I went here last night with a date(who is now my boyfriend) and the food was really good because few places in the city serve authentic mexican food. My date thought it would be a great way for us to get to know each other on the first date and we really liked the food. It was reasonably priced and freshly prepared and we also had a side of chips and guacamole which was prepared fresh as well the chips could have been a little more fresher, but overall the experience was great and the staff is very friendly.

I LOVE this place. I have been coming here since I was a little girl and they always treat me like family here. The food is amazing and cheap. The tacos are warm and great the service is fast and just beyond what I except the cook always greats us so warmly and comes and checks on my table to make sure everything is okay. I am a very pick person about fries and their french fries are the BEST. This is a great place to come and hang out with a group of friends or family. This is my to go place when my family and me decide to go out for tacos.

Really good burritos and tortas...but the real hidden gem here is the FRIED CHICKEN!!! Order it, love it, you're welcome!

  • Rickson W.

for late night 24hr taco/burrito place, you probably won't find all that better place. that being said, they make pretty descent burritos.not the best in chicago but it was good.price is reasonable.on a side note, their tables weren't very clean.

I have always gone here for the ginormous burritos... delicious!

8:30 am Chi-marathon Sunday, out walking the dogs and running an errand to Home Depot. Walking back home with plans to go to McD's for breakfast when we pass by this little joint and see that it's open. Change of plans... Have to say, sausage and egg burrito is really good and the price ($4.99) extremely reasonable given the size. The burrito itself is flaky like a pastry crust and as big as a dinner plate. The sausage is like a hot dog link not crumbled, which usually I prefer the latter but former was really good. Also came with eggs, cheese and peppers. I also asked for beans to be wrapped into it and I thought that was a nice addition (extra cost). Each burrito comes with the salsa verde and chili sauce on the side. It was so big I couldn't finish the whole thing, but two days later and heated up for 2 min in the microwave it was still just as good! Only downside was the time it took to make two burritos. But in all fairness, I think we were the first customers of the morning and the chef was still getting prepped for the day. I'd go back.

The food was great but the personality of the owner(?) was even better. The entertainment while ordering was worth the price of the food. He was so outgoing and his authentic accent is great. The place is super small, but is open 25 hours a day (according to the same enthusiastic gentleman). He tried to push bottled water on you when you order water but that might be the only negative I have. I had a chicken burrito and it was amazing. Gigantic and stuffed full of yummy ingredients.

  • Brett L.

Open 24 hours and food is decent but the employees always have random people in the kitchen with them. Even the guy on Halsted st. that threatens people and talks about killing people is working in back making food!?! When I saw that I walked out and never went back. Something is up with this place because I dont why they would want bums and random people helping them cook and I dont want to know what the street people give the employees in return... Also hand washing does not occur and touching money and touching the food happens all the time.

    (1)
  • Steve M.

While this probably isn't the place to go at 2AM when all the bars on this strip of Halsted empty out (nightmare scenario), it IS a great little joint to get your burrito on if it's relatively early - think "normal" dining hours. The burritos here are serious contenders for my personal "best burrito in Chicago" designation, but I still have to give it to Pasadita. The Taco & Burrito Express style is a delicious one, though: steak, beans, rice, lettuce, cheese and the tortilla. They crisp up the torillas just enough so that you get a slight crunchiness when you bite into the burrito. Every place should do this -- it adds so much!!

Good neighborhood cheap dive Mexican food. Best I have found in the area. I will be returning. Oh, and they are open 24/7. WIN!

  • Lauren B.

Fast, fresh, cheap, and delicious. Love their burriotos and guac.

  • Patrick G.

Decent enough taqueria if you desire a taco or burrito in the area. The prices are pretty similar to any of the other taquerias in the area. The quality is better than the other place across the street. I usually get a chorizo taco or two and they are yummy. They are basically always open so that's a plus when you have a taco craving.

  • Matt R.

Taco and Burrito Express is the best place to go late-night for Mexican food. Please walk the extra 100 feet and skip La Bamba. (Yes, T&B Express will also give you a burrito the size of your head...) Their food is quick and tastes good. Also, the price is hard to beat. All of the food is decent but I think the taco's stand out here. Also, don't forget the Orchata...it is really good here. Also, I want to give a shout-out to T&B Express being open 24 hours...I've been there as late as 4am...and I've seen someone eating there when I was walking to work at 6:45am...pretty awesome!

A light at the end of the tunnel. Changing a flat tire on the little woman's car last night when I see the flashing lights down the street, calling for me. 2 perfect carne asada tacos later, hammering the wheel off for 15 minutes didn't seem so bad.

  • Jim S.

There's not a whole lot bad I can say about this place, other than it's not the cleanest spot in town. Other than that, it's good food for dirt cheap. Literally. A burger and fries (actually a good burger and better than average fries) will run you like $3. A burrito with beans and rice is like $4. There's better food in the area, but if you're really hungry and really poor, eat here and you won't be unhappy you did. It's pretty good food, I have to say. The guys working are pretty good dudes too.

  • Eliza B.

as good as it gets is right... as long as it's been a long night out. This place is perfect for late night, soak up the alcohol food. It's fast, it's mexican, and it tasts great. Nuf said.

  • Brenton G.

Excellent burritos (only thing I ever ate there) and friendly but average service. I like how they cook the burritos to crisp up the tortilla.

    (4)
  • Clayton P.

What a great cheap late night Mexican spot. I would assume the sober do not outnumber the drunk past 9pm in this place. The food is cheap, the salsa is solid and the tacos were tasty. Chicken and Steak tacos rocked it!

    (4)
  • Tomas M.

This burrito joint is second to none. booths have ripped seats and not so clean and cozy, but the food is amazing. perfectly crispy burritos. i like the place so much i bought a few tshirts there. great spot if you go hear blues and want some awesome cheap eats afterwards.

  • Ben F.

I have had nothing but good experiences at this place granted you gotta expect when going into a place like this its no white table cloth establishment. The tacos and horchata are the only thing I ever get and the combination is amazing gotta be the best horchata I have had in chicago and I have tried a lot. All together not a great place for a romantic night but some good late night food.

    (3)
  • Claudia R.

A lot of people stumble in late-night , have a far more satisfying experience than Taco Hell could offer, and stumble out to remember it well for the next drunken stupor-inspired food-fest. I was one of them. But one day I was hungry and not drinking and decided to pop in. The food was STILL good (again, not like Taco Hell). The chefs are friendly and remember their customers. The decor may leave some thing to be desired but like the age-old adage says, "Don't judge a, er, Mexican restaurant by its decor" ... or something like that.

  • Casey C.

This place treats you like family. MY fave mexican food in Lincoln Park for sure. The food is extremely awesome. Love this place give me it all day.

    (5)
  • Eric S.

When near Halsted and Wrightwood in Lincoln Park, skip La Bamba and head directly to Taco & Burrito Express. I made the mistake of going to La Bamba for WAY too long before a friend recommended their steak tacos. I haven't been back to La Bamba since. They use the freshest ingredients here. Treat yourself to some tacos and you'll think you died and went to California. How can you beat $1.65 for a taco? They make everything to order and it will be served hot and fresh - not as a gushy mess like at Taco Bell. In fact, I think it'd be a sin for me to ever eat at Taco Bell again with this place literally out my back door. The guys that work here (and seem to ALWAYS be working here) are so friendly and encourage patrons to strike up a conversation in Spanish. Don't be afraid, my Spanish is terrible and they haven't laughed at me yet. 3 steak tacos fills me up perfectly. I am addicted to the things. Taco & Burrito Express is open 24 hours, so a word of caution if you're going in after-bar. Don't be surprised to see a pile of puke in the bathroom and someone passed out on the front step (true story). During normal daytime hours though, it's always been clean and fresh. They also post their health inspection record from the city in plain sight.

  • Pablo N.

This place has the best salsa around! It's so good and hearty! I went to Taco Burrito Palace down the street and TB Express is way better! the chorizo at express is tastier and everything in general is cheaper. Bigger portions also. I would go here over any other mexican restaurant in lincoln park. the tacos are phenom, they top them with everything. also the nachos are to die for as well. Go for lunch or go at 3am after the bars! It's always good and its 24 hrs!!!

  • Niki C.

I have a love/hate relationship with this place. I love it because the enchilada suiza is just so damned tasty at 4am. I love it because the guys behind the counter used to yell "SUIZZZZZZZZA!!!!!" at me when I walked in. I love it because no cares what you look like (as compared to a place like Allende, where it seems as if you go there less for the food & more for a "Hail Mary" hookup). I hate it because the enchilada suiza is just so damned intestinal-wretching at 9am. I hate it because those guys behind the counter aren't there anymore. I hate it because no one cares what you look like (even if you're holding up nicely compared to the other stumbling idiots who march in here). But mostly, my experience can be summed up in one story. It is both sad & hilarious, simultaneously. We ordered food & took it back to my friends' apartment. We all sat down at the coffee table to inhale the Mexican food. My friend P, in a drunken rage yelled out, "I ASKED FOR A TACO DINNER & THEY GAVE ME A BURRITO!" We told him, "Who cares, just eat your damn burrito." He did as he was told. Moments later, there was a scream of horror. "THERE'S A KNIFE IN MY BURRITO!!!" I, being the least intoximicated, checked. There was, indeed, a plastic knife in his burrito. He went on a tirade, which I promptly recorded on a paper napkin for posterity. Then we went back to Taco & Burrito Expres (sic). Five minutes later, he was back. He sat down, again at the coffee table, & opened his bag. "ARGH!!! ANOTHER BURRITO!!!" So goes another night at Taco & Burrito Expres.

  • Leang E.

There's competition all around this place with Allende and La Bamba, but I like this place best. I know this is a dingy place, but damn there burritos are good! If I am craving a burrito in town, I'm going to Taco & Burrito Express. I just love the way it tastes. Plus, it's so cheap. The sad thing is that I barely come here after a fun night out. I go totally sober, and just shake my head listening to the drunken stupor around me or else I just have to laugh. It's times like that, that make me appreciate not being drunk.

    (4)
  • A.S. V.

I love how the sign misspells "expres". This is purely emergency food, when you're too late for a show or too drunk to care.

  • Iman W.

In my best Beyonce voice: "they be all night, looooove!" Everything in this part of town tends to have an inflated price tag attached, so $1.99 tacos is just...yes. Sign me up, please. Give me chips and salsa on the side too. Thank you. The service was fast and the guys working there were friendly. Everything tasted fresh and oh so yummy. And of course, they're pretty much always open. So you don't have to be ashamed when that taco craving hits you at ungodly hours. T&BE has what you need, baby. As I quoted Beyonce before...yes, they be all night. No surfboards required.

Fast, cheap tacos that are pretty good for late night eating. Friendly owner and cooks.. Fresh ingredients. Couple doors down from Kingston Mines.

  • Kiana E.

Their burritos and guac are so good! The tortillas are delicious and the burritos are huge and cheap. The staff is super friendly too. I definitely prefer T&BE over Allendes. Check it out!

WOW I just had the most Amazing Burrito. Love this place. All I have to say is California Burrito!

  • Greg K.

first and likely last negative review based on service. When all is said and done, this place has cheap food that tastes good and it's open late. Normally things I cherish in a mexican restaurant. Had been going there for years. And so the story goes... one night after Lolla this year, I went there with my girlfriend and ordered some food. I was not drunk at all - just tired and hungry trying to feed the old ball n' chain to quiet her down and keep myself sane. Well, i made the tragic mistake of not grabbing my ticket after paying. I'm guessing he put it up there after I walked away. Some kid must have grabbed it behind me. Numbers get called...eventually realize some kid ran out with my food. I tell the guy...who i just paid...that some kid grabbed my food. "no ticket" was repeated by this guy 100x. like, i get it man. i dont have the ticket, but you know my face and i just paid you. There were not a ton of people in there. Just make me a couple burritos and i'll be on my way. I continued to plead my case - calm, cool, collected. He was a prick for no reason then yelled at said girlfriend when she tried to calmly intervene. haven't been there since. lesson learned here is to grab your ticket i suppose. but when you run a restaurant, you don't bitch out the very people that keep your business afloat. now you don't get paid and i don't get burritos. there is no winner here. only losers.

  • Amanda F.

Love the horchata. It's the best I've had! The burritos are huge and so flavorful! Love the fact it's 24 hours and so convenient!

    (5)
  • Rachel F.

BEST. TACOS. EVER! this is a late night place that most people go after the bars... I prefer to go for dinner. the tacos and horchata are the best in the city, although I've had better rice and beans. I am a frequent diner. love this place

    (5)
  • Kate B.

Came in here after skewl with some buds to get some greasy burritos. Wasn't expecting the excellent and friendly service. They remembered my friend from his late night drunken exploits to this 24 hour spot and greeted him with kindness. Got a veggie burrito that was satisfying. Friend got torta deal which was Torta, Fries, & a Coke. Quick and speedy. Hoorah for burritos.

    (4)
  • Greg L.

My go to place at bar close. Tacos, burritos, tortas they're all good!! You are always greeted with an hola amigo/amiga when you walk into the door. Food is cheap and good. They are open 24/7 too! I recommend getting a California burrito (burrito with guac and fries) or a pizza puff. I was pumped to see that they have my favorite food of my youth.

    (5)
  • Michael P.

This is easily my favorite "Taco & Burrito _________" place in the city. Two main reasons: 1) They perfectly toast the outside of the burritos; and B) I am a chorizo whore, and they press the grease out of the chorizo before putting it in your grub item so you get the meaty goodness without the mess running down your arm (plus it also helps to minimize the damage the next morning). For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would go to that generic, wannabe La Bumblefrick joint across the street. The food is so comparatively bland and disappointing. Suggestion: get a thing of guac, and just ask for a portion of chorizo, then take that chorizo and put it on the guac, then scoop that s&*t up with your chips and try not to make a spectacle of yourself.

    (4)
  • Johnny P.

Wanted to like this place because the service was cool and the location and hours are great. The problem is the steak can be terribly gristly. Once, I had (no exaggeration) a quarter sized piece of cartilage in my burrito. The pork marinade is also sour, and although the taco salad shell is fresh fried, I'd stick with vegetarian options here, which is not why most people are getting late-night Mexican.

    (2)
  • Isabella W.

Loved this place! Delicious taco burritos at affordable price. You can even ask to do the Mexican way to put only cilantro and onions. Staffs always welcoming u in Spanish, excellent quick taco joint!

    authentic late night Mexican food

Hands down the best burritos in Chicago! The staff is alway so pleasant and accommodating of any requests I have (I can be picky, I admit it). For dinner or late night munchies, TBE is the place to try!

  • Diane G.

Holy moly, hello new DRUNCHIES spot. My FAVORITE late night eatery by far. Very very cheap, and a WIDE variety of options. Tacos..burritos...nachos..quesadillas..SOPAS, y TORTAS!!! You name it they likely have it. And all for under $5. ALWAYS OPEN. Come drunk, leave happy.

  • Derrick S.

Big Fan! Sometimes you get the best food, out of these little joints. Great guac, nice portions, reasonably priced, lots of choices and the food is REALLY GOOD! I feel like I am in a new york hole in wall when I am here. A gem!

    (4)
  • Katherine R.

Amazing guacamole! We get it all the time when we have friends over. Tacos can be a bit hit or miss but I love this place. Great food, perfect to pick up and bringing to the park.

    (4)
  • Jason S.

Used to be able to eat here for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Where have all the original crew gone? I still go back for a drunken late night snack and have yet to find a late night burritto any better, but I miss the original crew. The outside of the burritto is crispy and the red sauce completes the treat. The juevos ranchero is a sin. This place beats out the competition....Bambas has no chance.

The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.
