I have been riding passed this place for a minute. Finally decide to stop inside after work. When I walked inside I was greeted with a friendly smile. The decor was amazing. I decide on the steak taco dinner tht comes with rice and beans. I couldn't wait to get home to taste this meal. The smell of my food was kicking in while I was driving home. Once I got home and started to eat um I was well satisfied with my taco dinner. The only thing my rice was a tad too salty. I had to mix my rice into the beans to kill some of that salt. Other than the rice being salty. I have no complaints about this place. I will be back again. I will just remember to let them know not to put any salt on my rice

This taqueria is very good and consistent when it comes to certain items. These would be the Pastor, chorizo, and chicharon. The tacos are a bit pricey but are overwhelming in your choice of meat. They serve tacos in the larger tortillas that make it worth the price.

I went to this taqueria because it was featured in Chicago's best well it is like every other restaurant featured on TV they show one thing and reality is not I was because the brag about tacos al pastor being original meat cut from the trompo ,it is not it is cooked in the grill ,also same with the size of the tacos they are small not regular size like some one mentioned steak taco the meat is bland and crispy no flavor ,orchata has a good flavor woud not go back and do not recommend as being authentic Mexican tacos specially tacos al pastor also they did not tripas tacos

Meh... I had high hopes after the positive reviews but after an overpriced dinner including $8.00 guacamole that was in edible due to be overwhelmingly limey. For dinner I went with the tampiquena that was an overcooked thin skirt steak with the only redeeming quality being the enchilada, I was asked if I wanted spicy or mild and I said mild but everything was so spicy. with all the great taquerias in the chi I would skip this one. Go for Las asadas on western instead.

To date, one of the best Steak Burritos and Al Pastor I've evah had. Thanks to Anthony M's constant raving and mouth-watering photography, I hit this place up..making a trek from the far Southside of the city. It was late-ish and I'd been making merry...repeatedly...which left me craving some tasty Mexican fare. My friends were kind enough to humor me and agreed to try a new joint out; this rarely ever happens so needless to say, I was on a serious high from not getting outvoted as we made our way into the mean streets of Chicago with one seriously crabby designated driver. Even though we snuck in JUST before closing time, we received fresh chips, amazzzzing salsa (the Verde is yum) and were served up killer fare with not only a smile, but a side of freshly-grilled jalapeños. Their Ribeye Burrito and Al Pastor were outstanding! The people here are a sheer delight...customers as well as the staff. I have since returned, sober, *ahem* and my meal was equally stellar. Craziness! Although this delightful slice of the Barrio is a tad far from me to enjoy regular visits, Taco el Jalisciense, my waistline wholeheartedly thanks you for the distance between us. Muchas Gracias!

The burrito was amazing... I was in a rush because our lunch break is short but food was good once I got it.

I wanted to love this place and had really high hopes based on the reviews. Unfortunately, it was a bit of a let down. I ordered a steak and a chicken taco, with a side of rice n beans. The rice n beans were delicious and seasoned well! The tacos, however, were both seriously lacking in the flavor department. Super bland. If, it weren't for the fixins' on the taco I probably wouldn't have finished them. I've also had way better salsa verde. Maybe I went on an off day? I dunno. I might go back to try some of the other items. But I won't be in a rush.

Good cheap tacos that are quick. You can't ask for anything more! There have a nice parking area so that you can run in and out of there easily. The serving sizes are good for the money. You can jose to eat inside but it's kind of tight. It does remind me of a place that you might find in Mexico which adds some cool points to it.

Food smelled amazing, However i,order the chiquilies and it was dry. I will come back to try the tacos

Crazy delicious. Best carne asada tacos I've ever had. Super tiny taco shack, with parking in the rear. Don't bother with cheese and sour cream- the meat speaks for itself.

I am in a food coma right now! This is by far the best taqueria I have ever been to, and I frequent taquerias often. I got the vegetariano burrito and it was the size of a newborn baby. It was a burrito angel! I highly recommend this place.

We came here for lunch two a few days ago. Prior to that, we've only had dinner here. I would say that the food is much more fresh and delicious during the day time. We got the usual: 3 taco plate with al pastor it comes with rice and beans. Their so al pastor is delicious! I feel that the portion of their rice and beans are very small compared to other places (DOS amigos, my other favorite Mexican place) also we got their rib eye burrito with grilled onions. This burrito is really yummy. The rib eye is nice and juicy and their tortilla is buttery goodness. You can't go wrong ordering their horchata. Best horchata around! Don't order their guacamole though, not the best. And the bf thought the salsa can improve. They are more pepper, chili based, not tomato so they are quite runny in consistency. We ordered a side of pico de gallo for $1, the total came to almost $30. I'd say that the for is sort of expensive in my opinion. It is still not my go-to place but it will suffice for my taco cravings.

It's interesting reading other reviews. Some have complained of how the tacos just aren't good (totally subjective, I respect your opinion, don't necessarily agree with it), how it's a small place (can't do anything about that), or that they charge you extra for everything (avocado, cheese, etc., etc.). I know you don't know me nor do you care, but I disagree completely with that last bit. I understand that American tacos have all that extra stuff, but honey, you came to a place called Taco el Jalisciense - not Taco el Americano. It's like going to an Indian restaurant, ordering a breakfast burrito, with extra chorizo, and complaining it doesn't taste anything like the tikka masala you were expecting. Yeah, try figuring that one out, I got a bit confused myself. The tacos are as good as you can get, and quite authentic. Everyone raves for the al pastor, and yes, it's pretty good; but I personally enjoy the asada. Order your tacos with grilled onions, lovely way to have them. The taste and cozy confines really take me back to the tacos one would find walking down the streets of a Mexican city (could it be someplace maybe in Jalisco, hmmm? curiouser and curiouser. . . ), people behind the counter always have a smile on their faces (at least the times I've been there). Guess my only complaint is that since it's at a weird little intersection, parking is a little interesting. I gave four stars because, I don't know, I just don't feel like giving five. The aforementioned tight spaces, and all that, I guess. So, quick recap: tacos, good, authentic; service, smiley, friendly; cramped space that they can't really help.

I eat a lot of Carne Asada tacos, and definitely sample the fare around Chicago, and they have some of the best I've had. Super fresh and high quality. I'll be back.

I need to stop going to Mexican restaurants based on good reviews. I am almost always disappointed, as was the case at Taco el Jalisciense. Maybe I ordered the wrong things?? Mmmmm, not sure. Steak tacos were good - not great, but out of everything we had they were the best of the bunch. I also got a "ground meat taco" - it was terrible - meat was like unseasoned greasy meat mush. I took one bite and could not finish the rest of my meal. The salsas were ok - nothing major. The green was the better of the two. The Agua de Tamarindo was not good at all - lacked in flavor. The rice and beans were ok - again, nothing great. When we got the total, we could not believe it - over $30 for 6 tacos with rice and beans and two drinks. I was shocked...totally not worth it. I think I will stay loyal to my tried and true favorites. Also, please note that the price per taco will go up as you ask for things like avocado or sour cream... People working there are very nice, but that's just not enough for me to return.

    (2)
  • Joshua K.

Ignore the critical reviews, this is the best. Want a veggie burrito that's both authentic and delicious: go here. All salsas are delish, Verde is the best when it's on the hotter side. Fast and friendly service as well.

The owner is the cook and he takes pride and care when cooking. For instance I watched him seasons the rib eye steak before grilling the steak over an open fire. Where he then baptized the meat with a lime season juice. I mean everything this guy season is to perfection. I ain't Mexican but I sure love the authenticity of his food and I appreciate the fact none of his dishes have been americanized..

I was recently flipping through the channels, when I happened to see channel 11 showing al pastor meat being slow cooked on a pit... my mouth watered instantly! !! As I was going to change the channel I was more amazed to see the place was located 15 minutes away. I ordered to go and the TV did not do justice to those tacos! The al pastor was amazing! Their red hot sauce was the first to actually make me regret adding the whole cup on it! Great Al pastor!

  • David M.

My new favorite taco place in Chicago. It's the most flavorful chicken taco I've had, and the chicken might be their _least_ delicious taco. The tortillas don't crumble or break apart like most corn tortillas. Even the rice and beans are delicious. Everything's spicy, so if that's not your thing, beware, but for heat-seakers like me, this place rocks. My only beef is the small seating area. Get there early or get takeout if it's bad weather.

I did end up here on Friday night and for that I'm thankful. The food was awesome and the price was right! Given that it's just 2 blocks from my house, I think I'll be there at least once a week from now on. My partner wanted the carne asada tacos. I was curious about the chile relleno burrito. Both were fabulous. I'm thinking just about everything here is going to be wonderful. I can't wait to go back! As a matter of fact, I don't have dinner plans for tonight....

I happened across this place one day while getting lost on my way back from the unemployment office. When you're on your way back from the unemployment office, you're looking for good, you're looking for filling, but most importantly, you're looking for cheap. Fortunately, this place hit on all three points, good, filling and cheap. Really, it is just your basic taco stand, probably A-Ok at 3 stars, but I've giving it an extra star just because it's wedge-shaped, on one of those sharp corners you find along the diagonal streets. Gotta give props to places that make good use of those buildings.

a gem in the middle of nowhere. ok, maybe not exactly nowhere since it's right down the street from feed a few blocks, but it's pretty easy to pass by if you were looking for it. i was lucky to finally stumble in there after a year and a half of passing it by for other things going to and from my office in one of the lofts on west carroll nearby. man, was i missing out on some quality tacos. it's not haute cuisine to say the least. it's simple street food done right. and in it's simplicity is it's virtue. since i came across it, i've moved my office further east. now i find myself going out of my way to pick up lunch here. it's small, a bit divey, and you'll probably question why you bothered coming in once you walk through the door. though, once you dig into the grub you'll find yourself satisfied with a decent plate of food at a fair price. definitely one of my fave mexican street food spots in town.

The Tacos al Pastor were great! I liked them even better when I ordered a second round and asked for them on flour tortillas. Hard to stop eating, even when full. Can't wait to go back and try other items along with a side of Tacos al Pastor. Way out of the way, but well worth the trip. We saw this on the "Chicago Best" tv show. I have tried several of their recomendations, and have been pleased.

i have to admit to being turned onto this restaurant after seeing it on that new chicago show on ch. 9 .. well ever since seeing it (this past) sunday ive had a craving for tacos.. as soon as i walked in i saw the dude (the owner) w/ his big zz top bushy ass beard and as cheesey as it may be i said " hey i saw you you on the t.v." (-lol) he then proceeded to smile, talk to us and thank us for coming in. (he even pulled out the chair for me and handed us menus) - Wot service eh??? the place itself it totally quaint and has a great atmosphere about it. we came at the perfect time there was no one there (which is usually for me a scary sign in a restaurant - but i thought wot the hell the guy on the tv said it was good.. so why not try it) needless to say we had just come @ the perfect time because before we even got our orders in the place filled up. granted only about 10 ppl fit in there at a time.. but still.. good timing on our part) ((i must say that while waiting on our food i over heard atleast 3 ppl walk in there and say " yeah we saw you on tv" - which made me feel like way less of a dork. :] )) and i must say that the pineapple pastor was GREAT. good size tacos, decent price. AMAZING RED HOT SAUCE. freshly made chips... i had 1 taco de lomo encebollado.. w/ a little red sauce... mmmmmmhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SO GOOD. i also had 1 tostada de Pastor also w/ the red sauce and it was equally as delicious . (i took my mom to an early dinner) and she had un taco de chile relleno and i must admit to it being the best chile relleno ive had in a long long time ( my grandma used to make and will always - in my totally bias opinion - make the best stuffed peppers (chile rellenos) but this place def gave her a run for her money in that department. im giving them a 5 star rating on here cuz id def recommend it, and i am MOST DEF going back again. personally i give them 4 out of 5 though, but thats only cuz there still a bunch of other things i want to try on their menu. everything i did try though was a 5 out of 5 though. p.s. whenever i eat out (this only applies to mexican food) i always get a sidral (which is kind of a mexican apple soda - which may sound weird.. but is actually quite good) ive been drinking them since i was a child... well anyways i ordered one and he brought it to me slightly frozen... the top 1/2 inch of the bottle had a tiny bit of ice in it... and OH MY F'ING GOD i must have drank that bottle down in 2 gulps.. it couldnt have been in anyway a more perfect (? grammer?) temperature. im weird.. and sometimes its the little things that win me over big time :] p.s.s. TONS OF FREE PARKING IN THE PARKING LOT!!!!!

The cook is awesome (I think he owns the place) and the rest of the staff is pretty kick a** too. They have great food and I love it. I stop by at least twice a week. Everyone I have brought here agrees with me. Remember don't judge a book by it's cover. This place rocks.

  • Emma C.

We also saw the restaurant on the "Chicago's Best" tv show. The people there were real sweethearts and the food was fresh (guac made to order, the pineapple al pastor is fun), if pretty bland and not a special bargain. if you're in the area with a taste for tacos, it's ok, but sorry, I don't think we will be traveling all the way across the city again for this very standard fare.

A friend turned me onto this place, raving of their tacos. He happened to have a menu and suggested we try it. Being a lover of chile rellenos, I was quite excited to see they offered a chile relleno taco. I ordered one and some other kind of taco I don't remember. The chile relleno taco was enough to fill me up so I don't think I even ate the other one. One thing I would like to note about their food is it's authenticity; all tacos come with the standard onions and cilantro. Last night I drove by here on my way home from work and was craving a burrito. It having been nearly a year since my last dining experience, had forgotten the details of their menu, but was delighted to see they also offer a chile relleno buritto!!! Of course this was my selection. When I got home I noticed how enourmous this burrito was. I had them cut it in half and am now thankful for that. There were two oozing chile rellenos wrapped inside of all your other standard burrito ingredients! Yum! Yum! Yum! I can't wait to eat the other half! I'm giving this place 4 stars instead of 5 because they don't deliver, and their entrees seemed a little too pricey. $11 seems steep for a taco shop (although based on the size of the burrito, the entrees might be enough for 3 meals)! Regardless, I will be returning frequently! Cash Only!

The Pastor here is superior to many taco places in the area. Try it on a torta with fresh avocado...Nothing is better. These guys come from Jalisco state where they know how to prepare meat.

Tacos are AMAZING and made to order!!! Def try the pork tacos. Also service was really good. Owner was very friendly and helpful. Found my new favorite taco stand!! We have been back twice in the last 2 weeks.

  • Yan X.

Went with my friend who saw a Chicago tv show about this place having the best al pastor taco. Both were disappointed but as unexpected. The food was mediocre. Tacos ($2 ea) didn't have enough filling and flavor bland (and I'm not even into spicy!). I've also had better horchata elsewhere. Our taco dinner (3 tacos for $9.95) was also missing the salad (so it's really better to get items a la carte). I saw them heat up our side of rice in their microwave. We didn't see the big skewer of meat spinning at the grill. This place is small with maybe 5 small tables in all with very cute tabletops and wall decor. Definitely would not go out of my way for this. So far, there hasn't been an al pastor taco that is better than Atotonilco #2.

This is a review of a taco stand, not a sit down, fancy restaurant. For a taco stand---Amazing. The difference between this place and the other taco stands I have reviewed, Chavas, Veloz, etc, is they use better meat. It's a step up, but not in price. The steak, the Al Pastor are excellent. They make the guacamole fresh, right in front of you and ask you how spicy you like it. Kind of like they do at Adobo, but without waiting for a girl to walk up and make it. They do it right at the counter. The owner is an awesome guy and always thanks me for coming in. This is as good as it gets for a walk up taco stand. I'm not sure how people on Yelp rate taco stands. What's the criteria, not Taco Bell and it's great? Every mediocre place gets 4 stars. Pasadita lives on it's rep(it is above average) but it's overpriced. Maybe it's exciting for white people to move into the city and get a taco. Wow, brown people, crazy. Wait, I am a white person and I do get excited by tacos. I live for the taco. I love the taco. Trust me, I know the way.

The ultimate local taco spot. Everything, everything is amazing. Their asada is incredible, pastor has flavor for days, but the rib eye, oh man. Huge burritos, cheese dripping quesadillas, and tortilla chips fried up right before your eyes. My favorite Mexican place in the city. Limited hours on Sundays. Cash only.

Excellent Tacos in a weird area of town. This is not a place you are likely to stumble upon unless you are lost. I was introduced to it by a friend who's studio space is nearby. Otherwise, I probably would have never found it. The tacos were top notch, as was the guacamole. The thing that blew me away was that when I ordered a steak taco, there was actual raw steak cooked, not some reheated stuff from a bin. I have never seen this in any other fast food Mexican place in town!

  • Landa D.

I have been on the search for good tacos in the neighborhood where I work... and this place SERIOUSLY missed the mark!! I ordered one steak (based on reviews) and one chicken tacos. The steak was average, but the chicken... omg... I still have no idea what that was. It was not chicken. It looked like a smorgasbord of beef, maybe pork, and burnt residue from the grill!! It was so gross. But what made matters worse was the sauce. It tasted like au jus gravy for roast beef. They only get two stars because the cashier was very courteous and polite. But that food... my stomach is rolling just thinking about it!! Maybe my experience was abberant, but I will never return to find out.

Great small family-run taco joint in Humboldt/Smith Park area! The tip here was that WGN voted their Al Pastor tacos as some of the best, so I had to try one of those. The Al Pastor was nicely seasoned, not sure it's the best I've had in the City, but good. Had a carne asada taco as well, and damn, that thing was flavorful! Got both with cilantro, onions, and lettuce, and added their two kinds of hot sauce for a very tasty and inexpensive meal. This place is super friendly and I'm sure I'll be back to dine-in and carry out. My only tip to the restaurant would be to put the hot sauces on every table. Two bottles on the counter that people had to take to their table then (hopefully) return, is not enough!

Well deserved high Yelp rating. We were looking for a place outside of RiotFest to eat and found this gem a short distance away. Friendly staff made the experience fun, and the food was amazing. I had the huevos rancheros and it was great.

cheap, fresh authentic mexican food. It's a really simple no frills place awkwardly located at a corner of an intersection with a parking lot. The gauc was really fresh tasting and made on the spot. highly recommended!

A great little taqueria that I'm happy to know is right by my office. The al pastor was really flavorful. The staff is friendly, and there is a lively but cozy atmosphere in that little space if you choose to eat in. Oh, and they have parking! I'm looking forward to making this place my go-to lunch spot on the days I actually have time to take a break from work. My one wish: that their chicken for tacos was shredded.

A little tiny hole in the wall but the steak burrito was top notch. The staff was friendly. Overall I'm very happy with this place.

I have been in here a number of times over the years and it is one of my favorite tacos in the city. I have had the chorizo, carne asada and of coure the most delish al pastor. The small staff is always friendly and fast. And although the space is small it is charming and clean.

I like this place, ranking at number two. I went to 3-4 taco places to determine which place is the best around Chicago. I found this place on Chicago's Best so I gave this place a try. I had the steak tacos and the tacos al pastor. The steak is juicy and seasoned well. The pastor is also juicy, but falls short behind that from my number one taco joint. The taste is close to par with that from my number one taco joint; however, the texture here is homogeneously consistent (like pulled pork). There are no crispy chunks of deliciousness. A highlight from here is the amount of meat on their taco. The meat-to-tortilla size ratio is great. Lots of deliciousness per taco. The ratio is higher than that from my number one taco joint; however, there is not enough "points" to make this place number one. A downside to this place is the size and location of the place. When I arrived here with a friend, we were laughing really hard at the size of the place. My friend was question where I have taken him, but his mind changed quickly after tasting the tacos. This place isn't great for groups more than 4, unless you start moving tables around (If I remember correctly, there were only 4 tables.). The location of the place looks "shady." I sat with my back facing the entrance door. I get the feeling that I should keep my eyes behind my back. If I decide to come back, I am definitely sitting faced to the entrance. Overall, I would recommend this place if the my number one taco joint is not available.

Great service!! Amazing food!! So worth it. Plus it's my uncles restaurant too so I love it even more. Their pastor, tripa, carne asada, chicken, chile relleno everything is amazing. Everything is fresh and you don't have to wait a while to get your food.

Had to check out this place today cuz its close and I was starving. Got the pastor and asada taco and ate in so free chips and salsa as well. The green salsa is best. Red was meh. The chips were crispy and fresh. They are extremely generous with the meat so I could have made four tacos out of the two..but I made 3. Loved the pastor..very flavorful and moist. The asada was alright. Would definitely come back for more..and next time I'll try the burrito based on other reviews. Very sweet lady behind the counter taking orders. The area really isn't as bad as some people make it out to be. And there's a free parking lot!

Ode to Burritos: that cheese, rice and beans called pinto. All wrapped and salsa'd in steamed dough. A cheap treat to eat in the street when there's no place else to go to eat those burritos. All hail, burritos! El Jalisciense's grilled onion and ribeye steak burrito to be exactamundo. They even top off my horchata before I hit the road with my to-go burrito. Muchas gracias! Te quiero burrito =d

This was by far the worse steak I've ever tried. I'm reading other reviews wondering if these people were paid to lie on here.

Good, if not great Tacos, and incredible Burritos. The Ribeye Burrito, as commented here, is phenomenal. The staff is extremely friendly. The eat in experience, while a bit cozy / cramped, is pleasant, with complimentary chips + salsa and decent horchatas. The area can seem bleak, but if you are in the neighborhood, this is one of your best taco (and clearly your best Burrito) options.

The woman behind the counter was the nicest person ever. I wait for the bus right outside this place sometimes six days a week and I can always smell the food from inside and my mouth begins watering. I kept telling myself, some day I am going to try this. And I kept putting it off and putting it off until finally I woke up early one morning and went there for lunch before heading to work. I ordered a steak burrito; which was the first time I have EVER in my entire life ordered steak over chicken, but I am so glad i did! It was juicy and perfectly cooked and seasoned. Just writing this review has me wanting to go back immediately. The complimentary chips and salsa were delicious as well. I really liked the kick in the spicy salsa. The prices were very reasonable and I enjoyed the small and friendly atmosphere. As some reviewers mentioned earlier, this is not a place to come with a big group of people if you plan to dine in, but it is definitely a place you need to check out as soon as possible. You'll thank me later!

This spot is a gem. IMO they have the best burrito in the city. If you're into chicken burritos and want the grilled, seasoned chicken (not the pulled crap) then come here. I've had the steak burrito too which amazing. Great service on top of it. Super friendly.

I was driving pass this place me and my family decided to do a u-turn an go back for tacos. It was about 7:30 p.m. on Sunday I walked up to the door and a lady said they where they were making a movie. There were no cameras, no signs on the doors or windows to say that the establishment was closed temporarily. The lady told me that they where having a meal for cast only. There were at least ten other people in the parking lot they where wondering why was it closed and I said what the lady told me they making a movie. I felt this was bad business due to no manager was available to talk to the customers. I've never eaten here and due to the occurrence that happened I never will. Thats why Chipotle is wiping out all the taco places!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So bummed I was not more pleased with Jalisciense after reading the other reviews.. Admittedly I ventured here after seeing the special on Chicago's best.. and was greeted when I entered with "ahhh how many pastor tacos would you like". If you are serving al pastor in Chicago and you cannot make the spit roaster visible to the front counter something is wrong. When i don't see it, it makes me think the meat was pre-prepared and then tossed into holding chamber for a while.... and that is exactly how this al pastor tasted. It did not have that fresh crispness of al pastor... it was almost soggy. I ordered steak tacos as well and these were WELL BELOW the standard of steak tacos in such an affluent neighborhood.

This place is just fantastic. If you want some quality mexican food that is not going to cost you an arm and a leg...then you need to go here. Everything is so good. My favorites are the Rib-eye Burritto...the meat with the grilled onions just tastes so good. I also love there ground beef too...it is closer to a picadillo. Fresh Guac is made to order...I recommend going with a medium but even that can be too hot. Chips are also made fresh to order...nothing like a hot chip freshly salted after being pulled from a deep fryer! This place is family run and the owners are really nice people too. Quality food and Quality Customer Service...two things that are hard to find in a fast food environment. So if you are in the area and looking for some good food...I recommend you stop by!

Have been going here for almost five years. All have to say is this place us amazing. Friendly and fast service. Skilled cooks and the best marinated steak in the city!! Room to sit while you wait for your order. Large burritos, stuffed to the gills tacos and Jarritos in multiple flavours !! These guys are great at what they do!

The food is brilliant! High quality ingredients and excellent flavor, better than I ever expected! Since my first time in I have eaten here every other day or so... I have even gone for lunch AND dinner in the same day. I can't stop! I keep trying new things, but I always come back to the tacos, unreal! ...and the kind lady working the counter says to me as I walk out the door, "See you tomorrow!" Yes, you probably will!

Five stars, given in memory of this once legendary, yet now seemingly closed, taco stand. I never even had the chance to say goodbye. Countless nights have I drunk-dialed them, hoping against hope that the ZZ Top-bearded guy (who I think owned the joint) would pick up, and make me one more batch of those overly-stuffed, cilantro and onion tacos with queso, crema and avocado. But alas, they are no more, so back to Huantitan I go, gangbangers, panhandlers, shitty meat and all. Life is, indeed, unfair.

I am ashamed that it took me so long to eat here. Awesome food! Fresh, fresh, fresh! The guys that work here are fantastic! Friendly with everyone and they definitely know their regulars! There was a steady crowd, very eclectic mix (everyone from local families and business types to grandma and construction guys) and everyone seemed very comfortable and happy to be there! I haven't stopped talking about it all day... This is my new "go to" taco place. I cannot wait to take everyone I know!!!

O.K so we already have reviews about the food.I'm going to disagree and just say that it was O.K. I have had better in Chicago with a less creepy experience...The place looks creepy on the outside and there was a dude obviously doing some type of drugs in his car with a needle..Since I was tipsy and hungry I just walked on past to get my grub. When we got inside the cashier seemed a little annoyed that we needed a minute to look over the menu.My Hubbie wanted a Ribeye and onion burrito, but we were told that they were out of ribeye.I ordered 1 Al Pastor taco and one steak taco,he settled for a steak Torta. We were immediately corrected on our pronunciation of said foods.."You Mean TORTAAAAAAAA" "You mean Al PAsTOOOOR" WTH? I'm pretty sure that we said it right the first time.As we waited we noticed all the pictures of the alligators on the wall and all the pictures of a DEAD GUY posted on the cash register and on the back wall......O.K. Then I saw the cook take some precooked steak meat out of a big white thing to reheat it...my steak taco was OK but dry and that was the reason why..I'm all about saving time in the kitchen but that's not cool..thin strips of steak don't take that long to cook. Finally we were asked if it was "for here or to go" but ALL of the chairs were put away so why even ask us that? the store was not set to close for another 2 hours,Why are all the chairs up so early? My steak taco was O.K. it was good once I added lime, the hot sauce there is gross and they only gave me one kind. The Al pastor taco was weird..and at first I thought it was a steak taco, then I remembered those pictures of the alligators and my mind went all kids of places. My Hubbie said the Torta was really good but he can do his own review.

If you think you ate a good taco, you should come and try out the tacos they have here! Very affordable food and I have to say much better then burrito king or any Mexican restaurant that I've been to. Everyone is very friendly that works here and its overall a great place to eat. It could be a little bit cleaner, but other than that the food is GREAT!

Ok then... So my wife and I live in an absoloute sh*thole of a neighborhood, but we also happen to live less then 3 blocks away from another famous taco stand located on North Ave just before Pulaski. Out of respect and much love for Jalisiense, I won't name them here. Suffice it to say this unnamed place had my grudging yet regular business for almost 20 years. However, after one too many endless searches for a parking spot and being accosted by the panhandlers, we decided to give this little unassuming place at Chicago and Grand a shot. After all, we both remembered the days when this location was empty, and the present owner had left a note on the door saying, "I WANT TO RENT THIS STORE. PLEASE CALL ME" followed by his cell number. THIS is our taco dealer. Our unashamed pusher of carne asada tacos with cilanto, onion, queso, sour cream and avocado. THESE are the soulless fiends who, when we walk in, simply have to ask, "How many? 10 or 12?" These evil ghouls who worship Santo Toribio even know what soft drinks we prefer, and have the unmitigated temerity to have 2 Sprite and 2 Coke bagged for us even before the door has closed and our wallet is out. They've cursed us. We're doomed. We can't vouch for the rest of their menu, because we're going to be found dead one day with their damnable corn tortillas found strewn about our bodies, having given up on being civillized and choosing to just consume the hedonistically delicious taco filling and red sauce with our fingers. PS - Out of respect for the genuinely good folks at Jalisiense, I must state that I'm joking when I call them evil, soulless ghouls. I hope they understand that I hold them in the highest of esteem, as I do Santo Toribio. I love these people. They;ve gone out of their way to make their customers happy, and I only wish they'd let me buy them a drink every now and then!

My younger brother never gets excited about anything. His usual response is "yeah its ok." Since last week he called me roughly 4 times to try the worlds best Tacos El Pastor. Based on his excitement I knew that this place was going to be legit. Let me just quote MC Hammer these tacos were "2 legit to quit". I took down my 2 tacos el pastor in roughly 1 minute and did not take any breath for air. They were amazing. I am already looking forward to my next meal to go their again. My brother goes to this place twice a day. Anyways hands down best tacos I have ever had, and I have eaten a lot of tacos. Also the staff is super friendly. Anyways get off your couch and go get some tacos. This meal will be the best five dollars ever spent.

A great little taco shack. We've eaten in a couple times, which is a bit cramped but does in a pinch, but more often, we take it away. They're really good with letting you customize your order a bit if you'd like. Their veggie tacos are solid; their meat tacos are better (but obviously not an option for vegetarians). Their guac always seems almost impossibly fresh, and the chips are freshly made, too (which also means that they aren't as good a day later).

This place is a great addition to the area, especially as there are comparatively few businesses on this stretch of Chicago Avenue. As for the glowing reviews about the food, well, it's good, but not nearly as great as others make it out to be. All in all, Taco el Jaliciense offers solid, but not exceptional, taqueria fare.

  • Melly C.

I love this place! It's cheap and quality. The al pastor is incredible. I always get carne asada too and that is delicious, they cook it just right. Never burned. Their salsa verde is spicy as hellllll. I wish it wasn't that spicy but at the same time, it's unique compared to all the other Mexican places I've been to. A little goes a long way with that salsa. I love how small it is and they prepare the food quickly, the staff is always kind especially the guy with the long beard! I took an Irishman here and now he's addicted to the burritos, once he goes back to Ireland he'll be craving these burritos I am sure.

This is one of Chicago's best kept secrets. The most amazing mexican food in the city! I've eaten here close to 50 times and have never left disappointed. My personal favorites are the homemade chips which are cooked when you order them and the home made guacamole. The picodilla tacos are SO tasty!! Their fresh green salsa is hands down the best in the city but it is spicy!! The service is fast, friendly and the prices are incredibly low. The only con is they don't serve alcohol. The seating is a bit cozy but they have there own parking lot which is a huge plus!! Owners really care about their business and put a lot of love into everything they do. Try it!! I promise you, you will not be let down.

  • Peter H.

Taco el Jaliciense is back! Fundamentally unchanged, still wonderful. Both the pastor and the asada are terrific as they ever were. So run out and get some! This place really is one of the gems of the neighborhood. Welcome Back, Taco J!

Decent; Affordable and Authentic Mexican fast-food joint within walking distance of my home. I ordered guacamole last time I was here and it was made to order - not sure if they let it sit. Chefs are approachable so usually customize my requests to meet my subjective needs which usually results in Good Burritos. Its location is just off the beaten path of the California Ave corridor; on the triangle of land which makes it feel like you're on an island if you sit inside. A well kept secret. Convenient for take-away since they have their own parking lot.

Simple and amazing mexican food. Rib eye tacos with grilled onion are something I crave. Egg and chorizo tacos are magical. Not greasy at all, and my man friend thinks the red sauce is the best int he city. I tried my brother's chicken milanesa torta last night and it was perfection. Everyone who works there is really cool and the place is just solid. Open until 10pm most nights as far as I know.

this meets all my criterion for a great taqueria: -fresh ingredients -fresh avocado -the option of ordering "extra" avocado -vegetarian options for the burritos, tacos, and flautas -something in the vegetarian food besides avocado and lettuce -chile relleno tacos, flan, and horchata -delicious add-on sauces that come with your order (the mole sauce in the red bottle is perfection itself) -you never ever ever leave hungry this is about as delicious a meal as anyone can get for under $7.

Some of the best steak tacos I have had in awhile. Always wanted to try this place out because one of my friends raves about the tacos. The place is small with only 4 tables and a few seats at a counter available for dining in. They do have parking out back which is nice. The tacos were very good, the steak had flavor, the salsa was spicy but tasty, and the fact they have jarritos is always a plus. I will definitely be back to try what has been described as the best pork tacos in the city.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
