I really like this place. Favorite lunch spot when I have a "bro food" craving. I usually get a tenderloin or sirloin sandwich, glorious with a giant slab of real meat and a generous portion of mashed potatoes. Their prices are definitely not low (usually $10 - $15 for a sandwich), but I think it's worth it since they give you a real chunk of good quality meat instead of the usual ground meat patty / a few thin slices of whatever at other places. I am especially a big fan of their Lincoln wall (see pictures others have uploaded). My favorite one is a picture of Lincoln photoshopped with a lot of swag and captioned "A-Bro-Ham Lincoln."

First visit after passing for years. Lady before me recommended the steak breakfast sandwich if I felt like splurging, so I did (shouldn't have, but wanted meat, and was meeting a couple people there.) Pros: 1. Cooked med-rare to order, just right, and did so with a friendly smile. 2. Bun very fresh; delish when all soaked with juicy-juice. Yum. Cons: 1. After several delicious bites, the experience turned ugly when I ran into gristle, and not just a little; about 1/5 of the piece of steak was that. 2. Not that big of a piece of steak to begin with. 3. American cheese is an insult to steak; cheddar! 4. For $7, definitely not worth it. At all. No. 5. Didn't matter this time, but there are only like 4 stools so have to eat elsewhere. I hear the pork chop is good. Maybe I'll try sometime, although it's taken me 15 years to go this once...may take another few to try again.

This place is great. Whenever I work in the financial district at 440 S. La Salle we phone ahead for pick-up an order for a breakfast sandwich we call the Urban Special. A boneless pork tenderloin topped with a fried egg, 3 slices of crispy bacon, and stuffed with blue cheese between two perfectly toasted buns. The prices aren't low, but you get what you pay for. I usually can't finish this sandwich in one sitting, so I take the rest home and heat it up in the microwave for a snack when get home.

I've been meaning to go here ever since I saw this place featured on Chicago's Best. Finally, I had a work project that had me close, so I went for it. I got the regular chop meal with a side of the smashed potatoes. It was one of the best pork chops I've ever had and the smashed were just as good. I ate there and I noticed the lady who seemed to be the owner had a very good relationship with her employees. I'm pretty sure that happy employees make for good food, so that was nice to see. As I was leaving she said "Hey Spence! You ever had a breakfast sandwich from here?" I replied no and she then said "You will tomorrow!" and threw a free sandwich at me! Friendly people and great food is a winning combination. I'm not going to stop talking about this place. It helps that she gave me a good story to tell!

No bones about it, this place is chops! Love the quirky Abe Lincoln wall. I actually dined in. It's small - more of a takeout place - but the staff was accommodating and friendly. Got the BBQ chicken and smashed potatoes which was surprisingly presented quite nicely on a hot plate. Perfect hangover soother - don't judge! Those potatoes!! Oh baby, there must be drugs in them or something - soooo creamy and goood. The flavor is unique and absolutely delicious, wish I knew their secret. Definitely coming back for the skrinechop sandwich. It's times like these when I feel bad for vegetarians... more meat for me though! *chomp*

I use to love this place until I look on my debit card statement and they charged me twice for my one item that I bought and they gave me old chicken that was dry and wasn't edible. Last time I will be going here. Not worth it

This place is odd. Came at like 11:45 on a Thursday and the nice mom at the counter told us that they were out of a bunch of their sides. I also asked if they had coleslaw and they didn't (thats weird for a BBQ-ish joint right?). I also asked for a cup of water and they only have bottled. Do they have anything?? I felt so rejected. Anyway, as a last resort, I just ordered a pulled pork sandwich and it turned out surprisingly decent. The mom at the counter said they make everything and it seemed very home-y. The pork was tender and pretty flavorful and the thin layer of mashed potatoes was an interesting touch. I also tried a bite of the tenderloin sandwich and that was decent too but could have used a side of BBQ sauce. The BBQ chicken was just ok. Also had a taste of the blue cheese potato salad which was orangey and not very blue cheesey, also ok. Overall, I think Skrine Chops needs to stop acting like your mom's kitchen and step up their logistics for the Loop crowd/needy bitches like me. The food is pretty good but everything else could use an improvement.

First time here. Got the Pork Tenderloin Sandwich w/ Smashed Potatoes It was on point. Small little hole in the wall place, great vibe.

I went for lunch due to a recommendation of a coworker. I ordered the Skribeye and it was amazing. The sandwich was awesome, the service was quick, and the lady behind the counter was super nice. If you're in the area and looking for a greasy spoon type place to get a good quick bite, try this place.

Finally went back for the chicken salad people raved about. Not impressed. Also, this is not a "chopped" salad like some have described. There were some fresh greens, nothing brown. There was a very generous portion of grilled chicken which was somewhat charred from the grill. The flavor was OK. I would not say it was barbecued, but it does have a little rub on it. It was cut up into large pieces that were much too big to eat in one bite, however given the char on the outside and the plastic cutlery it was impossible to cut into manageable bites. So I had to eat it like a caveman. There were a few grape tomatoes, one or two cucumber slices, a few random green beans and a smidge of crumbled cheese. I honestly couldn't detect any dressing. There was some kind of liquid at the bottom of my container, but it seemed to be chicken juice. For this and a can of diet coke, it was $11.50. Wow (in a bad way). I was hoping for some extra crisp lettuce that could hold up to the chicken, some BBQ sauce on the chicken, maybe a nice vinegrette and a good cheese to cut through it all. This was really disappointing.

Went yesterday, no one in the place except for a meeting upstairs. Didn't have much of a bar, so assume it is a beer kind of place. Ordered the pulled pork which was delicious. Had sauce on the side so it was very tender. Ordered the blue cheese potato salad, good, but I like my ingredients chopped up a little more. Very large pieces of celery, very rough chop, again, good, but I would prefer to have it cut into smaller pieces. Colleagues ordered the pork chop (ok, nothing to write home about) and the other one the tenderloin sandwich, again, wasn't wowed by that or the macaroni and cheese. So most likely won't be going back for just the pulled pork, good but I have had better at surrounding areas. Would suggest for sides that they provide a homemade coleslaw, homemade onion rings, freshly cut fries. We were at the Forest Park location.

I went here for the first time today, so I went with the Pork Tenderloin sandwich. I was a little intimidated by the mashed potatoes in the sandwiches, just because I didn't want to be too full after my lunch break. That says a lot, coming from a guy that has a huge appetite. I found that the sandwich alone was a perfect size and super tasty. The mashed potatoes in the sandwich were amazing! I will definitely be back, but not too often. Spending $9 to $12 for a sandwich isn't ideal for a budget. But if you're looking for a really tasty joint and have some $$ to splurge... Stop looking. This is the spot. If they decided to drop the prices by a dollar or two, I'd go more often. Or maybe they need to really highlight their specials. The dining area is very small, so be sure that you have a good place to sit down and eat, because more than likely you won't be able to sit there and eat if it's busy. Just some thoughts for the business owners. See you next time!

The food is simple but good BBQ and it seems they put their smashed potatoes on all their sandwiches. i went there for breakfast one day and they were letting a customer smoke inside... it was a cold day but it is a small place...not very appetizing!

Another beautiful GOOF (Get Out of OF) lunch day. It's a little take out place that has bar stools along the side of the restaurant and windows if you really want to sit inside. I love the wall of all the Lincoln pictures. The menu here is pretty simple so what they make is specialized and done well. It was a tough call deciding between the skrine chop and the skribeye, and finally deciding that I could do with eating less carbs, went with the chop. It was a good sized portion, and seasoned really well. The blue cheese potato salad was pretty tasty, although I could use with smaller potato chunks to get more coverage of blue cheese. The plasticware could use an upgrade, the fork could rarely hold down the meat. The prices are what they are for downtown, though the skribeye sandwich was $12 seems kind of high.

I was really sick of all my usual lunch spots today, so decided to go on Yelp and look for some new adventures. I am glad I found this place! The place is smaller than I thought--no tables, only four stools along the glasses. They wrote the menu on some blackboard. I got the bbq chicken with mash and my husband got the chop with beans. My chicken was really tender and juicy, one of the better chicken breast meat I've had. My husband's chop was amazing! Very well seasoned and perfectly cooked. It was hard to cut in, so he ended up eating with his fingers. So just be careful if you do order the pork chop with bone, it could get messy. Our sides were damn good too. The beans got a little kick to it, not too spicy, but just about the right amount of spice to make you go "wow, this is good!". My mashed potato was good as well, and they actually gave you big portions for those sides. Two notes: 1. I was going to get the tip sandwich, but the guy there said they don't have rib tips on Mondays and Tuesdays. So if you want to try bbq tips, don't come here on Mon/Tue. 2. They don't have water cups, so you either have to buy bottled water, coke, diet coke, or no water at all.

Some of the best cuts in town. And those potatoes... Not a salad place. I love the low reviews because the lettuce wasn't chopped properly. The only chop that matters here is the pork.

This place is a fast food type place which I wasn't quite expecting. There's maybe like 4 chairs and a bar table overlooking the window type seating arrangement. The lady at the desk was quite aggressive, not the friendliest. As soon as I ordered, she handed me a bag with all 3 sandwiches in it. - meaning it was pre-made and not fresh. Anyway, I got the Skribeye. It was quite interesting! It had the ribeye covered in mashed potatoes. It was very good. I wish it would have come with a side of fries or something but I'm guessing the rationale is the mashed potatoes are considered the side even though they are instead part of the main course. It was pretty good but we were a bit disappointed that it didn't come with any barbeque sauce, as this place is listed as a barbeque specialty.

Oh Skrine Chops, I miss you so! SC has definitely won my heart for the best lunch place in Chicago and will be on my list of must-visit eateries for my next jaunt there. The concept is simple: get a soft fluffy bun, put in the customer's choice of meat (pork chop, sirloin steak, chicken), top it with cheese and some deliciously buttery garlic mash, and then wrap in foil for an easy to-go package. And given that the place only has a few seats and a very little floor space, this really is a to-go place. The sandwich is definitely a double fister (you need two hands to eat it...you dirty kids) and easily earns its place as a food coma lunch. I'd save it for Fridays and definitely never when you have a boring 3pm meeting as you'll be off to dream land in a heartbeat. I opted for the sirloin steak with blue cheese (it was on special!) and I don't regret anything. Each bite of soft bread, creamy mash, and tender rare steak with a blue cheese bite was perfect. I wanted to hug it close and never let it go but I couldn't stop eating it. The only thing I could complain about is that the damn thing, as big as it was, was over too fast. To put it in context, I was ready to walk a mile in the freezing Chicago winter to get another one and only the fact we had dinner in two hours held me back. An SC sandwich does run the risk of having too much of the same texture, so keep that in mind when choosing your meat as you want something with a bit of resistance to balance out the smoothness of the mash. But overall, if you haven't yet then it's time to get your butt down there for lunch - even if you have to fly across the pond to do it.

Good quality ingredients? Check. Fair price? Check. Unique employees? Check. Full of flavor? .... It's missing that last key...pizzaz that makes me really want to go back again. Sure, they have a ribeye steak sammich. With mashed potatoes. INSIDE the sammich. But the promise of lunch nirvana is somehow less than the sum of its parts. I waited a little bit to allow my emotions settle about this place so I could give it a fair review. But even as I was eating it, I couldn't help but to be a bit underwhelmed. It's a lot of carb-goodness and a solid chunk of steak...but I couldn't help but feel like I didn't really taste anything. Everything was just soft - sure, soft bread, soft mashed taters, and tender steak are all great things on their own. Theoretically, you combine them into something amazing. But there was no texture contrast. There were no exciting flavors. There wasn't really that OMG SO GOOD moment. Would I go back? Yes. But am I rushing to go back? Not at all.

When my coworker first introduced me to Skrine I was hesitant of mashed potatoes on a sandwich... Boy was I wrong. I love that every time when I walk in they remember my order (tenderloin sandwich with blue cheese), are friendly, and every time I walk out with yummy and unique food. Everyone I have taken there agrees. Now if only they would open up a location in LP/Lakeview...

I haven't stopped drooling since I read Kyle H's review of Skrine Chops two days ago, and apparently I wasn't the only one because when Nishan P. and I decided to have lunch today, he was the one who suggested Skrine Chops. We both loved our food. I opted for a pork tenderloin sandwich, which was both filling and delicious. Nishan ordered basically the same thing, but not as a sandwich. This is hearty, stick-to-your-ribs comfort food (mashed potatoes on a sandwich!), so it's not something you can eat every day, especially if, like me, you have a lot of work to do (which is now getting pushed aside as I battle my food coma) in the afternoon. As we waited for our food, we spied folks ordering burgers, which also looked worth trying. Actually, there's probably nothing on the menu I would pass up. They also have chicken, and I'm especially looking forward to trying the Skribeye sandwich. Service was very attentive; when Nishan had a coughing fit, the woman at the counter asked him if he wanted a bottle of water and even though he had ordered a bottle of water with his meal, she was going to toss in another one for free (he declined). It's the little things, ya know? As has been mentioned, this place is super small, so it's best to carry out. In our case, we took our food back to my office building's seating area and it's a good thing we did; the plastic forks and knives they tossed in the bag weren't going to do the job cutting through the huge pork chop, so we stopped in my office where they have proper silverware. Tiny place, big flavor.

Another fine Loop Lunch Location, I've had both the pork chop with a side and the Skribeye sandwich. I thought the pork chop was tasty, but not something I'd have too often. The Skribeye sandwich, a rib eye steak topped with blu cheese mashed potatoes on the other hand, would be something I'd want to have a bit more often. It's a delicious combination of meat, potatoes and soft bread. My younger self would have had it more than once a week, my older self has to be a bit more selective, but it's definitely worth it. They're a fun place that has a wall of Abe Lincoln pictures that customers can help add to, provided the picture isn't already represented on the wall. If you're getting anything other than a burger, you can call ahead to get things started.

Yeah, I don't get it. We had the ribs, the pork tenderloin sandwich, the Abe Lincoln and various sides. Nothing was awful, but nothing was notable either. The BBQ sauce reminded me of your basic, high fructose syrup grocery store sauce. The seasoning on the meat was mild and uneven. Given the strong reviews, the place was surprisingly (and completely) dead on a sunny Tuesday at lunch.

My world just got rocked by their ribeye sandwich. I have very mixed emotions right now...happiness because of how good it is but also regret since I've worked across the street from this place for 5 years and am now finally trying it. Don't make the same mistake I did! It's definitely worth its $12 because you can tell it's quality from the first bite. Also, they gave us a free side just because we had a wait a few minutes for our sandwich...what great service! This just added another reason to love Fridays even more. =)

Psst- come here...I've got a secret to tell you. It contains the words..."juicy"..."sizzling"..."hot"...and "Skrine"! Yes, it seems SkrineChops (one word) is one hot mess of a secret! But their juicy hot sizzling specialty pork chop, and other BBQ specialties are worth shouting about. Sorry, pork chop's outta the bag! Stumbled upon SkrineChops while wandering around Financial Place. This place is small, and it's probably best to carry out. There's only about four dine-in stools to sit on. Our dine-in experience was very pleasant. We ordered: -Skrinechop - Fresh 8 oz. bone-in center cut pork chop seasoned with (10) spices and grilled to perfection. (Those were Skrine's words- but perfection this chop was! If I hadn't been sitting down, my knees would have buckled from the awesomeness. The chop and I had a moment....the sizzling juicy chop was excellent.) -Chopped Salad- baby greens, blue cheese, served with warm chicken to make it all wilty and nice, and a dressing made with the SkrineChop seasoning! Salad lovers rejoice! -Blue Cheese Potato Salad- I was wary of this, but I love a good potato salad (and my mom makes the best, btw). The blue cheese was not even visible, so it must have been blended into a chunky potato salad that had celery, red onion, and was some of the best potato salad outside of my mom's. The wonderful counter lady informed me that "Skrine" is a family name. Whereas I was hoping somehow they had borrowed it from Snoop Dog. I mean, with dishes like BBQ "Skribs", and the "SkrineChop", one might start breaking into Skrizzizzle talk about how Skramazing and Skrucculent everything is at SkrineChops! Oh, and call ahead for faster service! They do Take-Out and also Catering! SkrineChops is so good, I just might have to have that Lipitor talk with my doctor.

I had lunch from here today and was not impressed. I ordered the pork chop and side of bleu cheese potato salad. The pork chop was very tough and dry and the potato salad was nothing to write home about. For $10+, you would think it would be better. While waiting for my food, they ran out of all their side dishes except for mashed potatoes by 12:15. Doesn't seem like very good planning to me...

They have an Amazing Pork Tenderloin SaMich with Mash Potatoes on Top. The tenderloin is super tender and seasoned just right. The Mash Potatoes are awesome. With that being said, the price is ridiculously high at $10 with no sides or drink. If you want a drink it's gonna cost you $11.50. I will probably visit here once in a blue moon, but I can't justify eating here on a regular basis.

Dude, snap. I just went here because I saw it one day and thought...sure, why not? The people running it told me what I was eating, I didn't object, and they were correct: Tenderloin sandwich on great bread with yukon gold mashed potatoes on the sandwich. It was better than I had imagined. I'd do 4.5 stars if I could.

This place make a legit sandwich. Just don't have two or you'll surely imagine your desk is a pillow at about 2pm. If it's your first time in the joint, you don't have a choice about which you're getting. It's going to be the pork tenderloin. The lovely proprietor kindly tells you this, because it's her house staple. I love this. More restaurants should "force" you to eat what their known for. If you think this is pushy, sorrytheyreprobablynotsorry. I'm sure she wouldn't actually shove it down your throat and take money from your wallet, but you should really just let go a little go with it. Besides all that. The tenderloin sandwich is REAL good. It starts with well seasoned, juicy, pork tenderloin (I was going to use moist instead of juicy, but some people cringe at that word, so I avoided using it,... you're welcome). The meat is atop some delicious yukon gold mashed potatoes. That's it. Just perfectly done pork tenderloin and mashed potatoes on the freshest soft roll. No sauce. It doesn't need it. MIND BLOWN!! :) Now for 10 bones it's not exactly cheap, but I'll definitely be coming back from time to time. I'm eyeing the Skrineye next (I'm guessing ribeye is involved) and looking forward to it. Careful, there's only about 6 stools in the place to sit down. Best to plan on taking it somewhere else to eat.

Not bad at all, heard people talking about a BBQ place nearby and had to check it out for myself. I'm not a connoisseur, but enjoy the flavors of BBQ. It is located across the Chicago Board of Trade which is in the heart of the Financial district. Initially, I was not too sure where it was at but a strong smokey aroma caught my nose and guided me to the front door, OMG - a long line that wrapped around the other stores, without thinking I jumped to the end of the line and waiting patiently for my turn to order. As I got closer to the front door, I could see why there was a line, there was a very limited seating arrangement and practically useless to eat in there, your first steps in the door and you are in front of the register. I took a quick glance and ordered the skrine-ribeye sandwich for lunch, which was delivered with a 8 oz juicy rib-eye with a scoop of smashed potato and a hint of blue-cheese wrapped on a fresh kaiser bun. To my surprise, it was very good and wanting more when it was all finished, the catch was that it was pretty pricey for a sandwich during lunch. For $12, you would expect a 12oz drink would come with it but I guess not because of the location? Overall, I would come back for other BBQ delights such as the pork-chop, burgers and sausage sandwiches.

Another place in close proximity to my place of employment, and I believe home to the best dish: the Skribeye. That's Skribeye, it's a piece of steak on a bun with their famous bleu cheese mashed potatoes. On more than one occasion I've ordered the Skrine Chop, a vastly inferior pork chop sandwich, thinking that since it's the restaurants name sake, it must also be their best item. That was and is an incorrect assumption. They also make a chicken salad that is excellent and, unlike most other salads in the area, contains an actual variety of vegetables (and not just iceberg lettuce). The breakfast sandwiches are amazing, specifically the steak one, but it's ridiculously expensive (I think $7) for what you get, so I usually settle for the pork one at $4. Fun sidenote: I'm pretty sure a direct relative of Patton Oswalt owns this place, since I've heard both him and David Cross mention the place at local stand-up shows.

I feel like this is one of those hidden gems in the loop that you can easily walk by everyday and not know or wonder what's inside. I've only been by for breakfast, but the pork and egg sandwich is just greasy deliciousness that if eaten on a consistant basis would probably cause you to die of a heart attack at a very early age. It's simple, to the point, and amazing. There is also an Abe Lincoln theme going on as the wall is covered by a bunch of random Lincoln photos, along with an Abe Lincoln sandwich, commonly referred to by my coworkers as, the Lincoln Log...you'll understand when you see it.

What the _____ man, you've been holding out on me? This place is fantastic. I was a SkrineChop n00b until today, I shall return. Soon. When i walked in and the woman behind the counter noticed my bewilderment, she inquired about my experience and I admitted that I had none. She said you've got to have the tenderloin sandwich. It wasn't a suggestion. It was a command, in a nice and friendly way. It was good. Damn good. Real good. She was right. Yes, its a bit strange to have mashed potatoes on a sandwich but, whatever. Its all good.

I was craving BBQ and found this place. It's definitely legit. Following is what I had: 1/2 rack of baby back and mash potato. The sauce is the best part as it's sweet but not overwhelming. The meat is nice and juicy. Wished i got the full rack. Warning: If you have meetings in the afternoon, you may want to avoid this place as you'll definitely get a food coma. :)

Well, I wanted to like this place. Recently, on my first visit, I had a Skrine Chop with a side of red beans & rice. While I normally really, really enjoy pork chops, I didn't care for the seasoning of the meat. After having read other reviews which recommended the Pork Tenderloin Sandwich with Mashed Potatoes on top, this afternoon I went back and I tried that. The service was lightning fast - I was given my meal in about a minute. But the Sandwich was underwhelming for the price ($11.50 with a bottled water) and, unfortunately, again I just didn't care for the seasoning. Others may like it, however it's not my personal taste, so I can't see myself returning.

Gimme what you got for a PORK CHOP She threw it at me like I was a short-stop Workin' in a Fatty Girl Halter Top Then she back it up on me and let it drop Make it hop (boing) like a bunny (bunny) Girl can I touch you where it's sunny? - CHINGY . Skrines my love. You can always touch me where its sunny! Because I love you! And you can run and tell that homeboy! We lookin for you! anyways UMMM....Hey!!!!! How ya doin?? Remember Chingy? I LOVED the song Right Thurr, because it talked about Pork Chops! I l LOVE Pork Chops! :) Especially when their ultra delicious like Skrines! Skrines cooks the pork chop to perfection (indoor grilling em! ) and then puts a huge dollop of mash potatoes before stuffing it into a bun. The spice and seasoning is not overpowering and the mash blends perfectly! Yes. You read it right. Mash Potatoes in a sandwich!! That's like buying a tub of jelly that's got the peanut butter mixed in to it. The money you save! oh my!! I believe they slice the pork chop into a butterfly style so it cooks faster and more evenly. I'm not 100% sure of this though. I love it, but the only problem is the cost. After you factor in a sandwich, side, and drink, your probably looking at close to 13-14 bucks. Kind of expensive if you're looking for a deal. The location is a blink and you'll miss it kind of place, that's probably why there aren't more reviews on it. I love to go during the spring/summer because you can sit outside by the Board of Trade. There isn't any room inside the shop since its so small. I haven't had anything else but the chops here. I heard the other stuff is pretty good too though. One side note: The red beans and rice is probably not going to light your fire. I would not get it. But try it once. maybe you like it.

Yeah, this is great stuff... pure country cookin' here. Do it in moderation or it will be a very bad thing. The first time somebody said we were going for a pork chop, red beans & rice in Chicago I laughed a little. Chicago has great food but come on, southern cookin' in the best damn urban area?! One bite, (in voice of Long Horn Foghorn) Now, now I say this is some of the best carnage to come off a grill son, since pappy roasted that vermin off the front end of his Oldsmobile back in '86. Simple, just a pork chop wrapped in aluminum foil... WOW! There are so many American places that do not understand spice, they use it to overwhelm. Here the flavors dance across your tongue with just the right energy. The smashed potatoes are GOooooood too, mmmmm I'm hungry.

First time customer on Friday, 16-Dec-2011. We spoke with Stephanie who was working the front counter. She was very friendly and offered a lot of information about the history of this family run business. We each had the same item: Pork tenderloin sandwich. The food was delicious but a bit pricey ($10.00) for a takeaway sandwich. Despite the price - I will definitely go back.

This is my favorite place to fix my craving for real meat. seriously nothing but the best meat, be it chicken, pork or beef. the sandwiches are to die for they are so tasty you'll swear this place should be made global. I detest to that idea let the rest of the world enjoy tasteless Mickey D's do yourself a favor f you love chicken. order a grilled chicken with garlic mash potatoes. else if you prefer pork try their full blown pork chop bone included with garlic mash potatoes and for my favorite, be bold and order the Skribeye.

So the salads might not be the best value, but the food is so good. We had Skrine catered to the office the other day and the food is a 5, value a 3 (and to be fair, you are paying for high quality cuts of meat)...so average it out to a 4 star establishment. The ribs were phenomenal, the pork chop sandwiches are the perfect combo of seasoned meat (coming from someone who usually isn't a pork fan) and mashed potato (yes...on the sandwich). I don't know why I went to this place and got a salad in the first place, its all about the meat here....

I've been working in the Loop for 5 years and cannot believe I went this long without finding this place. It's a total hole in the wall a stone's throw from the CBOT. The place has 4-5 counter stools and that's about it. So... plan for carry out or visit outside the busy lunch hour. Their Skribeye is a bit on the pricey side ($12) but the sandwich is worth it. Half pound of ribeye, topped with garlic mashed potatoes and some blue cheese. Recommended for sure. They do have some daily specials so there are some $7-$9 options. So it's not "crazy" expensive like some reviewers have argued. The people there were genuinely friendly as well. Definitely recommended.

Wow! The sandwiches here are ridiculously good, especially the breakfast sandwiches. I highly recommend grabbing breakfast here.

  • Bryant S.

The Skribeye (ribeye steak sandwich topped w/ blue cheese mashed potatoes) is so delicious. But you have to try the Abraham Lincoln (Italian sausage, mashed potatoes, American cheese, and BBQ sauce). The service is very friendly and helpful. It's not a fancy place, but very solid food. Be warned..it's extremely addicting and probably not the best food for your waistline...but I'll be back.

The pork in the pork tenderloin sandwich was undeniably perfectly cooked and juicy. When I asked for a glass of water, they said they don't have glasses for water. Okay, no problem. When I asked for salt, they said they don't have salt. I think they were insulted that I asked or at least their attitudes gave me that impression. I don't care if you're a dive joint or a 5-star restaurant, if someone prefers a little salt, please give them some salt. The sandwich would have been perfect (for me) otherwise.

  • Coli S.

I've been working at the CBOT for the last couple of years & always heard legends about how good these sandwiches were that Skrine Chops served. They are just that! I was not and have never been disappointed in the for or quality of service. It is a carry out place or for people who don't have time to sit down and eat. I recommend the Skribeye Sandwich with the potatoes on it (I opt out on the blue cheese). The BBQ Chicken & rice are also AMAZINGLY good and simple. I eat here all the time. It is a little pricey for a sandwich but the quality of ingredients they use is unmatch!

I like the ribeye sandwich and have enjoyed it off and on for years, but last time I went it was soggy and a bit tough.

This place is dangerous and I love every bit of it. The mashed potatoes that come on the sandwiches are incredible and the burger dog (*ahem* BACON burger dog), when you can get it, will NOT let you down. If you go here during lunch on your workday, don't plan on getting anything done for a while. Best food coma in the South Loop.

    (4)
  • Mike P.

Bar none, this is the best bbq in the loop. I usually go here on Fridays to ease myself into the weekend with a solid food coma from the Skribeye sandwich.

Are you tired of the same old fast food, take out and 'not quite there' lunch food in the loop? Do you like BBQ? Skrine is the place to be. Quite simply amazing. This is not a chain. It is family run. Your order is made when you order it. I got the impression everything was homemade. The barbeque sauce was spot on zesty/smoky/delicious. Here are some items I tried while I was there: BBQ Chicken - Amazing. White meat chicken, juicy and not dried out, barbequed fresh and tender. They chop it up and slather on the sauce. That plus fresh yukon gold mashed potatoes = awesome. BBQ Ribs ('Skribs') - Amazing again. Tender enough that they are not chewy at all, in fact they are tender if not slightly crispy. This plus that same amazing sauce makes for a deadly combination. At the point I ate this, I had already had two and a half other courses, and I still ate all of these ribs. Pork chop - Not BBQ this time. Had some mix of herbs and spices on the meat. Somewhat of a thinner cut of pork chop. Super flavorful, not quite as juicy as I would have liked but still decent. I prefer pork chops to be a little thicker anyways; maybe that's my own bias. The flavor was great either way. Skribeye - One of the best items on the menu. Burger bun, fresh grilled crispy/juicy ribeye, yukon gold mashed potatoes with crumbled chunks of blue cheese. A flavor powerhouse, savory, homemade, food-coma-inducing sandwich. At first I was like "$12!" then I was like "totally worth it." I think they only have this on Fridays, so grab it if you have the chance. I also have to say that the mashed potatoes were amazing. Seriously some of the best mashed potatoes out there, and they soak up whatever you put on/near them. Slightly garlicky, creamy...just great. Tastes like mom made them for you. Lastly - service. Top notch. The woman at the cash register was part owner, so she went above and beyond to answer questions, make recommendations, tell us some history of the place etc. Very personable people and this goes a long way in keeping people coming back. Of course, the amazingly delicious BBQ doesn't hurt either. Maybe it is a little small (only 4-5 seats), maybe it is just a little bit more than you would typically spend on your typical take-out lunch, but otherwise I can't think of a reason why you wouldn't want to check this place out. All I can say is...go here. Soon. Support quality locally-owned institutions like this! We need more of them!!!

  • Gary B.

I would eat here about twice a month when I was working on that side of the loop. Pork chop is awesome to say the least as well as is the potato salad. Perfect flavor every time. I would drag co-workers there and they would make the frown face when we got there as they were expecting some grand ambiance. Clear cut here order your food, pay, pick it up and leave. As stated before there is limited seating. I will have to head over there now that I will have more time for lunch and the weather is getting better. I could be wrong but I thought several bars in Forest Park in the 90's would have Skrine chop night. They would come in and cook up the chops and they served these heart attack cheesy potatoes with the chops. Man I dream about those potatoes.

  • Dave S.

I've only been on Fridays and that's no mistake. Skribeye sandwich topped with blue cheese mashed potatoes. I really don't need to say anything else but feel like I should at least add my barbaric YAWP over the rooftops!! Too bad it's Thursday or I'd go over right now and get one of those meaty delights!! I am sure the other stuff is good to but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Skribeye and I are gonna have a long relationship. I hope my wife doesn't get jealous!

This place is pretty amazing. My wife and I stopped by this place on our honeymoon and it totally hit the spot for a day of walking around downtown Chicago. Awesome comfort food. Whoever thought to put mashed potatoes on a pork sandwich is a freakin' genius. The meat was cooked pretty much to perfection, and the mashed potatoes were top notch. We even got a free sample of the cheese hamburger on a hot dog bun thingy. It basically tasted like the gourmet version of the ones at 7-11. Absolutely killer. Wish I worked in downtown. I'd come here for lunch twice a week.

I've been working just down the street from Skrine Chops for a couple of years now, but I only went for the first time about three months ago. I have no idea why it took me so long to get there. The food is absolutely delicious. Service is hit or miss in terms of speed; if you go at the wrong time, you might be waiting a while until they get "caught up" to whatever type of entree you ordered. The only thing I have ordered (been there twice) is the BBQ chicken over mashed potatoes. It is very VERY tasty. The first time we went, several of us ordered separately, but they convinced us to let them bag up our order together. When we got back to the office, we discovered an entire meal was missing (although we'd paid for it). Unfortunately, we didn't have time to go back, so we just chalked it up to an honest mistake. But I will not let them consolidate my food with anyone else's from now on!

  • Bill M.

This little place serves some pretty good pork chops for the trader crowd. You can get a single flavorful chop with one side, and while my red beans and rice were ok, the handmade mashed potatoes seemed to get better reviews from my friends. It is not that easy to carve into the chop with the plastic cutlery, so you may just have to pick it up and gnaw at it. There are just a handful of stools and a small counter space here, so it's best to take your chop to go.

    (4)
  • Ben K.

It's pretty simple here: get the bbq chicken with a side of mashed potatoes, bring it back to your office, and sit yourself down for a delicious meal followed by a food coma. There aren't a lot of different elements to this meal. For a slightly above average price, you get a significantly above average portion of delicious grilled chicken slathered in tasty barbecue sauce. The mashed potatoes are delicious as well, surely made with lots of cream and salt and butter and that sort of good stuff. The only thing that keeps this combo from being 5 stars to me is the fact that there is a fair amount of burnt corner material on the chicken and so you end up using your woefully inadequate plastic fork and knife to attempt to delicately cut off the burnt portion from the otherwise tender and succulent chicken meat. To avoid closing on that note, perhaps I should also mention the "skribeye" sandwich which has a fantastic name and description but which I have never personally enjoyed so I cannot verify its deliciousness.

  • Danny H.

Overrated, overpriced. The food is just alright, but paying something like $9 for a sandwich just doesn't sit well with me. The tenderloin sandwich was well-seasoned but a little tough. Good friendly service. Don't plan on eating in as space is extremely limited.

  • Jeffrey H.

American Food Carry Out. Grilled Steaks, Chicken, Burgers, Chops, etc. - And Ribs!! Everything is available on a bun with Mashed Potatoes on top - need I say more? It is slightly expensive for a lunch - however it is prime food & in the loop so its easily forgiven! CARRY OUT ONLY!

  • Aloysius T.

I had a craving for BBQ while I the Loop, so I decided to check out Skrine Chops. I ordered a pork chop sandwich with a side of potatoe salad. The sandwich was good. The bread was soft and not too thick. The porkchop was cooked to the right done-ness and it was served over a slathering of mashed potatoes. I wish the porkchop had a bit more flavor and gusto to it; it was seasoned very...timidly. The potatoe salad was wonderful and the addition of blue cheese was a stroke of genius. Due to the prohibitive price. I probably won't go again. Pros: Potatoe salad, pork chop sandwich Cons: Price...I paid $13 for a sandwich and a side.

  • Nick S.

OMGWTFBBQ. Pork tenderloin slathered in Yukon Gold smashed potato goodness served straight on the bun, that's what I'm talkin' about baby! This is not as good as Kansas City BBQ (nothing is though) but I am very impressed. The price could be a little lower, or compensate by throwing down a couple pieces of Wonderbread onto the plate KC style or even a very small portion of the chopped salad would suffice. Pro tip: Tuesdays they serve burgers which are pretty good, and this is coming from someone who normally eats burgers every couple blue moons and straight off his own super sweet awesome grill at home.

  • Lee D.

Still 3 stars. The price is still as high as the crowd at a phish concert, hence the rating. I cannot justify paying $10 for just a sandwich, with no sides, no drink. The pork this time was much better but the bun wasn't as spectacular as I remember. It is a delicious sandwich, but it is too cost prohibitive. This is a $6.50 sandwich, max. Bottom Line? I'll still be back. But instead of a bi-weekly excursion, I'll only be going once every couple of months due to the price.

  • John K.

This place is insanely delicious! I need at lease three more stars to complete my review. My new client is a couple of blocks away. I don't care how cold it is or how far the walk is, I will always get there. At first I thought the $12 ribeye sandwich was a little over the top. However, they could charge $20 and I'd still buy it. The first time I pulled it out of the bag, I thought it was puny, but heavy. It's amazing, it has everything you want and nothing you don't need. A smallish fresh bun, two thinly sliced rib eyes with the fat removed, a pile of blue cheese mashed potatoes. You don't need fries or other fillers. Just a amazing and mouth watering. There's only a lunch rail around the windows. Strictly take away place.

  • James C.

I'm a bbq addict.. bbq chicken - was pretty good, I liked the sauce.. not worth $10 but if you take two dollars off the meal I would be there all the time! The mashed potatoes or should I say the cream and butter with some potatoes! So of course they were good! In the end its to pricey but good for a once a month type of deal!

  • Valoria R.

Skribeye is best. Steak and potatoes on a bun. Was hesitant at first because I'm not crazy about mashed potatoes especially on my sammich but this was surprisingly very good. The golden garlic mash mix is really good. Make sure you say how you want your meat cooked. I agree with others on the price but I think its worth the experience. I would skip sides. Also, this place is really tiny. They have a few counter seats along the wall and window but very tiny. Best to take out. Try it for lunch. Take a pork chop home. BTW, their pork chops are very thick, tender, and juicy! Their cook is really sweet and cute too!

  • Art C.

Small place, but amazing food. Their Skribeye sandwich is made with a generous helping of ribeye steak, mashed potatoes, and bleu cheese. The combination may sound weird, but give it a try! It may hurt the lunchtime budget a little bit (and perhaps your overall health), but in moderation it could be a good treat for you on those tough days at work. I'd also their they signature porkchops, which are seasoned beautifully and cooked to perfection.

I came in with $10 and an appetite. I left with $0 and what was basically a pork chop with mashed potatoes on a bun. $10? Really? Tasted ok. I'd come back if it was $6. Until that happens, no thanks.

    (2)
  • Tiem S.

I'm angry that I paid $10 for a mediocre (at best) pork tenderloin sandwich with decent mashed potatoes and NO BBQ SAUCE. The presentation was on level with a fast food chain's. One could get a quality burger for less in the loop, or even steak for just a bit more. Never again!

  • Brian L.

This is one of the few gems in the south end of the Loop. It's close to work, so it's convenient to pick up. Not much room inside to eat. I've had the pork chop sandwich, which is served on a bun over garlic mashed potatos. The chop itself is a generous portion and one of the leanest cuts I've had. Also had the barbecue chicken, which was cooked to perfection. They cook it thoroughly without drying out, and the chunks of chicken are plentiful. The barbecue sauce is very good as well. Recommended to anyone in the area that is tired of the same fast food joints.

Best sandwiches in the south loop. You know it's good when the traders have a house account there.

  • Bob B.

Pork tenderloin sandwich served on an awesome bun with mashed potatoes on the sandwich! Weird I know, but damn was it good. Unf, we went there on the hottest day of the year and they barely have seating for 3 inside. Ended up taking food back to the office, but it was ok. Still hot and the service/cashier was super friendly. Would go again.

My job moved downtown a few years ago and I heard nothing but great things about this place. i instantly became a client! Their skrine burger and bbq chicken sandwich are addicting. Can you believe they put mashed potatoes on the sandwich? Genius! The chops and potato salad are worth a mention too. Great friendly people work there too... strongly recommended.

I'm sitting here staring at the remains of a pork chop and an empty styrofoam container that once held mashed potatoes. Plastic cutlery, offered up as some sort of joke lay to the side, bent and shamed. My mouth is awash in salt, pepper, oregano, rosemary and some sort of heat spice - paprika maybe? All in all I'm satisfied with what Skrine Chops served me, even at the hefty price involved. I'm already plotting my next visit as I'm interested in what they can do to a steaks and ribs, given their loving care of this pork chop. I'm hopeful and curious, stuffed and sated.

We had lunch for 20 or so delivered. Chops, chicken, beans and rice, mashed potatoes, and salad. I enjoyed the barbecue chicken pieces more than the chops, and preferred the mashed potatoes to the beans. The salad was original, but not something I'd get again. Something about the green beans and large chunks of scallions threw me off. The barbecue chicken was moist, had a nice grill flavor, and an excellent sauce. Not too hot, not too sweet. I like that it was served in chunks as it made for easy cheating on seconds as opposed to being called out for being a chop-whore. Speaking of, the chops were alright, but I found them to be over-seasoned. I know some folks enjoy that aspect, but I like to taste the meat. Pork has excellent flavor when cooked properly, and these were done nicely. Unfortunately, the menagerie of spices completely overwhelmed any other taste. Red beans and rice were basic red beans and rice. Nothing special at all, not something I'd get again. The mashed potatoes, though, were fantastic. We all joked that there must be a pound of butter in the large container we had. Very buttery and smooth, the flavor was just right. I chose to give them three stars because while I'd not go back specifically for their namesake chops, I'd go back for some chicken and mashed potatoes any day.

Whenever I'm down by the board of trade, I make it a point to go to Skrine Chops. I always get the BBQ Chicken Sandwich with Mash and extra BBQ Sauce -- it is AMAZING. Limited Seating, probably seating for 4 or 5 -- sandwich and drink will be around $10 -- VERY VERY VERY VERY VERY GOOD BBQ CHICKEN SANDWICH! I just wish they would give you more napkins!

a great lunch spot but a little off the beat and path. stumbled on this place by mistake because the line for subway next door was too long! what a lucky break. this place sells everything meat, from ribs to chicken to an unbelievable pork chop called a skrine chop. i opted for the chop and i have to say it was the juciest tasting chop ive ever had. my buddy went for the barbecued chicken cut up over a bed of mashed potatoes. he said it was delicious. small spot so better to carry out but the place had a steady stream of traders coming and going the whole time we were there. this is a must try

The best salad in the Loop. The Chop Salad had grilled marinated chicaken chunks, fresh greens w no iceberg. Add cherry tomatoes and green beans and you will see why office went crazy over this as a side to pizza. Other great Loops salads are the BBQ salad at Bergoffs, Chopped Salad at Halsted street deli, chopped sald at American Hotdog and the chopped slad at Taco Fresco. There is no Portillo's chopped salad and this beats it.

This is my first time visiting this establishment so if I do decide to return to this establishment, I will adjust in accordance to my experience. Now whether or not I return to give this a second chance may depend on my cravings in the future. For now though, I probably won't return there for a while. The reason for this is the value of the food which for the most part is if the quality or quantity justifies the price in my eyes. Clearly, with the portion that I was served, it was clear that it will be leveraged and measured against quality as opposed to quantity to dollars. Though when it is served with such low quantity, it already comes into review with already a disadvantage against it. The chops were pretty nice and fairly tasty but nothing that would garner a fourth star from me. Unique blend of spice on a small portion for the price. However, I wasn't prepared and read up on this place as had I known, I would've taken into consideration their recommendations of the sides when ordering. The saving factor that will get me to return is to try their sides based on the reviews from others.

You can walk past this place a dozen times and never know what you're missing. Skrine's isn't a restaraunt per say... there's very little room to sit down. You basically place your order, wait, receive, then go. But as far as food goes, there is nowhere I'd rather eat. Their selection ranges from a pork tenderloine sandwhich, to a chop salad, to a bbq chicken platter, to "the skribeye" which is a ribeye steak sandwhich with mashed potatoes and blue cheese (yes, IN the sandwhich). Let me also say you can't BUY service this good. The lady who takes your order (Steph) is about the nicest person you'll ever meet. The first time I tried the place, I came in a week later and she remembered my name and my order. Seriously... my lawyer doesn't even do that. If you've ever enjoyed meat, then give this place a try for lunch sometime. You'll see why Chicago Magazine rated it the best pork chop in town. Tell 'em "Rob from Canada" sent ya. ; )

I like this place for lunch. I've been here twice now, and it hasn't disappointed either time. I get the chicken sandwich, and there's always more chicken than bread. Of course it also comes with mashed potatoes on the sandwich, so you get your starch fill. The chicken is delicious. The BBQ sauce is very good. The 4 stars is for price, although 9 bucks for that amount of chicken and potatoes isn't outrageous. Also, the sides (I had the red beans and rice) are satisfactory, not great. Over all, I recommend it.

Mmmmm! I don't know what they use for the rub on their pork chops here, but I'm pretty sure that it has crack in it! If you're starving at lunch time, this is the perfect place to grab some chops for lunch to go. Of course, I also must mention the four most beautiful words in the English language: Blue Cheese Potato Salad; need I say more? :o)

this is about a 3 3/4 star search review. the menu is pretty simple and nonconfusing: pork chop/chicken/steak sandwich/salad and 3 sides: blue cheese potato salad/ yukon mashed potatos/ red beans and rice (all of which are of above average quality) you can order a chop ala carte for 7 bucks and with a side for 8. its good food, nicely seasoned, but i think the portions are a just a little bit too small for the price. maybe throw in a roll or a piece of white bread? whatever i'm a pig leave me alone.

This is a great place for lunch. No room inside, but the chicken and pork is superb quality for fast food. It's grilled (on a real grill) in front of you. Not the cheapest place for lunch, but really high quality. I've never had the salads but they look good. The mashed potatoes are incredible and come on the sandwiches!

My firm sometimes caters from here. I'm guessing the food at the actual location would be better, it's usually that way because of freshness. Even with the usual degradation in quality from the catering process, it was awesome! especially the mashed potatoes. I LOVE their mashed potatoes.

This place serves out-of-control good food. They have everything from classic home cooking to comfort food to salads. All of the meat dishes are killer, but I literally jones for the chops and skribs. Man... I recently hit the Forest Park location and discovered that it's right on the fun Madison Street strip. The joint is really cool and the food is as amazing as the south loop location. If you want dinner with friends or family after the south loop location closes for the day, you can get to the Forest Park place in 15-20 minutes.
