Pro: amazing food, not greasy, best chips & salsa, horchata is tasty, pretty decor, not full (ever), open 24/7, clean Cons: staff is slow, torta is smaller than normal, quiet Recommendation: be ready to order your drink when the waitress drops off the menu or sits you down so the service can be faster.

I'm sorry to say that the food here isn't very good...it's not even "decent." This place is huge but super empty. It almost feels like a ghost town restaurant which is ironic because it's located on a busy street in Chicago. We should've known to leave from that clue. Being weary of the place from the get, I ordered quesadillas (I mean, how can u mess up quesdillas? Lol). But I was wrong. The quesadillas were bland and the cheese was gummy. It came with refried beans and rice..both were incredibly bland. I had to add salt to everything. My dad got steak Tortas and he said the same thing about his food. I'm giving it two stars because the waitress was nice. I would never return here. I'm sorry.

The food here is fantastic. Pleasantly surprised with it being a 24 hour place. The menu is huge and the prices are fair. Portions are huge as well! Unfortunately the service is bad. I've been here a handful of times where I only saw my server once. Every single time they've also never brought our drinks. I usually go at 8 on a Sunday night and it's slow. Still the service is always bad. The food is great though and it's a nice place, hopefully the service will get better.

Great service and the food is always delicious. The combination meals always get you the best bang for your buck. It doesn't fill up too much with people, and has a cool feel despite the occasional emptiness

This is my go to spot for after hours tacos in Logan Square & Avondale. I always get the carne asada tacos to go, and I'm always happy. I wouldn't say they are the best tacos in the city, but to satisfy your late night craving in the neighborhood, they are great.

The menu on Yelp here is outdated. I was craving for Arepas, and my boyfriend craved menudo. Imagine when I showed up and asked the waitress. First off, the place was super empty on a Sunday. There was no music playing. The place looked nice, except for the cake case, which looked dirty. There were no Arepas, and the menu was completely different than the one listed. I ordered the Aztec soup with pork rinds, and what do I get, one piece of it! It tasted sour for some reason...I ordered a Tamal. The pork and tamal were super dry. The entrees on the menu are overpriced. If they can't even make the my Tamal and soup right, I don't know about the entrees... I don't know if I would come back again...

Great place for a quick bite to eat. Full Bar. Food Snobs need not bother to come in. The dishes are tasty. If you want a wait staff coming by every 2 minutes to make sure your experience is just perfect, find someplace else. Good food. Reasonably priced.

I'm indifferent about Puebla. The woman who works late nights during the week is super friendly, however she's the only one. Every other person on the wait staff I've experienced is extremely rude and the service is terrible. Previous reviewers are right, this isn't a place where someone is going to come check on you. Good luck getting a refill (which isn't available for chips and salsa.) Puebla is open 24 hours, and the tacos are good (except for the time I bit into multiple bones in the pollo) but if it's not late at night, you might be better off going somewhere else. Every time I've dined in, I've had a bad experience. Order your food to go, and don't order the nachos.

Best Tacos in hood by far. It's hard to find good corn tortillas and these were on point. Quality steak and fish was apparent. If you're looking for more authentic and less white people tacos, come here.

  • Jonathan A.

This place rules. It's open 24hrs. So your options are limited late night if you want something cheap and fast that is not fast food. It's basically a late night Mexican diner experience. Aside from that, I've only really ordered their tacos, and I think they are pretty good. Better than decent. Just basic taqueria style tacos. It's a pretty big place, and everytime I've been there, it's mostly empty aside from a couple tables. So it's kind of a nice quiet diner atmosphere. And it's cheap and clean and the staff is friendly. I've never had anything resembling a bad experience or bad food here.

Love this place the service is fast n friendly no matter who the waitress is . All dishes r great the flavor is all there ...

  • Jim M.

This place is open 24 hours, and that basically encapsulates the experience. The food is not good, but it is edible enough for a late night, post-bar drunken nosh. But just barely...

    (2)
  • Maja R.

Went here after a movie. The food was extremely bland and not good at all. Service was also lacking- the guy didn't really care that we were there and just went through the motions. Given the quality and taste I thought it was overpriced. Would not recommend.

24 Hour Mexican Food. Does that scream quality to you? Let's hope not. Puebla is good for late night, refried grub when you have a large group that doesn't want to a) cram into La Pasadita, b) fight for booth space at El Taco Veloz or c) do what you probably should and just GO THE FUCK HOME. Their large restaurant lends itself perfectly to spreading out if you need the space. It is rarely, if ever, busy and I understand why. The food ain't great. My enchiladas were sad and sparsely filled and my chicken taco had a bone in it. At this hour of the evening you can imagine this was not the type of bone I was hoping to find. Two stars.

Avoid this place like the plague ... This waitress we have right now is rude, mean and doesn't seem to want to do her job with a smile. We have done nothing to upset her. She practically charged us for the straws and napkins. Worst waitress ever! And no free refills on drinks, no free second round of chips and salsa. Come on ... You have been warned!

  • Ang L.

The tacos are always good. The chips are good. It's open 24 hours. Right near the train. Always consistent. My go to spot. Big establishment. And they are fast. I ordered 3 tacos to go and was walking out in four minutes

    (3)
  • marcella g.

We stop in here from time to time and the food is pretty consistent. We like it. It's decent Mexican food, the staff is friendly - the décor, nothing to write about, but...I recently tried the mole and it's REALLY good. try it and you might leave another star for this place.

  • Jerome T.

I live right by this place for a year now. I have been here only once, but not from lack of trying. I have walked the 3 blocks to this place multiple times only to find it closed... I guess the large sign on the building that says open 24 hours is just a suggestions. Boo to you guys . All I wanted was a taco just one taco. The one time I did eat there it was ok.. Nothing special. Just a normal late night burrito place. Sure they have other food and a full bar( you have yo have some big bucks if your thinking of drinking here... It's like $$$$$a drink..) Just remember that in Mexican restaurant land 24= close at 4:30 am.

This place is gives little portions. Cleanliness as of dishes is not great just okay. Only good if you are drunk. If your sober go to another restaurant

    (1)
  • Lauren H.

3 am and more drunk than I am willing to admit, I stumble into this place. The fact that you can sit at a table and chomp on some chips and salsa while being waited on at this hour is 5 stars alone. I ordered some sort of chicken enchilada combo for like $8, again, awesome. But there was hardly any chicken, mostly cheese. Even as a girl, who when sober, LOVES cheese, my drunk self thought, "damn, this is too much. Where da chicken at?" Beef it up, y'all. You can't pull a fast one on this lush.

    (3)
  • Monica R.

Both the chicken quesadillas and plain cheese quesadillas were incredibly tasty (plenty of chicken and PLENTY of cheese). The price was reasonable, not the best I've seen, but you can definitely get a full meal for two for $25. Only thing that I wasn't super keen on, was the promptness of the wait staff. I felt like we spent a ton of time just waiting and waiting to be helped and the wait staff tended to be nowhere in sight.

    (3)
  • Daniel M.

Pros: * It's your only realistic 24-hour option in the area. * Chips and salsa are far better than other Mexican places' in the area. * The food is good and you get a lot for what you pay. * Huge dining area; always ample room. Cons: * If you order something twice you might get two totally different things; they seem to chance the recipes all the time, so you never know what you're going to get. * Some of the waitstaff do not speak fluent English, to the point that it can become a problem when ordering. Notes: * The tacos aren't listed on the main menu for some weird reason, so if you want tacos you have to request the "to go" menu, which has the tacos on it. (You can still order the tacos for dine-in, though.)

    (4)
  • Christina E.

Food is ok but service is bad it wasnt a busy day and it took them forever to get our drinks and our appetizer and everytime I aske her about it she had a grin on her face so not the best place to go if you want good service

    (1)
  • Emily C.

It's 24-hours and within stumbling distance from my apartment. I either order burrito suizo with chorizo or quesadillas with chorizo, so around $10. I stick to these because I like them both and judging from the other reviews, I could find myself with some serious shits if I venture out. The margaritas are satisfying if you feel like paying for them. They will not serve you booze after 2am. This place has been empty every time I've gone, which is fine with me, because I'm not down with everyone else's 1am drunk chatter drowning out my own. When I get takeout I usually can't even finish a cigarette before it's ready, but I've had nights where I've waited 15 extra minutes while a waitress learned how to use the credit card machine. So it goes. Don't go here expecting ground-breaking Hispanic cuisine. It's after 9 and you're too drunk and you need FOOD in your STOMACH so stop bitching about how "dry" and "overcooked" everything is. If you're in that much of a hurry, McDonald's is across the street. Otherwise, chill the fuck out and enjoy some chips and salsa.

I came in late at night with a friend of mine. Admittingly we were a bit inebriated from tonight's activities. For you see we were having an anti-Valentines day, so we decided to skip the fine decadence and went all out to avoid the fancy and go for the "not fancy" I'm not saying Puebla Restaurant is not fancy, it has a colorful decor and welcoming tone. It's a place to bring the family around or a place to bring your friends. I just won't call it "romantic" which was our goal anyway. I do remember the waitress giving us a weird look when we ordered a single chimichanga and a single medium margarita. I never understood how our drink cost more than our dinner. But in either case we enjoyed every bite of it.

We had a dinner last saturday with my family. The food is ok, so is the service. This is the right place if you are looking for a family enviroment. I didn't have any drink, but I will next time. Rumor has it that "this place is the king of the Margaritas".

If you're in Logan Square after midnight and hungry for a solid Mexican meal, Puebla is the place to go. From their taco dinner to the enchiladas verde, their dishes are a great portion and always come out piping hot. Their margaritas are tasty and goes great with dinner. The ambiance isn't always calm and collected- if you dine in, it can get crowded and the music can be loud. But if you can get past that, you've got an awesome spot to hit with friends after a night out.

ok this is our favorite family style mexican restuarant in the city and believe me we have been to many. The reason for only four out of five stars is not every entree on the menu is top notch. Just like any place they have what they are good at and what leaves room for improvement. Steer clear of the seafood and the mole sauce dishes and you should be A OK. Everything else is GREAT and their MARGARITTAS are dangerously delicious and huge for the price. It is very family friendly but can also be a good party place. We even had a huge party there and booked their party room and it was pretty inexpensive for all the food and drinks we had. The family that owns it is so nice and accommodating. You have to try their pico de gallo, margaritas, and enchiladas

Decided to check out Puebla for a quick dinner before a movie at the Logan. It was 6ish on a weekday and the place was empty. And this is a huge place to be empty. I can't imagine what their rent is. The service was friendly and attentive but I swear we had at least 4 different servers during the course of our dinner. I don't know if they have some sort of rotating system in place but it was a little strange to be sat by one waitress, have another one bring us menus and waters, yet another one take our order, yet ANOTHER one bring out our food, etc. The food was decent for the price. I had the chile relleno tostada combo which I'm not sure I would order again (tostadas were far more awkward to eat than i had expected and the chile relleno didn't have a lot of flavor) but would certainly consider coming back to try the enchiladas which looked really good. It's a good place to get a decent meal at a decent price but I wouldn't go out of my way for Puebla. However since it's in the hood I will probably be back.

This is a fairly decent 24 hour spot. I'm a bit of a Mexican food snob so I deducted a couple stars cause I'm not a fan of their burrito's or the mole poblano. The place is a bit overpriced for what it is. If you go on Wednesday's the sope's are usually fresh and very tasty. Also they make a decent torta de jamon and queso fundido. Oh yea, stiff margaritas! yee!

I must be a masochist because I keep going to this place again and again despite the punishment. The only reason, really, is that it's basically right next door to the Logan Theater. And the way I'll say it is that you want to go here after a movie at the Logan Theater and not before it. I have never seen a place that doesn't cater to anyone in a hurry. If you tell them you're in a hurry, apparently they hear this as, "keep filling my water, but please, never, ever bring the check." I've been there numerous times and I swear that once, when it got to be 5 minutes before the movie I was going to see (I had arrived a good 45 minutes before showtime), I walked up to the counter, slammed down a solid bill, and walked out the door. They've let me back in so that's something, I guess. And the sad thing is, the food's not even worth the aggrevation. They have decent chili rellenos but everything else on the menu is just disgusting. I've never had such dry rice in my life. It's cheap enough. The specials being $7.95 work out to pretty much an even $10. Well, an even $8 if you're not as generous with tipping bad service as I am. I think the staff is usually more interested in chatting behind the bar and watching the White Sox games showing on the giant televisions than admitting there are customers. So will I be back? Yeah, probably. The next time I don't feel like making dinner before a movie at the Logan Theater.

My friend and I went here when we couldn't decide where else to go and wanted a new place. He claims they have the best Mole he's had. I refuse to try it because I don't care for Mole. Then again, apparently I happen to try it at some of the worst places, according to him. Regardless, the food is reasonable and the salsa verde is quite good (though you usually have to ask for it) and I love the little spoons for the salsa! I always get the same thing (tacos) and drench them in salsa because I'm on a taco/salsa kick, but I'm never let down here. I finally decided to mix it up with a burrito and was jealous when my vegetarian friend got his with avocado and it looked better, but that's ok. I saved the other half of mine and rubbed it in his face later when he was hungry and without food. Word to the wise: do not get the large margarita. In fact, you could probably avoid the medium as well. My friend and I came in on NYE after 2 bottles of wine because we knew we needed food if we were going to make it to a party.........but of course being we decided it was a good idea to order a margarita too. We thought a large would be sufficient for the two of us. IT WAS GIGANTIC. We drank about half of it before we decided it was too much. Seriously, a small is sufficient. The strawberry was quite tasty.....I'm normally a mango fan at the Cid, but I definitely prefer their strawberry. The best thing about this place is that it's 24-hours.

FIRST of all it's not "la" puebla, it's simply "puebla"... pretty sure anyway... not sure how yelp got that one so confused :/ My boyfriend and I wandered by this place that is about 2 minutes away from our crib, and it was 11pm and I saw someone drinking a big ole' marg and it just felt right. For being late on a Saturday it was somewhat busy, and then I learned that it was 24-hours which made me happy for my future drunken nights. I got a "small" margarita which was delicious and just the right size (although I could have easily enjoyed a few more). They weren't too sweet which is REFRESHING but definitely not strong enough (never are, though.) My boyfriend got this sampler-platter of sorts which, from the "few" bites that I had was quite tasty; the tamale was especially good. Oh yeah, and their sauce/salsa was delicious and spicy; I do believe my boyfriend started sweating. Good!

I love this place. It's simple, it's clean, it's tasty, it's cheap, and it's open all day everyday. There's nothing surprising about the menu and that's why it's awesome. If you want a bomb ass wet burrito they got it and it'll taste bomb ass every single time, I promise. Also for the vegetarians this might be the only place that makes vegetarians refried beans and vegetarian rice, for real! What service. Not to mention that the staff is really sweet and did I mention is cheap, good and open all night? I say hell yes to Puebla.

Puebla is a Godsend at 3:00am and you've been out boozing it up. It's maybe not the best at 6:30pm when you're totally sober but excellent when you need something to sop up some of that alcohol. Everyone has their favorite thing at any given Mexican joint and my favorite item at Puebla is the veggie burrito. I think they do such a good job with the fresh ingredients. I just love it! My sister swears by the Chiles Rellenos and now that she lives in the suburbs she's been known to call in an order for take out when she heads back home after a visit. I also love their cheese enchiladas but I only get them take out because the cheese is frequently not fully melted and that way I can heat them up a bit. Be careful with the salsa!! Sometimes it's mild and flavorful and sometimes it's hot, hot, hot, and spicy! it seems to depend on how old the salsa is. I one time made the mistake of getting my cheese enchiladas after some serious afternoon boozing at the Maproom. I picked them up as I stumbled home and when I got back I poured that salsa over the whole thing. After about three bites (Um, apparently my taste-buds were drunk too and the spiciness didn't really hit me.) my stomach was in extreme pain! Thank goodness I had a roommate at the time and she set me straight after some soothing chamomile tea. It's a pain I'll never forget. You are warned.

My fellow reviewers made me laugh reading the reviews for Puebla. It seems to be either they hate it because of silly incidentals like charging a gazillion dollars for a side of whatever or the waitress taking forever to bring the check, or they love it because it's one of the last bastions of rock-around-the-clock eating in a gentrifying neighborhood. Every time I go to Logan's Square on a Friday or Saturday night, it seems no one cooks--the restaurants are filled and bustling with activity...long waits, iffy service and pricey dining (yes, Lula's, that would be you). So whenever one of my Logan's Square friends dangles the "let's go to my fave funky dive restaurant and have dinner" carrot in front of me to beckon me from my downtown igloo, I usually say, "um...no. I'm doing my hair...I know, I'm boring." I'll then go out to one of the downtown/Mich Ave chain restaurants and eat my boring food but not complain because I'm waiting with nicely mannered Iowan tourists rather than gaggles of 30 year-olds living in a gentrifying neighborhood. But...this Sunday morning I decided to show Mother Nature that I am intrepid even in 4-inch snow, met my friend at Puebla, and was treated to a nice, pleasant chimichanga meal with a side Taco. Served within 5 minutes, hot, yummy and not too expensive. Remember, I'm from downtown which means I'm used to jacked up prices and being charged a gazillion dollars for sides. Our waitress was nice, the menu extensive and I appreciated that the 5-6 families in there were all Latino.

I'm a local and have made Puebla my go to burrito joint. They can make a solid vegetarian burrito and will put the guac on the side for you if you ask. The chips and salsa are TO DIE FOR. I always get two orders for my boyfriend and I when carrying out and they never last the night. Only reason I gave 4 stars and not 5 was I had a bad service experience once, and on two occasions they left the guac out of my burrito. As a vegetarian, the guac is what separates one burrito from the next. Anyone can put rice, beans, lettuce, sour cream and cheese in a tortilla and grill it up. Will continue to come in!

It's pretty difficult to beat a Mexican restaurant that's open 24-hours a day every day of the year!!! Puebla Restaurant is generally a good place to have on your list of options in Logan Square, particularly late-night. I have definitely had better Mexican but the food is still quite good and the margaritas are tasty. Beer is also very inexpensive. I drop in occasionally for the Juevos Rancheros which are really just fried eggs on a tortilla with salsa and cheese. It's always delicious and works as a cheap late-night or morning dish. I have also tried the fajitas which I can recommend although I would avoid the shrimp which are too small. As far as location goes, it's next door to the $4 movie theater and a block from the Blue Line L stop and bus station.

Really good food. I had to stand there what like felt forever, had to be close to five mins, the two servers kept walking past me, didnt even say hello, place wasnt busy, i guess clearing off plates that were already cleared from the tables is more important then greeting a customer. I was one more pass from just walking out, and if i wasnt hungry and had time to go somewhere else i probably would have. I cant say i wont be back, but not for the food or service, the only reason is convenience.

Ahhh..Puebla. I've had many a drunk visits here. I'm sure the waiters/waitresses here have all seen me at my finest. The food is just OKAY..but I really come here because there's nothing else open at 4 am and my tummy's rumbling. Go for the quesadillas and lots of their hot salsa and double the rice. Get the horchata too-you won't be sorry. They do spanish karaoke on Friday/Saturday nights, and I've even found myself belting out a couple songs while I've had liquid courage. This place is a blast. Margaritas don't suck either.

  • ROSIE V.

I was impressed when I walked in but very disappointed with the food and margaritas. They serve food the way THEY want. My mom had been there before and told me that they overcooked her steak. She thought it was because she didn't specify how she wanted it cooked (nor did the server ask). So when we ordered, we made sure to indicate how we wanted our food cooked ---- Whatever! My mom and aunt ordered the Red Snapper - Both Overcooked. My husband ordered the Steak Dinner - Overcooked. I ordered the Cielo, Mar, y Tierra (Shrimp/Chicken/Beef) --- Everything was --- Overcooked. We won't be back.

Oh, Puebla. You're there for me when I'm drunk and already in the 'hood. But why must you give me such intestinal distress the next day?! Also, they're weird about getting booze right before closing. Came in at 1:30am, and dude would get us margaritas, but they had to be off the table at 2am on the dot. What the... ? Last time I checked, a regular bar gives last call and then turns the lights on at 2 -- the drinks aren't whisked out of your hand and you're kicked in the pants or anything. Maybe they've had trouble with the law? Who knows. Normally when I'm out though my go-to spot is Arturo's. Mmm...

My experience with the service was pretty similar to other posters - trouble getting their attention, lukewarm reception, etc. I really feel compelled to talk about the food, and I have to say I had the worst tamales of my life here. I got a tamale plate with one red sauce and pork tamale, and one green sauce and chicken. The first thing I noticed when they put the plate down was that the closest thing to a vegetable was TWO peas, mixed in with the rice. Everything was beige and tasteless and lacking in texture. The tamales were thick and dry and hard. The corn part was mealy and gritty, and the meats in both were so tough that they were inedible. I couldn't eat them. I made a meal out of the chips and beans and awful pico de gallo (tasted like it was from a jar) and left. Never again, man.

Eww...Don't do it! I just got back from my very first visit at this place. Here is the summary... *The sign when you first enter says "Please wait to be seated" so we waited and waited and waited until finally a lady behind the bar noticed us and waved us over. *The service is terrible. *The steak is gross, chewy, and fatty. *The rice was bland and nothing special. *It took 10 minutes to get napkins and a refill on salsa. *They never refilled my drink or even offered. *The service is terrible. *The place was empty (should have been my first sign of the bad experience I was about to have). I say go down to El Cid. Delicious and great service. Try the chorizo burrito...mmm. If I wasn't sick from what I just ate at Puebla I would go there right now to have a real meal at the same price.

  • Kari J.

I might be their best customer. I go at least twice a week. I always have the same server, and she knows my order by heart. A word to those who haven't quite figured it out: they will not bring the check to your table proactively ... I have heard that it's considered rude, as a cultural standard. I go to the register to pay and have had no problem receiving my check in short order. I personally enjoy that Puebla's fajita veggies are not cooked until they resemble dead, gray slop like those at El Cid. I also like that they have salsa on the table so hot that it makes my nose run. Just never had much luck with El Cid, even though I know it's a hipster delight. Try Puebla if you want tasty, fresh food.

  • Gamaliel E.

From the other reviews it appears most hit this place up late at night after a few drinks...that might be a good reason for the high ratings. The place is pretty larger, but I've yet to see more than a few tables filled. Things that I have ordered....steak tacos.....menudo....steak burrito dinner. All of which were nothing special. The one thing I do recall was that my steak burrito was just over $10 with a soda....since i was worried if i would meet the $10 minimum with my debit card. A bit pricey if you ask me. If anyone watches Kitchen Nightmares....you know you don't raise prices when your business is slow..only deters the people already going. One reason why I'm not going back. Oh yeah...the food wasn't anything special.

I don't even want to give this place a star. I will always remember Puebla, but not for good reasons. When my family and I first came to Chicago, we first ate here. We were starving and were so excited to be in Chicago, we even went Mexican. At the suggestion of a family friend, we went here. The place was colorful, I think there was a fountain. No one was there. (First clue to shittiness) We all ordered something different, my brother only got a burger. The food comes and we start eating. The meat was slightly off. I can't explain it. The dish wasn't terrible but the meat was funny. My mother didn't like her food. She makes that very clear to the waitress. We all go home and we all feel sick. Every single one of us puked. What are the odds? We will never step foot in there again. The food was disgusting. Don't ever go there. It scarred me so much that I hesitate to eat Mexican food. I'm JUST starting to get over this and it was almost 3 years.

A friend suggested it, so we stopped there late one Saturday night. I've lived in the neighborhood for a few years and never checked it out, so I was excited to try out a new late night joint. The Ups: Karaoke, in mostly Spanish. The parties gathered there also seemed to be totally into it, so it made it more fun and made the 15+ minutes it took for anyone to come over and help us a little more entertaining. (I am not exaggerating about the time either. I work in the service industry). The location. Easy by bike, and not so far from the Logan Square Blue Line stop. The Downs: ...Basically everything else. It took a really long time to be greeted. Despite being only semi-busy, our food took a long time and when it did come out, 1 out of the 3 of us had to wait an additional 10 minutes to get their meal. Actually, my friend had eaten about 1/3 of my food before the server came over with the other dish. I know this can happen, but if you're the server, at least acknowledge it. Tell the table what's going on. The food itself was completely disgusting. I ordered shrimp fajitas and the shrimp tasted funny, like it had been marinated in butter and left to sit out for way too long before being cooked. My friend also ordered fajitas, but they only give you enough for one order and they don't come back so you might as well forget it. For $13.95, i could have gotten some amazing burrito at El Cid. The final straw though in this experience, was that at the end of the meal I noticed what looked like a cockroach on the table. A closer look, and I was right. My friend cornered the roach under a water glass and, completely disgusted, I walked over to the waiter to explain our new guest. At first I thought he was just not hearing what I was saying, but then he seemed to be argumentive until I explained in Spanish, loudly, that we needed a manager at the table. He came over to check the bug out and said "There is no cockroach." Funny, cause I'm pretty sure it's right in front of you. Then I asked for the manager again. She came over and said that "We never have bugs and this is a clean establishment." Sorry lady, but the evidence would seem to be eyeing up my leftovers from the inside of a water glass. After a lot of arguing, the manager offered to comp our bill. The waiter came over to ask what she decided on and rolled his eyes. We still left a $10 tip, and I honestly, couldn't tell you why. Never going there again.

As many of us Chicagoans know, Mexican food is just about the only type of food you can buy late at night. So where do you go that's a a nice, clean sit-down restaurant that is classier than the standard taqueria with drunken patrons? Puebla Restaurant! I like this place so much that I came here three times in two weeks. The first time, my friend introduced three of us to this place, the second time I came with four other people, and the third time, I was with a group of 14 people! And each time the spacious, clean, and vividly colored and table-clothed restaurant could accommodate us. The tortas here are excellent - served on thinner bread than I'm used to from other taquerias - and can best be described as Mexican-style paninis that retain the flavor of the meat, guacamole, and other toppings you request. The torta is also served with a generous helping of fresh, refried red beans and Mexican rice. The portions are huge and as expected, are more expensive than a standard taqueria. The menu also includes items I'm not used to seeing such as an array of seafood and sopes. However, I'd stay away from the sopes because they're the equivalent of a hard corn meal english muffin, topped with meat and vegetables, and are therefore quite messy. The restaurant also serves delicious horchata (order the large), sangria soda, and margaritas. They also have an enticing dessert case that I will have to try next time. In conclusion, this is the best place to go in Chicago late at night for a nice sit-down dinner!

Awesome 24 hours Mexican joint. Strawberry margaritas were huge. Guacamole was fresh and came in huge portions. I don't remember much as I crawled in here after a long night of drinking. Wait staff was cool. I just love the fact that its 24 hours!

Well, the best thing about it is clearly that it's open all night. It's authentic... if you like that, you'll like it. Closes the kitchen between 5 and 6am, apparently. The meat I've had there, chicken and steak, came off a bit bland... but that's what you get. Covered in juices as well, makes it messy. The large margarita is MASSIVE but really good. They charge for chips if you order take-out, which is a bit strange. Also, clientele in the middle of the night is just very fun, like any drunk-food locale. The decor is beautiful, it seems like they really try with the place to keep it maintained.

This place holds a special place in my heart because it was the first place we ate at after moving from Florida to Chicago. It's also the closest restaurant to my house, open 24 hours and the decor looks like a fabulous pinata threw up, which is all very nice But despite all the perks, this place pretty much blows. The food is decent (there's much better Mexican in Logan), but it is so not worth the service. If you do get the hankering for Puebla, follow these few tips and you actually might enjoy it: 1. Make sure you have at least an hour for the experience. 2. Ask for drink and salsa refills well in advance. 3. Be aggressive with the check. As soon as you get that puppy, take it up to the cash register at the bar. Your waitress won't be back any time soon to pick it up.

I thought the steak tacos I had on my first visit were quite good, well-cooked and with pleasing flavor. However, I was extremely disappointed with my shrimp fajitas upon my first visit: the peppers and onions were greasy, bordering on slimy, and with very few shrimp (and their flavor was marginal, really). I don't know if the discrepancy can be attributed to me getting too ambitious with my order the second time, or my moderate degree of intoxication the first time, so I'm splitting the difference with a three-star rating. I would probably be able to settle this if I returned, but I wouldn't count on that happening.

A friend and I were starving after we went here for a movie, so we headed to Puebla, mostly because I loved their sign. My friend is vegan, so we took a chance coming here. You can't order a burrito on its own, so we both ended up ordering the vegetarian burrito dinner. The dinner comes with rice which had a really strange aftertaste and may have been cooked in chicken stock or something and the beans simply LOOKED too meaty for me to deal with, so I took them (along with the other half of the burrito) home to the human vacuum cleaner. Alison had made it very clear that she didn't want any cheese or sour cream, but when the plate came out, there was a pile of cheese on the beans and our waiter (who was very nice) said, "Cheese on the beans is okay, yes?" Sigh. The burrito itself was pretty good, but the guacamole in it seemed like it'd been sitting out all day. You know why I love Tecalitlan the most? Because they are OUT of guacamole sometimes because they make it fresh. Yes, it sucks because once in awhile they don't have any, but it's good to know you're getting guac that has not been sitting out all day and is starting to brown. I'm not sure that I'd go back to Puebla, but I am very intrigued by this karaoke night...also, the margaritas seemed very tempting.

Pretty standard crappy mid-western mexican food disappointment here...lets just say they have a diarrhea salesman knocking at your door with each order.

Wonderful food and the starting/ending point of many waay too late night misadventures for me. I adore the karaoke nights, even if my espanol is muy mal. Great service at the bar, tacos are made just right(steak, onion, cilantro). Great margaritas, but stick to it on the rocks, the blended are a waste of coin(read:mostly ice). Great tequila selection, clean restrooms and the prices aren't as high as some say.

I ordered the combo plate with enchilada, tamale, and taco. All were not very good, but the tamale was horrible. The meat was very strange tasting. I wondered if it was some strange foreign meat. I didn't think the food had much spice or flavor to it. The salsa tastes like tomato paste, and the beans and rice were very bland. I also didn't think it was super authentic. I wouldn't go here.

One of my favourite late-night restaurants, especially in Logan Square. It's high-quality, tasty food and it's presented well. The staff tends to be pretty friendly (though I've noticed a significant difference in service when I come in with a fellow honky girlfriend and when I come in with Boyfriend, who happens to be Latino and speaks fluent Spanish). The margaritas are killer. Two people to a pitcher over lunch = a heavy afternoon nap. For those saying the food is "okay" - be adventurous! Try something besides a burrito or quesadilla - the seafood menu, for example, is awesome! It may seem a little pricey for relatively standard Mexican fare, but the service, environment, and quality of ingredients warrant it.

Mexican food isn't exactly hard to come by in Logan Square, however Puebla is probably the most bang for your buck. Whether I order the al pastor gorditas or their mole suizo, I'm happy every time. Not to mention they make a damn good burrito. That being said, if you just wanted to sit and sip margarritas and relax at their full service tequila bar you'd be well taken care of too. $22 for a pitcher of mango margarritas works for me. All in all, I'd say try the place out.

It's not the best Mexican food I've ever had (and far from the worst) but goddamn when it's well past the witching hour and I need tacos and I need tacos NOW, this is the place for me. Also great for visiting for a margarita pitcher on a late Sunday evening with a friend because you could spend a solid 3 hours here perched in one of the raised booths and no one will bother you. Why? THEY NEVER CLOSE! How do you do it Puebla?

    (4)
  • Kevin J.

I made my way to to check out some tacos. I have to visit every taco joint within walking distance. I noted Puebla is 24/7 which is always important. You never know when you need to eat at 4am. The steak tacos came Mexican style. I thought the onions were a little excessive but the meat was seasoned so well. That meat could be a dish just by itself. And it will have me visiting Puebla again.

The food here is pretty good for what it is; a tiny step above a hole in the wall. It sure kicks the butt out of El Cid down the street in my opinion! The mole is actually pretty darn good! The salsa and chips are tasty. The margaritas are reasonably priced and you can get them in sizes small, medium, or large or even better - in pitchers. The restaurant is huge (and usually pretty empty) so it's great for a group. The service can be crappy, but it is what it is. And it's open really late - 5am! I honestly have only been here for a late-ish dinner and margaritas a couple times so I can't really comment on the state of this place late at night, but I guarantee the next time I have late night munchies, I will be returning!

The food is delicious. I used to live right behind this restaurant and loved going there late at night to get their giant burritos or gargantuan margheritas. The margheritas are delicious and filling. They used to have karaoke on certain nights, but last time I checked they no longer do, which is a shame because they had a good selection of music in Spanish and English. Puebla is so good, even the staff from El Cid from across the street stops in for the food. The wait staff is friendly, but extremely slow. Go to Puebla if you are not in a hurry. This restaurant is definitely laid back, so have a few giant drinks and enjoy yourself because it takes quite a long time to get the bill. Even now that I live several neighborhoods away I still like to travel to Logan Square to visit Puebla now and then.

Puebla is by far a mediocre Mexican Restaurant and an insult to mexican food and its delicious ways of life. I have been here only 2wice and both times it was horrible expieriences and the only reason I am giving it 2 stars instead of 1 is because there margaritas are good but they do expect you to drink it and be done with any alchoholic beverage by 2am which makes no sense at all. If your looking for late-night mexican food then hit up Los Comales further down Milwaukee in front of Congress Theatre!!

el cheque por favor! Yes I have had to wait for service in this establishment, but after spending alot of time in Mexico and S.A. it seems customary to have to ask for the check. Someone once explained to me that it is an insult to rush people out. I live in Logan Square and have found better tamales (listen for the right cart in the evenings) but the margarita's are to die for here (strong and cheap) and the Kareoke to boot is the best entertainment for miles. I had my birthday party here last year and the bill was $300 for 15 ppl and everyone left tipsy.

Went there for the first time with a friend to escape the crowd at another bar. We ordered a margarita party pitcher and watched old dudes croon all night. I've gone back several times and have observed the same service as Craig. I wouldn't accuse the wait staff of racism, but they may be shy around non-Spanish speakers. Just be assertive and go to the cashier to ask for your check and you'll do fine. Other than that, the food is pretty great. I prefer the tortas, but they're known more around the neighborhood for burritos. The combination plates are always good.

Ok lost three stars becasue I have had only one good experience here out of the three times I went here...food is really not that good.

Try the Gordita's (they are not like like the ones at Taco Bell). The table salsa here is the puree'd liquidy version (as opposed to the dryer chucnky pico de gallo at el cid down the street) and it is HOT. On the whole I like the food a tad bit better than el cid (although not much separates them). Margaritas are bigger than you expect, so watch out when you order. This place is superior to El Cid in that it is open 24 hours. So you have the potential to post afterhours drink here while catching breakfast/dinner and the sun rises. Service is pretty good for a late night hangout. They have very late night karaoke going on here too. Don't ask me whats that about. A fun 24 hour neighborhood place. Love it.

fantastic huge margaritas, some of the food is ok, some of it is pretty meh. the hours are great. good to go to if you're in the area - but i wouldnt go crazy out of my way to get here.

i don't know what it is about this place, but i have never fallen in love with it. sure, it is 24 hours and right around the corner, but the food has always only been mediocre and the price a bit too high. their large margaritas are bigger than your head though, which of course is a plus..

Well, this is one of the only 24 hours in my area of Logan that I am aware of and it does satisfy! I like the nachos, the huevos devorciados, the horchata, well pretty much everything I have had from there is pretty good. The huevos devorciados is effing awesome though, for real. I do feel that it is overpriced, but I guess there is extra overhead and other such expenses when it is 24 hour.

If you're expecting a Mexican hole in the wall where you can eat just one taco and a beer for 2.00, this is not the place for you. Puebla is a little gem in Logan Square. It's spacious, comfy and the food is very tasty and presentable. Not quite a dive but not a 3 star restaurant either. I love it. I always go there at nighttime and I see the same lovely waitress who knows me personally and hooks me up with the strong Margaritas. Saturday nights is their karaoke night and it's fun being drunk and talking shit about people going up there. And just so you know, my tone deaf self has been brave enough to sing myself on a few occasions :D Such a great place to relax and have a good time at a decent price. May it never change.

Can you give a place zero stars? This food is disgusting. Live right around the corner, so I was excited to have a 24-hour Mexican joint close by. I'll drive to Arturo's any day over the proximity of this place. Yuck.

I usually go here late night after drinking, love it that I have a '24 hour' Mexican food place right by my house. The food is good, not spectacular, but good. I love the horchata here, not sure what is different, but it is delicious. My friends from out of town always want to go back when they are visiting. When I ordering carry out the food is ready so fast, it is great.

I had the pleasure of dining at this little gem not once, but twice, this past weekend (yes, the late night drinking got the best of me). I'll be honest night one is a bit of a blur. However, when I woke up in the morning with 1/2 of a chicken burrito in the fridge I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was...even cold. Fortunately, night two turned out much better. We arrived around 11:30pm and I was surprised at the amount of people in the restaurant. Note: Puebla is open 24 hours - A major plus! There was karaoke going on, a full dance floor, and even a few members of the under 5 crowd spending some quality time with the parents. I had the guacamole and chips and my friends had the chicken burrito and tamales. The food arrived fairly quickly and our waitress was very attentive throughout the meal. Everything we had was excellent. I was very relieved to find that the meat was of high quality. Nothing sketchy going on here. If you're looking for authentic mexican this is a great place to visit.

Yuck! Overpriced and not very good food. Sure, it's got a "nicer" atmospher than a taqueria, but it's really not worth it, unless you're getting drinks only.

This is by far my favorite Mexican restaurant in Logan Square. Great food, try the mole, the margaritas are great!!! The best is when they have karaoke! It's a great place for great drinks and good times. Wait staff is super friendly (I am a Spanish speaker...so I never noticed the non-friendliness some reviewers here speak of).

The tacos are adequate. The orchata is a little watered down and on top of that they ALWAYS add ice unless u remind them 3 or more times not too. But they are 24-7 and i love places that are always open. They are alwas havin some kind of party and it is very large. I love the decor and the karaoke nights seem fun (never participated myself, plan to though)

This place costs a bit more than most of the Mexican restaurants in the area, but the food is really good and the waitress was really sweet. The inside is huge and it would be a great place for group dining.

  • Serena L.

Ughhhhhh.... Sometimes I think I just want Mexican food, even if it's horrendously bad. That will never be true again. Their food was passable as leftovers, but I wouldn't choose it again. The service was awful--a Sunday evening, sparsely populated, and I wanted a quick-ish, easy bite. They never refilled our child-sized water cups (despite our asking a couple of times), they hated the fact that my sister had just eaten before meeting me and so only wanted juice, and they acted like we were taking too much of their clearly not-in-demand time to take our money when they rang us up. SKIP IT.

I have a really big problem with this place and i feel gouged whenever i eat here ( which is too often) They charge $1.25 for extra cheese ( NOT 75cents)- and i'm not talking about a whole little thing of cheese, but more like a few springles. The sign outside always says tacoes are $1.25 but they are NOT. The service is always very very poor, their margaritas are not strong enough, and you can order anything you want. I've tried to order a single taco, with a side and a beer- probably a $7 dollar total, and the waiter said "NO" I had to order 3 tacoes. Which i think is total bullshit. I really hate the waiters here, the waitresses are nice. If you have to get tacoes at 4 am, Avoid the waiters!

Good food, awkward environment, slow service. Best chips and salsa in the hood. The room is usually silent unless you feed the jukebox. The room is too bright.

    (3)
  • Teresa G.

This was so-so. The portions were very generous (easily enough for two meals), but the food just didn't excite me that much. To me, salsa is always a key factor in determining whether or not I will be back to a Mexican restaurant, and in this case it fell short.

  • David D.

I love this place. The service is so great. There is this one waitress who always remembers what I want and will chat. Probably because I only get one thing; enchiladas poblanas. This place has the BEST mole sauce I've ever had. And it's 24 hours?!? The karaoke is usually great too. A little overpriced, but the mole is so damn good.....GET THE MOLE.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
