Carnes en su Jugo are the speciality here and they are really the best in the city. It's a stu that contains steak, beans, and bacon! What else can you ask for? I have been coming here since I was a child and I probably bring my kids when I become a parent. I usually come on Sunday's and have learned that it's best when going later in the day. Sunday mornings are completely packed and there is usually a wait. This is the only reason that I'm giving them a 4 instead of 5 stars. They need to work on a system for seating because there has been times with other people have taken a table although I arrived earlier.

Today was my day off, but I would be accomplishing an important milestone in my Yelp life...my 400th. review would be written some time today. I chose the "underground" Chicago institution: Taquiera Los Gallos (the original location). Have you heard of "carne en su jugo?" I had that today for lunch. What did that taste like? You would need to stay with me for the following paragraphs... Before heading to Los Gallos in Little Village on the commercial W. 26th. st., prepare for $30 worth of cash for two (2). Otherwise, there is an ATM onsite with $2.25 surcharge. The current market price for carne en su jugo is $10/bowl. I've seen some pictures on Yelp from the past six (6) months with the price listed on the menu for $9.25. Please be aware of such change. I guess we came here with God's plan. We found an unpaid street parking spot In FRONT OF the taqueria. They do have customer parking across the road. I promise I will get to the food, as you all are anticipating. I just want to make sure I've touched base, in case you're curious about the neighborhood and its surroundings. Ok, are you ready for this? Carne en su jugo literally means "meat in its juices." The soup is consisted of beef, bacon crumbs, radish, cebollita, parsley, avocado, beans, and lime on the side to adjust whatever acidity you want on your soup. Surprisingly, the soup itself wasn't heavy, yet it seemed to function like a comforting agent like a chicken soup, as you would have it when feeling under the weather. In conclusion, I would definitely recommend carne en su jugo, before going to see a doctor in order to save yourself some unnecessary medical bills. They didn't skimp on meat. Personally, I felt $10/bowl was on a higher side. If you buy bulk to take home, I think it's a better deal since you can purchase a large tub from the cashier for $44. They provide the size specifications so you know the volume in each choice of containers. We also had small horchata and limonada. The beverages were decent. The service was adequate. If you choose to dine in, then take a seat. For to-go or phone order, please proceed to the cashier, pay, and take a seat at the waiting room. Yes, they have many chairs in the waiting room. They are busy like queen bees on the weekend, so the best time to come is the during the weekday afternoon, when most adults and kids are still at their work places and in schools.

Loved the food! Upsetting they didn't have chilaquiles, why no chilaquiles? I didn't like that they have chopped up onion already on the table in a bowl for the customers to just serve themselves from. It's kind of gross knowing the onion was there for some other person to dig in. Other than that.. I never went because it didn't catch my attention from the outside but when I finally went in, it isn't a small crowded place; it is a nice place to sit down. Definitly going back! Easy parking lot across the street which was nice too. CASH ONLY!!!! Thanks god I had cash lol.

" Te vas pero volveras a Los Gallos" "You are leaving but you will come back to Los Gallos" Inscription on the plate says it all, Once you have tried their carne en su jugo, you'll be back to this place. It's been a week that I was here and can't wait to go back. I was there more by chance than anything. I was going to grab a bite with a friend and decided to visit a place close to los gallos. That place decided to close early that day. I am glad they did because I got to finally this place. Ordered carne en su jugo and a couple of tacos. Not impressed by the tacos at all but I wasn't there for the tacos so will not hold them for that. The carne en su jugo was perfect. Perfectly cooked meat, beans, and all the toppings on a flavorful broth that makes everything to come together so well. service is a'right and prices are ok. TLG, a must for the carne en su jugo

Taqueria Los Gallos is a Chicago institution for one must-try dish: Carne en Su Jugo. There are now a couple of locations in the suburbs and City, but this one on 26th street is the first and place has been a local favorite for years. Just a couple of suggestions: this place is all about carne en su jugo, which is a Jalisco favorite. If you don't like soupiness of the jugo, try the Carne Apache--decent, and you get all the fixins. Also: BRING CASH. This place does not accept cards, but an ATM is on the premises. Lastly, free parking is across the street in a supervised lot: take advantage of it, since let's not even talk about the ridiculousness of Chicago street parking. One complaint: there has been a definite aguacate/avocado shortage on Los Gallos' dishes--I want my green slices a-plenty!

I've resisted writing this even though I've been here over fifty times, chiefly because I haven't tried the carne Apache yet and I feel that is the threshold for a thorough review. However, it must be said that the taqueros and meseros on weekdays during traditional business hours which are the only times I've ever come are the all-stars of the known universe. Incomparable A-game. I'd been feeling it for awhile and a fellow diner, unsolicited, asked me didn't I think this place was the nazz. When I concurred, he informed me that it was these taqueros, not the weekend ones, who have the magic. Looking forward with trepidation to my inevitable weekend visit. Maybe I'll try the Apache. Regardless of what happens, let it be said now that this place is a fundamental institution of Mexican cuisine. ¡El mejor!

The tacos have fallen off a bit here but the carne en su jugo is by far one of the best ive ever had. I personally steer clear of the burritos here after a bad experience though. They do have a small parking lot across the street with an attendant which is nice. Dont really have anything bad to say about the staff or anything else really.

What can I say about Los Gallos but bravo! On the corner of 26th and Kedvale, it is relatively known for their tacos, but do not be fooled, their is more to them than meets the eye. Carne en su jugo, their signature dish. A blend of different meats soaking in their own broth, with frijoles de la olla, and a side of onion, cilantro, chile and avocado, the perfect cure for when you are looking for a hearty soup. I always find that it tastes better in the morning for me, around ten o'clock, however you can have it whenever you want, but make sure you get their before they run out or you will be kicking yourself. Although their carne en su judo is delicious, the rest of the food is good, but can be better. The tacos average, and If you are thinking of their burrito I would pass, but please check out their tortas, they are pretty good. -José

I can honestly only judge there burritos. They are pretty good and extremely big! You probably won't eat it all either. I mean they really put alot of meat no skimping on that. They make there food pretty fast right there for you to watch. It can get really packed times and they have there win parking lot which isn't that big BTW.

What an amazing experiece. Their Jalisco style food is off this radar. Their country side Jalisco dishes such as carne azada en su jugo and steamed meat style tacos are well executed. Their sea food is authentic and very abundant. Make sure sure tou get a side order of grilled onions for only a buck. The tacos de cabeza and lengua are $2!!!!!. The menudo is a must, they even have a kit with dried peppers, oregano, limes, cilantro, chopped onions, etc. Just like walking into Tepatitlans or Aranda's food markets.

Warning.....dont eat here Me and my family went to eat here, they had 3 bottles of chile on the table, one huge plastic canister of peppers with carrots, but never had chips, then we ask we wanted chips, they said they wont make them, we ask that we will buy them, they said they still wont make em, the waiter says the owner rather have the customers order more food than give out free chips on the table, cause gets this!! The customer won eat more food....and then I said, damn then how many plate ask you think one customer can order if they don't have NO chips before eating???? How fricken stupid....that means the peppers and chile is just there for looks....very dumb resturant I say,, they can keep there food And shove it in there ass....,,very expensive for small tacos....id rather eat shit than there food here..we left asap. Save your money, and go somewhere else...this place is better off closing three doors....there is plenty of great Mexican food restaurants to eat that doesn't have a cheap owner that doesn't wana give there customers. Free chips....

I've been coming to this place ever since I was a kid but no more. Their carne en su jugo is great but their customer service is horrible, even before you get seated. After waiting for a table for about a half an hour I had to fight with other patrons to reclaim specific table I was waiting on to be cleaned. After this happens a couple times while the host is just looking at your direction without doing anything about it or providing any guidance, you just need to get the hell out!

For some reason it says closed today(Saturday) but it's definitely not. This place is excellent, as close to a real Mexican environment as I've ever been to. I was referred here by family for the tacos and I wasn't disappointed. Also, as I waited, the owner at the cash register asked if I had tried their soup (carne en su jugo) because it was mentioned on the food channel. He offered a sample in one of the small bowls they have, if you've never had this soup, it's something you need to experience yourself at least once if you looking for authentic quality Mexican food. Also, when you first enter, your greeted by a gentleman ready to take your order with a notepad which is something you find often done only in Mexico. After paying you can walk out through another set of doors which leads to the panaderia. If I lived in Chicago this would be a place I would frequent.

I find this place to be very good for there Carne en su jugo. It is a must try! There tacos dorados are also good. But they only have them on fridays.

Carne En Su Jugo - I'm hooked. I'm getting this once a week now. Real meaty and very tasty.

I have not eaten here in a looooong time -looks like it was 2009! However, tonight my husband brought me some "carne en su jugo" -or "meat in its own juice"...it's like a meat laden soup with pinto beans. Then you can add all these fun sides liked chopped onions, jalapenos, radishes, cilantro, dried roasted peppers, avocado and a dozen tortillas. This may be just as good as the pozole I had recently. It was a tasty and filling meal. I really liked it so we will have to find excuses to go to 26th street and pick some up!

Best tacos in Chicago in my opinion... I wasn't a fan of Mexican food before til my friend Frank, took me to eat some tacos here... Completely changed my mind about Mexican food.. The food was VERY good. The tacos were the best tacos I've ever had. This place is a must !! The only thing is that don't accept credit cards. They do have an ATM inside the restaurant. Cash only ....

This place used to be amazing! The best carne en su jugo in Chicago. Not no more, the carne en Su jugo is salty and now their smaller portions and it basically a 10.00 soup with steak & beans and the dressings. Their tortas are just pain bad. They need to get back to the way it used to be. Look out if you don't like something they will not replace it or give you your money back.

I saw this place on Chicago's Best and on a lonely Friday night I decided to try it. They're famous for their "Carne en Su Jugo" soup. This is a very tasty soup. It's filled with steak, beans, radishes, onions, avacodo slice and other stuff. It's a very hearty soup. The broth of the soup is the star of the show. If I just had the broth i'd be good. It also comes with corn tortillas. I'm going back to get some more. It was a little pricey though ($9.00), but it was a good sized bowl and filled with goodies. I also had a steak taco. Just to try it to make sure they weren't trying to fool me on the steak. It was a good steak taco. There was aslo the typical green or red sauce. Nothing special about the sauces but the green had a little more flavor and brought out the flavor in the meat more. The service was great and very friendly and my waiter spoke very good English. You know how you go to taco joints and you have to sign and point to the stuff you want. I didn't have to do that here. As I was paying my tab at the counter the guy asked me "Did I enjoy the soup, how did it taste?" I thought that was nice of him to actually want feedback. Yep! I'll be back.

Growing up this was always our families choice to eat at. Now that we live out of state we make sure to eat here when we visit! The tortas and tacos de carne asada are delicious! The horchata is not a disgusting mix and always on point! The area is sketchy, but still worth the trip. If your worried about the area just go during the day and tip the parking guy across the street to watch your car. Great authentic Mexican food!

  • Dan S.

You have to get the the carne en su jugo, (spelling?)which is essentially beef soup with tons of awesome stuff in it. It's really amazing. I think it was about $9. They also make great tacos and all the regular Mexican staples you would expect. If you don't know the neighborhood, I'd advise you to go during lunchtime and not wander off. CASH ONLY.

I stumbled on this place at an odd hour of day and it was packed! When I took my first bite, I knew why it was so packed... it was really darn good. I had two steak tacos with rice and beans for $6! Juicy, well seasoned meat and large servings of rice and beans. Here's a few tips. The line at the register is for people who are ordering to go or paying. Sit down at any table and some will bring you a menu. When you are done go up to the register and tell them your table number - they have your bill. If you need anything while eating, grab one of the several attentive people walking around for help.

Tacos here are sooooo good and not greasy like other places. The wait staff is kind and friendly. I highly recommend even on a quick visit to Chicago. I took out a star because the restroom is gross.

so me and my boyfriend was watching the blackhawks game 5 last night against the wilds at his buddy's place with a bunch of guys. it was 4-1 and we knew for sure we won. when the score got to 5-1, guys being guys they were hungry and wanted to celebrate. someone mentioned mexican food and danny immediately told us we have to try this place. we drove from bridgeport all the way to this place after picking up a couple more people. it was worth the drive even tho it was rainy and foggy and just nasty out. the windows of the van was so fogged up, we cant quite orient ourselves or know where we were going. luckily it was close to midnight so we found parking at the front and just ran in. we sat down and danny just ordered for us. he told us to trust him plus he's the mexican of the group. within 10 minutes the food came, we all had soup. it was the best soup ever. it was simple. just beef and beans and soup. there are sides of wedges of lime, diced onions, sliced radish, wedges of avocados, finely chopped cilantro. you put however much you want in your soup and whatever you want. of course there were the homemade hot sauce and pickled vegetables on the table that we could put in as well. i put everything in there. it was loaded. i wasnt even hungry but it was so good i finished the entire bowl. now that i know about this place, im sure to come back again

Most delicious carne asada tacos ever. I first tried this on a visit to Chicago a year ago and craved it for a whole year back at home in Phoenix, AZ. Now a year later, I've finally moved to Chicago and the first thing I ate when I got here was Los Gallos. YUM!

  • Angelica S.

Their tacos de asada are pretty good but don't go during the week because if it's slow they keep reheating the meat which is all burned once they give it too you, go on the weekends that's when they sell more and you will get fresh meat

This is some good stuff! I typically get their carne en su jugo and a ceviche tostada. Never been disappointed here!

I was near pulaski and cermak picking up auto part for my brothers auto repair shop "Madison Discount" in the westside of Chicago. I actually used my "current location" feature of yelp app on my iPhone and searched tacos. Taqueria Los Gallos came out and so i went to try it. I was not so impressed with the dining in area or the bathroom but again what are your true expectations for a taco joint. I ordered steak tacos and the toppings are only cilantro and onions. If your a TBK fan with all the cheese and sour cream, this is not the taco place for you its more authentic here. They also put their special hot sauce spread on the torita but i added some more of the red sauce that i asked on the side. The steak was juicy and not over cooked and i love authentic tacos. they also give you some pickled vegs was ok not great. I found out their open till 4am on Fridays and Saturdays, perfect if your in the neighborhood late. I would of gave them five stars if the place was decorated and cleaned up a bit, but the food was awesome!!!!

This is a solid Taqueria. I go here for the carne en su jugo, which is served daily. While it is not the best carne en su jugo I've had, it is the best value. A hearty bowl with everything (onions, radishes, & avocado), is less than $8, quite the deal.

every mexican food joint prepares there food differently, this place is best for burritos, huge burritos, i dont like cheese or sour cream, so i replace them with avacado and bacon, OH YEAH its good, all this for about 5 bucks! on the weekends i go for the Menudo, big'ol bowl for five bucks awsome after a night of drinking, dont forget the mexican coka-cola, they also give you a side if veggies onions and cilantro, and chiles arbol, and about a dozen tortillas, FOR FIVE BUCKS, they also have tacos de tripas that are great, i like mine crispy, its a huge spot so ttheres always somewhere to sit, try it you will never go to taco bell again. and sorry but it use too be 24/7 but not no more, i think it closes at 12:00 or 1:00 am

Their horchata si horrible; I think it's made from the powder you buy at the store. Their tortas are really small and they put avocado in my torta, but it was seriously the size of a quarter. The food didn't really have a zesty taste.

Love the Carne en su jugo which is what they are known for. great tacos the burritos are huge and I love that they put rice in it. Great desserts and they now have a Panaderia next door that is just as good. Only negative for me is that they still only accept cash....there is street parking but they also have a small lot across the street that is free.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
