So I personally LOVE Scarlet Bar. Is it perhaps too small and crowded? Yes. But I always have a blast dancing here because the DJ and music is amazing. It's never obscure EDM music you haven't heard of or ghetto rap/R&B, but really fun current and older songs that everybody enjoys. I know so few clubs that I can rely on to play great music where I can spend the entire night dancing away with no problem. The crowd is an energetic group of mostly gay and some straight people in their 20s and 30s. A very friendly and very drunk crowd. Plus there is usually no cover or a low cover of $5. Definitely not a classy joint, but the perfect place to get smashed with your friends and dance unabashedly. If you go in knowing that it can be a hot and crowded mess, but ultimately super fun with great music, you won't be disappointed.

If you wanna be in a cramped space with a 100+ sweaty people bumping into you and stepping on your feet while you dance to the current hot songs and old school (early 2000s) classics....Scarlet is the place to be. Coming here you know that the music will be on point and you are gonna dance your ass off. What more can you ask for from a club?!

Such a terrible venue! Always too hot, too packed, and too dark. Not to mention the completely unattractive guy with purple hair that thinks he should hop on the bar shirtless all the time! Talk about the literal definition of butterface, but even with his abs, his face can not make up for it! Terrible place! Just keep walking past, don't get drug into this place. Oh and not to mention there's about a 90% chance you'll get pickpocketed here, so you won't have fun and will have to end your night early cause you've been robbed!

Didn't know what to expect when I went here on a Sunday night before the President's day weekend. It's too small to be a dance club, but that's exactly what I saw. Very loud hip hop music was blasting. The dance area was very weird, some people stood around trying to talk over the ear splitting music, others were trying to dance. I'll stop in another time to see what the bar is like on a non holiday weekend.

Skip this place. It's a dry bar. Bartenders Bryce was lame. All our drinks were mostly sprite. Learn how to make a lemon drop!! Nice music tho.

Nice place besides the dripping pipe juices. Came here on a Saturday night. The music and environment were excellent and I had a really fun time dancing. Drinks were O.K. I'd suggest drinking heavily before entering. Cold water was dripping off the ceiling pipes over the dance floor. I didn't like it. The dripping became more frequent as the night progressed. Why.

This is my second time being extremely disappointed by this establishment. First time, I dropped my phone and they could careless to help me find it. The staff was extremely rude and didn't want to help me, they just wanted to dance. The second time, I went there for my bachelorette party. It is unbelievably crowded which should be expected for this kind of bar. OH and THEY TRIED TO CHARGE ME FOR WATER!!!! It was clear I had been drinking and when I said I needed water, they refused to give me tap water. I am still not sure if that's illegal. Many states out there have laws where it's illegal to refuse water at a bar. Either way, this place DOES NOT care about your wellbeing. I will not be going back and I will make sure I stress how horrible the service is to everyone I know in the service industry. Do not go there unless you want to pay for VOSS water at a crazy price.

This place used to be inclusive and unpretentious but in the past few years they have been charging cover and refusing to serve you non-bottled water. Did they hire a new manager giving the owner bad advice or something? I remember when they said they'd never charge a cover - what happened?

    (2)
  • James S.

Greg the bartender is completely heartless. I asked for a tap water, and was told that they only sell bottled water - at a very high price. I had paid a cover, and was ordering a bar drink to go with my tap water. For Greg, this wasn't enough, he was very insistent that in his bar, people pay for water. I will never come back.

straight guy in a gay bar, but I had fun. good music, good drinks and fun straight girls! staff and bouncers are actually really cool people. I like this place

  • Mindy N.

This place is great alittle small but great to dance at. But my complaint is that one of the bartenders was really rude. I went to the bar to ask for some water, and he said no you have to buy a bottle, then I asked for ice... he said I had to pay for that too! I thought this was ridiculous because in the past there I've been able to get tap water. So I found another bartender and he gladly gave me tap water and was very nice. Look I get it if you have a certain policy on water, but obviously you don't you were just being a power-tripping jerk trying to rip off thirsty drunk people. Dont fall for this people! This happened on 10-2-14

SO.MUCH.FUN. I'm not even going to pretend like I have been to all the bars in Boystown, or even that I regularly go to gay clubs/bars, but this one was definitely a lot of fun. I came here on Sunday afternoon right after drag queen brunch at Kit Kat right down the street. We actually met some fabulous divas at brunch and even though we were pretty wasted, they demanded that there was no way in hell that we were going back to our hotel because we MUST continue the party at Scarlet. Every Sunday, Scarlet has a "liquid brunch" in which the doors open at 1:00pm (and close at 2:00am) and you sip on $12 bottles of champagne and cheap drinks and shots. When we walked in (after I fell out on the sidewalk because 1) I was drunk and 2) my stilettos may or may not have given out- nevertheless, I didn't feel anything) it felt like a nightclub in the middle of the day; there was a doorman, a DJ and even VIP sections with bottle service and champagne bottles with sparklers. I knew that I walked into heaven. What I loved most is that every one was extremely friendly and since there were only so many girls there, a lot of guys were buying us a lot of drinks and shots. Everyone was also gettin' down on the dance floor like it was midnight...but it was only 3:00pm. I don't think I've danced so much in my life and my friend who always tries to "keep it classy" and acts reserves was dancing like she was auditioning for a Beyonce video. Even though some random girls pulled me into the bathroom with them as I was waiting for it, and proceeded to ramble to me as if we were bff's, this was seriously one of the best times of my life. I can't wait to go back.

Great drinks and great music!!! My favorite bar in boystown because it's all dance floor!!! Yes, there is standing room BUT you can go over to Roscoe's or Sidetrack if you want to just hang out and chat. Scarlet is a great place for those looking to dance their ass off for a night!!!

  • Greg B.

for great, unadulterated drunk flailing and decent drinks with cute dudes. $5 cover on saturday that comes with a fireball shot ain't bad at all hahaha. only thing is, and i'm nitpicking, would be that i wish they would mix up the genres a bit more

  • Fumi A.

I like this bar. Its my favorite bar in boystown. Im a striaght girl but I enjoy going here for the music. They usually play top 40, hip hop, techno. The only cons are that the club is soo narrow and tiny but its soo popular. It gets way too crowded. No where to sit. Too many people. Hard to dance becuase so.many people. Another con is that this was one.of.the few.clubs in.boystown that never had a cover but.last night thwy had a 5 dollar cover. And even though it was my birthday they didnt even let me in free. But a pro is that eveeryone got a small tube of free alcohol.

  • Julie W.

I have yet to have had a bad time here...Scarlet always knows how to party!! The people here are so friendly and welcoming, not to mention so fun! The bartenders are quick and make some strong, delicious drinks. The atmosphere is elctrifying and fun. The music is absolutely perfect. I'm a big EDM fan and yet I can't stand DJs that only play beats and never songs the whole crowd knows. At Scarlet every song is one probably everyone knows and can dance to. It's fabulous. My only gripe is how small the space is. Maybe that's what makes it so different and special, but I hate barely being able to move let alone grab a drink! Otherwise Scarlet is a dance lovers paradise, with the fabulous crowd to boot!

    (4)
  • Lily Z.

I came here on St. Patrick's Day with a couple of guy friends. It was packed when we walked through. Probably helped that there was free cover! The space is quite small compared to other clubs like Roscoe's or Hydrate. The bartender in the back was feeling the music and dancing along which was cute. He gave us a free drink for rooting him on. Haha. The music is more top 40s, which I don't really care about. I think that if I wanted something more low-key and intimate, I would pick this place.

    (4)
  • Derrick S.

Small but packed with fun! Dj's keep it pumping, pop up celebrity appearances, themed nights = the funnest (is that a word) bars in boystown. Sunday liquid brunch with $12 champagne - you can't beat bit!

    (5)
  • Rick M.

I would give Scarlet a 3.5 if I could mainly because it's so damn small. This place is always completely crowded and there's never any room to move around but I suppose that's Boystown for ya'. I'll be honest, I usually wind up here at the end of the night because there's never a cover even on Pride. I also have to add that their music selection is always wayyyyy better than Roscoe's. Oh yeah, I'm pretty sure their drink prices are good too, but I'm usually too drunk to remember...

    (4)
  • Bri A.

My least favorite bar in this area! It's always way over capacity and too crowded to have fun. If you want to be squashed like a sardine and have flailing drunks bump your drink all over or out of your hand while dancing to crappy dance mixes, this is the place for you!

    (2)
  • Kelsey W.

My roommate and I (both straight women) have never been treated so well in our entire lives. Scarlet was amazing from the moment we stepped in until the moment we left at closing. Literally every song that came on would prompt us to scream "That's my song!!!" The bartenders were so friendly and got us strong, delicious drinks immediately. The atmosphere was out of this world. It was crowded but that's exactly how I love my clubs, and we didn't have any problems with the crowd. Absolutely zero cons, Scarlet is 100% pros and we will definitely be coming back for more.

Just wanted to update to add more awesomeness to my review. I just love dancing at Scarlet. It is the best music and most fun crowd, gays and lesbians. Love it!!!

  • Alicia D.

If it were possible to give 0 stars, I would. Actually, negative stars... I would. I have never in my life been treated with such disrespect. I was in Friday, not my first time, with a group of about 10 people. Went outside to smoke, and when I tried to come back in the door men tried telling me there was no way I just came from inside. So we stand in line with our other friends, only to have the "owner" not let us in, because he didn't believe that I had been standing I line. So I walked to the owner, to try to explain the situation and HE TOLD ME HE WAS GOD and that I couldn't get in. I was disgusted with his attitude, and the way he handled the situation. I then had the security guard literally physically assault me. I weigh 95 lbs, and had perfect hand prints on my arms that turned into BRUISES. There is a difference between protecting your business, and taking advantage of a power position. I hope more than anything that they read this and DON'T treat future customers like dirt. That's how your business closes. I will never be going back, which sucks because it was my favorite bar. Ps- physical assault should be a last resort, not a first. Pss- Sorry I'm not sorry I had to resort to notifying the public of the disgusting way you treat your customers, but your voicemail box is full, and the cell phone that you have listed as your business number is always turned off.

I have a love hate relationship with this place. I love the music and the bartenders but hate when it gets so crowded, but I always have a good time here

  • Yesy D.

I really got a bad first impression of this bar and I won't be going back. I came here for a birthday party for a friend and upon entering I definitely was liking the music. It was current and older music nicely combined but that was the only good part of my experience. The crowd this place attracts was young and rude. I love boystown and I frequent the bars but I had never been in a place where people purposely push you around and have no regard for other people's well being. At some point I felt like I was in a mosh pit. When I went to use the bathroom, that destroyed all possibility of me ever going back. The bathroom was disgusting, but then again I wasn't surprised because of the patrons that this place obviously attracts. No soap! No hand soap! Eww!!!!! I will not come back again. The beauty of boystown is that there are many other better establishments that I would rather give my money to. The awesome music could not save this place. Thank you but no thank you.

This place is a gem. It's not like Roscoe's, Charlie's or the other dance clubs. You'll hear music crossing 20 years all mixed together. It's small and can be a tight squeeze at times but this is one of the bars that you can probably be in New York, LA etc and people will know about it. Whereas other clubs might be more like a Big Box store, Scarlet is more like a boutique where you go because it's something special. Having traveled to other cities I can attest that people visiting Chicago might yawn at most of the bars but they will remember Scarlet.

  • Maddie B.

I brought a bunch of people with me here and we got people dancing. Nobody was dancing when we got there. Some friends and I went outside to have a cigarette and some of the group was allowed back in while three of us weren't. The doorman told us they had people "monitoring" us and we specifically didn't buy any drinks. True, not all of us bought drinks but a couple of us including me did. Then he told me Id have to buy$100 dollars worth of booze if i wanted to get back in and that we were all "rolling". He spewed a variety of excuses and insulting accusations. We got their business going and then were thrown out. I wouldn't recommend this place for a good time.

We were meeting up with a group of friends after dinner and they suggested Scarlet as it would be less packed at that time of the evening so we'd have an easier time finding each other. Definitely was easy to find us as the bar was pretty empty at 9:30pm when we got there. Perfect though, we were able to get the drinks flowing and get a head start on our buzz. The bartender was attentive and mixed a pretty strong drink - kudos to him. You can also sit and watch the TV - they had Hedwig and the Angry Itch playing and it was more than a little fascinating. As it gets later in the evening they remove the bar stools to get ready for the packed house and the dancing. The DJ spins all the festive dance tunes you are hearing on the radio currently and mixing it with a more techno beat. Add vodka+red bull and you'll be feeling the beat in no time. The place will get packed...and it will be packed full of hot boys which makes it that much more festive! Special shout out to the door guy with the sexy hipster glasses and the fabulous faux hawk spiky hair...every time we stepped outside for a moment he was shooting the shit with us and adding to our fun time. And didn't card us every single time we went back in. Loved him. Definitely give this place a try when you are going barhopping on Halsted St. You'll be glad you did.

What a dive! Popularity = Line Attentive bartender and staff. The special $5 Long Island Iced Tea and Blue Hawaiian on a pitcher is a hoot. The music is choppy with mish mash rhythm that makes it difficult to do a continuous high energy dance, but touchy feely dirty dancing works right? ;-) The fabulously slender and trim Boys are the source of envy with their HOT bods.

Thanks for a great evening Scarlet, you helped make one birthday very special. Bottle service booth up front is so fun, a nice space for everyone in the group. Wednesday night DJ was on it and the lighting is top notch - I absolutely adore the one-of-a-kind disco ball. I would pick this bar over others in the area for having drinks and dancing with friends.

Had so much fun at this place! Went here for a friend birthday. I like how they gave us lighters and glow sticks! Fuck yeah! And 5 dollars pitchers!? I'll be here again!

Love this place. The nicest and hottest twinky bartenders/bottle servers. Great door guys. Strong drinks and not expensive. And a free bottle now and then. Perfect.

  • Chris T.

I've been here a few times now, and I'll probably end up here many more times in the future. While I'll admit it can be fun - but you better be really drunk to enjoy it. It is soooo crowded on the weekends that you can barely move. I like a poppin' club and all, but there's a point where it goes from being fun to feeling like you're as squeezed-in as canned tuna.

  • Iman W.

40 ounces in paper bags, Scarlet I simply can not with you! It was super crowded when I went there, don't know if it's always like that. But I will say, I somehow managed to escape without having someone's booze spilled all over me. Had this been Clark St, I would have had more alcohol on my shoes than in my system. Decent prices as well. $5 will get you a long island you won't soon forget. Well actually, you might forget. Depends on your tolerance. And dancing with guys that don't want to grab my butt or my chest. Always a plus in my book. I gave it 3 stars simply because I'm not a fan of packed spaces, the bartender was kinda ignoring me until my friend came up, and this is my first time here, so I need to reserve some judgement. I wouldn't be against going back.

  • Alan K.

I liked the ambiance of this place. People seemed quite friendly. The space was small enough where you can mingle with other people. The DJ was awesome. He was playing hit after hit. I came here on a Thursday night. They had $5 40oz beer specials. Seriously, can you really beat that? I think that is great. It looks like there are many other drink specials during the week as well.

  • Brittany F.

The bartenders and door guys are great. It's my favorite Boystown bar because unless you're there on an off day, then there will be a crowd and it will be dancing. That can be an issue (my friends make jokes about how our tombstone will read "He died as he lived: Crushed in a corner in Scarlet..." Okay, we're not very funny, but it does get really crowded), but if you wait about ten minutes when it's really bad it will empty out a little and you can carry on. Good music, good people, and cheap drinks, particularly on Thursday. What's not to love?

Gay bars are the best bars, especially for women like me. I'm personally engaged and hate always being bothered by total douches who want to tell me how pretty I am, I just want to dance and hang with my friends. So Scarlet it is for me. The place is super fun. Drinks are decent prices-I ordered a screwdriver for $5.25 and it was delicious! The music is pretty good, all very top-20esque with the typical trans beat, so very fun to get loose to. All the gorgeous gay men make you want to dance and just have fun-props to them, they make the place what it is, but of course. I had such a fun time there, and I can't wait to go again. FYI: The bathroom was super clean. It is a little small so expect crowding, and trouble getting in and out, but my advice is to get in, grab a drink, find a spot with your friends and dance the night away. :D

  • Aimee B.

Had so much fun here for my friend's birthday. Yes there are a good number of clearly straight women here as other reviewers have commented (there was a bachelorette party when we went) but for good reason - you can dance like you don't care without some skeezy guy randomly coming up behind you and... well, you know the drill. But there were plenty of guys, and guys did outnumber girls from what I could tell. In case you're wondering about dress code (I always fret about dress code with new places)... I was there on a Sat night and I'd say most people were somewhat dressed up, but not EVERYONE was dressed up. So lots of skirts and dresses for the ladies, though I didn't feel out of place in skinny jeans. I also saw a few people in what I would describe as more "everyday clothes" and they didn't really seem out of place. This bar didn't feel too judgy. Definitely not "pretty people only." Yet it still felt like a great party scene and a good place to meet people if you're a gay guy. Sat. night was loud and packed by 11:00-ish. I have no idea what it's like other nights, but on Saturday night don't expect to be able to sit anywhere. Very high-energy scene! Bartender in the back was super friendly and provided great service!

I feel like I should be wearing a scarlet letter upon my bosom as I enter this bar, because this place is raucous, daring, and yet so much fun! I've been here a few times and enjoy it every time I come! The most fun I had was surprisingly on a Sunday at 3 in the afternoon after a wonderful unlimited mimosa brunch close by. And boy, was the place pumping! Individual boxes of cereal placed throughout the bar added to the brunch ambiance (a couple which I admit I took home and a few I ate there). The lights were dimmed enough so that I felt like it was 10pm outside already. The DJ blasted beats that made you subconsciously move your hips as you talk to the person next to you. The crowd was a mixture of everyone (all types of beautiful boys and girls). Yeah, I'll come again! And, Yeah, I'll enjoy myself each time! No cover, nice crowd, places to sit up front, I'm in!

  • Tracey Z.

We went there on a Thursday night. $5 Long Island pitchers? YES PLEASE. It was a great crowd, everyone was super friendly. It was PACKED though, and unfortunately we went with a bunch of straight guys who weren't interested in dancing, so we moved on after a pitcher or two. An interesting fact: they have a flip cup table! This is the second bar I've seen in Chicago that offers flip cup. I didn't know that bars provided drinking games, it's kind of amusing. Reminds me of college! I will definitely come back here one Thursday, hopefully with a crowd more down to hang out and dance :D The only downside other than the crowdedness was that there was nowhere to put our coats or purses because the place was so tiny!

One of my favorite Lakeview bars with a pretty laid back feel to it. The bartenders over the years have been attentive and fun to talk to. I've seen it both busy and non, and it's fun either way.

Scarlet has risen from the ashes. Well designed space, adorable bartenders and the boozy specials that only Boystown can deliver. Went in here for a lightly attended Yelp Gay Night and had lots of fun. Okay, it was just John B. and me and Mesum and Dane and a few other cute guys who's name I can't remember (forgive me!) yapping the night away and downing the Long Island Iced Tea specials. It was really funny to see people suckin' on paper bag covered fawdies, another of the specials - that always amuses. I walked in at 8 PM and it was absolutely dead, but picked up quickly without ever becoming oppressively crowded. This was a Thursday, though, what I call the New Friday. My only bitch was that around 10 PM, someone came by and took away our chairs at the bar. Hey! Time to go! Policy is policy, but it really wasn't crowded enough to really need the extra space. All that said, sure, I'd come back. It's a cute place, love the dishy bartenders, and a very friendly vibe.

For my 100th review, I thought I'd review Scarlet. I have to confess, I really actually liked this place. I was talked into going this past Friday night by a very handsome boy, who is now "just a friend" - but I confess, I do like being seen in public with attractive people. We got there at 10 pm, and while not crowded...a nice crowd had formed. We were lucky enough to score seats in the back lounge. There was also some promotion for UV Vodka....so there were free drinks in addition to the reasonably priced ones I was having. I also scored a lemonade flavored chapstick from the vodka company. Free chapstick AND good drinks? Fab. The crowd was amazingly diverse, and dare I say attractive? I actually had intelligent conversations with more than 5 people. Not the twink fest I was expecting. I saw lots of neckties, and fitted trousers. The bar tenders were really friendly and flashed smiles with each order. I was sold, and will go back again and again. It had a very East Village thing going on, only add Chicago gays....it was a cool mix. The DJ was obviously having fun jamming out to what he was spinning. The bathrooms were exceptionally clean. Never at any point did I feel I needed my trusty bottle of Purrel. The decor was fun...it was dark, I couldn't see fine details..but I appreciated the layout of the space, and the really comfy seating. This bar was the first half of an extremely fun evening, that ended in me somehow wandering away from the group I was with, hailing a cab that tried to swindle me...dropping me off at a gas station 4 blocks from home, and me passing out on my bed...and waking up in a shirt, tie, super cute sweater vest...and nothing else. Thank G-d I was able to elude all the paparazzi. This wouldn't have looked good on the cover of Library Journal.

I really like the ambiance here. I like the lounge-y feel of the place. The drink my ex got me was delicious, but said ex basically told the bartender how to make it so I wasn't surprised. I think I liked the music here, but I'm not really sure because I was already 2 martinis in from another bar earlier. Bad idea, I know. I just didn't know what to say to the ex. It was an awkward meeting. The ladies' room is nice. I liked the decor. It gave it an upscale look. The only thing I didn't really like about this place is that I hate being approached by straight men in a gay bar. Really now? I'll go to a straight bar if I want to be approached by decent men. I still say that straight men who approach women in a gay bar are creepers. Enough said.

used to be great - now a fine example of how to suck. Doorman = jerk. PSA for him and all other (jerky) doormen. You have an ultra simple job. A moderately trained ape could perform the same function... Smile and act like youre not a frustrated twink losing his looks. Bartender = nice enough. A little slow and seemed distracted when my party was there. But he did seem like he was trying so Im not gonna fault him too much. Some people are just slow... Bathroom situation = are you kidding me? The pocket door thing just randomly plopped in the middle of the room is so weird. Music = Hard to say... Some of the mixes/songs were good and some were just so different that it was hard to get a feel of what kind of vibe they were going for. Sound system seems quality though; just needs better selections being played. Crowd = met a few nice guys here last visit. But, If im honest I just wanted to kidnap them all and take them down to Minibar with us. I think they know the owner or some employees and just patronize the place out of some misplaced loyalty... I dunno. Atmosphere = other than the aforementioned cluster#$ck situation by the bathrooms the place does look OK inside; although it was VERY dark in there... Verdict = Dont see any reason to ever go back. The drinks are cheap enough where if you dont feel like trekking down to bucks or little jims, this dive will do, I guess. Overall you could probably randomly throw a stone and hit a better gay bar on halsted.

To be honest I didn't known this place existed, until I noticed tons of people staring at its big windows. I was curious so, I took a very close look and saw the most fine-looking Go go-Girl dancing like she didn't care. That is why I decided to take a peek inside. For being after pride parade there wasn't a line to go in. The decor reminded me of a Sea food restaurant (but, in a good way) not too specious, but it definitely gets Packed! The Music here is popping, because they play tons of "Today's Hottest Hits." The trademark of this place I believe it has to be the dance area next to and on top of the couches next to the big windows, which is Packed! with a huge diverse and lively crowd. This is a "MUST GO PLACE" Place during Pride Parade.

It's Saturday early evening of Pride weekend. I walk in and see four guys at the bar, no one in the "couch area" by the window, and a bartender. My first thought was, "ok, it's early but come on people... it's Pride weekend!" A few more people came in while we drank our drink (we only stayed for one) but it never approached "busy". It felt more like any Tuesday night of the week (not to diss Tuesdays!). I was underwhelmed to say the least. The only good thing was I was given a pretty set of rainbow beads from one of the men at the bar who was feeling generous (among other things, lol). In hindsight, I probably should have skipped the "what do I need to do to earn those beads" question. He told me. ;-) We left and headed to Sidetrack where we discovered, that's where everyone was! If you're looking for a nice little quiet bar, Scarlet might be your place. I'll give it another shot next time I'm in the area. I don't want to be too hard on them after one visit.

I don't go out to bars very often... but I enjoyed Scarlet. The dj really tapped into and enhanced the mood.

The girls and I happened to pass by and decided to give it a try, not knowing that it was a gay bar...no wonder why there were so many good looking guys. In any case, the DJ played great music (House) and the bartender was nice. We danced a little bit but decided to leave because we wanted a different scene :-).

Strong drinks, great music, and being surrounded by mancandy. What more can a girl ask for?? I'd call Scarlet a more sophisticated chic bar. The crowd was slightly older than Roscoe's and everybody seemed to be having a great time. It wasn't too full when we came by (I think it was 11pm?), but it filled up quickly after that. I stuck to my good girl drinks, but will definitely come back to try their other cocktails. This is the type of place to throw back a few martinis. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, but sultry at the same time. The bathroom has this great hook lock that makes it seem dungeon-ey. But it was at the top of the door, which makes it impossible for a shortay like me to lock the door. I will definitely be back to play.

So , we ended up on Halsted for Greek Fest, had a great time, then @ about 1am, I found my self ,on the dance floor, having the time of my life, with some hottie, from Naperville, of all places.. great lights, cool dj,etc.. drinks also high end, including the fiji water....

Welcome to Scarlet, where once you hit 28 years of age, you officially feel old. Oh, Gentry... why did you ever leave? Scarlet isn't awful, but it's also not great. The bartenders are friendly enough, but the drinks are a wee much, and the place is small... t i n y. It's nearly impossible to move, but I suppose that's part of the ambiance.

I've been here a few times and while it isn't quite my favorite bar yet, it has a good ambiance and all around good energy to it. My first time going was during Market Days and it was packed. Tried the new UV vodka drinks - which were not bad. Bartenders were pretty cool. Second time around my friend and I went on a Friday night (the night LiLo was released from jail - haha!) and it was kinda empty - but the bartenders were having fun all dragged out like Lindsey. Anyway, I think I'd enjoy it more if there was just more room!

Some points to consider when considering going to the reopened Scarlet: - music is WAY too loud-- if I wanted crappy DJ gay techno, I'd go to Mini-Bar. - bartenders are STILL charging different prices for drinks depending on the customer (for me it was $8 vodka tonic, for my friend it was $9) - drinks are weak and over priced - the decor is really nice-- better than the old Scarlet, but clearly the ambiance does not match the decor. Make up your mind, Scarlet. - the clientele seem to be just as confused as the management. You have your typical twinks, your dressed up men, or your casual, scruffy lookin' dudes. All ages. Maybe this is a good thing. - I was there on a saturday night at 11pm and it was not crowded. Again, this place needs to hire a better DJ and lower the volume.

Awww Scarlet, why you do me like that? As you may know if you're in the know, last year Scarlet suffered a disastrous fire. The bar didn't sustain a lot of fire damage, but apparently it was soaked to the skin. Now there are plenty of spots on Halsted that could use a good scrubbing down, but Scarlet was still fairly young and healthy at the time. Scarlet closed. Last fall, Scarlet reopened, and in its honor I hosted a little event. All was going well. The bartenders were fun, if a little fetusy, and the drink specials were fabulous. $5 mini-pitchers of Long Islands, served with a glass or a straw, and 5 buck 40s, served in a paper bag. Decent music and plenty of seating. We bellied up to the bar. Until 10ish, when the bar stools began to disappear. First the empty ones, and then the ones we were using. While we were using them. The shaved head little barbacktress was very nice about it all. She recognized that we had been there for the past two hours when NO ONE else had been at the bar, and told us that of course, they weren't telling us we had to go. Still, it was our cue to go. Here's the thing. The bar was not that full, and there was no sign that it was going to get that much fuller. That said, there are three or four tables opposite the bar that were allowed to keep their chairs. At any time during the previous two hours, one of the staff could have said, "Just so you know, at 10 o'clock we clear the stools from the bar. So if you want to relocate to a table, you should do that now." We would gladly have moved -- and would have gladly have kept drinking and tipping for a couple more hours. Instead, they lost a half dozen patrons. Silly. Despite the policy, Scarlet is still a fun place to hang out. Though the bar lost some of its personality in the fire. A lot of the decor that made it seem like something between a speakeasy and a bordello is gone, replaced by the standard exposed brick and wood. Still, people seem to take their clothes off here all the time, which is a definite draw. There's a good chance that I'll be back to Scarlet and end up knocking it up a star or two. Though as more and more of my friends enter Recovery, any trip to Boystown becomes questionable.

Weakest drinks in town. The barstaff are too preoccupied with each other's bare, adolescent chests to tend to customers. This bar is a pass-through on the Boystown crawl.

Granted I was three sheets to the wind when I went here--maybe even 4 or 5--but seriously, Scarlet's "hipster dance party" was just a bunch of snooty gays standing around. No one was dancing, and no one was hipster and you really disappointed my friend who has a gay hipster fetish. So since things were so dull, I livened them up in the best way I knew how--by sexually assaulting every man in the room, doing hairflips and trying to climb on everything. I seriously don't know how I didn't get kicked out of here. I even threw up in the sink (why didn't I think to do it in the toilet?) and eventually sent myself home in a cab where I tried to walk through a Wendy's drive-thru. But that's another story for another day. All in all, Scarlet does not send out the same vibes as the rest of boys town. Even hydrate is more friendly and has more DANCING. Isn't that what you people like--dancing to gay anthems? I'll just stick to Roscoe's, where they bring me up on stage and crown me their queen of the ball.

Nina M and I live for this place. We had to ban ourselves for awhile.... thank jebus I dont usually have Sundays off. Sunday AFTERNOON dance parties after brunch. $12 bottles of champane. Gay FRIENDLY men. Not crowded. My kind of place! These afternoons turn into wild nights that lead to nothing but trouble and fried ravioli. Yea I said it. Fried ravioli! Sacrlet you have my heart.

I will be honest: I stumbled in here with a group of friends after drinking heavily beforehand at Southport Summerfest. I had an AMAZING lemon drop martini and made friends with a fabulous gay man with gigantic hair. I am not sure if he worked there or was just a regular. However, I was sandwich hump-danced between two obvious lesbians, which was a new experience. No problem with anyone in the gay community- just caught my drunk ass off guard. Otherwise, pretty run of the mill gay bar...but that could be the hazy memory talking. I'll update again when I go there with a clearer head.

This is boystown's best kept secret dive. It's not like Scarlet has the most unique set up, music, decor, etc...but it's the people that make this place so great. The bartenders are always very nice (both their personalities and to look at). The crowd tends to be friendly. Good staff, decent drink specials... We always have a good time dancing at Scarlet.

I came here yesterday to celebrate my Friend Nina's promotion... I loved it here, it was soo much fun.. $12 bottles of champagne..heck yes I'm there... l. Love. This. Place. Within my top 3 favorite bars worldwide... maybe it helps thats its more conveniently located to my house that some of the others i've been to - ha! Usually a good crowd, but always friendly bartenders and staff. Drinks are reasonably priced and the atmosphere is cozy... not overwhelming large like Sidetrack. They often have events that mix it up a little bit. One of my favorites is "Liquid Brunch" on Sunday afternoons. Perfect if you're done with brunch, but not quite ready to let Sunday Funday end. Scarlet can be extremely crowded on certain nights. Definitely crowded in a good way, but you might want to have a drink beforehand or if you're going in stone sober have a shot or two with the bartender!

Been here a few times. It's a great place to go if you are already a little typsy and you want to dance. There is a line sometimes and it's a tiny place so it gets crowded fast! However, the bartenders are cute and their drinks are very strong. Great place to go!

Scarlet was the second stop on Tour de Boystown. (Read my reviews of Wang's, Sidetrack and Minibar for the full story). Not the hopping dance party I had hoped for, but still enjoyable. Our experience was hampered a bit when I discovered at the door that I had lost my ID. Luckily I retraced my steps about 100 feet and found it laying in the middle of the street. A sure sign of things to come. Anyway, upon getting inside for a second time, I noticed that a band was in the middle of tearing down. Sad to have missed it. We stumbled to the back to check our coats and in the process came across a Jeopardy-style trivia game that was giving away shots for correct answers. The questions were extremely tricky (name two characters on LOST). The liquor was cherry-flavored (BARF) but I was lubricated enough not to mind. As with Wang's, the drinks were overpriced. Rick opted for a beer, which I promptly dropped on the floor. Yeah. This was after we did a round of shots, so for anyone keeping track, I am a complete mess after about four drinks. Lots of hot young things but also lots of ladies, so I'm guessing this isn't the hardcore gay hangout. More like where bachelorette parties come to avoid being hassled but still get to take in sexxy dudes. Liked the DJ, but as I said, no one was really shaking their shit, so we left after approximately five seconds (non-drunk time: about 45 minutes). I'm interested in checking out frat night Thursdays.

This bar has been remodeled since their fire last year. They still brought back the same great nights. They are well known for their Thursday night parties (FRAT Night) still and have great specials on beer and mini-pitchers of Long Island Ice Teams. This is a great bar that you can get away from some of the uppity types that invade many bars. Not so stuff in here!

Went to scarlet bar on Halloween, we were visiting the city, and thought hey.. that bar looks cool. So, we went. When we were first there we had our jackets on the back of our chairs and were sitting/standing/ sitting depending on the story being told. halfway into the sitting/standing.. we realized we no longer had a place to sit... right. Ok, I guess it was club time? But you don't remove the chairs from behind people without telling/asking them, and you don't remove take the chairs away while someone is using them. Like any other bar.. you wait until that patron has left and take the remaining chair. ugh. We paid out and didn't return for the duration of our trip.

This place is a must on Thursday nights.... My friend lured me here with promises of $5 40 oz. and giant bowls of Cheetos. Well, he delivered. If you can stomach the B.O. stench, and the ridic crowd, its worth it. I heart the DJ, even if he is in gay porn? oh, the gay rumor mill.... I danced my ass off last time I went, and got called "party girl" all night by all the MO's. (yelp, don't flag me for saying MO's. K thx.)

I really like Scarlet. It's much more chill than other boystown bars, but still gets crazy from time to time (read - Thursdays, later at night Fri/Sat, and Sundays). Some of the other bars in boystown (I'm looking at you, minibar) have a very specific 'clientèle' where everyone looks like carbon copies of each other. Scarlet is the opposite of that, a delicious hodgepodge of the community and visitors. It makes for an interesting night, whether it's more quiet, or packed to the hilt. I enjoy coming to Scarlet to start and/or end my night out on Halsted. The bartenders are all friendly and attentive. Practical things: - Easy coat check, right by the entrance - Two bars, one in the front and one in the back - They have LOTS of events, check out their fbook page - You can also have your own event there, for pretty competitive pricing - No Cover, ever! - single stall bathrooms, always clean, always stocked

I stopped in with a favorite Yelper for a short rock-star visit on a Sunday night to wish a new friend a happy birthday. DJ Psycho Bitch was laying down some fab tunes, so I grabbed a drink and let the music move me. I couldn't help it! My partner-in-crime for the evening directed us here and pointed out that one of my favorite bartenders was stashed away at the back bar! If the evening's Yelp rock-star tour wasn't enough, that bonus made my night even better! As it turns out, this place is quite the hidden gem and full of treasures. Snap! I stepped through a thick set of curtains and into a David Lynch dream. Enter the red-hot lair! A smaller back bar greeted me and led me into a more intimate setting away from the bustling dance music. A long, cozy-looking couch just begged for me to come back in again with a hottie to do a full inspection. Talk about ambiance! As I exited back into the main bar, I expected to find a giant and a dancing midget speaking in a mysterious language. Almost. There was a nearly naked dancing man dressed in a white g-string at the front of the bar. Although I don't know if this is a regular occurrence, I made a mental note to come back again with my pals that would thoroughly appreciate dancing boys. I should point out that by his shoes alone, I think my girlies may have a better shot. Though, I'm not one to judge. The other bartenders were serving up drink specials, mostly involving vodka. The regular prices are a little high, but nothing more than I would expect for the area. Scarlet, I don't give a damn what you have in store for me on my next visit. Be assured, I'll find myself on a path that points me back here again.

I absolutely love, love, love this bar! the staff is extremely friendly and the drinks are priced right and are NOT weak unlike mini bar ( god i hate that bar). The music is always great, cant go wrong with todays top 40 and techno. non of the R&B crap. if i wanted that i would go hang out downtown or wrigleyville with the breeders. i want dance dance dance! I adore the new decor. it feels very posh but not over done. I feel relaxed there. There are some nights and occasions where it is wall to wall people and hard to walk around but what do you expect from a popular bar. kudos to scarlet! you have my hard earned cash for when i need a good night drinks!

Let's see ... Assless chaps, flagrant handjobs, phallic ballons with whipped cream jizz, bathroom beauty tips, 90:10 alcohol-ratio cocktails, more assless chaps, three trannies and a ten minute conversation with a stripper dosed in Burberry cologne with a penchant for tugging on his cock while chatting you up. Yeah, I'd live here.

Note: The only reason I did not give this place 4 or 5 stars is because I don't think it compares to Roscoe's, Sidetrack, Hydrate, etc. But that does not mean that I don't love it here! If I were to describe Scarlet to somebody, I would say "its like minibar, only better/worse, depending on how you look at it. Let's break it down: Better: -same amount space, but not as crowded as minibar/cocktail -two main rooms and a mini-dancfloor (main bar in front, dance area in the middle, lounge area in the back with another bar) -music is different in both rooms -(gasp) their bartenders do not look the same! There is one Asian/Filipino bartender in the back on Saturdays, and in the front there is a white and black guy. very refreshing! -cute shaved-headed (presumably) lesbian who waits on you at the tables -"boys gone wild video" playing in the backroom -cheap drinks -diverse crowd Worse: -not as packed/crowded (if you're looking for that) -not as attractive/fake as minibar -bartenders not as hott as other places -people don't dance on the "dancefloor" -outdoor area in back is never open (who knows why) Other interesting bits of information: --I went last Saturday (for the 3rd or 4th time) and Scarlet was celebrating Madonna's birthday, which meant: free cupcakes and "happy birthday madonna" shots, and a $5 "mini" pitcher of vodka lemonade. That drink alone, last me almost 2 hours, and I was sufficiently tipsy. --interestingly enough, there was a price difference in the drinks between the front bar and the back bar. My boyfriend ordered a dirty martini in the front for $9 and in the back for $6 (he said the one from the back was better). --standard drinks are $5 (vodka cran, rum and coke, gin and tonic, etc) and well worth it! --the long island is made using a "long island mix", so it wasn't as good. All in all, this place is a great spot to hit-up if you're looking for a low-key night, or as a nice warm-up before a crazy evening. Enjoy!

Maybe despite or because of the stained glass backdrops at the bar, I liked it. $5 rum and cokes (strong) in a jug or something. I'm hungover and I don't really remember. But it was a good mix of people. It wasn't super gay and by the end of the night, I felt comfortable enough to ask everyone just how gay they were. Like Floyd, the union plummer/Blue Island male stripper. "Floyd, so are you at least a little gay?" He said no but I didn't believe him.

Stop two with David S. and company was Scarlet. I believe Scarlet came out of the Gentry on Halsted, when it went out of business. This is the smallest of the Chicago gay bars I've been to and it's still pretty big, a great space, I thought. They have this cool stained glass art work, scarlet lighting and decor (shocker?!) but it all looks very sexy and chic. The drinks were really good, and some of their trademark cocktails had quite the spate of interesting names I have to say, sadly, I'd had one to many drinks to remember what they were. I do remember laughing about them with Andy F. and David though. The crowd was pretty cool, diverse and I definitely got checked out by a hoot of cuties and another spate of not-so-cuties. Always fun and very flattering! :-) I really enjoyed the music here, mainstream pop/rock, and a dance, good times all around!

Very cool gay bar in Boystown. It's not particularly big, but I really the loungey feel and atmosphere. This is definitely more upscale than some of the other places in the neighborhood, and this reflects in the drink prices (not very cheap), but I really enjoyed it. The crowd was good looking, the music was good, and the drinks pretty strong. I ordered one of the their specialty cocktails: the scarlet martini ($9 or so). It was pretty strong and I liked it (although I was not a huge fan of the faint vanilla taste). Definitely a place I could see myself coming back to a lot.

I was a big fan of Gentry on Halsted, and I want to like Scarlet. (really I do) But by changing the look of the place, some how they changed the comfortable feeling that they had before. The staff is still amazing, you'll have to look long and hard to find a bar staff that is as friendly as these guys. I guess you could describe the new decor as trendy. It's a lot of wood and a lot of red. (sorry a lot of scarlet) The remodeling they did has made much better use of the space that they have and it still has that new smell. (paint and varnish) I still enjoy the place, mostly because of the staff but I'm disappointed that the cozy feel they had before is gone AND that they don't carry Effen Vodka anymore. Note: While proof-reading I realized I used the following phrases while reviewing a gay bar: "long and hard" and "a lot of wood". My apologies, it was purely accidental.

only appropriate to make my 100th review one of the first places my roommate and i visited when we moved to chicago. i think it really set the bar high for our experiences in the gayborhood :) scarlet is everything a boystown bar should be. crowded, bouncing to a techno beat, strong drinks, and plenty of eye candy that has no interest what so ever in hitting on me. its fun to come here whether it's crowded or empty, but take note that the two are entirely different beasts. when its crowded, you are guaranateed fun people watching, music to dance to and great conversations. when its empty, you're guaranteed a really fun (and funny) staff to chit chat with and fabulously strong drinks . not to mention the really great weekly drink specials ($5 martinis?! yes plz) and the costume parties (my roommate and i dropped in on angel/devil night...yes)!!! i always have a great time there. its quirky, high energy and fun!

I went to Scarlet for an advertised hipster dance party. Upon arrival there were no hipsters, no dance, and certainly no party. The bar is small, cramped and there weren't even that many people there. All the people that worked there acted entitled and were rude. Me and my friends tried to bring the dance party to scarlet, but just ended up leaving because we were getting so many weird looks.

Scarlet is the newest addition to the nightlife options on Halsted Street, and the tenant of the former Gentry piano bar. The owners have done a lot to the interior to upgrade it to a nice upscale lounge/bar. One of my friends bartends here, so I've already been several times. They are planning a full opening around Dec. 7. As the name might suggest, the interior features scarlet hues and some nice decor. At the back bar there's very cool stained glass flanking the bar and low tables. They have some cool TVs that double as mirrors when they're not on and a DJ after 10 or so on the weekends and the bar is non-smoking (for the last month you can smoke indoors in the city.) Overall, it's a good addition and a much needed upgrade from the former space. It's nothing new or different for the Chicago gay bar scene, but a nice place to stop in. The crowd is definitely more of the S&M (stand and model) crowd that likes to think they just walked off an A&F catalog page...not my type of thing, but if you're into it - you've hit the jackpot. They do a lot of martinis and mixed drinks, so the beer selection is lacking, but I still find plenty to drink whenever I go.

I hadn't been here since they re-opened, but was looking for a fun place to take my girl for drinks and maybe a little dancing. Michael at the back bar was great - may have gotten me smashed on the strongest g&t of my life, but great. Not saying it's totally mixed, but there were other girls there too and felt very comfortable. And we could dance! probably left before the party really got started, but good music and people were moving. so - no cover, good drinks, great music....we'll be back!

Hands down my favorite bar on the Halsted Strip. The prices are very comparable to everywhere else and the staff is amazing! I am a lesbian and many times at gay bars lesbians feel uncomfortable and unwelcome. Well this is not the case at all at Scarlet. I love going there and I always feel welcome. This has actually become one of the new hangouts on the strip for lesbians. In seems as though in the last few months every lesbian bday party or celebration I've gone to has been here. Also, Sunday Funday is the BEST at Scarlet. Start drinking at 2pm with $12 bottles of champagne and you will be home and in bed by 8pm and ready for your workday monday at 8am after 12 full hours of sleep! :-)

Another vodka free hosted bar. What can I say broke hipster lead us to a free drink night that got me and my friend tore up from the floor up. It was free vodka and red bull for one hour. The interior design was great very cozy an cute. The bathroom was very dark and the toilet was clogged. But oh well. I had a great time for a free night out. The workers were extremely funny and friendly.

I was pick pocketed as this bar! This bar has frequent pick pocketing cases. The bar didn't even have the decency to let me know they never found my wallet. I was contacted when it was found in the garbage can of a different bar with two other wallets. A bar that doesn't take care of their customers in not worth going to.

Terrific small bar where the staff and guests are extremely friendly and warm. Very charming, warm and full of character. Had a super time here for New Year's Eve and the DJ was out of this world (especially early in the night with vocal music). I will be a regular from now on. Highly recommend a visit.

Loved the feel of this bar, and the Scarlet Martini (with POM!) was amazing. They definitely have generous pours, because I only had *two* drinks, and early, here, and the next day I was paying for them. The people here are nice, not pretentious at all, and very fun to talk to. My only regret was not getting the number of the hot, and possibly straight (!) , guy I was talking to... But I'll definitely be back. Extra stars for the complimentary coat check!!

Will keep it short. First visit here, after reopening due to the fire. $8 for an extremely weak vodka tonic. The glass was 90% ice ... maybe 3 oz of liquid at most. You want to make customers happy, make a better first impression after your reopening than this. Won't be going back.

Stumbled over here on a Friday for an advertised hipster party and FOUND NOTHING OF THE SORT. For the most part boring, the DJ ignored us, more than one time a friend was told to stop hopping up on the DJ booth, she also fell a bunch of times and threw up in the sink in the bathroom. Soooo, fun times?

Ok, I'm not one to leave bad reviews unless is it well deserved... Being too negative just isn't a good shade. Hiring bartenders based on their ability to fill out a sleeveless shirt really gets in the way of my ability to tie on a good buzz... especially when I'm spending 60 bucks at your establishment. news flash bartender... just because I'm gay doesn't mean all you need to know how to make is a vodka cranberry. Either train your staff, or don't charge me 10 bucks for something that was premixed before I even got there.. Word of advise party people, either rip shots before you go here, or order beers, at least you'll know you're actually getting alcohol in your drink

This is one of my favorite boyztown bars. I used to enjoy Roscoes when I did a weekend trip to Chicago but the past few years they have had so many women going there you didn't even know you were in a boyztown gay bar. The age range here is mixed and you will feel comfortable regardless of if you are the young age of the typical Spin customer or the other end of being the typical little Jims customer. There are your share of fag hags here, but it isn't like Roscoes where they overrun the place, and the majority of the people are still gay men and you can tell you are definitely in a boyztown gay bar. The drinks are very reasonable (something like $5 for a martini) and are poured strong. Bar staff is VERY friendly. I have never been charged a cover or had to wait outside in a line and if I do have to wait in line for a drink at the bar it is a very short wait. The bar is also very nice on the inside and recently remodled due to their fire.

Came here on a Wednesday night and discovered their $5 martini special. Lots to like here... nice decor and atmosphere, friendly bartender, and the music was good although a little on the loud side. If there's only 10 people in the bar, the music doesn't have to be super loud. But, I appreciated the good mix of indie dance and other dance genres.

Reading yelps is always fun, especially when you throw the gay element into it. I don't know who is more funny db, the old strip joint loving guy who went to frat night at Scarlet and was upset that there were drunk young people playing games or gayb, the obvious disgruntled ex-employee. The visual of someone hanging virtually upside down to feel the water's temp did make me laugh though. Scarlet's a fun bar with good specials and friendly bartenders. Thursday and Sunday afternoons seem to be a don't miss for the non- Sidetracks crowd. Weekends get busy a little later, so we always stop by for a pre-drink or two and end up back there. As most people know Scarlet was closed for most of 2009 recovering from fire damage. The street definitely missed going there as an option.

Loved stopping here first with my manpal and we had some great bacardi specials and a "forty"..lol : ) Nice people. Nice view. Great music, where we were singing and dancing to the tops of our lungs. We made lots of new friends here. I will def go back here and party it up. My fav bar in boyztown!

The best part about this bar are their bathrooms. I love a single stall bathroom, and this one always seems to be clean. The decor is pretty, but the clientele are a bit obnoxious. The music always seems pleasing, but I never stay around long enough to see if that's consistent. The prices are pretty high for Boystown, and it really isn't worth dealing with the crowd.

I have never had a problem with this place til today! I went to go to the bathroom and there was a guy who was waiting. I said the mens bathroom is over there. He goes O I need private time. I go will there is only one toliet for the ladies and I just need to check my eye as it got hit moments before. So when the lady came out the bathroom I went in the guy then proceeds to call me out my name! I was not even in the bathroom for a minute..like I said I just wanted to check my eye. So we become combative with each other. He says something to one of the "ladies working there" and she gets security and they tell me I have to leave. No asked what was the problem or even what happened. He knew the people or person and that was that. I was not at fault for using a bathroom that was for women! I felt they had judeged me as another angey lesbian which I'm not! I was treated wrongly and someone should have said something to him. But since they wre in a click no one did! I will not be returning to this place until some sort of action is taken for this !

Stopped in for one beer to check this place out. Scarlet is nothing to rave over but it seems to be a good place to start the night out....meet the rest of your crew, grab a beer and listen to the DJ spin some Kaskade mixes.

So I'm one of 'those guys' that goes out on a Wednesday night. Yeah. Even though it was basically empty, 1:00am and just my friends and I, we had a great time and the bartender, Tom(?) (I was a little out of it, ahem) was really sweet and talkative. The mug concept that they have is really interesting--they use a beer pint mug and then put mixed drinks in it; they cycle through specials (taking one dollar off for the special) and it's A LOT of alcohol for $5. The music wasn't loud, there was lots of room to stand and my friend loved his Scarletini (the name made me gag too). Check it out!

Love the vibe. The people are pretty nice, and I got a stoli for $4 on a Wednesday. The DJ was playing crazy mashups that we all loved. I've been many a night at this locale, and will definitely be back -- a much more interesting place to spend time than standing around at Sidetracks (with an "s").

I had a lot of fun here. I was only able to stay long enough to have a drink, say hi to a few people I haven't seen in a while, then head out... but I had a great time. No bad vibes, no pushing and shoving even thought it was crazy packed. I definitely want to go back!

I was out the other night with a bunch of yelpers when we decided to leave our Roscoe's meeting place and venture forth in to the vast area of Boystown. Our virtual tour guide Andy F steered us toward Scarlet. This lovely little bar had a DJ dropping some hot beats, our door man told us there was complimentary coat check, the crowd was lively, the setting was chill and dimly lit with, scarlet lighting (what else would you expect?), and the friendly bartenders were imbibing people. I didn't stay that long here, mainly because it had been a really long day and my eyes were already starting to droop. However I did stay long enough to have a drink with this friendly crowd and to come away saying, "Not a shabby find.. I'll probably be back."

Scarlet is one my regular favorites in Chicago. While it could never take the place of my beloved Sidetrack (since I have a penchant for dating guys in their 30's and that's pretty much ALL of Sidetrack), this ranks right up there. I have yet to have a bad time at Scarlet. Even when the place is empty and it's just me and my friends, it's always fun. The bartenders are great, especially Jared. I make sure to say hi to him whenever I am there, and he is always friendly to me...a welcome change from the attitude-loaded bartenders at Minibar! Favorite night is definitely Thursday...Fratboy Thursdays are a must on my schedule, especially when I can work from home on Friday. The crowd, for those of you who have not been, is pretty mixed. I see some people looking to cruise and I see people looking to hangout. It is not as meat markety as some of the bars in Boystown. The only thing I dislike? The main bar itself is pretty big, which limits the space a little bit. Drink Up!

I went to the new Sunday night party here and hand a great deal of fun. It was busy but not too packed. The environment is very classy/loungey but with that pornstar dancing on a box kind of appeal. There is plenty of seating and room to move in. I appeared here as mini cher and was well received, so all in all not bad.

It's nice to go into a bar that is clean, inviting, and still busy on a Wednesday night. Good music and good company. Scarlet has all that! On the other side of that, Scarlet is just not place I would want to spend all the rest of my waking moments. There weren't a lot of places where groups more than 2 could hang out, so I had to sit on one of the ottomans, and totally felt out of place. I also like friendly wait staff, but it's very clear when the attendant is flirting for tips, and ours was practically bending over and giving his virginity away...well if there was any to be taken. I probably won't be coming back unless my man really wants to visit again for Wednesday $3 Long Islands which is totally a great deal. Just a bit too sweet for me though. I like my drinks a bit harder.

i like scarlet, it's a little less flashy than some of the other places in Btown. the drinks are strong and i always have an interesting time when i go here.
