I love this place, yet, don't go enough. Big windows, unlimited coffee, sweet treats that are actually good and free wi-fi. What more can you ask for? Yes, that too, great people watching! Perfect for all people. I see people studying for an exam, on first dates, painting and drawing and watching other people. Was it you?

My roomate and I are here more for study than food, so I don't know if I can help much in that department except to say that that you should do yourself a favor and buy a warm Cobblestone muffin. Atmosphere is nice in a "I'm a chain but I'm trying not to look like one" sort of way, but due to this Panera's location, it's often hard to find a nice booth because of the ridiculous student+laptop: seat ratio. (4-seat booth to every student most times). If you have a relatively high tolerance for various white noise, you'll be okay. If not, between the moderatley loud Muzak, the brick-like flashing pagers, the alarm and foghorn noises coming from behind the counter, and that group Sunrise escapees? that seem to live there and sing songs/complain about the state of medicare rather boisterously, something is bound to drive you over to the Walgreens for a pair of earplugs.

Love the soup. Though I REALLY wish they hadn't gotten rid of the Fiesta con Queso soup. That was by far the best ever. Though garden vegetable is growing on me. And of course broccoli cheddar is a great staple. Nothing beats a soup and half of a Bacon Turkey Bravo sandwich. Prices are reasonable for a cheap lunch. Lemonade is great. Bagels are good when you're hungover (although I will admit that I like Einstein's more) And the service at this particular branch (on Diversey at Clark) is the best I've come across yet. They are friendly, very sweet people who take care of you in a hurry. Not like the one I sometimes go to downtown where I have yet to be taken care of within 15 minutes of walking in the door. So I applaud this branch! Well done!

Me and my former co-worker use to go here every morning and then head over to the store we worked at and make us tasty sandwiches, with the bagels we'd pick up, such a wonderful variety....prices are just right ...I like Panera's!

In a rush and starving - we picked up two chicken sandwiches with rosemary bread to go. Served toasted with melted cheese, made them especially filling. We also had the best crisp apple. Hit the spot..

i spent an inordinate amount of time here while in school. like, 20 hours a week, twice that when studying for the bar. they have since remodeled and i can't say i love it ... there are a lot of weird nooks and crannies and comfy chairs, i suppose to accommodate the hordes of studiers that always take up the tables (probably encouraging them to take the chairs while saving the tables for the actual eaters.) good idea, but it's a weird layout nonetheless. the food here is expensive, of course, and not healthy unless you lay off the sauces and such, but it's nice to have fresh sandwiches and salads. there are some elderly regulars, i assume from the retirement building down the street, that spend all day here and never fail to amuse me. they're like barflies.

This is a great place to bring your laptop and Yelp :) No really, there is free WiFi, tasty bagels and treats, and a good selection of salads and sandwiches. I especially like the half sandwich and salad combos. It can be hard to score a seat during peak breakfast hours, but it so worth it for the free coffee refills and WiFi.

    (4)
  • Don E.

They better not stop offering free WiFi! I just don't get this place. The sandwiches are small, overpriced and frankly not that good. The soup is good, but that's not enough to overcome the fact that I can get a much better sub, at around the same price, at a bunch of other places.

it is old faithful as far as free internet goes. buy a cup of coffee, refill at your leisure. do your stuff. i like to sit in the one seaters. it's comfy there. what is the deal with that huge thing of wheat on that one way too big table though. who made that decorating choice? gets really crowded at times. like the bagels. like the chocolate croissant. like the tuscan chicken sammy. like the hazelnut always there coffee. people communicate with one another a lot here. "how are you?" "what are you working on?" "are you almost done with that table" " can i share your table?" it's kind of like a small microcosm of a nice world. sometimes you gotta just sit back and watch.

Customer service is hit or miss. Some days, they are very friendly and polite and other days, they seem miserable to be working and are pretty unfriendly. The reason I give this Panera only 1 star is because it is the SLOWEST service I have ever encountered at a Panera. I don't know if they are under-staffed or what, but expect to wait in line for a long time to get your food. You might as well take a seat and not grab your food to go, because you will be standing there waiting for a long time. If you are in a hurry or on your lunch break, there are many other options on the block that are much quicker and will save you time.

Excellent sandwiches and pineapple upside down muffin. There is a good vibe to this place and free wi-fi makes it a lot better than the starbucks across the steet.

I am not as big of a fan of Panera as I used to be, but I do still go in there when I am having a soup craving. Their broccoli cheddar still ranks high on my list. Their Asian chicken salad is also very good. I like this location. It is very clean and they just remodeled it, so it looks really nice inside. If you are looking for a light lunch not a bad place to go if you are in the area.

Panera Bread has good sandwiches and soups that satisfy, especially during the winter. They also have bagels and various pastries in the morning. Panera is a good place to grab a quick bite to eat when you don't feel like a greasy meal at a fast food place.

  • Marshall R.

I live right near this Panera and am addicted to this place ever since I lived in St. Louis where they have one at every corner (Panera bread started in St. Louis btw). I try to study here once in a while, but usually there are some people hanging out that are distracting because they meander around and talk to themselves. Also, there is a contingent of a few regulars that hang out in front for hours like they are in someone's living room. Great for the free and reliable internet, but not the best studying option.

Is this place a joke? Seriously, I couldn't believe my experience today when I met a couple friends to grab something to eat. I ordered a tomato & mozarella salad and chicken caesar sandwich, and an apple, not chips or anything else! AN APPLE! When I got my buzzer going, I was surprised, there were 4 other people waiting in front of me, at how fast these people are. Well guess what? Even asking the food preparer if this is order number whatever, I just wanted to be sure I am getting what I ordered, and not someone else's food, he mumbled yes, and I could tell from his face he didn't give a crap. I see that they can't even put an apple on a freaking tray, so I asked for an apple, they just put it on my tray and didn't even say oh sorry or anything of that sort. So I go outside to sit, only to find out they gave me a chipotle chicken sandwich, which had BACON in it, which I do not eat, and God knows where my mozarella salad is...I got a chicken caesar salad in stead. If I didn't park my car at a meter, and wasn't in a hurry to catch the sale at VS across the street, I would have gone inside and made a total scene. I can't believe these people have an income from not even working properly. There is no way in this life time I will ever go back to this place. What a shame! They should immediately replace their manager, oh only if they have one!

I can't believe I haven't reviewed this place. I go here all the time before work and on days off to get a bacon, egg and cheese on cinnamon crunch bagel! its savory and sweet! The staff is always friendly and explains the business model to newbies. They implemented a new feature where you can just say "round up" to donate the change back on your receipt. They have boxes where you deposit what you want to pay. Everything is generally very quick too.

I'm actually sad writing this post. I love the premise of this location but the service is horrendous. I ordered my gluten-free salad with no bacon and donated more than what my meal cost. While waiting for my meal, I noticed that my receipt didn't have an allergy notice or no bacon on it. I talked to one of the line cooks who had already made it. His response was, "now I have to throw perfectly good food away." I'm sorry maybe if your co-worker had noted my allergy, you wouldn't have to throw food away. Give it to someone that is less fortunate. So the rude worker then places my bowl on the plate with my silverware. He places a baguette on the silverware. I asked him to take back the bread so they could save it and politely asked for new silverware. Needless to say that was offensive. In the fantastic interaction with the line cooks, they took my receipt to verify the meal. I later went to use the restroom and wasn't able to enter because I didn't have a code from my receipt. All in all I don't know if it was the ignorance of the worker(s) or lack of training from management. I'll just save my panera cravings for my work location.

I haven't been to panera in a long time. And now I'm remembering why. I had modifications with my sandwich, given I don't do dairy. And man oh man, I opened my sandwich when I got it & it was just sad. I didn't ask for much-- chicken, spinach & some condiments. So imagine my disappointment when I got this. Come on guys, you can do better. I did speak up because, for $11 I think it should be a bit better, that is my opinion.

I went into this Panera Cares around six in the evening. I ate my food while reading from my Kindle. A man comes to my table and says, "Sir." I didn't look up because I thought he was a beggar. When the man didn't move away I looked up and asked, "what?" He answered, "we are closed!" Another man who had been sweeping the floor was staring me down with obvious seething hatred. He followed me out to the sidewalk and I thought he was going to attack me. I will never step foot in this Panera again. There is something evil about this place.

    (1)
  • Victor K.

An ignominious end to a bad experiment!! Don't understand why Panera was paying exorbitant rent to serve the needy while taking money from hard working customers who wanted a good meal in a safe and clean environment.

I think this is the coolest idea ever. If you don't know what this place is about, please go check it out! Basically they have "suggested" prices and you can add more if you'd like or if you're hitting a hard time, you can pay less. I really thought this was awesome when they first explained it to me and it actually motivated me to come here more frequently. I don't know how many people are actually not able to pay, considering this is kind of a nicer area, but I like that it gives people that option, just in case. As for the food, it's your basic Panera with sandwiches, soups, salads, etc. It's the same as every other Panera, which I personally enjoy, so I like it. I felt like the servers were really nice and enjoyed working there, which always makes a dining experience that much better.

I wasn't too thrilled with the experience. I thought it felt more like finding out what I had in my pocket and then telling me what I can afford. No. Actually it was like that. The suggestion was asking me how much money I had and then telling me what I can get. I pretended to have a dollar. I was told I could get a cup of coffee. I would of went to McDonald's. I actually had more money. Just testing the system to see how much crap big business can put forward. Wrote them they never get back. What is the loss of one customer for life? Eat what you need. Pay what you can.

    (1)
  • Alissa S.

What an amazing idea! This spot helps give back to the community! They allow people the chance to work an hour or so in order to get a free meal. The staff that works full time are very upbeat and friendly. When you order they tell you the suggested price and you pay what you can afford or pat a little more to help out. They also have a table at the front where you can buy really good bread and bagels for a dollar.

  • Michael S.

Looks like I was correct in my previous review. The place is closing at the end of the month. Posted sign says it's due to increase in rent , but I am sure the lack of competent management and customer service all contributed to this closing. Wonder what will go into the space now. It is kind of sad that needy people will not have this resource anymore, due to the company's rudeness to all customers.

This location is one of the first Panera Cares businesses in the nation. What is Panera Cares, you ask? Take your average Panera Cafe, turn it into a not-for-profit cafe, place "Suggested Donation" above all the prices, tell your order to an employee, give the amount of money you are able to afford based on the suggested retail price. Give extra, give less, it's up to you without eyes watching. This Panera remains "self-sufficient" by those who are fortunate to donate, while giving an opportunity for the less fortunate to eat. With all this said, I have a few thoughts to share based on my visit: -Cedric or another employee greets each customer asking if they know what Panera Cares is all about. Then there are flyers with facts about food insecurity (i.e. "1 in 4 U.S. children are struggling with food insecurity"). Seems a bit overwhelming but it gets the point across while not being overly pushy to over-give. Yet it does make you feel a bit guilty into donating. -A big plus is that I don't have to worry about loose change in my pocket since I can just round up or down and give bills...or get rid of the spare change in my pocket. Money is money. -I must say that Panera keeps it classy with the same great product, decor, and perks such as free WiFi and an outdoor patio. -I feel like a better neighborhood for this establishment would be Uptown since there is a much higher percentage of public housing and food insecurity than Lakeview. I guess their explanation is that they need a neighborhood like Lakeview with deep pockets to give more so the doors to remain open. -While there are some "odd" folks in the vicinity, nobody was too smelly or bothersome that I needed to avoid while eating my "Pick 2" lunch. This may come off wrong but it would be a plus if they provided an automatic hand sanitizer machine at the door. It is a known fact that those who are homeless or less fortunate have higher rates of infection due to their lack of access to healthcare. -I absolutely loved the idea that near the entrance/exit there are yesterday's baked goods with a donation box. All in all, I hope that this business idea is successful. Panera offered my suburban hometown a healthier option over all the fast food chains and I was thankful for that. I hope that now those who are unable to afford food other than Doritos and cherry pies have a healthy option. Hopefully those who are begging on the streets to buy a meal are getting fed and no longer need to beg to survive. As I have previously stated, I think most of these folks come from outside Lakeview which makes me continue to question its location. Stellar idea over all!

You need a quick meal and are waiting till payday, look no further. Panera cares is a non-for profit place that will not force you to pay to get a good meal. They know you will do the right thing, but this place can help you out if you are struggling. the menu items are exquisite. all of the items are on regular Panera menus. This place has earned its character. If you need a full meal and are concerned about the price, Panera Cares will help you. They may not fix poverty, but these business helps give food in peoples bellies at least once a week. They really do Care.

    (5)
  • Patrick R.

Panera Cares is nothing more than a tax write-off for the parent company, Panera Bread Company. In the two and a half years that Panera Cares has been in Lakeview, it has been a disaster. Their "pay-what-you-can" policy has attracted more bums and low-life people to our neighborhood. Homeless people that are alcoholics, drug addicts, and mentally ill, frequent Panera Cares. And because their location is near Clark and Diversey, it's easy to get to via public transportation. Low-lifes from Uptown, Ravenswood, etc., go to Panera Cares for a free meal, and stay there for hours. The crime rate in the neighborhood has risen, since Panera Cares opened their doors to these dirt bags. Well, the GOOD NEWS is that Panera Cares is CLOSING, effective January 31. I hope they take their low-life customers with them. Good riddance!

Always a pleasant experience. I am really glad that they are in this community. You can buy yummy day-old bread here too for a suggested donation of a couple bucks. Not bad! Wish there were more Panera Cares cafés throughout the city!

Panera is not my favorite restaurant, but it's a fine place for someone like me who is on the go. I wanted to go out of my way to review this place, because I love the "Panera Cares" concept. I ate there today, and it all went smoothly from the service to the food. I really thought that it felt communal too. Yes, there are people from all walks of life, which I think is great. Call me a marxist, crazy, commie pinko queer, but I think that this is one of the best things I've seen in a while. You privileged, ignorant self proclaimed 1%-ers sound like the biggest douche lords I've ever heard of. If you have a good heart, and think that food is a right and not a privilege than spend your money here. I know so many that eat panera like me often because you're on the go. Why not buy from a Panera that is doing good?

    (4)
  • Shaina K.

This location is now a Panera Cares, which is an incredible concept. There are no set prices for anything, instead there are suggested donations. You pay what you can afford. If you cannot afford to pay anything, then they ask that you volunteer in their kitchens.

    (5)
  • Ryan O.

I wasn't aware of this concept when I stopped in recently, but I am a fan...for the most part. I fully understand the concept of a community supported cafe. It is great that people can come in and get a healthy, warm meal regardless how much money they have. The prices do seem somewhat higher than a normal Panera - $18 for 2 cups of soup, 1/2 ham sandwich and 2 bottle waters - and then they ask you for an additional donation. If I lived in the neighborhood again, I would frequent more often. I hope that this continues to be successful.

  • Jennifer H.

This program is truly amazing. It helps people to be able to afford a whole meal for just $2.00 and you can come back once a week from that point after and give whatever you can afford even if all you have is one penny and get a bagel and cream cheese or whatever bread of your choice. If you can't afford anything at all you can volunteer to work for them by cleaning up the tables or sweeping the floor or even just greeting the customers. This makes it truly possible for even homeless people to be fed a delicious meal that normally they would not be able to afford. Great for families that are low income to be able to sit down and have a delicious meal out!!! The establishment is clean in a beautiful neighborhood which is incredibly safe and it also has free wifi so it is also a great place to meet for business. Especially wonderful for students who are on a tight budget to have a meal and it and study. The service is also fantastic as the employees are extremely kind and incredibly helpful. You can feel the warmth and love that Panera "CARES". The fact that they hane set up various locations that ate exclusive Panera Cares specifically is just heartwarming and actually really does make a differance in this world. If more businesses could be like Panera Cares this world would be a much better place!

  • Kelz M.

I'm chuckling at the 1 and 2-star reviews by people who expect this to be a "regular Panera." The whole point behind this place is that it's a community-supported cafe that is for the purpose of helping out those in need on a regular basis. Their money comes from people who donate above the recommended prices. Here's the low down: Yes, there are homeless people inside. If this offends you, you might not want to dine there. Yes, there are people who are dirty and/or socially awkward there. If you don't like it, there's a Potbelly's across the street. People are only allowed to have one, free entree per week. They may, however, have a pastry and a beverage daily. Donations and discounts have been fairly even at this location. Which is why they selected Lakeview over other areas - they knew, in this demographic, the give and take was likely to be even and they were right. If you're more interested in the quality of the cafe, here's what you need to know: The food is good and the service is very fast. The staff is very friendly and extremely helpful. The restaurant is clean. The only negatives I can think of are that the bathrooms aren't large enough (at least the women's room isn't) and it can sometimes get a little crowded in the main dining area. Other than those, two things, it's a nice place with a good, community-conscious concept. Tada!

    (4)
  • Stephen R.

It used to be a nice, middle-class place for a sandwich and soup. It isn't anymore. Constant loitering and panhandling, especially since it's gained notoriety. Panera's always been a little different from others due to the diverse mix of Diversey. But now it's arrogance from all sides. Simply avoid it. It's not worth the hassle for a Your Pick Two. Installing bathroom locks should be the first sign of trouble (they've only done this since the switch), so stay clear. Unless you really need that chain store food.

    (1)
  • Michelle P.

Looking for a place to get a quick lunch and I turned to a familiar chain. I didn't know anything about the "Panera Cares" concept until I walked in the door and read the signage. Great concept - there's enough people wandering around Lincoln Park/Lakeview willing to cough up money for all sorts of ridiculous things, and so many people willing to pay $3-$5 to have something like a sprinkle of goat cheese or a couple of shrimp added to their salad. At least at this Panera your extra money is doing some good, and helping to pay for the lunch of someone who isn't as fortunate as you, and doesn't have that extra cash burning a hole in their pocket. But if you don't want to donate extra? Fine, then don't. If you aren't making a donation, and you aren't needing a donation, then this is just another Panera. The prices are the same. The food is the same. Panera is one of those cookie cutter chains across America. I like it because the bread is fresh and they are one of the rare chain places that has vegetarian soup. So in this restaurant you might have to *gasp* sit in the same room as poor people. Well here's a newsflash for you elitists out there - this is America, and you don't get to choose who gets served by the restaurants you patronize. I was there at a busy lunch time, and the crowd didn't look any different than any crowd at any fast food/counter restaurant. In fact, the one thing I did notice is that the service was friendlier than nearly any chain restaurant I've eaten at. There was a greeter at the door, and another near the counter asking me if I was ready to order. The cashier and the person who gave me my food were full of smiles. And a manager came to check to make sure everything was okay. If it's the "Panera Cares" concept that pushes staff to be extra friendly and helpful, I'm all for it. I'm really appalled at the comments made by some of the other reviewers here. Believe it or not, as you walk around the world, you are constantly surrounded by people who may be poor, homeless, and hungry. But if your ignorant selves are so bothered by "knowing" that you are in a place with people who are poor, homeless, or hungry, then eat somewhere else, where you can blissfully pretend to be isolated from the problems that your neighbors face.

Where to start? Shrinking portion sizes, no more sourdough roll with soup, barely any cheese in my french onion soup, not to mention my turkey panini was the saddest looking thing I've seen recently. SInce beef prices have shot up, I noticed all of the beef and roast beef offerings have disappeared. No more Asiago Roast Beef Sandwich (My Fav) Now it's just high profit items like chicken and turkey. It just seems like Panera is just focused on expanding and putting profits before customers. This is exactly why MBA's shouldn't run restaurants. MBA's only care about profits, restauranteurs, on the other hand, care about customers.

This place used to be nice and pleasant. Unfortunately now it is a terrible gathering for all the homeless and vagrants in Chicago. This establishment is really ruining the overall neighborhood. There are so many vagrants harassing you for money etc every single day. This neighborhood used to feel safe and now it does not at all. I really hope this place closes, it has done more harm to this neighborhood than good. Very sad.

  • Angela T.

I've been going here about 4x a month to help stretch my food budget and yes, I donate something every time. (I don't pay full price, because Panera's regular prices are absurd. $10+ for a bowl of vegetarian soup, fountain drink, and small pastry? From the grocery store I can get something similar for as little as $4, though of course, Panera's vegetable soup tastes better than canned soup.) Every time I go, I stay for several hours and read or chat, because I like the environment and my boyfriend often comes with me. Yes, it can get crowded and there are homeless-looking people inside. So what? They sit and eat like everyone else and hey, at least they don't hog the electrical outlets, yell into cell phones, or have screaming children. Yes, the bathroom door has a keypad and there's sometimes a plainclothes cop by the door. I didn't think anything of either, so I don't know why some people on Yelp are freaking out about it. Most retail stores have a security guard of some sort and watch you on camera in addition. There's also domed cameras in the dining and food prep areas of the Panera that I imagine were there before the store switched to nonprofit status. (If the cameras in Panera bother you, start looking at the ceilings in other businesses and you'll see just how often you're being surveilled.) I've never seen any kind of altercation or outburst or anything that made me uncomfortable. Perhaps I'm just not as easily ruffled as other people? Also, I've seen people bring their children, laptops, textbooks, and smartphones, and there's at least one elderly couple that does paperwork while eating. The homeless-looking people are in the minority. Are there downsides? Yes. It can get loud when it's crowded, they need a larger vegetarian selection, I'd like it if they were open later, and the volunteers clearing the tables are sometimes a little too friendly. By the latter I mean that sometimes it's clear that the volunteer is bored and s/he will keep coming by to take a plate or two, when I'd rather be left alone. None is worth subtracting a star, not when it's donation-based and clearly helping a lot of people. Hence, five stars. And finally, at the end of each day this Panera donates the remaining bread and pastries to an area food pantry. I've stayed until closing enough times that I've personally seen the food get bagged and picked up, so this location not only helps people by serving them discounted food in a respectful manner, additional food goes to those using food pantries.

I've been a customer here since it was a regular Panera Bread. The food, staff, and service here are still very good, comparable to the Paneras in the Loop. But since the switch to PaneraCares, I've become less inclined to come here, even though I appreciate the concept and donate when I can. The place has become more chaotic -- the last few times I've come, there's constantly a bunch of people milling about the entrance, sipping their coffees and chatting loudly by the coffee stands. The microwave is perpetually broken so you can't heat up muffins. Sometimes the dining area also smells. This location is no longer a reliable place to get a good meal in a quiet, calm environment. Of course, it's not a regular Panera, but it is running the risk of alienating the returning customers who do donate, if it keeps letting the quality of experience deteriorate.

Since they switched, I have been three times; all orders were messed up. Before you even order, you have to pass a full time police officer, and two Panera workers who stand there and have to explain what the concept is. Pay? Dont Pay? Free? Pay more? This place is a disaster.

The people behind the counter seem genuinely friendly, and the food here is the same soup, sandwich, pastry menu you'd find at any Panera. But the cliques of people who seem to inhabit this location are both fun and irritating at times. There are two, maybe three very distinct groups who hang out here at any given time: 1. The college grads and near-grads who hijack every table in the restaurant, thinking that they're still in college. Children, SPREAD OUT PAPERWORK, TEXTBOOKS AND LAPTOPS ON YOUR OWN DESKS AT HOME. PAY YOUR OWN WIRELESS-DSL BILL. Stop camping out here for friggin' hours with your text books and laptops. Panera Bread is NOT A STUDY HALL. Venture in here on a Saturday afternoon, and you'll see a sea of laptops and half-empty coffee cups. 2. The mid-rise apartment building above the restaurant, and a few buildings nearby, are full of Refuseniks and old communists from former Soviet Bloc countries. You'll know them because they'll come in with their walkers, canes and order coffee. Then they'll sit for hours, fall asleep and slump over in their chairs. 3. The old Lincoln Park guard. These folks remember when Lincoln Park was bohemian and tawdry during the 1970s. There are a few of them roaming around, and there's a skinny older lady in particular who manages to get the exact same seat almost every time I see her in here. She has a certain faded glam look; I call her, Grizzabella the Glamour Cat. She's actually pleasant. I do have to write one thing that confirms what another reviewer wrote about: when I was there last weekend, I noticed a fly buzzing around and landing on some of the pastries. Do they realize what flies do to "eat" what they land on? Eww...

Employees who were friendly to everyone. People quietly eating and talking to each other. A few homeless youth and adults coming in quietly and politely for a meal. Everyone was smiling and courteous. Brought my husband and daughter with me, and will do so again. Not everyone in Lincoln Park/Lakeview lives in a high-rise and can take advantage of the expensive cafes and other amenities in the area. I'm sure that this is a nice reprieve from the soup kitchens, food pantry food, and other meals that the homeless, seniors on a fixed income and youth without families receive. I hope some of the folks with these snotty attitudes take them elsewhere. I'd rather enjoy my meal alongside these hungry folks in peace! Way to go, Panera!

Donation based pay for people who may be short or needy. Pretty cool. This is a great thing that they do...I didnt know they had been doing this as the last time I was here this was a regular panera. Thumbs up!

Just.....no. No no no. I stopped in because I was walking by and suddenly felt dizzy-duh, Kelly! You didn't eat! So i pop in to grab a bagel and a coffee. The idea behind this location is....well, it's like that one friend everyone has-nice but socially awkward and is better off staying home playing World of Warcraft while the rest of the group goes out. Panera Cares would just be better suited in a different kind neighborhood. Uptown, perhaps, like others have suggested. The dining area was dirty....and what really weirded me out is the worker who took trash off the table next to me but completely bypassed the trash on the armchairs across/next to me. He TOTALLY looked at it to. Just so weird. There were other sketchy people strewn about the rest of the dining area....one guy appeared to be asleep... It all just felt dirty.

As I write this, I am happily tapping away at my new Asus netbook right here at this very location. I brought along my new toy to try it out at various Iocations before taking a short road trip. The area is wonderful, of course -- I just came out of a film at the Landmark across the street. Easy access, check. Great food. Check. Nice staff, check. In fact, the eagle-eyed woman at the counter noticed that the woman before me dropped a sizable bill on the ground. Green tea sweetened with fruit juice - check. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. Shade. Great people watching. A way to enjoy the great outdoors comfortably, while getting some "work" done. Can't really think of anything else I need right now. If I decide to indulge in dessert, there is plenty of that, too. Love the fact that you don't need a code and there does not appear to be any restrictions on length of time using the Internet. Ahem. Coffee Bean in Santa Monica, Ca. It's nearly 5pm on a lovely, gorgeous early September afternoon. Can't wait to see what it's like at other times of the day. Willing to bet that weekdays are even more comfortable. Plenty of people here, but still feels comfy and not stifling. And then there's a Starburcks across the street, in case this place got jammed. And a Mickey D's down the road apiece on Clark, iffen I ever got desperate or really needed to get cheaper eats. I'll be back, for sure. Next time, most likely for breakfast or lunch! This place is so nice, it almost made me forget to miss Borders around the corner.

I used to go here weekly before it became "Panera Cares" ... or rather, Panera takes advantage of your charitable impulse and tries to pass their "concept" off as justification for a lack of transparency. Community kitchens are a great idea, but they should be driven by the community not a corporation.

Panera Bread has a New Name... Panera Cares Cafe.. And.. they are doing Business in a whole new way! Our Channel 2 News had a story last week about this Panera Bread on Diversey Pkwy making some big changes.. Boy..did they ever.. This Panera is now operating as a Non-Profit Organization.. And.. this is how it works.. When you place your order you are expected to make a donation of the suggested amount as long as you are financially able to do so.. And.. sometimes if you are in really good financial shape you can donate a little extra.. which will help feed someone who can't afford a meal..:) Panera is now operating solely on donations.. and there are donation boxes located on the counters.. It's based on the honor system.. I just want to say I saw the manager of Panera treating a man who did'nt have the money for his meal with great kindness.. Offering him his choice of menu items for his lunch.. And.. I myself.. donated a bit extra and I was treated to a couple of Chocolate Chip Muffies..:) Thank You Richard! So.. Now besides really great food choices at Panera, Soups, Sandwiches, Salads, Breads, Muffins and other assorted items Panera is showing a Human Touch which is truly heartwarming.. I am so Impressed and It was lovely to see this change come into effect.. 5 stars to this Panera Cares Cafe.. You have a fan in me.. Also.. as far as I know this location on Diversey Pkwy is the only one that had made this change..

I know Panera is a chain, and that's a non-starter for a lot of people, but I'll always have a bit of a soft spot for it. Fifteen or so years ago, it was a very nice addition to my hometown where fast food ruled and continues to rule. It was the only place to get good quality bread, fresh squeezed orange juice, and pastries that weren't doughnuts. So with Panera, I have a bit of what I suppose you could call loyalty. This particular Panera, though, attracts a bad element. Not gang members, bikers, or some other counterculture. No, I speak of the laptop homeless community. They stretch a small cup of coffee into a four hour session of Facebooking and uninteresting blogging, with free wireless some kind of birthright. Law students lounging, their lavish libraries bereft of them. Lincoln Park housewives clicking away in the cafe while a nanny wheels the double wide down Surf. People who cried when Steve Jobs died, and left notes at his bizarre memorials outside of the Apple stores. They've all congregated here, dicking around on their machines, trying to look important by doing so in public. I'm just trying to grab a quick lunch before a flick at the Landmark, but there's not an open table in sight. Unlike some of the homeless people here, just trying to warm up and get off the street for a few minutes, you do have somewhere to go. So please head there.

I love Panera because you can do the whole half sandwich and soup or salad and it's always tasty. Their sandwiches are good and taste fresh. I used to love the Tuscan Chicken, but they don't have that anymore, so I have the Chicken Caesar sandwich or the Turkey Bravo, both are great. The Cheddar Broccoli, chicken wild rice and baked potato soup are all really good. Oh and they have tasty lemonade and some good coffee choices too. The only thing I hope Panera would carry? Normal salad dressing options...like ranch or italian. No, I would not like bbq ranch, thank you, just regular.

This review is a little late but here goes......I used to love this place. Now I refuse to return since they turned into panera cares. More and more bums have come to the area. Same old characters who have refused assistance from local support groups but loiter outside of panera during he warmer months. On a few occasions I noticed an officer manning the door? Who the hell wants to dine at a place that has an officer to protect hem. Not me. If panera really wanted to help they would donate to a soup kitchen and not try to make themselves look good in the media. Thanks for bringing down the neighborhood.

Horrid Horrible Place. I live across the street at 533 and since Panera turned into Panera Cares I have had to hurdle over drunk urinating homeless people to get home. I am appalled that this concept takes zero accountability to educate and inform their patrons about how to be respectful and dignified members of a community. I have had several occasions where I have yelled at people for public indecency. "Sir you CAN NOT URINATE ON THE SIDEWALK". I am in the process of contact the people responsible for this and begging them to take appropriate measures. If it doesn't clean up we need to go to our alderman about this. While I am all for the concept in general, they are missing a key piece to it - teaching gratitude and respect to disadvantaged people. It will be a shame if we force this place out of the neighborhood because of these issues.

I love Panera Bread, but this location is terrible. Went there on a cold night in December and there were flies buzzing around the pastries. I realized it just as the Eastern European counter girl asked if she could help me. I was like "Uhhhh...I was going to have a pastry, but there are flies on them." She shrugged her shoulders, gave me a blank look and said "Yes" and kept looking at me like "well are you going to order, or what?" I mentioned that she was Eastern European because I had the identical experience when I was in Budapest and there was a fly in my wine. I pointed it out to the waitress and she said "Yes. And you have a problem with this?" and gave me the same deadpan stare. As a positive, the girl at Panera was very helpful in suggesting other places in the area to have coffee and pastries!

Definitely deserving of four stars since it's right at one of the busiest intersections ever, but never seems to be so busy that you hate being there. I recently accompanied a friend here for lunch and it was full, for sure. But it wasn't packed, you know? We didn't wait in a horribly long line and we found seating (outside!) immediately. There seemed to be just enough tables to accommodate all of the people in line... the turnover was perfect. Obviously, the food is the food. The broccoli cheddar soup is probably the best thing ever made (and you know it). You know the food is the same at all of these joints, so there's no use in trying to tell you something unique about my culinary experience here. Good place to stop if you're in the area and in the mood for a quick bite. Parking located 1/2 block north on Clark or Broadway - you have your choice of parking garage. Good luck trying to find a street spot. Don't forget to pay the parking box!

Panera cares = Enjoy the company of smelly, loud, obnoxious vagrants while you eat. Thats AFTER you get past the overbearing employees explaining their new 'concept' and hitting you up for extra money since you dont look like you sleep on the street. Screw this place. Ill never go to another Panera, ever. No thanks... Ill never be back. Set this crap up in a POOR NEIGHBORHOOD...

Dated upon starting yelping - was my first review) his one slipped thru the cracks: "a metropolis like Chicago much less like the hood @ B'way/Diversy there are an abundance of places that want your hard earned cash but few that can deliver what I have recently discovered as savory & sweet as Panera. Aside from the home style setting it's the quality if service that brings me back as often as possible. The manager treats every person with courtesy & respect (including his staff) and creates an inviting atmosphere. That is rare. It is for that reason I will continue to return." Today 5/13 I continure tio patronize Panera not only cuz their scrumptious deserts and fine breads. Pay 2.50 for an entire french baguette. but now not so sure what happened to that fine ass manager w/the stunning eyebrows, man was he nice to look ad. In part cuz my libido and in part how anyone with the demands of his employees and patrons was so approachable and considerate so much so my panties were in a bunch.. Seriously tho, been there twice since and although no sign of hottie, they've adapted a new concept that integrates their service as a business to producing a gateway twd a stronger economy by charging a suggested fee/cost. To my knowledge their profits benefit the community. How much of it they keep to cover overhead is unknown as the benefits of maintaing employment at a "non" or "not" for profit establishment. "Ir-regardless friends, the quality is superb, as is the service. I hope you all take a lithe time to relax with yourself or with company. Happy Daze bois n gurls!

there have been bums on diversey FOREVER. i'm not sure when raschel showed up but there was crime, harrassment, beggars and degeneracy here WAY before july of this year I'm gonna bet "raschel" is either a lazy cop or a jealous merchant. I visited and lived in this neighborhood for years until a month ago when my best friend died of cancer and i got kicked out of his cha apt on surf which goes for $2500 on the open market. i have been in panera 4x in the past 2 weeks because i'm broke from moving my dead friend's stuff and trying to stay afloat w/o eating mickeyds every day (bcuz the place i had to move to has too many roaches to eat in, let alone cook in, and no working refrigerator). ive had money, and knot had money...when my friend was dying and couldn't chew i spent $50 on a cab ride to white castle so he could have some solid food...when i was well-off i still clipped coupons and would NEVER pay $9 for a sandwich...there are buffets u can get for that. but thanks panera...i know this place won't last long because even though i made ZERO today i still donated a dollar 4 my sammy at closing time and saw only ONE bill over a single...a 10...that's the biggest bill i've seen in my 4 visits i realize its great to get a deal but u bastards who put a buck in and then complain are POS

I'm a fan of soup and Panera just about delivers the goods. Nice portion sizes. Was a little bit disappointed in the broccoli cheddar. The broccoli was a bit over cooked and the carrots were too thinly cut to get the full flavour but it was nice all the same. Good hearty consistency though. My fiancé had the french onion soup in a bread bowl which fared a bit better. In fact, I preferred his meal to my own. Rustic and delicious. Soul soothing food.

On Saturday 8/24/13 I had a friend visiting from out of town and we went to this "panera cares" location. We sat out on the patio, which was empty because it was around 8am. I had a small dog with me, which like the sign asked, was tied on the outside of the fence. Upon sitting down I immediately noticed a man wearing a "security" shirt and the manager standing inside staring at me with very dirty looks, whatever I ignored them. A dog walks by my dog and tries to attack her, she gets scared and hops through the gate where I'm sitting. That exact second "security" comes rushing out yelling at me that I need to read the sign and my dog cant be on the patio. I tell him I'm aware of the sign I'm calming down my dog and retying the leash. Just then two older ladies come into the patio area with newspapers, they sit down and begin to talk to each other. This time the "manager" comes out and very rudely says "if you don't buy something you cant sit here" please keep in mind he has "security" with him. If I hadn't had a giftcard for a free meal I would've left immediately and not even waited for my food. Being a social worker who works and gives back in this community it is disgusting to me that a panera, let alone a "panera cares" treats its guests like this. I have been here a few times, have always paid over my bill because I see many homeless and mentally ill people inside who I know struggle to pay their bills. I will NEVER step foot in this place again. It is ridiculous that they have a security guard here, who screams at people like its a night club. Perhaps they should spend some money educating their staff on what exactly panera cares means and what it means to create a welcome environment and generally be nice to people. I will tell everyone in my path to stay away from this place. Melissa

Wow! I think it's great that it's now a "Panera Cares". I found the staff as courteous as before the change. To the cynical yelpers I say there are plenty of eating establishments in the 'hood that are happy to take your $ & you won't be "bothered" by the less fortunate. Funny how the "lap toppers" who take up a large table for hours and spread out their books etc. for the cost of a cup of coffee aren't as bothersome. BTW, be thankful you're not walking in their shoes today but who knows about tomorrow? Thank you Panera for caring about others. I think it's a good example for a corporation to help the community it does business in. Community kitchens can't do it alone.

I hope the new change will not lead to the food quality going down. I have eaten at Panera for years. I went there for the first time yesterday since they made the change. The New England Clam Chowder, which I love, was not as robust as it once was. Maybe this was all in my mind. I ordered the BBQ chicken salad. I noticed it had less green leaves and more of the white center part of the lettuce than it did in the past. I will go there a few more times just to see what is what. If I find it no longer meets my standards, I will go elsewhere. I am all for helping to feed the hungry and homeless, but I want good quality food when I spend my money. I do not want to feel like I am eating in a soup kitchen.

As you can see from the other reviews, this is not your usual Panera. Payment is optional; you're supposed to pay as much as you can afford. In practice this means that most people there are poor and use it as a source of cheap or free food. You see people coming in and taking large amounts of food, putting in a 5 dollar bill or something like that. I always pay the full amount but as time has passed there seem to be fewer and fewer people like me and more and more of the soup kitchen types. I honestly don't care that much since I always take my food home to eat there, but if you want to go there for a while to work or whatever, the homeless types are pretty rowdy and the ambiance is pretty bad and seems to be getting worse. On the plus side, the food is as good as in any Panera, so if that's your criterion then it's no different from a regular Panera.

This is probably the highest volume Panera in the city. It is constantly slammed and the main problem with that is that they are always running out of some of their more popular dishes. I love Panera and this location has friendly employees and great space, but it's frustrating when they don't have what you want.

Panera Cares is great. The menu is the same as any Panera anywhere. There is a wide array of seating and I can write papers for hours without getting disturbed. Everyone is friendly, the music is soothing and the big windows make it a bright inviting space. Volunteers bus your tray away swiftly and politely and the managers walk around cheerfully to see how they can make your experience even better. Contrary to what some reviewers on this page seem to believe, you won't catch cooties from anyone here. And, the other customers do not smell nor are they disruptive, they are simply happy to have a place to have a great meal and relax. We need more restaurants like this

A review of a chain will likely have minimal impact but this happens to be one chain that I typically enjoy. I've gone to Panera for lunch many times and my company has even used them for catering both food and desserts and it has always been good. This review is strictly for this location which I think is abysmal. The employees are generally very friendly here but friendly or not they are probably the laziest group of people I've ever encountered. Dishes at the trash are piled ridiculously high, the trash is overflowing to the point of spilling out onto the floor, and it's a struggle to find a space for your dishes while you stand there and inhale the stench coming from trash that have been sitting there for hours. Tables aren't wiped down, the drink station is a mess with spills and needs a refill on the condiments, straws, and lids. Even more annoying than all of that is that they NEVER get my order right and I don't even ask for anything special! Yesterday I was in and ordered a simple soup and sandwich, no special requests. I went to pick up my order and they just randomly gave me a completely different soup than I ordered. Lastly, my biggest problem with this location is the free WiFi. Seriously Panera, GET RID OF THE WIFI. This isn't doing you any favors. Panera Bread is a restaurant, not a library or even a coffee shop. There are a lot of people that want to come here, sit down, and enjoy their food. But there are so many people here that have come in with their books, papers, and laptops and spread out all over the place that it's next to impossible to find a seat. Panera, this isn't doing anything for your business. These people come in and take up space for hours enjoying your free coffee refills and if you're lucky maybe they order lunch at some point. At the very least there should be a time limit imposed on the WiFi so that people that want to come here to eat aren't at the mercy of the pretentious laptop posse.

Went into panera today for the first time since it changed into a Cares Panera. The place has really let itself go. I usually love getting a sandwich and doing work at Panera I did not feel comfortable there today. It seemed dirty and worn down. I will not be back.

I think that the concept of Panera Cares is great, but I really wish it had chosen a different location. I have always loved the food and atmosphere of Panera, but with the change to a nonprofit, it seems as though Panera is starting to care less for the paying customer. If I can earn points on my Panera Rewards card here, it seems ridiculous that I cannot redeem my free pastry reward at this location because it is a nonprofit. Between the occasional police officer outside of the location and the new passcode system on the bathrooms, this location does not give a similar customer experience as its other locations.

If the homeless people are working in the kitchen to "pay" for their meal, and they are serving YOU - the paying customer - do the staff/manager make sure that the homeless person has washed their hands? I cringe when I think about the fact that they might not have taken a bath and have urine on their clothes, and have spent the night trawling thru the garbage can, getting God knows what on their body, and then they are going to come to Panera and serve food to me? It turns my stomach to think of that. What is Panera management doing to make sure they are clean? Some of the homeless are also mentally not right and they might pick their nose and then touch the food you are going to buy.

  • Bethany H.

Oh man, despite how OVERLY kind (to the point of laying it on too thick) the staff is here, I will never go back to this Panera! Sorry to be blunt, but you cannot eat or have coffee in peace here due to the fact that now that they give away food there are homeless (or very near to it) people sitting around. I had not even sat down one minute, had not even put my bag down, when I was chatted up with pointless nonsense by a man sitting across from me, who then began another loud conversation with a second free-fooder about haircuts. The woman at the table behind me smelled to high heaven. Giving food to those who can't afford it is a great concept, but I won't be back to patronize this restaurant - I paid, and I need to do work in a reasonable environment. Now, if they said we'll switch this and start donating to a soup kitchen, that's something I would allow them to "round up" my bill for. Wish I'd read up on this place before I bought the coffee and realized my mistake.

IF you can find a seat at this particular location (that's a big if), it's likely you'll be seated between a yuppie checking stocks on his MacBook and a furious-looking homeless man scribbling circles on a newspaper with a crayon (as I recently was). The yuppies and homeless of Panera generally don't bother me if I don't bother them. What else can I say? It's Panera, everyone knows to come for their iced tea and "you pick 2" deal, but stay for the people watching.

Panera is insane for thinking this was a good idea. I'm not sure there is another place in Chicago with more crazy people (and I used to live in uptown). There were always crazies hanging around here but now it's just insane. You can't be there without someone at some point coming over to have a crazy conversation with you. My first time there as a Panera Cares I was with my husband and baby and an elderly man (80ish) came over and was chatting with us. I didn't understand most of what he was saying but then he asked if we knew where he could buy a rubber ducky for his pregnant wife.

The food is great and the service is quick and courteous. Now for the problems: If you go at the wrong times (most of the time) finding a table is nearly impossible - so take the food to go. Also, and worse yet, there are too many homeless people hanging out. What makes it problematic is when a couple of them will start arguing and yelling at each other in the dining area. While I think the threatening language and profanity is entertaining - say if it's on screen - it's not particularly amusing when I'm trying to enjoy my lunch on a calm Sunday afternoon with my 5 year old son. I brought it to the attention of the employees and management and all they did was apologize. Refused to talk to them or address the situation. Poorly handled. Took my food to go and left.

Not really sure what "Panera Cares" is, but I'm guessing it means 'if you can't pay for it, don't worry about it because we overcharge for food.' But i went in one day because I am a big fan of Panera, it was very crowded and it definitively looked like there were a lot of homeless people there getting food because instead of having a price for the food they have a suggested donation. But even though it was very crowded and there were a lot of people getting their share of the free food, the staff was very nice and my food was ready in a very timely manner. I ordered a turkey bravo and a bowl of broccoli cheddar soup (as usual) and the soup and sandwich was up to par if not better than most of the Panera's that I have been to. But i was a little dissappointed with the bread that I got with my soup, it was very hard and seemed a little old. Which is a disappointment because they are supposed to be known for their bread. Overall I would still recommend this location to friends.

Food and service is fine. I just can't handle the crazies that take up space in there during the winter. As Fall approaches I get ready for the pan handling outside of their store as well as the people talking to themselves taking up all of the seats inside. Great food for "to go". And they keep the place clean, they just need to think about their customers who are buying a little more than 1 small cup of coffee so they have a place to sit.

I must say, I am quite disappointed with this Panera Bread location -- quite possibly the worst I've ever frequented. I've been here three times now, and have consistently received poor service. The workers at the cash register have consistently given me attitude when ordering and are, essentially, incompetent when it comes to counting change -- just a few minutes ago it took the cashier a long time to give the woman in front of me change, and it held up the line. Additionally, they let a woman cut in front of me in line, and when I mentioned something to a worker behind the counter, he simply gave me a fake smile and didn't respond, point blank ignoring me. The last time I came in I made a purchase of $22 and was not offered a Panera rewards card. I'm sorry, but what the heck? My friend bought today's purchase (as last time I covered his), and he was not only offered the rewards card but received credit for the purchase, and I clearly did not from just a week ago. This type of inconsistency in treatment is ridiculous and uncalled for. Next, on my order last week, the buzzer didn't go off. Come to find out, my order was sitting on the counter idly for several minutes, and of course I didn't even know, since my buzzer didn't go off. Please do not give me a buzzer that doesn't work. Also, on my last week's order, it took them 10 minutes to make my coffee drink, and they weren't even that busy. These circumstances really turn me off from returning to this Panera Bread (and quite possibly others!). I will be calling the manager at my earliest convenience and hope he does something. I will report back what he does (or does NOT) do.

Where to start? The bread, bagels, and pastries ARE quite good. The baguette was the best part of the meal. Depending on whether you see the glass as half-full or half-empty, I don't care for their cookies anymore. They're oatmeal raisin cookie has nuts in it (strike one, in my book) and not nearly enough raisins (strike 2). They do have chocolate chip cookies without nuts, but, again, not enough chocolate chips. As for the rest of the menu, some menu items are better than others; still, the food is rather pricey and quite boring. The most remarkable characteristic of the chicken tortilla soup I ordered this afternoon was that it was brown. Chicken tortilla soup isn't supposed to be brown. I know this for a fact. I lived in Texas for a number of years and had tortilla soup the way it is supposed to be made. Apparently, chain restaurants think that you can simply throw tortilla strips on a soup and -- Voila! -- they are actually serving you proper tortilla soup. Wrong. Furthermore, this location of Panera Bread does not have automatic doors for people confined to wheelchairs. When I arrived there today, a woman was patiently sitting in her wheelchair in front of the door until she could ask someone to open the doors for her. So, I really question how "wheelchair accessible" this location is. I doubt I'll be returning to Panera anytime soon.

Panera is one of my favorite go-to places. I always appreciate when my mom sends me giftcards to here as well! I love that they have wireless and I can come hang out here for an afternoon working on my computer/reading a book/eating good cafe food. They have the best broccoli cheddar soup! I haven't found another restaurant that makes it quite as good as Panera. I've tried many of their salads and sandwiches. I love all the fresh ingredients. I also think they have some of the best "homemade lemonade!"

I've always been a fan of Panera. This location does justice for it's ever-so-busy location. It's on the corner of Clark and Broadway and Diversey = Craziness! The three times I have been in there, I have never waited in line. There are a bunch of people begging for money on the walk in and the walk out. If you ignore that, then you are golden. My soup was hot. My sandwich was amazing. The manager on duty was great. I ordered the "you pick 2" and paid for it. And then, last minute, I had a change of heart and wanted a different sandwich. The manager gave me the difference in price, without any hassle, to deal with my indecisiveness! Great guy! My only complaint is the coffee lids. They are weak, flimsy and could possibly result in burning your little fingers, as they did mine. Oh, and I spilled my coffee three times. I have mentioned it to upper management. Here was their answer: They are attempting to start going "green". Apparently going green equals supplying cheap coffee lids. Oh well, they are sending me a gift card to compensate their going green attempt. But, wasting an envelope doing so. Hmmmm.... Overall, it's a great place for grabbing a quick bite to eat. Just dodge the panhandlers and hold on tight to that coffee!

Don't get me wrong, I love Panera but this one is a mess. No parking, really crowded, slow service. Great location but you really pay for it. Most everyone there is writing a "screenplay" and just there to get the free wifi. Most of them aren't even eating. Meh. If you're craving Panera and have to have it, head to the location on Clybourn. Much, Much better.

I don't hate on all Panera's. Just this one. I'm usually a fan of the chain, but I thought people should know how bad this particular location is, and avoid it if at all possible. Perhaps regional management should pop by and witness the horrible things going on here. This was my closest Panera for a few years, and I went there a lot. I worked really close so I had limited options on my lunch break. I would usually walk in there craving a fresh sandwich or salad, and walk out trying to keep down my vomit. Some reasons I dislike it so are: They are slow. I know the lunch rush makes stuff take longer, but this is insane. Twenty minutes to slop tuna on bread?! They seem to have 100 employees, yet no one is busing the tables. Sick. They've served me tomatoes over and over on stuff, even though I always STRESS to them that I'm allergic. Meh, oh well, just food allergies right? Just annoying. TWICE they served me RAW chicken. I open my sandwich to take the tomatoes off, of course, and the chicken looks weird. So I cut it and see that its pink. Gooey pink. Tastayyyy... Now they've opened a Potbelly's across the street- go there instead.

I never thought of Panera as review-worthy (it's a massive chain that serves soup and sanwhiches), but during dinner last night I realized that I should. The food is always tasty, served up hot, and doesn't break the bank. And the staff is geniunely nice and helpful. There was an older woman that had some mobility issues, and I saw a Panera employee go out of her way to come from behind the counter, take the lady's bags, and help her find a place to sit. She also took her order from the table and brought it to her, which was above and beyond the call of duty. You know she can't make all that much working part-time at Panera, and you know she doesn't love having to put that uniform- and name tag- on everyday, but she didn't let that get in her way of being kind to someone. And that is review-worthy.

The food is fine, and the service is just OK, but what really makes me sad about this Panera location is that they impose a 30-minute limit for wi-fi between 11:30am and 1:30pm. It's really frustrating when I get kicked off the internet in the middle of a project. Sometimes I just need to get out of the house while studying, but I'm going to have to find a different location.

I think I enjoy getting soup in a bread bowl because it always reminds me of when I was a kid in my Sunday clothes eating clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl at Fisherman's wharf followed by going to the magic shop to buy magic tricks with my allowance. =)

This outlet serves fresh breads, pastries, and other treats near the busy intersection of Clark/Broadway/Diversey. I ordered a loaf of sunflower bread and it is dynamite. You can get the loaf sliced or whole for your convenience. The bread has sunflower and sesame seeds for a delicately sweet and hearty flavor. Sourdough bread and baguettes are good too. The range of other items from scones to cinnamon rolls to muffins all look tempting.

Get's 4 Stars from me because it's my go to interview spot. Good WiFi, lots of space, good people watching. I mean, it's Panera, so the food is ok, more interesting than your typical quick service joint but nothing to write home about, especially given the other options in this area. But if what you're looking for is a comfortable spot for a coffee and a chat, or to get a few hours of net time sandwiched around your sandwich, then you could do a lot worse.

Panera's Mediterranean veggie sandwich is one of my favorite things ever-delicious bread, feta cheese, hummus-so good. Breads are their specialty and they do them well, particularly the baguettes. Their strawberry poppyseed dressing is also very delicious. Their coffee drinks are overpriced and not that good. The people watching here is great too since for some reason all the weirdos in Lakeview seem to congregate here. Oh and Panera just started a rewards program. You grab a card, register it online, and you get a free espresso drink the first time you use it. You're welcome Chicago. ;)

Eh....they seem to have really good sandwiches here but holy f&%k batman, whats with the prices?? and if you're really going to give me chips, please put more than 7 chips in the frickin' bag next time. I am glad they offer you an actual meal and a place to relax and chill..doesnt seem like a fast food place even though it really is. those prices however....you're better than that.

Be NICE now, and say hello to the fellas behind the counter making your yummy fuji-apple chicken salad. Yes, I know it may in fact be totally out of fashion to be cheery and gracious- but they know what's good and will let you know! Tell 'em I sent you! Also, you might like the carb-overload of broccoli cheddar soup in the bread bowl. That's a classic from back when Panera was the illustrious St. Louis Bread Company. Yeah. Delicious!

I'm pretty sure this was my first Panera of many Panera locations. I can't really complain - they have always been good to me. I typically alternate between ("you pick two") chicken cesar sandwich, or the frontega chicken... with brocolli cheddar soup. I don't know what it is about that soup, but it's addicting.

I don't think any Panera deserves a 2 star rating so I am compelled to at least bring up its rating a bit by writing a review! I have spent sooo much money at Panera, mostly because the food is decent and consistent (the chain thing I know) and there is FREE WIFI and free refills on coffee alllll day long. When I was in grad school and studying all the time, I could always count on any Panera in Chicago or the burbs or back at home in Virginia to be open early, have free internet and decent coffee. This particular location gets really crowded around lunch time and the weekends, but still has been a consistently great spot for me to study or grab a cheap cup of coffee. The huge cookies and the other baked goods are really good! I love the bread bowls and soups. The iced green tea is really good as well. My favorite sandwich is the veggie sandwich - mmmm. The Pick Two (sandwich with salad or soup, or soup and salad) is the perfect size meal. I won't pretend like this is some great unique experience (again it's a huge chain), but I think it has good quality food and coffee and was one of the first large coffee shops to offer unlimited FREE wifi!! (Starbucks are you listening??) Also, I have never had a bad experience with the staff at this location. Only complaint would be the group of old and bizarre Panera regulars at this location.

I went to see a movie at the Century on Friday night, and every other place was packed (20 minute wait at The Counter), so we ducked in here for a bite before the show. By the time I left, I had forgotten the entire experience. Except the little buzzing coaster -- that bugger was loud. Probably better for you than most fast food, but who cares?

A refuge for cafe study people. Coffee (not awesome, but ok), tea, breakfast, lunch, and dessert, bathroom, outlets, natural light, free wifi, nice big tables, and not too noisy: perfect for studying. I've never been a big fan of Panera food (I think it's fine, but not amazing), but the prospect of eating real food (incl. salads) instead of endless cafe pastries is a big plus when you're studying.

The good - Free wireless for hours on end. Fountain Mountain Dew for those of us country folk who like looking like rednecks from Florida Great outdoor area for people watching The bad Gross lunchmeat in big bready sandwiches. Overly salty soup that likely comes out of a bag and then mixed with water. Fake pastries. Insufficient electrical outlets for laptops Panera will do in a pinch, if I am desperate and in a hurry. Otherwise, I just stay away. I had a really gross panini here a few weeks ago. The turkey seemed slimy, the bread plain and the sauce? was runny. No more Panera for me for a long, long time.

I go here a lot, because it is between my apartment and where I work. Everytime, I get a plain bagel with plain cream cheese and a small soda. The people are friendly and recognize me when I come in, and most remember that I only wanted my bagel sliced and not toasted. The atmosphere is comfortable and I can sit there for a few hours before I go to work and write or read or draw. Sometimes the girls make me nervous though.

If you're going to Panera, you know you're going to Panera. Like most chains, you know what it has and what you're going to get once you're there. It's usually not some grand adventure. So the food is fine. Maybe a little on the expensive side for what you get, but I've never been disappointed with what I've gotten. By the same token, my socks have never been particularly rocked. Maybe an "Mmm, that's good" on occasion. Possibly a "Yum!" here and there... I'm especially a fan of the vegetarian black bean soup in the bread bowl. Safe bet there. Now what's a gamble is the service. Last time I was there, I ordered a bagel. Sliced. Toasted. Easy right? I should be on my way in a few seconds, right? Wrong. They had one cashier working (on a Sunday midday), and the line was backing up to the door. If it had been like that when we walked in, we would have walked back out. Not that he was the only one behind the counter. There were a couple others around, doing... I dunno... stuff? One of these "others" was a manager, seeming oblivious to the half of my bagel that was sitting there getting cold and its lonely other half languishing away, still trying to get over the hump into the toaster. It went like that for about five minutes until I got the guys attention (on his second or third trip past me). He got it for me right away, but still... I guess that's the risk you run with any big chain establishment. Other than that, seating can be tough on weekends with laptop campers taking up tables. And with it being a Lincoln Park place, you can expect Lincoln Park "parenting," too... (i.e. screaming children and/or kids running wild).

Panera is hilarious because there was this lady (with a smooshed face) today and she cut in front of everyone in line and started screaming "does anyone have change for a 10?!!? It is a DIRE EMERGENCY!!!" and then of course the stoned cashiers replied that they didn't have change. But then the manager stepped in and gave her change and then he handed this one cashier a shit ton of buzzers that go off EXPOSIVELY when your food is ready. In other news, I recommend the you-pick-two with french onion soup, tuscan chicken sandwich, and chips.

Wha' Happened? I used to stop in for lunch once every month or two for a sandwich and a Reader/New City break. Their Italian sandwich was great, and it's what I ordered most times. Then I moved. Fast forward 2-3 years. I'm living about 1/2 mile away, with far too much good stuff between Panera and my place to make it worth the walk. However, it's on the way to a bunch of things and I happened to stop in for Old Faithful: The Italian. Fast forward 5 minutes. Shock, no awe. The bread was completely different. They used to serve it on the type of bread every restaurant since the beginning of time has served Italian sandwiches on. Now it was the bastard child of Wonderbread and a dinner roll. Also, no jalapeno peppers. It had been corporate-ized. A focus group surely had decided that "Americans don't like good, ethnic bread or peppers on sandwiches." Come on! (2nd pop culture reference for those keeping score.) Devastated, I finished and left. Assuming that a mistake had obviously been made I tried again some time later. Same results. Adios, Panera bread. Don't call me....I'll call you.

I usually love going to Panera Bread...that is the one in Willowbrook. The Panera Bread in Lincoln Park has got to be one of the slowest serving places I have ever been to. I emailed the district manager a couple of times regarding the time issues and all I got was an email saying that they would look into it. Guess what, nothing has changed. The service is slow as ever and the workers have a bad attitude. I suggest walking the extra 20 feet down to Potbelly.

I walked into Panera ready to place my standard order, the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich and Baked Potato Soup. Unfortunately when I ordered, the manager told me Panera doesn't make the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich anymore. I was really disappointed, because it's one of the few items I actually order. The manager was very nice and made some recommendations which I ignored because I already had my heart set on the Tuscan Chicken Sandwich. I did notice the tomato and mozzarella salad was back on the menu so I ordered it instead. It was good, but I wanted my sandwich. The manager did tell me I could take the online survey and suggest that Panera bring back my sandwich. Believe me, I let Panera have it! Don't mess with me when I'm hungry Panera! I

Let's face it - there are not enough Panera locations in Chicago. Or at least not ones close enough to my work or apartment. I pretty much always get the Tuscan Chicken sandwich (ol' reliable) with chips, but occasionally will branch out into one of their seasonal sandwiches. Their breads are fabulous, and I've yet to have a dessert item there I didn't like (though I usually end up getting the apple or raspberry open pastry things. My sister loves the "muffies" - muffin tops.)

fall is in the air, which means soup for lunch, and this panera is right around the corner from my work. unfortunately, 95% of the time, 95% of their soups are so overly salty that i have to dilute them with water or my green tea. once in awhile they're o.k., which tricks me into trying them again. i don't understand the variable here, because i know they pour the stuff out of a prepackaged plastic baggie. i will recommend their turkey chili, clam chowder, and once in a while their garden vegetable is edible pre-dilution. but their chicken noodle is consistently over salted, as are any number of their other choices, esp. after they've been cooling for awhile. try their turkey artichoke panini or orchard harvest salad instead. but if only a hot cuppa soup will do, walk a few blocks north on broadway to soupbox; it's worth the extra $ and distance.

In general, I love Panera Bread. it's a good place for me to study. The bagels are yummy (Cinnamon Crunch is my fave) & I really like the 1/2 soup, 1/2 salad combo. Plus, free wi-fi is always a bonus. But, this particular Panera is always super crowded. I always feel like I'm in someone else's face & every time I go there's a weird guy trying to make random conversations with patrons.

What happened to my beloved Panera? I went there tonight in order to avoid fixing dinner for my poor sickly self, and apparently I've been absent for way too long. Instead of giving you an order number like they used to, they now have those handy buzzers that alert you when your food is ready. Normally, this would be a welcome change, if it didn't sound like multiple car alarms were going off in the restaurant. It did wonders for my headache and it seemed to have a pleasant calming effect on all the students cramming throughout the booths. The food has always been pleasantly satisfying (my faves: Tuscan Chicken and the always dependable Chicken Caesar Salad), and I used to go on at least once every two weeks for lunch, but I stopped heading here so often for two reasons: 1. It's overpriced 2. It's not as 'healthy' as it seems (check out the nutritional facts on their website) That being said, it's always a good stop every once in a while.

  • Kathryn M.

So here's the situation...I totally adore Panera...but I 100% loathe it when you order a certain sandwich that is supposed to have a certain kind of bread and when your little buzzer goes off and you pick up your sandwich it has plain sourdough bread. Now I love sourdough, but if what I ordered is supposed to have some specialty bread, then I want that bread, or at least when I order tell me that you're out. Don't substitute it without telling me first. Of course, I will never say this to their faces because I dodge confrontation at all costs. It's a pretty large space, with a nice outdoor area, and free wifi. Food is consistently yummy, but you know...I have my pet peeve outlined above.

This is my second time at a Panera Bread and i was looking forward to a nice warm bowl of soup and a tasty half sandwich... Now besides it being oddly over packed with old(er) people.. my bf and i had to literally fight to find a table just to sit down.... which we did.. we sat for 30 min.. after watching everyone else get their food before us my bf went to see what had happen to our food.. which was apparently sitting up there for 20 min. the beeper thingy that they gave us after placing our order was apparently running low and it NEVER went off. after asking them to warm up our food we finally received our food. what i got was a water down version of what they call "clam chowder". My sandwich on the other hang was picture-esk and very tasty. but then again i wasn't risking anything by getting that sandwich because its the same one i ordered at my previous visit to a different panera bread. Now according to my bf his chicken soup was "OK" but his chipotle sandwich was disgusting and gross- looking. the cheese looked like a hard yellow piece of plastic. i will never eat at this panera again.

i came here for the wifi when rcn failed at home. well the wifi is free here because it doesn't work. not always at least. and not on certain computers. and even if you got the wifi to work only half the outlets actually work. for every two outlets you see in the wall only one of them will work so forget about sharing outlets with anyone. if you come here in the evening you can expect to wait a while in the line as well. the place isn't the cleanest either. with no wifi, or working outlets, and a long wait...these factors just make this panera no different from any other normal run of the mill bad chain restaurant. if i wanted to get something to eat i'd just go somewhere else. but i go here to eat AND study or use the wifi. without the latter there's no point in the former for me.

I've been to a couple of different Panera locations, two in the suburbs, one in Bloomington and this one on Diversy. I always get the same thing - Frontega Chicken sammich and a cup of soup, usually broccoli cheddar or the cream of chicken and wild rice. I've tried other sammiches but the Frontega Chicken is my fav by far. They also make a really great cup of chai. I like Panera when I'm in the mood for warm, comfort food with no surprises. I'm all about trying new places but sometimes I just want to know I'm going to enjoy what I'm ordering, y'know? The Panera on Diversy is big compared to the other locations I've been to. I think their food is a little over priced since it is technically fast food but the soup is worth it.

i do miss the portabello sammich that was sooo good...but i like the chipotle chicken one so it's a good swap. not to mention the hazlenut coffee with free refills and cinn crunch bagels....and free wifi...i should just move into panera..it's a solid lunch place for sure and i've studied at this one before and didn't get the side-eye to get out so that's always a plus..
