Rounding up to five stars from four and a half because I would like to support this business. The best time to come to this place is a weekend morning to order the Northern Chinese style breakfast, listed under "Appetizers." Folks, don't come here for orange chicken, Mongolian beef, or that ilk -- this is one of the few authentic Northern Chinese cuisine establishments in the U.S (along with Ed's Potsticker House and Homestyle Taste), so before you come here, ask any friend from Beijing and verse yourself a bit in "Dongbei" food. The you tiao here is awesome. The cong you bing is also spectacular.

I really wanted to like this place, I waited awhile after they opened to iron any issues out as most new joints inevitably have, and it just wasn't good. I ordered Crab Rangoon which was bland and soggy, no crunch at all. In fairness this may have been a result of me getting a text saying food was ready at 846 but it didn't arrive til 935 but a little flavor still would have been nice. I also got the Mongolian beef . The sauce was very tasty and delicious, but my meat was chewy and fatty, so much so that I spit some out. Yuck. I wish them the best, but they need to make some improvements.

I'm giving this 5 stars because I ordered the Mongolian Beef the first time I went and since then have been back more times than I can count for the same dish! It is SO GOOD and the beef is tender and the sauce spicy yet delicious. One of my new favorite bridgeport takeout spots. We did dine in and had a pleasant experience as well. I'd love to order other dishes but I love the Mongolian beef so much I doubt I will...the egg rolls are particularly yummy as well. I'd like to add they make their own hot sauce (which doesn't need to be added to the Mongolian Beef for spiciness) which is also outstanding.

Food came in large portion, but we were also a large group. We had the hot and sour soup, which I thought was ok. It wasn't great. The service was ok. It is a small restaurant. We didn't have enough bowls and the servers were busy. Food portion is large. I liked the egg plant and mapo tofu. We have two other soup dishes too. They were decent. I didn't feel like anything was specifically too salty or lacked salt. I am also very use to Southern Chinese food, so this might be something new I am not quite use to yet.

Have a wide selection of food - from Northern to Cantonese to American Chinese. A little pricy for that oily and bland pork belly with dried string beans - $15! It looked like pig food in reality - my new phone did a good job with that photo. I have to admit that I have been making a lot of wrong choices when ordering food:( I wanted to try some of the desert, but it is priced $10! The service was pretty good. The girls work there are very friendly and nice. The decor feels very cold, not welcoming. They need to fix that entrance door. We sat next to it and whenever people open it, it sounded like they were breaking it. The 15% grand opening discount was nice. Oh, our stomachs were kind upset after dinner...

I was excited to see that another restaurant open in Bridgeport. We ordered a hot and sour soup, spicy lamb with cumin (bone in), kimchi fried rice, shredded pork stir fry and another spicy appetizer. Pro: Lamb Dish Service was decent if you spoke Mandarin Con: Limited English Food was bland. The hot and sour soup was just sour. We asked them about it and they adjusted the soup by added "hot oil" which made is greasy sour soup. Spicy oil that they gave us had no heat Fried rice was mushy and again not spicy *sigh* maybe I'm asking too much. Next time I'll bring my own hot sauce.

i wish i could give a negative score. Being a native northern Chinese myself and having spent more than 10 years in the states I know my Chinese food well. I have enjoyed going to Ed's potsticker house as well as the other new Dongbei restaurant down the street from Ed's on halsted. They are both legit and well worth visiting. However, going to northern city today left me disgusted and feeling sick. We ordered one of the famous casserole dishes as well as a fish dish. the meat in the dish taste so bad I had to spit it out right away it's has a nasty smell as well. we asked the chef and he claimed that it was an extra ingredient.. he was not very understanding and a bit rude. (grand it Chinese restaurants are not known for customer service but I have definitely seen better). we left the giant pot of the pork casserole there. Then the fish came, although they claim it's live catch from the tank, it tasted so fishy and had a strong dirt taste which generally means it's not fresh. On top of all this, we were sitting right next to the tank, no one has come by and got the fish since we got in the restaurant! urgh I was so upset and disgusted at that point I decided to just pay and leave. All the waiting staff realizes that I am upset but no one said anything.. all in all a terrible experience, ruined my day for sure! I was so excited to try it but left sick to my stomach!

I go to Potsticker House often cause I live so close but Word on the street is Northern City is the new Potsticker House cause the cooks left, I decided to give it a try and it tasted great! I got an order of Crab Rangoon and the first few I ate we're very tasty, until I took a bite of one and there was A LONG WHITE HAIR in my mouth. I instantly puked and it ruined my whole meal. I couldn't even eat the rest of the food. It was a take out order so I didn't think they would do anything about it. Buts its gross to think that it got made with the hair inside of it!! Yuck! The prices are way to extreme, theres nothing special on the menu. It's going to be hard to go back to Northern City.

First time here. We were Really hungry! Stopped on a Sunday afternoon around 3:30. All Asians eating here, at the time. Took that as a good sign. Most reviews were good. Service was good. Pot stickers were excellent, soup was good. The entrees were WAY TOO SALTY! OMG! Be careful. Was it because were ordered everything spicy? We couldn't finish our shared spicy cabbage and shared Dry Pot Chicken due to the high salt. When we complained about the crazy overboard salt and said we didn't want to take the food home, since there was most of it still in the serving bowls...they took 15% off the bill but didn't offer to change the meal. We should have gone to Chinatown in the first place.

I just... I can't. Every time I order from Northern City, I'm reminded that I promised myself I wouldn't do it again. Every order, without fail, has something weird about it. My latest & least favorite was crafted with a sodium content that was just off the charts. I picked up a mapo tofu lunch special a few weeks ago that was like a tofu salt lick. I'm not exaggerating, I'm not trying to be a mean ol' Yelper here, but really it was disgusting. My teeth actually ached like I had wrapped my lips around a salt shaker. It was the strangest thing. I threw away an entire box of food. Yesterday I was out running errands & all I wanted was some crab rangoon. Major craving, so I figured I'd just swing on by Northern City on my way home. Can't mess up some cream cheese & pastry deep fried, right? Wrong. The pastry dough was so obviously stale, I had to rip & tear with my teeth just to get a very chewy bite. Second successful bite revealed a whole mess of spoiled cream cheese. Into the trash this wasted $$ went, just like that lunch special a few weeks earlier... I used to really enjoy getting noodle dishes from Northern City. From what I understand, their noodles are actually homemade. They were always thick & plentiful, if only a bit on the greasy side, but they were tasty. I'm not sure I can risk trying their noodles again! I'm so sorry, Northern City! You're just not the most reliable Chinese joint in the Bridgeport neighborhood! :(

Came here with my mom for dinner, since I heard a lot about the Lamb and Northern Chinese cuisine. Overall, the cumin lamb was very savory and almost too spicy for me. This dish is a 4/5 for me. The rice tasted old and we picked up a few appetizers and dishes but nothing really stuck out. Then, the service felt extremely awkward as the waitress seem to be so sad about her life that I would say that she was an indentured servant. The restaurant layout was like a disco style and terrible mix and match of everything. Overall, I probably would not come back because even if the food was super tasty, the atmosphere would definitely kill it for me.

Quite authentic northern Chinese food. 煎饼果子 is huge and 小笼汤包 is very yummy and juicy. Lunch special also comes with spring rolls which is a plus!

I was under the weather, and wanted soup, boyfriend wanted noodles. my tendency of ordering the weirdest things on the menu got me to inquire this "homemade soup with flour and pork", the server said it in mandarin to me that it is her favorite soup....gosh...def. didn't go wrong with going with a "local"'s suggestion...sooo good...it's a bit on the thick and heavy (coz of the flour dumplings thing) side bf ordered the spicy beef noodle soup...that's probably one of the best noodles soup i have ever had...it's spicy, but i can still taste the food, the beef was perfectly favour and tender, the noodles's chewiness was just about right.... i swear...the hotness (spicy level) from the noodle soup and the hotness (temperature) from the flour soup def. helped sweat my fever away! i am not kidding...i literally went in with 100F and went home and it was down to 98.X F that night! Now, that is medicine!!!

Fast delivery and $1.50 for 2 solid pork buns. That's pretty awesome. Their spicy tendons is tender AND has a mild option. Who doesn't that?! Nobody else. That's who. Their "Northern Steamed Dumplings" weren't super soupy but were delicious, nonetheless. I only saw their English menu online so I couldn't verify whether they were labeled as Xiao Long Bao. Either way they were the best delivery buns I've had here in Chicago.

I wanted to try a restaurant away from Chinatown. I left this restaurant still felling hungry, because I could not eat much the food they served me. I also want to point out I usually eat Cantonese food in Chinatown, so I am NOT very familiar with northern Chinese cuisines. I pretty much ordered from the Yelp recommendations. We had the cumin lamb with bone, the meat is great, sweet and tender but way to gamey for my taste. I have had lamb and goat before, but this dish is really gamey. crispy pork, not good. pork was chewy, sauce was neither spicy nor sweet enough. I thought it would be closer bejing ribs (king do quach/ornage beef/pork) (which is a deep fried crispy pork with the sweet plum sauce). This dish tastes very uninteresting. smoked pork pancake - tastes very dry and bland. I took 1 bite, tried another bite on a different piece.... could not get myself to try a 3rd bite. The portions are big. The service was ok.

This place is horrible. Delivery charge is outrageous. Almost $5.00. I had to explain my order and address like 5 times. Delivery took waaaaaaaay to long. Over an hour. Food gets here and there's no condiments, silverware or napkins. Crab Rangoon tastes life it's microwaved. They didn't give us our white rice and the fried rice is super salty. Everything was over priced and the food is crap. Everything about this experience is crap.

Ordered the shredded pork with garlic sauce lunch special for take out and was slightly disappointed. Half an hour before I wanted to pick up my order, I called them and asked if they used MSG. The man on the phone assured me that they did not. So I went ahead and ordered; my entree came with jasmine rice and delicious hot soymilk. They offered egg drop soup as an alternative to the soymilk, and according to their website, an eggroll. They didn't offer me an eggroll on the phone :( but honestly there was so much food I forgot about it. Pickup was prompt, and they had my order waiting within the specified half hour. The food was just ok, very Americanized. I was led to believe that they were somewhat authentic and placed my order in Mandarin in the hopes that they would up the authenticity factor. Alas, that was not the case, and the copious amounts of oil was a major turn-off. It was ridiculously sweet... they must have used at least a tablespoon of sugar. What really sealed the deal on me never returning was that they used MSG!! When they assured me they didn't!!! I was sleepy and parched for the rest of the afternoon. Northern City is a cheap pick (at least for lunch), but not healthy or up to par on taste. I'm still a little annoyed that the guy lied about their use of MSG, but I guess that's how they rope you in, at least once.

Very tasty, authentic Chinese food. I've only gotten takeout a couple of times, but every time I stop in this place is pretty busy. The have live, fresh fish in here, if you're seeking something like that. The dishes can be quite spicy, just a heads up. Wonderful service and solid food.

This is our favorite restaurant serving delicious dishes from north of China. Authentic, clean (especially their restroom), bright, and with friendly service. We ordered Crispy fried pork, Stir-fried pork kidney w. spicy sauce (not very spicy actually, highly recommend! so authentic), Shredded pork w. garlic sauce, and Candied sweet potato. I love the potato dish, it's good for people who carving dessert after dinner. Although I pressed five stars here, I sill want to mention that the paper table cover was stained with grease... Anyway, still is a good place to having Chinese food!

Nice Chinese restaurants! Genuine dishes from northeastern part of China! If you wanna try some genuine Chinese food from northeastern China, just ask them! Lunch special is good! Most services are so friendly. Skewers need to be improved.

Restaurant review Unfortunately I did not write this review sooner so I will have to say that I can't remember all of the dishes we had at the restaurants, however the dumplings were so so. Maybe I cannot appreciate the finer points of dumplings, but I found them fatty. The noodle dishes also were quite oily along with the northern pancakes which also were nice but on the oily side. Afterward the meal I felt thirsty which may mean some MSG.... Well maybe next time I'll try some other dishes Pro: Northern type asian cuisine Cons: oily and some of the dishes possibly had MSG Hidden gem: none that I know of

I had the hot and spicy tofu lunch special. It was awful. The restaurant smelled so nice and the woman who took my order was so pleasant so I REALLY wanted to like this place. The tofu was breaded but it wasn't cooked properly or something because it was slimy... I have never seen breading turn to slime in my life. Also it was soaking in like half a cup of grease. It came with soup, egg drop soup.... that was disgusting... I put a spoonful in my mouth and gagged. I don't know if this is worse or not, probably for me because it's the reason I ordered it.... I LOVE hot food and this dish is just onion, tofu, and pepper so it should've been hot.... it wasn't.... at all.... like not at all. So sad. Thankfully it was super cheap for lunch. If I would've paid full price for that slop... I would not have been a happy Brittany at all.

First time here. :) I wasn't holding much hopes when I came. This is like the second new restaurant within two blocks of where I usually eat. When I came in, the waitress opened the door and everything. We were able to order tea and ice water. After 10 minutes of deciding what to eat, we ordered two lamb skewer sticks, a Northern Lamb soup, beef tummy noodles, and two chili chicken. The environment feels clean due to the plain walls (some decorations) and had two colors. It felt odd noticing the people here used to work at a business still currently in business.... The waitress warned that the two chili chicken will be spicy. Pros: service was good, BYOB Cons: food was mediocre. The soup came out bland (plain water with ingredients... I should say lamb fat and chicken fat? We sent it back to the kitchen and they just added MSG). The lamb skewer sticks were pretty good, though all lard once again. It had an even layer of spices and cumin powder. The beef noodle soup was plain weird to me. It just didn't have the soup quality that makes me crave for it. As for the two chili chicken it was a disappointment. It was a plateful of chili and around 1 cup of chicken meat (diced). For the price of $11, I felt gyped. After the whole meal, I doubt I will come back. There's nothing on the menu special enough for me to decide to come back anyway. I still prefer the other Mandarin restaurants over this one. For the price, it seems like the meal was served on a boat. I wasn't ill or anything, but I was nauseated by the rockiness of the booths. The people leaning back and forth.... moving on the seat. It's kind of awkward to feel the other person creep up from the seat and then sit back down forcefully. Don't want to get raped going back to this place (by the booth seats) and food.

Outstanding food. Great ingredients, well prepared. I had lamb with cumin--delish, hot and sour cabbage--yum, the pancake pork appetizer, which is awesome, like a really good spicy version of moo shu pork, and the amazing candied sweet potato dessert. I ordered delivery, and live 3 miles away, and the food arrived quickly and hot.

I live right by this place and since it just opened, I figured I would give it a try. I got a hold of the menu and browsed through it to see if anything special caught my eyes. My first impression from looking at the regular menu was that it is pretty expensive. I noticed the lunch special was a good deal because it was $5.00 and it comes with soup and an egg roll as well. The egg roll is horrible by the way. I decided to order the hot and spicy chicken lunch special because this is one of my favorite dish from another restaurant that I have tried in the past. It is pretty good, but definitely not as good as the one from any of the Lao's restaurant in Chinatown. For $5.00, I will definitely come here just for the lunch special. I wish it came with fried rice instead of white rice though.

Had the ma Po tofu, Mongolian beef and crispy pork. Great portion sizes. All the dishes were very flavorful. The best was the Mongolian beef. It's a great Chinese restaurant on the outskirts of Chinatown.

Better than I thought it would be. When we arrived on a Friday evening, there were a number of tables occupied, so that was pleasing. We had the Northern Style steamed dumplings, sauteed lamb, and Northern Style braised eggplant. The dumplings weren't that good, as the dough was too thick and the filling was simply just pork and leek. The sauteed lamb was pretty good and was quite a generous serving. The eggplant had a nice crispy texture to it. However, the accompanied vegetables like green peppers and onions were nearly raw and hard to digest. All of the dishes came freakishly fast. We also had the tofu dessert with sweet syrup (don't know the exact name), but the tofu should have been thinner and slippier like at other places (Gourmet in Chinatown). What was the most disappointing was the accompanied pot of tea. It honestly tasted just like hot water just with a light brown coloring. When I opened the pot, there were no tea leaves in there so they must have brewed it elsewhere, which explains the lack of flavor. Service was okay. The young waitresses were friendly, but clearly inexperienced. They had trouble and took a long time to clear off our table. They also didn't really check up on us and we had to signal them, especially when clearly we were done eating. The place itself is decent and looks pretty clean. Prices are a tad expensive, but understandable, especially as some of the dishes are pretty generous. Overall, not bad. Probably will return sometime especially as it is in my neighborhood, but definitely not a go-to.

I really enjoy Northern Style Chinese food. It's hard to find this kind of food in Chicago. I'm glad to have been referred to Northern City. This place is fantastic. The food has a good kick of spice and wonderfully rich flavor. I've not had anything I don't like here. If you aren't spice friendly, you'll probably want to order what you know. If you're an adventurous eater, you just let your eyes do the wandering and I'm sure you'll find something delicious (everything I've had here is). As the other reviewers have stated, I'd love to see this local neighborhood restaurant thrive.

The food here is decent, however, the service is poor. When I made the reservation for this restaurant, the lady who took the reservation didn't sound like she wanted to take the reservation. You can tell there is a bad vibe from the other end as shes taking down your name, party size, time, etc. When we got there, we were shortly seated at our table. They gave us one menu for our party of 11 people..hm, that's going to be tough to order, so we asked for more menus. We ordered about 11 dishes or so. My favorite was the fish fillet with green beans, the northern style stir fry noodles, and the ox tail. Most of the food here are spicy and a bit greasy but I feel it is not as greasy compared to the other Northern China restaurants so that is a plus. Most of the food were decent. The complaint I have is the service. I felt they treated us as kids, when most of us are near 30 yrs old. We were done eating for awhile, and they didn't come over to clean our table up, so we ended up doing it for them because we had cupcakes to open. It was one of my best friend's birthday so we wanted to celebrate with cake. Our friends helped cleaned the table and cleared parts of the table away so we can take out the cakes. Good thing I brought cupcakes because they didnt serve us forks or plates for the cupcakes. Seriously, no service at all. When we were all done, we had to ask for boxes to pack the leftovers. Yay! They helped us boxed our foods. Overall, service is bad. You might as well serve yourself.

Ordered delivery since I just moved in tonight and all my stuff is in storage. The two stars are for the tasty dumplings and stir fry, but the service is terrible. All the dumpling sauces were forgotten, as was the spoon (I ordered soup). I had an interesting time figuring out how to eat my food.

Northern City Pork for the most mind blowing fabulous lamb with coriander in world history. Ribs with Sour Cabbage soup is also merely fantastic. The chef came from Potsticker House where he was extraordinary but now that he has his own place Jack is really making it happen. Portion are generous, staff are courteous and efficient. I love this place.

Whether dine in or take out, the food here Northern City has always been consistent and delightfully delicious. Couple of my favorite is their Dom Dom Mein and Siu Loon Bao. The Dom Dom Mein has a sweet and tangy flavor mixed with their home made noodles tasted much like the traditional Northern China's dishes. The servers are well mannered and friendly, which is refreshing relative to other Chinese restaurants in the area.

You must go to the South Side to eat Northern Chinese Cuisine. It is great winter food. Large portions, liberal amounts (for Chinese cooking) of tasty seasoned meat, a fun vibe and friendly service. This place is for serious eaters of Chinese food - many of the customers there are from northern Chinese cities. The restaurant has more of a neighborhoody feel v. a typical Chinatown restaurant. Dumplings highly recommended.

Please support this amazing business. We held a baby shower for my sister and 30 family & friends here last weekend. Our party had 4-5 tables in the front of the restaurant and the rest of the space was open for walk-in customers. The owner and staff could not have been more accommodating. They let us bring in our own desserts and set up an entire dessert table, complete with balloons. We also played baby bingo and opened presents. I kind of felt bad for the other diners because our group was really boisterous and there were a few kids running around too. The servers were so humble that when we gave them an extra cash tip over and above the 15% gratuity included with the bill, they told us we gave them too much money! They deserved it for going above and beyond for us. Regarding the food, our family eats Chinese often and Northern City's cuisine is different from most. The dishes have a unique twist on the traditional--such as fried rice with bacon and long, burrito-like potstickers. The party had a pre-set menu of wonton soup, eggrolls, crab rangoon, sesame chicken, fish with stringbeans, fried rice, noodles, and eggplant. Everything was superb and our guests really enjoyed it too. You can tell the chef prides himself on the preparation and presentation of the food. It's not as greasy as other Chinese places and the meat and veggies are very fresh. If you want a delicious, cheap lunch, this place has lunch specials for $5.50 including soup, an eggroll, rice, and a generous portion of an entree. I recommend the peapod beef.

My husband and I frequent Ed's Potsticker House to get our Northern Chinese cuisine fix. However, the past couple of times I've left Ed's disappointed. Dishes were too salty, disgusting thick layers of oil sit at the top of the dish. Things just didn't taste the same. The first time I thought to myself, maybe it's a different chef on Sunday nights. Let's not go there anymore on Sundays. But then it kept happening on other nights. FF a few months later, a Chinese co-worker informs me that a couple of old Ed's Potsticker House cooks left to start their own restaurant around the corner! So typical Chinese. So of course we check it out. Now this is the tofu in home style sauce I remember! They nailed it! Everything was fresh and clean. No thick layer of re-used oil. All the dishes are the same as Ed's and just as good as they were before. The tofu in home style sauce is our fav. We got the beef with two types of mushrooms, very tender, super yummy. We tried the rice cake and pickled snow cabbage. Their pickled snow cabbage is out of a can. I'm used to eating my mom's home made pickled snow cabbage. Once you've had it fresh, you can't go back to the can. I'm not sure the next time we'll be back at Ed's, but Northern City, we'll see you tonight!

One of the best Chinese restaurants we've ordered from.. those Northern Style Steamed Buns are the best and the flavor is awesome in all their foods.. and the prices are great also.. they give you a lot for your money and inexpensive.. we order from them all the time.. I just wished they stayed open a little later like 11pm on the weekdays!! the funny part is we don't live that far from Chinatown either lol..

This is literally one of the best Chinese restaurants in Chicago. We ordered Orange Chicken, General Tso, pork fried rice, egg rolls, and the sweet bread for dessert. To say it's delicious is an understatement. Plus, it was delivered sooner than anticipated. We will order from here again.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
