PAY ATTENTION! Some dumb asses gave this fantastic Classic Italian riviera dining Mecca a 1 star which brought their rating down. This is one of the most authentic, well served dining fantasies you can experience! The Chef frequently seen in the crowd getting handshakes. I had the rabbit. Incredible. The pasta sampler of homemade pasta and sauces made me wish I could lick the plate. The sorbet dessert trio so fresh and tangy my mouth waters even now. I've eaten in hundreds of Chicago dining establishments and this one ranks in the top three if not the TOP! Paul Savage MD

Looks like a nice place but I wouldn't know because the Chef refused to serve us because we wanted to use a laptop and do some work while at lunch. Flat out refused - no accommodation at all. Meanwhile there wasn't a single table occupied inside - not one. On the way out the Chef commented to his wait staff "do your work in the office, not here." No problem - we left. Here's the kicker - on the way in the restaurant I literally pointed out a rat on the patio (where guests were eating). I showed the waiter who frantically tried to catch / shoo it away. Classic! So ... Best of luck to you, Chef Douche ... Ratatouille and you are meant to be!

Was looking to taking my wife and kids (15,13,11) to this place for a nice dinner since we're staying at the hotel. Went in and they ask us the ages of our children? "We don't allow children" are you kidding me? You made a mistake and don't even realize it. You're restaurant is not above anyone and by the looks of the ratings, you may want to rethink strategy.

Very nice, contemporary place. Good atmosphere and tasty food. (Coffee and dessert after your meal is a must). Michael was our waiter and he is just great. So professional and charming!

Wonderful place my meal was so yummy and it's been a long time since I've had such good service. The bartender was my waiter and in addition to his excellent service his drinks were just as good. The Chef walks the floor making sure everyone is happy with the meal. All in all a wonderful experience. If you're in Chicago eat here

Roasted, crispy freshwater Bream skin and tender, flaky white meat drenched in a delicious and delicate basil sauce is today's knight in shining armor... and back at the castle waiting to serve is a tasty sample of herb mash, greens and heirloom sweet yellow peppers. The only sadness the kingdom feels is that its only just discovered Pelago. Sometimes a classy, quiet posh lunch option is just what's needed after dealing with all of the harsh BLAH BLAH BLAH and barking of city life. Sometimes it feels nice to sit quietly at a marble top bar, in plush high chairs and have people gently ask how may they make you happier with the gourmet goods they behold. Sometimes it's great to drift off the well worn path of the usual and enjoy soft harp or similar in the background as you pick your high end poison. Sometimes it's not easy to get this sort of 5-star treatment at these more affordable prices. Sometimes you just have to remember her words and then act, especially on this day that we lost Maya Angelou, "life loves the liver of it".

My friend had really high expectation of this place; however our experience was just okay. We got the appetizer special- three types of cheese and the sea bass and risotto for entries with a side of mushrooms. The wine we got was okay but nothing too special. After we finished the appetizer, it took them at least another 20 mins to get our food ready... It seems to be a very upscale and people were there are around 40-60 years old. Service was outstanding.

I had been to Pelago twice before: the first time was pretty good, the second time was pretty bad, and this time was awful. I made a last-minute reservation for an early table (6:30'ish on a weekend evening) by phone directly with whomever answered the phone. When I arrived, the host stated there was no table available for me and to speak with someone else. I spoke to the second person, who said there was a table, but then a third person approached and said there wasn't. At this point I asked to speak to the manager who was curt and rude, didn't take responsibility for the situation, and was pretty obnoxious. Ultimately he said he would find me a place to sit down (this being the fourth go-around), but it was too late - I said the staff had done a very bad job and I didn't want to stay.

My first impression of the restaurant when I stepped in was wow and then continued to silently sing Fancy by Iggy as I was walked to our table. "I'm so fancy, you already know..." Alright cut. Real talk now. The atmosphere was great and the service was excellent. Everything about the place screamed elegance and the service was extremely friendly and attentive. I know that some people don't really like the fact that the servers hover, but I find that I really don't mind all that much. It's better than having an MIA server and having to wait forever for food. So onto the menu. I am a deal loving girl so of course my eyes immediately went to the course sets. Pelago offers a 2 course meal for $30 or a 3 course meal for $42, the only difference being that the 3 course meal includes a dessert. I always want to get dessert when I'm at a restaurant, but usually end up way too full after the entree to even walk, so I opted for the 2 course option with my friend. Note however, that I visited Pelago for lunch so the dinner menu may not offer this deal. I ended up getting the [Warm Baby Spinach Salad with Prosciutto] and the [Roasted Sea Bream with White Wine, Tomatoes and Basil Sauce]. Though the salad was a little on the salty side towards the end, the sea bream was absolutely delicious. Both of these dishes were chef's favorites but not the only ones, so I definitely look forward to returning and trying the other ones. I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you're looking for a fancy treat-your-self place.

Update of my four year old review - still fabulous. Great wine list, Great service. Excellent setting. Wonderful selection of fish, and they're all fresh and tasty. Highly recommended as long as you're willing to spend serious money for quality.

I had one of the best meals of my life at Pelago and everything from the service, ambience, food and wine were simply perfect. The restaurant is tucked away in the boutique hotel named Rafaello and it is a very romantic and cozy establishment. The staff is highly trained and on-point and immediate take your jacket and escort you to the table. There are even stools to set your purse so you don't have to hang it on your chair. We had delicious Italian red wine and the selection of the wine list is very extensive. We all had the pasta special which was a perfectly al dente noodle with crab sauce and fresh herbs. The buffalo mozzarella appetizer was lightly toasted and served with fresh arugula. The entree was Mediterranean fish served with sautéed vegetables and was outstanding. The servers and maître d were very professional and as we left, the chef was there to wish the diners a good night. I was there for a special occasion with family and it was truly one of the best and most memorable meals. Complimenti!

Pelago was recommended to us by the concierge at our hotel and was a winner. I had dinner there on August 17th and the food was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, and was served promptly. Our server was Italian and well versed about the menu, wine, etc. and made some great recommendations. Very classy restaurant with a nice design and intimate feel. I will definitely go back.

Duck wrapped in pork? Heck yeah! It was delightful. I would not mind ordering that again! Salads where good and dessert was great! Ambiance is modern and patrons are that of an older generation. But I choose older crowd with good service over weeping baby's and mothers posting their kids picture on Facebook! The stuffed pasta looked real nice. Look forward to checking this place out for a business lunch.

Phenomenal service! Best experience in Chicago so far. Exquisite ambiance. Staff is attentive and courteous. This is an dressy establishment. Wear your suits and pearls... :-) enjoy the feeling of special - you are paying for it, and staff does well to provide it. :-) had reservations for Friday night, didn't need them. :-) Cuisine: honestly, - one star for lack of special in this area. Simply said - nothing special. I could prepare similar at home. :-) However, the presentation is stunning! This establishment does stand out.

love the location and decor. could be very romantic. we were a group of five, had a large table and I think half a dozen people waiting on us. explanation for specials, water service all excellent. we were talked into the pasta sampling. and i love pasta.... however this didnt do it for me. out of five only one was good enough for me to order ever again, that was the ravioli. the whole snapper was over the top good. great experience, wine was good.

Service was snooty and had little to no personality. Food was mediocre at best and cost way more than it was worth. Was expecting a better experience, but was deeply disappointed. If you're looking for a fine dining place don't make the mistake of going here. Only highlights were the design of the space and there was a live harpist.

Overpriced and underwhelmed. Chicago has some amazing restaurants but this is not one of them. If you are looking for Italian try RPM or Eataly. Not to mention the creepy manager that stood two feet away from our table the whole time and checked on us every 5 minutes. A bit much...

My parents and I just arrived in Chicago Friday night and we had no idea where to go eat dinner. Our lovely concierge at the Ritz/Four Seasons managed to get us a lovely, quiet, corner at Pelago. The concierge branded this restaurant as "Northern Italian," - smaller, lighter dishes without the heavy sauces. This place is, no doubt, expensive. But, the food was absolutely and utterly delicious. My parents and I all had the seafood soup ($25 each), and it was packed full of wonderful shellfish which gave the broth a lovely taste. For my main, I had a whole fish, cooked European style. Freshly grilled with olive oil - just the way I like it. Another wonderful dish I had (shared with my parents) was a pasta with freshly shaved truffles!!!!!!!! And they were not stingy on the truffles let me tell you. The entire top was smothered with large, sprinkled goodness which perfumed the dish just right. I would go back to that restaurant just for that dish. My dad had the rabbit for his main (cooked on the dryer side, but I think that has to do with the meat more than anything) and my mom had a lovely melt-in-your-mouth dish. Overall, we couldn't have asked for a better recommendation. At almost $500 for 3 people (including a bottle of expensive Antinori and tip), it is definitely a YOLO moment. But oh what a moment it is.

Was excited to try Pelagos and celebrate a birthday there. First impression was wonderful. The ambiance and decor was exquisite. Unfortunately that was the best part. We were seated in a small back room away from the beautiful portion of the restaurant. Be careful when ordering as after I placed my order of the roasted chicken with broccoli flan, the server made it appear I could choose a pasta to have with it. I was under the impression it was part of my dish. I was wrong. I was charged for it. It wasn't worth paying for. I would not have cared for even if it was included. It was soaked in butter and more ground sausage than pasta. A guest of ours ordered the steak and mentioned it was tough. Service was okay but we had to wait to pay, even after being told they needed our table for someone else...what???? I'd skip this place as there are so many great places to eat in Chicago. Oh and be prepared to spend big money here. Just not sure any of it was worth it. I won't return and can't recommend it.

My family and I stayed at the Raffaello hotel next door for a wedding and we were looking around to find a place for dinner. It was Friday night and no one had the foresight to make reservations so everywhere was booked except for this place... it later became obvious to us why no one would want to come here. My sister in law was told immediately after being seated that she would have to leave if her baby cried (we were seated outside so apparently a baby crying is worse than the fire trucks and police sirens that drove by). The waiter was extremely rude and condescending. He scoffed that we did not know the appropriate sauces that went with certain dishes. He was annoyed that we wanted clarification on the dishes we were order (everything was written in Italian and we had ppl in our party with Celiacs). At one point, the chef came out and was shaking his head when my sister in law wanted to order a side item that apparently did not fit with her dish. Seriously?! For the price they are charging they should be a little bit more accommodating. The food that came out was overpriced and the portions were tiny. I cook better food than what I ate. That's pretty ridiculous considering that the place had a michelin starred chef. It's absurd they can charge $50 a plate for overcooked fish. Oh yea, the waiter remarked in Spanish to another waiter that Chinese ppl can eat whatever they want and not get fat. (we had a spanish speaker at the table). I am not Chinese and you shouldn't be talking about your guests in front of them. That's straight up rude. Shame on this place.

Very good food, and attentive service but noisy as Hell. Expensive as well. Nice to see people well dressed for dinner and professional staff. These are things I nearly forget living in AZ. Really upscale Italian with unique choices you don't see often.

Pelago is EXACTLY what the neighborhood needed: a cosy, upscale, reliable, high-quality Italian restaurant with outdoor seating! I've been on numerous occasions, for lunch and dinner, and have never been disappointed. The food is authentic, the menu wonderfully curated, and the wine selection impeccable. It is a place for foodies, with fresh ingredients in classic, refined dishes straight from Italy. The setting matches the food: upscale, clear, crisp, open, and comfortable. The decor is fabulous, and the restaurant spacious enough to allow you to have an intimate conversation with the people at your table. It would be a great spot for a special event, just as it would be for an intimate dinner with a significant other. Perhaps my favorite thing about Pelago, though, is the outdoor patio for dinner or lunch. There's a dearth of good, outdoor summer dining in Streeterville, but Pelago hits the spot! Everything about this place is just perfect. I highly recommend it!

Confused because this place has some 5 stars, so maybe I picked the wrong food for lunch. The truffle gnocchi was good but the octopus was probably the worst I ever had. The main host hovered over us like white on rice and really just made our lunch a irritating situation.

Whoa, this is some high end Italian food. Price wise, that is. More expensive than you might expect for a hotel restaurant, but much better quality, as well. Be prepared to pay like you are eating at a steak house. If you are good with that, you'll have a good time. They mix excellent cocktails, and have an extensive, mostly all Italian wine list. When I described to the waiter what I was looking for - old world, earthy and rustic, he came back with an excellent bottle of Italian provenance. I started out with octopus, proceeded to a selection of pastas, and ended with the veal chop special. It was all excellent. The octopus was creamy and melted in my mouth; not at all chewy. The pastas, four small servings of the possible options, were all wonderful, some of the best pasta I've had. I recommend asking for this if it isn't on the menu. Finally, the veal was milky and delicious. Service is good, and the decor is coated in soft blue lighting. It feels like it could be trendy but is laid back. Pelago is definitely a step above the usual hotel restaurant, and a great high end choice if you are staying in Streeterville.

I enjoyed our meal in this quaint yet sleek establishment. We arrived for dinner and were warmly greeted. We were here years ago when it was a dark piano bar. The joint looks clean, bright and modern. A wonderful design job. There are not too many tables so the staff has it under control. Our table captain was an authentic Italian and seasoned restauranteur whom really knew his menu, vino and the food business. Service was sharp, courteous and professional. The meal was terrific, fresh and well prepared. Plating and presentation was superb. We enjoyed a fettuccine and black truffle pasta as well as a very nice snapper entree. Although I would not consider this of Michelin Five Star establishment (there are many in Chicago, a great food town) it is a solid 4. We will return.

Great food. Great great food. Great service. But this place was full of older people. Like a retirement home in florida at 4:30. And we went there on a Friday at 8:00. The wife took me here for my bday but after our experience I wouldn't take any first date there.

After realizing that the Drumbar didn't serve a food menu anymore, my party of 5 decided to come here and eat because we were starving. It is a very small, quaint restaurant who shows their great customer service and attentiveness in every dish served. We got a few bottles of Cabernet for the table and the food...oh the food...I still dream of it. We ordered squid and balsamic/tomato salad for starters. I've never had squid like this before and I will definitely go back for more. Every bite is flavorful and fresh. I ordered the home made fetuchinni with black truffle. Every bite just melted in my mouth. I wanted to order another bowl to take back to Arizona with me. All in all, an amazing dinning experience, great company, and exquisite plates that made the evening a perfection.

We came here on a Thursday night for my husband's birthday. We initially were seated at a lone table in the front of the restaurant and had to request to move as the table was by the door and was drafty. I ordered the grilled octopus to start with, husband ordered the endive salad which was less than average, bland and underdressed. The pastas were both delicious, bold and flavorful. Perhaps most disappointing was the dessert. Warm Apple Tart came out as cold as if from the refrigerator. My hubs had never sent anything back to the kitchen but when charging twenty dollars for a petit desert we decided to ask. The waiter did offer to allow us to change our selection and stated that the menu had to be updated and the tart was infact supposed to be lukewarm which it was also not. When we got the bill was surprise that we were charged four dollars for a diet coke and again for a refill. When such a pricey upscale restaurants charges for what is after soda it left a negative note.

We had a large group at pelago for a birthday party. We were treated especially well, seated promptly and our waiter was helpful. Everyone at the table loved the home-made pasta sampling that was part of the chef's tasting menu. Artfully presented and indescribably fresh flavors. It was an expensive meal, but definitely memorable.

The rating on Open Table was high. The group decided to come here. We were in the area for a business meeting. Some in the group have been drinking. We were very jovial. I was engaging in our conversation thus wasnt paying attention to the menu. The staff was very friendly and service was great. The wine recommendation was great. The house mixed salad was fresh and good. The amount of salad dressing was small which was okay with me. The portion for the homemade penne pasta hen ragu and sage was really small. The sage seems to overwhelm the dish. The others like their dish, which seem to be portioned nicely. The few desserts that we shared were good. I'm not sure if this review would be helpful to you. I enjoy high end fine cuisine restaurant. I'm not a large portion eater either. But my plate was a bit lacking in every sense.

$30 for any 3 courses for lunch of the most delicious fresh authentic & beautifully plated food!!! I died & went to Italian foodie heaven. Atmosphere & attentive staff outstanding! An afternoon I will not soon forget-was so full couldn't eat the rest of the day.

My wife and I ate here Saturday night on the recommendation of a client. I am glad they told us about this place we made reservations, arrived 20 minutes early they seated us outside. Michael are waiter is one of the best I have ever had. He recommended us a risotto with calamari appetizer which my wife almost asked them to make her one for dinner it was so good. The dinner and the desert are to die for there wine selection is great. Anyone who goes there I can guarantee will walk away with a giant smile. Service to desert it just keeps getting better. If the weather is good please sit outside you will enjoy it. Herb

What a cute place! Went with a few friends on a Friday. We didn't have reservations, but they were able to accommodate us right away. I don't think many people know about Pelago due to it's location. The food overall was pretty good. The portions are definitely big, so you won't leave hungry. My biggest complaint though is the excessive use of salt in some dishes, so I'm torn between 3.5 and 4 stars.

It's been over a year--time for an update. Hubby and I went there the other night. The service was excellent--flawless even. The waiter was knowledgeable, helpful but not obtrusive. He kept the wine glasses filled. Serving staff kept water filled and offered more bread. The hostess was personable. Took hubby's jacket without claim check and just remembered him when we left. I needed some of my entree boxed and I thought they had forgotten--but as we passed the hostess stand--it appeared in a bag with a smile. The food was excellent. The scarmoza appetizer salad was wonderful. They split (generously) a white asparagus risotto for us. Hubby loved his humongous veal chop and I was happy with my shrimp/mussels/polenta. No room for desert, but they brought the complimentary dainties at the end. We were seriously happy.

Some of the best Italian food I have ever had. The waiter's recommendations were spot on. The Branzino was AMAZING! And I can't forget to mention the hand made pastas. The service was superb. Anyone looking for authentic Italian food won't be disappointed.

One of the best meals I have ever eaten. Also one of the priciest. We arrived just as they were opening for the evening. Service was impeccable. Since we couldn't make up our minds we opted to do the "chef's tour of the menu" where we got to try a bit of everything. It was all amazing. The pasta was all handmade and the sauces were perfect. The meats were perfectly done and delicious and the desserts were amazing. Yes, it was pricey and I was surprised at the prices on a few things, but this was a dining experience.

Funny how things can change in a week.... Five stars for lunch, three for dinner... Even with the same dish ordered. Servings are very large. The soups are actually a little disgustingly large. Service is ok, lots of people there serving, but the main waiter can be difficult to find.

Pelago Ristorante has to be one of the best Italian restaurants I have ever been to and that's saying a lot to a Chicagoan. We have many outstanding Italian restaurants, past and present. On this day my good friend Mike Hammer & I just had a six course tasting and it was beyond wonderful. The 3 kinds of Risotto were wonderful and the first course tuna and shrimp divine. I have seen the progression of the restaurant over the past year and it just gets better and better. Chef Mauro started with a two course tasting about a year ago and has progressed now to an eight course and the food has grown leaps and bounds. The food was two or so stars bur now it's a solid five! As the Chef has grown more confidence in his cooks he has been able to reach his groove in the kitchen. The product is truly fine Italian food. I had the mantecato baccala and for god sakes it was out standing! It was like a taste of Venus. The dish blew my mind and I have had it before in Italy. The apple tort is to die for! The Pistachio ravioli is like heaven. But His Mushroom Truffle Risotto in the fall was like I was transported to Italy. The rice was not over cooked or under done but that perfect texture. It was not overly seasoned with cheese or mushrooms. It's like selling your soul to the devil good, if I had to die in a plate of food it would be that dish. The best Italian food out side of Italy, I can see why he was so successful in New York and I am so damn glad he came to Chicago to make his new home. Thank god Chef Lydia Bastianich made him come to America! If I ever meet the woman I'm going to kiss her and shake her hand till it falls off!

My husband had doubts about going to this restaurant after reading the reviews. We decided to try it anyway because of referrals from our hotel. The hostess made it obvious that she was put out when we didn't want to first sit by a very noisy group of diners and also turned down a table next to the waiters station. I would understand if the restaurant was busy but it was early and there was only one table occupied in the upstairs area. That got the experience off to a uncomfortable start. The food was just ok and not memorable. We felt it was very expensive for what we ordered. My husband had pasta with black truffle sauce (no meat) and I had the sea bream that was very fishy. Our salad didn't have enough dressing to taste. My wine was about 6 ounces and very expensive for what it was and my husband's martini was ok but also overpriced. We don't mind an expensive meal if the food justifies it but this was not the case here. If you want a great meal go to Joe's Seafood.

Small, quaint - could be intimate with the right person - Italian restaurant. Recommended by and certainly convenient to the Ritz. Enjoyed the conversation at the bar with the very knowledgeable (and likeable) chef/owner; however, the food never matched up with our expectations nor the accreditation from his mentors. Service was a bit stilted, but prompt. Maybe the whole experience was due to it was a slow, Sunday night with only two other four tops. Nonetheless, Chicago has much more to offer, particularly in this venue. Everyone has an "off" day, but outside of Wrigley Field, I rarely forgive or forget...

I live a block away from this place, and somehow my husband really really wanted to try their branzino. So despite a 3.5 stars on Yelp (I am a firm believer of not trying places rated below 4 stars on Yelp), we decided to give it a try. Our experience further proves why I should NOT go to a place rated below 4 stars. We got there 30min before the reservation time and were seated right away. After we sat down, I realized our presence pulled down the average age of existing guests in the restaurant from 50+ to 35-ish. Now we are not in our early 20s, but somehow we were the youngest couple in the restaurant on a Saturday night at 8pm. Hmmmm... Anyways, our waiter Paul came, and he was attentive. He explained the menu well, but two things really threw me off. First of all, half way taking our orders, when my husband was still talking, Paul all of a sudden said "excuse me", walked to another table, walked with some older guest to the main room, and then stayed in the main room (appearing to wait for him?) for a good 5 min before returning to us. Now we've been to enough restaurants, cheap and expensive. This is the first time EVER a waiter leaves in the middle of taking orders. It's disrespectful, and let's face it, Olive Garden don't even do that! Finally when Paul returned, I asked if it's too much food to have both a pasta course and an entree. He was very vague, he gave a speech on what I like and how good the dishes are, but in the end he didn't say yes or no. I took that as a yes, and got both the asparagus risotto and the half duck, which turned out to be a BIG mistake. I had to take 3/4 of the duck home because my poor stomach couldn't take any more food after the pasta dish. Here comes the food: Market fish appetizer: four small bites with octopus, shrimp, squid, and something else. Very refreshing. Stuffed squid appetizer: unique, but I couldn't tell what exactly was in the stuffing, and the polenta had some weird texture. Veal ravioli: this is my favorite of the night. Great flavor, home made ravioli. Nothing not to like about. Asparagus risotto: fresh, creamy, perfectly cooked. My second favorite of the night. A bonus to how they actually divided up the two pasta dishes so both my husband and I had both ravioli and risotto on our plates. I mentioned how we were going to share the pasta dishes, so I like that Paul remembered it. Husband's branzino: it's just some Mediterranean sea bass, so I'm just gonna say it out loud--I've had better sea bass. Duck: the duck meat was cook medium rare, but the skin was really soggy. I'd never expected a $36 dollar dinner entree to mess up so bad on the duck skin. That ruined the whole dish for me. No dessert. As I said, we couldn't even finish our entrees. I'm not complaining about portions here, because apparently they have big portions. All I am asking is the waiter needs to set the expectation right for diners. I understand more entree means higher total bill, hence more tip. But if I ask you specifically whether it's too much to have both pasta and entree, and look at me, who's a 5'6 normal weight female, tell me yes it is too much. A little honesty goes a long way. So if you want to try the place, definitely go with their pasta dishes. Remember not to order both pasta and entree, and try to look old so maybe the waiter won't walk out on you half way through your ordering.

Pelago is a very modern and chic looking restaraunt. I think there was an honest attempt at contemporary italian fare. By this, I mean there was nothing over-the-top cheesy ultra-modern bull on the menu, but some delicious options for a quality culinary experience. Some of the food had great flavors, but wasn't too impressive. We had our orders come out in an odd order and with inconsistent breaks between courses. To me, it was clear that our pasta course was forgotten about for a bit and rushed out, so it came out very undercooked. Then the next course came out too quickly and was unimpressive as well. The response was very nice, though. The waiter was quick to address the issue (even though we did not fuss about it, just commented lightly.) He let the chef know, who made us three of his deserts, which were delicious. I would eat here again, and possibly review again. I have the feeling this place has more to offer and we just so happened to come on an off-beat night. Definitely worth trying.

I came here and really wanted to love this place. Unfortunately, I left disappointed. The restaurant has an intimate setting, and the entire staff makes you feel at home. I started with the tri-colored salad, which was colorful but tasted bitter and wasn't worth ordering. My wife started with the grilled octopus which was very tasty and well prepared. The star of evening were or pasta dishes, which we both thought were very good. I had the noodle pasta with the lamb ragu, one of the best italian dishes I've had. Our desert course was horrible, we sent our apple tart back as it was cold and tasteless. We ordered another desert and it was just ok. For the prices this restaurant charges ($20 desert, $15 drinks, $15-$20 appetizers, $4 for a coke AND EACH REFILL), it's not worth going. I would rather go to one of Chicago's other great italian restaurants instead. Won't be going back.

This place has such potential. A nice setting and very good service. However, for the prices the food falls short. I had a very good Caesars salad which wasn't on the menu. The lobster pasta was OK but the tomato sauce was bland. My wife's pasta was a little chewy and could have cooked a little longer. My gelato wasn't even close to the real thing. There were nice touches to the meal like the salami and olives to start and some nice cookies to end.

what can I saw prob my favorite Italian in the city. Appetizers were well thought out and Pasta was amazing all homemade The main course was also great and desserts too and nice wine list. A little expensive but worth it.

Absolutely perfect. After staying at the Rafaello for a few nights, we decided to have a late dessert at Pelago. With no reservation, they seated us quickly. The service was superb, and our food arrived quickly. The only thing more amazing than the presentation of our dessert was the taste! However, There's nothing cheap about Pelago, including the quality and the prices. It's a wonderful and unique experience, but come with prepared to empty your wallet.

I have worked across the street from this cute little restaurant for about 6 months and one day, my two coworkers and I decided to try this place and treat ourselves to a fancy lunch out on their patio. But of course, on the day we went, it turned into monsoon weather and we were forced to sit inside. We were all disappointed but decided to still give the restaurant a try. We were pleasantly surprised when we walked into the restaurant as the the decor and ambiance was elegant, simple and modern. It was even more beautiful and relaxing than sitting outside. When we sat down they immediately brought out individual pedestals for our purses which was a thoughtful touch. They then brought us breadsticks with delicious truffle butter followed by a gourmet bread basket that came around with a choice of 5 different breads. I had the rosemary focaccia which was great and with the truffle butter, was even more amazing. We all ordered pasta and while the Ravioli and Papperdalle were apparently really good but yet cooked a bit too al dente for their taste. I had the Penne with Sausage and Green Peas and the penne was homemade and perfectly cooked! It was light and delicios but yet filling. After the meal, one of the girls with me ordered coffee and they brought out a old school presentation of coffee topped off with cute little Italian cookies- plenty for all of us to share (mini biscotti, almond pasta cookies, etc.). The service was extremely attentive yet not overbearing. When we were ready to leave the restaurant, the rain was coming down even harder and none of us brought umbrellas so the restaurant brought us three to borrow that we returned later that day when the sun came out. This is a great option for a beautifully elegant lunch right off of Michigan Avenue and gives a secluded feel perfect for a break from a long day of shopping or in our case, a break from a stressful day of work. I highly suggest Pelago for lunch and/or dinner.

Lovely experience. I was promptly greeted and offered a seat at the bar while waiting for my party. The bartender carried my drink to my table pulled out my chair and even offered me a stool for my purse. I was confused as I thought it was a stool for my feet for some reason but it was a very nice touch as a side table for my purse! The salad was amazing very fresh with an organic flavor. I highly recommend the pasta sampler I don't believe it's on the menu but the waiter offered it and it was lovely. I was glad to be able to sample the handmade pasta without having to order it as my whole dish. I had the sliced sirloin in the red pepper sauce with vegetables and mashed potatoes. It was very filling and satisfying. Great flavor in every bite. I had the chocolate dessert with pistachio gelato and it was the most amazing dessert I've had in long time. They brought out free cookies after we ordered dessert...if I would've known that before I might have skipped the dessert since I ate my whole meal! Yes this place is very pricey but the attentive service fabulous food and great atmosphere makes it well worth it. Be prepared to spend a pretty penny as well as a few hours enjoying all the courses they have to offer. This is not a place I would recommend for children...it is a very good business dinner place.

I returned to Pelago the other night to try out their dinner menu. I was once again warmly greeted at the door by the hostess and manager and took a seat at the small bar to have a drink while I waited for my dining companion to arrive. We were quickly seated and ordered a range of food off of their dinner menu. To begin with, I had their octopus salad. This was delicious. A large piece of octopus served over tomatoes- this was my favorite dish of the night. We then split the pasta special of the night which was orecchiette with shrimp and crab. Very tasty and light. But it was there that my dinner experience ended mimicking that great lunch visit that I had a few weeks ago. At my first visit, there was a bread guy who made sure my bread plate was never wanting for a piece of their amazing breads. At dinner, we had to flag down the bread guy twice on this visit to get another roll. But the bigger mis step of the evening came with my entree. I ordered the lamb chops medium rare, and when they came- they were definitely in the medium to well range. I flagged down our server (the same one I had had during my lunch visit) and he whisked the plate away with the promise that it would be made right. The problem? My friend already had his risotto entree in front of him and was done with it by the time my lamb came back out. I think the kitchen should have expedited this "re-do" but it was put back into the computer like a regular order. It felt like we were eating in shifts. I expected a restaurant of this caliber to take his plate away too and bring out two new entree's at the same time. Once re done- the lamb was perfect with a great crust on the outside but I was basically eating by myself. Pelago is obviously still working out the kinks in running a new business as the inconsistency shows. The food is quite good, though, so you know I will be back again to see if they can get that fourth star back.

Really accurate Italian cuisine (having just come back from Italy I think I can safely say it felt like I was back in Italy). This is an expensive and upscale place, but it makes for a very tasty, rich dinner. The staff is extremely formal, holding open doors when you walk in and taking your coat for you when you're waiting for a table. I'd definitely get a reservation here, its pretty popular so otherwise you might be waiting for a bit.

This restaurant canceled our reservation 3 hours before we were set to arrive on the Saturday night before the marathon, because according to the hostess, they do not allow children under 12. We can debate the relative merits of such a policy, but if that is your policy you need to clearly and definitively state such on your website and reservation form. If it is on your website it is not in an obvious place and it is definitely not on your reservation form. Ridiculous.

Modern decor and generally delicious food but most tables feel like they're in a hallway. Red snapper was out of this world with a hidden surprise of perfectly cooked chopped spinich. Sauces were outstanding but some of the pasta was undercooked..almost crunchy. Menu is badly formated and there are no salads to speak of, dessert menu is thin, prices were on the high side. The big problem was when we asked our server to split the bill and put it on two different credit cards...not an outrageous request. It took them almost 30 minutes to figure out how to accomplish that.

Came here with a group and we all went through the 5-course tasting menu. What I really liked about the tasting menu is that each course wasn't a single dish but various offerings within a theme. We had a mozzarella course (3 types), risotto course (3 types), pasta (4 types), fish course (3 types) and dessert (5 types). So over the course of a 5 course dinner I sampled 18 different dishes. In most courses I found something I really enjoyed but I thought that the pasta course really fell flat. What really got to me, however, was the bill. An automatic 20% gratuity for a party of our size (I usually tip 20% but I always feel that when they're including it 18% is much more acceptable). With our wine, however, it turned out to be just over $200 a person. For a $200 dinner I want to be wowed and Pelago just isn't at that level. Cute place with a formal quiet atmosphere but the food isn't worth the price.

CHICAGO HAS A BENCHMARK We dined for lunch at Pelago Ristorante on Sept 12th, as noted above (or below on Yelp). The interior decor is really beautiful and solid Chicago. An impressive painting hangs on the rear wall, enticing you. The mother of pearl fireplace separates the main dining area from the intimate private dining space. All very simple, strong and elegant. Kudos to Kimberly on her design talent and achievement. The dining experience was perfect Mauro. It's not just that I feel we know Mauro. He comes out to the dining room to meet and greet all of his guests. This man wants to know who he is cooking for, and you to know him as well. This is his love, and you are his family. To use the word "cooking" just isn't good enough. He is creating a culinary experience that not only "looks" beautiful, but tastes incredible. On this particular occasion we had so many wonderful dishes being delivered to our table, that I actually lost track. We stayed a couple of hours. A couple of my favorites were the small plate of pear, prosciutto, gorgonzola, the veal, and the deeply rich tomato mozzarella soup. (I wanted to dive into a pool of the soup). Every dish presented was so beautiful and full of flavor. And then there were the desserts . . . I posted a couple photos to show the care and detail that goes into these creations. One must taste these to believe how flavorful they are. All hand made. All I have left to say is "BRAVO" to Mauro and to Kimberly!

Best Italian in Chicago hands down. The atmosphere is amazing and the waiters are very friendly and attentive. Truffled pasta, octopus appetizer and this new seafood trio app is out of this world. Branzino is a winner and so is the lamb chop! Desert A++++ Highly Recommend. Great lobby bar in the hotel as well!

Nice patio and the inside was very comfortable. Loved the food. I got a weekly special which was truffle fettuccine and it was delicious! I ordered a chardonnay by the glass which was also quite good. Service was great though we did feel slightly rushed. I think our wait service was just eager to make sure that we were taken care of rather than actively trying to move us along. Overall would recommend to friends and family and we will be back again!

How do I even begin with this hidden little place right off of Michigan Avenue. I've been on a quest for some of the best outdoor dining spots in Chicago, so when I saw some pics of the patio at Pelago, it looked really delightful. So reservations in hand, we showed up at 815 and they were kind enough to get us a table (with two surprise add-ons) outside after not too much of a wait. We enjoyed cocktails inside first, noticing the great decor and contemporary, award-winning Italian architecture (courtesy of the chef's wife Kimberly Anguil Mafrici) which is very different from most places in Chicago. We were soon seated outside for our dinner. After perusing the wine list, we all opted to stick with cocktails or glasses of wine, forgoing the usual bottles of wine, although the list (100% Italian) looked decent and with a wide variety of Italian varietals, regions, and prices. Our waiter explained the specials for the day, of which there were several, and we went ahead and ordered. For appetizers, we had the grilled octopus, the aged buffalo mozzarella, and the pesto trofie. Each was between $16-20, and at this price, they better blow me away. They did not! The octopus was good but simple and very ordinary; the pesto trofie tasted OK but it's just a pesto pasta basically; and the mozzarella was a train wreck...completely tasteless like a dry grilled-cheese sandwich. OK so as soon as they remove the appetizer plates, I don't even think 5 minutes went by before they brought out the entrees. If there's one thing I hate at a restaurant it's being rushed. I told them to send the entrees back to the kitchen and bring them out at a more appropriate time. So after 15 minutes had passed, they came back. We had the veal chops, the branzino, the lamb ragu pasta, and a simple shrimp pasta. Again all of these mains were quite expensive, above $30 each, and at this rate, they for sure were just average. The veal texture was perfect, but lacked in any taste or flavor, the branzino, lamb ragu, and the shrimp pasta were all acceptable and again simply flavored, but nothing was very complex or worthy of being a memorable dish. The dessert, a white chocolate truffle, was outstanding, but a long-held belief of mine is that you can make anything out of white chocolate and it will blow my socks off! This comes from my high school days of working summers at Mrs. Field's cookies and stuffing my face full of little bits of white chocolate. As far as the service, everyone was nice, white tablecloths, nice linens, etc, but they lack in a few simple things. The first drink my friend ordered wasn't hers, we had to ask a few times for a wine list, the rushing of the foods...these things are unacceptable for a restaurant of this supposed caliber. Chef Meuro Mafrici is apparently a Michelin-starred chef for a restaurant he had in NYC, and after visiting Pelago, it's quite easy to see why the Michelin guide is losing a lot of its reputation for quality.

Took a friend here to celebrate her latest academic achievement. Our goal? Look all classy at a high end restaurant and eat yummy delicacies. Well, Pelago delivered. The waiter recited about 12 million specials, recommended more alcohol than two people could ever drink, and steered us towards different plates based on our moods and needs. We devoured our food in a lovely, classy atmosphere and actually felt full {usually, I still feel hungry after eating at places like this.} The only draw back was that we were there just as the dinner shift started, so there were few tables filled {as we were leaving, the restaurant was filling up.} This meant that there were several waiters, hosts, and bus boys hovering for each of our needs-- even if we didn't need anything. I started taking unnecessary sips of water just to watch my glass get filled every 10 seconds. Despite the helicopter-y presence of the staff, we took it as an endearing sign of attentive and respectful wait staff, which is hardly a downer. Would def come back!!

Pelago is truly traditional and has good food. The wait staff has been on occasion a little stuck up, but recently it has been much better. If you are in the neighborhood and it is a nice day, I would suggest a patio table - great for salad, conversation, and good wine.

I wish I could give 1/2 stars - if so, I would give Pelago 3 1/2 stars. First impressions were great - very chic interior. However, once we were seated we were mobbed by servers. We had cocktails ordered, bottle of wine selected, food ordered, AND bread on the table in under 5 minutes. The wait staff was really pushy and we had a hard time understanding them - all of our servers were Italian with thick accents. After a while it became rather comical - we felt like we were in a Seinfeld episode. We would just smile and nod.... The food was much better than the service. We opted for the 5 course tasting menu. Some of the dishes were out-of-this-world good... black truffle risotto, grilled octopus salad, and veal raviole come to mind. Others were meh... all of my meats were overcooked. If we go back, I would definitely skip the tasting menu and just order ala carte. I feel like I could have predicted which dishes were going to be really great.

Professional pleasant service, wonderful food in a beautiful restaurant. We had a wonderful time! A wonderful veal chop, covered with a tasty Portabelo mushroom. This was preceded by an interesting a delicious shared Calamari and polenta.

I was really looking forward to experiencing Pelago. I love the Rafaello Hotel where the restaurant is located. So my friend came to visit and we had reservations. We were seated in the back by the kitchen (2 women alone often are seated there in restaurants) so we asked to be moved. We both chose to drink wine by the glass and we commented on the very short pour. Okay, we both order fish. Mine was a Bronzino and it was dry, just okay...nothing on the side. Nothing offered. We ordered a creme brûlée to share, and the bill came for $180! Okay food was blah, ambience is good, location is great, but not much for the money. Oh and a side bar, we rarely saw our server. We tried so hard to get her attention. I wanted to use my one for grumpy & no show servers " excuse me, have I done something to insult you?" They look at me quizzically, and then they say "No. Why?" Then I say, "Because you seem so mad at me, as displayed by your service." Then they apologize and I haven't insulted them too much. It is called for on a rare occasion. I just didn't like the experience I had here at Pelago, and I wanted so much for it to be wonderful!

We went to Pelago to celebrate our anniversary, based on a recommendation from a work colleague. We loved the ambience, it's a beautiful restaurant. The pasta was good, the dessert was delish, and the wine was very good. For our entree we shared the "halibut for two" special of the evening and although the flavor was great, my fish was mushy and I wish it had been served hotter. The service was not good - our waiter, though pleasant, brought my husband a salad he did not order, and he forgot to bring one of the pasta dishes we DID order. Overall, for the $ (or I should say $$$!) I expected a more impressive dining experience so me for, Pelago fell short.

I have been three times to the Pelago, outside and inside. And every single one of my visits over the past three years have been outstanding. The service is the best you can ask for, the food is as good as Italian food gets, anywhere. It's all in all one of my favorites spots to eat in Chicago!

Rarely as a gluten free couple do we get the option of ANYTHING on the menu crafted to be gluten free- but Pelago's does just that! We started with beef carpaccio that was tender and melted in our mouths like butter- delicious! My husband and I both had the black cod and it was prepared beautifully! We even had multiple dessert options and settled on a hazelnut mousse with chocolate and pistachio ice cream- wonderful! Overall we had a lovely evening and enjoyed everything we put to our mouths! Well done and thank you chef for your intentionality with those of us who require a gluten free lifestyle!

The atmosphere is lovely and the wait staff was very accommodating. We were surprised at the bill though - after we had ordered a waiter returned and asked if we would care to sample the Chef's Pasta Platter. We said - yes - thinking it was complimentary-a kind gesture from the chef. The waiter brought three entree sized portions - and we were a little taken a back to later realize this was an additional $60. Word to the wise - clarify everything that is ordered here. One serving of the Chef's Pasta would have been sufficient to "sample." We had been to the restaurant earlier for lunch and were very impressed. The ambience of the room shines in daylight, so we recommend it as a consideration for lunch.

Very elegant setting, flawless service, nice all italian wine list. We really enjoyed the grilled sardine appetizer special, the dumplings with ragu, and the whole red snapper. Will go back and explore more of the pastas. Quiet enough for a business meeting or date night.

WELL, the food and service was great but after we left my husband looked at the bill and they charged us $17.00 for a cosmo. That is ridiculous! The sad thing is it wasn't even that good. But $17.00, come on. I've talked to many people and they say even restaurants in New York don't charge that. Someone even said maybe it was a mistake. So go for the food but not drinks unless you want to be grossly overcharged.

If you enjoy REAL Italian food (not Olive Garden sorry), and you haven't been here yet...you shall be whipped by a homemade pasta noodle! If I had the choice of what pasta noodle; it would be the Fettucine with Truffle Oil! You have never tasted a dish like this (unless you've been to Italy, and then it will feel like home). I'm not a huge dessert fan, yet have made a separate trip just for the gelato and other amazing deserts they have. Their pastry chef fakes me into believing I have a sweet tooth. Point: If you haven't been, and you deeply enjoy food (especially Italian); put down the all-you-can-eat bread sticks/soup/salad and get over to Pelago! It's worth every penny!

If you live in Streeterville, than you'll appreciate this restaurant. It's authentic, sincere and an elegant place to dine in the neighborhood. The pasta is fresh. The decor simply elegant- transitional style. Ambience is romantic. The chef offered nice surprises and overall it was relaxing dining experience. Looking forward to returning soon.

A couple of friends and I met at Pelago, which is in the Rafaello Hotel, for lunch at the suggestion of one. It had recently opened and word on the street was that it was all that. As one who likes to do her own research, I yelped it and other reviews confirmed what I heard. My two lunch companions and I arrived at Pelago at 12:30 and there was only one other party seated. An emptyish restaurant always worries me--either a pack of rats just ran through the joint or the food isn't that good. Well thank Baby Jesus neither of those instances were the case. The hostess informed us that this particular lunch crowd saunters in right between 12:30 and 1pm and sure enough, within 5 minutes, the lunch crowd arrived. The decor is absolutely beautiful and we were lucky enough to be seated near the mother-of-pearl fireplace which is a definite show-stopper. We had two servers, which was kind of weird but also cool, because they were both super friendly and made great recommendations. Maybe one was in training. Anway, Pelago has an insane corkage fee so we didn't bring wine but we chose a delicious bottle of chardonnay which made up for it. Now on to the food...the three-course prix fixe seemed to be the best deal so that's what each of us chose. It was extremely hard to choose because everything on the menu looked so darned good. Finally I decided on the pasta trio appetizer(gnocchi, ravioli and troife...yummy), the sea bass and a grilled vegetable salad. This meal was slap-my-mama good (but I'm not crazy enough to do that because if you knew my moms, you'd also know I'd be dead by now)! I can't really remember what my friends ordered because I was so enthralled by what was on my plate. I'd like to come back here for dinner and check out the night-time vibe and menu.

One of the top 5 Italian restaurants in the city. I went here for lunch about a month ago and it was a great experience! The service was perfection from valet to the Hostess to our Waiters. And the decor was absolutely stunning! White, feminine details with an airy sophisticated feel. We had a bottle of wine and the prix fixe menu. The pasta is all made in house and wickedly scrumptious. I also had a flight of cheeses as my final course, which was amazing. I would definitely recommend and I can't wait to go back for dinner!

WARNING: ANGRY CHEF/OWNER/INSULTS CUSTOMERS IF THEY DONT LIKE HIS FOOD. LOOK AT ALL THE HORRIBLE REVIEW ]S FOR THIS PLACE BEFORE YOU GO.EVERYONE SAYS THE SAME THING All I can say or yell THE WORST!!! I would give this place a 0 if I could. My wife and I went with another friend and wound up having one of the worst experiences of or dining career. Long story short we ordered our food the octopus came out it was cold, undercooked, and smelled like the bottom of an aquarium. I sent it back, with that out came the chef/owner. He said I want to make you happy you don't know good food so I will make you something. We said ok out came the octopus again only to be cut up in little pieces still stinky and awful. Out came the chef again extremely angry started to insult us that we didn't know good food and if I want grilled octopus I should go to a greek restuarant. He started screaming and ranting to a point that I finally said please walk away as I was starting to feel this was going to end horribly wrong. I was embarrassed for him, he does not deserve to own a restuarant. Then the bill came with all the charges on no removal of the octopus. I called the waiter over he took the check back came back said it was all corrected and it was the exact same check. What they didn't think I would look??? They finally brought the corrected check and we left. If this guy says he is a michelin rated chef I am the King of Sheba. He is not a culinary artist he is a culinary FOOL. SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO ELSEWHERE.

Never again! Last Friday, I had an 830 reservation. We got seated closer to 9pm, but the hostess was very nice about keeping us informed of our table's status. When we got seated, my wine glass was dirty. It took a while to be able to order. My burrata appetizer very tasty, not worth $24, but good. My main entree was a lamb ragu that was over-salted. I had to send it back and it still came back over-salted. The other pasta dish in my group had the same issue. The fish and chicken dishes were very good. We had to ask to get our water filled several times. Then, when the bill came, we were overcharged $18 for drinks we didn't order. The waiter was very nice but the service overall and food was not worth our $500 bill. The restaurant is small, but cute. It has a small bar area and is connected to the hotel so the bathroom is in the lobby of the hotel.

I almost never write reviews, but we had an exceptional experience with Pelago yesterday. I needed a location to host a group lunch meeting and I needed a) privacy, b) good food, and c) a guarantee to be in and out in 1 hr 15 minutes. Pelago gave us a beautiful private table in a small room with a fireplace which was perfect for a business meeting, and a set 3 course menu, which I found to be excellent value. Our wonderful head waiter, Lydia, did a wonderful job keeping everything timed perfectly, and I couldn't have asked for better service. The food was delicious, and we were able to place all the orders several days in advance to expedite the process on the day. The atmosphere was perfect: elegant, very quiet light background music (classical), and private in our little area. I would return here without question, and would love to spend more than just an hour and a bit next time.

Very good, but not great. We sat on the patio which was really nice, and the service was excellent, but I found the food to be a mixed bag. I ordered the spinach cappeletti to start, one of the waiters suggestions, and found it to be surprisingly mediocre. My dad insisted we split an order of truffle linguine for the table, which they split it into four servings and brought between courses (nice touch). It was perfection; I've had similar dishes, but this example was perfectly decadent without being too rich or over-truffled. The monkfish 'ossobucco' was my main, but I appreciated the play on the idea more than I loved the dish, with the exception of the sauce (of which there wasn't enough). We split some sorbeto (blood orange, blueberry, and lemon) to finish, and each tasted like biting into peak-of-season fruit. So, up and down. Major props to the wine manager/sommelier. Sensing our aversion to the many triple-digit priced bottles, he recommended an excellent sangiovese that ended up being one of the cheapest available.

One of the best dining experiences I've ever had in Chicago. The food was divine, the room is sparkling yet understated, and the staff is SO attentive and polite. In fact, I asked to see the chef (who was at the door saying thanks to the guests anyway) to tell him the apple/almond/plum tart was the best single dessert I've ever had. What a terrific experience - I tipped 30% because of the absolutely perfect service.

Waiting for our table was fine. The bartender recommended a fine wine. That's about all the good that happened. Our initial service was spotty. My fish arrived and had a large spot that was undercooked. The greens were entirely gritty. Our waiter was nowhere to be found. I spoke with a nonresponsive manager. He said that he would call me the next day after speaking with the chef. Over a week later I called him and he told me that I had imagined it all. How does a place like this stay in business? They don't. I will wager money that this restaurant will not be open in a year.

My son and I decided to try this place nearby our downtown lodging in Chicago on the evening of Oct. 20. As we arrived we were greeted with smiles that seemed a bit too broad. Our waiter was Tony C. We declined a glass of wine for $14 and asked for tap water. I asked about the size of the dishes, and our waiter said that they were small enough for us to order another two courses and dessert if we wanted. We eventually ordered two pasta dishes, Tonnarelli ($20) and Maccheroncini ($24), which were two of the least expensive items on the menu. Our waiter made a little grimace and asked if he could bring two salads for us. I asked if we could split one. He replied that they were small, and I assumed the cost would be too. I neglected to ask the price and he didn't offer one. We were shocked when the bill came. They were $16 each! We felt ripped off. The pasta was very ordinary and probably reheated. The "Insulata Mista" salad was good but nothing really special. We declined dessert. Total cost was $83.98 with tax, plus a $10 tip brought the bill to $93.98, that for two pasta dishes and two small salads. We hear from friends that this place is reasonable for lunch, but our experienced left a bad taste in our mouths.

Just had lunch today at Pelago, what a beautiful room! Especially love the drawing in the back with different kinds of seafood, makes you hungry before you even started ordering. Service was lovely, the chef greeted us and brought us complimentary olives, porcetta and buffata cheese (he said goodbye to us after we finished lunch as well) . I had the regular roll and sesame bread and my companion had focaccia bread and they were very tasty. We both selected the 3 course luncheon, I went with swordfish carpaccio and the crab meat, spinach thin noodles whereas my friend had shrimp salad and halibut. Love how toothsome the noodles were. Seafood was very fresh as well. We both picked the chocolate, hazelnut dessert and it was a good way to wrap up luncheon. They brought out extra sweets for us and the lime meringue mini tart was out of this world! Can't wait until they start dinner service, definitely will be back.

Pelago is so romantic! The staff here is so friendly and helpful, not the least bit pretentious at all, no matter what your age or race (which trust me, happens A LOT). Our server, Brian, was really nice, we told him our budget and he helped us pick out a bottle of wine that was in our range. For our appetizer, we ordered the Scamorza con Insalata di Ruccola e Pomodorini (Aged Buffalo Mozzarella Cheese Seared with Arugula and Tomato Salad), absolutely delicious, such fresh ingredients. For entrees we had Tonnarelli alle Melanzane e Mozzarella (Square Spaghetti with Eggplant, Fresh Tomato and Mozzarella) and Bistecca di Manzo ai Funghi e Cipolla Candita (Sirloin Steak with Sauteed Carmalized Onions and Mushrooms), both were amazing. The steak was HUGE, easily 2 meals, and the spaghetti was so hearty and filling. For dessert we had the Frollino (Cookie Ring filled with Mascarpone Sabayon, Banana and Blueberry Sorbet), which I absolutely loved! I normally don't like bananas in my dessert, but it was done right! Everything about this place is great, go go go!!!

My wife and I went here for lunch on our anniversary day. This was a little tucked away place that we didn't know about. The food was AWESOME! It was a fun atmosphere and the staff were really friendly. The service was very timely and we thoroughly enjoyed the food, the appetizers and the desert. We definitely plan on coming back again!

I recently had the $30 three course lunch at Pelago. It was beautiful day so I wanted sit outside and Pelagio has a very nice exterior space (I was going to Francesca's on Chestnut but they had no outside seating). I have to say this was by far the best $30 lunch I have ever had (four courses if one includes the cookies brought out at the end). The mozzarella/arugula/cherry tomato salad was excellent. The veal ravioli were perfect. The tiramisu was far above average. The service was also excellent, attentive and helpful. All in all, it was top notch, perhaps one of my new favorites in Chicago.

Fine enough, but think about the neighborhood. Had a nice dinner tonight for 4. The food was ok, though the excess salt prevented me from more than sampling my pasta, Cappelletti con Ricotta e Spinaci. (Interestingly, while the staff was really attentive about not letting me have my sweater hang on the back of the chair (they insisted on hanging it), no one noticed the return of the pasta to the kitchen or my comment about not wanting to take it home because there was just too much salt.) Risotto with White Asparagus was the best of our party's starting options. Mains ordered included a baby halibut for 2 and the pheasant special. With the latter, the breast was cooked far beyond medium/medium rare, perhaps a tip of the hat to the neighborhood crowd of lovely older people who seem to represent a portion of the core audience. Price a bit on the too-high-side.

The dishes are beautiful and the service is completely professional. Very stylish dining room. Paintings by Italian artist David DiBiasio.

We ate here by accident (a long story but we were with good friends so we didn't really care). We won't be going back anytime soon. We were seated at a nice table, in a beautiful dining room. There must have been 6 staff hovering over us at once. The waiter gave us a wine list, which included their specialty cocktails, I guess we were supposed to pass the wine list around to see the cocktails. When I asked for additional lists, he brought one extra. Which was great, but there were four of us. We all ordered cocktails, and were asked which wine we would prefer with dinner. We had to explain we would choose the wine after we selected our dinner. The waiter explained the evening specials before the drinks arrived. I think there were 6 specials. He was very difficult to understand, because of his accent. It would have been much easier to print the daily specials. We also had to ask the prices of the specials. We ordered 3 veal chops, and one steak for the main courses. We also tried the grilled octopus, the fettucine truffle and the scamorza salad. The waiter asked if we wanted to try the risotto tasting, which we agreed to. He did not mention that three small spoonfuls of tasty risotto per plate were $18 each. The appetizers were good, but nothing special. The veal was good, but not remarkable, and the steak was well prepared. I thought the wait staff hovered over us the entire meal to an uncomfortable degree. The overall experience was average at best, considering the prices charged. There are many better choices available in Chicago where the food and service is at least as good if not better. I hope this restaurant has a core group of followers, because I can't imagine why I would return, given the alternatives.

There just seems to be something missing with Pelago.. It does not deliver the quality of food that you expect at this price point.

We tried the Chef's Tasting menu and absolutely loved it! It is 2 to 4 bites of most of the menu items, presented in a visually elegant manner. The high level of service, very charming and personable, yet very informative and professional contributed to a wonderful evening. Flights containing 2 to 4 bites of appetizers, risottos, homemade pastas, fish, entrees of fish or meat, and desserts ranged from subtle to intense flavors and always pleased. Plus we walked away very full and contented. This is a must-try!

I'm not in agreement with other reviews here. I just didn't find what I ordered to be very tasty. I had lunch here, ordered the duck. Yuck. I don't do rare bird. Medium rare steak, perhaps. Served with a turnip tasting root vegetable of some kind mashed like potato hidden under the raw bird. I also had a shrimp salad. I wish I could be more kind in reporting on it, but there just wasn't anything positive about it that would be worth mentioning. (Well OK, the ingredients were all fresh but basically for $17 it was a 1/2 cup of spring greens sprayed with olive oil, 3 small shrimp and three capers on a plate, LOL...you see, I tried to warn you I didn't have anything nice to say.) The best part of lunch was the dessert, the flourless chocolate cake in the picture someone posted here, it was heavenly. There's a nice decor, but it screams "Eyes Wide Shut" to me for some reason, not my cup of tea. I prefer cozy, warm and welcoming dining rooms. This was a fine dining experience that failed to impress. I could think of one or two places I'd rather experience for a fine dining lunch, the Drake Tea Room for instance.

Several weeks ago, I called to make reservations for 15 people on a Saturday night. Our guests were very important customers with their spouses. I asked if that will be a problem. No problem, I was told. What I was not told was that we would be on separate tables. I was also not told we would have no menu choices (let alone how much each tasting menu would cost). But strike three came when I told everyone there that one guest had a seafood allergy and the first course they put in front of her consisted of shrimps and scallops. We all sat there and waited for her replacement food while ours got cold. I spent $3,000 that night; wouldn't you think they could keep track of something that simple?

Wonderful restaurant. Recommended by the peninsula hotel concierge and we were not disappointed. Staff was very attentive, atmosphere top notch and they made my 11 y/o daughter feel special. Food reasonably priced and delicious.

My boyfriend took me to Pelago for my my birthday, and I have to say that I was more than pleasantly surprised. After reading very mixed Yelp reviews, when he told me that he had chosen Pelago, I cringed in the back of my mind. Who wants to experiment on their birthday?! The pasta (we tried the veal ravioli and the fetuccine with truffles) was so incredibly authentic and fresh. I have not had pasta that amazing since I was in Sicily 2 years ago. I would definitely come back for pasta again. If you have been here without having some pasta, you have made a giant mistake! We also shared the trio of mozzarella (how can you go wrong?), the octopus which was my least favorite dish of the night, and the monkfish osso buco. My boyfriend also got the sardine salad special, but I did not taste it. We did not save room for dessert unfortunately. Everything was very delicious and fresh. I cannot understand the negative reviews of this place, but to each their own.

Wow, the service by the hostess and Maître 'd was so bad I left! Horrible is kind. I was asked if I'd like to sit outside or inside. I asked for an outside table. After being led outside, I was advised that there were only tables for 4 available and asked would I like to have a table inside. I was disappointed but agreed. I was led back inside where the hostess sat another party. Returning to me, she directed me to another table but was stopped by the maître' 'd and was told not to seat me there. At this point I decided to leave. The restaurant was half empty but was unable to seat me. That has to be one of the worst experiences I've had in restaurant in awhile. Don't bother going to Pelago!

Fetticine with black truffles shouldn't be missed (split it as a starter), great wine list, terrific patio for dining al fresco and attentive staff. Bread service is weak at best, but that's minor.

My family had our Christmas dinner a little before the holiday. We were a table of 6 on a Sunday and when the reservation was made (a month in advance) we requested a table to the side of the room (someone in our party had dined there previously and found the center of the room to be quite noisy). We also requested the server that the aforementioned diner had on their previous visit. Neither request was granted. which wouldn't have been a huge deal but an annoying start. Then we met our actual server. I literally have never met a more arrogant person in my life. He was overly insistant with his recommendations and acted frustrated when we didn't take them. He also referred to every item on the menu as the "best you'll ever have". News flash - when you call everything the best you'll ever have it kind of dilutes comment from the things that really are great. He also interjected himself into our conversation throughout the dinner - giving us his opinions on tiger woods, etc. The food was a good point. We split a few appetizers (against the recommendation of our server who said they weren't splitable - they were). The shrimp and tomato salad was fresh and light, several people at our table had the pasta trio and that was really well liked by everyone. Gnocchi was light and flavorful. I had the squid risotto which was quite tasty. . .not rubbery at all. My husbandand I finished with a cheese plate that was very tasty. . .good variety but lacking some of the normal accompaniments. The wine list has a lot of good options on it. The biggest annoyance came at the end of the meal when we went to pay. Mr. Arrogant brought us the bill and when we asked it be split he said they couldn't do it. When we asked why he attributed it to a "policy" . . .not that the machine was broken or it was some 1942 credit card machine that somehow didn't know how to split checks but they wouldn't. I was so tired with interacting with this guy at this point that we just said fine and put it on one family member's card and said we'd settle up later. . .but seriously what restaurant can't split a bill??? Overall the food was good. . .but the experience with the server tainted the whole experience for me. We were literally avoiding talking when he came around so that we wouldn't engage him further. I will not be going back.

This is Probably one of the best Italian Restaurants in the United States. I've been to many two & three star rated Michelin Restaurants throughout Europe and New York City, and must say that Pelago is at a minimum as good as three star Michelin. The food is beyond amazing. Prepared with extreme attention to detail with a flavor that just sends you back to Italy (not to mention the portion sizes are just right). The wine list has a great selection of wines, although not huge, the quality that is on the list is sure to please even the greatest of connoisseurs. The service was attentive and on the mark. The servers were always there when we needed them to be, yet we still felt like we had our privacy. The decor is exquisite, a blend of modern and classic design makes you feel as if you are in a world where architecture meets culinaria. The paintings and colors within the restaurant truly make the senses come alive (not to mention the aroma from the food). Its nice to see such a fine establishment run by the Owner/Chef who frequents the dining room regularly while still running the kitchen. My guests & I were truly made to feel at home by both the staff and by Chef Mauro, himself. Pelago is a true example of what a Modern Italian restaurant should be. If you ever get the chance to dine at Pelago, allow the Chef to order for you, believe me you won't be disappointed. P.S. Leave room for dessert...

We recently had a dining experience that I can only describe as schizophrenic at Palago. Having dined at the restaurant once before we returned hoping to repeat a dining experience that was enjoyable in respect to the food, service and ambiance. The second visit was a disaster. For some unfathomable reason the restaurant decided to book a group of twenty that were seated at a table that literally ran the length of the very small dining room. The only way wait staff could work the room was by constantly bumping diners on the perimeter. The party going on at the banquet table quickly grew louder as wine and cocktails fueled shout outs and loud laughter to the point that wait staff had to literally shout the specials to diners seated less than two feet away. Wait staff were over extended and it was reflected in the service. Food that had been beautifully plated and delicious on our previous visit could only be described as terrible. We will not be going back. And I will certainly never take a client there. We love independent restaurants and understand the financial pressures they operate under. At the same time I am a business owner myself . Bottom line,to achieve real success you never cheap out or denigrate your brand. And that is exactly what happened on June 14th. Very sad. Tip. If you are going to try this restaurant call the day of your reservation and make sure thy are not seating more than four in a group in their main dining room. If not, You may get lucky as we were on our first visit.

I dined here with a large group and they presented us with a 3 course meal. Everyone was blown away by the presentation, all enjoyed the food, and everyone had a great overall experience there. If you're looking to splurge on a unique Italian experience, I would recommend this restaurant.

I took my wife here for a major anniversary. It is a high end, sophisticated, quiet and elegant restaurant, much more like a restaurant you would expect to find on 55th Street in New York than in Chicago. The service was friendly and professional, unlike another high end Italian restaurant further west where the food is excellent, but the service chronically amateurish. Pelago has an excellent wine list at all price levels. It is very possible to order a very good wine without taking out a second mortgage on the house. My wife and I split an excellent pasta dish (which was more than adequate as an appetizer) and then each ordered our own entree. My wife ordered grilled tuna, which was perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. I ordered a veal chop, which was tasty but a little fatty. The bread service is fantastic and I would urge restraint. We are not big eaters so between the pasta, entree, bread and wine, we skipped desert. They brought a plate of really good cookies anyway and we ordered some first class espresso. Valet parking is available for $13. The whole meal, with tip was just over $200, very reasonable for a restaurant of this quality. If the veal chop had been just a bit leaner, I would have given the restaurant 5 stars and 4 stars may be unfair. In any event, the restaurant fills a real need in Chicago and we expect to return.

Love the food - can't stand the staff. We arrived just after 5pm with no reservation. The woman who was the host obviously has never been a host before. She seated us all the way in the back of the restaurant and told us that was all she could give us because she planned out the rest of the lay out of the restaurant for the rest of the evening. When I questioned her about this because it was so early she asked me if I wanted to see her "book". It was 5:00!!! No one was in there! We told her we would be in and out and she just didn't care. So here we are the only people in the restaurant all the way in the back next to the kitchen door. What an idiot. I must say the food was extraordinary. Truly an amazing culinary delight. The host just needs to be replaced - what an idiot. Most people would have just been irritated enough to walk out. We stuck it out because we were intrigued by the backround of the chef and his culinary skills from what we had read and heard. Each dish from the app to the salad to the main courses were fabulous, fabulous, fabulous. Their wine list is quite nice as well. They just need to get a host in there who knows what they are doing and who is more inviting.

Amateurish, dismissive and disdainful staff and service, although they did appear to fawn over some what must be regular clientele. After being guided to a nicely sized table for our party of three, I was asked to move to a table for two that three place settings were squeezed into. When I resisted, I was begrudgingly told I could remain at the original table Then, I was served a cocktail other than the one I ordered, a grilled octopus appetizer that was cold (after a forty minute wait), and an overly chilled bottle of white wine (a $64 chardonnay). These inexcusable gaffes don't bode well for this small, tastefully decorated but surprisingly noisy newcomer, where I recently had a very disappointing dining experience. If you're able to overlook such shortcomings, the food is good, but not remarkable. The staff that I experienced is poorly trained, from the people greeting you (who seemed reluctant to seat me until my entire party had arrived), to the wait staff (who were not at all helpful guiding us through the menu), to the invisible bread servers, to the busboys (who seemed to hover over our table waiting to remove our plates). Complaints to the staff - including the manager - (which were also being expressed by the diners sitting next to us) are not responded to in a gracious and accommodating way, which is one one should expect in a restaurant with this restaurant's pretentions. At these prices, you have many other options which will far exceed the dining experience at Pelago. Even the complimentary desserts in recognition of all the staff blunders, were offered in a cold and smug way. Perhaps my experience was idiosyncratic, but I wouldn't return anytime soon.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
