We ordered delivery based on the reviews and we were not disappointed! Excellent experience starting with the ordering and speed completed by the delivery lady was who was extra friendly. The food was great, the egg-rolls crisp and cook to perfection, one of the best cashew chicken we have had. I personally think the fried rice lacks a bit of soy sauce, but easily fixed by adding a little bit on your own.

I've tried Rice Thai Cafe before - maybe 3 times, and in the past I would have given them 1 or 2 stars, but I went yesterday, and it wasn't as bad as the last time. The service was friendly enough, and the food was prepared very fast (maybe too fast?). I got the Tom Yum Soup with Tofu, which I believe was pretty tasty, with a lot of tofu. But, it was so spicy that I couldn't really take in any subtleties of flavors, and I think it was a bit lacking on vegetables. I also got Chicken Pad See Eiw, which tasted good, but, but was a little too wet, and a little lacking on chicken & veggies. Not bad. But, not amazing. Again, I've been here a few times before, and I think this was the best food they've made for me. I thought - "Hmmmm, maybe they got a new cook over there??". So, in the end, I suppose it was decent, but definitely not the best Thai food in Chicago. I would highly recommend Star of Siam or Joy's. But, Rice Thai can work in a pinch. 2.5 stars for the food, and .5 star extra because it's across the street from my home. Enjoy!

This place has some great Thai fried rice and Pad Se Ewe. I wasn't a fan of their Chicken Satay and their Panang, but the fried rice was pretty solid and satisfies any fried rice craving. The Pad Se Ewe doesn't have the usual pungent scent nor taste but has thicker noodles, a better sauce, and fills your greasy lo-mein/stir- fried noodle cravings. There is some parking found on the street (on Sheridan), but you might have to look around. The staff are quite sweethearts. +Thai fried rice +Pad Se Ewe +limited street parking

One of the most reliable places in the neighborhood. Always good for take out. Haven't tried the sushi side of things, but all of the Thai food we've tried we've been happy with including: cashew chicken, pad thai, tom yam soup, thai iced tea, crab rangoon. We probably order out here at least once a month, usually twice a month. They're quick, well priced, and again, reliable. Not a great place for a date or anything like that. Eating in consists of about 4 2-person tables total. During nicer weather they may have tables outside too. But be wary if you're eating in that space may be limited!

I love small dives w great owners. I thought the menu was a bit too limiting so I asked the owner for recommendations. I ordered the shrimp salad... I could not believe how clean, big and the fresh the shrimps were. Everything was really good. I would give this place 5 stars but I wish their menu had more choices.

Rice Thai is a solid staple for the Rogers Park Area! The food it delicious and the price is on par with what they serve. Last time I went, I got an avocado roll, Miso soup, and a Thai Tea. All were served up quickly, tasted great (especially for the cost) and hit the spot. Rice Thai is a definite thumbs up... it's just a shame there are not more seats.

Oh man! I have eaten here at least 2 or 3 times and I can't believe I haven't written a review yet. I LOVE crab Rangoon (like, LOVE) and I have always been so happy with the ones from here. I have also had sushi (although I unhelpfully can't recall exactly which kinds) which was also extremely delicious. Additionally, the owner is always warm, kind, friendly, and attentive. The space itself is a little small but it certainly feels cozy and not claustrophobic. Definitely get the crab Rangoon and then go see a movie next door! :-)

Was in search of some tasty fare in the area with one of my bffs (she's actually moving to the top of the list with my Christmas/Birthday awesomeness gift of signed copy of John Taylor's book! hehehe, I'm a little girl again!!!) oh yea, back to the review. This restaurant had three or four yelp stars so we had to try it since she's new to this area and hasn't ventured out. She's Chinese and really knows what's good and what isn't, and for Thai, she like it. I too enjoyed everything we had. We ordered the egg rolls which were crisp and not oily and very fresh tasting. I ordered the chicken curry rice and she ordered the chicken lad nar something or other. Both were prepared fresh and tasted very good. I wish I could of finished it all but had to take part of it home and have it as a morning snack and it was still good. Sorry to hear other people having a bad experience. Maybe it was a bad night? Don't know. Maybe my Asian food standards are low? Naw, I don't think so.

I tried this place for the first time today and I was extremely impressed. The staff is very friendly and the service was very quick. I ordered the Pad Thai and it was delicious. I can't wait to eat there again.

We ordered the spring rolls, shrimp maki and thai fried rice. All were made well but not anything special. It's a good place to have a low - key meal. The owners are very friendly and do their best to make you happy. Quick service too!

Despite the amalgam of Thai/Japanese fusion places littering Rogers Park, this place has been the most authentic Thai in my opinion. The Pad Thai and the Pad See Ew were both extremely flavorful and delicious. My friend got a beef and shrimp entree and the price was reasonable and they gave a good sized serving of rice. Also, the owners were very friendly and understanding when my friends and I waited a long time for the whole group to get there. My only gripe would be that the space inside is really small so everything and everyone is right night to every other person. Ps. The strawberry bubble tea is the bomb diggity

I remember going here when I left The New 400. It was my first time trying nori and I thought it was awful. Problem is that I'm used to eating rolls made of rice (ex. Loving Hut) so it took some getting used to. The service is very friendly. I'd give the place five stars for customer service. However, I hadn't been there in a couple of years, couldn't remember why and ordered a delivery. I love Thai food and I enjoy the seasoning from other restaurants, but I was not into this particular meal at all. The edamame was slightly soggy, and they're usually a bit crunchier. The Thai fried rice didn't have the seasoning I'm used to at other restaurants. It just tasted like plain brown rice with vegetables and tofu. The avocado maki rolls were good, but I always feel like I can REALLY taste the nori. And I can't remember the last time I had maki rolls without cabbage. They just give you the wasabi. The vegetable maki rolls with avocado, carrots and cucumbers were pretty okay, but I've had better. The food isn't bad but I've had much better food at other Thai food locations. Something about it reminds me of leftovers or buffet style food. They're in a good location near The New 400 so I see why they always have customers but I'd rather drive somewhere else.

After moving to Rogers Park, my editor told me to try Rice Thai. I discovered the restaurant was only about a block from where I live. One cold and snowy day, I decided to pop in and try their lunch special. $6.45 for soup, appetizer and entree was too good to pass up. The interior is very small and I imagine they do most of their business through takeout. They have the space for a patio in the summer. I'll eat there on the patio but I probably won't sit inside again. The hot miso soup was an instant full-body warmer after I stepped in from the snow. The potstickers were big and very good, but they were fried which I did not expect. For my entree, I chose the basil chicken. It was very authentic. They use ground chicken! It wasn't as spicy as I'd hoped but they did bring me some good chile sauce. The people working there were very friendly and checked to make sure I enjoyed everything. In short: I sent back empty plates and left with a full belly for under eight bucks. That's a good lunch in my book. I'm eager to try some of their other menu items.

I really, really wanted to like this place. I moved to the area a few months ago and had a bad experience at the adjacent Chinese place. I noticed this place was usually busy, which is a good sign. I finally decided to order some fried rice, egg rolls and crab rangoon. The man who appears to own it is extremely friendly. But what really counts for any restaurant is the food. The best way to describe the way the food looked was "old." Still, I went ahead and tried it and it still tasted old. Like it had been sitting around for ages and then just warmed up. The egg rolls and crab rangoon were so greasy -- the worst I've ever had in my life. The rice was also stale. I don't know what it is about the Asian fare in this few block radius, but it is very substandard. The Japanese joint had decent sushi - but their fried rice was just old looking and very sad. Maybe I'm just spoiled -- the one thing I could always get that was really, really good in California was Asian food. The only place so far that really met my standards have been Hello, Sushi and the Blue Elephant. The rest have really sucked, including a few in the downtown area. At least I have these two. But at this rate, I'm not inclined to try any others in the city. Perhaps Rice Thai has other dishes that are made with fresh ingredients, but clearly, what I got yesterday was not - so it is where it belongs and should have been put quite a while ago -- in the trash. What a waste of $18. That's a lot of money to pay for some fried rice and two appetizers. That's the worst part of all.

Went here to get takeout but was cheated. The owner suggested to spend at least $25 to get a free crab rangoon, but charged me half price for it instead! I questioned the extra charge after I paid and reviewed the prices listed on the menu and they were quite unapologetic. Said that I had to pay for tax for the free item, which I argued could not possibly be $2.50 since the vrab rangoon was only $4.99. Plus, if it's free, I shouldn't be taxed on it. Disgusting.

When I hear "Chinese food," my mind immediately associates it with "sodium," and I usually try to limit my Chinese food intake to a handful of times a year. Today happened to be one of those days where I gave in. I had planned on trying this Chinese restaurant two doors down called Great Wall, but the sign above Rice Thai Cafe said "sushi," and you can't beat that. I had just started recovering from a horrendous sushi experience at the dining halls--I am not sure what sort of cardboard I ate, but it was not sushi. Anyway, I was in the mood and ordered the crunchy roll and spring rolls. The cashier/host/waiter (it was a small place) was very nice, and offered me water while I waited for my order to-go. My crunch roll at first glance disappointed me. There was ample crab and tempura, but where were the veggies--the carrots, cucumber, and avocado? Nowhere to be found. Nevertheless, I tried a roll and was blown away! It was phenomenal--the sweet crab meat, fresh rice, salty and crunchy tempura all blended together to form the perfect yin and yang of sushi. The rolls were also the perfect eating size for one-biters. My spring rolls looked fantastic, but were overpoweringly sweet. The outside had a nice light and crispy texture, and there was really nothing wrong with them other than they lacked...something. I tried to remedy them with wasabi and soy sauce, which helped a bit. Overall, a great place, fast, reasonably priced, and pretty darn tasty.

It's not a fancy sitdown restaurant, but if you like small family restaurants with good food at a great value, check it out. It's so unassuming outside you would miss it driving by on Sheridan. I've had pad Thai a couple of times, and it's always prompt and hot--I'm picky about my tofu, but I love the way they prepare it. Good peanut and egg distribution too and generous portions without being wasteful. Typically I will not finish in one sitting...but then change my mind and finish. It's not a two-meals-from one-entree type place, but that's good business in my opinion. Very friendly shopkeepers, and especially fresh vegetables for a place of this size. Check it out before a movie sometime.

Awesome egg rolls and the best pad se ew I've ever had. Plus the food is every affordable. Staff very welcoming too. Figures it's an hour away from home. Would definitely eat there again if I'm in the neighborhood.

They're fast and delicious and pretty cheap too. Just the sweetest owners ever! It makes my evening to call when I get off at Loyola station after a long day at work and walk straight there to pick up my hot and ready pad thai. Just perfect!

  • Pennie B.

I ordered the Pineapple Fried Rice. Let me just say this, the quality of their food is better if you sit down to eat there. I didn't have time for that, so against my better judgement, I took mines to go. It was terrible. First off, they charge you a $1 for one meat, when it should be included as your first choice of meat that's included with the dish. (They've been running that game for years. I won't even argue that point with them anymore.) Secondly, I paid the extra $2 for shrimp, and I got 2 shrimp in my dish. There was a little third one, but asides from being little, it looked like it had been recooked. Also, I ordered some egg rolls. You might as well just be eating wonton wrappers, as there is nothing in there. Anyway, I will find somewhere else to spend my $$$!

Best pad thai I've ever had. The owners are so nice and recognize you even if you've only been there once. The crab Rangoon are perfect and crispy but have actual flavor. I go here like once a week.

I live down the street from Rice and I try to eat there every week. After trying almost half of their menu, I can honestly say I have never been disappointed. I am especially fond of the Pad See Eiw (make sure to ask for the crispy noodles!) and the Rama chicken. The restaurant itself is pretty tiny but a fun little place to sit down to eat. There is a great patio for the summer time. This place is BYOB which is always a plus (in my opinion). The price is right on and the service is some of the friendliest I have had at any restaurant in the city. I highly recommend Rice to any Thai food lover.

About four weeks ago I stopped by Thai Rice and Sushi. I tried the Pad Lard Nar (stir fried wide flat rice noodle with broccoli topped with special gravy). It was good for the price ($6.95 plus tax). The "special gravy" blended in very well with the other ingredients. The noodles were too soft for me but someone else might not mind. Just remember that the portions are small. If you have a large appetite then you will not get full from one dish. About three weeks ago I stopped by the Thai cafe after work. I purchased the Thai fried rice with chicken. It was delicious. The rice isn't too greasy or fried too much. The dish includes scrambled eggs, onion, tomato, and carrots for $6.95 plus tax. I was surprised the dish tasted so good because normally fried rice is no different than McDonald's. You ordered it because it is fast and it is difficult to mess up. Lol. They do have a minimum purchase with debit or credit card of $7 but I have read that restaurants are not allowed to set minimums. I believe you

  • Michael G.

Surprised at the above average reviews on this place. I live across the street and know enough to avoid it unless I'm absolutely desperate for Thai food within walking distance. The food is uniformly awful. And they've figured out ways to screw up slam dunk standards like edamame & pad thai. The place also offers sushi, which sends a chill through my spine to think about -- if you can't handle edamame, I don't want you handling raw fish. Hole in the wall interior, bad food (but do the Loyola undergraduates know any better?), bad/odd service (they never pack to-go orders with napkins or utensils -- if you ask, they will grudgingly give you a fork & one cocktail napkin). With a great Thai community full of restaurants just a few L stops south, there is no reason to eat here, unless you're desperate. But be warned, you will be disappointed even by desperation standards.

I had spent the entire day on airplanes and sitting in airports as I made my way across the country to Chicago, and all I wanted was some tasty grub. Rice Thai Cafe was within easy walking distance to my new place, so I decided to try it. Eesh! I ordered fresh tofu spring rolls, tofu pad see ew, and the cucumber salad. Fresh spring rolls aren't. Supposed. To be made. With the same kind of spring roll wrapping used for fried spring rolls. Blech! Really gross. The sauce it was served with was also not quite right - tasted like hoisin straight out of a jar. Cucumber salad - nothing but sliced cucumbers. Served with sweet vinegar. Er... Usually there's at least a little bit of something in a cucumber salad to jazz it up. Not here. Pad see ew - Meh. Not horrible, but too sweet for my taste, and the noodle-to-other stuff ratio was too high to be worth the cost. I won't be going back here again :( Which is a bummer, because I would have been really excited to have great Thai food so close by.

I just had 20 minutes to have some dinner, it was late and I didn't know the area. I decided to try Rice Thai Cafe, and that was such a good choice. I ordered a Thai Massaman and it was totally mouthwatering. I just cannot understand the bad reviews on this place. Maybe people are way too used to regular, non-genuine asian food. One of the best dishes I've tried in America so far. The service was simply as it should be, I felt comfortable. Notice that I have just been here once and I just ate one dish. If you want to try something new, go for the Massaman. It is SO cheap.

  • Oluwatope F.

Great biz, the owners are very nice, the food is flavorful and freshly made before your eyes :-) My one complaint is that the noodle dishes lack enough vegetables but at least they are fresh and not a frozen veggie mix like some places. The prices are reasonable as well. But don't expect to sit down and have a date here or anything it is better as a carryout place.

  • Katharine T.

I really want to like this place because it is close, fairly cheap and the owners are very friendly but the food is just very very bad. Last night was the last time we will ever give this place a chance. We have had their "Pad Thai" a couple times, both with chicken and shrimp. It is nothing like Pad Thai you will get at other average to delicious Thai restaurants. The noodles are thin and taste mostly of molasses, this is not delicious or what I expect from Pad Thai. Their Bangkok Chicken is horrible. The quality of chicken is so bad, and so grossly fried you can barely bite into it. It is supposed to come with peppers, onions and cashews but mine came with no cashews and maybe two peppers and onions total. The chicken was literally not edible. Their crab rangoon is about a 1 1/2 on a scale of 5. 5 being the best. They are small, barely filled fried pieces of dough. I order crab rangoon for the filling obviously and there just isn't enough to justify eating these. What little filling is in them does not taste bad, it is just basically non-existent. We have had their Chicken Rama too, long ago, I do not remember it being bad but I do not remember it being good either. Their food seems to be either unremarkable, not really Thai or horrible. Considering the low quality and poor taste I cannot really say this place is cheap, it just ends up being a bad meal, a waste of money and a waste of calories. There are many better Thai places in Evanston that I would rather travel for.

Fantastic Thai food in Rogers Park! Awesome customer service & absolutely wonderfully tasting full menu. The crab rangoons are especially amazing. Beautiful, intimate dining area as well. Prices are very reasonable.

I have ordered from this place several times, it's mediocre but it will do if I don't feel like going too far for a meal. Today, I ordered Pad See Ew and Garlic Chicken for carryout. $20, not bad. Opened it up, poured my rice into the garlic chicken, and there it was. A long, coarse, curly pubic hair. I don't know who was scratching their balls and then cooking, but I can't bring myself to ever order/eat there again. Ever.

The people here were really friendly, and I understand that it is a really tiny restaurant. But my food was incredibly boring. I ordered something that is usually relatively spicy in other restaurants and it was just... plain? My fiance ordered her go to and our meals basically tasted the same, though hers was a little sweeter than mine. The vegetables looks to be frozen and they were exactly the same combination in both meals (not like similar flavor palate because it's a regional cuisine, like, the same exact things) and included celery. I don't know. I would eat here if I were desperate, but I'm not going to go out of my way to go back.

The owners are super nice and the main reason for returning and for their 4-stars. Their appetizers were a miss but their entrees were tasty. My fiance ordered the California roll for an appetizer... yeah I know, a roll from a thai restaurant, not sure why he did but eh... it wasn't very good and wasn't expecting it to be so I didn't count it against them. Ordered the Tom Kha w/ Tofu... my favorite soup ever, but their version was TOO SWEET with coconut and there was not enough sour/lemongrass/kaffir lime leaves. I took two sips and left it. Very disappointed but then again, it's a hit-and-miss w/ Tom Kha. Fiance ordered the Chicken Teriyaki, which was delicious! I had the Massaman curry (asked for spicy) and it was really good too. Can't go wrong w/ Massaman! The portions were good for the price and it didn't take too long to make (15 mins). We tried their Thai Coffee........ FANTASTIC! We typically order the Thai Tea at Thai Restaurants but we found a new favorite.

Been gone for years and when I come home I stop there. Jim and his wife take the time to know you and your preferences. Having actually been to Thailand I can say with certainty that RTC is as authentic in portion sizes and taste as it gets. For a real experience in Thai cuisine give it a whirl.

I am shocked to see bad reviews. This place has awesome food! I could see people feeling a little awkward because the restaurant is so small, but you can always get take out or delivery. The food is great and is prepared quickly! I have had the red Thai basil dish with chicken and veggies and my fiance has had dishes with pork and all of them have been out of this world! This place is one of rogers park's best kept secrets.

I stopped by here for a quick bite to eat and it was alright. In a heavily populated Thai and other Asian restaurants in the neighborhood, Rice Thai Cafe is near the top. Their prices are pretty fair. I had the Pad Thai, but it was missing a "wow factor." I was expecting more favor. I had an appetizer of California sushi rolls and they were pretty good. Being a Loyola Student on a cheap budget, I would go back. Definitely check out the lunch specials.

  • Rebecca W.

I love this place. Their crab rangoon, vegetable potstickers and chicken satay are great - the sauces that come with them are all different and perfect. I've never had anything I haven't liked on the main menu, but I have liked the chicken teriyaki best. I usually go with a friend who orders the same thing all the time, and the woman who works the counter always remembers her special requests. When I've gone by myself she asks me where my friend is, which is cute. The prices are very reasonable and the service great. A really nice place for a quick lunch!

I have been very happy with everything I've tried here. I'm a big fan of the pad thai, made spicy. I mean, yeah - it's pad thai - usually a decent dish anywhere, but I especially like it from here. I also like the crab rangoon which I usually don't care much for. Good place around the corner.

  • Leslie R.

I go here a lot, but it never really impresses. They have great pad thai and super delish Thai iced tea (I looooove). I disagree on the bland, but I'm a crab rangoon addict, and I was pretty disappointed in these. Too much rangoon and not enough crab! I definitely wouldn't get any sushi here, it's way too expensive for a non-sushi exclusive joint. The service is always great, it's always the same guy (owner?), and he's so friendly and nice and adorable, it's hard not to keep coming back! I'm sure most people who frequent or are interested in Rice are from the Rogers Park/Edgewater area, so are familiar with the location, but if not, be warned it's teeny tiny! It's usually not busy so it isn't a problem, but don't go with a gigantic group! Outdoor seating in the summer too, which is nice! And it's right between the New 400 theater and Starbucks, which just seems like a great line up. Cheap dinner, cheap movie, (not cheap) coffee. Perfect date right there! Overall, it's good for Thai food but don't go for the sushi! And come back for the adorable owner!

I thought I'd try out this place awhile back when I was really craving Thai Spice. While trying to avoid spending money, I decided to just head home, but then my car took on a mind of its own and rather than go home, it stopped right beside RTC! I needed a thai fix so badly, I ordered two things: pad thai and fried rice, neither of which was very good. First, I'm not really a fan of the fact that the pad thai was just lump of stir fried rice noodles that looked like angel hair pasta (glass noodles, maybe?) with hardly any sauce and definitely NO SPICE despite me asking for medium heat. The fried rice wasn't quite as bad, and, what can I say, I'm a forgiving person....this my friend is how we solved the equation to get two stars rather than one.

Quick review: Great service. Terrible food. My wife said her taro bubble tea was really just a vanilla shake. The only thing that we enjoyed was the eggrolls.

Although the menu isn't extensive, and their isn't a lot of room inside to sit down and eat with more than a couple of people, this is my favorite Thai restaurant in Rogers Park. A few months back, I think they changed chefs, which caused the quality of the food to go down, but I think they've switched back recently and everything is just as good as it was before. The food is affordable and delicious, and the staff is INCREDIBLE. They are always warm and accomadating.

Sorry I just don't like this place. I ordered the calamari appetizer and it was barely any squid wrapped in a bunch of fried dough. Didn't even taste like calamari. Pad see ew was really bland. Second try = fail. I won't have anything from here again. Fast delivery and friendly while taking my order, but if your food isn't good, I won't be needing either of those things.

I think Thai Rice Cafe deserves a bit of a better rating. I see a lot of complaints about it being "bland" but I can't help but wonder if that's only because of the heavily salted and msg-d asian cuisine that is typical at so many restaurants in Chicago. Rice Thai definitely has a lighter taste than most Thai restaurants I've been to but I don't see it as a bad thing. The thing is, I never leave this restaurant feeling bloated and sleepy like I do after many other thai and chinese meals in the city. The fact is that a lot of places use msg and it makes the food taste a lot saltier. I applaud Rice Thai for not overloading the dishes with salt. I love their food and always have a great and extremely quickly prepared meal when I'm here. Rice Thai is a great place if you want to have a quick meal that is fresh and not over-seasoned. You will leave feeling satisfied and it will not put a hole in your wallet. Far from it. The people that own it are very nice as well. The restaurant is small, with only 4 or 5 tables but has never been crowded when I've gone. Rice Thai gets 4 stars from me only because there is only one thai restaurant that holds a true, special place in my heart but I'm not going to mention it here, out of respect.

Amazing! Best Thai food in Chicago, hands down. If you are impressed by lighting and furniture and go to restaurants because you need to feel wealthy, stick to River North. If you want the best Thai in the US, this is where you need to go. It's a small mom & pop joint where you can see the food being prepared, and there is inside seating for 10-14 people. The Green Curry and Pad Thai are the best in Chi. The limited English but friendly service is AMAZING, particularly compared to the Lawrence area shops where you are treated like dung because your skin is too white. LOVE IT, I Drive there from Ukrainian Village at the drop of a hat... Go, Eat, and you'll go again!!!!

I still love Rice Thai Cafe when I want something quick while I'm at work. I absolutely am in love with their crab rangoon. Also, I have recently tried both the Panang and Massaman curries, and I really love the Massaman which had potatoes and peanuts, and is in a coconut milk based sauce.

Not my first pick for a Thai restaurant in Chicago but if you're looking for some late night takeout within walking distance this is not a bad place to go. Anytime I've ever been to this restaurant the staff has been really inviting, especially the little Thai lady that runs the joint. While I waited for my food she offered me a glass of water and some newspapers to read! That's one of the reasons I like this place. The food is a little bland, I usually just order mixed veggies and rice, I always find myself adding extra spices to liven it up. Tiny interior so not the greatest place for more than a couple people to dine, I'd rather do take out than sit in because of the cramped dining area.

Rice Thai Cafe is like the rest of the Thai places in Rogers Park close to the Loyola Campus: it is reliable, but generally bland. I drop in every once in a while if I am feeling lazy and need to sate my Thai addiction. Their lunch special is a very good deal and their service is usually fast. The owner is usually on premises and is extremely kind and courteous. The restaurant is tiny and not very conducive to groups larger than four, which is highly disappointing. The best way to eat Thai is with a moderate to large group sharing several dishes. It isn't a huge loss, however, given the blandness of their dishes. I have had each of their curry dishes and a few on the entrees. None of them were terrible, but they were always disappointing. They are typically bland and I suspect the cooks skimp on fresh ingredients. You get what you pay for I guess. I suspect Rice Thai is guilty of the same crime as other Thai-Sushi joints: toning down their flavor to cater to the bland American palate. One exception is their tom yum soup. While not the best I have had, it regularly hits the spot. Nowadays it is usually the only thing I order there. If you live in southeast Rogers Park and need a Tom Yum fix, stop at Rice Thai. Theirs is the best within a walkable radius. For entrees, I suggest you head to another neighborhood. *Note: I have not tried the sushi at this place. I tend to shy away from Thai places that offer sushi for obvious reasons.

You have the worst service in all CHICAGO area restaurants. Very rude !

We are so done here. I got to taste the worst tom yum possibly ever made, though I was grateful for the couple shreds of cabbage floating around in 10 oz of warm water. $3.95 There's a similar problem with the noodles dishes I've had. They're a brick of noodles, no veg, little seasoning. $6.95 I think taking out may be part of the problem here. I've never eaten in, and when I finally get someplace to open the container, it's likely not what they'd stick on a plate if they actually had to face the person who intended to enjoy it. Obsequious staff really adds insult to injury.

I love their red curry and their egg rolls. The place is very small, and they remember you and are very friendly.

Rice Thai is a small and friendly, family owned joint that always satisfies. I almost always get the pad see ew, so I don't know much about the tastiness of other dishes, but judging from my favorite, I can bet everything else is wonderful. The prices are very reasonable too. Note: the place is tiny so don't bring a group. Save it for date night or take out.

Great little place for the neighborhood. Just know it is a small 2 person show, but good food at a good price. Personally, I stay away from the sushi, but I love the Tom Yum soup, and all the curries. I feel all the chicken dishes are the best. I call it 5 starts for Rogers Park

This place is super small! It's a hole in the wall between the 400 Theater and Starbucks. But their food is superb (for what you're paying for it-- nearly nothing!) The best experience I ever had here was after a long first day of my internship. The man smiled and greeted me to Rice Thai Cafe (gotta love the name!) He asked if I wanted a glass of water and told me I could sit down and take my time looking over the menu (Even though I was planning on take-out). I chose the pad see ew and waited a mere eight minutes (I was starving since I hadn't eaten all day) and received a warm take out bag with a smiley face on it. I came back to my apartment to a large helping (it could probably feed two people, but I ate it all because it turned out to be delicious!!!!!) Obviously I wouldn't come to this place with a large group. But I definitely would consider it if you're in the Roger's Park neighborhood (it's not really "worth" the trip from another part of the city), low on cash (poor college students unite!), and looking for some good Thai food to stick to your ribs.

A (Very Crappy) Ode to Rice Thai Cafe Little storefront, full of food Menu not expansive but in is good Old lady who's always there friendly as can be The place makes a pretty damn sweet Thai iced tea Nothing there costs all that much cash Call ahead so quickly you can dash Rice Thai you know what you are and that's cool Anyone who badmouths you is a complete fool ...Try the basil fried rice.

The food is good and I think the family running it are sweet. Very friendly and the service is pretty fast. We stop here a lot when going to the 400 theater

I live near this place. This is my go to place for good Thai food. I generally get the park Pad Ti. I love it. Everyone that I bring here gets addicted to this place. The owners are very nice. Everything seems to be made fresh. 3 stars because it's a good solid place but it's there is no wow factor.

I have to agree with a previous reviewer, the food really is Fast Food Thai style. And while the owners are pleasant, they really nickle and dime you to shortness of breath if you ask for anything extra in a to- go order. I requested additional peanuts for my pad thai, got a tiny little container, and they charged me a buck! How daaaaaare they! Good for a fast bite before or after a movie at the trashy next door theater I adore, but beyond that, fogedaboudit.

Been to numerous Thai places, and this is pretty delicious. So far I've had the pepper beef, the spicy chicken and one other thing I cant think of the name right now. Anyway they were very friendly and the place is clean. If you look they have passed all their health inspections. Good enough for me! Will make if my informal go to Thai place when I want something quick.

Not enough experience with them to give much of a review, but their take out was super fast. Unfortunately it also tasted like it was. If left me not really wanting to give them another shot.

This little place is great if you're looking for a relatively cheap, Thai-like meal. I think the previous reviews have it right in saying that the food quality leaves a little to be desired. However, for convenience and price, I go back again and again. My comparison dish is Pad Thai and it's good here, consistently. Not great. Not excellent. But a good, solid choice. Also, for those in the area, the lunch special is worth it--an entree, soup, and choice of several appetizers for 5.95. C'mon. Not bad. The special is eat-in only, though, so make that commitment. Of all the things on the menu, I'd stay away from the sushi. It's roughly the same quality as you'd get in the grocery store. However, I am a fan of the spring roll on the appetizer menu. I do really like the couple that owns the place which is another reason I feel loyalty to it. But for a bite on my way home when I just wanna sit on the couch and eat something I didn't make, Rice is a regular choice for me.

This place is the true definition of a mom and pop joint. run by an older thai couple, everything is cooked to order as they alternate working the register and the kitchen. stick to the thai staples (curry, rice and noodle dishes) and you can't go wrong. my favorite thai place in the city.

    (5)
  • Ryan H.

Great local place. I recommend going for the lunch special- less than 7 bucks for Miso Soup, and appetizer, and an entree. I generally stick to the noodle dishes, and they are all delicious. I prefer the pork Kee Mao, smothered with red chili sauce. Spicy and tasty!

My first meal back in the states after a month in Italy. After only eating pizza, pasta, and panini for a month, some sushi and Thai food sounded alright to me. It hit the spot, but I think that was given the circumstance. The sushi wasn't all that great, but the noodles were pretty good. I'll go back sometime, it's close.

We always had a great time eating here - though it's probably better to get your food delivered or to go, since there isn't a ton of seating available indoors. The owners are very friendly, and our food has always been ready right on time. Some dishes can be hit or miss, but It's a great option for Thai food that's easy on the wallet.

I love this place. Chicken fried rice, Pad woonsen, Basil chicken, egg rolls, pot stickers, and vegi soup = to die for. My friends and I drive 45 minutes to go here now that we don't live close by. When my boyfriend and I get bored of RTC, we will go to blue elephant, but blue elephant's meat is meaty tasting..... if that makes sense? I've tried many thai places, and this one is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!

We LOVE this little place. Maybe it has a lot to do with proximity. They are right around the corner from me. And we always order from them when we have a bunch of people over or when we come home from travelling and are too tired to cook. We were thrilled when they opened about a year and a half... or even two years ago. The food is good! It's not the best thai I've ever had but it's good comfort food. And the owner's are SOOOO NICE! They are so friendly and last night they even let me order take out ten minutes after they closed! So that's why I'm giving them 5 stars. I always order the panang curry and the crunchy roll, but the green curry, mussaman curry, and bubble teas are good too.

Haven't gotten a plethora of items here, but I love their pad see ewe. It's amazing - their fried rice isn't bad either. Can't speak to anything else, but I'll definitely keep coming back.

Rice Thai Cafe doesn't have the worst Thai food in the world, but it's definitely not the best. The food is bland and the maki is overpriced. You're better off going to Grande on Clark.

Friendly neighborhood restaurant. I eat here once sometimes twice a week. The owner always gives me a warm welcome. Every thing on the menu is great. The portions are big , I'm usually eating it the next day. highly recommend. The only reason I gave in four stars is because every now and then I've received a entree that wasn't up to par but it didn't stop me from vising the restaurant again.

It might have just been that I hadn't eaten all day, but this place was awesome. The people are beyond friendly, the restaurant is kind of cramped, but I liked it, and they had these awesome speakers that lit up different colors that now I'm dying to own. EDIT: This is now one of my favorite places in the neighborhood to go. I seriously go here all the time. I love it. They have a pretty good selection, they are always very very friendly. Ack. I can't say enough good things about this place. Try the fried bananas. You won't regret it.

Every time I eat here or order out it is a disappointment. Not only is the food bland but it comes in small portions, but the service is kinda grumpy. They never honor their coupons even thought they don't have an expiration date. Not really worth the walk, call or accident. This is too bad because it could be easily better.

Good food, affordable price. I haven't tried their sushi, but there is Thai in the name and from what I hear Thailand isn't known for their sushi, I'll pass thanks. But for the dishes, very good. I had a basil seafood dish which was spicy and very delicious. I should really order from them again soon.

My boyfriend and I picked up food from here on Saturday night. It was ok, and we definitely would go back again for a fast bite, but I wanted it to be awesome because it's so close to my house and it wasn't, unfortunately. I had pad thai and felt is was lacking flavor. My boyfriend liked his meal a bit better but said the same thing. The appetizers we had were ok, but again, not fantastic. The prices were ok, but not better than any other Thai restaurant in the area. For two meals, a spring roll and some cucumber salad we spent almost $20 - not bad, but not better than other places. It's worth a stop in if you're looking for a quick bite, but don't go looking for this place to tickle your taste buds - it won't.

The friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, and well-priced specials make this one of my neighborhood staples for a quick lunch. Mediocre food keeps it from becoming a true favorite.

I decided to try it again after a year. It's still no better than the last time I had it. The sushi is not as good as I can buy at Whole Foods and they don't even give you real soy sauce with it - you get the packets of imitation. The spring rolls were the worst I have ever had and they are usually my favorite - bland with no color and sauce that has a glue texture. The garlic chicken was ok, definitely not something I would crave to order again. I'm disappointed because now I won't be back.

"Order Please!" This place is exquisite. Located only a few blocks north of Loyola's lakeshore campus, I consider this a must for Roger's Park local food. Not only that, their Pad Thai is so amazing, I find it hard to beat in even ritzier thai restaurants. Although the seating is small and clearly a mom-and-pop's kind of business, it brings all the more charm to it. Amazingly friendly, near by and quick with deliveries, and most importantly delicious thai food for a bargain!

I went back here this weekend after a year break (moved out of and then back to Rogers Park). Prices went up. Though still not that bad, they are on par with any other small Thai place in the city. But the food didn't seem as good. I'm hoping it was because I went so late on Saturday, but I had to caveat my 4 stars from earlier. It's still a good choice when you want Thai at the last minute. And it's a cute place to go eat at. But it certainly isn't the best the city has to offer.

i love this place! ive now been there 3 times in 2 months and im not sure about the previous bad reviews, maybe they changed because everytime ive been there, its so yummy, good clean healthy thai food! we love it and plan to go there from now on!

Went here on a Saturday at the end of a walk, paid 13.02 for pad thai and crab ragoon, The crab ragoon was under-filled, but okay. The pad thai was salty, but again, okay. I really feel I overpaid for just okay food. The weekday lunch special might be a little more reasonable, but my food wasn't great, and I don't like paying so much for blah food.

Come here when you miss having your mom make you a nice warm meal. An older Thai couple, whom King Bhumibol would be proud to call his people, greet and serve you like you're their favorite grandchild. After spending some time in Thailand (yes, look at me, quite the globetrotter), I found you can't get Thai food in the US. Thais know Americans are gluttons and like our food covered in thick, syrupy shit and can't handle spice. Touche, Thai-restaurateurs, this is true. But anyways, Rice Thai does a very good job on traditional, 30-baht-but-my-plate-might-not-be-clean Thai Fried Rice. They also have delicious sticky rice (not too coconuty or hard) and pretty good Basil Chicken. This is not fancy; this reminds me of sketchy, cheap Thai places in Thailand. Or, almost. Go to Chang Mai to get great Thai food. For less hassle, go to Rice Thai for good thai fried rice and a fuzzy feeling inside.

As much as I love Rice Thai and would like to give it four or five stars, their food is simply solid instead of great. The store owners are fairly adorable older Thai couple, but the food is a little sparce. It still commands a lot of my loyalty (the first restaurant I ate at in Chicago) but Blue Elephant or Thai Grill are better alternatives.

Stopped in for some quick Pad See Eew (my usual Thai comparison dish), and it was mediocre at best. Service was very quick, from order to out the door in about 5 minutes, but the ambiance and food quality left a lot to desire. The restaurant itself is very small, only seating for a handful of couples. You would never fit a large group in there. Noise from the kitchen permeates the dining area, giving it the feeling as if they don't want you to stay and be comfortable. This firmly cements the restaurant's role as a takeout joint. Ingredients were fast-food quality, with the Pad See Eew relying solely on soy sauce without any additional spicing. Vegetables were comparable to quick chinese places such as Panda Express, probably frozen. All in all it is great for its speed and if you want something Thai on the go, but never think of the restaurant as more than fast food.

We order from Rice Thai at least once a week. The veggies are always fresh, which we love. We particularly enjoy their ginger chicken and cashew chicken which I always get with tofu as I am vegetarian. I love that they offer brown rice. The service is wonderful, and the prices can't be beat. If you get a chance, try their seasonal sticky rice with mango. Yum!

The guy behind the counter is very friendly, so I gave this place two chances. Both times, the food tasted really off somehow, from the egg rolls to the main dish.

  • Tom T.

This is a decent Thai joint that happens to be right down the block from us. They do best on their noodle and rice dishes; their egg rolls are mediocre, their crab rangoons lacking in filling considering the price, and I'm a bit too wary of sushi from a Thai restaurant to try any here. Their eat-in seating is *way* too cramped in the evenings, which is unfortunate given the nice interior vibe. The staff is always friendly, and my pick-up orders have always been ready on time. I can't say I'd go out of my way to eat here, but as a neighborhood restaurant it serves us well.

    (3)
  • Lauren S.

Good, cheap Thai and Sushi. The fare isn't 5-star exquisite, but they cover all the Thai basics, and everything I've gotten is very tasty :) Only a few tables for dine-in. Definitely hole-in-the-wall ambiance..Blue Elephant, a few blocks south (Devon and Magnolia) gives a lovely presentation if you're looking for a dine-in expierience.

  • Dianna X.

Yuck! This place is gross!!! The sushi is some of the worst sushi I have ever had! Not worth it... go to Grande Noodles instead! I live less than a block from this place and won't ever be back!
