food is great, I usual dine in but when I'm not in the mood it's just as good the enchiladas verdes (green) de pollo are amazing the sopes are amazing they do deep fry them so beware if you are not a fan. The bistec en su jugo is amazing. I've tried almost everything is a quick and fast place if tou are looking for Mexican food that will be satisfying. No issues just yet.

Good local spot in Portage Park! Their food has pretty good taste and the service is very attentive! The prices are reasonable for the kind of food you get. I always get the "burrito mixto" with steak and al pastor. I will def keep coming back here for more awesome food!!

Whenever i crave a buritto at work i go overe there. Theyre one block away: best chicken and pastor burittos i ever had. Really good honemade salsa for the chips too. TBK can not even compete with them.

Had a steak burrito and was disappointed. The portion size was just right but the meat was grounded and chopped down to the point that it lost its texture. A tad too greasy for me and not flavorful. Service is alright and wait was not an issue. The prices are reasonable but with better options around I will not be back.

Awesome little place! I popped it here on a whim, I was starving and had some time to kill before a hair cut next door. I was greeted with a smile, quickly seated, and served up a bowl of awesome homemade chips/salsa. I kept it simple with a few tacos. Pollo, Lengua, El Pastor. Came out quick and hot! The tortillas were either homemade, or damn close! Great flavor in all the meats. My favorite was the El Pastor. Pollo was great too, and the Lengua was made with care. Great place I will visit again. 4 Stars for now until I try some more food there, but easily a 5 Star place. Very expansive menu with simple tacos all the way to Platillos!

The food here is really good. Nice Mexican furniture, however it feels very crowded. Wish they would take out a table because it's a small restaurant and needs more space for customers to feel comfortable. Friendly staff. My fave is their tacos- specifically asada

what happened, the steak taco meat used to be so good, now it is ground steak like ground beef, why. why. why? now i have to go somewhere else. I am sad of this. Please change back to regular steak not this kibble and bit meat sized steak....

The jamaica and horchata taste delicious! It's your average Mexican fast food restaurant. The guacamole was very good, my daughter pretty much ate a whole order as her meal. The food is decent and the service is good. I only give it 3 stars because although it is good I won't go out of my way to go back.

Taqueria Poncitlan #5 is one of the best Mexican restaurants I have ate from. From the tacos to the chilaquiles to the caldo de pollo. Everything has always been great there I have yet to complain about one of their dishes and I been going to them for almost 5 years. I have called on Saturdays at 11am for 15 people each ordering a dish. There's times when I've ordered 60 tacos and they always have the order ready by noon, lunch time. Food is always made fresh to order and that, to me, is very important. If you are looking for real Mexican food go there. The staff is very pleasant and the new waitress they hired is hands down better than some of the other girls they've had before. I had to just throw that out there 'cause my daughter and I ate in about a week ago and she gave my 3 year old a lot of attention. Keep it up guys!!!

This spot is solid, and a hidden gem, in an area where you may find plenty of Mexican restaurants, but not good Mexican restaurants. Let's face it, most of the time, when you crave Mexican Food, you want tacos, tortas, or a nice fat burrito. Taqueria Poncitlan has this for you, and the carne asada they use is cooked to perfection. In other reviews, I've read about their horchata being on point. Guess what, it is! Delicious and refreshing to be exact. Their mole enchiladas are amazing too, but if you choose to order this from their menu, come with an appetite, because you get plenty of it, served with rice and beans, with a side salad. I have to admit though, that the guacamole wasn't the best I've ever had. It lacked a bit of flavor, and at times, I've noticed their chips to be a bit stale, but don't let that stop you from stopping here if you're in the area, because their typical Mexican choices are quite satisfying.

I had a good first experience with this little Taquería. My al pastor burrito was bigger than a newborn pup and the meat was redder than the devil's dick. Just how I like it! The horchata was passable and the chips were wholesale, but they keep them under a heat lamp, so it's makes a bit of difference. The guac was very good so altogether it was a pleasant meal. The prices were decent and they DO take credit cards if the purchase is over $10. If you live within walking distance, I would recommend a visit.

I was told recently to try this place. I'm glad that I did. This particular area doesn't hold very many good restaurants to pick up a decent meal from. Of course there is McDonalds and my favorite KFC but it is lacking fast establishments when in a pinch. Since I am frequently in the area around dinner time and find myself getting a quick "to tide you over" snack from McD's because of all the school functions we are involved in....I am often left in a pinch without any options. Now mind you , there are other places within a short drive, but seriously , most of the time I don't have the time to get there. Just ONE MORE block down Cicero at the corner of Roscoe is this little restaurant, I probably would not have even tried before the recommendation. Food is very flavorful, fresh and super fast. It sure beats a cheeseburger, bucket of fried chicken, or the $1.00 hot dog we sell at school at concessions. I can actually feel good about the tacos or burritos or torta that I give my kids for dinner without having the major guilts of stopping at mcd's for the upmteenth time. I really like the chips, even if it is from a bag (who cares), and the salsa is VERY good. I really like this place. Although my orders have been limited to tacos, burritos, or tortas so far, I have been super happy with everything. Price is very resonable with good portioned orders as well. I can split a burrito between two teenage kids and call it a meal. So to sum it up, I haven't had a bad experience here. I've ordered take out, and eaten in. As far as little establishments go, I think it is on the "better" side of the scale.. Here you will find a very clean, kind staffed, resonably priced, with good food establishment......that's all i could ask for.

Authentic mexican food at an excellent price! The service is a little slow, but worth the wait for the quality of the meal. I tried lingua (tounge) here for the first time ever; it was hands down the best burrito I've ever had! They have regular meats: steak, chicken, and chorizo, but I like the lingua best!

Run of the mill Mexican joint. The Al Pastor is average, nothing spectacular. The Pozole is on point though, the only thing is I prefer Pork in Pozole and they use Beef. But overall good Pozole is hard to find so I add a star for that.

Here is another recently-opened taqueria in the neighborhood here. This venue was _another_ Mexican take-out restaurant in its previous incarnation. I visited here one afternoon after mailing a big envelope at the post office nearby. I opted for its ground beef burrito (picadillo). For $4.60, it was solidly in the middle for its value. I excluded the tomatoes (It left them out.). Avocado is 50¢ extra [unordered]. I also received its hot sauce (red). I thought this burrito needed the hot sauce. The ground beef itself was average. The lettuce was crispy, albeit underchopped. This was a competent burrito, competently made: Not too big, not too small. I am very comfortable with assigning Poncitlan a three-star rating. I dislike having to scrawl this. This was a venue in which I perceived _I was not the desired demographic_ for it. The print menu is the only place where you will espy English words. As a primary English-speaker, I seemed to be merely tolerated, and not especially welcomed. If your Spanish speaking is better than mine, give it a go in that language and see if you are treated better. [YMMV] Transit options: You will probably wind up on the #54 Cicero bus. It runs twenty hours a day, including every hour that Poncitlan is open. 3400 N. is Roscoe, which is equidistant to both the #77 Belmont & #152 Addison routes. Also, during weekday daylight hours, the #X54 Cicero Express route stops at both of those streets [but not Roscoe]; so you would experience a two-block walk.

I can see this place from my house and walk there if all other options of food delivery and preparation fail. They have been pretty consistent with the food we've ordered - my husband always gets the burrito - but makes amendments to I would say f-it to - no beans, sour cream, extra meat, plus avocado. They get it right every time. I change it up and try their 15 types of dinners, their tasty chilaquiles, nachos (eh, not the best or worst), and whatever is on special. My favorite thing they offer on the weekends is the shrimp cocktail - it's more like a ceviche except for lazy cooks. Whole shrimp, cold tomato soup, onion, avocado, cilantro, onions, and lime - comes with crackers - so good. The question mark for this place is their chips and guacamole. The guacamole has had some devastating results for both me and my husband on more than one occasion and lacks flavor. The chips are cold and as mentioned - come from a bag. No love there. Open early and late, good local choice for take out or sit in. Lots of Mexican families eat here at night and also, people always seem to come in for their fruit drinks.

the area around poncitlan is pretty much devoid of dining options, but this taqueria is worth a visit. the food is quite good, although the tortilla chips are store-bought. the tacos & sopes are pretty big, and two of them (at $1.45-$2.50 each) are enough for a meal.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
