Popeye didn't get his strength from scarfing spinach but from eating Fried Chicken. That's why this chicken chain is named Popeyes. Well... it's not hard to fathom crispy, juicy, seasoned, and lil greasy fried chicken (from any source) being a boot in the ass to: take charge, muster gumption for standing up to a bully, impress a spinster, repair a boat, lift a jalopy, tackle your Netflix queue. Whatever. I don't know your life. But I do think occasionally fried chicken hits the spot and this place makes it. We ordered a bunch of stuff. The chicken we chose was the spicy and I felt wasn't that spicy and a bit salty. I'm not crazy about spicy stuff or salty - but do eat a lot of salty food so the fact I'm saying it wasn't that spicy and is salty is notable. Everyone goes nuts over the red beans and rice and I thought it was ...OK. I could taste artificial smoke which might be the appeal for others. The biscuits are good because they have a butter flavor to the tops. I mean no one could accuse the food of being bland. Obviously, the food is affordable especially with the coupons and specials which we took advantage of. And it's fast. The service was affable. It is what it is and that's all that it. It's Popeyes chicken, Man.

So the reality is, I probably shouldn't be eating fried chicken strips - but occasionally the taste strikes - and some spicy chicken strips from Popeye's are pretty darn delicious. . . . BUT, my experience here makes me not want to visit again. So alas, here is the story: A place is only as good as it's people, right? In the case of this particular Popeye's the employees are not good at all. In fact, their lack of giving any is probably running the place into the ground. Apparently, based on the other Yelp reviews - their manager probably is just as bad, and hasn't tried to turn the place around. So, I drive over to Popeye's and go through the drive through - there is a car in front of me ordering (or so I thought) and a car you can see up at the window. 10 minutes passes and the car in front of me hasn't ordered yet... finally, they get to order! Yay, my car moves. I wait another 4-5 minutes to be acknowledged and it wasn't a sorry for the wait, what can I get you. It was a rude, "ORDER". I ordered, and was told it'd be 5-7 minutes for chicken strips... I mean, common - you are a chicken restaurant! :) Before I can even give my drink order, I'm advised to drive up. I get to the window, the girl has my order wrong. I correct it and tell her I want a drink. Her name is Sierra (according to he receipt) and she is what I'd call a grump individual with no sense of urgency or giving a care in the world about her job. I pay by credit card - which you put in a metal box - like you're in the worst neighborhood ever - and finally she drops my food in the window, spins it and walks away. OK, thanks! I won't be coming back, won't be eating here again - and really - someone at Popeye's should take notice. This place is a disaster.

Time marches on: seasons change, businesses open and close, food trends wax and wane, buildings go up and come down. But over the past 20 years there is one immutable thing on which I can depend: the Edgewater location of Popeye's will always have the slowest drive-through and the most arbitrary, desultory and capricious service in town. It never fails--no matter what time of day or evening they will always be out of at least one item I order, it will take them 15 minutes to make more; sometimes they will refuse to take orders at the speaker but make you drive up to order, wait and pay (trailing four or five cars behind you, with a steady parade pulling out of line and streaking past you out of the parking lot in disgust); they will advertise certain specials on posters in the window and then charge more--insisting you need a coupon (nowhere does the poster say that) or meet some other unspecified condition; and you will inevitably be panhandled while waiting for your order. I had avoided the place for the past 2 years because fried chicken is taboo on my low-carb diet. I had forgotten what the stuff even tastes like. But last night, after spending all day (four days in a row) visiting my husband convalescing in the hospital post-surgery, I was tired and hungry and nothing was open other than Mickey D.'s. Besides, I figured I could live a little once in a while. So I pulled in. Popeye's was remarkably consistent--some things NEVER change. It was the perfect storm of all of the above factors. From the time I pulled into the line till the time I drove away, it took half an hour. The voice coming over the speaker in the menu board didn't even ask "May I help you?" or even say "Welcome to Popeye's," nor did it even give me a chance to mull over the menu--all it said was "Pull up to the window." (Not even a "please"). So after sitting in line, idling, for 20 min. I finally reached the window. "What do you want?" the guy asked. "I'll take the 2-piece Tues. special advertised in the window," I replied, "dark, mild." Came the reply, "We only have spicy dark or mild white." So I ordered spicy dark. "Side?" he asked. "Slaw," I replied. "We only have green beans or red beans & rice," he answered. Figuring I was descending deeply enough into carbo-hell as it was, I ordered the green beans. "$4.23, please," he said. I replied, "But the poster says $2.99 for dark and $3.99 for white." Came the reply, "The special is only if you order a drink. And you don't have a coupon." At least the panhandler was inside nodding off at a table. Not wanting to infuriate those behind me any further, I gritted my teeth and paid what he demanded (I wonder if any of the difference gets pocketed). Got it home, and uncovered a shriveled drumstick and a decent-sized thigh, a greasy pale biscuit (which I wasn't gonna eat anyway), and the green beans. How can you screw up green beans? Let me count the ways: varying shades of green (ditto textures--canned and frozen mixed together), swimming in some weird gloppy grayish spicy and smoky translucent slime that looked like what okra does after it drinks too much. At least the chicken was decent (I tasted some of the breading and peeled off the rest). Hence one instead of zero stars. I can go back to my diet knowing I have missed nothing. Why do I ever go back? Well, why do women have more kids after suffering through agonizing childbirth? The brain forgets trauma.....

I come here when I get that fried chicken craving and I don't feel like cooking. Most of the time their fried chicken is super duper good but there are times when it taste like it's been sitting on the shelf for a while. I usually order the spicy breasts and Cajun rice (AWESOME RICE!). I've never ordered anything else. Here is the general Popeyes experience going through the drive thru: 1. Pull up to the order menu thingydo. The lights on the menu will be off but don't worry they're open. Then they will say some crap about trying something off the menu and ask you to wait a minute. This idle time varies from 1 minute to 20 minutes (HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE). 2. After ordering you pull up to the window of course. If there are cars ahead of you again be expected to wait a while. The inside of Popeyes will be EMPTY and they still manage to have long waiting times. 3. Pay and receive your meal. Since they are super slow you'll most likely have to move up past the window so they can walk out and give you your food. Because they somehow get behind. 4. THIS PART IS CRUCIAL!!! Now that you have your food it is important, so very important that you check and make sure your order is right. It's almost a GAURANTEE it will be somehow screwed up. You will be missing that extra biscuit you ordered! They will try to be slick replacing that spicy breast you ordered with 2 spicy thighs because they ran out of spicy breasts! That drink you ordered? Pfft not even registered on the receipt. Oh you wanted that side order large? Too bad. And that ladies and gents is the usual Popeyes experience.

They do a brisk business here so their chicken is always crispy hot, right out of the fat. And always try to find a coupon (not hard to find) for the $5.99 8-piece box! Shhheeet, who need Jewels or to cook yourself at home with them prices? But they right about the hood... like you need a bullet proof vest if you go here. Like being on the south side without being on the south side...HA!

Never again after being double-charged. Ordered a meal "for here," paid with card. As I dined, the person who took my order called out to me, "Sir! Sir! I forgot to swipe your card." I asked, "Didn't it go through the first time?" She said no. So she swiped it again. Sure enough, two charges came through on my bank account. I'll dispute it through my bank and not pay the extra, but I'll also cross that location off my list. Don't know what they were trying to pull, but it's not acceptable.

Customer service is terrible, but the thing I came for is the CHICKEN. It is the best chicken around this area. I give the chicken 5 stars.

I always seem to live within walking distance of a Popeye's Chicken. Hmmm... that should say something about the places I live! But I like it - cuz sometimes I just gotta have me some fried chicken! And theirs is gooood. I also love those coupon deals they have in the paper all the time. Every holiday they always have that $5.99 special for 8 pieces, too. I walked up to this one, cravin' some fried chicken for St. Patty's Day and got that $5.99 deal. Had enough chicken to last for several days. Service was friendly and fast. Can't ask for more!

First time I've had to pay for my food via a bullet proof window. Very strange but I can understand why. I've been here on two occasions and both times my order was incorrect. Though the food is always hot I can't give more than three stars for the service.

omg! where do i start? Like really? Everytime we come here they always messes up our order. Always something missing! Sides, shrimps today it was our drink. We placed our orders so they want us to pull over and wait. And we did. When the lady came out with just our food we thought prolly she'll be back with our drink. But no!!! And my husband went back inside with receipt and he came out without drink cuz he thought it doesnt even worth waiting. Even though there was only 1 person in front of him in the line. They were getting orders from drive thru and ppl inside of the restaurant. Employees didn't seem like trying to be fast or anything. They were just so slow taking their time and have "i don't give a sh*t" attitude. Food is good when it is fresh but not when it was sitting there for awhile! I don't even think manager/owner of this business even see this reviews. Never coming back!, we always say so but after couple of months we just hope they might be better. But this was our last time here. Staff are rude, placing an order is just nightmare and cant get what u pay for? Wtf?!?!?! Seriouslyyyy!!! Hire some better people

Every time I am in this Popeye's I am greeted with a smile, receive excellent customer service and delicious food. Been to some other Popeye's in the city and this location is by far the best. Charquita has waited on me several times and is always so helpful and friendly.

This place used to be horrible. You would have to wait 30+ minutes to get your chicken sometimes. They WERE very unorganized, basically goofing up everything. all the time. If you went "in" to order, it was like watching a parade of clowns behind the counter. Something happened..... there's a new manager and many new people on staff. Now they seem to be doing MUCH better. Our order only took 5 minutes last night. Also, worth noting, the quality of the food has improved. We USED TO get very small wings from them, like Pigeon or Robin wings. NOW the wings are much bigger. They really did improve the place. Now I say that I'll be going there more often, but I really shouldn't because it is very fattening! With this improved service it just makes it easier for me to get fat!!! (O:

Fried chicken is not that difficult. It IS difficult when the person working the register appears to be incredibly unsure, the woman in charge is in 10 places at once, there's a woman behind me saying, "Come awn! Come awn!", and three different people cut in front of me in line. I told the cashier that I was next and he apologized. All. Three. Times. I finally got fed up and left. I'm over it.

No customer service, just sarcastic people taking orders. I just drove off because I'm not giving them my business.

This was my first experience at Popeye's and I was already a little hesitant to eat here when I pulled up to the drive through and saw that there was no menu in the drive through window. What the heck am I supposed to know to order? I mentioned that the menu is missing to the woman working the window and explained that I'd never been there before. "Oh, no problem honey! Tell me what you're looking for and I can help you find something!" So, I mentioned I just wanted chicken and a biscuit. She asked how much chicken I wanted, which cuts I wanted, and placed my order for me. On top of all that, the meal was under $4! I was starving so I had to start eating in the car. Ohhhhh mygosh am I glad I did. It was some of the best fried chicken I've ever had!! And that BISCUIT... I cannot wait to get back there to eat again!!!

Quite the group of bozos you've got working here. It's like some sort of weird prison work release fried chicken employment program for the rude, stupid, slow and lazy.

  • Mari O.

At least the soda was good. I ordered the #7 chicken tenders and waited 15 minutes for my order. I was thinking "oh they're making it right now so it'll be hot and delicious ". Sadly that wasn't the case. They hardly gave me any fries and they were cold. The chicken strips themselves smelled super good but tasted weird. I was thinking maybe it was the sauce but it wasn't. Tasted like the chicken was old or maybe they never change the oil in the deep frier? I ordered the five piece and tried to overlook the taste and finish it because it was 9 bux but I couldn't do it. Sam's chicken tenders are way better and that's not saying much. Two stars for the soda.

Every time we try to go they don't give us what we order. Check all your bags if you get it to go. Took 30 minutes in drive thru. And the order was wrong!

Any body that knows anything about Jodi B, knows that I love me some fried chicken, and if you loves fried chicken then you need to get into popeyes. It's all good, yo! Regular, spicy, tenders, it's all off the hook. The fries be good too. My personal rec is a five piece spicy tenders, cajun fries, grape soda, and an extra biscuit. It'll have you like whatttttttttttttt?!?!?!?!?!? Thank me later.

The customer service terrible very ghetto for this neighborhood long wait for food manger rude and disrespectful even after she made a mistake and forgot to give me my change and when she did she gave me the wrong amount don't recommend anyone one with a little class and self respect to go here unless you want to wait 20min. And like eating out of a unsanitary establishment with a rude crew. I visit was 11-14-14/ 22:56 /ticket number 258

I am by no means a Pope-Yes expert, but this location seems a bit run down. It's right by Loyola, so I would assume they do great business with the college kids. It needs a little TLC and it would be perfect. The food was tasty and my coworkers loved me for picking up food for an office potluck! I would come back, but maybe only do the drive-thru.

  • Rick G.

I feel absolutely stupid for leaving a review for a fast food restaurant, but the custom service at this location puts to shame service I've received at establishments that cost twice as much. My mother, an southerner who's a stickler for manners, was so impressed with all of the "yes ma'ams" and "no ma'ams" she received that she wanted kept asking if we could go back during her visit to Chicago. Bravo to the location manager. Whatever you're doing to train your staff, keep it up!

  • Crystal Z.

I really really love the food at Popeye's, so it makes me sad to write this review. I have gone to this location several times, and every single time I go, the customer service is terrible. More than once, I have gone and have been told they are "out of chicken". When chicken is the main thing you serve, I'm gonna doubt you are truly out of chicken. The employees at this location are so lazy that they start telling this tale an hour to an hour and half before closing so they don't have to serve anymore customers and can just prematurely clean-up the place. They even have gone so far before as to turn off the lights on the drive thru menu to make it appear as if they are closed when they really aren't. To the owner, you should know that the terrible employees you have manning this store are seriously losing you some business from their late night practices...

It's fast food. The service is gonna be a pain sometimes. But y'all. Biscuits and spicy chicken. Mashed potatoes with spicy Cajun gravy. Come on now! Put up with a little slow service. Double check your order before you leave. But awesome chicken fast. And they fry those apple pies so, you know, do what you have to do.

    (4)
  • Joey P.

Two stars for the chicken. That stuff is amazing! Can't possibly give anything higher due to the disaster that is their customer service. I know it's "fast food" but cmon get it together. Can't even count how many times I've been at the drive through and had the person say "does that complete your order" after EACH and EVERY item! It's so frustrating that I've even had to say "Excuse me, I will let you know when my order is complete". Make sure you check your order and receipt every time too, or don't be surprised if something is wrong when you get home.

Maybe I'm partial because this has been my go-to Popeyes for nearly 10 years. I'm about a 90 second walk from here and it's never disappointed. The customer service ebbed and flowed throughout the past decade but it's now pretty decent. In fact, I wonder if Popeyes Corporate implemented a new rulebook for the staff as they are downright eager to create a pleasurable experience when ordering. And for the haters, take a little advice from a "regular": know what you're going to order BEFORE you step up to the register. Stand back, graze the menu, decide, THEN place your order. You'd be amazed how many people dawdle over what to get, only pissing off the cashier that much more. With that said, the chicken is cooked perfect here, especially during the lunch and dinner rushes. The meat is always juicy and the super-crunchy crust is out of this world. Best of all, it's still hella lot cheaper than KFC, especially if you find the lovely coupons that offer a 10pc box of chicken for $8. Trust me, I've lived off that box for almost 3 nights and it's a hell of a good deal. Also, Popeyes is located in an area where there isn't any real competition. Sure, you could go to Sam's, CJ's or even the recently opened Pete's Pizza for fried bird but, obviously, Popeyes has a foolproof system for their chicken that beats all three at the game. And with the nearest KFC being about 3 miles west on Devon and Western, this is as good as it's gonna get if you need to get your fried chicken on. My only caveat: they're not open when the bars close . Wah wah.

  • Magen M.

I'll always love Popeyes. The food here is of course delicious- but the service here is always such a pain. They aren't rude but they're not polite, either. They have to ask 15 times what your order is after you've ordered. They don't write it down and can't remember what it was exactly. Even still- it's usually wrong. (ALWAYS check the order before you drive off or dive in.) The manager yells at the employees in front of customers (that is my worst pet peeve). I'll still come back because i love the fried chicken.

I got a cherry here the other night! Yes - a cherry! Elizabeth A. and I came here when I had a strong craving for this OH SO delicious chicken and while we sat there chatting, she confessed she'd NEVER had Popeye's Chicken before... Much less been inside one!!! I normally only picked up my chicken and took it home, but we decided to sit for a while and eat our food there that night. I've ordered chicken here for all of the 4 years I've lived in Rogers Park I'm happy to share foods I love. Chicken and biscuits are comfort foods for me and the BEST chicken is crispy, crunchity This location NEVER disappoints. There's a fun cross section of students and neighborhood residents who filter in and out with their orders while you're eating your meal, our visit was more of an event. We had a wonderful time chatting and people watching. I know it's a chain ... I normally hate chains, but this location really speaks for it's namesake.

The drive-thru window is bullet-proof, much like the ones that Harold's Chicken on the south side (but better). It's kinda creepy and makes you wonder if someone is going to walk over and pull out a gun as you're paying for your food. The good thing is, they haven't screwed our orders up as frequently as the other locations have. I'd say out of all the times I've been there, they've only messed up once.

I walked into this place about 3 years ago, waited in line for 15 minutes and walked out. Tonight I tried again. Now, the chicken's good, love Popeyes, but this place is a mess as far as service.

I go here sometimes when I work just cause I get the craving for chicken and Harold's is too far to walk. Everything is always clean and neat.. friendly folks behind the counter (may be the uni) and I just love this stuff. I get some kind of chicken.. mashed and gravy is to die for. Last visit I got the chicken bowl.. was REALLY good. Beware.. this stuff is addictive.

I love chicken strips and they have good ones. I don't even eat Popeye's back home but yet I've been here frequently ordering chicken strips. Whenever I got to this one there is ALWAYS a wait and is usually really sketchy.I usually feel like I don't belong there but it is the closest one to me.
