Horchata is pretty good and the carne asada tacos are awesome! I have yet to try the margaritas but I plan to soon!

Just had dinner here and the service was very slow. They are apparently cash only, but don't advertise that anywhere but the register. We got a steak tortas that barely had any meat on it, and the chicken fajitas had a strange taste to them. We also ordered guacamole as an appetizer, but it didn't come out until our food did. (Without any chips so apparently I'm supposed to just spoon the guacamole into my mouth)The guacamole barely had any avocado on it. It was mostly a dry pico de gallo with a tiny bit of avocado. When I tried to ask for an itemized bill, the lady at the register gave attitude. For how much they're charging, they can keep their attitude and gross food.

Deeelicious and friendly. I stopped in while I was waiting for my car in the shop for a taco, and was recommended the chicken and cactus. I'm very happy that I went with the recommendation, it was delicious and huge! Could not be happier with my meal, definitely worth a try!

Amazing service! Forgot the waiter's name but he's really nice. I like their tacos and they give you free soup!

I came In To Eat With My Girl a few minutes ago!!!! There was an older Mexican lady that served us!!! Something we noticed that I didn't like was the customer's service!!!! First she takes our order and my friend ordered a lime margarita!!! She brings it over and right before my friend was going to drink it she asked for the ID!!! REALLY AFTER SHE MADE IT AND BRINGS IT SHE WANTS ID???? Second of all the margarita was not even done right it was so nasty!!!! We told her it was horrible and she Still charged for it!!! Third of all the table we sat on had to be cleaned cuz it was dirty!!!! Yells at another younger girl to clean it!!!! Every time we wanted something else we had to get her attention cuz she was to busy with the gossip with the kitchen guy!!! Fourth of all we asked her for the check and she took forever to bring it to us when the whole place was empty so we walked up to the cash register to pay finally I always order food to go today was the first time that I actually dined in and I will never go back there why should I spend my hard earned money to a place with terrible customer service they obviously don't care about their business is the owner not aware of this or does he simply not care

BUGS! I go to check out, He says was everything ok and I whisper to him no, there's a bug on the chandelier over our table, he says that's impossible because we fumigate every week.

Great place for late night taco cravings! I ordered the steak, pork and chicken tacos as well as their chips and guac. Everything was literally so good. I went to La Choza last time when I wanted late night Mexican food but wasn't that satisfied with their food. El Rey Del Tacos wins hands down!! Even though their tacos go for $2.05 each, which is super expensive for tacos in my book, they were definitely worth it! If I had to rank the tacos, it would be pork, steak then chicken. I loved that they included the grilled onions and peppers, they were a great addition to my taco experience! The guac with the chips was super flavorful and had a sprinkle of shredded cheese on top which was a nice touch! I would definitely revisit this place!

Best tacos in Rogers Park! Clean, family owned and a quality product. I will definitely be back for more.

I'm not a fan of the cheap, watered-down salsa. However, the tacos are great. I enjoy their horchata and they're usually open 24 hours, just not during winter. They have an interesting desert selection which I've yet to try. Their winter hours are 9am to midnight. The service is always friendly and welcoming. Even though the food isn't the best, I enjoy coming here.

Closes at midnight apparently? Poor service multiple times, but good food. Wouldn't bother if it wasn't so close

Tacos are delicious! 4 stars only because it is cash only. They do have signs so you know going in, but it is still an inconvenience. Definitely worth the trip though!

Really good. Lots of tasty mexican food. More than I could eat for about 12$. The tacos especially good. About 2$ each...nice little cup of soup. I do agree with another reviewer though about their salsa ... It Could use some serious revision.

Best Mexican food I have ever had. My compliments to the excellent Chef and pleasant Server/ Host lady. The soup, grilled vegetables, chips and 3 perfect sauces were all complimentary and will make this my favorite Mexican restaurant.

Possibly the best tacos I've ever had. Normally I wouldn't have stopped, but I was hungry and it was the nearest place to get a taco. There was nothing about the place that stood out, and my expectations were low. I hoped it would at least be passable. Even though I ordered takeout, they gave me a cup of soup and chips and salsa. Unnecessary, but very kind. I had the soup and chips while I waited. The carne asada taco was the tenderest, most flavorful carne asada I have ever tasted, and the chille relleno taco was out of this world. I was amazed. Even at my favorite Mexican restaurants the fare isn't half so good as it was at El Rey Del Taco. I can't wait to go back. I'd rate the food 5 stars, the atmosphere 2.5 or 3 stars. Since I don't care about the atmosphere, I'm giving my rating for the food and the hospitality, which were wonderful.

Third time was NOT the charm! My first 2 orders were online... both of which were totally messed up! HOW friggin hard is it to make tacos with just meat, cheese, and sour cream? 3rd time I figured I would stop in and wait for my order, thinking since I was actually there in the flesh that they would get it right.... WRONG! 3 tacos, covered in a mountain of cilantro. Drove back to get a replacement, and of course, yes it was written correctly on the ticket. Guess I need to brush up on my Spanish so maybe they will get it right... but I got a feeling this will be my last order. YEESH!

Was looking for Mexican breakfast. Pros: patio with a roof, bf liked huevos con chorizo which was beautifully plated, large portions, giant copas (micheladas perhaps?) looked fun, got to shock the other tables when I broke out in Spanish which is unusually good for a gringa. Cons: chilaquilles were disgusting: chicken and eggs were so so greasy. Plate was one brownish mess. Coffee took 25 mins to arrive- way after the food. Ridiculously huge portions. Half of us got useless plastic forks. And the place wasn't even busy! Y el colmo: $27 total which did NOT align with the menu prices. I wanted to love you but NOPE.

Nothing special about their tacos, which was RAVED about on Thrillist. Pretty standard, but nothing remarkable. When asked, "Do you want everything on the taco", I understood that as "do you want everything that comes free with it", not "do you want the extras (sour cream and avocado). So my surprise when I ordered 8 tacos (2x each of lengua, al pastor, adobada, chorizo), it was 2.75 each. I asked why it was so much after my card got immediately swiped (my fault) a little too late. I paid ~25 dollars for 8 tacos, which is absurd. Haven't tried anything else on their menu, but I'm not sure if I would return.

After work, it was a beautiful day outside, so we were looking for a place that had 1) outdoor seating 2) full bar 3) inexpensive food 4) tacos. This place hit all four on the head. Got a pitcher of sangria and a torta, both of which were great quality and LARGE portions for the price. Definitely recommend going this place whether it's right after work, or at 3 am (it's open 24 hours!).

This place has a lot going for it. In a land of grungy taco joints, El Rey stands out. * It has a parking lot!!! * Free delivery,,,wait for it...24 freakin' hours a day....whaaaat? * Free soup for dine-in customers *taco stand prices * Clean environment * Some kind of lovely apple concoction in the al pastor tacos * two kinds of out of the box salsas * Chips and Salsa while I waited The only con was the Packers mug on counter. I told the guy her seriously needed to get rid of that thing. I orignally ordered just three tacos. The guy asked if I wanted to make it a dinner with rice and beans. Sure but then make it two tacos. As I was waiting I noticed on the menu board that the dinner was three tacos. He adjusted the price to my two tacos without even mentioning it. That's great service. Oh, and the food was really good. I'm for sure going back.

Mexican Food that 'Hits the Spot". On the night we just arrived back into Chicago -- late due to delayed flight; was happy to find this place open in our neighborhood. We definitely thought food was good, prices fair, and service attentive. Recommended.

I rate out of 5, the asada (burrito), alpastor (tacos) the chips, the salsas, the horchata, and the service Asada (steak) 4/5 tender and juicy Alpastor (pork) 2.5/5 a little dry Chips and salsa 2/5 chips look old and salsa is not one bit good Horchata 5/5 nice and sweet, good amount served Salsas 0/5 worst salsas I've ever had, was not spicy at all, my food would've been better if the salsas were better..sorry Service 4/5 it took a while to get our food, the restaurant was half empty..the waitress was very nice, the food was served in good amounts. Not to mention the grilled onions and jalapeños. 17.5/30 I would go back, I just wont get alpastor anymore and I would take my own salsa

To sum it up, this restaurant is a rip-off with lousy customer service. I carried out a three taco dinner with chips and salsa. It cost me more than $17 just for that. I asked the waitress how it added up to so much, The cashier told me it was an extra 25 cents for cheese added per taco. I didn't know that. I've never seen that done. She could have warned me of this when I was ordering. She also said you wanted everything: lettuce, tomato, cheese, sour cream, onion and cilantro. I said to her I never said I wanted sour cream. I didn't know they would include it, but I told her exactly what I wanted and they still added sour cream I didn't ask for.Did they offer to exchange it for a meal without it? No. Then they gouge me for the meal. I couldn't believe it cost that much for that. I asked to see an itemized bill. After all, could it really be 3 or 4 dollars for tax? I don't think so. The cashier refused to show me an itemized bill and said "I don't know, I just work here". I hope this place closes down. They don't deserve the business. There are many other Mexican restaurants in the neighborhood to compete with that are better. I normally have been going to El Famous Burrito for over twenty years that I have been living in this neighborhood. They are always reasonable with excellent customer service. They deserve devoted customers.I decided to give this place a chance. I'm sorry I did. I don't recommend them and I will never return. A couple of days later I was looking at my checking account online and saw that they had charged me $22.48 for that visit I had a couple days before, the one that was supposed to be $17.48. So, in addition to being overcharged in the first place, they had the nerve to add on an additional $5 without my knowledge or consent. So now I started a debit card dispute with my bank. My suggestion is to never go to this restaurant. They are scam artists. But, if you really want to go there, pay in cash only so you could avoid being a victim of their debit card scams.

The margaritas were delicious and the chips and salsa were very tasty! I didn't have the food, though, so I can't really comment on that. I would definitely come back for cocktails, though!

I really love this place. I've been coming here for months for a quick late night bite. The salsas are incredible. Horchata is delicious. Cash Only, atm available of course. Nice patio!

I was starving and couldn't even finish my meal here. This is certainly a first! I ordered a chicken burrito. It was incredibly bland and soggy. I sensed that the ingredients, or the entire burrito was sitting out all morning. The cheese was barely identifiable. I thought the cheese may have been soaked in water for a few hours before being included as an ingredient. The tomatoes were more of a paste. I couldn't find the chicken! My partner ordered 3 chicken taquitos. The onions tasted as if they were sitting out for quite some time, the meat was ground, dry, and very slightly seasoned. His meal as a whole was bland, dry, and cooked without any pride whatsoever. I'd forgotten to mention the so-called rice water. It tasted more like a melted McDonald's vanilla shake. There was no flavor here... This place is a shame. I'd rate 0 stars if I could. I was genuinely concerned about my health after leaving this pace. Never again! Cash-only! The ATM fee for the one inside the restaurant is $3. Consider that your tip!

Moved very close so was looking forward to a better than average place in walking distance. It's 50/50 whether I will go back. The best reviews read like an employees friend wrote them. Yes there it parking, 4 spaces and there is another shop (just closed for now) using the same lot. Not much street parking so walk if you can. It is very clean so that's good or this would be one star. The waitress probably thought she was just being friendly and helpful but my goodness shut up long enough for a person to think. For a lunch she was do a hard sell on $16-$19 dinners, really pushing the margaritas even after being told my girlfriend cannot drink and it's too early for me. We had to ask 3 times for just a few minutes to read the menu! Had the cheese enchilada's in mole. Some people will like the reddish mole, its just not the style I like. The rice was passable as was the beans but nothing to write home about at almost $10. She had 3 steak tacos, small, very small, lots of rice and beans. It was ok, at I think around $8.50. Most of the menu are high priced dinners, a little section at the back for halfway reasonable tacos and such. You'd think a place that pushes $20 meals would at least have glasses for your can of coke. Oh and I needed a knife so I got metal utensils, my gf got a tiny plastic fork. I'm used to places like this having the TV compete with the music but both were so blaringly loud it almost drove us out, especially when the drunk patron in back (only 2 other people besides us) started singing terribly and the 5 people "working" there were amused. There were a couple things on the menu I might like to try for dinner but I'll go someplace with a little more class at those prices, have a feeling way too many margaritas are consumed in the evening to be a pleasant place to hang out over a nice dinner. I WANTED to like the place and started by making excuses for them but finally had to leave totally disappointed. Waste of time and money.

Everything was just "ok". With many other options in the area, I wouldn't rush to try this place again.

Unfortunately the salsas were absolutely disgusting. They only serve refried beans. Really? No black beans or charro beans. How sad. Carne asada & chicken tacos were amazingly tasteless. We couldn't even taste the cilantro on the tacos. It was bizarre. Waitstaff was nice... Kinda. They didn't like that I paid with a debit card so they up charged the bill $1. We were hoping that this place would get better, but if they up charge a bill for using a card... Not worth it.

My guy and I went in for breakfast this morning. Ordered coffee, huevos a la mexicana and chilaquiles verdes. HOLY SMOKES! SO GREAT! Here's what we got: chips 3 salsas a cup each of an amazing chicken soup with pasta a platter that was easily 18" wide with beans, rice, "salad", and my eggs tortillas grilled torta bread coffee with a hint of cinnamon (I love this trick so much( Incredible value. Great service. Food was phenomenal. Can't wait to go back when the patio is open for some BYOB magic. Maybe a great place to watch some world cup this summer...

The food is decent and the margaritas are good but the service is horrible during the day, the music too loud in the outdoor patio and without fail, the price you get charged is always higher than what is on the menu. ASK FOR A RECEIPT AND CHECK IT AGAINST THE MENU PRICE! This little scam has been going on for the past few years and is one of the reasons I and my friends hate to come here because of the argument at the cash register every time. They always say that the menus need to be updated, the cash register is broken or that they've complained to the owner but he doesn't fix the problem. I once ordered a dinner that was listed for $7.95 and they rang up the bill for $14.95. When I complained, the waitress said, "Well, how about $11.95 then". I refused to pay unless it was rung up as 7.95 and then they tried to charge me an extra $3 when I wanted to use my credit card. Needless to say, she didn't get a tip. If I hadn't been so hungry, I would have left the "to go" order there. I didn't go back for a year but decided to try them again last week and they are still trying to rip people off. Just beware. This is a horrible way to get customer loyalty. BTW, they close at midnight now and a little later on the weekends.

Great 24-hour place tha now takes credit cards. Love the free soup, the guacamole, the tacos, quesadillas and the arroz con Leche. I think the drinks must be good --saw Alderman Moore and some friends knocking back the margaritas a couple of Sundays ago. The rice and beans accompaniment to the dinner plates ¡excelente !

Excellent service. The guy who took our order was very friendly and accommodating. I really like the soup that they give you for free if you dine in. It wasn't just a nasty freebie it was good! I found out that they deliver - joy! I'm very pleased with my first impression of this restaurant.

i liked this place. went to go to Panchitos for breakfast, but it is gone and this place is there in its stead. food was tasty and portions generous and prices very fair. had steak and eggs - came with wonderful grilled jalepeno and grilled spring onion - as well as rice and beans and wonderfully fluffy corn tortillas - oh and a free cup of chicken soup with macaroni. chips are served with 3 types of salsa, presented very nicely in ramekins all in a single holder. I liked the chips - thin and crispy - but didn't love any of the salsas - visually they were very pretty, but didn't have a lot of flavor, other than lime or vinegar. one of them almost seemed creamy - like it had mayonnaise in it. iI'm not saying it has mayonnaise in it, but it did seem like it had a mayonnaise or similar base. anyway - over all- I'd probably go back. they are open 24 hours, so that's very convenient -and they have a parking lot -which is really nice. table service was a bit slow - but friendly enough. and the place seems clean. also BYOB. unfortunately it is cash only - which i don't usually do cash only places - but since it is so cheap - i'm willing to give it a pass. I would never accept cash only for any place that serves alcohol or is more expensive, because i simply don't want to carry that amount of cash around with me.

Go here! The guy at the counter was super-nice and friendly. Offered to make the food any way I wanted and chips/salsa/chicken soup while I waited for a carryout order. It's also 24 hours, has parking and they deliver. The chile relleno burrito was big and made well with beans, tomato and cilantro (I asked for no lettuce and sour cream). I've tried some of the other places in the Rogers Park/Clark St. area and the food is either gross or they refuse to make things even if they have the ingredients. Go to El Rey Del Taco.

  • Philip R.

Yes, they truly are 5 star good. Price, food, service, all great. I had what was one of the few pricier items on the menu (a relative term for sure) at 13.99,: the skirt steak with enchiladas. The steak was marinated to perfection. Add to that the warm tortillas in a covered wooden bowl and the free, unexpected offer of a cup of chicken macaroni soup for an appetizer and it was a lot for the money. They just added a bar, but it was too early for my tastes to try it, but I will next time. This new place really stands out in an area that has more, good Mexican choices than most in Chicago. That tells you how good they are.

love these guys. Super professional waiters make you feel like you are at a fine dining place. oh, and the food makes you feel like you are fine dining. the soup is super delicious, exotic and home made. the plates are large and beautiful with whole grilled onions and peppers garnish. make sure to try a glass of fresh squeezed to order juice. Soon they will have a margarita bar and mariachi music. BEST of ALL... 24 hours and free parking. Nothing else is open for a fresh. healthy Mexican breakfast in the neighborhood, but here I come Del Rey! for my early morning ambrosia!

So pleasantly surprised by our experience with El Rey del Taco today! We've been meaning to try them out since they opened and today I ordered tacos for pick-up. We tried the Carne Asada, Chorizo and Al Pastor. All were delicious!! And these are good-sized, generous tacos that come with roasted onions and jalapenos on the side! My standard for a good taco joint is one that makes and authentic Al Pastor taco and this place sure does! The seasonings were just right and they add the pineapple!!! Deelish. I was only inside for a few minutes but they have a nice selection of bottled beers and the place was very clean and bright. Hope they stick around!

id give it no stars if I could. food was tasteless and not fresh! brown mushy avocadoes is just nasty. I don't call an unseasoned slab of skirt steak on a tortilla a good taco! I wont be returning nor would I recommend it to anyone. Yuck!!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
