicken) and the special is unbeatable and feeds two people. With tip I pay $11 for two people, comes with egg roll and two pot stickers (f-ing delicious). Never had a bad meal and the place is squeaky clean. On top of that its BYOB so you don't have to pay $3 a beer, we usually just bring a small cooler and sit it right on the table! I want to try the other thai place on the street, summer, but i cant help but feel sacrilegious about it.

REVIEW on delivery only-- see other reviews for eating inside- I have never tried it, I have walked by and it is too brightly lit! DELIVERY is really fast!! Food is so hot the containers melt from the steam. Cheap too, so you cannot beat it! BUT, word of caution my friends, watch out, do not order two orders of the same thing, you might find your portions to be significantly smaller than if you just order one! I am partial to their fried (greasy) rice, and crab Rangoon.

I can't believe the quality at Thai Grill. Everything is so fresh and full of colorful vegetables and flavorful and carefully prepared and... $7? Really?! The tofu satay is incredible, marinated and perfectly grilled. 5 skewers (10 pieces) are $5.95. Bring friends- it's far too much deliciousness for one person. Check out the jungle curry (gaeng pa) too, 'cos it's loaded with basil sprigs and vegetables, and it's pretty hot. Super convenient: $6 build your own dish- rice or noodle, wet or dry, hot or mild.

I live in the neighborhood and have been eating here for years. Quality has declined steadily in food and service and tonight reached a new low. I call to order for pickup as I'm on my way home from downtown. They put me on hold and no one picks up. I hang up and decide to order when I get there. It's a Sat night, maybe it's busy. I get there and there are only two patrons occupying one table. There are three servers standing around by the bar doing nothing! These people had to put me on hold? Really? Then they get my order wrong. When I tried to correct it with them they look at me like I don't know what I'm talking about. I gave up and left. Thai restaurants are a dime a dozen. This one had once been outstanding. Pity.

It should be called Bland Grill. I think most of the dishes have been "Americanized" to death. Thai should be spicy and flavorful but the chicken pad thai and even the ginger chicken are boring. And the noodles used here aren't too exciting. I hate to say it because it's such a good deal, but the prices probably reflect the quality. Although it goes without saying be warned the eda mame is sauted in a dark teriyaki sauce. I just learned that's the Thai style. If you're used to eda mame Japanese style, steamed and lightly salted, you may find these tasting completely wrong even though it's authentic. All in all I was very disappointed with this restaurant and ate here only twice even though I lived less than a four minute walk away for over a year. There is a whole strip of Thai, Korean and Vietnamese restaurants a little further south on Broadway, or north on Devon, that offer a much better experience.

How has no one reviewed this restaurant? I. Love. This. Place. I eat here almost once a week. The waitstaff knows me and the food is EXCELLENT. I've tried most things on the menu and here's what I think. 1. They have great vegetarian options. The entire first half of the menu is vegetarian stuff. 2. The crab rangoon is really good as is the deep fried tofu. The tofu satay comes with an excellent peanut sauce. 3. The entrees are really good. I usually get the cashew chicken, which is excellent. The garlic anything is really spicy and the pad thai is excellent. They also have a really good combination plate for lunch where you get to try a little bit of everything. 4. its BYOB! So bring some wine or beer and have an excellent night. The one downfall is that it isn't open on Monday and sometimes our food comes out at different times because they just bring it out when it's ready. Overall, this place is excellent.

Since my last review, I have gone here several times and tried a variety of the menu items. I have my favorites (such as the spicy fish), but I think that everything that i've had here that I thought i'd like has been at least good, if not very good. The service is great and the prices are good. I don't know of any more "authentic" Thai restaurant nearby that is better. Also, for the people that complain about things being too spicy or not spicy enough... can you imagine how hard it is to determine what people really want? There are plenty of people who say "Give me it real spicy!" and then complain that it's too spicy. And, there are just as many people who say that they just want a little spice, and then complain of not enough. They typically do a good job of adding spice if you tell them that you want it. However, if you want more spice, add crushed pepper or chili sauce... they have it for a reason. ;)

I recently moved to Edgewater and have slowly been trying places around my new home. I live off of Granville so Thai Grill is a great thai place to have so close. The food is delicious, fresh and reasonably priced. I have a feeling this is going to become my regular thai joint.

I would come from 35th Street to eat here, as a reviewer mentioned. It's where "HOT" means HOT! Far too many Thai places see a white guy ordering "Hot" or "Extra Spicy" and throw a few extra jalapeños in and call it a done deal. This place gets it right. And fairly cheaply.

This place is in my old neighborhood and although there are closer Thai places to my apartment currently, this one is my favorite and I still head up on occasion to enjoy their Thai red curry chicken. I recommend their "combo" option/special deal which has a main and appetizer. The decor is modern and fits the feel of the place perfectly. The staff area usually not terribly friendly, but they keep the water filled (which to me is important with Thai food). It's also usually not too crowded, which I enjoy. Hidden gem on the North side.

My husband and I have been in search of a well priced, quality Thai restaurant near Rogers Park for quite some time - and we have finally found it! We dined with 3 youngsters, and we all thoroughly enjoyed the dishes, the atmosphere, and the service. Only thing not great was the dessert, so skip that. Can't wait to go back! oh don't forget to BYOB (great for keeping the bill low)

Great cheap college food. I go to Thai Grill with my friends when the school year starts. The people that run the place are extremely nice. The combination plate is my go-to meal there and fills me up really nice. They offer a HUGE vegetarian menu so you veggie kids can't go wrong. For us meat-eaters, it's still pretty tasty. I wouldn't say the food is spectacular, but for the prices you really can't beat it. One thing to note, they only charge meals over $10. I haven't ever gotten delivery from them, so I can't say how speedy they are.

The food here is rather lackluster. The dishes labeled "spicy" aren't, and while I appreciate the large vegetarian menu, it doesn't help when the dishes just aren't very tasty. The interior is dark and not terribly inviting.

  • Amanda K.

I had the pad thai with tofu last night and I was very disappointed. It lacked flavor and was very dry and stuck together. The egg rolls and pot stickers were good.

Why does this place give out substantially less food on their carryouts than when you dine in? Please stop discriminating against us carry-out takers. We never learned how to eat at a restaurant!

I really don't understand why people get excited about this place. It's just not that good. I like to think of it as the pinnacle of mediocrity on the Granville strip. The dishes are very inconsistent and I can never get anything as spicy as I want it to be, even when asking for "very" or "extra" spicy. While I may look rather unassuming, I want those noodles to burn, baby. In the 5 or 6 times I've eaten here, I've NEVER gotten anything I've ordered with the desired level of heat. Perhaps this is indicative of a larger issue: inattentive service. I've waited well over 5 minutes after sitting down before even being given a menu. I have to give them credit for a massive vegetarian menu, certainly. But the dishes are soooooo incredibly bland, and the mix of vegetables is just weird. The one thing I've had there that was actually, genuinely GOOD was the sweet and sour tofu, though they fry it in a weird sort of batter that I've never seen in any other fried tofu, so it's kind of weird. The lunch special is a good deal... but given that there are so many other options in this area for thai, that are SO much better, I don't know why so many people swear by this joint. Pass on it and head to Summer or Indie Cafe, where the food AND the service is excellent. Or just be content with eating mediocre food. Great job.

I really do like this restaurant. But I feel like I have been less impressed the last few times I've been. Our once superb crab rangoons was so sweet it tasted like they put some sweet and sour sauce in the filling. fail. The pad thai has been hit or miss; they either have just enough sauce or way too little, which makes them dry and just not yumz.

I really dig this place. The food I've gotten here, both before and after becoming a vegetarian, has always been delicious (with one notable exception; I'm looking at you Mr. BBQ Chicken), though, as someone mentioned previously, the spicing can come inconsistent. Still, the curries and noodle dishes are top-notch. And it is no where near pricey, especially considering the "healthy" portions. Decor is cool but the place is a bit dark, and service, while never bad or slow, is nothing to rave about. Excellent vegetarian menu. Does do carry-out/delivery.

Checked this place out as it is adjacent to The Sovereign and Athletic Club. It was pretty empty on a weekday evening. Nice ambiance, though. Had the marinated BBQ chicken dinner with rice noodles, sweet & sour sauce on the side, and came with a tiny portion of salad (read: sparse lettuce with rice vinegar dressing). Had the fruit smoothie with pineapple, coconut, mango and oddly came with a grape. However it was pretty good and frothy. The server we had seemed a bit awkward, though it was probably the language barrier.

There are so many good to great Thai places in Chicago that I have to be straight up and say this one misses the mark. The broccoli in my tofu with broccoli was old (tinged brown and yellow) *and* overcooked. Yuck. Also, the carrots were bland and rubbery, as if they came from a jar. The tofu and sauce were fine, though I couldn't detect the garlic flavor in the garlic sauce. I was bummed at having no brown rice option. (I know, not authentic but I doubt most of the menu items are.) I tried the boy's Pad Woon Sen and it was decent. I will say the service was fast: we ordered carry out and it was ready in less than 10 minutes. But I really don't need their food, fast or otherwise...

Awful! The pad Thai, sesame chicken, and wontons were terrible! We will never order from here again.

    (1)

Decent Thai food at a decent price. Food was a little bland and the sesame chicken didn't have any sesame seeds on it? The atmosphere is nice and staff friendly but I have found much better Thai food!

Not your typical Thai place. Thai Grill has outstanding food, calm updated decor and great service. Try the basil chicken and the bubble bar!

I'm starting to think that I go to Thai Grill too much. Their food is good, and the people have been nice every time we went. There was only one time that service was bad, and I think it was because they had a large party going on. The food isn't blow-your-mind awesome, but the decor is nice. I suggest the masaman curry or pad see ewe. The only reason I don't get the masaman curry every time I go is because my boyfriend makes fun of me for ordering the same dish every time. ^.^ (He can't make fun of you, though, so go for it!!!) The appetizers are NUMMIES. I don't have a suggestion for you. Blindfold yourself and slam a dart on the menu, and the appetizer will most likely be tasty. I keep going back because I can depend on the food being good, the place is comfortable, and the price isn't bad.

Kind of empty on a Thursday night when we went, but we got great food and service for not a lot of money. Here's hoping they've got more customers next time - I'd hate to see this place shut down, when I love having such a great Thai restaurant so close.

I think it's overpriced for so so food and small portions. The combination special for $7.95 seems good at the time, but the portions are very small. $8 (Hawaiian)Pineapple Fried Rice was not worth it as well. How can a Thai restaurant mess up pineapple fried rice?? I've had waaaaaaaaaaay better thai food. no more thai grill for me.

Since I've moved to Chicago, I've become part Thai (in Cleveland I was mainly Polish). I eat Thai about 2-3 per week (I've not added it up until now and even I'm a little taken aback by it). Yes, I've had my share of Thai and I have to say, this is strictly mediocre to me. This was originally hyped to me as "THE" Thai place in the neighborhood so I was excited to try it. I've eaten in the several times I've been here and while the menu is a list of the usual Thai fare, it was sizable, so I was pumped. I usually opt for a red curry or a "spicy basil" concoction; I've tried both here and for some reason I cannot get over the greasiness. The one consistent comment I have is that none of the flavors seem "clean"--I know that sounds so food snobby but I'm being serious. What usually appears as some kind of broth (spicy basil) or thin and creamy red curry here is just swimming in grease. The taste is not bad but the meal is very heavy and I always leave wondering about the health of my pores for some reason. The service here was very attentive and timely. Again, no real problems. But I have my Thai favorites in this neighborhood and this just isn't one of them. With so many other choices, I only frequent this place when friends pick the dinner venue.

I was afraid to try Thai Grill because it was the neighborhood favorite of a former boyfriend who found anything spicier than toast to be objectionable. No worries; I went last week, and enjoyed my egg rolls (two for $2.75) and red curry ($6.50). Service was very fast. Food was very hot. The curry didn't have a ton of chicken in it, but it was tasty. It made my nose run a little, but my eyes didn't water. One of the egg rolls let out a big squirt of grease when I bit it, but I don't mind grease. If you do, maybe the egg rolls are not for you. They have an all-the-time special: an entree or noodle dish plus one egg roll, two pot stickers, and jasmine rice for $7.45 as of this writing. The good prices and convenient location for Loyola students probably means that the restaurant is usually full of college students in their late teens or early 20s, which I am not. If you can't tolerate that age group, you know what to do, at least when school's in session. The boyfriend used to get take out but stopped this summer when an order hadn't shown up after an hour. He called to find out what happened, and they told him they thought he was picking it up. He wondered why they hadn't called if that's what they thought. Then they suggested that he pick it up. That incident ended his love for Thai Grill, but I haven't seen or heard other delivery complaints, so maybe it was a fluke. The interior is modest--very middle of the road, not dirty. I'd go back.

I loved the Panang Curry and fried Tofu. Very tiny bathroom (women) but it seemed clean enough. The service was good even on a quiet day. Very reasonably priced and awesome, I am sure, for all those who like Thai and live in the Sovereign.

  • Morgan C.

Bottom line: it's close and it's servicable. Not the best pad thai I've ever had, although I do like the variation: pad thai and pad thai jay. The latter has lots of veggies and mushrooms. And the crab rangoons, quite the barometer of a Thai restaurant, are on the higher end of the scale. And no complaints on the bubble tea either; nothing out of the ordinary, but still tasty. I've never seen it "busy," and I've always gotten decent service. But usually, I prefer to just go pick it up.

It's really not possible to rate this restaurant on only a 5 star system. This is the restaurant I rate all other Thai restaurants against. No joke. The other two nearby Thai restaurants are decent competition, but this one takes the cake. I could live off of their Crab Rangoon alone. I highly recommend the Pad Thai, Pad See Ewe, Pad Woon Sen, spring rolls, and of course the above mentioned Crab Rangoon. Their Thai Iced Tea is also Bubble Tea, so if you aren't a fan of big chunks of tapioca popping into your mouth, then ask for it without them. Their similan and bangkok drinks are amazing -- especially with the fresh fruit on top of it. They're so good that I've trekked across Loyola's campus in the snow to get them. (And since I don't own gloves or mittens, I nearly got frostbite because of it). I've never seen it really crowded, but I've never seen it empty. It's in the lobby of The Sovereign, so residents have their own door to pop in and out of. Delivery takes a little while, but they've always gotten my order right. Just an awesome awesome place.

Crab rangoon crab rangoon crab rangoon. I am constantly on the prowl for perfectly crispy, crabby, scrumptious crab rangoon and thai grill delivers on all three counts. Favorites are: Pad Thai, Pad Woonsen, Massaman Curry (rawr!). Their staff treats you warmly and is very attentive. One time I ordered delivery from Thai Grill and accidentally gave my home (Ohio) phone number as contact. Around midnight I got a call from my mom saying that someone has called and woken her up and, speaking "chinese," kept saying something unintelligible about me. I could not stop laughing. It was delivery of my much-loved crab rangoon and pad thai! Ooo and across the street is Metropolis cafe, so it's a perfect evening if I do say so myself.

This is my favorite Thai place in the city. While it's probably not the most authentic Thai food in the city, the food is always good. I've never had a bad meal here, and neither has anyone else I've taken there. I always make changes to my order (I don't like carrots) and they're really good about doing what I ask. The prices are great and the food is always ready VERY fast. It's a great little place to bring a couple people... highly recommended.

Reasonably priced and delicious. I like the panang curry, as well as the tempura, and the appetizers are large and delicious too. The "made to order noodles" are an excellent healthy option. Management is polite and attentive. I usually get delivery from here, since it's in the area. It sucks that they're closed on Mondays though :/

I used to walk past this place all the time, and since I was in the area the other day I popped in for a late lunch. First off, it was completely empty. I thought maybe they were closed with the doors unlocked. This isn't really a fault, it just creeped me out a little. Then the waitress kept asking me what my ethnicity is, which I didn't tell her cause it's none of her business, and she seemed offended by that. Then, I asked for no eggs on my pad thai, cause while I love me some noodle goodness, I don't like eggs. And like so many other restaurants I got "the look", the one that screams I must be some kind of crackhead for asking them to alter their recipe to accommodate my radical dietary needs. I just don't like eggs! The food came really fast, and it was pretty good. And cheap. So those three stars stand for fast, tasty, and cheap.

I've been a fan of Thai Grill since the first time I dined there. The veggie egg rolls and pad thai are good. I LOVE their crab rangoon. After discovering Indie Cafe (in this same area) I don't frequent Thai Grill as much as I used to, but it's still good. No sushi though--that's the main reason Indie Cafe gets more business from me. It's yummy though, definitely worth trying. Delivery is quick too!

Mediocre Thai food - especially when you are close to other, nicer eateries like Summer and Indie Grill. But the real slap in the face is the mean, hostile service. Simply put, spend your money elsewhere.

I went here yesterday with my mom and we had a good meal. I was initially drawn in because the sign across the street ("Best Thai food in Chicago is across the street" (or something like that)) cracked me up. So, as I found myself around the corner, I stopped in and ate. It was really yummy. The first thing that happened that really, really made me happy was that I was staring at the menu for a few minutes, marveling over the number of veggie friendly items they had before I noticed that the whole front part of the regular menu was vegetarian!! Yeeehaw! Don't worry meat lovers -- there's plenty of good stuff for you, too. I had the tofu panang curry and my mom had the chicken panang and we were equally delighted. Both were $6.50 (I didn't really like that I had to pay the same for tofu that she did for chicken, because I'm pretty sure that meat costs more, but I didn't think the price was too bad anyway, so who can complain?). We got an appetizer of veggie egg rolls which were good, but they were tiny and there were only two. Those cost $2.50. Overall, I was pretty psyched about this place. The only place I've been to for Thai since I've been back in Chicago is En-thai-ce and it had HORRIBLY bland green curry, so I have been in need of some good Thai food. This hit the spot. I would definitely recommend it. It's not amazing, but it's pretty good and as everyone says, the prices are also pretty nice. There's even an option for an entree, two egg rolls, and two pot-stickers (I think) for $7.25 (or close to that). Not bad! Check it out if you're around there. My next stop? Indie Cafe!!

Reasonable Thai food, though it is hit or miss and not consistent. The owners are very nice and the decor is nice. They always are accomidating when I have been there with a group. Not the worst thai food, but not the best. I do enjoy the fact that they have noodles made to order and a combo with appetizers for under $10.00.

Man! I really wanted to like this place! It's within walking distance to our home, so that was why we tried it in the first place. Plus it looked nice on the inside and had a big menu and prices were good. The first time I was really pleased. I ordered the Masaman Curry Jay, basically a savory curry dish with veggies, tofu, and peanuts. It was a good sized portion and I enjoyed the flavors. My husband also like his dish..although I don't remember what it was. And they were very quick in making it. By the time we walked there, it was ready to be picked up. The second time I ordered, I got two things, hoping I would like at least one. I got the Sweet and Sour Tofu. Which they describe as crispy fried tofu served with peppers, carrots, onions, tomatoes and pineapple in a tangy sauce. Ok, to me I thought all of this would be mixed and served together, not so. The rice was in one section of the take out box (which I am ok with), the sauce in a little container and the fried tofu was sitting on top of maybe a couple large slices of carrot, and a couple of barely cooked peppers and raw onions. I saw maybe two pieces of shriveled pineapple. It was just so weirdly "put together" and I use that term loosely because it all didn't seem to go together one little bit. The fried tofu was pretty good, a bit too squishy for me though. The sauce was the highlight, very tasty. I ended up just eating that with the rice. My husband, however, really like the tofu and the sauce and proceeded to finish my meal. You might be thinking, that's weird he ate two meals in one sitting, no actually, he started to eat his meal but found a hair in it. I shudder at just the memory. I also got an order of the sunrise fried rice, that was supposed to have egg in it and instead had tofu. And I didn't really care for how it tasted, again my husband seemed to like it ok. But I will say this, they are very kind about subbing things in and out without charging and they are very sweet. Oh and their thai fried egg rolls are yummy, not too greasy and the sauce to dip them in is good too. And they have vegetarian ones which is so refreshing to have some options! The vegetarian menu is pretty impressive. That's why I will probably give it one more try, but then my search continues on for perfect Thai food. Oh perfect curry, I know you are out there! I just know it!

I like this place, particularly the tofu satay appetizer and the coconut milk curries. I've been going there on and off for a few years, and at first I thought it was nothing to write home about. But the more I try other Thai places in the area, the more I appreciate Thai Grill for its balanced flavors, freshness, service, and overall quality. The prices are very decent, too!

Though not the epitome of Thai food in my eyes (not really the best eyes for declaring this), I enjoy this place for what it is: fast and friendly service, above average food--though there are plenty of wonderful exceptions, and right across the street from the coffee shop Metropolis. While the noodle dishes like pad thai and pad see ewe are about as normal as can be, the crab rangoon is awesome! This for an appetizer, along with one of their tapioca bubble drinks (the similan is a great choice), and the mausaman curry with beef as an entree is about as great as it gets around the Edgewater/Rogers Park area. Their service is great with a lot of warm, smiling faces to go around. Delivery service is insanely fast, and the prices are relatively cheap. Anyone within a couple miles of the place would be missing out if they didn't have the number of this place programmed into their phone.

Thai Grill is, well, a fairly typical Thai restaurant in Chicago. It's BYO, mostly under the $10/person price-point, and often fairly busy but not overcrowded with the under-40 set. The food is decent and comes in reasonable portions, the service is good but sometimes slow (the first time I ate here, I made it through two pints of Hacker-Pschorr before my food arrived), etc. Basically, Thai Grill is a decent place to eat if you live around the Granville/Loyola area. There's no reason to travel too far for it, though, because there's likely a Thai joint in your neighborhood that's just as good.

I love this place. It's cheap, the service is fast and friendly, and the food is delicious. I tend to always order the fried rice, which granted is difficult to screw up but theirs is just divine. It tastes like heaven. Love them.

Not impressed. The food was very bland- I ordered the sunshine fried rice and it literally had no flavor, I asked for sweet & sour sauce to poor over it just so it had a taste. The egg rolls were good, decent pot stickers and sesame chicken. Just not great though. And their water tasted funny! I'd rather go to en thai ce any day, maybe even rice thai cafe. This place is nice if you're in the area. It is nice on the inside (unlike RTC).

I lived in the Sovereign, and I let me tell you it was AMAZING to order cheap, delicious Thai food in the dead of winter and not have to leave the building! Personal favorites were the crab rangoon, red curry, and Pad Kee Mao. I think alot of their food is prepared earlier on and most of it is just kept heated all day, but its still really good. And for such a great price!!

Ate here for the first time yesterday, and was mad that I had waited so long to check it out. Totally delicious, fresh, fantastic thai for CHEAP. They also deliver - yay! The place inside is cozy and sweet, very comfy. Right by the Granville Red Line stop. Staff were friendly and helpful. I can't wait to order from them again...

i give this place one star not because it is awful but because there is so much better thai food within a couple blocks of this place and every time i go in there, the service ticks me off enough to make their mediocre thai food even less enjoyable. it always seems like their grundingly serving you, as though you've interrupted their dead-pan atmosphere and expression. the decoration is nice and the place seems pretty clean, but come on, in a competitive market and just out of common courtesy, would it hurt to greet you when you walk in, smile once in a while, make eye contact, and check to see that every thing is ok? they are in the business of SERVICE here and there are much better places for SERVICE as courteous and as delivering enjoyable food.

The Thai Grill occupies a space in the historic Sovereign Apartments building at the corner of N. Kenmore & W. Granville (Edgewater Beach area), less than 2 blocks from the Granville red line L stop. Their food is fresh and good, with very reasonable pricing. Food is made fast! They have a fairly extensive menu of choices, including many vegetarian selections. My favorites include the shrimp shu mai appetizer, their spring rolls, and their combo fried rice. The Thai Grill also makes the popular "bubble drinks" - frozen blended non-alcoholic smoothies with tapioca "bubbles" at the bottom. Tasty and consistent, this is a really super restaurant. Delivery available; closed Mondays.

If you are looking for a quiet out of the way thai restaurant, this is a great choice. Located in a historic building in Edgewater, it is quick, convenient, and above all, tasty. Prices are average, service is quick, and delivery is available also. They seem to have a pretty full menu, although I must admit to being in a food rut. I have tried only the basil chicken! Delightful every time!

There Bubble tea is the only saving grace.. The food was mediocre Thai food at best. I had the pad see ew and it wasn't anything that would make your taste buds shout.. In fact it bored me and I thought it was bland and almost tasteless.. the egg-rolls were a more Chinese variation of egg-rolls (lot's of cabbage!) As far as using this as your standard for Thai restaurants i recommend checking out Siam Noodle there one of the best in the city.. actually i should review that next.. ! Anyway back to Thai grill! I also had there papaya salad.. which was a very Americanized version which they made semi-spicy after an extra extra spicy request (which is somewhat typical) but I thought I put enough extra emphasis on the amount of spiciness.. maybe they just didn;t have hot enough peppers? The bubble tea was excellent however and i would highly recommend it very refreshing and they for the most part use real fruit in every flavor!
