This bar is small and you could miss the sign as you drive down Clark, but you should not pass it up! If you are looking for a great place to get craft beer, play some darts, Wii, board games, or just shoot the shit with a bunch of friends, this is the place. The atmosphere is very laid back and the bartender is no frills. As a girl who loves cocktails, I give a sincere high five to this guy for making the most delicious key lime martini! I will definitely be coming back here often when I am in the need for some drinks and a place to just "hang" and have good conversation. Warning: this place does not have a kitchen, so no food! HOWEVER, the bathrooms are extremely clean and accommodating; unlike most bars around Chicago!

I came here with a friend for quick drinks. When we walked in the entire place was playing Trivia, which seemed fun. The atmosphere was nice and cozy and very welcoming. Drinks were strong and reasonably priced. There was an incident that was funny to me, (I don't think my friend found it funny) but a rather drunk patron came over and kissed my friend on the forehead. The bartender quickly came over and asked if everyone was alright and apologized for the guy's behavior. I would definitely come back again.

This place is pretty great. Good beer, selection of board games and video games. They even have a dart board here. Really liked the music they play. Franny and I were here on a Saturday night and it was great so... I'll give give it five stars. It seems like I give all of my review five stars but I think this place is actually great. Just wait until I find some shitty place and rate it. It'll happen soon, at some point. Cards Against Humanity, Operation, and Connect Four are games we played. But back to the beer. They have a great menu and selection of seasonal beers on tap. We had some summer beers tonight and they were great and not that expensive either. They take debit/credit with a $10 minimum of course. I have to close my tab now. But yeah this place is pretty good and Fran and I had fun so I highly recommend it and at least check the place out if you're in the neighbourhood.

very cute place to have drinks and play games. just went here last nite for their trivia tuesday & i had a great time with a friend. 6 rounds of 10 trivia questions on different topics. we didnt do so hot on those questions but its ok cuz i enjoyed my company. they seem to have a great beer menu but im not a fan of beer. they had a limited selection of other alcohol but i was able to find something i liked. the bathrooms are awesome tho!! very clean and modern lookin!! 2 thumbs up! i always appreciate a great bathroom in any establishment!! while they didnt serve food the bartender suggested a few restaurants around the area. they even have a bunch of menus you can order from & have it delivered to this place! how cool is that!!?! i definitely would come back here cuz i wanna pla the board games they had as well as the wii i was told they have.

Oh, Norse. You are everything one could want in a cool neighborhood bar: modern but not stuffy, friendly bartenders, clean bathrooms, and an ever-changing, always-current, well selected draft list. Most importantly, these people know what's worth drinking, and you'll find it on their menu. So, keeping this short and sweet: drink here. Eat pretzel sticks. Play some Wii. But mostly enjoy the best update of the good old fashioned Chicago neighborhood bar you'll find on the far North side.

  • Joe P.

It's not just that they have great beer, but that they rotate taps, that they actively go after barrels that are unique and they want to try, that they know what they're talking about---that they LOVE BEER. The owners--one of which is usually the one pouring you your draft--have created a welcoming atmosphere, one that begs you to plop your freezing ass down and drink and be merry with the rest of us. Note: no food (but free pretzel sticks)

Comfortable low-key bar. The games are cool, it's a decent selection, with games like boggle and a Wii. Other patrons were getting pretty into darts. Nice beer selection, too, with a few good IPAs on tap, and more choices in bottles and cans. It feels pretty new and recently renovated, simply decorated, but nice and clean. There are maybe 10 tables for four, and some standing room, but it's not a huge bar. There are several TVs showing sports, and the music wasn't blasting. It's not really in a walking neighborhood, although there's another bar and a pool hall on the block. There's plenty of parking around.

Dogs allowed! Tart and sour beers abound! Changing drink list! Friendly bartenders! Games! Easy to get to! Food allowed! Yay!!

Great casual beer bar (with good non beer drinks too). A bar like this has the potential to completely transform a neighborhood just as Hop Leaf had done to Andersonville about a mile south, and this part of the Edgewater/Rogers Park area has been ready for this level of gentrification for some time. They don't have food, but they do allow carry out and delivery from the various places nearby.

I'm going to make this simple. This bar is awesome. A lot of beer. Nice company. I could write more, but instead of reading, just go check it out. You won't regret it, unless you're antisocial or a miserable person, then stay home. Cheers!

I was looking for a place near work to have after work cocktails. And this place kept getting mentioned. I did a quick glance through their drink options, they have a quality beer selection, and I was sold. We say at the bar and barstools were good. Best part...they had hooks for our stuff!!! I love when bars have these. Service was solid. Bartender was attentive, but not all up in our business. The bar was also conducive to chatting and sharing some laughs. It might get louder as the evening goes on, but for the 4+ hours we were there, nothing but good times were had.

Loving this bar and would be a regular if I lived even a little bit closer. The booths are big and spacious so you can relax and enjoy conversation while you sample amazing beer. The video games and board games and the Jenga are a nice touch. The key - though is the bartender - I am remiss for not getting his name - but he knows his beer and after meeting me for three minutes was able to pick beer for me with great accuracy. I started with a Metropolitan Flywheel (Chicago) after that whenever he came by I just said "Surprise me." He did and every one better than the last. This guy was like some mind-reading bar-genie. Next he brought Central Waters OUISCONSING RED ALE (Amhurst, WI) - a funky and fruity beer. The next surprise was the Great Lakes Christmas Ale (Cleveland, OH) this delicious variation on the theme had a nice caramel finish. I was blow away. He followed that up with Lagunita Brewing Company's A Little Sumpin' Sumpin' Ale (Petaluma, CA). Another beer that made my tired old face smile widely and repeatedly. We were able to sit and talk - not yell - talk until last call. It was just (and I hate to sound like grandma) a completely pleasant experience. The prices were reasonable - the service impeccable. I love any bar where the amount of craft beers outnumbers the amount of hipsters. The bar is within walking distance of the Raven Theater - so if you are there seeing a show - just walk five minutes to the north and visit.

I never even knew this was here. So, when a friend said this is where we're going, my natural curiosity was piqued and ending up here had to happen. I came in later on a tuesday night, so I didn't exactly expect much of a crowd. What they did have though was a real good beer selection. They had about 12 different taps along a real nice and midwest based bottle list. While I didn't take advantage of it, they even have Wiis in the back. Fun and laid back seemed to be the real theme here. Norse wasn't the biggest place, but it didn't feel small either. Methinks I'll be back numerous times

The perfect bar if you want to relax and have some great beers. Knowledgeable staff made the list a little less intimidating. I left thinking that if I ever owned/opened a bar it would be exactly like this place. Keep up the good work.

A quiet and friendly little craft beer haunt just a hop, skip and a jump from home. A diverse and well-curated selection of drafts where you're sure to find two or three interesting selections during your stay. The bottle/can list was also quite complete for a smaller bar outside of the high-traffic neighborhoods in Chicago. I asked the bartender about the significance of the 'Norse' name and its roots in Scandinavian culture. He responded that it actually had to do with the place being far on the Northside of Chicago. 'Norse-side' in proper Chicago-ese, I guess. Nice. I'm planning on keeping track of this spot's ever-changing menu and will be back again quite soon.

Take a seat. Close your eyes. Have a friend, lover, or stranger start reading this review to you, because this bar is just too great for you to read on your own. You need to use your mind palace to grasp what this bar is all about. Are your eyes closed? Yes? Good, then let's get started. Think of a place where everybody knows your name. This is not that bar. This is a bar that is humble. It is a place where the bartenders can take you on a historical walk-a-bout of beer without making you feel like you should have more tattoos before talking to them. This is a bar with no presumptions. The attitudes of both the staff and patrons is a balanced as their selection of beers. It is a bar of the people, for the people, and by real people. Do not come here if you want to dance up on the girl who texted you twice so hard that you misalign her hips. Do not come here if you would rather demonstrate how fast you can type over how fast you can talk. Your eyes should still be closed, so please take a moment to thank your friend, lover, or complete stranger who is reading this all to you. The Norse Bar has a "The," in front of its name not by choice. Its not on the sign hanging over the door. Its not on the menus and it is not because they wanted to distinguish themselves. It is because normal people like you have decided that this bar is so unique, so different, so special that it is not just another bar....it is THE bar to come to in Chicago. You can open your eyes now. You better be at Norse. You are welcome.

  • Callie C.

I love Norse bar! It is 100% my favorite bar in the city. They have an amazing beer selection (a lot of ciders too!) and Ben and Freddie are both extremely knowledgeable about everything they carry. Super inviting atmosphere with lots of board games and TVs. Also, they have a great menu selection if you want to order in!

  • Cullen H.

What an awesome neighborhood hangout! The tap selection is great and from what I understand changes quite often. During our recent visit Norse had Stiegl on tap, which was amongst my favorites beers during a vacation to central Europe a few months back. And it was difficult to find on tap even there, so for me this was a treat. I tried a handful of others, most of them were fantastic. We were also able to order in a pizza to accompany our epic board game playing. Surprisingly, the bar was not too crowded for a Saturday night, but that may have had something to do with Labor Day weekend.

Love this place. Extremely friendly and knowledgeable staff, GREAT beers, great crowd and overall great experience. This is definitely one of my favorite local bars.

Came here randomly one night and it was a good time. The bartender was friendly and made great drinks. There were darts and games in the back. One couple even had their dog with them while they drank. I love it! Music was good and we were able to hang out and have a good time while catching up and enjoying our drinks. I would go back.

  • Steven H.

Great beers and ciders. I live down the street and this is my favorite place to grab a good drink and watch some sports. The Ian, Ben, and Freddy and awesome guys and very knowledgable about their selections. New beers and ciders constantly coming in the door. Also, miller highlife tall boys if you don't feel like being crafty.

  • Christopher B.

They have about 12 beers on tap that they rotate through just about every week. So, odds are that they have something that will perk your interest - even for the beer advocate who's had just about everything. They also have a pretty extensive bottle list too, but the tap selections are a much better value. The prices are decent too. The more limited, higher alcohol beers usually run around $8 for a snifter, but you can pretty much always get a legit 16oz pint of Little Sumpin' Sumpin' for $5. So you don't have to spend a ton of money. Also, they don't serve food (they do serve free pretzel rods) but you are welcome to bring your own food or order it in. Dogs are allowed as well, which I think is cool. The service has always been great here too.

    (5)
  • Jason H.

They got some good taps and some friendly bartenders. Its a nice place to hang and play board games. I played some Connect 4 (and proudly did pretty well... although I was playing a novice.) Either way if you're in the area and want something chill its a great place to go, probably wouldn't travel if I wasn't in the area though. Enjoy!

  • Melina D.

Norse is one of my beautiful boyfriend's favorite bars. Excellent beer selection that constantly rotates. But I DO want them to bring back that totally roasted cider. It was the nectar of the gods. I've spent many an evening posted up with friends playing scrabble or poker or operation (there are board games in the back). It's the best place in the world.

    (5)
  • Hayley H.

Nice space. Especially love the board games and cards to play with. I heard something about Monday being "bring your dog day." If so, im in love. Nice bartenders. Good music. Alfresco windows open when warm. Will be my neighborhood "go-to" bar.

  • Brian S.

Great Atmosphere, Great Beer, Great Staff, NO FOOD The place is nice clean and has a great beer list. The owner is often the one tending bar so you know this is not some crappy chain. My biggest complaint is there is no food. They are ok with you delivering food, but sometimes you just want an order of fries.

    (4)
  • Jeffrey K.

Norse is within stumbling distance of Clark and Devon; it's a good neighborhood bar with a decent and affordable draft list and a friendly staf; the place is often filled with local characters so there's plenty of decent people watching and sugar plums for the eyes. Last I was there a fellow patron clutching a rather giant stein had placed a bottle (unopened) of wine in the stein to go. Careful, it's one of those places where you might stay too long and wind-up a pumpkin.

    (4)
  • A L.

This is my favorite bar. It's so cozy and laid back. Great music is always playing. There are games. People can bring their dogs. And there are always new beer selections (and some that are always around).

    Great place!! Good beer!!!

  • Julia J.

Excellent beer list, attentive staff and a cool atmosphere. I have had some great drinks at Norse and enjoyed some great conversations and videogames in the back of the bar. I do prefer to get here earlier when some of the booths are available. Sometimes it's subdued and quiet- a good place for the games available, great drinks and great conversations. Other times I've attempted to go, it's been packed and super loud but really dark and not my scene.

    (4)
  • Peggah G.

Went here for a Friday night meetup and I loved it. We made a mess several times and bothered the barkeep, but we still had a great time. Some people were standing in front of the wii screens, so we couldn't play them, but we still had fun with jenga and jumping from booth to booth. This place is really great because they have a handful of ciders on their menu and most of their draft drinks come in very nice glasses. The bar has pretzel sticks which is a nice touch. I really liked the atmosphere of this place and would definitely head back if I found myself in the area.

After checking out the gym with Jon's aunt we ventured across the street to the Norse Bar. If I lived around here I would be here often I am sure. Perfect little bar to belly up at, drink some tasty beers and watch football, or any game for that matter. Best part... they win my "Best Bathroom In Town" award for the whole Mid-West trip. Seriously, best bathroom. I even peeked into the guys bathroom, and it is cooler than the women's. You have to check them out for yourself, I can't tell you anymore. Highly recommended!

It's a bit out of the way for most Chicagoans, being located on the far north side in Rogers Park, but it's well worth the detour and for neighborhood folks this place is treat. The owner Ben does it up right. A regularly updated draft beer menu keeps things fresh while the extensive variety of bottles and cans ranges from the familiar to the obscure. There are always rod pretzels to graze on and he also keeps a selection of card/board games, a Nintendo Wii, a dart board, and a handful of arcades on hand just in case. There are a some large flatscreen TVs but they are positioned in a non-intrusive way and easily ignored (or not as your preference dictates). So, bookmark this place in case you're cruising by or make the effort to go out of your way and check this place out.

    (4)
  • Scott J.

Lots of games, televisions for the big game, etc but the main draw is the beer and the bartenders. With fresh selections every week there's always something new to try. You can get a sample but even the oddest selections (smoked beer?) are worth a full glass. Though there's not a patio, the front wall of windows is opened on a nice day. Great to have such a great neighborhood bar.

    (5)
  • Kelsey H.

My favorite bar in Chicago, hands-down, with the cleanest bathrooms this city has ever seen. Amazing beer & martini choices (including my personal favorite the cherry cheesecake martini) and lots of board & arcade games to keep the night fun and interesting.

  • Diana J.

Norse Bar is a great getaway bar, as it's far from the Clark Street people traffic further south. They do not have a kitchen, which I was disappointed to find out. They also didn't have the Metropolitan Afterburner Oktoberfest, which was the point of my trip there (when called, they said it was on tap). That aside, it's not a bad spot. They have arcade games, and video games in the back along with board games and darts. They wall facing the street pretty much opens up so you can enjoy the weather and the scenery. They have several televisions, and their beer/cocktail selections are pretty extensive. The space itself feels good, and though we were the only table on Sunday afternoon...I hear they are bumpin in the evenings. Not so good for football games and grub, like I thought. I would recommend going at a time when there's a bigger crowd to better appreciate the space.

  • Nicolas L.

If you live in the area and you fancy yourself a beer connoisseur, then this is the bar for you. The bartenders are friendly and knowledgeable, the people drinking there are escaping the typical Loyola student dance bar, and the place offers lots of games (board or electronic). The beer selection is very, very good, and is organized from light to dark to help people choose which brew they want to try. For many (including myself), this is the Cheers style bar that you have been waiting for, but with much cleaner bathrooms and a much better beer selection. The only downside is no food other than pretzel sticks. If you are determined, you could head across the street to the Diner, or sometimes a Dominos guy waltzes in with pizza for sale. If you are looking for the biggest and best beer selections on the Northside, Hopleaf and Fountainhead are better. But it's all the extra little things that sets this place apart and makes you want to come back to try the extra bitter IPA or the kickass porter they just got in.

This place to me is your typical bar with average drink prices. They have games as well.

  • Steve S.

Great beer, very nice bartender and friendly patrons. Lots of classic board games and video games too. I have definitely found my neighborhood bar! However... it is a much different bar at night, more of a party bar. I'll go during the day. :-)

  • Jenny B.

So far, I've only been once and enjoyed it. Went on a quieter night--which I probably prefer--and they have Wii with old school games so that was awesome! Hopefully I'll like it just as much when I find a night to go back.

Decent & friendly little craft beer-centric bar in Rogers Park. College fb was on (no music) while I was there on a weeknight. I saw at least one single barrel bourbon in Wathen's. I found some cool brews on bottle menu, too.

  • Corey B.

The perfect neighbourhood bar that I never want you to discover. The place is comfortable and easy -- you can go alone or in a group -- just leave me a seat at the bar. Seriously, the selection of beer and liquor is great and whether I need to watch a game, get away, chat intimately with a friend or just unwind with the BF, this is my 'go to' place. Doesn't hurt that the owners/bartenders are great people and make a point to get to know their customers.

Norse Bar is a premium spot to hang out as well as consume great beer and spirits. Fairly new to the Edgewater/Rogers Park area; Norse is going to be around for quite sometime. The owners are friendly, knowledgable, and very hands on with their establishment. They welcome all drinkers (connoisseurs and amateurs alike) seeking a friendly, judgement free and aesthetically cozy atmosphere to enjoy their drinks and company. Amenities: *12 Craft Beers on tap. (With a constantly changing rotation that ranges from Stouts to Ciders you will surely get a chance to find a favorite. And averaging $5-6 per draft it's definitely something to check out.) *Various canned and bottled beers (if you're a fan of stouts try Youngs Double Chocolate. Personal favorite.) *5 televisions (Playing sports and other bar friendly material.) *Arcade Gaming system (such classics as Frogger/Galaga and Donkey Kong.) * 2 Nintendo Wii systems (Mario Kart Racing is a personal favorite.) *Board games. *Good Music that goes well with the atmosphere. *Trivia nights (Tuesday) and various events such as an upcoming Oscar's Viewing party or St. Patrick's day festivities. *Outside food is welcome! Order food on your phone to have it delivered right to you or bring in some chocolates to eat with your beer. (Some say this is a downside- I say it's awesome.) Norse Bar is an excellent establishment that I encourage everyone to try out. These guys know their stuff and above all they know how to find a beer for you. Norse Bar does it right.

The Norse Bar is a great place to drink good beer, hang out with friends, play games (board or video), and/or watch sports! The bartenders are knowledgeable and always willing to make a suggestion if you can't decide on which beer to drink. You won't be disappointed :-) Cheers!

Great new place in Edgewater near Clark and Devon. Great beer selection with 12 excellent beers on tap and good prices. No food. Plenty of TVs to watch the game. The staff is very friendly and helpful with suggestions on the beers. A great addition to the neighborhood!

  • Michael H.

Finally a good bar in this area!! Great atmosphere, very friendly and knowledgeable owner. Plus there are two Nintendo Wii stations in the back. We played Tecmo Bowl and Punch Out Til the cows came home! No food but they welcome outside food. So grab something from Deluxe diner and get over there!

  • Dave J.

Great neighborhood bar, excellent service and a regularly rotating menu of awesome microbrews on tap. Dog-friendly, plenty of board and Wii games available for use, dartboard, trivia contests on Tuesdays, and television screens every way you turn. All that and exposed brick. Sold!

It's good to have a craft beer bar in Rogers Park, and I'm especially thankful that that bar is Norse. Friendly and helpful staff, a nice casual space, and excellent beer at all times. Their house beer is Lagunitas Little Sumpin' Sumpin', but they also carry taps from breweries like Avery, Dark Horse and Metropolitan, with a nice bottle and can selection to boot. They also allow outside food, which is great on days when you just want a bite to eat and a pint of beer. The bar staff are generous with samples, and always willing to point you in the right direction. It can get loud and rowdy on weekends, which is why I prefer to go during the week or the daytime. Overall, a welcome addition to Rogers Park.

  • Ann L.

This bar doesn't shout at you from the street. No neon, no flash, just brick and wood and an awesome array of craft beers. We stopped in for a quick one and ended up staying for a couple. I had the Finch's Secret Stache Stout which was delicious and not heavy, heavy. He had the Allagash Triple and Boulevard Brewing Double Wide. Yum. Reasonable prices. The atmosphere's homey and the bartender's friendly. He definitely knew his beers. The ladies is spotless, one of the nicer bathrooms I've been in in a while. We'll definitely be back; maybe pick some up some Indian on Devon, I'm talking food here, people, then hunker down at The Norse. A great place to kick back and wonder about the mysteries of life. Will Emanuel break the parking meter contract? After whom is Clark Street named? What should I order next?

This place is great. They have lots of great beers at reasonable prices. The staff is very friendly and they have two tables with Wii systems. It's not a huge place, but I kinda liked that.

The Norse Bar is exactly the type of establishment that every neighborhood should have. You walk in the door and right off the bat you feel welcomed. A cozy atmosphere, big screen TVs viewable from every seat in the house, two Nintendo Wii stations, very friendly and knowledgeable staff happy to take care of you and.....they serve real craft beer! I love that more and more bars are now offering a more thoughtful and flavorful beer selection. Im a beer lover and as Hunter S. Thompson said, "Good people drink good beer." (see Flying Dog Brewery). I really felt like I was in friendly company there. Really good atmosphere. They don't serve food, however you are welcome to order takeout from elsewhere to enjoy here. The place is cool. They've got my business for sure.

  • Allison B.

Hooray for a cool, low-key bar in Edgewater! Not that I haven't spent my fair share of time in the "old man" bars around the neighborhood, but this bar is a welcome change! The bartender/owner was friendly and gave great recommendations for beers (they have an extensive beer list) and the cocktails I've had have been excellent as well. Try the Key Lime Martini if you're more of a girly drinker. They also have Wiis in the back with old school nintendo games and more up to date games as well. Only disadvantage is the lack of jukebox but I'll be returning.

Really good beer selection. The bartender actually waited on our table as well as the bar (it wasn't crowded when my group was there). Wish they had food and comfortable high-top stools. I'd go back for the beer selection. :)
